From the Chairman … As Chairman of Bugbrooke St Michael’s Football Club I would like to offer you a warm welcome to The Sett and hope that you have an enjoyable visit. Here at Bugbrooke St Michaels we are working hard to develop a club with a strong inclusive ethos, offering opportunities for players of all ages and abilities. We are extremely proud of our youth development programme, supporting players from seven all the way up to eighteen. Many of our young players go on to have success with one of four adult teams, with some players going on to even bigger and better things! There is a great wealth of local support for the club, everyone that helps does so on a voluntary basis and through everyone’s hard work and dedication we have been able to achieve and maintain FA Accredited status. Whilst some clubs choose to reinvest their revenue into players wages, here at Bugbrooke we hold a different set of values. All of our profits go into upgrading our equipment and facilities, building a solid future-proof foundation that will be here for future generations to enjoy. Whilst this can sometimes hold us back from gaining huge success on the pitch, we feel our excellent facilities, youth development programme and ethos on community set us apart from other clubs. Success and progression starts from the beginnings. Thank you for your support today, we hope that you enjoy the game, and we look forward to seeing you again soon.

THE GAFFER’S NOTES We’d like to start today’s notes by extending a warm welcome to the players, officials and supporters of Long Buckby AFC who are today’s visitors to the Sett for our Emirates FA Cup tie. We’re writing these notes prior to our midweek trip to Cogenhoe where we know that we will

face another tough test against a well drilled ‘Biffa’ Carlin side. Fingers crossed for a positive result that will get our season up and running following Saturdays visit of March Town which was a funny game, it was certainly not one that we deserved to lose by 4 goals! After a fantastic start we conceded 2 soft goals following which we struggled to break down our opponents, finally conceding 2 late goals when chasing the game.
The lads were very disappointed after game but it’s important that we learn from our mistakes, remember that feeling and go again. We currently have a few players missing through holidays and injuries and perhaps the season has started a couple of weeks early for us. That said we won’t use that as an excuse as the lads who stepped in showed the potential that we can all see. We’re confident that with a bit of luck and a full squad to choose from, positive results will soon follow. Today’s game in FA cup is just the sort of occasion that we’ve all been looking forward to, a local derby which coupled with the ground improvements are a recipe for a fantastic spectacle. Finally good luck to Rob and the Reserves who kick off their season next Saturday. His side is taking shape nicely and we all hope they have a fantastic season. Anyway, thank you for your support, enjoy the game and we look forward to seeing you back at the Sett on Tuesday 23rd August when G.N.G Oadby Town are the visitors.

Formed in 1929, Bugbrooke St. Michael’s Football Club took over from Bugbrooke United who folded in 1928 after being in existence since 1910. The club, which is named after the local St. Michael’s and All Angels Church, initially took its place in the Northants Central Village League and had immediate success, winning the league title from 1931 to 1937. The club closed down for the Second World War before reforming in 1947 and were once again successful winning the CVL title from 1947 to 1950 and were Northants Lower Junior Cup runners-up in 1949, a feat repeated in 1954. We finally won the N.F.A. Lower Junior Cup in 1956 and followed this in 1957 by winning the prestigious Daventry Charity Cup. The club had its most successful years from 1966 to 1972 when we won the Northants Central Combination Premier title and again from 1976 to 1979 with 1977 also seeing us win the N.F.A. Lower Junior Cup again. The club continued to succeed in the Northants Combination until 1987 when the we took the decision to join the United Counties League.
At this time, we decided to run two teams in the U.C.L. and two teams in the C.N.C. We also began our youth section and have continued this ever since. Today we run 5 adult sides, including a recently formed Ladies team as well as 13 youth teams. The club has had continued to enjoy success across all age groups over those 30 years, the most notable being N.F.A. Junior Cup winners in 1992, N.F.A Lower Junior Cup in 1993 and U.C.L. Division One winners in 2001.
The reputation for producing successful youth teams has increased over those years and 4 of our youth players (under 16) have been signed by professional league clubs. The achievements of the club on the field have always been supported by a hardworking committee whose chief officers are recorded on a roll in the clubhouse foyer. They along with supporters of the club have built up the excellent changing rooms and clubhouse since 1980. We hope that you enjoy the facilities that they have provided over those years, and we look forward to seeing you again in the future

