THE GAFFER I’d like to start by extending a warm welcome to the players, officials and supporters of Newport Pagnell Town who are the visitors to the Sett for todays United Counties Premier Division South fixture.

It’s been 10 days since our last fixture which means that we go into today’s game well rested although its somewhat bittersweet given that we’d just registered back-to-back wins for the first time since early September. Let’s hope that the mini break has done us good! To pick up maximum points on the road against two improving sides in Godmanchester Rovers and Easington Sports represents a fantastic return and one that I was delighted with. As I’ve said previously, we’ve more than competed in the vast majority of games this season and with a bit more luck we would have more points on the board. That said, what those results have done is push us into a more comfortable mid-table position although that’s not to say that we should rest of our laurels as there’s still a long way to go. Since our last home fixture, we have added some new faces to the squad with the signings of Cosmin Ionut Capatina, MihaiRazvan Placinta and more recently Joel Gyasi. Both Cosmin and Mihai have come in and hit the ground running with Cosmin scoring on his debut at Godmanchester. With players returning from illness and injury we now have competition for places which can only benefit us between now and the end of the season as we aim to finish as high as possible.

Before I sign off, I’d like to congratulate Daniel, Luke, Rick and the Under 18s on their latest success in the FA Youth Cup and wish them all the best for their First-Round tie against Colchester United on Thursday. Anyway, thank you for your support, enjoy the game, and I hope to see you back at the Sett a week on Tuesday when Cogenhoe United are the visitors in the Northants FA Hillier Senior Cup Quarter Final.

TODAY’S VISITORS Newport Pagnell Town Football Club was founded in 1963, initially as Newport Pagnell Wanderers, playing on a pitch on Bury Field Common. In 1964 they entered the North Bucks League and won Division 3 in the first season. Soon after that they won the North Bucks Division 2 and Division 1 titles in consecutive years and then dominated the North Bucks League for three seasons. In the 1971-72 season the Wanderers joined the South Midlands League, using facilities at the Youth Club in Wolverton Road. Then in 1972 they finally moved to the new facilities at the Willen Road Sports ground, their current home. With this move the club changed its name to Newport Pagnell Town. The 1973-74 season saw Newport Pagnell Town join Division 2 of the United Counties League. Two years later they were promoted to Division 1, where they stayed until they won the Division 1 Championship in 1981-82 and were promoted to the Premier Division.

A few ups and down followed during the next two decades: relegated to Division 1 after finishing bottom of the Premier Division in 1985-86, promoted back to the Premier Division as Division 1 runners up in 1991-92, and then relegated again in 1996-97. After once more winning the Division 1 championship in 2001-02, Newport Pagnell Town were back in the Premier Division again and have remained there ever since. The clubs most consistent spell saw five consecutive top six finishes in the UCL Premier Division from 2008-09 to 2012-13, with third place achieved in 2008-09 and again in 2010-11. The 2009-10 season brought cup success, winning the Berks & Bucks Senior Trophy, which they won again the following year. They were also runners up in the UCL League Cup in 2009-10. The club twice reached the First Qualifying Round of the FA Cup, in 2010-11 and again in 2012-13, when they memorably scored 6 goals in both the Extra Preliminary Round and the Preliminary Round. The best cup achievement to date was reaching the last 32 of the FA Vase in 2011-12 before losing a close match 3-2 to Ashington, from Northumberland, in front of a club record crowd of over 600 at Willen Road on what was probably the biggest day in the club’s history. The 2013-14 season was less successful, a case of building the squad after losing several first team players to retirement or to clubs at a higher level, but some good performances towards the end of the season ensured that the team retained its Premier Division place for 2014-15. In addition to the first team Newport Pagnell Town now has Reserves and Under 18 teams and an extensive and successful youth section. From small beginnings in 1963, it has now become the largest placed non-league club in the Milton Keynes area.

