THE GAFFER I’d like to start by extending a warm welcome to the players, officials and supporters of Coventry Sphinx who are the visitors to the Sett for this evenings United Counties Premier Division South fixture. If there was a game that summed up our season it was Saturday’s against Cogenhoe United. We are competing in every game and its fine margins that are proving decisive at this moment in time. Going into the game Cogenhoe were on the back of four straight wins making them one of the form sides in the division. Arguably we were the better team however not for the first time this season we came away with nothing to show for our efforts. It was a game where the least we deserved was a point however an early lapse in concentration from a set piece proved decisive.

“If there was a game that summed up our season (so far) it was Saturday’s against Cogenhoe United”

That said to pick up points we need to start turning possession into chances and ultimately goals. With 18 goals from 13 league fixtures this is an area where improvement is needed if we are to reap the rewards that our performances deserve, hopefully we can rectify this tonight. We have also been unfortunate with availability; a more consistent team selection would certainly help. Before I sign off, I’d like to wish Daniel, Luke, Rick and the Under 18s good luck in their FA Youth Cup tie against Leighton Town on Thursday.

Anyway, thank you for your support, enjoy the game, and I hope to see you back at the Sett on Tuesday when Coventry Sphinx are the visitors.

Jamie

TODAY’S VISITORS The proud history of Coventry Sphinx began in 1946 when the name was changed to Sphinx FC from Armstrong Whitworth Aircraft, who had been highly successful in Coventry before and during the Second World War. In the 1950s and 1960s the club continued that success by winning a number of league and cup competitions. Sphinx played a major part in the formation of the Coventry Alliance and continued to win trophies throughout the following decades. The 1990s recession led to the closure of factories in the city and surrounding areas, which in turn meant the disbandment of many of Coventry’s football clubs. Sphinx, in need of a new challenge, joined the Midland Combination Football League in 1993.

MANAGER: Shaun Thomas & John Woodward

In our first season in the Midland Combination, we were promoted from Division 2 and reached the semi-finals of the Birmingham Sunday Vase. A second consecutive promotion followed thanks to a second-placed finish in Division 1 the next season.

CURRENT LEAGUE POS:

After rising to the top division of the Combination it was decided that the club should be linked more closely to the name of our city; Coventry Sphinx was born. The ground was named Sphinx Drive, a stand built at pitch side, and a Coventry City XI invited for the renamed club’s opening match. In 1997 the junior section of the club was formed, starting with just three teams, and Sphinx became the first club in Coventry to achieve the FA Charter. The junior section has grown considerably and there are now hundreds of players representing the club. In 2003 our juniors started competing in the Midland Floodlit Youth League. One of their biggest successes came in the 2014/15 season when they won a league and cup double. Coventry Sphinx completed a remarkable treble achievement in May 2007. In addition to finally becoming champions of the Midland Football Combination – achieving promotion to the Midland Football Alliance in the process –we won the Coventry Charity Cup and the BCFA Midland Floodlit Cup. The 2007/08 season saw the Sphinx enjoy our best ever run in the FA Vase. We reached the quarter-finals for the very first time, losing to the eventual Wembley winners, Kirkham & Wesham (now AFC Fylde), in a replay at Sphinx Drive.

We made it to the semi-finals of the League Cup in the same season and went on to win the Midland Alliance Polymac League Cup by beating Westfields in the final in 2009/10. It’s our biggest honour to date. Ahead of the 2021/22 season, the Sphinx first team made a sideways move as part of FA restructuring at Step 5, competing in a newly formed Premier Division South in the United Counties League. Football never stands still. Local football in Coventry has declined over the years, so to be playing on after more than seventy years is an achievement of which the players, officials and supporters of our club can be proud.

LINE-UP BULL, WHALER, CALVIN GREEN (Capt.), BARNELL, SIMMONS, A.WEBSTER, CHARLIE GREEN, POWER, DRINKWATER, WEATHERLY, LING SUBS: AVERY, PANTER, HARRISON, GIBBON (Not Used) On a glorious Autumnal day Cogenhoe United were the latest visitors to the Sett. Going into the game the visitors came in on the back of four straight wins making them one of the divisions form sides. It was the home side who started well, and it was somewhat against the run of play when on 10 minutes the Cooks took the lead from a corner, Tom Wakley allowed too much time and space to turn and fire low into the net from inside the 6-yard box, a poor goal to concede. Undeterred by this Bugbrooke continued to pose problems for the visiting back line and came close when a ball from Bailey Weatherly flashed across the face of goal with no one on hand to apply the finishing touch.

Minutes later Joe Power found himself through on goal following good link up play however Craig Foxall in the Cogenhoe goal was out quickly to make a smart save.

