THE GAFFER I’d like to start by extending a warm welcome to the players, officials and supporters of Rugby Town who are tonight’s visitors to the Sett for a United Counties Premier Division South fixture.

We go into the game on the back a fifth win in six matches following a hard-fought 2-0 win against Eynesbury Rovers at the weekend; the only loss during that period being the 1-0 home defeat against Newport Pagnell Town. That said we need to ensure that we keep our feet on the ground as we know that we face another tough assignment this evening. It goes without saying that we will need to be at our best if we are to take anything against a side who themselves recorded an excellent 1-0 victory over the previously unbeaten league leaders Hinckley LRFC in the FA Vase at the weekend Its no coincidence that improved availability has led to a more settled line-up which in turn has seen an upturn in form, long may it continue as whilst nothing should be or will be taken for granted looking at the fixtures, we have a great opportunity to continue our climb up the table over the coming weeks.

Following tonight’s fixture, we head to Potton United on Saturday which is followed by a local derby against Wellingborough Town, the return fixture against Potton along with trips to Rothwell Corinthians and Long Buckby all of which means that its promises to be an exciting period in the lead up to the Christmas break.

TODAY’S VISITORS Formed by Keith Coughlan and under the name of New Bilton Juniors, the Valley played its first friendly match in 1955. In 1956, the club was renamed for the first time, to Valley Sports and entered the Rugby and District Football League. The club progressed to the Coventry and North Warwickshire Football League in 1963, and to the United Counties League in 1969 changing the name to VS Rugby. The club initially played at Thornfield and then briefly at Hillmorton Recreation ground when Thornfield was taken over for the sports centre before groundsharing with the then Southern Football League side Rugby Town at Oakfield. VS Rugby moved into their own ground, Butlin Road, in 1973 the first competitive game there being a 0–0 draw against Burton Park Wanderers in the United Counties League. In 1975 the club was invited to join the West Midlands League and took part in the FA Cup for the first time in 1976, being knocked out in the first qualifying round. In 1981, the Valley's most successful manager, Jimmy Knox, took over. He had previously successfully managed the then Rugby Town (for whom he had also made 452 appearances) and AP Leamington. Knox turned around the club's fortunes dramatically and in 1983 they won The FA Vase, defeating Halesowen Town 1–0. For the 1983/84 season the club joined the Southern League where success continued with the club winning The Midland Division in 1986/87, The Southern League Cup in 1989/90 and The Birmingham Senior Cup in 1988/89 and 1991/92. During Jimmy Knox's 11 years at Butlin Road the Valley had much success in the FA Cup, their best being a run to the second round in 1987/88 being knocked out by Bristol Rovers after a drawn game at Butlin Road. They also had memorable cup ties against Northampton Town, Bristol City, and Leyton Orient. In August 1991, VS Rugby played and beat a strong Manchester United side 1–0 at Butlin Road in a testimonial match to recognise Knox's ten years at the club. Once Knox left the club in 1992 its fortunes started to decline and despite reaching the second round of The FA Cup again in the 1992/93 season they were relegated and the then chairman put the club into receivership. A group of supporters that included founder Keith Coughlan, however, rescued the club, and manager Ron Bradbury stayed on to gain promotion behind newly formed Rushden & Diamonds in 1994. The same season the club also again reached the first round of The FA Cup losing at home to Brentford. VS Rugby changed its name to Rugby United in 2000, and to Rugby Town in 2005. The club came close to promotion twice under manager Dave Stringer in the 2012–13 and 2013–14 seasons. In 2012–13 they missed out on the title on the final day before losing to Biggleswade Town in the play-off final at Butlin Road. The following season saw them once again in contention for the title on the final day only to fail to secure top spot. Promotion hopes once again ended in the play-offs after a defeat to Slough Town over two legs in the semi-final. The 2014/15 season was less successful with the club failing to make the playoffs after an inconsistent season. For the first time in the club's history, Rugby Town were moved into the Northern Premier League system for the 2015–16 season. Stringer's replacement, former Rushden & Diamonds midfielder Gary Mills, tendered his resignation early into the season after a poor start and was replaced by ex-Tamworth boss Dale Belford. At the start of the 2016/17 season James Jepson was appointed manager but lasted but a few weeks being replaced by former player Gary Moran in September 2016. Moran could not guide Rugby away from the relegation zone and they were condemned to relegation to the Midland Football League on the final day of the season with Moran resigning shortly afterwards. Former manager Dave Stringer returned to the role of manager in May 2017 after leaving Chasetown however Rugby Town parted company with manager Dave Stringer in May 2018 and he was subsequently replaced in the same month by Stratford Town F.C. manager Carl Adams.

EARLY GOALS SEE BADGERS BATTLE PAST ROVERS

By NICK INWOOD Eynesbury Rovers were the latest team to visit the Sett with the Badgers looking to avenge a 2-1 defeat earlier in the season, a game which saw all three goals come in the final ten minutes. Mid-table Eynesbury went into the game having picked up a first win in eleven games last time out, this after what had been a promising start to the season. There was one change to the Badgers line-up from last weeks win against Biggleswade with Alin-Cristian Cosma returning to the side in place of Joe Power who moved to the bench. Following a bright start, it was the Badgers took a deserved lead on 12 minutes when DAN PORTER was on hand to head home a Calvin Green free kick from close range – a first goal in 13 outings and seventh of the season for Porter.