By NICK INWOOD For the first time in our history Bugbrooke made the trip to an improving Easington Sports looking for back-to-back wins for the first time since early September. Going into the game the hosts were on the back of a five-game unbeaten run in the UCL, including four wins which had propelled them into a comfortable midtable position. There was one change to the starting lineup from the team that had won at Godmanchester on Saturday, Callum Westwood replacing Aiden Webster who moved down to the bench. In driving rain and a swirling wind it was Bugbrooke who started the better of the teams, Eddie Panter going close to opening the scoring in the 5th minute following good link up play with Westwood. Westwood was next to test the home keeper, his 19th minute free kick forcing a good save from White in the Easington goal. Bugbrooke’s tails were up and on 21 minutes Eddie Panter was sent clear however the Easington keeper was once again up to the test, saving well with his feet. Undeterred it was EDDIE PANTER who broke the deadlock in the 25th minute, Westwood’s low shot was deflected into his path and he made no mistake drilling the ball into the net from close range leaving White with no chance, 1-0.

Minutes later it was almost two as Greg Ling saw his effort from the edge of the box whistle just wide of the post with the keeper unmoved. Despite dominating the half, the lead remained at one and with the interval approaching the hosts were growing into the game. HALF TIME EASINGTON SPORTS - 0 BUGBROOKE ST MICHAELS - 1 In worsening conditions, it was Easington Sports who continued where they had left off and on 50 minutes the scores were level when the ball evaded Charlie Green who’d allowed a high ball to bounce enabling the attacker in behind, his cross from the left was duly dispatched by Walters leaving Bull with no chance. With the hour mark approaching both sides found themselves a player down, the referee deciding 10-minute sinbins were required, Westwood the offending Bugbrooke player. Easington Sports were now in the ascendency although Joe Power reminded the hosts of the Badgers threat, drawing a good save with an effort from the edge of the area. Despite the introduction of fresh legs in the shape of Webster Bugbrooke were visibly tiring and Easington were sensing that the points were there to be won. Half chances came and went for the hosts and in the 83rd minute they were left kicking themselves as the chance that they had been waiting for went begging.

With Bugbrooke outnumbered a low cross from the right evaded the onrushing attackers however the ball found its way to the unmarked substitute Peters on the far post who somehow blazed over with the goal gaping. A huge let off for Bugbrooke and having survived this scare and throwing caution to the wind it was Bugbrooke who grabbed what proved to be the winner in the 88th minute. Panter found himself through on goal and having rounded the goalkeeper the chance seemed to have gone as he ran wide, however he managed to get his shot away and with defenders back on the line the ball was only half cleared into the path of GREG LING who calmly side footed into the bottom corner from close range. AROUND THE UCL Premier Division South

It’s fast becoming a two-horse race in the South Division as both Harborough Town and Hinckley LRFC continue their winning ways with the latter still boasting a 100% record, their most recent success a 2-0 win against fourth place Lutterworth Town. Wellingborough Town, Coventry United and Coventry Sphinx all continue to go about their business quietly and make up the chasing pack along with Lutterworth and today’s visitors Newport Pagnell Town. At the other end of the table four points from their last 2 games have meant Rothwell Corinthians have added some breathing space whilst Peterborough Northern Star and ON Chenecks have also picked up much needed points.

Premier Division North

A 3-0 win against third placed Anstey Nomads ensured that Long Eaton remained top of the North Division, they now hold a 3-point lead over Gresley Rovers who were in FA Vase action at the weekend. Just below that it remains extremely tight with 8 points separating the top who have lost just seven games between them all season.. Holbeach United are the new bottom markers in the North with Selston picking up their first win of the season last time out, 2-0 at Quorn who continue to struggle themselves as do Sleaford who also lost their place in the Vase at the weekend.

Improving Biggleswade United remain pointless and have a mountain to climb if they are to avoid relegation, they were agonisingly beaten 2-1 against Peterborough NS last time.

