WELCOME TO THE SETT From the Chairman … As Chairman of Bugbrooke St Michael’s Football Club I would like to offer you a warm welcome to The Sett and hope that you have an enjoyable visit. Here at Bugbrooke St Michaels we are working hard to develop a club with a strong inclusive ethos, offering opportunities for players of all ages and abilities. We are extremely proud of our youth development programme, supporting players from seven all the way up to eighteen. Many of our young players go on to have success with one of adult teams, with some players going on to even bigger and better things! There is a great wealth of local support for the club, everyone that helps does so on a voluntary basis and through everyone’s hard work and dedication we have been able to achieve and maintain FA Accredited status.

Whilst some clubs choose to reinvest their revenue into players wages, here at Bugbrooke we hold a different set of values. All of our profits go into upgrading our equipment and facilities, building a solid future-proof foundation that will be here for future generations to enjoy. Whilst this can sometimes hold us back from gaining huge success on the pitch, we feel our excellent facilities, youth development programme and ethos on community set us apart from other clubs. Success and progression starts from the beginnings. Thank you for your support today, we hope that you enjoy the game, and we look forward to seeing you again soon.

MANAGERS NOTES We’d like to extend a warm welcome to the players, officials and supporters of Daventry Town who are the visitors to the Sett for this evenings United Counties Premier Division South fixture. As the crow flies Daventry Town are our closest rivals meaning no introduction is needed, this despite us not having met for several years with Daventry having played at Step 4 until their relegation last season. Strong recruitment over the summer, most notably the signing of the prolific Leon Lobjoit meant that Daventry went into the campaign as one of the title favourites and despite an indifferent start to the season, they now find themselves on the cusp of the Play Offs having found their feet in recent weeks recording five wins in their last six fixtures, the most recent being an excellent 3-1 win against Newport Pagnell Town at the weekend With that in mind we know that we face another difficult task however with a noisy crowd under the lights at the Sett we hope we can turn in another strong performance and with it cause another upset. Looking at our own form we have picked up somewhat following what was arguably the lowest point of the season to date when we registered a 5-1 home reversal against Desborough Town. Since that day we have turned in some strong performances to pick up some pleasing results, none more so than the last time that we were here under the lights when we beat the then league leaders Newport Pagnell 4-0. On Saturday we had a break from league action as we travelled to Premier Division North side Lincoln United in Round 1 of the FA Vase. Against a strong opponent we caused them problems in the first half creating several presentable changes, we also had strong appeals for a penalty in the second half however our hosts proved too good on the day as they ran out 4-1 winners, Eddie Panter scoring a late consolation to continue his recent fine form. There was no disgrace in defeat and on the evidence of Saturday Lincoln United could go far in the competition – a top side on and off the pitch and despite the result we had a great coach journey home! Another positive from Saturday was the inclusion of young Christian Makekera and Andrian Ankrah, with both players included in the First Team squad following impressive performances in the Under 18s. We have already seen Billy Panter and Levon Stewart step up to the First Team this season, further highlighting the club’s commitment to providing young players with the opportunity. Away from the First Team there were disappointing cup exits for the Under 18s, Reserves and Ladies over the course of the last week, all of whom should be proud of their efforts. Thank you for your support, enjoy the game and we look forward to seeing you again on Saturday when we make the long trip to March Town United.

OUR HISTORY

Formed in 1929, Bugbrooke St. Michael’s Football Club took over from Bugbrooke United who folded in 1928 after being in existence since 1910. The club, which is named after the local St. Michael’s and All Angels Church, initially took its place in the Northants Central Village League and had immediate success, winning the league title from 1931 to 1937. The club closed for the Second World War before reforming in 1947 and were once again successful winning the CVL title from 1947 to 1950 and were Northants Lower Junior Cup runners-up in 1949, a feat repeated in 1954. We finally won the N.F.A. Lower Junior Cup in 1956 and followed this in 1957 by winning the prestigious Daventry Charity Cup. The club had its most successful years from 1966 to 1972 when we won the Northants Central Combination Premier title and again from 1976 to 1979 with 1977 also seeing us win the N.F.A. Lower Junior Cup again. The club continued to succeed in the Northants Combination until 1987 when the we took the decision to join the United Counties League.