Two minutes later and the Badgers lead was doubled. Calvin Green was again the provider as his corner kick from the left was powerfully headed home by CURTIS AVERY for this second goal in as many games and almost a carbon copy of last weeks against Biggleswade. With the visitor's shell shocked the game became a niggly affair with players from both teams seemingly arguing with the officials as much as they were playing football, arguably with the cushion of a two-goal lead this played into Bugbrooke’s hands. With the half hour approaching the Badgers had strong claims for a penalty kick with Eddie Panter seemingly upended inside the box however the referee deemed otherwise, and the play went on much to the dismay of players, management and supporters. The Badgers suffered a blow before half-time as Charlie Green was forced off due to injury, Sam Tamakloe his replacement. HALF TIME BUGBROOKE ST MICHAELS - 2 EYNESBURY ROVERS - 0

With the Badgers playing with confidence and looking organised in defence it was going to take something special from a hard-working Eynesbury side if they were going to find a way back into the game. Just as the first half had ended the second half proved to be a scrappy stop-start affair, regularly interrupted by the sound of the referee's whistle. With 10 minutes remaining Eynesbury had arguably their best sighter of the goal as some trickery inside the box created an opportunity that was extremely well saved by Jake Bull covering his near post. Had that have gone in it would have made for a nervy finale as it was the Badgers were able to comfortably see out the game. FULL TIME BUGBROOKE ST MICHAELS - 2 EYNESBURY ROVERS - 0

AROUND THE UCL Premier Division South

Well it took until the 21st November however Hinckley LRFC have finally lost a game, albeit it was in the FA Vase as todays visitors to the Sett, Rugby Town recorded a 1-0 win thanks to a first half goal from James Hancocks. Elsewhere in the Vase there were wins for fellow UCL sides Coventry Sphinx (3-1 vs RC Warwick), Newport Pagnell Town (2-1 on penalties vs Leighton Town following a 1-1 draw), Harborough Town (2-0 vs Wellingborough Town) and Coventry United (5-4 on penalties following a 1-1 draw against Westfields). In the league struggling Biggleswade United picked up a second win in three games, 1-0 against Rothwell Corinthians and with ON Chenecks losing 3-0 at home against Desborough Town it means that its now only goal difference that is keeping them at the foot of the table.

Premier Division North It was a mixed bag for the UCL North sides in the Vase, league leaders Long Eaton suffered defeat, going down 3-1 in their trip to Atherstone Town.

Gresley Rovers also exited the competition, losing 2-0 to fellow UCL side Loughborough Students whilst Deeping Rangers went down 2-0 against Walsall Wood. In the league there was an 8-goal thriller at Heanor Town where a 4-4 draw was played out against Melton Town who equalsed through Thomas Harris in the 91st minute! Elsewhere there were wins for Sleaford Town, Boston Town, Eastwood CFC whilst Quorn vs Newark ended in a draw.

Reserve Division There is no doubting the result of the day, it came at Daventry Town where the hosts who started the day with just a single point from their 14 games swept aside league leaders and form side Kempston Rovers by a 5-2 margin. With Harborough Town inactive the result enabled us to climb back into second place, now level on points with Kempston albeit with two games in hand as we recorded a comfortable 4-0 win against Wellingborough Town. Elsewhere the prolific Brian Farrell was in the goals again, scoring a hat-trick as Desborough Town brushed aside Huntingdon 10-0! There were also wins for Cogenhoe United, MK Irish, ON Chenecks, Wellingborough Whitworths and GNG Oadby Town.

On Sunday 21st November the Sett welcomed an Ollie Stanford XI who took on a Daniel Powell XI in a charity game in aid of Prostate Cancer. It was the ‘Old Uns’ boasting a few familiar faces who showed the ‘Young Guns’ how to do it, running out 8-0 victors. Thanks to everyone who came along to support a great cause!

YOUTH FOOTBALL The weekend saw all of our Youth teams in action, the Minis on Saturday followed by our competitive teams on Sunday.

The 14s remain in a mid-table position as they picked up a hard fought point following a 2-2 home draw in the ‘derby’ against Harpole.

Both of our Under 12s picked up 3 points following comprehensive wins in their respective divisions.

The 15s travelled to Welland Valley and returned with the points thanks to a 4-1 win, a result which sees us move to the top of the table, above Blisworth on goal difference albeit with two games in hand.

The Under 12 Black welcome FFA Gold to the Sett and ran out 10-1 winners to consolidate their third place position in the ‘A’ League whilst the Blues travelled to Paulserpury to take on Towcester Saints, running out 8-3 victors to maintain a 3 point lead at the top of the ‘B’ League. It was a similar story for our 13’s with the Whites picking up a 7-2 home win against West Haddon Ninjas whilst the Blacks maintained their 100% start to the season as they recovered from a half time deficit to record an excellent 4-3 win against second placed Bilton Ajax Autobots.

