WELCOME TO THE SETT From the Chairman … As Chairman of Bugbrooke St Michael’s Football Club I would like to offer you a warm welcome to The Sett and hope that you have an enjoyable visit. Here at Bugbrooke St Michaels we are working hard to develop a club with a strong inclusive ethos, offering opportunities for players of all ages and abilities. We are extremely proud of our youth development programme, supporting players from seven all the way up to eighteen. Many of our young players go on to have success with one of adult teams, with some players going on to even bigger and better things! There is a great wealth of local support for the club, everyone that helps does so on a voluntary basis and through everyone’s hard work and dedication we have been able to achieve and maintain FA Accredited status.
Whilst some clubs choose to reinvest their revenue into players wages, here at Bugbrooke we hold a different set of values. All of our profits go into upgrading our equipment and facilities, building a solid future-proof foundation that will be here for future generations to enjoy. Whilst this can sometimes hold us back from gaining huge success on the pitch, we feel our excellent facilities, youth development programme and ethos on community set us apart from other clubs. Success and progression starts from the beginnings. Thank you for your support today, we hope that you enjoy the game, and we look forward to seeing you again soon.
Kev Kevin Gardner, Chairman
Bugbrooke St Michaels Football Club would like to place on record our thanks to our team of volunteers, our advertisers and sponsors.

MANAGERS NOTES We’d like to extend a warm welcome to the players, officials and supporters of Yaxley who are the visitors to the Sett for todays United Counties Premier Division South fixture. We go into today’s game on the back of a 10day break following last weeks postponement against Eynesbury Rovers. Unfortunately, and despite best endeavors, the overnight rain that continued throughout the day left the pitch in an unplayable condition. Extremely frustrating for all, especially ourselves as we were going into the game high on confidence following recent performances and the mid-week win against Coventry United. It is what it is, we can only control the controllables and having a week off does have its benefits as it provides those players with injuries or niggles additional time to rest up and recuperate. As we move into the winter months having as many players available as possible is always a bonus. Yaxley had no such problem last week, their home ground has a 3G pitch and as such the weather wasn’t an issue. They played host to the divisions form team, Daventry Town and recorded an excellent 3-2 win. A result that consolidates their position just outside of the play off places. With today’s game being the return fixture, we have a good idea what to expect from our opponents. We travelled to Yaxley back in September and in a topsy turvey affair the hosts overturned a 3-2 half time deficit to run out 4-3 winners. Hopefully, today’s game is another thriller albeit with a different outcome! Before signing off we would like to pass on our best wishes to AFC Hackleton who take on CFA Sunday in Round 2 of the FA Sunday Cup tomorrow. Managed by our own Dan Porter there will be lots of Badgers on display in a tie that will be played at the Sett, 1pm kick off, a large crowd is expected! Thank you for your support, enjoy the game and we look forward to seeing you again next Saturday when we make the trip to Leicestershire to take on Aylestone Park.
Dale & Daniel
“As we move into the winter months having as many players available as possible is always a bonus.”
OUR HISTORY
Formed in 1929, Bugbrooke St. Michael’s Football Club took over from Bugbrooke United who folded in 1928 after being in existence since 1910. The club, which is named after the local St. Michael’s and All Angels Church, initially took its place in the Northants Central Village League and had immediate success, winning the league title from 1931 to 1937. The club closed for the Second World War before reforming in 1947 and were once again successful winning the CVL title from 1947 to 1950 and were Northants Lower Junior Cup runners-up in 1949, a feat repeated in 1954. We finally won the N.F.A. Lower Junior Cup in 1956 and followed this in 1957 by winning the prestigious Daventry Charity Cup. The club had its most successful years from 1966 to 1972 when we won the Northants Central Combination Premier title and again from 1976 to 1979 with 1977 also seeing us win the N.F.A. Lower Junior Cup again. The club continued to succeed in the Northants Combination until 1987 when the we took the decision to join the United Counties League.
