WELCOME TO THE SETT From the Chairman … As Chairman of Bugbrooke St Michael’s Football Club I would like to offer you a warm welcome to The Sett and hope that you have an enjoyable visit. Here at Bugbrooke St Michaels we are working hard to develop a club with a strong inclusive ethos, offering opportunities for players of all ages and abilities. We are extremely proud of our youth development programme, supporting players from seven all the way up to eighteen. Many of our young players go on to have success with one of adult teams, with some players going on to even bigger and better things! There is a great wealth of local support for the club, everyone that helps does so on a voluntary basis and through everyone’s hard work and dedication we have been able to achieve and maintain FA Accredited status.
Whilst some clubs choose to reinvest their revenue into players wages, here at Bugbrooke we hold a different set of values. All of our profits go into upgrading our equipment and facilities, building a solid future-proof foundation that will be here for future generations to enjoy. Whilst this can sometimes hold us back from gaining huge success on the pitch, we feel our excellent facilities, youth development programme and ethos on community set us apart from other clubs. MANAGERS NOTES We’d like to extend a warm welcome to the players, officials and supporters of Leicester Nirvana who are the visitors to the Sett for todays United Counties Premier Division South fixture.
Today’s game represents our first home fixture of the calendar year, providing us the opportunity to return to winning ways following a disappointing defeat at the hands of Lutterworth Town last time out. It won’t be easy, and we will certainly not underestimate our visitors who despite their position at the foot of the table are on a good run of form with just one defeat in their last four and that was at the hands of high-flying St Neots Town! For various reasons the past few weeks have proved to be a challenging period for ourselves. Its that time of the year when injuries and suspensions take their toll, which coupled with us having to field 7-day approaches for several players has stretched the squad to its limit. It’s no secret that we have one of the smallest budgets in the league which is remarkable considering its possibly the biggest our club has ever made available. For that we are grateful. To be positioned where we are at this stage of the season is a fantastic achievement and is something that we are rightly proud of as we are our Youth programme which continues to be amongst the best in the County and remains a key source of talent into our senior teams, long may it continue! As mentioned, our achievements have not gone unnoticed, and it is with regret that we have seen both Luke Emery and Eddie Panter move to pastures new this week. Luke has made the move to Step 4 joining AFC Rushden & Diamonds whilst Eddie has moved down the A45 to join divisional rivals Wellingborough Town. Disappointing as it is we wish both players the best of luck, they leave on good terms and know that they will always be welcomed back at the Sett. OUR HISTORY
Formed in 1929, Bugbrooke St. Michael’s Football Club took over from Bugbrooke United who folded in 1928 after being in existence since 1910. The club, which is named after the local St. Michael’s and All Angels Church, initially took its place in the Northants Central Village League and had immediate success, winning the league title from 1931 to 1937. The club closed for the Second World War before reforming in 1947 and were once again successful winning the CVL title from 1947 to 1950 and were Northants Lower Junior Cup runners-up in 1949, a feat repeated in 1954. We finally won the N.F.A. Lower Junior Cup in 1956 and followed this in 1957 by winning the prestigious Daventry Charity Cup. The club had its most successful years from 1966 to 1972 when we won the Northants Central Combination Premier title and again from 1976 to 1979 with 1977 also seeing us win the N.F.A. Lower Junior Cup again. The club continued to succeed in the Northants Combination until 1987 when the we took the decision to join the United Counties League.
At this time, we decided to run two teams in the U.C.L. and two teams in the C.N.C. We also began our youth section and have continued this ever since. Today we run 4 adult sides, including a recently formed Ladies team as well as 15 youth teams. The club has had continued to enjoy success across all age groups over those 30 years, the most notable being N.F.A. Junior Cup winners in 1992, N.F.A Lower Junior Cup in 1993 and U.C.L. Division One winners in 2001. The reputation for producing successful youth teams has increased over those years and 4 of our youth players (under 16) have been signed by professional league clubs. The achievements of the club on the field have always been supported by a hardworking committee whose chief officers are recorded on a roll in the clubhouse foyer. They along with supporters of the club have built up the excellent changing rooms and clubhouse since 1980. We hope that you enjoy the facilities that they have provided over those years, and we look forward to seeing you again in the future

PROTECT THE GAME.’ A message from Bugbrooke St Michaels Football Club about antisocial and criminal behaviour As we commence the new season we want to make you aware of new measures being taken across all of football, and the NLS, to ensure everyone can have a safe and enjoyable experience. We are supporting strong action from the FA, and across the NLS to tackle antisocial and criminal behaviours that put all of us at risk. Please remember the following activities are illegal, dangerous, have serious consequences and have no place in our game: • Carrying or using smoke bombs or pyros • Invading the pitch or entering the pitch without permission
For everyone’s safety, we will report anyone carrying out these offences to the police, which can result in a criminal record. Anyone who enters the pitch without permission and those carrying or using smoke bombs or pyros will now receive an automatic club ban. These measures could also now apply to the parents or guardians of children involved in these activities. This reflects the seriousness of the risks to fans and staff – pyros can burn at 2000 degrees Celsius and cause life changing injuries, while entering the pitch endangers players, managers and match officials. It also impacts the hard working volunteers, who ensure that our special part of the game continues to run.