HALF TIME BUGBROOKE ST MICHAELS – 0 COGENHOE UNITED - 1 There was a change at the break with Curtis Avery introduced in place of George Barnell at the back. The second half was a stop start affair, niggly challenges met by the sound of the referee’s whistle disrupting the flow of the game. This was something that played into the hands of the visitors given that they had the advantage of being a goal to the good. With the game entering the final quarter Cogenhoe were lucky to keep eleven men on the pitch with the already cautioned Daniel Mortimer lucky to escape a second booking for a robust challenge on substitute Eddie Panter, something that didn’t go unnoticed by the Cogenhoe management as the player was substituted whilst Panter was still down receiving treatment.

The Bugbrooke mood didn’t improve as minutes later there were cries for a straight red for what looked like an elbow to the face of Charlie Green, without consulting the assistant who arguably had the best view the man in the middle deemed a caution was sufficient and to rub salt into the Badgers wounds it was they who were reduced to ten men when Joe Power was sent to the sinbin for dissent! Despite dominating possession clear cut chances proved hard to come by with the Badgers limited to efforts from range, the closest being a free kick from Calvin Green which was well gathered by Foxall and a far post header that Charlie Green was unable to keep on target. AROUND THE UCL Premier Division South

Premier Division North

With Harborough Town inactive Hinckley LRFC took the opportunity to close the gap to 4 points (with 3 games in hand) as they recorded a 4-0 win over Biggleswade United to make it ten wins from ten.

Gresley Rovers are the new leaders in the North Division following a 2-0 win over Skegness Town in a game that saw three Red cards in front of 323 spectators!

Coventry United remain firmly in the chasing pack, two goals from Riley-Cole O'Sullivan helping them to a 4-1 win over Godmanchester Rovers.

There are now just 4 points separating the top six with Loughborough Students, Boston Town and Long Eaton all picking up wins, Boston in a six-goal thriller against fourth placed Heather St. Johns.

Also in that pack are Lutterworth Town, Coventry Sphinx, Rugby Town and Newport Pagnell all of whom picked up 3 points at the weekend, whilst Wellingborough Town were forced to settle for a point against GNG Oadby Town.

It doesn’t get any better at the bottom for Selston who suffered a 5-1 home defeat against Leicester Nirvana whilst managerless Holbeach United remainin the drop zone following a 3-0 reversal against midtable Eastwood Town.

Arguably the result of the day came at Desborough where the hosts recorded a 5-1 win over Long Buckby.

Just above them both Sleaford and Quorn picked up useful points.

Reserve Division Result of the day in the Reserve Division goes to MK Irish who thumped visitors Daventry Town 8-2, it was only 2-1 at the interval – a result which saw the hosts move into the top six.

Its as you were at the top, as whilst we maintained our 100% start Harborough Town remain firmly on our coat tails following an excellent 4-3 win over a Wellingborough Town team that started the day in third place. That honour now goes to Kempston Rovers, Arsh Ali the hat-trick hero from the bench in a 5-3 win over Desborough Town for whom that man Brian Farrell scored yet another brace taking his seasons tally to 29 in just 10games, an average of nearly a hat-trick a game!

CHANGING ROOMS 1. Name & Team? Charlotte Gibbs, Ladies Team 2. Previous clubs & Team you support? Welland Valley, Aston Villa, Northampton, Kingsthorpe Pumas. I support THE MIGHTY LEEDS UNITED!!! 3. First football memory Playing for Kingsthorpe Pumas in a tournament and beating the ‘big name’ teams by stupid amounts like 24-0! We obviously won that tournament!! 4. Best player you’ve played with Lauren Handley - mad skills and ended up playing for England in America, what a gal! 5. Best player you’ve played against Probably one of the strikers from Moulton although I don’t know her name. 6. Best football moment Playing against Crick and someone on our team ran up the wing, all of a sudden did a fancy pirouette and landed on the floor screaming. No ball in sight but tore all the ligaments in her left ankle

7. Most memorable match Most recently, winning our First Qualifying Round in the Womens FA Cup against Rugby Town! The girls went WILD in the changing rooms after! 8. Match you would wish to forget It’s already been forgotten 9. Player/team you would pay to watch I’d pay to watch Daniel Powell miss all his pens if that counts? He will never live that down! 10. Best Manager Mark Handley - what a bloke! 11. Biggest joker in the team Tara Hings!!! One of the funniest people I’ve met 12. Any Superstitions? You should never walk under scaffolding! eeerrmmmm … never offer to take the last penalty.

BELLA KNIGHT – 3 GOALS

24th OCTOBER 2021

YOUTH FOOTBALL Overall it was a successful weekend for our teams in the various NFA and NTFA Cup competitions. In the Under 12s NFA Invitation Cup our Blues progressed to Round 2 courtesy of a 3-1 win following an excellent performance against Peterborough based Werrington Athletic, Haz Morgan netting a double. It wasn’t such good news in the Under 16s competition as a late goal saw Glinton & Northborough through 3-2, this after the Badgers had fought back from 2-0 down thanks to goals from Rory Lewis and Billy Panter. In the NTFA competitions the Under 13s White progressed 3-0 against Old Grammarians Tornadoes whilst the 15s won 13-1 against Higham Colts!

