THE GAFFER I’d like to start by extending a warm welcome to the players, officials and supporters of Eynesbury Rovers who are today’s visitors to the Sett for a United Counties Premier Division South fixture.

Looking back on my last set of programme notes I stated that if we were to secure a mid-table finish (or better) then it was vital that we started to pick up more points at the Sett hence I was delighted that we kicked off this current sequence of home fixtures by picking up 3 points against Biggleswade United last weekend. On paper it was a home banker however football doesn’t always work like that. Buoyed by their first win of the season against ON Chenecks Biggleswade came into the game with nothing to lose and having seen us lose Cosmin Capatina in the warm-up, fall behind early on and then miss numerous guilt edged chances you felt that it could be one of those days however, the lads remained patient and having drawn level through Greg Ling the outcome of the game was never in doubt once we got our noses in front mid-way through the first half. With the lead having been extended to 5-1 at the interval and the visitors down to ten men the second half was never going to be a spectacle for the neutral however a 7-2 win, a first goal for Joel Gyasi and 3 points was more than welcome from our perspective!

That said, Eynesbury have gone through a lean spell of late with Saturday’s win against GNG Oadby their first win in eleven games however a recent change in management will ensure their players will be eager to impress. Anyway, thank you for your support, enjoy the game, and I hope to see you back at the Sett on Tuesday when Rugby Town are the visitors.

TODAY’S VISITORS After two incomplete seasons in the Spartan South Midlands League Eynesbury Rovers have returned to the United Counties League Premier Division South. The club were formed in 1897 and played friendly matches before joining the Biggleswade & District League and then the St Neots Junior League, which they won in 1910/11 and 1913/14. They lifted the Huntingdonshire Senior Cup for the first time in 1914 and won the County Junior Cup in 1921, 1927 and 1932. Whilst the first team competed in the Bedford & District League First Division Eynesbury’s Reserves won 2nd Division championships in 1927, 1931 and 1932. In 1934 Eynesbury joined the South Midlands League and promotion was achieved at the first attempt whilst the Scott-Gatty Cup was won, but Senior Cup finals in 1937 and 1939 ended in defeat. The post war era began with Rovers joining the United Counties League and they enjoyed spectacular cup success winning the Hunts Senior Cup and Hinchingbrooke Cup four times each in a five-year period. In the 1950-51 campaign a Premier Cup success made it a cup hat trick. In 1952 Eynesbury joined the Eastern Counties League finishing fourth in their second season. In 1955 a crowd of 4,000 packed into Hall Road to watch a friendly against Fulham with the legendary Stanley Matthews guesting for Rovers. The club continued to enjoy cup success lifting the Senior Cup in 1955 and 1957, the Hinchingbrooke Cup in 1959 and Cambs Invitation Cup in 1962, but they were finding life difficult in the league. In 1963 they rejoined the UCL. Successes in the Hinchingbrooke Cup in 1967 and Hunts Senior Cup in 1970 masked a continued decline and relegation was suffered in 1972. A topflight place was regained in 1977 and floodlights were installed in 1981 with Luton Town providing the opposition for the official opening in front of a four-figure crowd. The Hunts Senior Cup was won in 1985 before Gary Pilsworth enjoyed great success as manager, leading Eynesbury to a best ever third place in the league, two Hunts Senior Cup wins, a Premier Cup success and two East Anglian Cup finals, and Alan Day kept the momentum going with a 1993 Senior Cup success. Barry Cavilla was next in the hot seat and the 1995-96 campaign saw Eynesbury finish fifth in the league and win both the Senior and Premier Cups. Peter Schofield took over and done well to keep the team in the Premier Division on a small budget. Neil King returned and enjoyed success in the Hunts Senior Cup in 2000 but was followed by relegation a year later. Steve Galbraith took over and in 2002 Rovers again won the Senior Cup beating local rivals St Neots Town 3-0 in the final, while the 2003-04 campaign saw them reach the Huntingdonshire Premier Cup final only to lose 4-2 to Wootton Blue Cross. In the summer of 2005 Dean Shipp took charge and the following season Rovers reached the final of the South Midlands Floodlit Cup losing 2-1 to Saffron Walden. In December 2007 Rovers appointed the management duo of Al Lenihan and former player Pat O'Keeffe. Season 2008/09 saw Rovers near the top of the table for most of the season but had to settle for 9th place after being deducted six points. Al & Pat resigned at the end of that season and Eynesbury appointed Matt Plumb to take charge for the start of the 2009/10 campaign and with Martin Field he guided Rovers back to the Premier Division in 2013/14. In a record breaking season they finished with a record number of points (98) and goals (118) and recorded a club record 11 consecutive wins. Lee Bassett became the first Eynesbury player to score 50 goals in a season. Matt Plumb took on the role of chairman in the summer of 2015 before Martin Field resigned in October 2015. Mark Ducket was appointed as manager and in four campaigns he has led Rovers to three Hunts Senior Cup Finals, winning 1-0 against St Neots Town in 2017. Whilst in the same season recording 119 league goals whilst equaling their second best ever league placing finishing fifth. In 2019/20 Rovers rejoined the Spartan South Midlands League and enjoyed their best ever run in the FA Vase reaching the 4th Round. In January 2020 Mark Ducket left to manage Bedford Town and Rovers appointed Steve Kuhne as his replacement. He resigned in October 2021 and ex-professional Rob Sinclair has been appointed as his replacement.

