THE GAFFER I’d like to extend a warm welcome to the players, officials and supporters of Wellingborough Town who are the visitors to the Sett for todays United Counties Premier Division South fixture. It’s great to be back on home soil following successive away fixtures. In fact, today’s game marks the first in a run of four consecutive home fixtures! It was great to pick up maximum points on the road against ON Chenecks and Peterborough Northern Star; a fantastic return given that we now go into a tough looking period with high flying Harborough Town and Coventry United to come, following which the NFA Hillier Cup tie against Corby Town That said, these are the games that we should look forward to; except for the home game against Leicester Road we have more than competed in every game that we have played this season and with a little more luck here and there we could easily have more points on the board, however 10 points from our opening 7 league games represents a solid return.

Looking at today’s opposition they currently sit one place and two points above us in the league table however are the form side in the league having recorded 4 successive wins including an excellent 1-0 success against Rugby Town last time out – with local pride at stake a tough game is expected. Anyway, thank you for your support, enjoy the game, and I hope to see you at the Sett on Tuesday evening when unbeaten Harborough Town are the visitors.

Bugbrooke St Michaels bagged their second win of the season on Wednesday night as they beat Chenecks at the Old Northamptonians Sports Ground, a first half brace from Dan Porter enough to condemn the hosts to their third straight league defeat of the new United Counties Football League Premier Division South campaign. The visitors took an early lead on eleven minutes when an initial corner on their right curled into the box was headed away for another, Billy Snaith trotted across, and this time played the ball to the near corner of the six-yard box where Porter flicked his header across goal and despite outstretched legs the ball bounced into the bottom corner.

Both sides created chances from there, but the away side doubled their lead moments before the break when a throw in routine saw the ball moved into the area and despite Chenecks keeper Charlie Woods making a save from an initial shot, Porter was first to the rebound to tuck home, the goal scorer almost clinched his treble midway through the second half however a raised flag was to deny. AROUND THE UCL Premier Division South Harborough Town are the pacesetters in the Premier Division South as they made it seven wins from seven on Tuesday when they brushed aside Cogenhoe 6-0 at Compton Park. Hinckley LRFC and Newport Pagnell also boast 100% records however have only played 4 and 3 games, respectively. At the foot of the table Biggleswade United continue to struggle with no points on the board and a -41 goal difference! ON Chenecks are also pointless following Wednesday’s home defeat against Easington Sports, who claimed their win of the season to move clear of the bottom two.

Heather St Johns are the new leaders in the North Division however the chasing pack of Long Eaton, Boston Town and Skegness Town all sit just a point behind in what is a congested top eight. Congratulations to Long Eaton who were the only UCL North team to progress in the FA Cup, they did so by beating Coleshill Town at the weekend. At the opposite end of the table Leicester Nirvana are now the only team still looking for their first point following defeat against Gresley Rovers on Saturday.

Reserve Division Following our mid-week win over Desborough Town we are now one of four

unbeaten sides although something has to give in the next few weeks as Saturdays fixtures see us travel to second placed Kempston who like ourselves hold a 100% record, as do 4th place Harborough Town who we face the following week. Also unbeaten are Newport Pagnell who picked up an excellent win in mid-week over previously unbeaten Wellingborough Town. At the other end there are still four teams looking for their first point of the season with Bourne Town currently rooted to the bottom on goal difference

HARRY FEAR, JACK BAKER, JAIDEN VALENTINE, CHARLIE BEVIN, THEO BROWN (Capt.), JESSE KILGOUR, TOMMY ANDREWS, HARRY MCILHINEY, ALFIE INWOOD SUBS: JOSH GURNEY, HAZ MORGAN, COLE WRIGHT, JOSEPH BOYLE Having finished the 2020/21 season with defeat against Thorplands at Round Spinney, the Badgers made the journey to the same venue to face the same opposition for the opening fixture of the 2021/22 season, a first ever fixture in a competitive league. With Ozzy Egerton having moved to Harpole over the summer, and Jude Foskett, Joseph Boyle and Tommy Andrews new additions the squad had a different look and feel to it albeit Foskett had sustained a broken arm in the lead up to the season opener meaning that he will wait a little longer for his competitive debut. Also missing was the influential George Powell and whilst progress is being made, he remains on the treatment table due to an on-going knee injury. It was the hosts who came out of the traps firing, as their danger man no.9 pressurised the Bugbrooke defence into losing possession which enabled him a clear run-on goal and as he had done in the past, he only needed one invitation as he fired low into the corner of the net, 0-1 and not how we wanted to start the season. Calm heads were needed and after a scrappy period of play the chances started to flow with Alfie Inwood and Theo Brown both forcing saves from the home goalkeeper.

