From the Chairman … As Chairman of Bugbrooke St Michael’s Football Club I would like to offer you a warm welcome to The Sett and hope that you have an enjoyable visit. Here at Bugbrooke St Michaels we are working hard to develop a club with a strong inclusive ethos, offering opportunities for players of all ages and abilities. We are extremely proud of our youth development programme, supporting players from seven all the way up to eighteen. Many of our young players go on to have success with one of four adult teams, with some players going on to even bigger and better things! There is a great wealth of local support for the club, everyone that helps does so on a voluntary basis and through everyone’s hard work and dedication we have been able to achieve and maintain FA Accredited status. Whilst some clubs choose to reinvest their revenue into players wages, here at Bugbrooke we hold a different set of values. All of our profits go into upgrading our equipment and facilities, building a solid future-proof foundation that will be here for future generations to enjoy. Whilst this can sometimes hold us back from gaining huge success on the pitch, we feel our excellent facilities, youth development programme and ethos on community set us apart from other clubs. Success and progression starts from the beginnings. Thank you for your support today, we hope that you enjoy the game, and we look forward to seeing you again soon.

MANAGERS NOTES

Good afternoon. We’d like to start today’s programme notes by extending a warm welcome to the players, officials and supporters of Coventry Sphinx who are the visitors to the Sett for today’s United Counties Premier Division South fixture. Looking at results and having watched them last season we are expecting another tough assignment this afternoon.

Unfortunately, injuries, illness and suspensions are putting a real strain on our squad this week however I am certain that those who do line-up will be up for the challenge. With a reduced schedule in November, we are hopeful that come December we will finally be at full strength which is when the real headaches will ensue. We are back at home today off the back of two away fixtures which have had mixed results. Firstly, we travelled to Eynesbury and picked up an excellent 4-3 win thanks to a brace from Eddie Panter and singles for Will Glennon and Will Jones. This was achieved despite having fallen two goals behind and having to play out the last 15 minutes with 10 men after Tom Smyth was dismissed for a push. Onto last weekend, we made the long trip to March Town United in the League Knock Out Cup, unfortunately we surrendered a 1-0 lead at the interval given to us courtesy of another goal for Eddie, eventually going down 3-1 to exit the Cup. Once again it was a day where chances weren’t converted, and this coupled with a few decisions that didn’t go our way meant that we were on the wrong end of the result. That sad, it is very encouraging that we are competing against these sides however we need to get more street wise after so many weeks of what ifs. As we’ve said it was always going to be a steep learning curve for a young group of players however now has to be the time that we grow up as individuals and collectively so that we can stop the what ifs. Finally, it’s great to see the Reserves putting a strong run of results together, leaving them sitting high in their league. They also have a League Cup Quarter Final at ON Chenecks to look forward to on Tuesday night, it’d be great to see lots of support for the team! As always thank you for your support, enjoy the game and we look forward to seeing you again when we make the trip to Long Buckby AFC on Saturday 19th November.

OUR HISTORY

Formed in 1929, Bugbrooke St. Michael’s Football Club took over from Bugbrooke United who folded in 1928 after being in existence since 1910. The club, which is named after the local St. Michael’s and All Angels Church, initially took its place in the Northants Central Village League and had immediate success, winning the league title from 1931 to 1937. The club closed for the Second World War before reforming in 1947 and were once again successful winning the CVL title from 1947 to 1950 and were Northants Lower Junior Cup runners-up in 1949, a feat repeated in 1954. We finally won the N.F.A. Lower Junior Cup in 1956 and followed this in 1957 by winning the prestigious Daventry Charity Cup. The club had its most successful years from 1966 to 1972 when we won the Northants Central Combination Premier title and again from 1976 to 1979 with 1977 also seeing us win the N.F.A. Lower Junior Cup again. The club continued to succeed in the Northants Combination until 1987 when the we took the decision to join the United Counties League.

At this time, we decided to run two teams in the U.C.L. and two teams in the C.N.C. We also began our youth section and have continued this ever since. Today we run 5 adult sides, including a recently formed Ladies team as well as 13 youth teams. The club has had continued to enjoy success across all age groups over those 30 years, the most notable being N.F.A. Junior Cup winners in 1992, N.F.A Lower Junior Cup in 1993 and U.C.L. Division One winners in 2001. The reputation for producing successful youth teams has increased over those years and 4 of our youth players (under 16) have been signed by professional league clubs. The achievements of the club on the field have always been supported by a hardworking committee whose chief officers are recorded on a roll in the clubhouse foyer. They along with supporters of the club have built up the excellent changing rooms and clubhouse since 1980. We hope that you enjoy the facilities that they have provided over those years, and we look forward to seeing you again in the future