BADGERS BRUSH ASIDE 10 MAN BIGGLESWADE

By NICK INWOOD Fresh from their first victory of the season Biggleswade United were the latest visitors to the Sett as the Badgers were looking to secure a first home win since the opening game of the season, Following a raft of changes for the mid-week cup fixture there was a more familiar look to the Badgers line-up although an injury to Cosmin Capatina in the warm-up resulted in a late reshuffle with Curtis Avery stepping up from the bench. With both players having observed a minute silence in memory of those who have lost their lives serving the country it was a bright start by the Badgers and Dan Porter should have done better inside the opening minute, his closerange effort clearing the crossbar when it appeared easier to score. Against the run of play Biggleswade took the lead from what was their first attack, a ball in from their right was finished from close range. Despite this setback it remained the Badgers doing the running however missed chances were proving to be their Achilles heal, most notably when Joe Power somehow missed the target with the goal gaping from what can only be described as inches out.

A deserved equaliser came when GREG LING was on hand to fire home from close range following an excellent run and cross from Eddie Panter on the right-hand side; Joe Power take note. Soon after the Badgers were in front as JOEL GYASI scored his first goal for the club from close range. On 35 minutes the game was effectively over as EDDIE PANTER scored from the spot with Kye Andrews penalised for a handball on the line, an offence that saw the Biggleswade player dismissed. This proved to be the catalyst for the goal rush with further goals from GREG LING and CURTIS AVERY, his first of the season. All of which meant that the visitors had a mountain to climb, 5-1 and a man down at the interval. HALF TIME BUGBROOKE ST MICHAELS - 5 BIGGLESWADE UNITED - 1 Despite being a man down Biggleswade made a spirited start to the second-half, with the Badgers seemingly a little disrupted following a number of personnel changes. On 65 minutes Biggleswade pulled a goal back through Taylor Rhiney who finished well into the far corner following a smart turn just inside the box.

Unfortunately, this was as good as it got for Biggleswade with the Badgers eventually awarded a second spot kick (there were several offences that on another day could have resulted in the award of a penalty), this time for a foul on Porter. The penalty was dually converted by EDDIE PANTER for his second of the game. The fact that there was only one more goal, a close-range finish from substitute DAN FIELD who got on the end of a deflected Calvin Green free kick, was down to some good goalkeeping and poor finishing as on another day it could have been double figures. As it was, we left this to England! AROUND THE UCL Premier Division South

The big news this week is that Peterborough Northern Star have taken the decision to fold the team due to an ongoing dispute with their landlords over their ground lease. They have pulled their first team from the United Counties League with immediate effect; what this means for promotion and relegation remains to be seen….. Despite struggling all season their final outing saw them go down 1-0 against league leaders Hinckley LRFC who scored the winner from the penalty spot in the 89th minute, a result which preserves their 100% record. Elsewhere there were wins for Rugby Town, Potton United, Lutterworth Town, Eynesbury Rovers, Coventry Sphinx and ourselves whilst Cogenhoe United played out a 2-2 home draw against Coventry United. The game between Wellingborough Town and Easington Sports ended goalless.

It was a toss of a coin for result of the day however it must go to strugglers Quorn who picked up a point (1-1) against third placed Anstey Nomads. Although mid-table Deeping Rangers may feel a little hard done by as they also took a point on the road against high-flying Gresley Rovers courtesy of a 1-1 score line. With Long Eaton claiming a comfortable 5-0 win against Eastwood they were able to capitalise on results elsewhere to extend their lead at the top of the table to 5 points. Elsewhere there were wins for Heanor Town, Skegness Town, Leicester Nirvana, Selston, Boston Town and Loughborough Students whilst Heather St. Johns and Melton Town played out a draw.