Over time the club has developed and restructured, we have a development club that focusses on providing opportunities for young players aged 5-9 to access structured coaching in a friendly and nurturing environment. The club also has teams that are part of the grassroots leagues systems, our teams go from Under 7’s through to adults. Nirvana is known for developing young talented players and strong teams with many of those teams playing at the higher end of the league structures. Today, Nirvana embodies more than a football club and aims to be a platform that allows young people life changing opportunities via football or other arenas. With a strong community focus, Nirvana will continue to fuse football and the sporting development of individuals, with the wider support of advocacy to influence public policy and the decisions that ultimately affect our members. Nirvana FC began its activities in Leicester in the mid-1980s growing out of the Red Star youth group in the city. The club has always had a strong BME holding but discriminates against no one and welcomes all. A real local community club for the whole city, especially for parents and their children from multi-racial inner-city backgrounds. Nirvana is a true local melting pot around the integrative sport of football.
Starting on Victoria Park in south Leicester in the local Mutual League, Nirvana lacked the resources and the facilities demanded by the local football pyramid. In 1989 the club’s senior adult side moved out of Leicestershire football to join the Central Midlands League. But in the early 1990s, frustrated with a lack of access to resources in adult football in Leicester, club members began to think about developing a very different sort of club focusing on youngsters only. In 1994 Leicester Nirvana was born. As football for children really took off in Leicester in the 1990s so Nirvana grew, a positive haven for inner city kids, and for Leicester children from wider afield. Because of its enthusiasm and care the club recruited some of the most talented young players in the city.
After establishing as a very successful junior club, the club-initiated discussions to re-establish a senior team for the young players to aspire to. This started in 2008 and the club entered a team in the Leicester City Football League. However, at the same time the club-initiated conversations relating to the possibility merging with Thurnby Rangers to give us a pathway to Step 7, at this point Thurnby Nirvana was born. Leicester Nirvana FC and Thurnby Rangers FC had both established their own identities at a local football level. Thurnby Rangers being a successful senior side in the early years 2001-03 in which time Leicester Nirvana no longer had a senior side but had an outstanding reputation at mini, junior and youth football levels both locally and nationally. Over the past period they have contributed to the development of players with to date 8 professionals playing at pro clubs and approximately 15 youths at academies across the country, who have been through the club's youth system, an outstanding return. In the build up of the 2008/09 season the decision to merge was only reached seven days before the season kicked off which left us scrambling to sign 15 players and get a team ready for the first fixture. Thankfully with the hard work of many individuals and a new merged management committee, we managed to field a team and finish in a very respectable 5th place. Considering our initiation to senior league football and the steep learning curve relating to the entire off field responsibility, as a club we were pleased with our return, although as a club first is always our goal. Season 2009/10 started with more optimism, we had time to plan and prepare a good pre-season programme with many new players being attracted to the club given our total football style of play. Again, with both the on and off field learning curves we finished a respectable third in only our second season involved in adult football. We, as a club applied to the East Midland Counties League for promotion and after an extremely eventful summer and an enormous amount of effort and work behind the scenes, secured a place at Step 6 of the National league system.