At this time, we decided to run two teams in the U.C.L. and two teams in the C.N.C. We also began our youth section and have continued this ever since. Today we run 4 adult sides, including a recently formed Ladies team as well as 15 youth teams. The club has had continued to enjoy success across all age groups over those 30 years, the most notable being N.F.A. Junior Cup winners in 1992, N.F.A Lower Junior Cup in 1993 and U.C.L. Division One winners in 2001. The reputation for producing successful youth teams has increased over those years and 4 of our youth players (under 16) have been signed by professional league clubs. The achievements of the club on the field have always been supported by a hardworking committee whose chief officers are recorded on a roll in the clubhouse foyer. They along with supporters of the club have built up the excellent changing rooms and clubhouse since 1980. We hope that you enjoy the facilities that they have provided over those years, and we look forward to seeing you again in the future
‘LOVE FOOTBALL. PROTECT THE GAME.’ A message from Bugbrooke St Michaels Football Club about antisocial and criminal behaviour As we commence the new season we want to make you aware of new measures being taken across all of football, and the NLS, to ensure everyone can have a safe and enjoyable experience. We are supporting strong action from the FA, and across the NLS to tackle antisocial and criminal behaviours that put all of us at risk. Please remember the following activities are illegal, dangerous, have serious consequences and have no place in our game: • Carrying or using smoke bombs or pyros • Invading the pitch or entering the pitch without permission
For everyone’s safety, we will report anyone carrying out these offences to the police, which can result in a criminal record. Anyone who enters the pitch without permission and those carrying or using smoke bombs or pyros will now receive an automatic club ban. These measures could also now apply to the parents or guardians of children involved in these activities. This reflects the seriousness of the risks to fans and staff – pyros can burn at 2000 degrees Celsius and cause life changing injuries, while entering the pitch endangers players, managers and match officials. It also impacts the hard working volunteers, who ensure that our special part of the game continues to run.
• Drug use within the football ground
We know those who commit these illegal acts do not represent the majority of supporters. Please work with us to call out the risks.
• Discriminatory behaviour

The club was formed in 1900 with the forerunner of today’s club, Yaxley Rovers, being members of the first Peterborough League campaign contested during the 1902-03 season. History up until the Second World War is not well documented and the first instance of a post-war championship came about in 1950-51 when the club won the Peterborough League Division Two. Relegation was just around the corner though, and it was back in Division Three by the end of the 1950s. The Club has always played either in or on the fringes of the highest levels of local leagues which, over the years have been sponsored and known by many names such as Eastern Counties, Jewson, and Peterborough League. The Cuckoo’s finished as runners-up three seasons in a row, the last of these being enough to see the club promoted to the Premier Division of the Peterborough League. The club’s first taste of Premier Division football came at the start of the 1975-76 season and once again they finished runners-up. The following season they went one better and won the Premier Division title. The 1983-84 season was a superb one with the first team winning the treble, the Peterborough Premier Division, the Peterborough Senior Cup and the Hunts Senior Cup, and the Reserves winning the Peterborough Division One Championship. The Cuckoos left the Peterborough League at the end of the 1987-88 season and made the step up to the Eastern League at the start of the following season.
1993-94 saw the purchase of the new ground and the facilities to step up to the United Counties League and the 1994-95 season was at that time, probably the most successful in its history. This was the debut season of the ill-fated West Anglian League (amalgamation of the Hunts & East Northants Leagues) and the first team won promotion to the United Counties League after winning the championship. The Reserves also won Division One of the same competition thus emulating the feat of 1984-85. During the close season floodlights were erected and a stand was put up at the Leading Drove ground. The following season saw the Division One championship come to Leading Drove. The 2002-03 season saw the Reserve and Youth teams win the lion’s share of league and cup silverware whilst Jim Watson took over the management of the first team making a magnificent charge from the relegation zone of the United Counties League Premiership to finish seventh with 67 points – the club’s highest ever finishing position. The same season saw plans unveiled for new facilities that were part of a five-year objective to take the club into the Dr. Martens (or equivalent) League. Plans were also made to incorporate Yaxley Juniors and establish a new Ladies team to assist in creating a community orientated football club. The ’03-04, ‘04-05 and ‘05-06 seasons have to date been undoubtedly been the clubs most successful ever with the First, Reserve, Youth, Ladies and Junior teams all bringing home trophies including at senior level, the prestigious Hinchingbrooke Cup and the UCL League Cup in May 2006.
