THE GAFFER I’d like to start by extending a warm welcome to the players, officials and supporters of Cogenhoe United who are the visitors to the Sett for todays United Counties Premier Division South fixture, a game which represents a local derby of sorts. Going into the game Cogenhoe United are one of, if not the form side in the division, their last defeat coming way back on the 11th September so we know that we are in for another difficult challenge although again it is one that I am sure the players will rise to. Since our last home fixture, a lot has happened! It has been confirmed by the United Counties League that we have been deducted 3 points as a result of playing an ineligible player in our opening three league fixtures. Whilst we are obviously disappointed with the outcome, we respect the decision of the league disciplinary committee and at least we can now move forward knowing where we stand. On the pitch we have progressed in the Northants FA Hillier Senior Cup, beating a young Corby Town 6-0; ironically, we will now face today’s visitors in the Quarter Final.
“Going into todays game Cogenhoe United are one of, if not the form side in the division”
“Since our last home fixture, a lot has happened ”
It wasn’t such good news in the FA Vase as despite dominating the game against Hillingdon Borough our hosts scored a late equaliser before going on to win the tie following a penalty shoot out. In the league we picked up a very useful and well deserved 3 points against Desborough Town last weekend however were left to rue a missed first half penalty as we suffered a 2-0 defeat against high flying Lutterworth Town on Tuesday evening.
Anyway, thank you for your support, enjoy the game, and I hope to see you back at the Sett on Tuesday when Coventry Sphinx are the visitors.
Jamie

TODAY’S VISITORS After playing friendly matches, the club joined the Central Village League and were Division Two champions in 1951–52. However, they folded in the late 1950s or early 1960s, before being re-established in 1967, when they joined Division Two of the Central Northamptonshire Combination. They were promoted to Division One in the early 1970s, and a fourth-place finish in Division One in 1977–78 saw them promoted to the Premier Division. A period of success in the early 1980s saw them win the Premier Division title in 1980–81 and finish as runners-up the following season. They went on to win back-to-back titles in 1982–83 and 1983–84. After finishing third in the Premier Division in 1984–85, Cogenhoe joined Division One of the United Counties League. After finishing second-from-bottom in their first season in the league and being forced to apply for re-election, the 1986–87 season saw them finish second in Division One, earning promotion to the Premier Division. They won the Premier Division Knock-Out Cup in 1995–96 and 1999–2000 and finished as Premier Division runners-up in 1999–2000 and 2000–01. In 2004–05 the club won the Premier Division. GROUND The club played on several pitches around the village before settling at the Playing Fields in 1950, with the first match played against Northampton Yeomanry. However, in order to gain promotion to the United Counties League, the club were required to build a new ground. A site was leased from the Marquis of Northampton, on which Compton Park was established. The first competitive match played at Compton Park was the club's final match in the Northamptonshire Central Combination before moving up to the United Counties League, with Cogenhoe beating ourselves 1–0. An official opening match was arranged with Manchester United. Floodlights were installed in 1992. The ground currently has a capacity of 5,000, of which 100 is seated and 200 covered.

LINE-UP BULL, WHALER, CALVIN GREEN, BARNELL, SIMMONS, A.WEBSTER, CHARLIE GREEN, HARRISON, PORTER (Capt.), PANTER, LING SUBS: DRINKWATER, FREEMAN, AVERY (Not Used), CATON (Not Used) Bugbrooke travelled to the aptly named Waterworks Field, the rain was torrential all afternoon, to face a Desborough side who were sitting just above us in the table prior to kick off. It was Bugbrooke who made a bright start and on 2 minutes captain Porter found himself in space inside the penalty area however he took the unselfish option trying to find a teammate when a shot may have proved a better option. Bugbrooke took the lead on twenty minutes when our two Under 18s combined well, Whalers excellent cross from the right powerfully headed home by Eddie Panter from 6 yards out, 1-0 and no more than the Badgers deserved. The Bugbrooke lead was short lived as Desborough pulled themselves level from the penalty spot when Bull was punished for a poor clearance following a back pass which let in the hosts and whilst the initial shot was blocked
the striker was quickest to react and despite suggestions of a dive Bull was adjudged to have committed a foul; to rub salt into the wounds it was ex-Badger Jake Bettles who stepped up to fire home the spot kick, 1-1. With the interval approaching Bugbrooke had a great chance to re-take the lead when Aidan Webster was played through however, he got it horribly wrong, and his effort cleared the stand behind the goal. HALF TIME DESBOROUGH TOWN - 1 BUGBROOKE ST MICHAELS - 1 Having had the better of the first half the Badgers would have been disappointed at the interval and their mood wouldn’t have improved when the hosts keeping them waiting in the cold and rain for a good few minutes prior to the restart, this despite calls from the official for them to re-take the field.
With conditions worsening the match became a scrappy affair and whilst Bugbrooke remained the most likely to score clear cut chances were at a premium, the best chance falling to Simmons, who on his First Team debut could only drag his effort wide of the far post with the goal at his mercy. As the game moved into the final quarter, it was likely to be a moment of magic or a set-piece that would result in the next goal and fortunately for the Badgers it was the latter as Calvin Green’s free kick from the left was met by the head of Charlie Green who thumped home a close-range header. With that Bugbrooke were comfortably able to see out the game with Bull rarely tested in the visitor's goal; a welcome and deserved 3 points, next up is a trip to highfliers Lutterworth Town on Tuesday night. AROUND THE UCL Premier Division South
Premier Division North
League leaders Harborough Town dropped points for only the second time this season as mid-table Long Buckby picked up a credible point following a 1-1 draw on the 3G.
Despite Tuesday’s game being postponed unbeaten Anstey Nomads remain the leaders of the North Division, sitting 2 points ahead of Gresley Rovers and Heather St.Johns.
Hinckley LRFC now look the team to beat, currently sitting in second place, with nine wins from nine leaving them 7 points adrift of Harborough although with four games in hand – their latest win a 3-1 success over previously unbeaten Newport Pagnell.
Long Eaton down in fifth place remain unbeaten however with games in hand remain a team to watch.
Its as you were at the bottom with Biggleswade United and ON Chenecks continuing to struggle – just a single point between them to date.