Formally known as Long Buckby Nomads, the current club was re-formed after the war in 1945 due to the efforts of local hairdresser Bill Ward amongst others. There followed many successful seasons in the Rugby and District League and the Northants Football Combination. With numerous ground improvements on the Sports Field and the beginnings of a fledgling Sports and Social Club, the Bucks gathered a strong enough squad during the 1968/69 seasons to apply and be accepted into the United Counties Football League in 1969. Manager at the time was Alan Rose who would go on to lead the club to honours in future years. Soon after entering the UCL he brought in Pete Smith to replace himself as manager. Under Pete Smith the club won Division 3 in 1969-70 and then won Division 2 in 1970-71 but were refused promotion due to the facilities. But they won it again in 1971-72 and this time were promoted, into the newly renamed Premier Division. During their promotion season to the Premier Division the club also won the UCL Division 2 KO Cup, the Northants Junior Cup and the Daventry Charity Cup. Following on from Pete Smith was former player Dave Conlon, Alan Rose (again) and former Northampton Town player Roly Mills. Alan then became manager of the Junior Teams, building a side which won many competitions including the Umbro Cup. Some of their games were played at Nottingham Forest where one of his players Gary Mills went on to win a European Cup Medal. Others were Mick Kurilla who went onto Birmingham City and Vince Overson who also Captained Birmingham City and Daryl White who went to Southampton.
After Roly Mills, Chris Beckett took over and in the 1983-4 season the club were runners up to Kettering Town in the Northants Senior Cup. The following season the Bucks were runners up in the League by one point to Arlesey Town but won the UCL KO Cup beating Baldock Town 7-3 on aggregate. When Chris left Glenn Burdett was manager for two years. Glenn was followed by our longest serving manager Mike Emms. In his nine years the Bucks only finished in the bottom half of the table once. During this time the club moved to a new pitch after the Sports field obtained more land financed by the club and the Rugby Club as well as help from the school and the District Council. Along with this a new 200 seat stand was built, the playing area fenced off, and the floodlights refurbished and moved. After Mike Emms left, the Bucks struggled and narrowly avoided relegation on several occasions. In January 2007 with a new Chairman Guy Loveland on board, Glenn Botterill was appointed manager bringing in former Rushden and Diamonds player Andy Peaks as his Assistant. New players were brought in, and the Bucks again finished runners up in the UCL Premier Division in 2007-08. Botterill left in January 2009 and was replaced by Adam Sandy. Glenn Botterill returned as manager in January 2010. Season 2011-12 saw the Bucks reach the third qualifying round of the FA Cup losing to Kidsgrove Athletic and then beating the well supported Kings Lynn Town twice to finally win the UCL Premier Division Title Unfortunately, two seasons later we lost our Premier Division status after two unfinished but successful seasons under Dan Carter, promotion to the Premier Division was achieved.

It was a much-changed Badgers line-up that took to the field with Josh Whaler and Aidan Webster the only remaining players from last seasons First Team squad. Starts were given to debutants Brandon Hallmark and Will Jones, with Joey Buckingham selected on the bench. The remainder of the match day squad was made up of players from last seasons successful Reserve and Under 18s teams which is testament to this group of players; it was pointed out after the game that Hallmark was the oldest outfield player at just 25 years old and this by 4 years!! Unfortunately, holidays and injuries meant there were several absentees from the match day squad, most notably Tom Smyth, Eddie Panter, Tom Binder, Tom Simmons, Ryan Nash, Cam Harrison, Bailey Weatherly and Mac Coulson. Played in front of a good crowd of more than 100 which was boosted by the vocal travelling support the game kicked off at a frantic pace. Space was at a premium as both sides struggled to gain any sort of control of the ball and with-it territory.
On 15 minutes the great link up play involving several players presented manmountain Trent Oakes with a clear run-on goal, however with the goalkeeper advancing he unselfishly attempted to square the ball as opposed to shooting which allowed the retreating defender to clear the danger.
A minute later the Badgers conceded a second as a routine clearance deflected off another defender and into the path of Jack Friend who slid the ball past the on-rushing Luke Reeve and into the corner of net, 0-2.
This proved to be the best opportunity for the Badgers in the first period and just past the half hour mark things took a turn for the worse.
The second half proved to be somewhat of a non-event as despite best endeavors, the introduction of new personnel along with changes in tactics and formations the Badgers found March Town a tough nut to crack with the only chance of note falling to Oakes in the 85th minute and whilst his low side footed effort from an angle beat the keeper, it also beat the far post.
On 32 minutes the Badgers lost summer signing Will Jones who departed with what appeared to be a hamstring injury and to compound the Badgers woes a catalogue of errors, most notably from the officials saw March Town awarded a freekick following their attempt to give possession back to Bugbrooke, who had put the ball out to allow Jones to be treated and ultimately withdrawn. Whether is should have been a goal kick, corner kick or free kick is debatable, the consensus of those close by was a corner however those who mattered most were the officials (who were 30-40 yards away) and a free kick was awarded for hand-ball. If that wasn’t bad enough the ball was placed nowhere near the position of the offence and the subsequent free kick was expertly dispatched by Danny Emmington into the far top corner of the net, 0-1.