2013-14 saw the dismantling of the Reserve Side due to a lack of bodies to manage the team to an acceptable level and a brand new U18s team coming up from U16s football – a very tough season ahead. The First Team finished sixth in the league table—a highly commendable result but the FA and League Cup competitions were massively disappointing although we probably created a couple of new records in the process. 2014-15 saw the Cuckoos enjoy a very good season with an excellent FA Vase run and a fourth position in the league but one of the worst disciplinary records in the club’s history compounded by an embarrassing County Cup Final display to round off a poor run-in to the end. The surprise of the season was the “shock” departure of Brett Whaley to Wisbech Town having only days before presented his plan and budget for the 2015-16 to the clubs committee which was approved. 2015-16 A new brush and a new era with new manager Ian Benjamin, an ex-professional with massive experience in semi-pro and non-league and a track record of promotion at Step 4 and 5. The biggest change for the club was the new 3G pitch that the club and the community have already benefited from enormously. The club would like to place on public record its deep and sincere appreciation to all those silent partners who have made our dream for growth and sustainability a reality. Ian Benjamin resigned at the beginning of April and the position was filled by the return from Wisbech Town of Brett Whaley.
The club has maintained FA Charter Club status and was granted planning permission to redevelop the site, improving the facilities (e.g., new clubhouse and additional playing areas) to FA community standard. The project was severely delayed in 2005 resulting in significant commercial loses due to an access dispute halting the club’s entire development plan. The dispute was finally settled, and the project restarted in August ’06.
2016-17 Brett Whaley showed his intent to take the Cuckoos to a higher level of football by strengthening the squad with some impressive experience whilst retaining the vast majority of last season’s players. Brett brought back players and a great coaching team. In addition to an impressive third place in the league we also won the UCL KO Cup beating Wisbech Town in a fiercely contested battle.
Season 2008-09 saw the move to more temporary accommodation. The following three seasons proved to be some of the toughest in the club’s history as against the pundit’s opinions; Gary Clipston pulled survival from the jaws of relegation.
2017-18 saw our new Chairman Malcolm Clements officially set the clubs target for promotion and building on the success of last season, started what we all hoped was the next forward step for the Cuckoos. Our local attendances began to swell and also got behind our reformed Reserves. Assistant manager Andy Furnell took over the First Team management as Brett Whaley once again left the club. Furn’s led the club again to the league cup final (runners up) but more importantly to the league title and PROMOTION to the Evo-Stik SOUTHERN LEAGUE.
The 2012-13 season saw a total rebuild of the First Team and players under the management of former Cuckoos player and Reserve Team manager Brett Whaley (assisted by Chris Lenton) and the reinstatement of the clubs Reserve Team acting as a bridge between our flourishing U18s and First Team. They finished mid-table and were joint winners (along with Royston Town) of The Hinchingbrooke Cup, the reserve team were runners up in the league and the league cup and the U18s were league champions and league cup winners (comprehensively beating AFC Rushden & Diamonds). All in all, not a bad season.
2021-22 began another new chapter after the FA reshuffle saw the club moved laterally to the Northern Premier League Midlands Division, where we finished mid-table. 2022-23 was a season to forget as long-serving players moved on, Andy Furnell stepped down and other managerial appointments were unable to stop us from being relegated back to the UCL with just a single league win all season.
