and Stop Wet Claims
Wagner has the key elements to increase grade recovery. Introducing the new System 750 in two configurations to raise your average MC and prevent wet claims.
Pre-Planer
Wagner's new System 750M220 enables you to increase your average MC coming out of the kiln. By measuring every board coming out of the kiln, comparing it to your target average MC and dropping out too-wet boards for re-drying, an investment of a little inconvenience and additional labor retums BIG dollars in higher grade recovery. Info-Pak PlusrM for Windows NTrM tracks the MC of every board back to the exact location, date and time it was dried and provides archiving and reporting. Ihe Solution to raising average MG.
Post-Planer
Wagner's new System 750D146 detects every wet spot exceeding your target average moisture content (MC) and marks it for your QC staff. (Available with Info-Pak Plusru for Windows 1q1ru) Thc Solution to wet claims.
The Wagner System 750M and 750D, as outlined above, include state-of-the-art hardware and software enabling you t0 increase the average moisture content of the wood coming out of your kilns and prevent wet claims. Every System 750 sold in the US includes initial onsite start up, calibration and operation ttaining.

New Year, New Records, New Markets
It hasn't been too many years since we heard that southern pine lumber would never sell in the West and that the production record from 1909 would never be broken. So much for those two predictions.
As timber harvesting on federal lands in the West sank to 20Vo of former levels, lumber buyers throughout the country began to take a fresh look at the rich pine stands of the South. Markets that had previously been almost exclusively Douglas fir and hemlock began experimenting with a load of SYP here and there. As confidence in the product grew, buyers and users realized that southern pine had outstanding qualities. lndeed, it is considered the strongest structural lumber species lbr engineered and framing applications. Impressive gains in quality opened up new markets where appearance is important. Its widespread acceptance in various western areas, for example, has put a smile on faces at a number of southern mills.
The Southern Forest Products Association tells
us (see story beginning page 36) that the previous record production of 16.27 billion bd. ft. will be nicely outpaced by an estimated new production record last year of 16.50 billion. Their forecasts show 2001, 2002 and 2004 all breaking the old record. What an amazing accomplishment. So much for America running out of wood.
Three major factors are behind this remarkable performance. Intensely managed forests have produced the wood. The genius of American manufacturing skills has stretched the supply while they raised the quality. And lastly, agressive marketing by SFPA and companies across the industry have found buyers at home and abroad for an ever-widening array of products and applications using southern pine.
Once again, the dedication of the men and women in our industry has shown that science and modern management can and will continue to set new records as they reach for and grasp the seemingly unreachable.
So much for the navsavers.

Doors
lighten up
A S HOMEOWNERS continue to Astrive for a stronger relationship between their homes and the outdoors, the use of patio and French doors in new home construction and remodeling projects is expected to increase.
"Today's home designs reflect the increased interaction homeowners want to have with the outdoors," says Bob Eckert, residential market manager for Weather Shield Windows & Doors. "Along with being able to capture more views, patio and French doors give homeowners immediate access to decks, porches, patios and other outdoor living spaces."
As a result, dealers nationwide are hearing the same thing from remodeler customers: keep those French and sliding doors coming!
"Patio andFrench doors give homeowners immediate access to decks, porches, patios and other outdoor living spaces."
"We've worked on at least a dozen homes where the owners have an old patio or porch they want converted to expanded living space," says Dino Secchiari, owner of Paradise Builders & Remodeling Co. in Arizona. "Some homeowners already have windows but want to switch to doors for fast access to their backyards."
"My most popular remodeling project," he says, "is creating an 'Arizona Room.' The room is completely enclosed with French doors. They're fast and easy to install. so it's a dream project for me. And, when the ceilings are high enough, I add overhead transoms above the doors to brighten up the home. The results are impressive and my customers are always happy."
To meet the demand for expansive light options, manufacturers offer a wide variety of sliding patio doors, French sliding patio doors, and French swinging doors with side or center hinges.
Picture sliding patio doors contain a large picture window glass panel that remains stationary while smaller doors on either side slide in front of it. The effect is a wide, less obstructed view of the outdoors.
Transoms and direct-set windows also can be matched with easy-access entry doors. "By stacking transoms or direct set windows above the doors," Eckert says, "a homeowner can create almost a 'wall of glass' that allows them to gain stunning views."
Operating sidelites can increase the opening width of entry doors by more than a foot.
"Our door offerings have grown dramatically during the past decade based on consumer demand," says Eckert. "The energy efficiency
options now available for doors make it possible to economically have large spans of glass in a home."
In the years ahead, he predicts "the industry will continue to see an increase in homeowners usage of secondary doors throughout the home. We're fast approaching a time when it's not unusual for a homeowner to have entry access through a sliding or French patio door to the master bedroom, family room, study, kitchen and livine room-all in the same home."
FRENCH D00RS are among the hot products for "lightening up" homes.

