WELCOME TO THE SETT From the Chairman … As Chairman of Bugbrooke St Michael’s Football Club I would like to offer you a warm welcome to The Sett and hope that you have an enjoyable visit. Here at Bugbrooke St Michaels we are working hard to develop a club with a strong inclusive ethos, offering opportunities for players of all ages and abilities. We are extremely proud of our youth development programme, supporting players from seven all the way up to eighteen. Many of our young players go on to have success with one of adult teams, with some players going on to even bigger and better things! There is a great wealth of local support for the club, everyone that helps does so on a voluntary basis and through everyone’s hard work and dedication we have been able to achieve and maintain FA Accredited status.
Whilst some clubs choose to reinvest their revenue into players wages, here at Bugbrooke we hold a different set of values. All of our profits go into upgrading our equipment and facilities, building a solid future-proof foundation that will be here for future generations to enjoy. Whilst this can sometimes hold us back from gaining huge success on the pitch, we feel our excellent facilities, youth development programme and ethos on community set us apart from other clubs. Success and progression starts from the beginnings. Thank you for your support today, we hope that you enjoy the game, and we look forward to seeing you again soon.

MANAGERS NOTES We’d like to extend a warm welcome to the players, officials and supporters of Histon who are the visitors to the Sett for todays United Counties Premier Division South fixture. It’s hard to believe that little old Bugbrooke are facing the likes of Histon, the reality is we are and deservedly so! Following a disappointing start to the season Histon have recently made a change in the dugout, bringing in former Diamonds No.1 Chris Nunn. In just a short space of time you can already see the impact that Chris and his team have had with
improved performances bringing an upturn in results, meaning that we face another tough assignment, one that we will undoubtedly rise to. Alongside Chris is another coach that I’ve had the pleasure of sharing a dugout with in Matty Vernon, alongside them is Jordy as well. Three good coaches and decent lads who we look forward to sharing a beer with after what we hope will be another 3-points. Last week we made the trip to Aylestone Park where we were beaten 2-1 despite putting in another good performance on the road. With a bit of luck, the result could have been so different as twice we struck the woodwork. Unfortunately, we spent 10 minutes of the second period down to ninemen as we had two players sent to the sin-bin for dissent. No matter how frustrated we become we must find a way to control our discipline. Unbelievably today's game represent the final game in the month of November which leads us into an extremely busy December where this season we have a Home game on Boxing Day with Easington Sports the visitors. It would be great to see the Sett bursting at the seams that day. Lots of you will have family visiting so why not bring them too! Last night we were able to watch our Under 18’s Black take on Northampton Town’s Academy in the County Cup. It was a great occasion as we secured a fantastic 1-1 draw before going on to win on penalties! An amazing achievement by all involved however special mention to Billy Panter who saved a penalty in normal time which coupled with an unbelievable save in injury time took the game to penalties where he went on to save another 4. He even had time to miss a penalty himself…. what a night! Good luck to our sides over the weekend. Thank you for your support, enjoy the game and we look forward to seeing you again next Saturday when we make the trip to Rugby Borough.

OUR HISTORY
Formed in 1929, Bugbrooke St. Michael’s Football Club took over from Bugbrooke United who folded in 1928 after being in existence since 1910. The club, which is named after the local St. Michael’s and All Angels Church, initially took its place in the Northants Central Village League and had immediate success, winning the league title from 1931 to 1937. The club closed for the Second World War before reforming in 1947 and were once again successful winning the CVL title from 1947 to 1950 and were Northants Lower Junior Cup runners-up in 1949, a feat repeated in 1954. We finally won the N.F.A. Lower Junior Cup in 1956 and followed this in 1957 by winning the prestigious Daventry Charity Cup. The club had its most successful years from 1966 to 1972 when we won the Northants Central Combination Premier title and again from 1976 to 1979 with 1977 also seeing us win the N.F.A. Lower Junior Cup again. The club continued to succeed in the Northants Combination until 1987 when the we took the decision to join the United Counties League.