At this time, we decided to run two teams in the U.C.L. and two teams in the C.N.C. We also began our youth section and have continued this ever since. Today we run 4 adult sides, including a recently formed Ladies team as well as 15 youth teams. The club has had continued to enjoy success across all age groups over those 30 years, the most notable being N.F.A. Junior Cup winners in 1992, N.F.A Lower Junior Cup in 1993 and U.C.L. Division One winners in 2001. The reputation for producing successful youth teams has increased over those years and 4 of our youth players (under 16) have been signed by professional league clubs. The achievements of the club on the field have always been supported by a hardworking committee whose chief officers are recorded on a roll in the clubhouse foyer. They along with supporters of the club have built up the excellent changing rooms and clubhouse since 1980. We hope that you enjoy the facilities that they have provided over those years, and we look forward to seeing you again in the future

PROTECT THE GAME.’ A message from Bugbrooke St Michaels Football Club about antisocial and criminal behaviour As we commence the new season we want to make you aware of new measures being taken across all of football, and the NLS, to ensure everyone can have a safe and enjoyable experience. We are supporting strong action from the FA, and across the NLS to tackle antisocial and criminal behaviours that put all of us at risk. Please remember the following activities are illegal, dangerous, have serious consequences and have no place in our game: • Carrying or using smoke bombs or pyros • Invading the pitch or entering the pitch without permission

For everyone’s safety, we will report anyone carrying out these offences to the police, which can result in a criminal record. Anyone who enters the pitch without permission and those carrying or using smoke bombs or pyros will now receive an automatic club ban. These measures could also now apply to the parents or guardians of children involved in these activities. This reflects the seriousness of the risks to fans and staff – pyros can burn at 2000 degrees Celsius and cause life changing injuries, while entering the pitch endangers players, managers and match officials. It also impacts the hard working volunteers, who ensure that our special part of the game continues to run.

Switching to the Northants Combination in 1987, under the guidance of Manager Willie Barrett, the club’s fortunes began to flourish, Barrett leading the club to successive championships in the Northants Combination First and Premier Divisions &in 1989/90 they secured promotion to the United Counties League Division One Leaving the “Hollow” in the centre of the town in 1990 when the club moved to its current home at the Elderstubbs, the club’s fortunes suffered a devastating blow in 2005–06, when the Elderstubbs clubhouse and changing rooms were destroyed during an arson attack. With the club on the brink of going out of business, Iain Humphrey took the helm and work began to revitalise the club with the introduction of new floodlights, walkways and other infrastructure to support the club's promotion ambitions. 2007–08 was a very successful season for the Town. They won UCL Division One, losing just once, and defeated three Premier division teams en route to the League Knockout Cup final, where they lost to Desborough Town 3–2.