Mid-way through the half the pressure eventually told as a deep cross from Charlie Bevin on the right-hand side was finished from close range by ALFIE INWOOD, 1-1 and no more than the Badgers deserved. Having worked hard to get back into the game the Badgers almost shot themselves in the foot as following a good interchange directly following the kick-off Harry Fear was forced into a fine double save in order to maintain parity. This was as good as it got for the hosts as chances came and went for the Badgers with both Bevin and Tommy Andrews seeing efforts come back off the frame of the goal therefore it was no surprise when the Badgers took the lead, ALFIE INWOOD on hand to tuck the ball home from close-range, 2-1. With Thorplands having weathered the storm, or at least thinking they had, Bugbrooke introduced JOSEPH BOYLE from the bench in a move that merely increased the pressure on the hosts and having gone close with an earlier effort Joe cut inside a couple of defenders before hammering a shot into the net for his first Bugbrooke goal, 3-1 and at this stage in cruise control.

HALF TIME: THORPLANDS - 1 BUGBROOKE ST MICHAELS - 3

Just like the first half and previous matches the concentration defensively was not there and following a great chance for Haz Morgan to make it four, arguably he struck it too well, the ball was transferred to the opposite end of the pitch where it was allowed to bounce over the defence enabling the no.9 another run on goal and he dually obliged with another calm finish, 3-2. With 25 minutes on the clock, it was all to play for however the Badgers nerves were soon settled when a surging run from Theo Brown into the box resulted in the captain being upended and the spot kick was awarded. With Brown appearing to be hurt by the challenge, JAIDEN VALENTINE stepped up to take the spot kick and having seen his initial penalty AND the rebound both saved he was on hand to prod home at the third attempt, 4-2. From this point on there was only going to be one winner, ALFIE INWOOD completed his hat-trick following great set-up play by Boyle, TOMMY ANDREWS then grabbed a goal with a fantastic strike high into the net from the edge of the box before HARRY MCILHINEY got his name onto the scoresheet with a close-range double in the final minutes.

TODAY’S VISITORS The original Wellingborough Town was formed in 1867 and is the sixth oldest football club in the country and a founder member of the first football league. Traditionally known as ‘The Doughboys’ which derived from the traditional local dish of ‘Hock & Dough’ Wellingborough Town are also the oldest club in the County of Northamptonshire. Upon formation in 1867 the club played under part Handling Code until 1869 when they became a true soccer club. At that time the club ground was in Broad Green, Wellingborough and the club colours were old gold and black. In 1879 Wellingborough Town became the first club to play under floodlights when they entertained Bedford at the Bassett’s Close, Wellingborough. The game was a close encounter with Bedford winning 1-2. The lights were powered by generators positioned at each end of the pitch.

In 1894 the Wellingborough Charity Cup Competition started and by this time the Club was playing on the Thomas Field, Union Lane. Wellingborough.

CURRENT LEAGUE POS:

In the same year the Club became founder members of the Leicestershire & Northants League and in the following season joined the Midland League. The first recorded winners of the now 1st Division of the United Counties League were Wellingborough Town Reserves. The following year, 1896-97, saw the Club become founder members of the United league. In 1899-00 the Club were runners-up in the Midland League before joining Division 1 of the Southern League in 1901-02. It was at this time they moved to their current ground at the Dog & Duck, London Road, Wellingborough. In 1905 the Club changed its name to Wellingborough Redwell but resigned at the end of the season after finishing bottom of Division 1. The first recorded silverware was won when they became League Champions in 1910-11. The Club continued to be known as Wellingborough Redwell until 1919 when they reverted to their former name of Wellingborough Town F.C. In 1922 the Club ground record of 7,169 was set when they entertained Kettering Town in the Maunsell Cup Final, winning 2-1.