At this time, we decided to run two teams in the U.C.L. and two teams in the C.N.C. We also began our youth section and have continued this ever since. Today we run 4 adult sides, including a recently formed Ladies team as well as 15 youth teams. The club has had continued to enjoy success across all age groups over those 30 years, the most notable being N.F.A. Junior Cup winners in 1992, N.F.A Lower Junior Cup in 1993 and U.C.L. Division One winners in 2001. The reputation for producing successful youth teams has increased over those years and 4 of our youth players (under 16) have been signed by professional league clubs. The achievements of the club on the field have always been supported by a hardworking committee whose chief officers are recorded on a roll in the clubhouse foyer. They along with supporters of the club have built up the excellent changing rooms and clubhouse since 1980. We hope that you enjoy the facilities that they have provided over those years, and we look forward to seeing you again in the future

PROTECT THE GAME.’ A message from Bugbrooke St Michaels Football Club about antisocial and criminal behaviour As we commence the new season we want to make you aware of new measures being taken across all of football, and the NLS, to ensure everyone can have a safe and enjoyable experience. We are supporting strong action from the FA, and across the NLS to tackle antisocial and criminal behaviours that put all of us at risk. Please remember the following activities are illegal, dangerous, have serious consequences and have no place in our game: • Carrying or using smoke bombs or pyros • Invading the pitch or entering the pitch without permission
For everyone’s safety, we will report anyone carrying out these offences to the police, which can result in a criminal record. Anyone who enters the pitch without permission and those carrying or using smoke bombs or pyros will now receive an automatic club ban. These measures could also now apply to the parents or guardians of children involved in these activities. This reflects the seriousness of the risks to fans and staff – pyros can burn at 2000 degrees Celsius and cause life changing injuries, while entering the pitch endangers players, managers and match officials. It also impacts the hard working volunteers, who ensure that our special part of the game continues to run.

The club was formed in 1904 as Histon Institute FC and played for 44 years in the Cambridgeshire Football League. John Chivers, chairman of major Histon employer Chivers & Sons, helped to found the football club. The company donated a field then covered in roses for the club to play on, which is commemorated in the rose on Histon’s crest. From 1926 the club moved to its current location, where a grandstand was erected in 1934.
In 1948 the club became champions of the Cambs League and joined the Spartan League, winning promotion to its Premier Division in 1951. The “Institute” was dropped from the club’s name that season. The top forward in those days was Mo Thurston, who scored 63 goals in season 1949-50. In 1960 Histon entered the Delphian League, which became part of the Athenian League structure in 1963 but struggled at that level. The pitch was re-sited at right angles to the old one in 1960-61, and a replacement stand opened in 1964-65. In 1965 Histon switched to the Eastern Counties League, where they were to play for the next 35 years. When the ECL adopted a two-division format in 1988, Histon were placed in the Premier Division. In the 1989–90 season, with Alan Doyle as manager, Histon won the ECL League Cup and sold players Lance Key and Shaun Sowden to Sheffield Wednesday and Giuliano Maiorana to Manchester United. The transfer fee rescued the club financially, and a Manchester United team played Histon on 19 May 1989.
Following administrative and financial difficulties in 1993, the club was relegated to ECL Division One in 1995 but were promoted back to the Premier Division two years later. The 1997–98 season saw Neil Kennedy establish a club record by scoring 46 senior goals in the season, and Histon finished 3rd. Finally in the 1999–2000 season Histon won the ECL Premier Division title under the management of former Cambridge United player Steve Fallon, appointed on 27 July 1999, and were promoted to the Southern League Eastern Division. In the first three Southern League seasons Histon managed 4th spot twice and then a disappointing 10th, which momentarily halted the rise in fortunes experienced under Steve Fallon, but the 2003–04 season saw the club finish 2nd in the Eastern Division to claim promotion to the Premier Division. The following year Histon took on League Two side Shrewsbury Town in the FA Cup 1st Round Proper, setting up a 2nd Round tie at home to Yeovil Town with a 2–0 victory. They lost to Yeovil, but clinched the Southern League Premier Division title on the last day of the 2004-05 season and were promoted to the Conference South. In their first Conference South season Histon finished 5th, enough to secure a place in the play-offs for promotion to the Conference National. They won their first play-off game away at Farnborough Town 3–0, but lost 2–0 in the final against St. Albans City. In the FA Cup they reached the second round proper. The team managed a draw away at Nuneaton Borough but were defeated in the replay at Bridge Road 2–1 before a crowd of 3,077. The season was also notable for a 5– 0 win against local rivals Cambridge United in the FA Trophy. On 14 April 2007 Histon, now popularly known as the Stutes, beat Welling United 1–0 at Bridge Road to go 19 points clear at the top of the Conference South in the final table. Two days previously, officials from the Conference had passed Bridge Road as fit for Conference National football, paving the way for promotion (the club’s fourth in 7 years) to the highest point in the non league pyramid. In the same season striker Neil Kennedy scored his 300th goal for the club with a hattrick against Havant & Waterlooville.