TENDAI DAIRE – LUTTERWORTH TOWN
At the foot of the table Selston and Holbeach United continue to struggle, a combined record of no wins and just three draws from seventeen games played suggests that something must change sooner rather than later. Performance of the week must go to Leicester Nirvana who picked up an excellent point from a 4-4 draw with high-fliers Loughborough Students.

HARRY LIMB – BOSTON TOWN DANIEL MUNDAY – GRESLEY ROVERS
Reserve Division You could say that we got out of jail last week, our 100% record was very much at risk when the game against MK Irish was abandoned due to waterlogged pitch with us trailing 2-0 just before the interval.
Brian Farrell of Desborough Town continued his remarkable goal scoring record as he scored all four in a 4-4 draw against Huntingdon Town to make it 27 goals for the season in just 9 games! Improving Bourne Town picked up another 3 points following a 4-1 success against Raunds Town whilst there were also wins for Harborough Town, , GNG Oadby, Rothwell Corinthians, Kempston and Newport Pagnell.

TEAM MATES 1. Name & Team? Tom Caton, First Team
2. Previous clubs & Team you support? I’ve had a few! I started in the Northants Combination at Queen Eleanor and then went to Moulton. Following that I went to play for Cogenhoe Reserves. I then had my first spell at the Sett before moving to ON Chenecks where I remained for 3 or 4 years before returning to the Sett. I support Tottenham which can be up and down at times 3. First football memory First memory in football was probably when my Grandad took me to watch Spurs vs Kettering in a pre-season game. 4. Best player you’ve played with I’ve played with a few young lads that have gone on to play a good level. Played with loads over the years so it’s a hard one to call really 5. Best player you’ve played against Another hard one as there has been a few. Dom Lawless and Fazel Koriya always seemed to score past me 6. Best football moment Spurs vs Ajax in the Champions League was class. Also, I was at Anfield when the Cobblers beat Liverpool.
7. Most memorable match When playing for Cogenhoe we were 2-0 down against Bugbrooke at Half Time, we ended up winning the game 3-2 and with it the League title, this was a good one to remember! 8. Match you would wish to forget I’ve been on the wrong end of a few 8-0 games over Yaxley on the 3G pitch, always one to forget. 9. Player/team you would pay to watch Tom didn’t answer this one – certainly not Spurs! 10. Best Manager Jim Plumpton was a great Manager; he was the one who told me that I should play Centre Half. To be fair I haven’t really played under any bad managers. 11. Biggest joker in the team Young Aidan Webster is a joker just because of some of the clothes he turns up in. Also gets involved with the older lad's banter 12. Any Superstitions? Not really although I’ve had the same shin pads since I was 15! They are older than at least 2 of the lads in the changing room! 13 Longest in the shower? Being honest the lads aren’t too long.

