THE GAFFER I’d like to extend a warm welcome to the players, officials and supporters of Godmanchester Rovers who are today’s visitors to the Sett for a United Counties Premier Division South fixture. I think I am right in saying that this will be Godmanchester’s first ever visit to the Sett; they are a good side who are one place above us in the table, so a tough game is expected. It’s our first home fixture for a couple of weeks with Easington Sports being the last fixture that we played at the Sett. It’s fair to say that we put in a disappointing performance and got what we deserved from the game which was nothing following a 2-1 defeat where the score line was closer than the game. That said this squad has character and spirit in abundance and this was on full display when we travelled to Rugby Town last weekend. Despite falling two goals behind we fought back to draw level only to have what would have been a fantastic point snatched away from us as the hosts scored what proved to be a last-minute winner. If that wasn’t bad enough it was a case of Deja-vu on Tuesday evening when we travelled to Step 3 side AFC Rushden & Diamonds for the semi-final of the Northants FA Hillier Senior Cup.
“I think I am right in saying that this will be Godmanchester’s first ever visit to the Sett; they are a good side so a tough game is expected”
In front of another large crowd the lads turned in a fantastic performance on a difficult pitch and having drawn level mid-way through the second half thanks to a fantastic free-kick from Calvin Green we were undone by a goal two minutes into the six of injury time that had been signaled!
A cruel, cruel blow with penalty kicks just minutes away. That said the boys should be proud of their efforts over the last seven days, we were the underdogs in both games however I could easily be sat here writing about a hard-earned point and a place in a Cup final, that’s the beauty of football, I guess. Anyway, thank you for your support, enjoy the game and I look forward to seeing you back at the Sett on Friday 25th February when Long Buckby AFC are the visitors.
Jamie

TODAY’S VISITORS Situated on the banks of the River Great Ouse, 16 miles North-West of Cambridge, on the A14. Godmanchester is a town, not a village as it was chartered in 1212 and again in 1604. Godmanchester has been inhabited for over 2000 years and was a very important Roman settlement. Football has been played in Godmanchester since the late 1890’s with Godmanchester Rovers coming into existence in 1911, previously playing as Godmanchester Town. The first recorded mention of the club is from the ‘Cambridge Independent Press’ newspaper dated Friday 26th December 1913 where Godmanchester Rovers had a fixture against St-Ives on Boxing Day. During the 1928–29 season, when they won the Hunts Junior Cup. They played in the Huntingdonshire League for many years before joining the Cambridgeshire League. They won the Hunts Junior Cup again in 1988–89, and in 1992 were promoted to the top division of the Cambridgeshire League. In 1994–95 they won the League Cup, retaining it for the next two seasons. However, they were relegated to the Senior Division in 2000. With the club about to move into a new ground, they made a speculative application to join the Eastern Counties League in 2002. Despite being in the second tier of the Cambridgeshire League, the club were successful. In 2011–12 the club won the Eastern Counties Division One on goal difference to earn promotion to the Premier Division, also winning the Division One Knock-out Cup, defeating Whitton United 1–0 in the final. After securing Premiership football for the 2017-2018 season it was marred by a large number of postponed games creating a large backlog of matches to be played, due to severe weather, notably ‘The Beast From The East’ and heavy rain. After a slow start results started to improve with the return of a number of players that departed at the end of the 2016-2017 which helped earn a respectable 4th place.
During the season break work was undertaken to add further drainage to the pitch to elevate potential postponed matches. The 2018-2019 season saw the retention of the majority of the playing squad from the previous season and despite a strong winning run of pre-season matches and a win in the FA Cup Extra Preliminary round, Rovers lost their opening League match but bounced back with a FA Cup win in the next game. This was the start of pattern that Godmanchester had throughout the season, strong performances in Cup games but mixed in League. As we all know the 2019-2020 ended abruptly, however this allowed the club to work on and allow the pitch to have a long recovery. Hopefully that work has paid off and the pitch is a little more resilient to heavy rainfall. As with the 2019-2020 season and Covid-19, 2020 -21 started with no spectators and just 9 games played before the season was ended and nulled. The club took the opportunity whilst the ground was void of any sport and spectators to embark on several ground improvements and renovations. The biggest undertaking was a large expansion on the Club House, adding a new larger kitchen for match day refreshments and larger patio area. Before the start of the 2021-22, First Team manager, Ollie Drake departed the club making way for Dean Greygoose to take charge with a fresh squad of players.

