THE GAFFER I’d like to extend a warm welcome to the players, officials and supporters of Harborough Town who are the visitors to the Sett for todays United Counties Premier Division South fixture. As things stand today’s visitors look as though they will be the team to beat as after eight games, they have opened a 6-point cushion at the top of the table due to their enviable 100% record (8 wins from 8). Tonight’s game which comes on the back of a narrow 2-1 defeat to Wellingborough Town represents a huge challenge for our players, one that I hope that they will rise to! Before I sign off, I’d like to take the opportunity to congratulate Dale, Powelly and the lads from the Reserve Team who were deserved recipients of the United Counties League Reserve Division Team of the Month for August. I’d also like to wish Powelly, Luke, Rick and the Under 18s players good luck for thei FA Youth Cup tie at Cogenhoe United on Thursday evening.

Coming into the game Wellingborough themselves were on the back of four successive wins, a run that had seen them move comfortably into mid-table having opened the season with three successive defeats.

Following a 10-minute delay the game was thankfully re-started and it was the Badgers who took advantage of having an extra man, taking the game to the visitors.

There were two changes to the Badgers line-up from the team that had won in mid-week with Jake Bull and Dan Field coming into the starting eleven in place of Lewis Landers and Eddie Panter; the former coming in for his debut in the Bugbrooke goal. For the second successive home game one of the Assistant Referee’s was a no show which meant that Brian Curtis kindly took the flag. The game itself started in scrappy fashion with both sides struggling to create any chances of note. With the half hour approaching in a bizarre incident a Wellingborough Town player appeared to say something untoward to the Referee who duly dispatched the offender to the sin-bin; before he could leave the centre circle something else was said by another

On 35 minutes the Badgers took the lead as Calvin Green stepped up to dispatch a trade-mark free-kick around the wall and into the bottom corner.

Having seemingly weathered the storm the Badgers fell behind as on 70 minutes Jake Newman swept the ball home from close-range to give Wellingborough the lead for the first time. With the Badgers struggling to fashion clear openings Wellingborough Town were able to comfortably see out the game and with the game moving into the final stages just to rub salt into the wound the Badgers lost Captain Joe Lewington to a seemingly significant injury.

As you would expect it was the visitors who came out for the second period firing on all cylinders; taking the game to the Badgers who were fortunate to escape on several occasions. It therefore came as no surprise when the pressure told with Lloyd Buckby dispatching the equaliser on 57 minutes with a shot from just insider the area following a clinical move on the righthand side. The game was now on a knife edge and with the Badgers at sixes and sevens they needed to re-group which they did albeit they were indebted to a good save from Bull on his debut to maintain parity.

AROUND THE UCL Premier Division South

SEVEN Premier Division South teams made progress in the FA Vase at the weekend as that competition took priority over league fixtures. In the league tonight's visitors Harborough Town made it eight wins on the spin as they brushed aside ON Chenecks 5-0 in their most recent outing, a result which sees them open a 6-point lead at the top of the table. Newport Pagnell who picked up a 3-1 win against GNG Oadby Town are the only other team with a 100% record however they have played four games less. The shock of the day came at Coventry Sphinx where mid-table Desborough picked up 3 welcome points courtesy of a 3-2 win.

Boston Town are the early pacesetters in the North Division maintaining their 100% record in mid-week with an excellent 4-1 win over Holbeach. Sitting just behind Boston are Anstey Nomads, Heather St Johns and Long Eaton all of whom remain unbeaten. At the opposite end of the table Selston, Eastwood and Leicester Nirvana are all still looking for their first points.

Reserve Division The result of the day came at Daventry where strugglers Bourne Town

picked up their first points of the season courtesy of an excellent 3-2 win; a result that sees them replaced at the foot of the table by Irchester United who remain pointless after a fifth successive defeat, going down 3-0 against GNG Oadby Town. At the other end we now hold a 5-point lead over Newport Pagnell who remain unbeaten following a 2-0 success from their trip to Raunds Town whilst Harborough Town maintained their 100% record thanks to a 5-2 win against Huntingdon Town.

