DuPage County Wins Three National Awards

Wheaton – DuPage County received three Achievement Awards from the National Association of Counties (NACo). The awards honor innovative, effective county government programs that strengthen services for residents.

“DuPage County strives for excellence and seeks to be a leader at the state and national levels.

We are grateful to receive this recognition from NACo and thrilled to share these programs with counties across the nation,” said County Board Chair Deborah Conroy.

Each year, NACo’s Achievement Awards recognize outstanding programming in 18 categories aligned with the vast, comprehensive services counties provide.

The categories include children and youth, criminal justice and

public safety, libraries, management, information tech nology, health, civic engagement and more. Launched in 1970, the program is designed to celebrate innovation in county government. Each nominated program is judged on its own merits and not against other applications.

“The Achievement Awards shine a spotlight on the hard work and innovation happening in county governments across the nation,” said NACo President James Gore. “This year’s winners highlight the dedication and creativity of county leaders and our teams to building thriving communities and providing the best possible services to our residents.”

DuPage County won awards for the following programs:

DuPage County Hinsdale Lake Terrace Rideshare Access Program

Recognizing the economic and transportation access disadvantages faced by residents of the Hinsdale Lake Terrace community in southeast DuPage County, DuPage County government approached Pace Suburban Bus and partnered with Uber to provide mobility services for the community.

The Hinsdale Lake Terrace Rideshare Access Program began in January 2025, built out of conversations with residents regarding mobility and economic needs.

Stormwater Management’s Water Quality Improvement Program Grant

DuPage County Stormwater Management recognizes the financial burden a property owner may face undertaking a project that improves regional water quality.

Stormwater Management’s WQIP is a competitive grant that provides financial assistance to projects providing a regional water quality benefit to local waterways.

The grant funds up to 25% of eligible construction costs for water quality improvement projects.

The program offers vouchers to residents for a ride anywhere within a local service area for medical services, grocery, employment, and other purposes.

18th Judicial Circuit Court Guardianship Help Desk

The 18th Judicial Circuit Court Guardianship Help Desk was designed to provide caretakers and families with an opportunity to speak with an experienced attorney about their specific case, at the crucial court date on which they may be granted guardianship.

Every Tuesday the court devotes the call to Self-Represented Litigants and the Help Desk staffs at least two volunteer attorneys who answer questions about the court process, review all paperwork and make sure everything is to establish guardianship or help complete necessary paperwork, prior to the litigants presenting their case to a judge that same day.

DuPage County initiated the grant program in 2000 and awarded approximately $6.6 million to 112 projects to date.

County Courthouse Cooling Centers Open During Excessive Heat

Cook County is opening cooling centers as heat indices as high as 100 are forecast for the region Saturday through Tuesday. Cook County is opening cooling centers at the Skokie, Maywood and Markham Courthouses continuously from Saturday, June 21 at noon through Tuesday, June 24 at 5 p.m. Residents who do not have adequate access to air conditioning are advised to seek respite at a cooling center.

The Cook County Department of Emergency Management and Regional Security offers the following tips during excessive summer heat to help keep residents safe:

• Stay hydrated and avoid alcohol and sugary drinks

• Try to stay in the shade or indoors as much as possible

• If working outside, take frequent breaks, preferably in an air-conditioned space

• Take pets indoors and make sure they have plenty of water

• Never leave children or pets unattended in a vehicle

• It’s also important to check on relatives, neighbors, seniors and members of vulnerable populations when temperatures climb to extreme levels. If you must work or spend extended time outdoors, watch for symptoms of heatstroke, when the body starts to lose its ability to regulate itself.

The signs of heatstroke include:

• An extremely high body temperature, 103 degrees or above Dizziness and nausea

• A throbbing headache and a pulse that is rapid and strong

•Skin that is red, hot and dry

If there is a medical emergency due to a heat-related illness, call 9-1-1.

A complete list of cooling centers along with their hours of operation is available at www.cookcountyil.gov

Stay Cool Chicago

The City of Chicago has services available to help residents cope safely with extreme weather conditions. Those resources will be even more impactful with your support. Make a special effort to check on your friends and neighbors during a heat wave, especially if they are older adults, young children, live alone or are people with special needs.

