THE GAFFER I’d like to extend a warm welcome to the players, officials and supporters of Long Buckby AFC who are tonight’s visitors to the Sett for a United Counties Premier Division South fixture. Long Buckby are our closest neighbours geographically and having battled with them for promotion during the COVID seasons we know that we face a real battle this evening. With the game being on a Friday evening under the lights I am sure that will add some extra spice to the fixture, not that it is needed given these games are normally feisty affairs. Let’s hope that we’re celebrating a victory and 3 points come the end of the evening! Looking back at our last outing it was another frustrating performance along with a disappointing result as we suffered a 3-1 home reversal at the hands of Godmanchester Rovers. If we’re being honest, it’s been a disappointing run of results (4 successive defeats) since our fantastic win against Coventry United at the end of January.

Over the course of a season you take the rough with the smooth and prior to our current run we went seven games unbeaten, a run that included five wins.

As things stand, we are in a comfortable mid-table position which would have been higher had it not been for a 6-point deduction. This represents a fantastic effort considering that the aim at the start of the season was to stay up! With nine games left to play including tonight’s fixture some would say that we have little to play for however its important that we aim to finish the season on a positive note. We want to finish as high as we possibly can in the table however that won’t be easy considering that we still have Away fixtures against the top three sides, everyone loves an underdog! Anyway, thank you for your support, enjoy the game and I look forward to seeing you back at the Sett on Friday 23rd March when Desborough Town are the visitors.

TODAY’S VISITORS Formally known as Long Buckby Nomads, the current club was re-formed after the war in 1945 due to the efforts of local hairdresser Bill Ward and others. There followed many successful seasons in the Rugby and District League and the Northants Football Combination. The club was ably led at the time by the likes of Alistair Bruce, John Partridge and Jack Osbourne. It was also supported by probably the best supporters club at our level in the county, led by Doreen Timbs, Joyce Worthington and Barbara Dicks, laying the sound financial foundation for the club to progress in later years. With numerous ground improvements on the Sports Field and the beginnings of a fledgling Sports and Social Club, the Bucks gathered a strong enough squad during the 1968/69 seasons to apply and be accepted into the United Counties Football League in 1969. Manager at the time was Alan Rose who would lead the club to more honours in future years. Soon after entering the UCL he brought in Pete Smith to replace himself as manager. Under Pete Smith the club won Division 3 in 1969-70 and then won Division 2 in 1970-71 but were refused promotion due to the facilities. But they won it again in 1971-72 and this time were promoted, into the newly renamed Premier Division. Club President at the time was local businessman George Taylor of Taylor and KW Coaches. Club Secretary was Jock Morton and during that time the club extended their Sports and Social Club by building a large concert room which was opened by the President’s wife Marie Taylor. During their promotion season to the Premier Division the club also won the UCL Division 2 KO Cup, the Northants Junior Cup and the Daventry Charity Cup. Following Pete Smith was former player Dave Conlon and then Alan Rose again followed by former Northampton Town player Roly Mills. Alan then became manager of the Junior Teams, building a side which won many competitions including the Umbro Cup. Some of their games were played at Nottingham Forest where one of his players Gary Mills went on to win a European Cup Medal. Others were Mick Kurilla who went onto Birmingham City and Vince Overson who also Captained Birmingham City and Daryl White who went to Southampton. After Roly Mills, Chris Beckett took over assisted by Mick Worthington and in the 1983-4 season the club were runners up to Kettering Town in the Northants Senior Cup. The following season the Bucks were runners up in the League by one point to Arlesey Town but won the UCL KO Cup beating Baldock Town 7-3 on aggregate. When Chris left Glenn Burdett was manager for two years. Glenn was followed by our longest serving manager Mike Emms. In his nine years the Bucks only finished in the bottom half of the table once. During this time the club moved to a new pitch after the Sports field obtained more land financed by the club and the Rugby Club as well as help from the school and the District Council. Also, under Mike Emms leadership a new 200 seat stand was built as well as the playing area fenced, and the floodlights refurbished and moved. After Mike Emms left, the Bucks struggled at times to be a force in the UCL Premier Division and narrowly avoided relegation on several occasions. In January 2007 with a new Chairman Guy Loveland on board, Glenn Botterill was appointed manager who brought in former Rushden and Diamonds player Andy Peaks as his number 2. New players were brought in, and the Bucks again finished runners up in the UCL Premier Division in 2007-08. Botterill left in January 2009 and was replaced by former Northampton Town player Adam Sandy who was assisted by Matt Murphy. The Bucks then won the Northants Senior Cup beating Brackley Town 2-0. They then beat Northampton Town 3-2 in the NFA Premier Maunsell Cup in July 2009. Glenn Botterill returned as manager in January 2010 assisted by senior player Matt Green, finishing third in the league and reaching the last sixteen of the FA Vase. In 2010-11 another last sixteen in the FA Vase was achieved and a fourth-place finish in the league. Season 2011-12 saw the Bucks reach the third qualifying round of the FA Cup losing to Kidsgrove Athletic and then beating the well supported King’s Lynn Town twice to finally win the UCL Premier Division Title. The club also won the Baker Perkins FC UCL highest aggregate of goals trophy and Glenn Botterill won the UCL Manager of the season. After winning the league the Chairman and Management team left the club. The next two seasons saw Scott Goodwin and then Phil Mason keep us in the Premier League. Phil Mason then left and his assistant Dan Stewart was appointed first team manager. Unfortunately, he was unable to maintain our Premier Division status and was replaced as Manager by Richard Kay. Richard was replaced by Darren Foster in November 2017 however due to work commitments Darren was unable to continue and Dan Carter was appointed manager in July 2018. After two unfinished but successful seasons, promotion to the Premier Division was achieved. Dan left in April 2021 and

