THE GAFFER I’d like to start by extending a warm welcome to the players, officials and supporters of Biggleswade United who are today’s visitors to the Sett in the United Counties Premier Division South.
With Eynesbury Rovers and Rugby Town to follow today’s game marks the start of three successive home fixtures in the league, something that we need to capitalise on. Looking at the table, five of our six wins have come on the road. A return of 4 points from 27 available at the Sett is something that we need to improve on if we are to move up to a more comfortable mid-table position. It’s hard to pin-point as to why we haven’t picked up more points at home, we have competed in most games; we need to start turning those 1-0 defeats into 0-0 draws or better still 1-0 wins. Last time out against Newport Pagnell was a prime example of this. We competed against a top-six side for 90 minutes however we were undone by a soft goal, which arguably should not have been awarded and once behind we found clear chances hard to come by.
“A return of 4 points from 27 available at the Sett is something that we need to improve on if we are to achieve a midtable position”
It was better news on Tuesday evening when we welcomed Cogenhoe United in the Quarter Final of the Northants FA Hillier Senior Cup. With a much-changed team which included first starts for Samuel Tamakloe and Alin-Cristian Cosma, we managed to secure a 2-1 win to move into the Semi-Final where we will face one of AFC Rushden & Diamonds, Peterborough Sports or the winners of the tie between Brackley Town and Daventry Town. Whoever we play to say that we will start as underdogs is an understatement! Anyway, thank you for your support, enjoy the game, and I hope to see you back at the Sett next Saturday when Eynesbury Rovers are the visitors.

TODAY’S VISITORS Biggleswade United Football Club was re-formed on the 16th July 1959. However, local history records indicate that there was a Biggleswade United side playing at Second Meadow as early as 1929. Our first season (1959/60) saw us competing in Division Three of the North Herts. League. After 10 successful years in the NHL the club made the step up to South Midlands League football. But towards the end of a 15-year association with the SML the club began to struggle and after three years of finishing in the bottom three of Division One we sought fresh fields. The club joined the Herts. Senior but continued to find the going tough. In 1986 we elected to return to local League football, joining the Bedford and District Football League and began to build again. The appointment of Brian Swords as first team manager in 87/88 proved to be the turning point in the club's fortunes. During the next ten years the club achieved a tremendous amount of success on and off the football pitch. Our record of League and Cup honours speak for themselves but aligned to this a great deal of work went on behind the scenes to match the on-field success. The club now boasts one of the best clubhouse and ground facilities in the MidBedfordshire area. The 1995/96 season was the most successful in the club's history - winning five major honours. Having won every major Bedford League honour the club felt it was time to move on and made the decision to make the step up once again and returned to Division One of the SML. In an exceptionally successful first season we celebrated a Division One "double". In the season 1997/98 we finally achieved Senior status. With the help of the Biggleswade Town Council a new stand was erected, and perimeter fencing installed. And two seasons later the club erected floodlights and on the evening of 26th October 1999 we played our first-ever floodlit game at Second Meadow. The next eleven years saw the first team led by Steve "Snowy" Wright and under his management the club continued to enjoy a very high level of success ultimately achieving promotion to the Molten Spartan South Midlands League Premier Division and with it the opportunity to compete in the FA Cup. The end of the 2006/07 saw Snowy step down as manager with his assistant, Nick Burton taking over the first team reins. January 5th 2009 saw the club embark on further ambitious ground improvements. With financial backing from Biggleswade Town Council, Mid Beds District Council and the Football Foundation we installed a 260-seater stand, fully enclosed the ground with a double turnstile entrance and players' secure walkway which raised the ground to Grade E status. In November 2014, the club took a further positive step to realise our ambitions with the appointment of Sky Sports Presenter and renowned author, Guillem Balague as Biggleswade United’s Director of Football. In the season 2019/2020 the club were sitting in a highly commendable third position in the Premier Division and under the management of Chris Devane and Trishnan Patel were hoping for a promotion play off opportunity. However, in March 2020 the season was declared Null and Void by the FA after the devastating outbreak of the Coronavirus. The club were also to learn that Chris and Tishnan had accepted the offer to work at Step 4 and departed the club at short notice. Fortunately, the club were able to call upon the services of former Head Coach Cristian Colas. Cristian took the club to its highest ever position in the club’s history at the curtailment of the 20/21 season leaving us second in the table on PPG. The club applied for promotion to Step 4 but were unsuccessful. A double whammy came when the club were subjected to a lateral move to the Uhlsport United Counties League. After ten years of steady progress at Step 5 the club now face a challenging period that will require steadfastness and perseverance as we work to rebuild a squad that will once again be challenging for promotion.

