THE GAFFER I’d like to start by extending a warm welcome to the players, officials and supporters of Potton United who are today’s visitors to the Sett for a United Counties Premier Division South fixture.

We go into today’s game following back-toback away games with last weeks excellent 2-1 win against Wellingborough Town preceded by the reverse fixture against today’s opponents with the game played in difficult weather conditions ending in a 2-2 draw. Those 4 points made it 16 points from our last 8 league fixtures, an excellent return and one that has seen us move into a far more comfortable and deserved mid-table position Looking ahead, including today’s game we now move into a period of fixtures where we are playing teams that are below us in the league table. We need to remain confident however its important that we don’t get ahead of ourselves and underestimate the opposition, every game will be hard fought, there are not easy points at this level. Since I last wrote we have discovered that AFC Rushden & Diamoonds will provide the opposition in the Northants FA Hillier Senior Cup Semi-Final with the tie to be played on Tuesday 8th February.

With Diamonds, Brackley Town and Peterborough Sports left in the competition there were no easy ties, that said a home draw would have been nice! Anyway, thank you for your support, enjoy the game, and I hope that you have a fantastic Christmas and New Year! I look forward to seeing you back at the Sett on Saturday 8th January when Desborough Town are the visitors.

1943 - Club formed during wartime. 1945 - When peace broke out the Club joined the South Midlands League. The first matches were played at The Recreation Ground in Sandy Road. 1947 - A group of local volunteers prepared the present ground at The Hollow, renting the ground from the Land Settlement Association. Won Bedfordshire Senior Cup. 1948 - Entered the FA Cup and in First Qualifying Round beat Stewartby Works 6-1 away, which is still our highest score in this competition. Reached second Qualifying Round before losing 3-1 at Hitchin Town in a replay. Won Bedfordshire Senior Cup. 1961 - Joined the United Counties League. 1969 - Lost 10-0 away to Cambridge United in the FA Cup (which is still our heaviest defeat in this competition). 1973 - Our landlords, The Land Settlement Association wanted to sell the ground and our President, Peter Hutchinson, bought the ground and gave the club a 99-year lease at a peppercorn rent. Won League Knock Out Cup beating Bedford Eagles in the final. 1977 - Floodlights installed. 1984 - Old dressing rooms (including communal bath) and clubroom was knocked down and replaced by the current clubhouse and dressing room. Potton Sports & Social Club formed, which comprised Potton United FC, Potton Town CC and Potton Timber Ltd Sports Club. 1987 - Won first League title when they were unbeaten on their travels. 1988 - New wooden stand built. Finished fourth in League. 1989 - Won League title for second time and Ray Seekings scored a record 56 goals. 1990 - Reached the Fifth Round of the FA Vase before losing 3-1 away to Billericay in front of a crowd of 1000 plus. 1997 - Participated in 6 Cup Finals winning four of them. Finished fourth in Premier Division. 2001 - Relegated to Division One after third consecutive season in a relegation place. 2003 - Wooden stand destroyed by fire. To mark the Club’s 60th Anniversary the Club played Rushden & Diamonds X1 that consisted mainly of youth players in front of a crowd of 450. Finished sixth in Division One. 2004 - A storming campaign saw the Royals winning the Division One title with 80 points! 2006 - Finished runners-up again, this time to Woodford United on goal difference. Roy Bloxham replaced Ian Donnelly as Manager and also bringing back Dick Newman as Assistant. 2007 - Finished fourth in League and lost on penalties in Final of League Knock Out Cup to Boston Town. 2008 - After finishing our league programme early in April we had a nervous wait for other clubs to finish their programme of matches and escaped relegation by one point. 2009 - Finished second from bottom in the Premier Division, and under instructions from the FA to the UCL the club were relegated to the Division One as the ground did not come up to the required standards. July 2009 - Manager Dean Shipp resigned and Tom Galvin and Declan Milton were appointed Joint Managers. 2014-15 - Application for grant for new floodlights has been granted and new floodlights being installed. Small Spectator Stand being installed 2017-18 - The club runs an under 18 team for only the second time in the clubs history, which was entered in the Northants Senior Youth League. The 1st team go on a great run in February/March which sees them finish as runners up and promoted back to Step 5 of the football pyramid. 2018-19 - The FA laterally moved the 1st team to the Spartan South Midlands League but the reserves remain in the UCL. The 1st team finished a creditable 7th place in the league and made the final of the league challenge trophy. Steve Kuhne resigns at the end of the season and Laurence Revell returns to the club as manager. 2019-20 - Jimmy Martin joins management team as coach then takes over when Revell resigns in February. Reached final of Bedfordshire Senior Cup but the season was abandoned in March due to global pandemic Coronavirus. 2020-21 - another season abandoned due to Coronavirus. In May the club were advised they would be laterally moved back to the UCL. An unsuccessful appeal means we will be heading north for all our league fixtures.