The proud history of Coventry Sphinx began in 1946 when the name was changed to Sphinx FC from Armstrong Whitworth Aircraft, who had been highly successful in Coventry before and during the Second World War. In the 1950s and 1960s the club continued that success by winning a number of league and cup competitions. Sphinx played a major part in the formation of the Coventry Alliance and continued to win trophies throughout the following decades. The 1990s recession led to the closure of factories in the city and surrounding areas, which in turn meant the disbandment of many of Coventry’s football clubs. Sphinx, in need of a new challenge, joined the Midland Combination Football League in 1993. In our first season in the Midland Combination, we were promoted from Division 2 and reached the semi-finals of the Birmingham Sunday Vase. A second consecutive promotion followed thanks to a second-placed finish in Division 1 the next season. After rising to the top division of the Combination it was decided that the club should be linked more closely to the name of our city; Coventry Sphinx was born. The ground was named Sphinx Drive, a stand built at pitch side, and a Coventry City XI invited for the renamed club’s opening match.

In 1997 the junior section of the club was formed, starting with just three teams, and Sphinx became the first club in Coventry to achieve the FA Charter.

The junior section has grown considerably and there are now hundreds of players representing the club. In 2003 our juniors started competing in the Midland Floodlit Youth League. One of their biggest successes came in the 2014/15 season when they won a league and cup double. Coventry Sphinx completed a remarkable treble achievement in May 2007. In addition to finally becoming champions of the Midland Football Combination –achieving promotion to the Midland Football Alliance in the process –we won the Coventry Charity Cup and the BCFA Midland Floodlit Cup.

The 2007/08 season saw the Sphinx enjoy our best ever run in the FA Vase. We reached the quarter-finals for the very first time, losing to the eventual Wembley winners, Kirkham & Wesham (now AFC Fylde), in a replay at Sphinx Drive. We made it to the semi-finals of the League Cup in the same season and went on to win the Midland Alliance Polymac League Cup by beating Westfields in the final in 2009/10. It’s our biggest honour to date. Ahead of the 2021/22 season, the Sphinx first team made a sideways move as part of FA restructuring at Step 5, competing in a newly formed Premier Division South in the United Counties League. Football never stands still. Local football in Coventry has declined over the years, so to be playing on after more than seventy years is an achievement of which the players, officials and supporters of our club can be proud.

Having suffered an opening day league defeat against the same opposition the Badgers knew that they’d face a tough assignment against their high-flying hosts. Stand in Manager Daniel Powell rang the changes with Nash, Coulson, Jake Webster and King returning to the starting XI in what was a 4-3-3 formation. One notable absentee from the match day squad was Will Jones who it has been confirmed has suffered a broken bone in his foot which will result in a prolonged spell on the sidelines. In front of a vocal home crowd, it was the Badgers who took the game to their hosts, silencing the ‘Scaffold End’ in the process. The first chance of the game fell to the lively Eddie Panter who found himself bearing down on the advancing keeper, his driven effort from an angle was well saved with the hosts able to clear the danger. Minutes later an even better chance fell the Badgers way when a poor clearance fell to Trent Oakes who following good link up play with Panter, cut inside the last defender before sliding a low effort past

the advancing goalkeeper and agonisingly the wrong side of the post. As the half wore on March Town settled into the game creating chances of their own, Luke Reeve called upon on more than one occasion to keep the score level. As the interval approached the Badgers took a deserved lead as despite calls for offside Eddie Panter (42) ran clear and kept his cool to beat the keeper with a low shot that found the corner of the net, 1-0 and no more than the Badgers deserved for their first half performance. Arguably the moment that decided the tie came on 75 minutes when Eddie Panter wriggled free and having made his way into the penalty-area he went down under a challenge from behind. Initially a penalty was awarded however following a long consultation between the Referee and his Assistant the decision was overturned and much to the dismay of the Badgers a goal kick was the decision – the March Town player who committed the ‘foul’ was the last man and was already on a Yellow card. With the game now into the final 10 minutes the hosts took the lead for the first time, an angled free kick well finished by Emmington with the Badgers defence asleep, 1-2.

Having kept the Bugbrooke players waiting on the pitch for several minutes before re-appearing for the second half the hosts, roared on by the Scaffold End, flew out of the traps with the Badgers indebted to Luke Reeve who made a fantastic double save to preserve the lead.

With two minutes remaining the hosts sealed their passage into the last 16, frustrations set in with Walton lucky to avoid a Red Card, the resultant free kick (which was taken a good 20-yards from where the offence occurred) duly dispatched into the top corner of the net, 1-3.

Unfortunately, it was a lead that didn’t last long, the pressure eventually told, Jack Friend scoring the inevitable equaliser via a powerful volley that beat Reeve at his near post, possibly with the aid of a deflection, 1-1.