Histon’s 2007-08 season in the Conference National saw the Stutes play their first televised game, Setanta broadcasting the 1–0 home win against Oxford United. Later that season the club broke their record home attendance when a crowd of 3,721 saw Histon beat Cambridge United 1–0 on 1 January 2008. Histon finished the season 7th. The club’s record goal scorer, Neil Kennedy, played his last competitive game against Forest Green Rovers on the last day of the season in a substitute appearance. The second season of Conference National football saw the Stutes finish third, qualifying for the play-offs, where they were defeated 2–1 on aggregate by Torquay United in the semifinal. In the FA Cup Histon reached the third round, losing 2-1 at home to Championship side Swansea City, after beating League One opposition in Swindon Town 1–0 at home in the first round, and Leeds United 1–0 at home in the second round, the first time Leeds had lost to a non-league side. The Leeds United match was on national television, the attendance was 4,103, and the winning goal was scored by Matt Langston.
Histon’s fortunes declined after the high spots of the 2008-09 season, as the money ran out. In November 2009 Gareth Baldwin ended his 17-year tenure as chairman of the club, and in January 2010 Steve Fallon’s highly successful ten years as Histon manager came to an end. The club finished 18th in the Conference National in season 2009/10 and bottom in 2010/11. Alan Lewer, John Beck, and David Livermore served successively as managers.
Histon finished their first Conference North season in 16th place and David Livermore left the club at the end of that season. Dennis Greene took over but left the Club in December 2012, to be replaced by former player Nacer Relizani assisted by the club’s youth team coach Brian Page. The duo led the team to Conference North safety on the last day of the 2012/13 season before Relizani stepped down and Page took over the top job. Histon were now playing with a very young side largely drawn from the club’s youth structure. The 2013/14 season saw them relegated from the Conference North to the Southern Premier League. Brian Page kept them at that level in season 2014/15, securing an 18th place finish, but even the return of Steve Fallon in October 2015 could not prevent further relegation to the Southern League Division 1 Central at the end of season 2015-16. In October 2016 Fallon became Director of Football, with Lance Key returning to the club (again) this time as manager. Season 2016/17 however saw yet another relegation, back to the Eastern Counties League where it all started in the 1990’s. After a season of adjustment in 2017-18 at the end of which the team finished 6th in the Eastern Counties League Premier Division, 2018-19 saw the club heading in the right direction again as Key lead the side to promotion claiming the league title with an impressive 14-point margin. On returning to Step 4, the club was unexpectedly allocated a place in the Isthmian League for the first time in its’ 115-year history. After spending much of the 2019/20 season in the top half of the league’s North division, a mid-table finish looked to be on the cards before the season was curtailed due to the Coronavirus pandemic. The end of the season also saw the club Chairman John Hall step down after four years in which the focus had been upon restoring community links, simplifying the ownership structure, repaying debts, cutting costs and introducing ladies teams. Under John’s leadership, youth development continued to feature high on the club’s priorities list with a clear pathway from Academy through Scholarship and into the First Team for our young players. Existing Board member Richard Barlow succeeded John Hall as Chairman in the summer of 2020 and is looking to continue the progress made in recent years with a view to repositioning the club within the local community and bringing the highest level of football the club can successfully sustain to Bridge Road.

HISTON Goalkeepers Sam ROACH Originally part of the academy at Bridge Road as a youngster, he joined the pro-ranks after being snapped up by Leyton Orient and was called up by England U16s in 2014 for a two-day training camp. He came back to The Bridge on loan for the latter part of the 2016/17 season before joining Mildenhall Town on a permanent deal ahead of the 2017/18 season. In December of 2017 he rejoined us on loan again before making the move permanent in January 2018 since when he has become the regular first choice between the sticks. Chris GOUGH Joined the club in October 2021 on dual registration with Cambridge University press FC, making his debut in the FA Trophy at Corby Town that month and providing ‘keeper cover and competition for Roach’s Number 1 shirt.