E-Tailer Learns Online
Not only has being the first major home improvemellt chain with an e-commerce site helped Do it Best Corp. get a jump on online sales, it's also helped them to leam more about e-consumers.
"Based on our research and interaction with thousands of shoppeff in the six months since launching doitbest.com, we've learned that electronic customers have different needs than traditional brick and mortar shoppers," says e-commerce director Larry Pensinger. "Our experience has indicated that electronic customers want to quickly search e-commerce sites, assurance that their orders are filled, the ability to check on the shipping status of their orders, and convenient return opportunities."
As a result, the company recently enhanced its etail customer service system.
To help shoppers quickly search for products they intend to give as gift$, doitbest.com now offers a Gift Locator feature, "Electronic customers can enter the type of occasion, g€nder of the person receiving the gift, and price range. The site then retums a list of gift ideas," explains Pensinger.
Once e-customers determine what they want, doitbest.com then returns an accurate, immediate stock status for each item in the order. The site is linked to the corporation's inventory mainframe computer, enabling live inventory checks.
After an order is placed, a new tracking system allows electronic customers to identify where their items are through the warehouse pick, pack and ship process. Once orders leave the warehouse, customers can track packages through the United Parcel shipping system. By entering a UPS tracking numbr on doitbest.com, customers can get detailed information about the status of the package including the name of the person who signed for it once the order is.received. And, electronic cuslomers can return items for full refunds at the buying group's 4,400 member-retailers.

Keys To A Successful Web Site
The most effective Web-based businesses enhance customer service, build loyal communities, and integrate e-commerce, according to consulting firm RSM McGladrey, lnc.
"Customer service on the Web is evolving beyond a lot of text and a basic search engine," explained spokesman Robert Larson-Hughes. "Outstanding Web sites provide problem-solving tools to help customers find what they want immediately, They also provide value-added services to the customer, such as frequent updates, content customized to the users' requirements and real-time chat rooms for user support. Bottom-line, the outstanding sites aggressively expressed the company as an online company, actively doing business on the Web with other online organizations."
He noted that most mid-sized companies "invest primarily to meet competitive pressures, viewing the Vy'eb as a direct extension of their core competencies. In other words, they are companies that have Web sites but do not have an aggressive online sales channel."

The Myths Of The Internet
Traditional lumberyards, don't wave the white flag just yet. The Internet might not put you out ofbusiness, after all. Ttre inherent superiority of Web-based firms is a myth the media uses to explain active stock trading by overzealous investors, claims James Cramer, founder of online inve$tment site TheStreet.com.

"rJy'e became insistent that a Net business, when stacked up against a bricks-and-mortar business, must always win. It's a given. The principles of business simply don't apply. The Net transcends business!" Kramer says. "That's why we invest in everything from eToys to e-Stamps. We know that if a company has a catchy URL, its birthright is to succeed."
The reality, he notes, is far different. Other myths:
. It's cheap to do business on the Web.
In truth, running a fresh, constantly changing site can be extraordinarily expensive. Redesigning a site, reconfiguring pages, even just changing one line of type all take considerable time. Kramer considers the Web a cumbersome, expensive product that won't markedly improve for years.

o If you have a clever URL, customers will come. What really brings customers back is successful interaction, which is costly, time-consuming, and requires great customer service and attention to detail by management possessed by few new firms.