TODAYS VISITORS
YAXLEY 1: Conor Barton (GK) – Charismatic, lively and full of chat, great player to have between the sticks and is ALWAYS a voice on the pitch. 2: Ben Reynolds – Versatile Full back that can do a solid job in midfield. Deceptively quick and always gives everything. 3: Katiti Hakuria – Internationally capped footballer in his younger days. Full back is FULL of running and has the loudest whistle ever heard. 4: Jay Chilvers (Captain) – Solid centre back and as the Skip he leads by example. Quietly goes about his business, but certainly delivers on the pitch. Pleased to get him in as lots were looking at him. 5: Finlay Henderson – “Hendo” has played under Robbo since he was 14 years old – a couple of setbacks with Injury and illness, but is becoming a very good CB, Heads everything. Plus, a really nice lad off the pitch too and that is a great quality in a player. 6: Ben Arnold – Solid, strong, energetic Midfielder – Team DJ and one that will deffo be on the wind-up in the dressing room. 7: Rio Henson – Forward with Electric pace, with or without the ball. Very skilful and has an eye for goal, training at Step 2 pre-season so one to be good to keep. 8: Mark Baines – Mr Reliable – The most experienced player in the squad. Great vocally and is so good on the ball – really pleased to have him at Yaxley this season. 9: Ryley Barfoot-Nicholson – This Lad is unreal – should and WILL play higher. Looking forward to seeing him progress this season and beyond. 10: Matthew Harris-Hercules – Baller, song writer, singer and probably has more hidden talents not yet shared. Great instinctive goal scorer and another tricky player. 11: Fayed Rahman – Former Pro academy player – midfielder that can play anywhere and in any formation. Unselfish and a very clever player. 12: Seb Darnell – Central Midfielder that does not stop – Copper coloured top so could nickname him Duracell – he may hate that when he reads this.
14: Julinho Gomes – Ex Cambridge Utd Forward – an eye for goal – very quick and strong and will be a great one for the fans to follow. 15: Lil Francisco – Really talented Full Back – skilful, quick and LOVES the mirror. Fancies himself as a boxer, model, and celeb status is guaranteed (in his own mind anyway) 16: Samuel Brooks – Strong and experienced CB, good on the ball and doesn’t shirk a challenge. Another great lad to have around. 17: Jordan Venters – Quick and agile Centre Back that covers a lot of ground. Been injured pre-season so will come back into things soon.
18: Leo Brando – Probably the quickest in the team, lea sided player that will cause lots of problems – took last year out of football to concentrate on a career (and women) but once fully ready he will be a handful. 19: Kelton Stringer – Lucky to get his signature, and glad he joined amidst interest from other big clubs. A real presence in the centre of midfield and gets a fair few goals too. 20: Jez Goldson-Williams – “Experienced” striker that will certainly work a back four, always puts his body in and never gives up – apparently has great music taste – yet to be seen. 21: Dawid Kowalski (GK) – Last year at Yaxley and has again decided to stay on and battle for the number one spot, great shot stopper and will deffo push Conor for the shirt. 22: Loui Catt – Played under Robbo since he was 10 years old albeit a year out last season at Warboys. Fit, Strong, quick, scores goals and defends well. Catty is a great versatile additon to the group as he can play anywhere left or right. 23: Isaac Kyreme – Young Isaac has been thrust into step five following some good reviews aaer his /me in the lower leagues – he is a raw talent that we had to have involved. Only young but WILL be one to watch. 27: Sam Adams - THE fittest player in the team – will just keep running – very quick and has a great delivery too – very deceptive player and will be another that causes defences issues down the right. 30: Quincy Otunba (GK) – Experienced Goalkeeper that has moved to the village of Yaxley. Great hands, great distribution and will also be pushing for the number one spot.