AROUND THE UCL Premier Division South

Its fast becoming a three-horse race in the South Division with Newport Pagnell Town hanging onto the coat tails of the two big guns, their 4-1 win over Godmanchester Rovers last time out making it nine successive league wins. Above them it was business as usual for Hinckley LRFC and Harborough Town who both picked up wins, 2-0 vs Rothwell Corinthians and 5-1 vs Eynesbury Rovers respectively. The result of the day came at Long Buckby where a goal from former Badger Ryan Ansell helped his side to a 1-0 success against high flying Lutterworth Town. With Peterborough Northern Star having folded the league table has been adjusted which means that ON Chenecks find themselves above the dotted line albeit level on points with Biggleswade United who have two games in hand.

Leaders Long Eaton made the trip to Loughborough Students and returned with the points (3-0) recording an eighth successive league winning to move 8 points clear of Gresley Rovers who themselves picked up a 51 win on the road against mid-table Leicester Nirvana. At the opposite end of the table winless Holbeach United lost another manager following a 6-0 home reversal against Newark, and with just 2 points from their opening 16 fixtures a remarkable turnaround is required if they are to beat the drop. Elsewhere there were wins for Quorn, Anstey Nomads, Melton Town, Heather St. Johns, Sleaford and Boston with Melton making it back-to-back wins as they brushed aside Eastwood in mid-week.

Reserve Division With Kempston Rovers Friday night fixture postponed we took full advantage by

defeating third placed Harborough Town to move back to the top of the table – as the weeks go by it’s looking increasingly like a 3-horse race however the chasing pack of Wellingborough Town, GNG Oadby, Newport Pagnell, Whitworths and MK Irish will still have a say in the destination of the title.

Improving Wellingborough Whitworths fresh from being awarded the team of the month for November continued their fine form picking up a 3-2 win against another improving side in Cogenhoe United. At the bottom of the Division Raunds Town and Daventry Town have been cut adrift with their cumulative points total of eight being three less than 16th placed Irchester United who picked up an excellent 1-1 draw from their trip to Bourne Town.

”Schalke’s Nazi Past?”

Schalke have had it tough of late. They are staving off a financial crisis with an extremely restrictive self-imposed wage cap. They got through five head coaches last season, picking up just three wins and 16 points as the club hurtled toward it’s first relegation for three decades. And now, as the biggest club in the Bundesliga 2, they are struggling to find the kind of form that could see a return to the top. The Royal Blues have 155,000 members, making it the fourth biggest sports club in the world, and they are all at the lowest ebb for a considerable time. But there was a time when they dominated German football. A decade in which they didn’t lose a single home game and went unbeaten through six seasons. Six national championships coincided with those years, and their players were held as national heroes. It was also a period, 193345, in which the Nazis held power in Germany. Leading to some questions. When Schalke won the championship in 1939, their fourth in six years, with a colossal 9-0 triumph over Admira Vienna, the moment was captured in an iconic photograph. The players, walking toward the camera as they celebrate, are embracing each other with huge smiles on their faces. What almost goes unnoticed are the two players – Otto Schweiswurth and Walter Berg – have huge, dominating eagles on the front of their shirt. This was the Reichsadler, a Nazi symbol. The eagle stands on the much more familiar Swastika. Football has been used for political purposes throughout its existence. It’s popularity made winning the World Cup a key aim of Benito Mussolini. Franco chose Real Madrid as his team and ensured their dominance in Spain and the early years of the European Cup. Even our own government, who had criticised the national side when it suited it them, performed a whiplash-inducing U-turn to support them when they reached the final of Euro 2020. And the Nazis were no exception. First football was Nazified – all traces of Jewishness and ‘undesirables’ were purged from clubs – and then the sport was presented with strict rules that supported the values of the Nazi Party and projected the desired image of the German volk. Schalke became poster boys for the most murderous regime in history.