In the NDYAL the Under 12s Black moved up to second place in the ‘A’ League following a 10-0 win over bottom of the table Welland Valley whilst the Under 13s Black maintained their excellent start to the season with a 12-3 home win over local rivals Harpole – a result which keeps them top of the league. Elsewhere the Under 14s suffered a 4-1 defeat against Harpole, they will be hopeful of picking up 3 points when they travel to Brixworth at the weekend. Looking ahead to the weekend, all ten teams are once again in action. Good luck to all of our players, we welcome your support!

GOALSCORER

LIAM ISAAC – 4 GOALS

Black History Month: Arthur Wharton His time at Preston was short, and Wharton left just before the Invincible season of 1888/89 to concentrate on his running. However, before he left, he managed to help the team to the FA Cup semi-final and put in several notable performances, including one against Repton which was reported in the press as being “one of the greatest exhibitions of goalkeeping I’ve seen…”.

Racism in football has been at the top of the news agenda for much of the last 18 months, with the vast majority of players deciding to take the knee in solidarity with non-white colleagues whose treatment, especially on social media, has reached a crisis point. The prison sentence handed down last weekend – the first in this country for online racist abuse – is a symbol of the zerotolerance approach that football is beginning to take with the issue, which makes this year’s Black History Month an important milestone. What people might find surprising, however, is the length of the legacy of black professionals in the game, which stretches back to the very infancy of the professional game; under the reign on Queen Victoria, Arthur Wharton, whose outstanding abilities, eccentric playing style and footballing achievements, played with some real legends of the early game, and became Britain’s first black professional footballer. Wharton was born in the Gold Coast – now Ghana – in 1865, his mother a member of the Fante Royal Family. His father was from Grenada, and Wharton picked up a desperate desire to travel in his youth, and to spread his deeply held religious beliefs. At the age of 19, he made the journey from Ghana to the North East of England to join the church and begin work as a missionary, but not long after his arrival his religion was trumped by his sporting desires. In 1885, he joined Darlington. Despite his prodigious speed – in 1886 he equaled the 100-yard dash world record with a time of exactly 10 seconds – Wharton was most often played in goal. His larger-than-life character made him an imperious presence, while his speed meant he could come off of his line and surprise attackers. Imagine Manuel Neuer with the speed of speed of Adama Traore. On top of that, he reportedly enjoyed hanging from the bar and catching shots between his legs. This naturally caught the attentions of anyone who might be watching, and when his amateur Darlington side took on a professional, dominant Preston North End, he definitely caused a stir. Before returning to the North West, they made him an offer, and Wharton gladly accepted.

The erratic and eccentric goalkeeper joined Sheffield Wednesday for a testimonial match against his old teammates, and by this time undefeated league champions, Preston. His performance in the first half went well enough, but by the end of the second Preston had run out 8-1 winners, and Wharton was blamed for the defeat. Wednesday officials questioned his commitment against a former side, and there were very real fears for his safety at the end of the game. Needless to say, he didn’t stay in Sheffield for very long. Wharton returned to football in 1889 when Rotherham United offered him a place in their side. As anyone who has tried to research Victorian football can attest, records are a little incomplete and messy for the period, but by joining the Yorkshire club Wharton became (probably) the first black professional footballer in Britain, and (probably) the first black footballer to play in the First Division. Rotherham represent the longest spell in Wharton’s career, staying with the club until 1894. In 1890 he married local woman Emma Lister, and by 1891 he was also a pub landlord. The Albert Tavern closed in 1914 but was on the corner of Albert Street and Station Road if anyone fancies paying it a visit. But as he neared his 30s and the twilight of his career, Wharton became a problematic element in the dressing room.

In 1894 he moved back to Sheffield, this time to United, but was mainly used as a reserve to William “Fatty” Foulke. At 6’4 and 24 stone, the colossal “Fatty” Foulke earned his nickname, and earned the “who ate all the pies” chant that was first sung about him but was legendary at the club and reduced Wharton to just a handful of appearances. He moved to Stalybridge Rovers in 1895, but again had trouble with the management and moved again in 1897, to Ashton North End. They went bankrupt a year later, and he returned to a changed Stalybridge Rovers where he played with a young Herbert Chapman, before finishing his career at Stockport County. Sadly, Wharton’s life after football was not comfortable, and his developing alcoholism made the situation worse. He worked as a collier for most of the rest of his life and volunteered for the Home Guard throughout the First World War. He continued to struggle throughout the 1920s, and died penniless and largely forgotten in 1930, buried in an unmarked pauper’s grave. His memory was revived in the mid-1990s, when anti-racism charities campaigned for a headstone, and statues, to a footballing pioneer. He was inducted into the football Hall of Fame in 2003 and has statues at both St. George’s Park and FIFA Headquarters to commemorate his achievements. So next time Bukayo Saka, Marcus Rashford or Raheem Sterling are forced to confront the issue of racism in football, just remember that they represent a legacy that is now 140 years old. Enjoy the game.