TODAY’S VISITORS Harborough Town F.C is the realisation of the merger of Harborough Town Juniors, Harborough Town Spencer and Harborough Minis in 2007, which created one club for all ages, gender and ability for the Market Harborough community. Based in Market Harborough, where our impressive facilities cater for all of the club’s teams. The club became an FA Charter Standard Club in 2004 and through consistent development has achieved FA Charter Standard Community Club status which is the highest accolade currently available and recognises best practice, on-going development and a positive impact within the local community. The club currently has teams that include Minis, Girls, Junior, Youth, Ladies, Inclusive, Senior and Veteran sides. Harborough Town Juniors was formed in 1975, running teams from U11 to U16. After initially playing at Symington’s, they developed facilities on Northampton Road in the 1990s. However, there was a desire to have senior football for the youngsters to move on to, and consequently they formed links with Spencers United, and in 2007 they merged with Harborough Town Spencers, as they had become called. In the early 2000s Harborough Minis had been formed to cater for U11s, and in 2007 they also joined the merger to create Harborough Town FC. After three seasons in the Northants Combination, managed by Andy ‘Stan’ Wilson, the club won promotion the UCL by winning the Premier Division. On 14 August 2010 Market Harborough witnessed the return of UCL football for the first time since Symington’s FC’s last game in 1954, and by 2012 ‘The Bees’, as they had become known, had won promotion to the UCL Premier Division. In the early years of HTFC the Northampton Road ground had seen much improvement, with a new clubhouse, first team pitch, two stands and a 3G artificial pitch. The Bowden’s Park ground had become a fine ground, but in 2018 the installation of a Class 1 artificial pitch (3G), funded by Market Harborough District Council, a Stadium Improvement Grant and the Football Foundation, saw the creation of The Harborough Town Community Football Ground.

All areas of the club are thriving, with the senior side having completed a decade in the UCL. The aborted Covid-19 seasons saw us have good starts, reflecting the clubs on field progress. During those seasons HTFC had over 40 sides, covering all types and genders of football in the community. In 2020 experienced UCL manager Mitch Austin joined the club. After 9 years of steady progress at Step 5 HTFC is ambitious for progression within the FA Pyramid.

YOUTH FOOTBALL Week 2 of the NDYAL saw all ten of our youths teams in action………. The action got underway on Saturday with both the 9s and 10s White at the Sett whilst the 10s Black made the trip to Daventry Town. Onto Sunday and on the back of a 4-0 mid-week success over Kingsthorpe Jets the 12s Black suffered a slender 3-2 defeat against FFA Gold, a result that leaves the team in mid-table. In the 12s ‘B’ League our Blues followed up their opening day success at Thorplands with a 7-2 win over Towcester Saints, Haz Morgan scoring a hattrick which included his 100th NDYAL goal; a result that leaves the team with the only 100% record going into round three of fixtures.

Having moved from the ‘C’ League to the ‘A’ League the Under 13s White suffered a narrow 2-1 defeat against Earls Barton whilst the Blacks made it two wins from two in the ‘C’ league thanks for a 3-2 away win against Bilton Ajax Reddings. It was back to back defeats for the 14s Black who went down 4-1 against ON Chenecks; it’s a marathon not a sprint! The 15s opened their account for the season with a goalless draw against Briixworth at the Sett whilst the 16s made it back to back wins with another comprehensive win, this time 4-0 against Brixworth. Looking ahead to the weekend, all ten teams are once again in action, good luck to all of our players, we welcome your support!

