L E T TER F ROM TH E P R ES IDENT Dear HBRA Members and Guests, Thank you for coming to our annual meeting. Over the past year, the HBRA of Fairfield County has had some major changes. First and foremost we hired a new Executive Officer, Jackie Bertolone, who hit the ground running and is off to a great start. The HBRA has also joined a new pilot program with the National Association of Home Builders which will redefine how we charge membership dues and what we can offer to members. This will allow us to offer you more benefits through membership. In addition, we are proud of the great educational and networking events this year which continue to be well attended. Our educational classes have been full and have offered a wide variety of topics, from OSHA to Code Compliance. Our annual golf outing, held this year at Tashua Knolls in Trumbull, has been growing every year thanks to our dedicated volunteers and staff. Our bowling night at Nutmeg Bowling in Fairfield was also a big hit and we are looking forward to doing it again. Overall, our office has been doing a great job of planning great events and we are looking forward to more exciting new things in the future. Tonight, I am also honored to be installing Anthony DeRosa as the next President of the HBRA of Fairfield County. Anthony has tremendous dedication and drive, and I am confident that not only will Anthony keep our organization moving forward, he will continue to help it grow. Lastly, I would like to congratulate all the reward recipients and thank all members for a wonderful two years as President. Chris Steiner President

Dear HBRA Members Growing up in a small family home-building business has given me great appreciation for the challenges, risks and rewards of our industry. It has become more difficult over the last few years with the increasing regulations and taxes in Connecticut; but I have great hope that if we work together and get involved we can make the next five years better than the last. It is an honor to head up an association that serves the businesses that build our local community and economy. The mission of our association is to help promote, protect and improve the building industry here in Fairfield County and I intend to keep that mission close as we plan our future continuing education trainings, events and lobbying efforts. I’m also overwhelmed by the generosity and dedication of our volunteers that help keep our office running and our events so much fun. Its’ wonderful to see so many of our members believing in our mission and working to help improve our industry. The slogan “members doing business with members” benefits our businesses and makes our association more attractive to new businesses. I hope you all keep this in mind when choosing your products, suppliers, insurance programs and financial services. REMODELER OF THE YEAR For the past 26 years, Peter — son of Founder and President Sal Sciarretta — Doug Horn and Michael Sciarretta have grown Hemingway Construction in Greenwich, Connecticut into an award-winning, high-end residential general contracting firm, overseeing and managing the plan, design, and development of residential homes in Fairfield, Westchester, and Palm Beach counties. A resident of Stamford, Peter has been a standing member of the HBA CT for over 25 years. He’s been a commissioner and then chairperson of Stamford’s Urban Redevelopment Commission, serving on the budget and development committees. He volunteers on the Access 4 All Committee, an American Disability Act compliance group. From 20062010, he served on the Board of Directors for the Darien/ Stamford chapter of the American Red Cross, receiving special recognition for his generosity. NEW MEMBER OF THE YEAR Justin currently serves as Director of Business Development at Eastern Metal Works, a Milford Connecticut based structural and ornamental steel fabricator. Her firm, JMC Resources, combines traditional PR with online and social media marketing. Following ten years as vice-president of the nationally recognized architectural firm, Zane Yost & Associates, Mrs. Carroll opened her consulting firm, JMC Resources, LLC in 1992, and for the past twenty-six years, she has promoted builders and suppliers through local, regional and national media placement and social media engagement; as well as conducting qualitative focus group research; and grass roots campaigns in support of residential development. Since 1993, Joanne Carroll has served as editor/ publisher of the Home Builders & Remodelers Association of Connecticut trade magazine, CONNECTICUT BUILDER. In 1993, she originated the HOBI Awards, and for 25 years she has produced this annual association awards program, which recognizes excellence and value in new home construction and remodeling, home products and new home sales & marketing. The HOBI Awards Dinner has grown to be the largest builder awards event in the country. Joanne has been a speaker at NAHB conventions, Home Builders Institute seminars and statewide conferences and meetings. She serves on the board of directors of the National Association of Home Builders, and the Home Builders & Remodelers Association of Connecticut. She is a member of the National Institute of Residential Marketing, past chairman of the HBRA of Connecticut Sales and Marketing Council and Public Relations Committee, and she served from the year 2000-2002 as the first woman president of the Fairfield County Home Builders & Remodelers Association.

Peter originally started out as a real estate attorney in Manhattan in 1982. By 1988, he realized that his true passion was for construction and began building spec homes – later forming Bear Paw Builders and its sister company, Bear Paw Excavating, in 1994. Over the course of 30 years, Bear Paw has built more than 75 high-end custom and spec homes throughout Fairfield County and completed hundreds of renovations. In addition, Mr. Overland is an award-winning architect.
LEIGH OVERLAND Architect, AIA, NCARB Leigh Overland Architect Established in 1980, Mr. Overland’s firm is certified in the Overland Design Group states of NY, NJ and CT, and can practice nationally through
NCARB. His philosophy of “Creativity isn’t enough” has served as the basis for his architectural principles and values. His firm’s motto is “Good Design Doesn’t Just Happen”. In more recent years, Leigh Overland has become a leading expert in high efficiency, fire / storm resistant design. He is often called upon for speaking for engagements. Many of his present projects are ICF (insulated concrete forms) construction. His firm has done hundreds of residential alterations, additions, new homes and commercial projects including Optimum Medical, LLC, Waterview, Candlewood & Riverview Banquet Facilities, and many well-known restaurants. ABC’s Extreme Home Makeover – Home Addition asked Mr. Overland to be the architect for the Connecticut home, which aired October 14th, 2007. Leigh has donated his services and funds to countless non-profit organizations and has been published over 40 times.

70 YEARS AND BEYOND The Home Builders And Remodelers Association of Fairfield County celebrates over 70 years of serving businesses in the industry. A not-for-profit trade association, the HBRA is made up of builders, material suppliers, subcontractors, lending institutions, utilities, designers and many others whose primary interests are in the promotion, protection, and improvement of the building industry.
HISTORY “Greater Bridgeport Builders Association Inc,” was the original name selected by a small group of men who felt the need for an association which would promote housing and the housing industry. From January 20, 1947, the association has fought for the interests of the building community. In 1954 the name was officially changed to the Home Builders Association of Fairfield County. Since it’s inception, the association has survived several separate recessions and remains strong today. We are celebrating the 41st year of our member directory. Ever since it was first published in 1977, the directory has continued to be one of the largest fundraisers for the association. The directory is a valuable resource to members and the general public looking to find a trusted business in our industry. The books are distributed to all members and available at our events to guests. Our longest running council, the Associates Council, was established in 1995 in order to develop programs to encourage member to member business. They continue to promote this goal with a variety of events throughout the year. We now have a Golf Committee, a Special Event Committee, the Associate’s Council, the Professional Women In Building Council, the Membership Committee, and a variety of other temporary committees that are dedicated to helping the association meet the needs of its members.
MEMBER RECOGNITION None of the above would be possible without the help and support of our members. In conjunction with the awards given out tonight, we would like to recognize more than 40 members who have been integral to the association spanning several decades. We would like to make special mention of Steiner Inc, the longest standing member of the HBRA, dating back to the 1950’s.