"Ifyou want traJfic you have to buy traffic and you have to interact with that traffic one-on-one, around the clock, onca it is in the cyberdoor," Kramer says. "You have to force people to notice you and go to you and when they get there they have to be pampered and made to feel that there is someone behind the URL in order to build brand loyalty."
o People enjoy shopping on the web.
"Nonsense," he argues. "People love to shop in stores. They just don't want to have to interact with salespeople, and they don't want to pay sales tax. Shoppers hate the register. They love not being sold to and not waiting in line."
He finds the Web shopping experience soulless and comparable to catalog shopping. As a result, while well run retailers have nothing to fear from the Web, those with reputations for shoddy service will die.
r Web sites cost nothing to get up and running.
Nowadays, few firms can afford to staff a new large-scale Web site business. "The market for Web professionals is so thin that you have to pay fortunes to get anybody with a brain and then top that off with a hefty dollop of stock options," Kramer complains. "And once you get them, they tend not to know as much as you thought they did."
r The Web is a reliable commercial activity.
In fact, $ites go down constantly. Few lumberyards could survive delivering their products as unreliably as even the top multibillion-dollar e-businesses do.
o Profitability is right around the corner.

Most e-businesses are ignoring profitability to gain reach. Reach in and of itself, though, without cost control will not produce profitability. '"Tell wal-Mart about reach. Tell Home Depot," says KJamer. "They will tell you that what matters is profitability, not reach. They are in the same world that I am in. There is no cyberworld where reach trumps profits."

It's Not So Lonely At The Top.
\Mhile our competition spent 1999 putting out fires, SPRUCE was planting seeds.
Most Computer System suppliers spent 1999 modifyrng their current products for Y2K compliance with an anxious eye on the Millennium countdoum. All SPRUCE customers are already Y2K compliant, so thet support dollars are being spent developing new products. Products that will give them incredibly rapid access to the information they need in order to suearnline their business in the next century, a must after a decade of market consolidations.
We learned from our competitors' mistakes when developing the supremely adaptable SPRUCE Relational Information Suite of Management Tools (RIS). Railroad Giants To Merge
Burlington Northern Santa Fe Corp. and Canadian National Railway Co. have agreed to combine their rail systems.
The $6 billion merger will create North America's largest line, hauling cargo such as forest products and petrochemicals fiom Halifax, Nova Scotia, to Los Angeles, Ca., and from Vancouver, 8.C., to the Gulf of Mexico.
Though officials said the deal would create more direct service by eliminating handoffs, skepticism among rail customers abounds due to recent acquisitions that led to delays and freight tie-up.
While the deal is being billed as a no-premium merger of equals, the majority of the new company's board members will be Canadian, as will its top executives.
Likewise, the firm's headquarters rnust remain in Montreal, according to Canadian privatization laws.
Activist Gets Pastry Pasting
The Biotic Baking Brigade has struck again. In a scene right out of a Three Stooges comedy, a brigade member disrupted a meeting on logging restrictions befbre the Santa Cruz, Ca., County Board of Supervisors by throwing a pie at former Greenpeace activist, Dr. Patrick Moore.
Moore was speaking on behalf of Big Creek Lumber Co., Davenport, Ca., when a brigade member called him a traitor, and pelted him with a pie.
After a brief scuffle, the pie-throw-

er, who identified himself as "Sequoia Berry," got away before deputies could arrest him.
The county supervisors were discussing a plan to place more severe restrictions on logging in Santa Cruz County.
Protester Leaves Tree
After two-plus years atop an 18story-high perch, tree sitter Julia "Butterfly" Hill reached an agreement with Pacific Lumber Co., Scotia, Ca., to come down from an old growth redwood.
According to the agreement, Hill and her supporters will pay Palco $50,000 for lost logging revenue. In return, the firm will spare Hill's tree and 2.9 acres around it, plus give the money to Humboldt State for forestry studies.
"We have reached this preservation agreement in order to end this controversy and focus positive public attention on Pacific Lumber's real commitment to the environment. the community, and job preservation," said John Campbell, Palco's president and ceo. "We are reaching out to the environmental community with an out-