Reserve Division Kempston Rovers, are the new leaders in the Reserve Division as their 7-1 win over GNG Oadby Town meant that they took full advantage of their rivals being in cup action.

Harborough Town are in second place following their 9-3 win over Yaxley however they also suffered their first defeat of the season in mid-week going down 2-1 at Desborough Town. With the games coming thick and fast and just 2 points separating the top three there’s likely to be plenty of twists and turns over the coming weeks. At the foot of the table its as you were with Raunds, Irchester, Daventry Town and ON Chenecks all continuing to struggle with just 3 points to separate them.

First football memory Playing for Kingsthorpe Jets and absolutely loving it! 4. Best player you’ve played with I’ve played with loads of quality players, but Roy Hunter, Darren Harmon and Andy peaks are up there with the best. 5. Best player you’ve played against John Harley when he was at Fulham and Ian Walker when he was at Leicester City- absolute class. 6. Best football moment Being given my First Team squad number for Cobblers at 17 and winning the League and Cup double with the Bugbrooke boys. 7. Most memorable match Beating Brackley Town in the Maunsell Cup Final and Cobblers in the Hillier Cup final, both close games. 8. Match you would wish to forget Merthyr Tydfil on a Tuesday night and the weather was horrific. 9. Player/team you would pay to watch For me at the minute it would be our lads and in particular the Under 18s who for me are unreal and it’s so great to see so many youngsters doing well and knocking on the First Team door. 10. Best Manager This is a difficult one as I’ve had so many class managers over the years, I’ve always had great managers at Bugbrooke but the one that stands out is Nick Platnauer from my Rothwell Town days. 11. Biggest joker in the team I’d have to say Luke Reeve, I don’t think I’ve ever had a serious conversation with him – legend! 12. Any Superstitions? Never walk under a ladder and always salute a magpie. 13. Longest in the shower I’d have to say me as I do like a good scrub down

YOUTH FOOTBALL With it being Half Term our youth teams have reached a mini break point in the season which means that we have a reduced playing schedule which provides a perfect opportunity for coaches, players and parents to re-charge the batteries before we start the run in to Christmas. Going into the break our teams are thriving!! Starting with our Minis (9s and 10s) and whilst FA Rules dictate that we are not allowed to publish results they have been positive however the main thing is that the children are enjoying playing football and are developing both technically and socially which is showing in their matches. As far as the older (competitive) age groups are concerned after a slow start our Under 12s Black are currently sitting in second place in the A League

whilst the Under 12’s Blue are unbeaten and top of the B League as a result. There is a similar success story with the 13s as the Whites, who play up a year, sit in a comfortable mid-table position in the A Leagues with the Blacks unbeaten and top of the C League. Its been a disrupted start to the season for the 14s who have started slower than expected however with the quality that they possess it won’t be long before they are pushing up the table. The 15s are another unbeaten side and currently sit in second place in the A League, 3 points behind leaders Brixworth with a game in hand. The 16s are our fourth unbeaten side in the league, five wins and a draw from six games played means they too are top of their division.

When Football starts Wars

Football can be a serious business. It has repercussions for livelihoods, communities, even entire countries. Winning or losing can affect the mood far more than should be possible for something that is “only a game”. But what about when football goes beyond moods, or jobs? What about when it threatens peace? What happens, when football starts a war? It was May 1990. Red Star Belgrade, one of Yugoslavia’s biggest teams, went to fierce rivals Dinamo Zagreb. This was more than even the most virulent standard footballing rivalry. In the febrile atmosphere of the slowly collapsing Yugoslavian state, this was about national pride, a rare opportunity for Serbians and Croatians to show their patriotism while subsumed into the federation that made up their state. It would turn out the be the spark that ignited war, death, and ethnic cleansing.