Defence Miles SMITH Returned to the club in August after most recently being on the books at Mildenhall Town. During his previous spells with the Stutes, Miles accumulated 41 appearances, mainly during our time in the Southern League. He is an accomplished and experienced full back who is solid in the tackle and comfortable on the ball. Jake KERINS Experienced 24-year-old defender who was manager Chris Nunn’s vice-captain at AFC Rushden & Diamonds before signing for the Stutes. Jake started his career with Mildenhall Town and after a spell with Bury Town moved to Kings Lynn Town where he played in the Southern League Premier Division Central. Has also appeared for St. Neots Town, Biggleswade Town and Kempston Rovers. Oliver BROOKES Centre half who joined us in October 2020 from Great Shelford having previously played at Ely City and Fulbourn amongst others. A full-time PE Teacher, he has worked overseas in recent years with his last appointment in Russia in 2019/20. A strong and powerful presence at the heart of the defence he has proved himself an important signing, so much so that he was given the captain’s armband ahead of the 2022/23 season. Sam COLLISON Right-sided defender who was a new addition to the squad for 2021/22. Having been with neighbours Cambridge City and captaining their U18s side in 2019/20, he gained some first team experience with Fulbourn in 2020/21 before moving to Bridge Road in July 2021. Pat BEXFIELD Pat “came home” to Bridge Road in October 2021 having left us at the end of the 2019/20 season to concentrate on building his personal training business. With over 150 appearances in a Histon shirt, Pat’s versatility has seen him play in numerous positions for us whether that is anywhere across the back four or in midfield. His return brought experience, strength and determination to the squad and everyone at the club was delighted to see him back at The Bridge.
Max YORK Hugely experienced and influential defender who has played over 250 games for the club. He moved on to join Newmarket Town for the 2021/22 season after we were moved into the Northern Premier League but rejoined in January 2022 after a spell with Eynesbury Rovers. Max was club captain for some years and lead the club to the Eastern Counties League Premier Division Championship in 2018/19, scoring a remarkable 27 goals in the process which isn’t too bad for a centre half! Rob RUDDY An experienced defender with a “never say die” attitude that rubs off onto those around him. Rob first signed for the club from Mildenhall Town during the 2017/18 season. He left the club two years later and had a spell with Godmanchester Rovers before joining the Stutes for a second time at the start of the 2023/24 campaign.
Midfield Babacar CAMARA French midfielder who joined us from Godmanchester Rovers in August 2021. Deployed centrally, Bubba is as comfortable in a defensive midfield role as he is pushing further forward with a range of defence splitting passes and defensive steel that makes him an important member of the squad. Luke CRISP A strong and commanding centre back or defensive midfielder who joined us from Eastern Counties League Premier side Ely City during the summer of 2022. Luke made 33 appearances for the Robins during their 2021/22 campaign. He started his career playing for Fulbourn Institute before switching to Ely City in 2019.
Ryan TOWNER An experienced midfielder who joined us on dual registration from Royston Town in October 2021 and who made an immediate impact. Other than Royston, Ryan has also played for neighbours Cambridge City. Ryan was voted the Supporters Player of the Year for the 2022/23 season and has captained the side during the current campaign. Joe SUTTON A creative midfielder who graduated through the Histon scholarship programme and made his Histon debut as a 17-year-old back in 2016. Now aged 24, Joe rejoined us in October 2023 season after a five-year absence during which he played for St Neots Town, Rushden & Diamonds and most recently Daventry Town. Harvey BULLINARIA A box-to-box midfielder who has also put in some fine appearances as a right back. Joined the club for the start of the 2023/24 season after returning to the area from University. Harvey has also represented Ely City but is now looking to make an impact in the United Counties League with the Stutes. Lene BURDEN A 19-year-old who initially came through the Academy at Premier League side Arsenal where he spent eight years before moving on in the summer of 2021 to join the under 18s set-up at Bristol Rovers. He had two loan spells last season in the Southern Premier South, including one with Harrow Borough where he appeared in the side that knocked Hayes and Yeading out of the FA Trophy. The West London side consequently signed the youngster who will remain on their books while gaining valuable experience at Histon.
Forwards Marcus COLE Exciting young striker who joined us here at The Bridge ahead of the 2021/22 season after impressing in a number of preseason games. Pacey and with an eye for goal, he scored his first goal for the club against Ely City in January 2022 before going on to be a regular in the side during the 2022/23 season. Connor BARNES A lively striker who was signed on a dual registration from Cambridge City in November 2022. Connor scored a hattrick against the Stutes in a pre-season friendly and continued his scoring habit on his Histon debut against Long Buckby. Had made ten appearances for the Lillywhites in the 2022/23 season before switching to the Stutes where he became an established First team regular. Ed ROLPH The powerful striker who originally joined the club from Sawston United in July 2017, since when he has regularly been the club’s top goal-scorer. After sitting out most of the 2022/23 season, he rejoined the club in the Summer and will be looking to reach 200 appearances for the club by the end of the 2022/23 campaign. Danny GOULD Versatile and comfortable playing wide on either side of the pitch. Danny graduated from the Histon Scholarship in 2016 and swiftly became a first team regular and fans favourite. Joining Grays Athletic for the start of 2020/21 season but was back at Histon by December 2021. Missed the 2022/23 season due to injury but now back to his best. Jim BURNSIDE One of Chris Nunn’s first signings after being appointed Histon manager. The 31-year-old striker joined us after a short spell as a player/coach at Leighton. Jim played for Newport Pagnell Town until the end of the 2012/22 season with his last appearance coming at Wembley Stadium in the FA Vase Final. Scored on his full debut for Histon at March Town United in October this year.