Oregon Sham Man Must Pay
A recent Oregon fraud case illustrates why law-abiding lumber professionals must take adequate precautions for their own protection.
In October, a Lane County Circuit Court judge awarded Empire Wholesale Lumber Co., Akron, Oh., a $253.258.1 3 judgment against Benjamin R. Meyers of Eugene.
The case began in August 1993 when Meyers' now defunct Meyers Lumber Sales, Inc., Eugene, began brokering lumber for Empire, according to Empire attorney Gregory E. Veralrud. Under terms of the agreement, Empire would purchase lumber for Meyers' firm to remanufacture and sell, with both companies dividing the profits and losses.
Beginning in April 1994, however, Veralrud says, Meyers started to fraudulently conceal sales by creating his own customer invoices and factoring them through Eugene Forest Products Inc., without disclosing Empire's interest in the wood. To disguise his ruse, Meyers repeatedly told Empire that the wood wasn't selling due to poor market conditions.
Thanks to a tip from another local broker, Empire confronted Meyers in September 1995 and he confessed. When Meyers farled to repay Empire as promised, the firm filed a complaint. In turn, Meyers flled the first of a series of bankruptcies, according to Veralrud.
The case went to trial in September 1999, where it was soon discovered that Meyers had multiple bad check and felony theft-related convictions, and had served time in jail in the 1980s.
After extcnsive testimony from lumber professionals who complained of financial losses from doing business with Meyers, the defendant was found guilty of product theft, fraudulently entering into a business relationship, and misrepresenting sales figures and profit margins. In addition, he was denied fiom seeking bankruptcy, Veralrud says.
While Eugene Forest Products was ignorant of Empire's interest in the wood products and invoices, the firm was advised by the judge to take the steps necessary to create and perfect a
security interest in accounts required by the UCC.
"These legal proceedings have involved a great deal of energy and expense over the past four years," said Harvey Graves, Empire Wholesale's ceo. "It was clear to us that Meyers had stolen from us, and it is indeed gratilying to have the court agree. We were determined that Meyers should not be able to further manipulate the bankruptcy system by using countless delaying tactics, at taxpayers' expense, to avoid responsibility for his wrongful actions."

Palco Gets New License
The California Forestry Department approved a two-year logging license for Pacific Lumber Co., Scotia, Ca., in a conditional agreement that lets state officials inspect harvest areas without warning.
Jim Branham, Palco's director of government relations, said the license also contains additional conditions, including allowing forestry officials to attend private company harvest meetings. "They basically have access to our timberlands any time they like and notice beyond what is required of other companies when we are having harvest meetings," he said.
The agreement covers about 200.000 acres Palco owns in Northern California, and stems from a variety of logging violations over the past few years, according to Branham. He added that the firm received 12 violations from the forestry department in 1999. 49 violations in 1998 and 126

violations in 1997.
According to Branham, however, the firm's improvement in the past few years led the state to grant the license, which is required to cut trees in the state and will be reviewed at the end the year.
"The department said that compliance had improved substantially since 1997," he said, adding that the agreement also gives forestry officials keys to the company's gates to provide inspectors access to the property at any time. It also makes the company liable for triple penalties for cutting timber in the no-cut zone and requires data to be provided pertaining to threatened wildlife.

r In-store tool rental centers, which have proved popular--especially with contractors-in a 150-store test, will be increased to about 400 locations.
o More proprietary products will be introduced to differentiate the chain from such competitors as Sears and Lowe's. One new brand, RoboHammer. is a shock-absorbent hammer with a custom grip for either hand.
r Home improvement loans, now being tested at 60 stores, will be offered at all U.S. stores next year. Two unidentified lenders will provide shoppers with unsecured credit lines up to $20,000. The origination fees go to Depot, along with the possibility of selling homeowners higher priced projects.
. By the end of next year, most stores will carry major appliances through partnerships with Whirlpool and General Electric.

Ace Opens Prototype Store
Ushering in the 2lst Century, Ace Hardware unveiled its new prototype "Store 21" in Longview, Wa.
Developed by a core team of Ace managers, multi-store Ace retailers and consultants, the 24,000-sq. ft. store features the standard product assortment. as well as unique merchandise and services previously
unavailable in a mid-sized hardware store.
The emphasis is on convenience, selection and information. Store 21, also known as "Your Neighborhood Solutions Place," includes an outdoor garden center with greenhouse and extensive service area, plus a mutltimedia solutions center at the back of the store. Near the center of the store is an area dedicated to presenting product demonstrations, seminars and workshops.
Products are grouped according to how consumers use them rather than by price or product classification. "In-store signage with titles such as 'Water Works' for plumbing prod-
ucts, 'Colorful World' for decorating supplies and sundries, and 'Home Shoppe' for housewares and gifts illustrate some of the groupings that comprise the Store 2l layout," says v.p. of merchandising Ray Griffith.
Customers entering the store are greeted by a store representative who will politely ask if they may direct them to a store area or help with any questions. Interlinked by radio headsets, staff can communicate and relay customers to the appropriate aisle or area, where another team member will be waiting to assist them.
The next Store 2l opens later this year in Highlands Ranch (Denver), Co.

