THE GAFFER I’d like to extend a warm welcome to the players, officials and supporters of Lutterworth Town who are tonight’s visitors to the Sett for a United Counties Premier Division South fixture. We go into this evening’s fixture following back-to-back postponements meaning that it’s been almost a month since we last kicked a ball in anger! I am hoping that the lads are raring to go, they will need to be against a strong Lutterworth side albeit one that has struggled for consistency of late. As I am sure you will have seen I will be leaving the Sett at the end of the current season. I've had 4 fantastic years as First Team Manager at Bugbrooke St Michaels and I would like to thank everyone that has been on the journey with me. Having picked up the reins with the team close to the foot of Division 1 I will be leaving with the club comfortable at Step 5, this is something that I can, and will look back on with immense pride.

I will be leaving the club in a healthy position with a lot of young talent coming through however now feels the right time for a fresh challenge and with that comes a new face to lead the club forward. In the meantime, I will be doing all that I can to ensure that we finish the season on a high, as with sixteen games left there’s still plenty to play for including the potential of a place in the Northants FA Senior Cup Final. Anyway, thank you for your support, enjoy the game and I look forward to seeing you back at the Sett on Saturday 29 th January when Easington Sports are the visitors.

TODAY’S VISITORS Lutterworth Town joined Division Two of the Leicestershire Senior League in 1955. In 1966–1967 they finished second and subsequently promoted to Division One. The club won the Premier Division in 1990–1991, after which they moved from their Dunley Way ground to Coventry Road.

The club were relegated again at the end of the 1994– 1995 season. Despite only finishing eleventh in 1996–1997 they were promoted to the Premier Division. They returned to Division One after finishing bottom of the Premier Division in 1999–2000.

The club returned to Dunley Way, their original home for the 2012/2013 season and continued with bottom half to midtable finishes until the 2015/2016 where they were promoted to the Premier Division once again.

2016/2017 season became the clubs most successful season in their 62-year history after winning the Leicestershire Senior League unbeaten resulting in promotion to step 6 of the national league system for the first time ever. 2018/2019 season the club achieved promotion to the United Counties Premier division, the highest level the club has ever been, by winning the division one league in a closely contested final few weeks. In the FA Competitions, the club has appeared in the FA Cup for the first time during the 2018-2019 season progressing to the preliminary round The club has appeared 6 times in the FA Vase with the highest round progressed being the First Round in the 2017/2018 season HONOURS United Counties League Division 1 Winners 2019/2019 Leicestershire Senior League Premier Division 1991/92, 2016/17

Congratulations to Newport Pagnell Town, Coventry Sphinx and Rugby Town who flew the flag for the UCL South and made it through to the last 16 of the FA Vase at the weekend.

Loughborough Students are the sole survivors from the UCL North in the Vase, they made the last 16 following a 6-5 win on penalties after their tie against Saffron Walden Town ended in a 1-1 draw.

In the league Biggleswade United picked up a huge 3 points against relegation rivals ON Chenecks thanks to an 86th minute goal from Charlie Black, a result that lifts Biggleswade out of the bottom two for the first time this season.

Its as you were in the league standings although leaders Long Eaton United were made to work hard for the points, seeing off lowly Sleaford 2-1.

It was fifth vs sixth at the Dog & Duck and it was the hosts Wellingborough Town who came out on top courtesy of a 3-0 win against Coventry United. Elsewhere there were wins for Desboroiugh Town (2-0 vs Potton United) and Long Buckby AFC (2-1 vs Godmanchester Rovers), whilst the games between Lutterworth Town and GNG Oadby and Rothwell Corinthians and Eynesbury ended in draws

Gresley Roovers remain on their coat tails although they too were made to work for the points, a 3-1 half time advantage ended in a 4-3 win for the hosts against Melton Town. Anstey Nomads are not out of it and could be one to watch coming up on the rails, their latest outing ending in a 4-2 win over Leicester Nirvana. At the other end its as you were with two from Pinchbeck United, Selston and Holbeach United likely to end the season in the bottom two.

Reserve Division Taylor Holland was the hero as second placed Harborough Town won a dramatic game against lowly Irchester United. Down to 10-men it took a 91st minute winner to secure a 3-2 win, a result that closes the gap at the top to just 2 points albeit Bugbrooke St Michaels have a game in hand. The shock of the day came at Cogenhoe where the mid-table hosts secured a 3-0 home win against high flying Kempston Rovers. There were goals aplenty at Huntingdon where the hosts piled more misery on struggling Raunds Town, running out convincing 7-0 winners. There were also wins for Wellingborough Whitworths and Newport Pagnell Town whilst the games at GNG Oadby Town (vs Wellingborough Town) and Milton Keynes Irish (vs Bourne Town) both ended in 2-2 draws.