” Football in the Protectorate” At the end of the Second World War, with much of Germany reduced to rubble and global politics shaping continental Europe in ways that would define the second half of the twentieth century, football was a minor concern. But, amongst the chaos and the disorganisation, with the former Reich being carved up amongst the victorious allied powers, was the odd case of Saarland. While East Germany fell under Soviet control, and West Germany was divided between Britain, France, and the United States, the Saar stood out. West of Kaiserslauten, right on the French border, and under French control until 1935, it had been a bit of an early refuge from Nazi terror before the war, and once again fell under French control, with the aim of detaching it from the German state. For sport, this was complicated. Saarland competed as an independent state in the 1952 Olympics, and in qualification for the 1954 World Cup (where they lost out on a place to eventual champions West Germany). Domestic football was cut off from Germany as well, having its own incredibly weak, largely propagandised puppet league set up. But local giants Saarbrucken had competed at the top of the German game right up until 1943 (when they subsumed into the military) and had won the postwar regional league in 1946. When the Saarland Ehrenliga was set up in 1948, they were too strong and instead placed in the French second division. There is some confusion as to what happened next. Most reports say they competed for the French Second Division title, but UEFA’s official account is a little different. While Saarbrucken would indeed spend the following season playing French teams, they were unable to collect points and were essentially playing a series of competitive friendlies. What isn’t in doubt is the quality of the former German side. Whether or not they were awarded points, they racked up enough wins to have won the league at a canter, much to the annoyance of their French counterparts who, understandably, didn’t enjoy being beaten by what they saw as a German team, so soon after the German occupation of France had ended.
With such dominance, it was only natural for Saarbrucken to apply to join the French First Division, with the support of French Football Federation President Jules RImet, but there were some obvious problems. The anti-German sentiment was stronger in France than anywhere else west of the Iron Curtain, and nobody wanted to reward them for success with a promotion. Strasbourg who had been forced to play in the German league under the Nazi occupation, were vehemently opposed to Saarbrucken in the same league as them. Additionally, nobody in France wanted to run the risk of German champions in their own league. The application was denied, and Saarbrucken withdrew from the French league altogether. Rimet resigned. Instead, Saarbrucken embarked on a series of friendly games, including setting up the Saarland International Cup in 1949. Seen by some as a precursor to the European Cup that would follow a few years later, the first edition included teams from all around central Europe, and several French teams. Saarbrucken won the competition, seeing off French side Rennes in the final, but interest in the cup diminished in the second season. Jules Rimet’s Red Star, the small Parisian side, joined the 23-team competition, but it was made up mostly of German sides. This would prove a sign of things to come, and the cup was never completed as it was agreed that Saarland’s football system would be reintegrated into West Germany’s in 1952. Which should, really, have brought an end to the curious case of Saarbrucken. Back in the German leagues, and with Saarland increasingly pushing toward rejoining West Germany politically as well as in footballing terms. But the Saar wouldn’t achieve that goal until 1957, after rejecting an offer of complete independence. That meant, as an independent protectorate with its own UEFA membership, there was still time for Saarbrucken to sneak into the first ever European Cup.
Travelling to an impressive Milan side in the first round, a Milan side containing superstars like Gunnar Nordahl and Nils Liedholm, nobody gave Saarbrucken any chance at all. Not that the Saarlanders were overawed by their illustrious opponents. They took the lead after five minutes, before Milan got into their rhythm and scored three before half-time. But Saarbrucken responded like a freight train, scoring three of their own to take a 43 lead back to West Germany. Beating Milan a second time would prove a step too far, however, and they lost the second leg 4-1, ending their brief time in the European sun.
Saarbrucken reached the national final on their return to the German football system, losing to Stuttgart, and continued to be a strong presence in their regional league. Upon the creation of the Bundesliga in 1963, they were included; albeit controversially. They finished bottom and spent the next 30 years bouncing between the divisions, before finally slipping into the fourth tier in 2006. But they will always have France, and Milan, and a curious chapter in the story of postwar football.