They successfully applied to join the Metropolitan League in 1968-69 and finished a creditable 7th. The following year however, they were League Champions and in 1970-71 they joined the West Midlands (Regional) League Premier Division finishing a creditable 3rd. With their ambitions now on a ‘high’ the Club joined the Southern League Division One North in 1971-72. The Club was able to maintain mid-table positions throughout the seventies before a reorganisation of the league saw them enter the Midland Division of the Southern League after the League was split into Southern and Midland Divisions with no Premier Division. They remained in what was known as the Southern league, Midland Division until 1988-89 when they were relegated to the United Counties League. There then followed 13 years of struggle with the Club avoiding relegation from the Premier Division of the United Counties League on several occasions. Their worst fears became a reality when in season 2001-02 they folded and resigned from the League. This was a black period in the history of a club that had formed the backbone of the first professional league. Wellingborough Town has figured prominently in the annals of the FA Cup and many exciting encounters have been recorded against old opponents such as Peterborough United, Kettering Town, Corby Town and Cambridge City. The pinnacle of their Cup success was when they reached the First-Round proper in 1965 being drawn against Aldershot, who at that time were in the Football League Third Division. Despite losing 2-1 Wellingborough were not disgraced. The Town had been without a senior football team for a period of two years when a local retired Senior police Officer, Laurie Owen, formed group of sporting friends in an attempt to resurrect the ‘Doughboys’. He was joined by a local businessman, Alan Warwick, whose father played for the ‘Doughboys’ in the twenties and the then Mayor of Wellingborough, David Smith. In their first season back in senior football the team finished second in the United Counties League Division One and were promoted to the Premier Division after losing just one game. The NFA Junior Cup was also won after beating Peterborough Northern Star 2-0 after extratime at Northampton Town’s Sixfields stadium. They have remained in the United Counties Premier Division since.

WITNESS HISTORY BEING MADE

YOUTH FOOTBALL The NDYAL season kicked off in earnest at the weekend for eight of our ten youth teams. The action got underway on Saturday as the 9s welcomed Roade Ninjas to the Sett whilst the 10s White made the trip in the opposite direction. Both of our teams turned in fantastic performances.

The 10s Black were without a fixture. Onto Sunday where the 12s Black suffered defeat in their opening ‘A’ League fixture, Santos Panthers the visitors who went away with the 3 points courtesy of a 3-1 win. It was better news in the 12s ‘B’ League where our Blues opened the season with an emphatic 8-2 win over Thorplands, Alfie Inwood grabbing a hat-trick.

There were wins for both of our Under 13s teams, the Blacks picking up a fantastic 4-1 away win from their trip to Bilton. Since the weekend games we have been in dialogue with the NDYAL and it has been agreed that our 13s Whites will be moved from the ‘C’ League to the ‘A’ League with immediate affect; having seen the boys play they will more than hold their own at that level, this despite the team playing a year up.

Like the 12s the 14s Black suffered defeat at the hands of Santos Panthers, this time it was 3-0 to the visitors. The 15s were without a game whilst the 16s ran out comprehensive 5-0 winners against Wootton St George at the Sett.