Schalker Kreisel, or Spinning Top style of football, a quick passing game that was at odds with the physicality of 1920s German football, and by the 1930s was reaping big rewards. He was also the beneficiary of the Nazi decision to remove Jewish business owners, taking over a drapers shop after its owner was hounded out. He publicly proclaimed his support for Hitler, arguing that “We should show our loyalty to our Führer, because he fought for us.” And he was the captain of the German National Team, an international projection of the Nazi ideology. When this came to light in the early 2000s, it opened up a wider investigation. German football had long shied away from any closer look at its relationship with the Nazis, and Schalke became the first club to undertake such an exploration of its history. It found that, as expected, a number of its staff had joined the NSDAP in the 1930s, and it had followed the discriminatory rules laid down for German football, but in fact only three of the club’s players had pronounced themselves as Nazis. For a side that had a number of representatives in the national side, that is a surprisingly low number. Szepan was the most obvious example – publicly supporting Adolf Hitler, personally benefitting from the antisemitic policies and representing the regime on the international stage. Hans Bornemann seems to have very little record apart from his membership of the party. But Szepan’s brother-in-law Ernst Kuzorra appears to have been as committed to the ideology as the rest of the family, proclaiming his vote for them and apparently delivering speeches just like Szepan, reportedly saying “German footballers rally behind their Führer. Germany has to live on, we will keep on fighting!”. After the war, Kuzorra claimed that he and his colleagues just wanted to play football, but nobody was required to join the NSDAP so that can’t have been completely true. Possibly, with his and Szepan’s slightly un-German names, they felt they needed to show more commitment , especially after Poland claimed that the number of Polish descendants in the Schalke team meant that they were really securing Polish victories.

All of which was largely forgotten, until the decision was made to name a street in Gelsenkirchen after legendary midfielder Fritz Szepan. The midfielder had been born in the town, and joined Schalke in 1924 as a fresh-faced 17 year old, only leaving the club 26 years later when his playing career came to and end. He played for his country 34 times, and won the German Championship as a manager with Rot-Weiss Essen. More importantly, with brother-in-law Ernst Kuzorra, he pioneered the

Regardless, after the war he was quickly released as not believing in the Nazi ideology, and Szepan followed not long after. Nils Havermann has argued that while a number of clubs, including Werder Bremen, Stuttgart and 1860 Munich, were considerably Nazified, Schalke were more the unwitting accomplices used for their success. Their working class background and their dominance was a good example of the volksgemeinschaft, or people’s community. And they certainly went along with the racist and restrictive reforms passed down by the German government. But, as Stefan Goch concluded, “There were no real culprits in the club, but no heroes either.” Like much of the German population, they obeyed in order to survive, and while we would all like to believe in our own resistance, nobody can no for sure how they would have reacted in those circumstances. And what of the two players with eagles emblazoned on their shirts? Well Goch’s investigation found the (relatively) innocent answer to that too. Schweiswurth and Berg had by the end of the 1938-39 season been called up into the army.

The Reichsadler was a requirement for any player called up, to show that even famous sportsmen were doing their part for the Fatherland. By the end of the war, as Germany began to suffer defeats, the number of players called up increased, and with it the number of eagles on the kits. In 2008 The Times ran a piece claiming that Hitler had been a Schalke supporter. In fact, he was not much of a football fan at all, and only attended one match – a 2-0 defeat for Germany to Norway in the 1936 Olympics – which only soured the sport for him. In response to the article, Schalke sent a reply to the editor: “We watched every episode of Allo Allow for a clue. Nothing. To conclude Hitler was a fan of Schalke 04 because they won most of the titles during his regime must make Margaret Thatcher a

Liverpool fan.” Enjoy the game.