George Whitehall (GK) – Cambridge United pro on loan to us, this lad is a beast in the goal, we had the chance of him last season and let him slip through our fingers, safe hand’s. Jamie Greygoose (GK) – 28, too pretty to be a goalkeeper, should off been a model instead, only gets in the squad as he is dad is the gaffer! last club Bedford Town FC. Best goalkeeper around. Reece King – winger now turned right full back with and absolute worm foot, one of the senior players now in the squad coming into his 5th season with us and he has spent the majority of them years being shouted at by Errol.
Richard Chadwick – Senior member of the team with great experience, versatile forward with over 200+ goals at this level, good in the air and a great left foot, also can put a shift in at the back. Isaac Moss – 19, hardworking ginger centre back, won’t shy away from a challenge! some people say he looks like the Sherminator from American Pie. Jack Dickerson – 20, very talent young left back that started out at Royston Town in the youth teams then moved onto Yaxley FC last season to get first team action and now looking to carry that on at Godmanchetser and become a fans favourite.
Ross Munro - Box to box midfield magician, probably would have made it pro if it wasn’t for a bad knee injury, should still be playing at least two leagues higher we’re lucky to have him as a club. Michael King – 27 years old with a body of a 40-year-old, had a tough paper round. Centre midfielder who loves a Hollywood pass. Previously played for Kettering Town, Hitchin, Biggleswade Town, Kings Langley, Cambridge City and Haverhill Borough. Simon Unwin (Captain) – What can you say about this lad, true leader on and off the pitch, was vice captain last season and has stepped up to captain the team this season, now one of the most senior players in the squad, midfield machine that don’t stop working from box to box. Captain Unners.
ROVERS Daniel Baulk – the younger version of his brother on the opposite wing, 20 played for Royston Town FC from U6 all the way to the first team, mainly played in their Reserves set up. This lad only has the mentality of winning and wants to improve daily and weekly. Matthew Allan – 23, 3rd season with the club and one of the senior players now, very talented striker / forward, quick, direct and loves scoring goals. Credit to the club and fans favourite. Michael Baulk – 21 young flying winger, played for Royston Town FC from U6 all the way to the first team, made a handful of appearances and went on loan to Soham for a season, came back to Royston playing for the reserves. Attacking winger who likes to get crosses into the box and shots on goal. Alfie Warman – another solid young centre back, don’t like using his head but loves to play the ball out with his feet. Jamie Judge – 20, a young striker from Royston Town and Haverhill Rovers, a big number 9, who will run the channels all day and loves winning headers, big powerful beast upfront. Jamie Short – New addition to our squad this season, young centre back from the local area, we are delighted to have him and look forward to what he will bring to our team. CJ Lewis – young flying winger, my go to meal is beans on toast can never go wrong with that really, my best quality is my pace going forward and getting at players and entertaining the crowd. Lawrence Hammond – 20, young winger/striker from the local colts football scene, came through the Godmanchester youth set up, was sucked in by the St Neots Dream then ended up pro for Leighton Orient, before coming back home to Godmanchester, This young lad hates running just ask Errol…. Poquena Junior Augusto – one of the very talented U18 players who have stepped up to the first team, who likes to go forward and express himself with skill, pace and very direct, creates lots of opportunities and is very clinical. Kian Harness – 18 young centre mid, came through the U18’s program within the club, very talented young man, suffered with injury in preseason and look forward to getting him back on the pitch ASAP. Jamie Short - 20 young centre back from the local area, good strong in the air just very quiet on the pitch, Jamie is in his first season with us.