EL DIVINO MANCO - The One-Armed Wonder Winning the World Cup is the pinnacle of any player’s career. So few get the chance to even play in the competition, let alone win it, that the feeling is preserved just for the rarefied few, whose magic has lit up the global game. But only one side can claim the be the first World Cup winners, and when Uruguay romped to the title (scoring 15 goals in just four games), their final goal was scored by a one-armed man. Hector Castro had been born into abject poverty in the early years of the twentieth century, and in the overcrowded melting pot of Montevideo that meant he had to get a job early. South America was beginning to industrialise, and Castro found employment in Uruguay’s burgeoning heavy industries at the tender age of just ten. It was at 13 that he would suffer his life-changing injury, as an electric saw severed his right forearm. The end of a promising young football career in most cases, but for El Divino Manco – The Maimed God – it was just the beginning. After a long recovery, and coming to terms with his injury, Castro decided to focus on his feet. At 17, he began his footballing career at Athletic Club Lito, a small amateur team that had just been promoted to the top flight of Uruguayan football, and Castro started showing his stuff. A tough, combative forward, it would be easy to assume he drew the eye because of his injury, but little Lito made quite a splash in their short stay in the First Division (they disappear from the Uruguayan Championship records in 1928, though various attempts to restart them continued beyond the Second World War). In 1922, defender Jose Nasazzi was snapped up by ambitious and monied new club Bella Vista, and a year later Castro was poached by giants Nacional who had already won their first ten titles in the 21 years of the Uruguayan league. Pedro Cea, an Inside Left who played just behind Castro, would manfully stay on at Lito until 1927, before following Nasazzi to Bella Vista. All three loom large in the history of Uruguayan football. Castro was an immediate hit at Nacional, helping the club to an 11th title in his first season and making his international debut, as well as scoring his first international goal, against Chile. He was disappointed not to be selected for the 1924 Olympic team – the World Cup before the World Cup had been invented – and watched former teammates Nasazzi and Cea win gold in Paris. But Castro had practice at overcoming adversity, and doubled down in four goal-laden, successful seasons to ensure he couldn’t be left out of the 1928 side that went to Amsterdam. Uruguay beat the hosts in the first round, and a dangerous Italian side in the Semi-Final, to set up the gold medal match against perennial rivals Argentina. 250,000 people applied for tickets to the final, and Argentina had added an extra edge to the game by questioning Uruguay’s 1924 victory – Argentina having not participated in those games. Hard-fought, the first match ended in a draw, leading to a replay. Everything was finely balanced until Hector Scarone, Castro’s teammate at Nacional, fired home on 73 minutes. Uruguay held on to take gold for the second time, but bigger fish were on the horizon. On the face of it, FIFA’s decision to host the very first World Cup in Uruguay makes footballing sense. They had shown themselves to be the best team in the world in the 1920s. They were celebrating the centenary of their independence from Spain. But, probably more importantly, the Uruguayan government had offered to underwrite every side’s travelling expenses. But for Castro there was a bigger problem. His place in the side was under threat from Peregrino Anselmo, the Penarol forward who is often believed to be the first False 9. Castro doubled down again, but Anselmo wasn’t going to let his chance slide either, and by 1930 both were still in contention.

Castro was given the honour of starting the first game of Uruguay’s home World Cup campaign against Peru and scored the only goal in a tense affair. But Romania presented a different problem and Anselmo was considered the answer. He took his chance too, scoring in a comfortable 4-0 romp that threatened to spell the end of Castro’s short World Cup career. It was Anselmo who got the nod in the semi-final too and backed up Pedro Cea’s hat-trick against Yugoslavia with two goals of his own, and all but sealed his place in the final. However, before the end of the game, he picked up a knock, opening the way for Castro again. The other semi-final saw their great rivals thrash the United States 6-1, setting up another fiery final against Argentina. Relations between the two sides had, if anything, disintegrated since the 1928 Olympics. Before the game, some reports claim, Uruguay were offered significant sums of money to throw the game and threatened with death if they refused. As the two teams lined up, neither were willing to play with a ball supplied by the other side, fearing tampering and giving away an advantage. FIFA eventually had to step in, declaring that the first half would be played with am Argentinian ball, and the second half with a Uruguayan ball. All tempestuous excuses put aside, the game kicked off in front of, officially, 68,000 at the Estadio Centenario (though South American football struggled to keep out ‘unofficial’ fans on top). Uruguay started the brighter, with Pablo Dorado giving the hosts a 12th minute lead, and the South American football hierarchy looked secure. But Argentina were determined to avenge their 1928 final defeat, and Carlos Peucelle’s powerful shot levelling things up on 20 minutes. Guillermo Stabile, the tournament’s top scorer, then took matters into his own hands and fired past Enrique Ballestrero in the Uruguayan goal to give Argentina a half time lead. Clearly there was nothing in the ball-tampering fears of either side, but the psychological impact of playing with a ball they had provided was the boost the home side needed, and they exploded into the second half. It took a little over 10 minutes for Pedro Cea to level things up again, and Santos Iriate gave Uruguay the lead in the 68th minute. As the nerves set in, the fans got restless, and Montevideo’s police readied themselves for violence and riots whatever happened. And then Castro put the game beyond doubt. Wheeling away in the 89th minute to celebrate, not many player’s careers could ever hit the spectacular high of that moment. The Maimed God had made the journey from tragically disabled child to the top of the world. Uruguay declined to defend their title in 1934, and Castro eventually retired in 1936. His tally of 108 goals makes him the 7th highest goal scorer in the history of the Uruguayan league. He finished his career with two Copa America’s to add to his Olympics and World Cup and embarked on a successful managerial career that saw him return to the national side in 1958. Enjoy the game.
