Avery Coonley School Named U.S. Department of

Education Green Ribbon School by ISBE The Avery Coonley School is proud to announce its selection as a U.S. Department of Education Green Ribbon School, recognized by the Illinois State Board of Education for exemplary efforts in environmental stewardship, health and wellness, and sustainability education. This prestigious recognition places Avery Coonley among a select group of schools nationwide that embody the three “pillars” of the Green Ribbon program: Pillar I: Reduced Environmental Impact and Costs Pillar II: Improved Health and Wellness Pillar III: Effective Environmental and Sustainability Education Notable initiatives at Avery Coonley contributing to the award include the

School’s student-run vernal window research project in collaboration with Maple Grove Forest Preserve, weather station, air quality research supporting the local forest preserves, green-themed TEDx events, energy-efficient campus upgrades, AI hydroponic garden systems, and innovative environmental curriculum aligned with real-world challenges. “This recognition reflects the tremendous passion, collaboration, and commitment of our students, educators, staff, and families to make the school environmentally sustainable,” said Dr. Kirsty Montgomery, Head of School at Avery Coonley. Kenny Bae, Director of Innovation and Sustainability, emphasized the importance of encouraging environmentally responsible students and supporting student-led sustainability efforts, which are aligned with Avery Coonley’s 2025-2030 Strategic Plan. Coonley received a Proclamation Letter from Illinois Governor JB Pritzker, honoring Avery Coonley’s leadership in creating a healthier and more sustainable learning environment for students and the community.