Demo Home Peeks Behind Walls
Building quality, safe, cost-effective homes using engineered wood and innovative construction technology is the subject of a comprehensive educational demonstration project at the International Builders' Show Jan. 14-17 in Dallas.
The project-being promoted as the "Behind the Walls House"-showcases building materials and systems and details installation guidelines for products normally hidden when a show home is on display. The 2,000-sq. ft., two-
story open-wall demonstration home will be built in the parking lot adjacent to the main entrance to the Dallas Convention Center.
Project co-sponsors include APA-The Engineered Wood Association and the Structural Insulated Panel Association. Products used include wood I-joists, glulams, LVL, premanufactured building systems, structural insulated panels, plywood, OSB, composite siding and trim, and wood windows and doors.
"Our members' engineered wood products are critical to the strength, safety and durability ofa structure, but they are hidden behind the walls, floor and roof of a finished home," said Dennis Hardman, APA v.p. of mktg. "This demonstration allows us to show builders proper application techniques and innovative building practices, systems and products in a full scale, real-life situation."
Presentations are scheduled throughout the four-day National Association of Home Builders event to highlight many of the design and construction considerations when using building systems and engineered wood products.
The house will be a marriage of open wall panels (with 2x6 framing) and structural insulated panels. The first floor, first floor walls and second floor walls are panelized by American Standard Building Systems, Martinsville, Va. The second level walls and roof use structural insulated panels from the Structural Insulated Panel Association.

Hayward Lumber's Family Ties
Hayward Lumber Co., Monterey, Ca., celebrated its 80th anniversary by throwing a big bash, complete with wild animals, lumberjack shows, music, food and drinks.
The generous shindig that the six-location firm treated its 289 employees to is another example of why the company has prospered since its humble beginnings in nearby Salinas in 1919.
From the start, founder Homer T. Hayward treated his employees as if they were f'amily, believing all concerned would profit from such trust.
Four generations later, the firm boasts yards in Salinas, Pacific Grove, San Luis Obispo, Santa Cruz and Santa Maria, Ca., and great-grandson/president and ceo, William E. "BilI" Hayward, continues to put tremendous faith in his employees. "We've always felt as if we are a family business," he said. "We try and take care of people and run it that way. I've taken genuine care to make that a principal focus of the company."
Hayward isn't just issuing lip service. Last year, the firm increased wages and made significant improvements to employee health care and retirement benefits.
HomeBase Must Pay Back Rent
HomeBase has been ordered to pay a former landlord $135,000 in back rent (see Dec., p. 26).
The landlord accused the retailer of underpaying rent for two-and-a-half months after closing its Fullerton, Ca., store. HomeBase countered that it wasn't obligated to pay full rent if occupancy at the retail center fell below 62.5Vo. But the judge ruled that the center's occupancy fell below the level due to HomeBase's closure.

ldaho Lumberman Pens Book
Bud Filler, co-owner and president, Filler King Co. and Jump Creek Lumber Co., Homedale, Id., has written a book about his days as a smokejumper for the U.S. Forest Service.
Two-Man Sticl< covers the years between 1952-1956 when this controversial method of fighting forest fires was in its infancy. Smokejumping involved dropping men from the skies by parachute to get to ablaze while it was still small. While such operations were dangerous, jumpers have been credited with saving large tracts of inaccessible Western timberlands.