former coach Dan Gibson has become Manager assisted by Dan Elliott.

” The Mitropa Cup”

As football grew in popularity in the first half of the twentieth century, there was an appetite to not only prove the dominance of a team against their domestic rivals, but also to test themselves against the best of the European neighbours. For some, this meant leaving their home country to embark on tours – for the most successful teams, invited to tour in the Western hemisphere, it sometimes even meant withdrawing from a league campaign for a season to accommodate what were usually very lucrative playing schedules. But the friendlies played in these tours conferred only dubious bragging rights. There was a need for something bigger, something more official, where the best of the best would play against each other for more than bragging rights. The first meeting between two champions from different leagues was as early as 1895, when Hearts lost to Sunderland 5-3 in what was dubbed the World Championship. The bastion of old-World football, Austria-Hungary, followed two years later with their Challenge Cup, which pitted the champions of the nations of the empire against each other and ran for 14 years. When it was expanded into the Mitropa Cup, involving teams from across Central Europe, we had our first real inter-continental competition. The visionary behind such a competition was the legendary Austrian Manager Hugo Meisl. Alongside his on-pitch expertise, he was fluent in the business of football. Having driven the idea of professionalism in his homeland, many Austrian clubs struggled to manage the finances of professional sport, and Meisl, seeing an opportunity, began to think big. The travelling demands of a continent-wide competition were prohibitively expensive in the 1920s, but the railways in Central Europe made the possibility of a competition between teams from those nations both possible, and potentially lucrative.

Through the life of the competition, as transport links improved, they were joined by Italy, Romania, Latvia, the Soviet Union, Switzerland and even the British Mandate of Palestine, what we now know as Israel. The old empire dominated the competition between 1927 and 1940, a result of Meisl’s influence and the spread of his ideas through former players. Austria and Hungary won four cups each, Czechoslovakia three, and Italy got two through Bologna. But in 1938, Austria withdrew from the competition as their footballing structure was added to Germany’s, who had never been invited to the competition. It was a signal of what was to come, and the 1940 final was stopped because of the outbreak of war, making Ujpest of Hungary the final pre-war Mitropa Cup champions, in 1939. Following the devastation of war, football was not a priority, especially in central Europe where there had been some of the fiercest fighting, power structures has collapsed into disappearance, and a new political struggle threatened to spill over into an even more deadly war. On top of that, traditional friends and rivals now found themselves divided by an Iron Curtain, making the idea of a competition all the more difficult. But in 1951, there was an attempt to revive the Mitropa Cup as an unofficial competition under the new name of the Zentropa Cup. It was won by Rapid Vienna but proved logistically challenging, meaning another attempt was not made for four more years. ."

With it’s first iteration in 1927, the competition was a testament to the progressiveness of interwar Central Europe. Teams from Austria and Hungary, obviously, were joined by Czechoslovakians and, surprisingly, Yugoslavians. Yugoslavia had been deeply suspicious of Austria-Hungary and had subsumed Serbia, whose independence movement from the old empire was the spark that started the First World War. Sparta Prague won the initial competition, but the real success was how, through the 1930s, the Cup brought together nations across Central and Eastern Europe, at a time when the forces of fascism were determined to divide them

In 1955, the competition was restored for the long term. It was greatly reduced in prestige and importance because, at the same time, Meisl’s vision of a continent-wide competition was enacted, mostly by Spanish, French, Portuguese and Italian clubs who had outgrown their own Latin Cup. The Mitropa slipped down the pecking order of priorities as UEFA added a roster of competitions to its European schedule, but while the footballing importance of the cup diminished, the symbolic importance, I think, remained. Without the Mitropa Cup, it is difficult to imagine the Latin Cup, and the European Cup, taking the shape they did. But perhaps more importantly, the post-war Mitropa Cup was a statement that central Europe was still going, trudging on through the disaster of war and the turmoil of division.

That it survived right up until the fall of the Soviet Union is perhaps the clearest indication that it was a symbol of unity in a deeply divided world, for those who participated on either side of the curtain. Even European giants like Milan continued to enter, and the cup is every much a part of the European footballing legacy as anything else. Enjoy the game.