” The Refugee who became a legend” Outside the impressive spectacle that is the Camp Nou there is a statue. It is dedicated to the player chosen, in 1999, as Barcelona’s greatest of the twentieth century. In full flight, with the ball at his feet, he looks ready to take a shot, one more that would no doubt nestle into the corner of the net. Obvious candidates leap out of the history books for this accolade. Diego Maradona, Johann Cruyff, Romario, Ronaldo. Some of the greatest players of all time, playing some of the most exciting football the world has ever seen. So, it is something of a surprise, then, that the player voted Barca’s greatest, is Laszlo Kubala. Kubala was one of a golden generation of players. Under different circumstances, he probably would have formed part of the Magical Magyars side that, statistically, is the greatest of all time. But the postwar politics of Eastern Europe were complicated. Kubala started his career at Ferencvaros, playing alongside the legendary Sandor Kocsis, but did not agree to the military service that was required of all Hungarian men. He fled to Czechoslovakia, then back to Hungary, before the Soviet Union occupied his country and he made a permanent exit. Agreeing a plan with his wife, he joined a group of refugees headed for Austria, and then made for Italy. Anna would swim across the Danube, with their infant son in tow, and join him later. In Italy, Kubala initially joined Serie A side Pro Patria, playing a handful of games but impressing fans with his trickery. Becoming a bit of a celebrity, he was invited to join the great Grande Torino side for a testimonial in Portugal. As he prepared to leave, however, Anna arrived, exhausted from her own escape, and Kubala turned down the invitation. The decision saved his life; on the return flight, Torino’s plane crashed into the Basilica di Superga. Everyone on board died. The other side of Kubala’s fame was that the Hungarian authorities finally discovered where he was. They demanded FIFA punish him, and FIFA obliged by banning him for a year. This allowed first Real Madrid, and then Barcelona to come calling for his signature.
How he ended up at the Blaugrana is disputed, but the most plausible story is that, when Kubala demanded that they also hire his boyhood coach, fellow refugee, and father-in-law Ferdinand Daucik as manager, Real Madrid refused, while their great rivals accepted his terms His ban ran through most of the 1950-51 season, and when it finally came to an end the league was already over. The cup remained, however, and Kubala got to work. In seven games, he scored six goals, and helped bring a trophy to Les Corts, Barcelona’s ground at the time. It was a telling introduction. In his first full season as a Barcelona player, Kubala played 19 games, and scored 26 goals. The Catalan side romped to the league title, but in a show of exceptional dominance also brought all three domestic cups home with them. The cherry on top was winning the Latin Cup, the forerunner to the European Cup. Five trophies, the Hungarian influence was undeniable. Kubala missed most of the following season with tuberculosis but was able to return in time for another league and cup double. Daucik was nomadic by nature, and with his impressive CV moved on to Athletic Club, where he won the cup twice, and then several other Spanish clubs over the next two decades. But Kubala stayed and continued building his legend. More than goals and trophies, Kubala ignited a footballing passion in the people of his adopted city. Thousands of extra fans started turning out to watch Kuksi in action, and he didn’t disappoint. Not just goals, but excitement was what he brought to the pitch. He was quick, agile, strong and tricky. Against Botafogo, with his shirt ripped from his body, he scored bare-chested. Helenio Herrera claimed Kubala was the first player to ever curl a free kick over a wall. Unsurprisingly, Les Corts was too small to hold all his adoring fans. In 1957, Barcelona had to move to the Camp Nou to accommodate them.
Despite Herrera’s admiration, the two did not get on when the Argentine arrived at Barcelona in 1958. He brought Sandor Kocsis, a more recent refugee, with him, and tried to impose a strict discipline. For the partying, drinking, womanising Kubala, this would not work. He was dropped to the bench, and the trophies dried up. Herrera was sacked in 1960. Kubala took his job. The Hungarian turned out to not be as successful in the dugout as he was on the pitch, but that probably had much to do with his love of playing.
He turned out sporadically for sides for another seven years, until he was forty, flipping between management and playing. But it didn’t matter in Barcelona, where he was already a legend. Of all the greats to have graced the Camp Nou, he may be the greatest.
Enjoy the game!