The 2010/11 season was a new chapter in the club’s history, competing in the East Midlands Counties league at Step 6 for the first time. The club firmly established themselves at this level with a respectable 9th place finish in the league, which was a good return with a young and somewhat inexperienced squad with an average age of 23. The season also saw defeat in the County Cup final and was topped off with success in the League Cup with a 4-2 victory over Holbrook Sports. The 2011/2012 season was another learning curve in the history of the club, competing in The FA Cup for the first time. The season looked rather promising at the beginning after an explosive start and a memorable scalp of St Neots Town in the FA Cup, however inconsistency led to a 7th place finish in the league. The 2012/13 season proved to be another exciting chapter in the short history of the club. Once again, The FA Cup brought excitement with great victories over Lincoln Moorlands and Lincoln United in the Preliminary rounds, however we again fell at the First Qualifying round losing to Gresley in the replay. In terms of the league, this season was our best to date, an incredible run from December, which included 19 victories, 1 draw and 2 defeats ensured a third-place finish. The 2013/14 season once again looked promising for manager Damion Quailey who had managed to add some good depth to his squad while keeping together the majority of the players from the previous season. There had also been additions to the coaching team behind the scenes which again improved our young squad. Hannah Dingley was appointed Assistant Manager with Chris Gowan and Brain Quailey making up the coaching staff. This paid off for the club by winning the East Midland Counties League. The 2014-15 season saw us playing at Level 5 in the United Counties Premier Division. A new venture for the club at this level which was again a memorable year in the history of the club. After securing the majority of the squad and again adding the few quality additions we made our mark on the UCL by finishing runners up in our first attempt. The season was also memorable as we embarked on our best run in The FA Vase by reaching the last 32, only to go out in AET during a thrilling encounter with Holbeach United. Season 2015/16 once again has seen tremendous change in the club. The club had to move from the site in Thurnby to Gleneagles Avenue and has also reverted back to its original name of ‘Leicester Nirvana. On the playing side, while a few players have progressed up the Non-league ladder, Manager Damion Quailey has re-signed the whole squad from the previous season and in addition made some good signings.
This, with the promotion of some very talented youngsters from the youth, gave the players the appetite to improve on last year’s achievements. Once again, we finished runners up only missing out on the title by Goal Difference. However, there was a sweet ending to the campaign as for the first time in the club’s history we were crowned Champions of the Leicestershire Challenge Cup by beating Barwell 3-0 at the King Power Stadium, the home of the Premier League Champions. Season 2016/17 once again threw up new challenges for the club after manager Damion Qualiey and his coaching staff moved on and the club found itself in a transition period. Many of the senior players followed suit and moved on to play at a higher level. This presented a number of talented young players with the opportunity to compete at this level. Martin Sockett, who has a vast amount of managerial experience in Non-League football, was given the task to develop the youngsters to compete, however this was short lived as Martin also moved to coach at a higher level. The club appointed Scott Goodwin as Manager, with Cheddi Gore as his assistant to stabilise the club and provide guidance to the very young squad. They were excited to work with the talent and the imminent development of moving to our very own ground. Friday 23rd December was an historic occasion when we played our first ever game at our own home of Hamilton Park, Oadby were the visitors and unfortunately for us the result went in the favour of Oadby, an entertaining 3-2 defeat in our first game at ‘Home.’ The season was once again a steep learning curve for the club and its young players. At times some of the football played was incredible, however we lacked that consistency over a stretch of games. A very inexperienced and young squad competed well given the circumstances and eventually finished 17th in the league. The 2017/18 Nick Anderson was appointed who had plenty of experience in Non-League football, and particularly the UCL. Nick was able to build on the players’ experience from last season and bring more consistency to our play. Winning the League Knock Out Cup against a strong Yaxley side was the highlight of the 2017-18 season. During the summer Nick Andersen stood down as manager. So, we went into the 2018-19 season with a new management team of Dave Clay and Graham Chambers. After a good run in the FA Vase getting through to the later stages of the competition our league form was not as good and we finished the season in the bottom half of the table. This led to Dave Clay leaving the club towards the end of the campaign.
We started the 2019-20 season with a new management team, Nick Brett who again had plenty of non-league management experience came into the post. Recruiting some key experienced players was important to nature the young squad. A more consistent season was on the cards, but to the premature ending caused by the Covid 19 pandemic.
Preparations for the 20-21 season are amongst the strangest that we have ever experienced. The Covid situation in the City of Leicester meant the government enforcing a local lockdown in Leicester which prevented us from beginning pre-season likes the rest of the country would have. Nevertheless, the squad were given individual programs to prepare and when restrictions were finally lifted on 19th August we began training in full flow. With just 12 days to prepare for an FA Cup tie! Tom Hayes brought some stability an consistency during the 21-22 season, where he developed a young side who were learning their ropes at this level. After loosing the first 10 games, we went on an unbeaten run of 14 games which propelled us into the top 5, however we ended up finishing 11th. The new season as always comes with new challenges however, we are delighted to start the 22-23 campaign with one of our, Ryan Walker leading the side. Ryan came through the youth set up at the club and taken his first managerial role, Mike Makoni, ex Leicester City Women’s team assistant manager joins the ever-present Mark Rawle in completing the management team.