It was a hot day in Zagreb on 13th May. The general – Tito – who had held together the Yugoslavian coalition had died a decade earlier, and the slow descent to revolution and conflict had reached a tipping point. Endless lines of police officers demonstrated just how dangerous this particular game had become, but nothing could prepare the world for what was to follow. The hatred between Zagreb’s Bad Blue Boys, ultras named for the Sean Penn film, and Red Star’s Delijie, had intensified through the 1980s. When Zagreb had defeated Red Star in 1989, their fans had thrown racial insults at Red Star, a horrific foreshadowing of the events that would come in the early 1990s. One week before the match in 1990, Croatia had held its first election, independent from the Yugoslavian state that was based in Belgrade. The farright nationalists had won a landslide victory, and this was a chance to let out their triumphant frustration against the Serbians, and for the Serbians to pay back the Croatians for daring to vote against them. Red Star’s head ultra, Zljko Raznatovic, led the Delijie to Zagreb from Belgrade. They destroyed the train they were on. Once in Zagreb, they destroyed any symbol they could find of Croatian nationalism. But once in the stadium, they were met with a wall of Dinamo supporters, each equally angry and each equally ready to fight. Anti-Serbian racial chants were ubiquitous, from the majority of the 20,000 crowd that had made their way into the stadium more than an hour before kick-off. The Bad Blue Boys coordinated the attacks, and the Delijie, unwilling to stand by and allow the upstart Croatians to dominate the proceedings, acted. It is difficult to say whether it was planned or spontaneous, the violence was so commonplace that it could have been either.

They began to tear apart the stadium, throwing seats, pieces of advertising boards, rubbish, anything they could lay their hands on, at the Dinamo fans. The home fans responded with rocks. This was more than the usual conflict. Refusing to be boxed in, Red Star’s fans forced their way over the fence and into a group of Dinamo fans, and the fighting began in earnest. The Bad Blue Boys stormed the pitch, facing down hundreds of police officers. When the police started fighting back, Zvonimir Boban got involved, attacking an officer he felt was mistreating a fan. Boban would be held up as a hero of the Croatian resistance for this but banned by the Yugoslavian FA and unable to compete at the 1990 World Cup. The single incident is cited by some as the beginning of the Croatian resistance, and with it the beginning of the Yugoslavian wars. The match itself was, unsurprisingly, abandoned. Red Star’s players managed to get back to the dressing rooms, but Dinamo’s stayed on the pitch to help their fans. The violence continued for several hours, with hundreds injured and thousands involved. But the consequences went far further than football. The match, or lack of it, highlighted to both sides the tensions between the different Yugoslavian nations, and both Croatia and Serbia responded militarily. The war that ignited became the Croatian War of Independence and saw fierce fighting as Croatia sought freedom from Yugoslavia. Serbian forces moved in quickly, supported by ethnic Serbians in Croatia, and seized vast swathes of land, before Croatia turned the tide and eventually forced Serbia out of Croatia for good. But it didn’t stop there, and Croatia began to fight to break up the Yugoslavian State once and for all. This second conflict saw Croatia try to remove Serbians from Bosnia and Herzegovina and led to the far more infamous Bosnian war.

Hundreds of thousands dead, millions displaced, and the first genocide in Europe since the Second World War. It would be difficult to put all the blame on a football match. The tensions were already there and intensifying. But Dinamo Zagreb v Red Star Belgrade has gone down in history as the match that started a war. And what of the ultras involved? We already know Boban became a symbolic hero of the resistance, and Dinamo still have a banner at home games thanking fans at that match for starting their road to independence. But the detail is much, much darker. The Bad Blue Boys were among the first to join the paramilitary groups that rampaged across the country, conducted summary executions and killing thousands.

And the Delijie? Zljko Raznatovic would become infamous as General Arkan in the war, and the ultras joined his Serb Volunteer Guard. That unit, though small, was feared across Yugoslavia, also killing thousands and engaging in ethnic cleansing of Bosnians in the region. The match that started a war might be an exaggeration, but the ultras that murdered thousands? That’s the truth. Enjoy the game.