In the season 2009–10, Daventry won promotion to the Southern League Division One Central, by becoming champions of the United Counties League under the guidance of manager Ady Fuller. Daventry Town reached the last 16 of the FA vase, the final of the NFA Senior Cup, beaten by Corby Town by 3 – 2 and the semi – finals of the UCL KO cup before Captain Paul Saunders lifted the UCL championship to secure Daventry Town a coveted place in the Southern League for 2010/11. Under the guidance of Ady Fuller and assistant Paul Lamb, their first season in the Southern League almost ended with another promotion however they lost in the play off final to Hitchin Town. Former Aston Villa, Charlton and Republic of Ireland international Mark Kinsella became manager in the summer 2011 however his season long spell was unsuccessful and former Daventry United/Ford Sports Manager Darran Foster was appointed with Neil Champelovier as his assistant in 2012. Daventry Town made history in 2013-2014 by reaching the First Round of the FA Cup, a visit to Chesterfield's Proact Stadium their reward. They were eventually beaten by 2 – 0 in front of over 700 of their own travelling supporters and a crowd of over 5269. Town also reached the first-round proper of the FA Trophy losing 1 0 to Maidenhead United. Town reached the final of the Northamptonshire Senior Cup Hillier Cup beating Cogenhoe United, managed by Andy Marks, 3 - 0, Scott Cross (2) and Luke Keen scoring the goals. Town had been season-long favourites for promotion from the Southern League Division One Central in 2013 -2014 but the back log of fixtures caused by the cup runs took effect. They lost the promotion play-offs at the semi-final stage at Kettering Town, narrowly beaten 1-0. Darran Foster resigned as manager on 30th October 2014 following budget cuts and was replaced by former Watford, Oldham and Preston star, Allan Smart. Former Manager Ady Fuller was appointed as his Assistant Manager with the bulk of the players supplied by Smart’s London based Academy. In the Summer of 2015, the club were moved to the Northern Premier League Division One South and with Smart and the players based in the South, het resigned in July 2015. Darran Foster returned to Daventry Town as Manager just nine months after leaving however he also resigned on Easter Saturday after a 5 0 home defeat to Kidsgrove Athletic. Club Goalkeeping Coach Derren Midson and the Club’s Juniors Development Officer Pete Flockhart stepped in as Caretaker Managers with Brian Porter returning as Club Secretary to ensure the club somehow completed their remaining 6 fixtures of the 2015/2016 season. In a move planned to reset the club’s financial problems, Town took voluntary relegation to step 6 football and the club returned to the United Counties League Division 1. In April 2016, Steve Tubb took over as Chairman and on the 12th May 2016, the club appointed Arron Parkinson and Andy Marks as joint managers.

With a zero budget for the season, the team management have worked wonders in turning the club around and winning the UCL Division 1 title, unbeaten at home. Andy Marks left the club at the end of the season due to family and work commitments. Ian King joined Parkinson as Joint Manager in May 2017. Town finished the 2017/18 season in 10th position, winning the Buckingham Charity Cup for the first time. 2018/19 saw the return of the Reserves managed by Andy Emery. Ian King left to join Northampton Town Academy. Arron Parkinson took over as Manager with goalkeeper Matt Finlay as his Assistant Manager and Pete Harris coming in a Club Coach respectively. After an excellent start to the 2018/19 league season and two FA Cup wins scoring 16 goals in the process, the Town went on to win the UCL Premier Division with a 1 1 draw at Pinchbeck United. The club were presented with the trophy on Easter Monday after a 3 0 win over local rivals and pre-season favourites Rugby Town in front of a crowd of 393. They also won the UCL Knock Out Cup by beating Holbeach United 3 1 in the final at Raunds Town. Town then returned to the BetVictor Southern League Division One Central. In 2019–20, the club returned to the Southern League, however, the Covid 19 Pandemic meant that they would not complete this or the 2020–21 season. Sadly, during this time, the Town lost three members of the Hobbs family in quick session. Club President, Frank Hobbs died just two weeks after his wife Sarah. Frank's younger brother, Malcolm Hobbs died just three months later. Between them, they had covered just about every position within the club and had given almost 200 years of combined service to the Town. In 2021–22, the club moved to the Northern Premier League Midlands Division. After a difficult start to the season, Jim Scott joined the coaching team and along with several new signings, Town ended the season in 16th place, but 15 points clear of the relegation spots. The club also started a third male adult team playing in the Northants Combination League Division 3. This team was named Daventry Town Hobbs after the sadly missed Hobbs family. Off the pitch, the club announced that it had cleared all inherited debts since taking over in 2016 and that the club was now debt free. The 2022-23 season was challenging for Daventry. A slow start in the tough Northern Premier League led to the budget being cut and manager Arron Parkinson walked away along with all players leaving a scratch side of reserves and youth team to unsuccessfully avoid relegation from the Northern Premier League.