”When Africa boycotted the Word Cup”

The African Cup of Nations began this week, and with it the biennial round of complaints that the premium competition, on the world’s biggest continent, takes some of the best players in the world away from their European club teams, right in the middle of the season. These complaints usually go hand-in-hand with suggestions that AFCON moves to the summer, in line with the majority of European domestic schedules, regardless of the summer heat (Tunisia holds the record highest temperature of 55C…). But the way in which European football people attempt to dictate the beautiful game to Africa has a long history, and every so often, Africa fights back. So it was that the entire continent boycotted the World Cup.

1966 is, obviously, most famous in this country for England’s sole World Cup victory. Second is probably North Korea’s win over Italy. But look closer at the results, at the groups, at the list of top scorers, and you will notice a distinct lack of any African representation. Given the discrimination against them by FIFA, the federations of the entire continent banded together. Their demands were by no means excessive. But when they were denied, their single qualifying team, Ghana, decided to boycott the competition. In January 1964, FIFA decided on the makeup of the World Cup to be hosted in England and informed the continental federations of their qualifying places. Ten teams would qualify from Europe, obviously including the hosts, and four from South America. One place was awarded to Central America and the Caribbean who made up a joint qualification region. Which left one final place, which would be contested by a playoff between the champions of Africa, Asia, and Oceania. The African champions were likely to be Ghana, who had dominated the continent in the early 1960s, and whose star striker Osei Kofi was compared to George Best by none other than England goalkeeper Gordon Banks. And for a side as strong as they seemed to be, having to playoff to earn a place at the World Cup was worse than a slight. It was an insult. As it happened, Ghana’s Ohane Djan, Director of Sport, was on the FIFA executive committee. By February of 1964 he (along with Ethiopian Tessema Yidnekatchew) had put together a concerted, unified response from CAF. They didn’t mince their words.

“Registering strong objection to unfair World Cup arrangement for Afro-Asian countries… Afro-Asian countries struggling through painful expensive qualifying series for ultimate one finalist representation is pathetic and unsound… At the worst, Africa should have one finalist. Urgent – reconsider.” There were a number of political issues at play in the determined tone that Djan took with FIFA. Firstly, Ghana was the first sub-Saharan nation to declare its independence from the European empires, and President Kwame Nkrumah was clear in his mission to Djan that football could be used to put the nation, and the continent, on the map. Secondly, CAF was the first pan-African organisation, even predating the political entities that would spring up soon afterward, so football unity was, if anything, much stronger than political unity. And third, there was South Africa. CAF had taken the decision to expel South Africa from the African footballing federation in 1960 due to apartheid. It was a strong anti-racism gesture for a continent just beginning to find itself in the post-colonial era. FIFA initially followed suit, barring South Africa from competition in 1961. But they readmitted them in 1963 after a – frankly unbelievable – promise from the apartheid regime that they would send an all white team to the 1966 World Cup, and an all black team to the 1970 competition. That Sir Stanley Rous, President of FIFA, accepted this argument is damning. That he genuinely believed such a move would promote inclusivity and diversity is outrageously naïve. Having been expelled from CAF, South Africa clearly couldn’t partake in the African World Cup Qualifying competition, so FIFA moved them into the Asian competition. This was designed to ensure that they would not have to play against any representative of CAF and to, theoretically, keep some sort of fragile peace. Except, obviously, there was a chance that they would meet in the playoff. It was too much for CAF, and a boycott was threatened. Djan made the point that the qualifying place could come from the European team's places without much hurt to that continent, as well as arguing that African football had progressed to such an extent that they deserved an automatic qualification place. Rous and FIFA played hardball and refused their demands.

Over 100 teams that took part in qualifying from Africa, Asia and Oceania in the most recent competitions, but Africa made good on their threat and boycotted in 1966. With a number of Asian representatives withdrawing for financial reasons (including, ironically, South Africa), all three continents combined offered just two participants for qualification. Australia lost 9-2 to a well organised North Korea side, who would be a PR godsend for their new nation. It was frankly embarrassing for FIFA. The World Cup itself didn’t help their cause. North Korea beat Italy to show that the smaller nations from the unfancied federations could progress in the competition, and they lost to the other debutants, Portugal, in the Quarter Finals. Portugal, for their part, contained a strong contingent from Mozambique, including golden boot winner Eusebio. Without colonialism, he would have boycotted the competition as well.

By 1968, FIFA had caved and given in to the African demands, granting the continent an automatic qualification place. And they gave one to Asia for good measure. The boycott worked, and the largest continent in the world has had representation at every world cup since. Enjoy the game.