THE FORGOTTEN MAN When we look back at the great tactical innovators of the game, certain names crop up time and again. Pep Guardiola and Jurgen Klopp are held up as heirs to a footballing genius laid down by Bill Shankly, Arrigo Sacchi, Rinus Michels and Johan Cruyff. For a certain type of football fan, Helenio Herrera and Karl Rappan are idols. But there are very few who have had the impact and legacy of and Englishman, mostly forgotten to history, by the name of James Hogan. Born in Burnley, Jimmy Hogan spent most of his playing career in the North- West and finished at Bolton, where he started asking questions about technique and tactics that were simply not asked at the time. “Just keep having a pop lad. If you get one in ten, you’re doing well” he was once told by his Burnley manager after asking for some finishing advice. For Hogan, this just wouldn’t do. After beating Dordrecht 10-0 in a pre-season friendly, he resolved that the continent was for him and in 1910, at just 28, he took a two-year contract with the Dutch side to “teach those fellows how to play properly.” He implemented the Combination (passing) Game that had been developed in Scotland and focused on ball control with his players. The Dutch were so impressed by the improvement at Dordrecht that they invited Hogan to take charge of the national side for a game against Germany, which he won 2-1. While England still focused on physicality – something that would be to their detriment for many decades – Hogan enjoyed a burgeoning reputation across Europe. When Austria, in 1912, played poorly in a game against Hungary, their manager Hugo Meisl approached the referee and asked him how to improve the side before the Olympics. The referee, James Howcroft, recommended Hogan. With just six weeks to make changes, Hogan changed the diet of the players and focused on their technique. Austria destroyed Germany 5-1, before losing to Hungary and entering a secondary tournament, in which they made the final. Despite losing, Hogan and Meisl struck up a friendship that meant that, when Germany approached Meisl for a reference to appoint Hogan as their manager, Meisl quickly undermined them by offering Hogan a job preparing Austria for the 1916 Olympics. It proved a hugely important development. Hogan set to work with the national side, while also coaching club sides when he could, and his schedule became so stretched that he started his first session at 5:30am. Everything was looking up until the summer of 1914, when war broke out. Hogan found himself on the wrong side of the lines as the conflict erupted. He was briefly interned but in trying to fight the war honorably Austria soon released those who were not considered a threat, on condition that they report to the local police station every day. However, the Austrian FA broke Hogan’s contract and, while the Red Cross were able to return his wife to Britain, he was forced to remain and lucky to find some employment on the estate of two rich English brothers. As the war went on, he was eventually, through the confusing interventions of an English typewriter salesman and an Hungarian nobleman, moved to Budapest, probably with a huge bribe to the local Red Cross. That nobleman was Baron Dirsztay, and Baron Dirsztay was Vice-President of MTK, where Hogan was put to work. The first couple of years were, by footballing standards, relatively stress free. The war meant that the national championship had been suspended, and Hogan was able to invest the time into deeply instilling the passing philosophy. He wasn’t desperate to change the 2-3-5 formation that had come from England (unlike Herbert Chapman and his WM), but thought the formation should be much more fluid, with players moving around the pitch as necessary or advantageous while keeping the ball. It was the first hints of Total Football.

The league restarted for 1916-17, and Hogan’s MTK broke the dominance of Ferencvaros, who had won eight of the first 11 titles, and beat them to the 1917 Championship. They repeated the feat in 1918, at the end of which Hogan moved back home, where he was viewed with suspicion or outright hostility for having spent the war in Central Europe. When he applied to the FA for the compensation, they were offering to footballers who had financially struggled because of the war, he was instead offered some khaki socks and told “we sent these to the boys at the front and they were grateful.” Hogan returned to Europe and spent a decade extolling the virtues of what would become known as the Danubian School in Switzerland (where he was also involved in national selection), France and Germany, as well as spells back in Austria and Hungary, until the political climate of the early 1930s led to his return to England, fearing another imprisonment should war break out. He was given a job at Fulham, but resistance to his philosophies lead to poor results and his left before the end of his first season. He ended up at Aston Villa, who he led to the Second Division title and the semi-final of the FA Cup. He effectively retired before the Second World War and focused on youth coaching. His players were so highly regarded that they were later invited to coach across Europe and the world, spreading the Danubian School as they went. Hogan’s influence can be felt in France, Germany, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Uruguay, Brazil, Argentina and more, but none more so than in Hungary. The Magical Magyars, the Hungarian side that lost just one match between 1950 and the 1956 Hungarian Revolution which broke up the side, are statistically the greatest side to have ever played the game, using the Elo rating system on which modern FIFA rankings are modelled. When they beat England in 6-3 1953, in the “Match of the Century”, the press clamored for Sandor Barcs, of the Hungarian delegation, to tell them how Hungarian football had developed so strongly. His response: “You had better go back 30 years to the time your Jimmy Hogan came to teach us how to play.” Enjoy the game.
