THE GAFFER I’d like to start by wishing everyone a happy New Year!

Despite the on-going pandemic I hope that you all had the opportunity to enjoy time with family and friends during the Christmas break. I’d also like to extend a warm welcome to the players, officials and supporters of Desborough Town who are today’s visitors to the Sett for a United Counties Premier Division South fixture. We go into today’s game on the back of an excellent run of results that saw us end December with a 100% record which gained us the Team of the Month award for the United Counties League Premier Division South, something that we are all extremely proud of! Starting the month with an away win over high flying Wellingborough Town we followed this up with a home success against Potton United before ending the year with back-to-back away wins against Rothwell Corinthians and Long Buckby AFC.

Despite ending 2021 on a high we won’t be resting on our laurels as we start the new year with a tough run of fixtures starting with today’s game against a Desborough side who themselves picked up a comprehensive win on Monday. We then play three of the top seven sides including a trip to unbeaten league leaders Hinckley LRFC before ending the month with a home game against another mid-table side in Easington Sports. Considering our recent form and position of relative comfort in the league table we should approach these games without fear, we have nothing to lose! Anyway, thank you for your support, enjoy the game and I look forward to seeing you back at the Sett on Tuesday 18 th January when Lutterworth Town are the visitors.

TODAY’S VISITORS Desborough Town have a remarkable history since it was formed in 1896 and joined the Northants League which is now known as the United Counties League. It has been a continual member of that combination apart from Season 1945/46 when the club had not been reformed following the break for the second world war. The club was first affiliated to the Northants Football Association in 1896 with the Secretary being Mr A.L Mobbs the landlord of the Swan Inn which used to stand in Lower Street. The club has always played its home matches at the Waterworks Field and in the early days used to change in the outbuildings at the back of the Swan Inn before marching up the Braybrooke Road to the ground. The second season saw the Formation of Northampton Town and the Cobblers first ever League game was played at the Waterworks Field on 25th September 1897 with Ar Tarn triumphing by two clear goals It was at this period that Desborough inherited the nicknames that are not forgotten with the passing of time. ‘Ar Tarn’ the local dialect meaning our town has probable survived the longest ‘The Buckets’ is a reference to the adjacent waterworks and was used by the local newspaper’s licensed crank in his reports on the Desborough matches at the time. The most infamous of them all was ‘Dirty Desborough’ which had no reference to the team at all and were remarks made by a visiting medical officer referring to the town’s poor sanitation.

Success on the field came quickly to the Desborough Town team and in season 1900/01 they captured the Northants League title for the very first time. There was a double celebration in the town as the club also captured the Northants Junior Cup beating Northampton Town Reserves in the Final Desborough’s first glory in the F.A Cup came in season 1910/11 when they reached the Fourth Qualifying Round of the competition before losing to Midland League Champions Chesterfield at the Waterworks Field before a crowd of over 2000 spectators. Chesterfield went on to beat Rotherham and Bolton before eventually losing to Chelsea. Desborough’s best run in the competition was reserved for season 1926/27 when they reached the first-round proper of the competition and were drawn at home to Doncaster Rovers. The joy which swept the town was short lived however when the committee decided that the gate would be severely reduced by the fact that Kettering were playing Coventry City in another tie just six miles away and the game was switched to Doncaster’s Belle Vue ground. This proved to be a disastrous decision as many of the town's spectators claimed they had been robbed of the greatest game ever to be staged at the Waterworks Field and deserted the club. As a result, the club soon found itself with financial problems and the glory years of the twenties were not to be repeated. As for the game itself Desborough were drawing with just eight minutes remaining when the match was abandoned through fog and in the midweek replay, they went down by three clear goals. The twenties were certainly the glory years for Desborough Town as they captured trophy after trophy and on only two occasions in 1949 and 1967 have, they been able to top the league chart since. However, whilst they may not have had so much success on the field the progress behind the scenes has certainly been tremendous. They have purchased the freehold of the ground allowing them a secure future, they have erected the best floodlighting system in the league and more recently have erected a first-class social club following the destruction of their original premises through fire in 2009 and in 2014 the club rebuilt the changing facilities. The transfer of the cricket club to a new ground has now seen the club in total control of their premises with full training facilities next to the main pitch

With Newport Pagnell Town suffering a 3-1 defeat at the hands of mid-table Cogenhoe United on Bank Holiday Monday the title race looks to be a sprint to the finish between Hinckley LRFC and Harborough Town.

Results over the Christmas period mean that leaders Long Eaton go into the new year with a 9-point advantage over second-placed Gresley Rovers albeit the latter have two games in hand.

Hinckley LRFC remain unbeaten although had to come from behind to pick up a point against Coventry United in front of a crowd of almost 300.

With Long Eaton’s Bank Holiday fixture postponed first half goals from Steve Hart and Ryan Seal secured Gresley Rovers a hard fought 2-1 win against Heather St Johns who replied late through James Spruce.

With Hinckley LRFC dropping points and boosted by the signing of Tendai Daire Harborough Town took full advantage as they closed the gap at the top back to 3 points following a 3-0 win against Rothwell Corinthians. Elsewhere there were Bank Holiday wins for Rugby Town (31 vs Coventry Sphinx), Desborough Town (5-1 vs Oadby), Easington Sports (5-0 vs Long Buckby AFC), Potton United (2-1 vs Eynesbury Rovers) and Wellingborough Town (2-1 vs ON Chenecks).

With bumper crowds of 200+ at most venues the game of the day was at Newark where the hosts fought back from a goal down to lead 2-1 against Melton Town only for the visitors to score in the 84th and 90th minutes to take the points – former professional Paul Anderson scoring twice for the visitors. At the bottom end of the table Holbeach United picked up a welcome point, only their third of the season, however despite this they remain 10 points adrift of the safety line.