KEEP YOUR COOL DURING EXTREME HOT WEATHER. CALL 3-1-1 TO:

•Locate a cooling center near you that is open.

•Request a well-being check for someone.

•Drink lots of water, avoid alcoholic beverages, coffee, and sodas.

•Avoid going outside in extreme heat.

• If you don’t have air conditioning, keep shades drawn and blinds closed, with windows slightly open.

•If you must be outside, seek shade.

•Keep electric lights off or turned off.

•Minimize your use of your stove or oven.

•Wear loose, light, cotton clothing.

•Take cool baths and showers.

•Don’t leave anyone (including pets) in a parked car, even for a few minutes.

•Never leave children, older adults, or those who require special care during periods of intense summer heat.

•Older adults and others who may be sensitive to extreme heat should contact friends, neighbors, or relatives periodically throughout the day.

•Seek help if you feel symptoms of heat related illnesses.

REMEMBER

Check on relatives, neighbors and friends. If you are unable to make contact, call 3-1-1 and request a well-being check.

Plainfield Police begins Fourth of July traffic safety campaign

The Plainfield Police Department announced plans for July Fourth traffic enforcement with a focus on unbuckled drivers.

The safety campaign will run from June 20 through July 7 to encompass three summer weekends leading up to and after Independence Day.

“We’re asking all of our residents and visitors to celebrate Independence Day safely,” said Sgt. Dino Dabezic “Our officers will be working diligently to ensure everyone is buckled up.”

The Plainfield Police will join the Illinois State Police and more than 200 local police and sheriff’s departments for the

statewide effort.

To celebrate safely, make sure everyone in your vehicle wears their seat belt. Not only is it the law, but it’s also your best defense against an impaired driver.

The “Click It or Ticket” campaigns are made possible by federal traffic safety funds administered by the Illinois Department of Transportation.

The enforcement efforts are complemented by IDOT’s “It’s Not a Game” media campaign, which emphasizes the serious consequences of impaired driving and other unsafe driving behaviors.

Fire features for outdoor living areas

Elemental features in a backyard living space can elevate a property to an exciting new level. Many homeowners already have water features that create a tranquil ambiance, and enhancing such spaces with fire can make them even more alluring.

Fire features add warmth to a yard and flickering flames can be mesmerizing to watch. Fire features also create intimate areas around which to gather, something that can make a large yard much more cozy. There’s bound to be a design or a fire option that meets the needs of most homeowners.

The following are some fire features homeowners may want to incorporate into their outdoor living designs.

Chiminea

Homeowners who enjoy a rustic look may want to consider a chiminea. This element has a cylindrical or bulbous body with a front opening into which wood or another fuel is placed. Traditionally they are made from terracotta, but they also come in cast iron, aluminum and steel. Metal options are among the most

LEGAL NOTICES

durable, according to The Family Handyman. The tall chimney on the chiminea directs smoke upwards, keeping it away from homeowners and their guests.

Wood-burning fire pit

Traditional fire pits can be made from different materials. Freestanding units may be metal, but stationary fire pits can be built from stone, brick or even pavers. These fire pits are available at various price points.

Gas fire pit

Beautiful Blooms Landscaping says homeowners may want to think about a gas fire pit, which is less hands-on than wood-burning offerings. These structures use either propane or natural gas to create a flame and heat without the need for wood. They are cleaner and more convenient, too.

Smokeless fire pit

A double wall design in smokeless fire pits creates a burst of hot air over the fire to reduce smoke output, says HGTV. Even though they’re powered by wood logs, smokeless fire pits won’t cause the campfire smell that sticks to clothes and hair.

Fire table or bowl

These fire features double as pieces of art. They are gas-powered and often turn on at the flick of a switch. A fire table may have a column of flames in the middle of a traditional patio table, contributing to an amazing ambiance at night. Fire tables are more decorative than functional in terms of heat output.

Outdoor fireplace

Whether wood-burning or gas, outdoor fireplaces are focal points for any yard. They create perfect settings for gatherings, and the relaxing atmosphere that ensues may have people spending hours gazing at the flames.

Outdoor fireplaces are labor-intensive to create, so they will feature the highest price tag of any backyard fire elements.

Outfitting an outdoor living area with a fire feature is a great way to create more excitement in the space.