Reserve Division In the battle of the top two Kempston Rovers and Harborough Town played out a hard fought 2-2 draw, a result that that we failed to take advantage of as we suffered our first defeat of the season going down 2-1 against GNG Oadby Town, Dyaus Gohil-Patel netting the winner in the 63rd minute.

Despite recording a 7-0 home win against Rothwell Corinthians it proved to be the final game in charge of Newport Pagnell for long-serving Manager Darren Clarke; he leaves with the team in a healthy 5 th place in the league. At the foot of the table a points adjustment means that Daventry Town have now replaced Raunds Town as the bottom placed team, with just a single point from their 14 games.

Someone came to tackle me, I got scared so toe punted it and it went straight in the bottom corner! 4. Best player you’ve played with It’d have to be Liam Kelly who is the current Captain of Championship side Coventry City. 5. Best player you’ve played against Dion Sembie-Ferris for Peterborough Sports. They beat us 9-0 in the FA Cup and he was unplayable on the day. 6. Best football moment Scoring twice at the end of Cup Final at Sixfields to win a Sunday Cup. I was playing with my best mates! 7. Most memorable match Playing for Bugbrooke against Melton a couple of seasons ago in a top of the table clash. They could have easily been about seven up by half time however it was only one and I then scored in the second-half and we somehow drew 1-1. 8. Match you would wish to forget Not so much a match as there's nothing that you can do after the final whistle has blown, so I’d have to say the null and void season a couple of years ago, it still hurts! 9. Player/Team that you would pay to watch I've seen Ronaldo play so I'd have to say Messi 10. Best Manager I've always been at my clubs for a few seasons and loved playing for all of the Managers that I've had.

11. Biggest joker in the team There isn’t an individual that stands out, since I've been at Bugbrooke the changing room has always been a great laugh! 12. Any superstitions? Don't think I have any to be honest 13. Longest in the shower That’s an easy one, Eddie Panter! He takes forever and does it on purpose just to annoy those waiting

YOUTH FOOTBALL With Half Term now a distant memory Youth Football is now back in full swing at the Sett. Whilst our Mini Teams continue to play some great football resulting in closely fought contests our older age groups continue to impress in their respective leagues. At Under 12 level our Blues remain undefeated, with their latest success a 7-0 away win against second placed Soccer Stars with all of the goals coming in the second half! The Blacks continue to impress in the ‘A’ League, a 6-3 win last time out against FFA Red consolidating their position in third place, just on the shoulders of the top two and ready to pounce should they slip up. Both 13’s were without a game.

The 14s followed up their trip to Wolverhampton, where they lost 4-2 on Friday evening with a welcome 3-1 home win over GLK Stripes whilst the 16s continued their excellent start to the season with a 8-1 success over Welford Victoria, a result that cements their place at the head of the league.

“Helenio Herrera and the creation of Italian Football”

“Clown and genius, buffoon and ascetic, rogue and model father, sultan and faithful husband, swaggering fool and quiet achiever, delinquent and competent, megalomaniac and health fanatic. Herrera is all of the above and more.” So said Italian football journalist Gianni Brera in 1966, as Herrera took Inter to their third Serie A title in four years, a spell that also brought two European Cups. The Argentinian, by this stage, had already changed football in completely unrecognisable ways, and put in place practices that echo through to the modern game. He was perhaps the first modern manager.

An unspectacular player, Herrera finished a limited career in Casablanca and France in 1944-5 with a knee injury, in only his twenties. Ever determined, Herrera himself later claimed that this was an advantage as he took his first steps into coaching - “My advantage is that big-star… do not know how to teach someone what they naturally did with so much grace. Not in my case.” He joined Stade Francais as manager, and then moved to Real Valladolid and around the Iberian peninsula building his reputation, including two league titles with Atletico Madrid, before Barcelona decided he might just be the man to break Real Madrid’s stronghold on La Liga. Madrid had won four league titles in five years when Herrera turned up at their greatest rivals. They had poached the great Alfredo di Stefano from under the Catalans’ nose, a player that Herrera would describe as the greatest of all time – “If Pele is a lead violin, then Di Stefano is an entire orchestra”. But for the disciplined manager, organisation and obedience trumped any individual ability. He immediately introduced three physically demanding training sessions per day, and in only the first he caused a player to vomit through exertion. There were no excuses for missing either. When one player complained of feeling sick, he sent them back out to the training pitch. Another turned up in a plaster cast, and Herrera broke it off himself. Discipline was absolute. Results were immediate. Helped by the discipline, Herrera’s forensic detail and his habit of riling up opposition fans so much before a match that, he hoped, they would be too tired to rally against his players, they beat Real Madrid 4-0 in his first match, and won the league in his first season. That meant Barca could take their place for the first time in the European Cup, but problems were beginning to bubble under the surface. Tensions arose between the Argentinian and star striker Laszlo Kubala, whose style was anathema to the disciplined approach Herrera was implementing but was so popular that some stories claim the Camp Nou was built specifically to host the number of fans desperate to watch him play. Barcelona’s progress in the European Cup went well, until they met Madrid in the semi-final. Kubala was dropped, and Barcelona

