Edward M. Carpenter has retired as chief executive officer of the Pacific Lumber Co., though he retains the title of chairman of the board. Robert B. Hoover, Palco's president, assumes the additional responsibilities of chief executive.

Carpenter's career with Pacific has a truly story book quality. After completion of his education at Santa Rosa Junior College, he went to Scotia, Ca., in 1933. He was looking for a summer job, planning to earn some money to continue his education. He liked what he saw and Pacific's managers liked what they saw. He was in a white collar job in less than a year and learned the business from areas such as stock control, statistics, storage and shipping. He became assistant to the manager in 1953, resident manager in 1957, v.p. of operations in 1961, exec. v.p. in 1963, president in 1911, and finally chairman of the board and chief executive officer in 1973. Pacific's shareholders have been electing him a director since 1963.

His proudest accomplishments are in the area of employee relations. He established one of the earliest comprehensive health insurance plans in the industry and has recently converted it to an expanded self insured health benefit plan.

The company's two scholarship plans, making available financial help to the employee's children on a noncompetitive basis, were his conception. Retirement benefits, through investment plans and pensions, have been greatly enhanced.

Hoover has been associated with Pacific all his adult life, with two periods of direct employment and an intervening period with A. L. Hoover Co., Pacific's sales agent in Southern California and Arizona. He worked for Pacific in its Scotia operations 1939 1940, learning the business by brief exposure in many areas of the plant. He then went south to San Marino. Ca.. where he eventually became a partner in A. L. Hoover Co.

He was invited back into Pacific in 1963 as general sales manager. He was elected sales v.p. in 1963:exec. v.p. in l97 l: and president in 1973. His headquarters will remain in San Francisco, even though he plans to spend a fair amount of time in the general offices at Scotia, where Warren Flinchpaugh is in charge of day-by-day operations.

Among his many industry associations, he is presently president of the California Redwood Assn.: v.p. of the California Forest Protective Assn.: and is a director of the National Forest Products Assn.