Mohammed Akhtar – 20 very young ex Peterborough United youth player, winger who likes to try and take his man on, is direct and quick. Jordan Slama – centre mid who likes to pass and move the ball quick, you allow this player time, and he will unlock you like a locksmith.

” The Forgotten International ”
Laurie Cunningham is often held up as England’s first black international. I have even made the claim myself twice over the course of this month. But, through some interesting record keeping by the FA, and the lack of a professional career of note, it turns out that this claim is incorrect. You would think such a historically significant event would be well known and, although not many would have seen the first black England international at any level, you might expect the name to be remembered. Instead, Benjamin Odeje – to be clear, the man who really was England’s first black player – is largely forgotten. Laurie Cunningham’s England Under 21 debut came in 1977. Viv Anderson got the senior call in 1978. But at the start of that decade, in front of 70,000 fans, Odeje wore the Three Lions. In 1971, he helped England Schoolboys to a 1-0 win over Northern Ireland, but his story has been eclipsed by others. Born in Nigeria in 1951, Odeje was raised South-East London after the family moved to England, where he displayed an outrageous natural talent in the penalty area. His prowess quickly alerted the attention of Charlton Athletic, whose youth sides Odeje joined, and he started scoring for fun. 400 goals followed in the three seasons leading to his big night out, and Odeje is proud of that record, though the exact number is something of a mystery to him. “I would score for the fun of it. I don’t know how many goals there were but whoever managed to ascertain those figures, please leave it there!” His form for Charlton caught the eye of the England selectors, and in 1971, Odeje made his debut on the biggest stage of his career. His father was concerned that the significant publicity that coalesced around his son would stand him out as “a marked man”, someone for his Northern Irish opponents to single out and target. His father’s nerves were piled up further by the announcement that he would be played out of position, wide on the right. Not that Odeje felt the pressure much at all. “The mere fact that I didn’t realise I was making history; all I wanted as a player was to play football…I remember standing in the tunnel, and the band was still playing. My knees were knocking and if you'd given me the choice to forget it I probably would have, I was so nervous."
He helped the schoolboys to a 1-0 and returned to Charlton, where he resumed his prolific form. One of the highlights of his burgeoning career, so promising that he was nicknamed Pele, was meeting the great Brazilian in 1973. Or being in the vicinity of him at least. Santos visited Craven Cottage for a friendly against Fulham, and Odeje made sure he was in prime position to see his hero play. As the great man left the field, the starstruck youngster was able to lay a hand on him, for the briefest of moments, but that was enough. “I didn’t wash my hands for days!” he recalls. Odeje’s planned future fell apart not long after that chance meeting. He had been dropped, unceremoniously, from England’s schoolboys, but such was the surprise at the decision that one London teacher resigned in protest, and he was reinstated for a further four games, scoring against the Netherlands. His Charlton form continued apace, and the South London Pele looked to have the footballing world laid out before him. So, it was a shock when, following a starring role in the 1972/3 FA Youth Cup, Odeje was released without making an appearance for the first team. Odeje was shocked at the decision but doesn’t resent the club. “My days at Charlton were time well spent but not as lucrative or as positive as I would have wanted.” As with many released youngsters, he still tried to make his way in the game. But he failed to pick up a contract at a professional club, and spells in non-league beckoned around London, before the England schoolboy took up a role as a PE teacher, as well as a coaching position at Queens Park Rangers. He continued in the role for a quarter of a century, and now runs a football school in Queens Park, aimed at helping children who struggle in a more traditional educational environment. His impact off the field has probably been far greater than his impact on in, but his place in history is assured.
The question still remains; just how did Odeje get lost to the collective memory of English football?
“We can confirm Benjamin Odeje was the first black player to represent England at any level."
In the 1970s, the schoolboys played under the auspices of the English Schools Football Association, a different organisation to the FA, who have since taken over the running of all of the national teams. In the confused record keeping of two huge organisations, Odeje seems to have just fallen through the cracks. Fortunately, that has now been rectified. In 2013 a spokesman for the FA released a statement, making Odeje’s claim to fame a matter of record:
Take that, Laurie Cunningham! Enjoy the game.