Prior to the 2023-24 season Manager Daren Young was unveiled along with assistant Graeme Archer as the club looked forward to a return to the United Counties League Structure.

” The mysterious Manager who disappeared” When Charles O’Hagan turned up in Seville, it was quite a coup for the most successful club in Andalucia. Or so they thought. Here was a man who had played for an impressive Huddersfield side, as well as being part of an early Everton team that was making its mark in Liverpool. On top of that, he had won the FA Cup with Tottenham the season before joining Sevilla, so he brought a wealth of experience. Except, none of that was true. Charles O’Hagan did have a spell at Spurs, where he was impressive but never won the FA Cup. And he had signed for Everton, although he had never played a game. He was never on the books at Huddersfield. Like so much of the Irishman’s career, how these stories came about was a mystery. Charles O’Hagan can best be described as peripatetic. He began his career in his native Ireland, turning out for St Columb’s College and then Derry Athletic, before moving to Liverpool in 1903. When he signed for Everton, he was working at a Spanish grocers, and supplemented his income in the Toffees reserves. He only lasted a year though, before his taste for adventure got the better of him and he moved to London, signing for Tottenham. Here he first made his mark on English football. Spurs were at that time outside the Football League, but his form was impressive enough to be called up to the Ireland national side, along with his Tottenham teammate Jack Kirwan, with whom he formed a formidable strike partnership.

He earned the first of his 11 caps in March 1905, and scored the following month against Wales. Settled and scoring, it seemed he had made his home in North London. But he seemed to be unable to make a home anywhere. In 1906, he made the surprising move to the North-East, and signed with Middlesbrough. That move would fail to yield results, and he lasted just a matter of months before he was on the move again, even further north, this time to Aberdeen. Scotland would prove to be his most settled home, spending four years at Pittodrie, the longest spell of his career at any club, and the longest spell in which he stayed in one city. He once again found his form and started scoring goals, earning himself a recall to the Ireland national side, and forming a great bond with winger Willie Lennie. As his career ended, he had short stints at Greenock Morton at Third Lanark, before finally calling time on his playing days. Only 31 and having not suffered any significant injuries, it seemed a short career. But as with everything O’Hagan did, he forged his own way. Here, the Irishman disappears from the record, until the First World War when he was registered as Second Lieutenant of the Leinster Regiment, and then the Highland Light Infantry. He survived the conflict and disappeared again, before accusing his Aberdeen teammates of accepting bribes to throw a Scottish Cup game in 1915 and quickly withdrawing the claims. In 1920, he was given his first managerial role, at Norwich. The club was in turmoil, and he lasted only until January 1921 before resigning, having won just four out of 21 games. He once again disappeared, for over two years, before Sevilla made their dubious announcement.

In Spain, he became the first true ‘manager’ of Sevilla, the second oldest club in the country, and took charge of by far the most successful club in Andalucia. With the national league system still nearly a decade away, regional bragging rights were the goal, and Sevilla won 17 of 20 Andalucian titles. O’Hagan continued this proud heritage, winning the cup in 1924, his first season, before once again moving on. Sevilla fans suggested that his love of wine was incompatible with running a football club.

This time, the Irishman headed home. He settled in the Irish seaside town of Portrush, briefly, before accepting a generous offer to go and manage in Berlin. This would prove to be fatal to his football career, however. O’Hagan’s version was that he arrived in Germany and was quickly outcast for having fought for the British Army in the First World War. Within weeks he was asked to leave, making much of the journey under his own steam and returning to Ireland penniless. His little sojourn to Berlin would prove to be his last in football, as far as anyone can tell. In 1928, he set sail from Derry to New York, to begin a new life in the United States. There are some unconfirmed rumours that he became a journalist, though nothing has turned up with his name on it. One final time, he disappeared from the record. Enjoy the game!