Reserve Division With no fixtures in the Reserve Division over the festive period and two fixtures postponed and several other teams involved in County Cup fixtures there was a limited programme before the Christmas break.

Bugbrooke St Michaels went into the break holding an 8-point cushion over second placed Harborough Town; a 6-1 home win against Newport Pagnell Town whilst Harborough were in-active drawing the team’s level on games played heading into this weekends first vs second encounter. Elsewhere there were wins for Wellingborough Town (6-1 vs Whitworths), ON Chenecks (6-1 vs Raunds Town), Rothwell Corinthians (1-0 vs Irchester United) and Cogenhoe United (3-1 vs GNG Oadby Town)

”Who ate all the pies?”

“Who ate all the pies?” is a familiar chant around football grounds, directed at any footballer who happens to be a little larger, more sluggish, or slower than you might reasonably expect of a sportsman. Of course, in many cases, it’s a nonsense – I can quite happily admit that every player I’ve ever chanted it at is almost certainly fitter than I am – but the chant has lingered for over a century. The question is, where did it start, and who was the unfortunate player about whom it was created? That poor soul, although he would never call himself that, was Willie Foulke, who also carried the nickname “Fatty”. Through his career in the North-East and London around the turn of the last century, he was a colossal figure. The goalkeeper stood at 6’4, at a time when the average height was just 5’8, and at the end of his career weighed 24 stone, a frankly unbelievable figure for a professional sportsman. Foulke started his career with his local side in Shropshire, Blackwell Miners Welfare. Weighing much less than his final total – something closer to 14 stone – the 19-year-old was already gaining attention for his height, and for the quality of his performances, when Football League side Derby County sent a team for a friendly. Foulkes drew considerable headlines, not just for his performance between the sticks, but also because when he came off of his line to punch a ball clear, he connected with England forward John Goodall, an assault that has been described as “amateur dentistry”. Whether because of his previous performances, or his violence against one of their rivals, it was enough for Sheffield United to confirm their interest in him. Foulkes moved to South Yorkshire in 1904 for the princely sum of £20. Foulke’s stature and ability made him one of the first real superstars of English football. Ernest Needham, who at the time was considered the greatest half back of all time, described his teammate as the best goalkeeper he had ever seen. Sheffield United fans were certainly inclined to agree, as his arrival at the club spurred The Blades on to a period at the very top of English football, competing with the likes of Preston and Aston Villa for top honours, and providing internationals to the England side on a regular basis – Foulke would gain his only cap in 1897. He was reported as being able to stop and catch the ball with one hand, “in the same way a fielder in the slips stops a ball at cricket” and earned the ironic nickname of “Little Willie”, one that would also follow him on his career, though “Fatty” remained far more common.

Foulke played one shy of 300 league games for Sheffield United over the course of a decade at the club, which saw them win the league title once and finish runners up twice, as well as adding two FA Cup victories to their record. Foulke was key through all of it and holds the second highest number of honours of any player at The Blades – only Needham won more at Bramall Lane.

More than his honours though, Foulke’s legend grew at Sheffield United, with anecdotal stories highlighting his tempestuous nature and his voracious appetite, turning him into a cult hero even before cult heroes were really considered. Before an away game, he is said to have gone down for a morning meal at the hotel Sheffield United were staying at and ended up eating 11 full breakfasts. Which might explain how his waistline grew along with his status among fans. Another time, after conceding a controversial late equaliser against Southampton, Foulke is said to have stormed out of the shower, naked and dripping, and into the referee’s room. The official hid in a cupboard to try to save himself from the gigantic, naked goalkeeper threatening him, but to no avail. Foulke ripped the door of the cupboard off and told the referee exactly what he thought of his performance. Of course, all good things come to an end, and in 1905 his time at Sheffield United ended. But that wasn’t the end of Foulke’s playing career, although he had grown considerably in size since making his League debut a decade earlier. Plenty of clubs wanted him, but one was newly-formed and trying to get noticed, so they offered Foulke the opportunity to move to London on (for the time) high wages. Foulke liked the idea of being a big fish in a little pond – and he was always the biggest fish – and so agreed, moving to Chelsea. Owners and founders Gus and Joseph Mears got exactly what they wanted from Foulke and knew how to use him. It wasn’t his ability that they were after – although he was still a competent goalkeeper – it was his legend. The marketing machine went into overdrive, and fans flocked to Stamford Bridge to catch a glimpse of the behemoth in goal. The Mears’ even starting placing children behind his goal, to emphasise just how big he was. Of course, through the game they happily collected and returned any shots that were fired wide of Foulke’s goal, and thus ball boys were introduced to English football. Chelsea established themselves on the colossal shoulders of William Foulke.

“Fatty” lasted just one year in the capital before the lure of the north was too much for him, and he moved back to Yorkshire, this time to Bradford City. He played 22 times, but eventually picked up an injury and called it quits on his career. He spent his last few years in Sheffield where he owned a shop and a beer house and would often be seen walking around the city in tailor-made suits with an FA Cup winner’s medal around his neck. He died of liver disease at just 42, in 1916. Ironically, given the chant for which he is known, “who ate all the pies?” was probably never sung at him, and possibly never about him. Of all the crazy, legendary stories about “Fatty”, this most famous one is the least likely, or at least most provably wrong, of all of them. The tune that the chant is set to – “Knees Up Mother Brown” – was initially sung in 1918, two years after his death. But who doesn’t like a good story? Enjoy the game.