With the game entering injury time March Town added a third as Jack Friend scored his second with a close-range header that flew into the top corner, before they added a fourth with the final kick of the match through substitute Ryan Lennon which put the icing on the cake. Overall. it was a spirited performance from the Badgers although despite some bright moments in attack they never quite reached top gear; that said the 4-0 score line was flattering for the visitors. ” The start of the Lionesses”
At the time of writing, the Lionesses have just secured the nation’s first international trophy for 56 years. We all hope it inspires girls and boys to start kicking a ball, to follow their dreams, and to achieve the greatest success that sport can offer. It’s been a long road since football was unbanned half a century ago, with the Women’s Super League only becoming fully professional in 2018. But the inception of the women’s game was rocky from the start.
Helen Matthews (pictured) was a women’s football pioneer, and a suffragist, who was involved in the fixture. Only, her name doesn’t appear on the team sheet. To avoid the misogynistic dangers of the game, all players assumed identities.
In 1881, nine years after the first men’s international match between England and Scotland, two Scottish theatre entrepreneurs decided that the idea of women playing football was worth exploring. For all the egalitarian arguments in organising a women’s football match, they were in the business of making money, and believed that with women that was exactly what they would do. They had no idea what they were letting themselves in for. The first step was to find two sides. The candidates were obvious, given the burgeoning success of the men’s game: England and Scotland. Alec Gordon, who had been present at an international in 1880, decided that the same kind of excitement could be generated from female sides of each nation. Next, players were needed. Tricky wingers today are often described as balletic, so perhaps it was fate that the selection would take place from dance schools. The England side was made up mostly of dancers from Lizzie Gilbert Juvenile Ballet Company, while the Scotland side was put together from those in the house troupe of the Princess Theatre. There was a preferred candidate for location too. Glasgow was a growing football hub, and supporters were fanatical. If the match was going to make money, this was the place to do it. However, unforeseen by the organisers was the opposition to the idea of women playing football, so securing a field on which the “Lady Players” could showcase their talents proved impossible. Gordon got onto his contacts in the entertainment industry, and eventually a venue was offered, in Edinburgh. So, the players travelled, and the first ever women’s game took place at Easter Road. To increase interest, and to play to the politics of the time (in which a vocal minority pushed for women’s rights), Gordon claimed the match had been organised “for the purpose of popularising football as a feminine pastime”. While he may have been disingenuous, some of those involved genuinely saw it as an opportunity for progress.
The game went ahead without a hitch. Although the England side started the brighter, it was Scotland who proved their dominance. Lily St. Claire scored the first ever goal in a women’s football match, Louise Cole and Maum Rimeford followed suit soon after, to give the hosts a 3-0 win. The “curiosity”, as it was described, was reported as far afield as New York and Sydney, and a second match quickly arranged, and this time it would take place just outside Glasgow. Unfortunately, the media attention merely served to increase the intensity of the opposition. A large group of spectators were well behaved for almost an hour into the second match before the cordiality broke, and a rope separating the pitch from the fans was cut. A large-scale pitch invasion ensued, in which players retreated into a nearby horse-drawn bus. The police struggled to keep the mob from the bus, and they tore up stakes and fencing to throw at the players. Eventually a driver was found, and the players were driven off at speed.
The newspapers universally condemned the violence, but still attacked the players. “Public feeling has demonstrated against the unseemly exhibition in such a manner that the authorities are now frowning down the innovation” reported the Leeds Mercury, while the Manchester Guardian blamed players who were seeking “to gratify vulgar curiosity by taking part in what is termed a ‘ladies’ football match”. Clearly, the women’s game had a long way to go to get recognition, but, if nothing, else, the first step had been taken.
Despite the rocky road women’s football has walked, including its half-century prohibition, the scenes this summer have been beyond what even it’s most ardent Victorian supports could have imagined. There is still work to do, but finally, women’s football in England is getting its due. Enjoy the game.