SOUTHERN pine lumber
L industrv crossed the thrcshold rto the new millennium on the heels
I a most successlul 1999. Total prouction during 1999 was on track to )t a new all-time record, surpassing re previous record of 16.27 billion C. ft., set way back in 1909. The rdustry has enjoyed this cycle of roming housing markets.
In addition, member producers reaped the benefits of aggressive marketing efforts under our Vision 2000 campaign to maintain southern pine's market share in the face of increasin-s cornpetition from compcting specics and alternative non-wood materials. However, as an industry, we are not resting on our laurels. The challenges ahead are ripe with opportuni-
ties, too. Key audiences-architects, engineers, builders, remodelers, lumber dealers-continue to be impressed with southern pine's inherent advantages: superior strength, durability and treatability. It's up to us as an association to maintain southern pine's share of markets through targeted promotion, technical assistance, and strategic partnerships with allied

It is structured upon five key priorities: Market Priorities, Product Quality, Higher Education Programs, Rapid Response, and Partnerships.
Three-Year Forecast
Recently, Southern Forest Products Association and APA-The Engineered Wood Association completed a three-year forecast for structural
North American lumber
production is forecast to decline about 3% next vear.
wood markets. The forecast assumes that the growth rate of U.S. Cross Domestic Product will slow as interest rates are nudged higher by the Federal Reserve Board in order to stem inflation fears. GDP is forecast to decline trom 3.3Vo this year to 2.8Vo in 2000 and 2.5Vo in2}Ol.
The effect on housing, the primary market for both the lumber and panel industries, will be to reduce single and multi-family starts from L62 million this year to 1.54 million in 2000 and 1.5 million in 2001. Single-family units consume on average 14,200 bd. ft. of lumber, while multifamily units use 5,540 bd. ft. of lumber. Declines in housing starts will be partially offset by gains in export markets as the dollar weakens and economies recover around the world, particularly in Asia. The Caribbean, Mexico, Japan and Europe account for three-fourths of all southern pine lumber, total North American lumber, and structural wood panel exports.
Over the three-year forecast period, the outlook is for a modest 37o decline in North American lumber output due to lower housing starts and market share inroads by other glued engineered lumber products.
North American lumber production is forecast to decline about 37o next year, from 64.21 billion bd. ft. to 62.26 billion, and to dip below 62 billion ft. in 2001 belore rebounding again in 2O02 to 62.46 billion. U.S. production is forecast to total just
over 34 billion ft. in 2000, with Canadian production at 28.2 billion.
SFPA forecasts the following levels of southern pine lumber production, through 2004:
1999: 16.50 billion bd. ft.
2000: 15.52 billion bd. ft.
20Ol: 16.42 billion bd. ft.
2002: 16 45 billion bd. ft.
2003: 15.31 billion bd. ft.
2004: 16.45 billion bd. ft.
Of the nearly 53 billion bd. ft. of lumber expected to be consumed in the U.S. next year, almost l9 billion ft. will be imported. Canada, on the other hand, exports ncarly threefourths of its lumber production.
North American glulam timber production is fbrecast to total 335 million bd. ti. this year, up l2Vo fiom last year, and to rise to 358 million fi. by 2002. Much of that increase will be fueled by economic recovery in Japan, the glulam industry's largest export market. Total glulam exports are expected to be only about 15 million bd. fi. this year, but to rise to 55 million ft. by 2002.
Paramount Besource tssues
Issues centered around our industry's resource base will continue to be of utmost importance, and will affect how we do business in the 2lst Century. SFPA proactively supports efforts to increase rates of new plantings and develop genetically superior trees to meet the resource demands for generations to come. During
Expo '99 in Atlanta, SFPA sponsored six logging seminars, offering the latest information plus certification credits to loggers.
The virtual shutdown of timber harvesting on federal timberlands in the West coupled with spot shutdowns in the East has shifted lumber demand to the South and offshore.
An implication for the Southern non-industrial private landowner is pressure to harvest early to take advantage of recent boosts in lumber prices. This has resulted in more pressure on growing stock and southern pine sawtimber inventories.
Finally, the lack of proper timber management caused by no logging is a serious forest health problem for our federal lands. Since so many nonindustrial private landowners have common boundaries with federal lands, these forest health problems inf'ect non-industrial private forests. This may be an unintended consequence of the federal government's "no harvest policy," but it is very real to private landowners who have to contend with forest health problems at their expense. For the good of America, it is strategically important that timber harvests be allowed on federal land for the benefit of private landowners and local economies.
A Future Of Promise
SP producers are key players in the global economy. The 2lst Century is our chance to show the world the progress we've made and further pro' mote the benefits of wood-our only renewable building material.