The club in football history terms is still very immature but with a great thirst and desire to keep moving onwards and upwards. The club is also proud to represent a very diverse population from across all cultures within the city. We have created a club that represents the communities in which we live today. A great achievement whilst striving for football success. Looking forward, the club is hopeful we can continue to grow at the current pace and who knows? In a short period of time we may be plying our trade at the very top of the national league system knocking on the door of the football league.

” As a Player and a Manager” A pair of deaths at the beginning of this year remind us just how difficult it is to succeed at the highest pinnacle of the footballing world. Der Kaiser, Franz Beckenbauer, was the most successful European in World Cup history, winning as a player in 1974 (after heartbreak in 1966 spurred his career and introduced The Curse of Der Kaiser to break English hearts for nearly 60 years… so far). He added a second winner’s medal as a manager in 1990, his first managerial role. More recently, Didier Deschamps has joined him in that rarified position, winning as a player in 1998, and a manager in 2018. But neither quite managed to reach the heights of Mario Zagallo, the Brazilian who won twice as a player, and then as a manager, and passed on 5th January. Zagallo had a brush with the World Cup almost before his career had even begun. Joining America FC in Rio de Janeiro when he was 17, his early training was interrupted by the military service he was required to undertake. As a young, new soldier, he was deployed as part of the security force to the Maracana Stadium to witness Brazil’s 1950 World Cup final defeat to Uruguay, a defeat that saw devastation across the nation, with the goalkeeper on the day burning the goalposts, and suicides recorded as being caused by the defeat. It certainly left a mark on Zagallo. He rejoined America but was quickly snapped up by Brazilian giants Flamengo, where he would spend the first half of his career. A tough, tricky inside-left, he made his debut in 1951, and made over 200 appearances throughout the 1950s, culminating in a callup to the 1958 World Cup side. It was a chance for Brazil to put the ghosts of 1950 to rest, with an exciting team, the undisputed star of which was a 17-year-old Pele. He and Garrincha were the driving force of the side, but Zagallo played his part. In the final, which Pele made his own, he added a goal to the 5-2 victory. Four years later, he played in every game as Brazil became the last team to retain the World Cup. But, unusually for a footballer, winning two World Cup medals as a player was only the beginning of his success.
Zagallo retired as a player in 1965 and became the manager of Botafogo where he had seen out his playing days. He saw immediate success, winning the Brazilian championship, just as the national side were struggling in England. For all their talent, they were unable to cope with such a physical approach to their ability and were kicked and pushed out of the World Cup in the Group Stage, only beating Bulgaria. Despite the injustice, there was a feeling in Brazil that the best team in the world shouldn’t have been daunted by those kinds of tactics. They turned to Zagallo, who could combine the flair of yesteryear with the gritty determination required in the 1960s. He had been part of the revolutionary introduction of a 4-2-4 as a player, but it was time for a revolution of his own. That formation, he decided, was too brittle, so he dropped a forward back into midfield. Rivellino, who had struggled to find a place in the side before, was the lucky player this opened a door for. He repaid Zagallo handsomely. The presence of Rivellino allowed Pele to demonstrate his prodigious talents, but that didn’t mean it was an easy route to the final. A close victory over holders England saw them into the semi-final, where their 1950 conquerors Uruguay were waiting. Another close game saw Brazil run out 3-1 winner, exorcising any lingering ghosts. Their two most difficult games out of the way, the final was one of the most one-sided affairs in World Cup history, as Brazil ran riot. A pretournament bootcamp to get used to the altitude in Mexico City made them fitter and stronger than their opponents, and they won the game 4-1. Zagallo was the first person ever to win as both a player and a manager. Relative malaise followed that success, despite Zagallo taking his World Champions to the semi-finals in 1974, and it would be a quarter of a century before Brazil sat at the summit of world football again. The man they turned was Mario Zagallo.
He had enjoyed a peripatetic career after 1974, splitting his time between jobs in his homeland and jobs in the middle-east. But as the 1994 World Cup closed in, Carlos Alberto Parreira realised he needed more experience. He called up Brazil’s last World Cup winning coach and asked him to join as his assistant. Zagallo agreed, and the rest is (more) history.
He remains the only man in history with four World Cup winner’s medals, and when he passed on 5th January, he was the last remaining of the 1958 World Cup squad. The most successful man in World Cup history.