BELLA KNIGHT – 3 GOALS
10th OCTOBER 2021
YOUTH FOOTBALL After five rounds of NDYAL action things are looking good for our Youth section. From 9s to 16s we’ve seen lots of goals, some great football played and most importantly plenty of smiles! The Sett has been a hive of activity with most pitches in use on Saturdays and Sundays – its been great to see and long may it last! As things stand the Under 12s Blue, Under 13s Black and Under 16s all sit at the top of their respective divisions with all three teams unbeaten to date. In the Under 12s ‘A’ League the 12s Black are now three games unbeaten and as a result have Santos Panthers back in their sights.
The Under 13s White have acclimatised well following their move up to the ‘A’ League, winning two and drawing one of their opening four matches to sit in a comfortable mid-table position. The 14s picked up their first win and 3 points of the season last time out thanks to a 3-1 away win against SYL Black, with plenty of games left to play we’re sure that this result will be the catalyst to kick start their season. The 15s remain unbeaten and are now just 3 points off of top spot with a game in hand. Looking ahead to the weekend, all ten teams are once again in action, with a number of teams playing in NFA and NTFA Cup competitions. Good luck to all of our players, we welcome your support!

LIAM ISAAC – 4 GOALS
A CASUAL AFFAIR Corinthians were perhaps the most famous of the early amateur sides. They were founded in 1882, to provide players for the nascent England team who had developed a habit of losing to Scotland. Within four years they provided nine players to the England side, and later provided the entire selection. They beat the ‘Invincibles’ of Preston in 1889 and still hold the record for Man Utd’s worst ever defeat. Their greatest legacy comes in South America, where Corinthians of Brazil, one of the continent’s most successful sides, was set up in response to a tour by the English amateurs. In the 1930s, they combined with Casuals to become Corinthian-Casuals, who still play in the Isthmian League to this day. But while the story or Corinthians is well known, what of Casuals? The other half of the arrangement are often overlooked as the history of the club is detailed, and the only obvious legacy is the current club’s distinctive brown and pink kit. But there is a history there, and it deserves to be told. Initially founded just a year after their sister club, in 1883, Casuals was intended to provide a side made up of players from three of the most prestigious public schools in the country; Eton, Charterhouse, and Westminster. There is some dispute over where the famous colours have come from; the most likely explanation appears to be that it was a mixing of the school colours of Charterhouse and Westminster, although they may also have been the racing colours of founding member Thomas William Blenkiron. Later, they would expand to take players from all public schools, as professionalism took hold and working-class players began to dominate.
This presented a problem for casuals, who took part in the FA Cup in the first five seasons following their creation and lost in the very first round each time (no qualifying rounds at this stage). Casuals would have to wait until the divide between the professional and amateur game to start to make their mark. As it happened, that divide came in 1893. Concerned by the dominance of professional sides, Sheffield FC suggested the creation of an amateur competition, and although initially rebuffed, the FA eventually created the FA Amateur Cup. Corinthians’ founder “Pa” Jackson was appointed head of the amateur committee, and the competition kicked off in a quarterfinal stage. For Casuals however, whose opponents Chirk had withdrawn, the real action began in the semi-finals. A 1-0 win over Sherwood Foresters set up a final against Old Carthusians to be played at the Athletic Ground, in Richmond. A tight game saw Casuals fall to a 2-1 defeat, but they had arrived on the amateur stage. Player records at this stage are a little confusing, especially at the amateur level. Registrations did not exist as we would recognise them, and each club was more like a social and athletic society than the more professional outfits we see today. All of which means that players were often playing for more than one club (Casuals shared a lot of players with Corinthians, making the eventual merger much smoother). What we can say for certain is that in the late nineteenth century, four players registered with Casuals played for England. Although dwarfed by the 86 that came from Corinthians, it is still an achievement for an amateur side whose players had to be selected alongside the professionals.
In 1905, Casuals were founder members of the Isthmian League, and won the inaugural Amateur Football Alliance Senior Cup in 1908, losing the final the following year as well. They won it again in 1913. Despite never winning the league, they developed such a reputation that they were able to tour the country playing exhibition matches, receiving plaudits for their playing style, if not having the same lasting impact of Corinthians. They remained in the Isthmian League for the following thirty years, retaining their amateur status even as others around them professionalised, or at least started paying their players. The current CorinthianCasuals retain the proud amateur heritage, the only side at their level that do. The club's zenith, ironically, came not long before the merger with Corinthians that created the current club. In the 1935-36 edition of the FA Amateur Cup, Casuals made their way through round after round until, for the first time since before the First World War, they made the final again. A 1-1 draw at Selhurst Park saw a replay take place at Upton Park, where 28,000 fans turned up in support. Casuals took the game 2-0. Such was the quality of that side that Casuals were even able to provide a player to the England national side; Bernard Joy (pictured), who in being selected became the last amateur to ever represent his country. The following season, as both sides continued to struggle commercially against the increasingly saturated London football market, Corinthians and Casuals put together a joint committee that pre-empted the official merger of the sides in 1939. Casuals played their final match as a solo-side on 6th May 1939, an exciting 4-3 victory over local rivals Wimbledon. The combined side managed to play just the one game before war broke out, and following its conclusion, Corinthian-Casuals took Casuals place for their first ever season in the Isthmian League. Enjoy the game.