They lost the second leg as well, and despite winning the league for a second successive season, Herrera left the club. The Catalans would have to wait until 1974 before their next title. Italian football was a very different place in 1960 to the world we know now. Managers were never in the press, and received low pay, and fan culture was practically non-existent. Herrera changed both, initially by signing a huge contact – on a par with his star players – at Inter Milan. Discipline was instilled again, but this time there were no exceptions. Striker Antonio Angelillo, a hero whose record the previous season, was shipped out immediately because of concerns about his personal life. Armando Picchi, the imperious sweeper, questioned Herrera just once and found himself playing for AS Varese. He suspended a player for telling the press “we came to play in Rome”, rather than “we came to win in Rome”. In their place Herrera signed players he trusted, and who trusted him completely, like Luis Suarez, who followed him from Spain. Players would be taken to hotels for three days at a time, for intense training camps away from any distractions, and worked as hard as Herrera could manage. Alongside this harsh, almost military discipline (Gerry Hitchens said that leaving the club “felt like leaving the bloody army”), Herrera cultivated and emphasised the importance of the fans, getting involved in the creation and continuation of fan clubs and supporters' movements. John Foot claimed, in 2006, that Herrera had invented Ultra that so dominates Italian fan involvement today. Herrera’s time at Inter started slowly, finishing 3rd and 2nd in his first two seasons, behind city rivals Milan and Herrera’s counterpoint, another charismatic, disciplined thinker, Nereo Rocco. Rocco, it could be argued, adapted the Caternaccio from the sweeper system invented by Karl Rappan in Switzerland, but Herrera is the man most synonymous with it. In his third season, Inter won the Scudetto for the first time since 1954, and the Argentinian was nicknamed The Wizard. His Inter side (nicknamed Il Grande Inter) entered the European Cup for the first time.

The campaign was the model of discipline for which Herrera strived. They kept a clean sheet against Everton in the first round and would keep four more en route to the final. There they met Herrera’s Spanish rivals Real Madrid, in the final chapter of their glorious golden era, with Puskas and De Stefano coming to the end of their careers. Sandro Mazzola ended a quiet first half with a spectacular strike from the edge of the area to give Inter a halftime lead, before Aurelio Milani doubled it mid-way through the second half. Madrid scored one back from a corner, before Mazzola added a second to ensure Herrera’s revenge for 1960 was complete. And make no mistake; this was just as much about Herrera’s revenge as it was about Inter’s first European Cup. The most defining characteristic of Herrera’s teams is win at any cost. And when we say “at any cost”, we mean it. Inter successfully defended their European Cup in 1965 in a match that “was not a win for purists”, according to UEFA. More controversially though, were the semi-finals. Inter lost 3-1 at Anfield and Bill Shankly, he claimed, was told that he would never be allowed to win in Milan. They lost, 3-0, in a match that has become infamous. One goal was scored directly from an indirect free-kick. Another was kicked out of the goalkeeper’s hands as he tried to kick it out. Both were beyond ridiculous. Both stood.

The decline started the following season. Inter lost in the 1966 European Cup semi-finals to Real Madrid, and then lost the final in 1967 to Jock Stein’s Celtic. They also lost the Scudetto on the final day. In 1968, they had slumped to fifth and Herrera left, his legacy intact but his team, apparently, in tatters. “After many years we were somehow used to it, but, by that stage, even we had reached our breaking point” reported Tarcisio Burgnich. Herrera always claimed that his Catenaccio was misunderstood, and that his side was far more creative and progressive than he was given credit for. Regardless, his legacy stretches for half a century into Italian football, taking in the pragmatic styles of Giovanni Trapattoni, Cesare Maldini, and Fabio Capello (whose 1993/4 Milan team won the Scudetto scoring just 32 goals). More importantly, Italian football’s “win at all costs” mentality has loomed large over the game, from the accusations of Brian Clough against Juventus in 1973, to the to the Calciopoli scandal of 2006. Without the disciplined Argentinian, you have to wonder how things might have been different. Enjoy the game.