The final score could have been more had it not been for Luke Reeve making another excellent save in injury time, however that would have been harsh on the Badgers who more than played their part in what was a proper cup tie.

With both teams keen to avoid penalties the game became stretched with chances at both ends.

PROTECT THE GAME.’ A message from Bugbrooke St Michaels Football Club about antisocial and criminal behaviour As we commence the new season we want to make you aware of new measures being taken across all of football, and the NLS, to ensure everyone can have a safe and enjoyable experience. We are supporting strong action from the FA, and across the NLS to tackle antisocial and criminal behaviours that put all of us at risk. Please remember the following activities are illegal, dangerous, have serious consequences and have no place in our game: • Carrying or using smoke bombs or pyros • Invading the pitch or entering the pitch without permission

For everyone’s safety, we will report anyone carrying out these offences to the police, which can result in a criminal record. Anyone who enters the pitch without permission and those carrying or using smoke bombs or pyros will now receive an automatic club ban. These measures could also now apply to the parents or guardians of children involved in these activities. This reflects the seriousness of the risks to fans and staff – pyros can burn at 2000 degrees Celsius and cause life changing injuries, while entering the pitch endangers players, managers and match officials. It also impacts the hard working volunteers, who ensure that our special part of the game continues to run.

” When Michel Platini played for Kuwait” When we talk about the greatest players to have ever played the game, some names stand out. One of them, the Frenchman with three back-to-back Ballon d’Ors, who had led France to the European Championship in 1984 and Juventus to the European Cup in 1985, was Michel Platini. Now famous for his role in the administration of football for UEFA and FIFA, and allegedly for his involvement in corruption at the highest levels of the game, his ability was beyond doubt. His retirement from football in 1987 left a chasm in the French national team that arguably wouldn’t be filled until the emergence of Zinedine Zidane a decade later, so there was excitement when he decided to reverse that decision. Excitement turned to confusion, however, when he announced that he would be making his comeback not for France, but for Kuwait. Michel Platini’s stellar career almost stalled before it had even started, as the boyhood Metz fan, desperate to play for the club he supported, was scouted and went on trial in the eastern city. However, a breathing issue not only prompted the club to turn him down, but also led to the pronouncement that he would never make it as a top-level footballer. He returned home with his tail between his legs, but fortunately for the young Platini home was Nancy, where his father Aldo was a director, and Michel found a place in the reserves. He wouldn’t stay there for long. This was to be the move that made history for French football, and although unable to stop Nancy slipping into the second tier, he led them to an immediate return and then to a French cup title. A move to French giants Saint-Etienne followed, at the time the most successful club in the country, and a league title, before a quickly moving on to Italy, where Juventus lifted him to new heights, including that 1985 European Cup, along with myriad other trophies. It was also where he became the best player in Europe (as the Ballon d’Or rewarded at that time) and led France to their first ever trophy.

But after playing through injury at the World Cup in 1986 and suffering the heartbreak of a second successive semi-final defeat to West Germany (the first, in 1982, infamous for Harald Schumacher’s ‘tackle’ on Patrick Battiston) he decided it was time to bring that part of his career to an end. Early in 1987, he announced his retirement from the beautiful game, and that was that. While Platini was enchanting supporters in Europe, football in the Middle East was trying to find a voice. The United Arab Emirates had employed England manager Don Revie in 1977 on a lucrative contract, but it was Kuwait who dominated the nascent Gulf Cup, and it was Kuwait upon whom the hopes of enhancing the reputation of the region’s football were placed. Friendlies were arranged, and ten years after Revie made his infamous move, the Soviet Union were invited to the Emirate for a friendly that would hopefully increase the popularity of the game in the Middle East.

The Kuwaiti Emir, however, didn’t just invite guests from behind the iron curtain, and turned to recently retired, three-time Ballon d’Or winner Platini to join his team in an effort to make them competitive against the USSR. With a deal (and fees) agreed, Platini pulled on his boots one last time. The injuries that had begun to plague him by the end of his career meant that he was limited to just 21 minutes on the pitch, and in that time, he wasn’t able to contribute much of anything, as Kuwait went down to a 20 defeat. He went back home, and the entire episode was nearly forgotten. Platini’s post-playing career has obviously been notable for his closeness to Sepp Blatter, his administration of Europe and then the World’s governing bodies, and the investigations of corruption that have followed him around in recent years.

Kuwait’s future as a footballing powerhouse also never materialised and having won six of the first eight Gulf Cups, they have since been limited to four of the next sixteen. In a seven-team tournament, that’s not much to write home about. So, the brief alliance of Ballon d’Or winner and oil state didn’t work out brilliantly for either. But, at the very least, it provides a nice pub quiz question. Enjoy the game!