The 16s also travelled to Welland Valley however it wasn’t such good news as despite two goals from Billy Panter they suffered a first league defeat of the season going down 5-3 against their hosts. Despite the defeat they remain top of the table however a number of teams have games in hand and are now breathing down their necks!

”Brazil's little Bird”

Manuel Francisco dos Santos is one of the greatest players to have ever put on the yellow shirt of Brazil, and yet he should never have been a footballer. He was born in 1933 with a deformed spine and one leg a full 6cm shorter than the other. He had crooked knees, with one bending inward and the other out. And, at a time when football was much more physical, he was small, leading his sister to give him the nickname that would stick for the rest of his life; Garrincha, or Little Bird. Despite his disadvantages, he showed immense talent at an early age, but worryingly for Brazilian football, little inclination to enter the sport professionally.

They finally conceded in the semi-final against France, despite a thumping 5-2 win, and repeated that score line in the final against hosts Sweden. Garrincha had played his part in creating a global footballing superpower, but it is Pele who is remembered for the triumph.

When he finally did enter the professional game he was an immediate sensation. In his first training session at Botafogo he nutmegged and embarrassed Brazil international Nilton Santos. Deciding that he would never want to play against Garrincha, Santos urged the club to sign him up, and Botafogo, not needing much convincing, happily did so.

Brazil travelled across the continent this time as hot favourites to retain the trophy. In Pele and Garrincha, they had two of the most exciting players in the world. They opened with a 2-0 win over Mexico – Pele getting on the scoresheet – before disaster struck the young talisman, injured in the goalless draw against Czechoslovakia and ruled out of the rest of the competition. Brazil needed new inspiration, and they looked to their Little Bird.

Over the next five years, Garrincha become one of the most feared wingers in Brazil. He scored a hat-trick on his debut and ended his first season with 20 goals in 26 appearances, going into the 1954 World Cup. His exclusion from that squad was less to do with his only having been a professional for one year, and more to do with Brazil, desperate to make up for their home defeat in 1950, doing something very unlike Brazil, and focusing on teamwork and a European style. It led to the vicious Battle of Bern and wouldn’t last. Garrincha continued to terrorise the defenders in Brazil, and by 1958 the shackles had been taken off of a new Brazilian golden generation. The Seleção travelled to with a new tactical innovation that dropped a midfielder into the back line, giving the world the first modern back four, and unleashing an outrageously talented front four. This was a side in which Garrincha could, and would, shine. At the helm was Vicente Feola, who had been assistant to legendary Hungarian Bela Guttman (who would later curse Benfica).

Garrincha returned to Botafogo a hero, leading the side to two more league titles and earning the nicknames Alegria do Povo (People’s Joy) and Anjo do Pernas Tortas (Bent-legged Angel). He was already a legend, a hero in Brazil, when his pinnacle approached at the 1962 World Cup in Chile.

Garrincha showed the world just how ready he was to lead his side in the next match against Spain, while also demonstrating just how exceptional he could be. With the score at 1-1 and time counting down, he picked up the ball on the right wing. He went past the first man, and then... stopped. He waited for the first defender to get back and beat him again for good measure. Then he beat the second man and delivered an inch-perfect cross for the winner. It was an audacious display of brilliance and arrogance, and it set the tone for Garrincha’s tournament. England awaited Brazil in the quarter-final where they were expected to provide a stern test. But Garrincha was in exceptional form and scored early on with a header. His free kick could only be palmed to forward Vava, who doubled the lead, before Garrincha curled into the bottom corner to seal the win. His famous “banana shots” are often said to have curled more than anybody’s, with some speculating that his crooked knees helped swerve the ball even more.

Feola’s side hit that World Cup running and didn’t look back. They started with a 3-0 victory over Austria, and drew 0-0 with England, before Garrincha announced himself with a dazzling display against the Soviet Union, where he laid on both goals while giving the fullback a torrid time. A moment of magic in the quarter final against Wales from 17 Edson Arantes do Nascimento, Pele, sealed his place in the side alongside the Little Bird – there had been calls for him to be dropped beforehand. Semi-final opponents Chile tried to keep Garrincha from having an impact on the game, paying him close attention. Not that it helped. The Little Bird scored a header again, and drilled home a second, before setting up two more for Vava as Brazil ran out 42 winners. Czechoslovakia were to be the opponents in the final, and Brazil made two important decisions in the build up – to let their opponents believe Pele was going to play (he wasn’t), and to keep from them that Garrincha had a fever. He played, medicated, and didn’t have the same impact, but he had done enough and his teammates saw him over the line.

Garrincha, sadly, suffered a knee injury not long after that World Cup and his star faded at a remarkable rate. He played at the 1966 competition, and the defeat against Hungary was his last international game, and the only defeat in his 50 caps. He descended into alcoholism and womanising, watching on as his team mates won in 1970, the greatest World Cup side of all time. But, even with his reputation forgotten and the great Pele above him, the Little Bird was still named in the Team of the Century. He played the game how everybody wanted, and nobody dared.