NORTHANTS FA HILLIER SENIOR CUP QUARTER FINAL TUESDAY 9th NOVEMBER

BADGERS PROGRESS TO COUNTY CUP SEMI FINAL
By NICK INWOOD On what was a mild November evening Cogenhoe United were the visitors to the Sett for the second time in a month, this time for a Quarter Final tie in the Northants FA Hillier Senior Cup. With the visitors one of the form sides in the Division, a run that included a win in the league encounter the Badgers knew that they were in for a tough encounter. The starting line-up saw several changes from the Badgers last league outing with Field, Avery and Caton brought into the defence whilst further up the field there were first starts for Tamakloe and Cosma. It was a bright start from both teams and it was the Badgers who gained an early lead on 8 minutes as Eddie Panter was released in the right channel and his low ball across the face of goal found the onrushing GREG LING who had the relatively simple task of side-footing home from close range. On 25 minutes Bugbrooke had a great chance to double their lead as the ball fell to Capatina however his effort was wild, clearing the crossbar by some distance when it seemed easier to score. Undeterred by this it was COSMIN CAPATINA who doubled the advantage less than 5 minutes later when a lovely through ball played him through on goal and with the visiting goalkeeper advancing, lifted a dinked finish over him and into the net, lovely goal!
With a two-goal advantage the Badgers were able to comfortably see out the half as despite plenty of endeavor from Cogenhoe the threat on the Badgers goal was minimal, with Bull not having to make a save of note. HALF TIME BUGBROOKE ST MICHAELS - 2 COGENHOE UNITED - 0 With one eye on the weekend the changes were rung at the interval with Freeman, Power and Webster introduced in place of Panter, Porter and Ling. As you would expect it was the visitors who did the majority of the running as they looked for a way back into the game however the Badgers defence was superbly marshalled by the experienced duo of Avery and Caton which meant that Bull remained a virtual spectator albeit he controlled his area with authority. With the clock running down and the Badgers seemingly having one foot in the Semi Final a rush of blood to the head from Field saw him come sliding in from the side with the referee left no choice but to award a penalty. After a short delay for treatment to the Bugbrooke player up stepped Dylan Wilson who sent the spot kick low to Bulls right and into the corner of the net.,
in the corner however as they broke out the ball fell to Cosma who found himself through on goal only to be bundled to the ground from behind for what seemed a clear penalty. The referee thought otherwise and in the blink of an eye Cogenhoe were on the attack and won themselves a free kick on the edge of the area. However, in the games controversial moment, on closer inspection the referee decided to award another penalty kick! Soft to say the least however the drama wasn’t over as the Assistant had a different (closer) view and with the ball having been placed on the spot he spoke to the referee who following consultation changed his mind and awarded Bugbrooke a free kick instead, presumably for simulation. As the kick was taken the full-time whistle was blown and Bugbrooke were through to the Semi-Final where they will face one of AFC Rushden & Diamonds, Peterborough Sports or the winners of Brackley Town and Daventry Town with their tie still to be played. FULL TIME BUGBROOKE ST MICHAELS - 2 COGENHOE UNITED - 1
With 5 minutes plus injury time left the Cooks sensed blood.
LINE UP: Bull, Whaler, Field, Avery, Caton (Capt.), Cosma, Tamakloe, Porter, Panter, Capatina, Ling
Having weathered the storm and with the game having moved deep into injury time Bugbrooke looked to maintain possession

AROUND THE UCL Premier Division South
Premier Division North
Just behind them Newport Pagnell Town have been quietly going about their business and having now played and won a number of their games in hand they find themselves in third position, six points behind second placed Harborough although with a game in hand; new signing Danny Webb scoring two in a 6-0 win against Long Buckby AFC last time out.
At the opposite end of the table Holbeach United continue to struggle and remain the only team still looking for their first win of the season, in fact you need to go back to early September for their last point.
It’s now played 17 won 17 for Hinckley LRFC and whilst they no longer have games in hand, they now hold a 5-point lead over Harborough Town at the summit.
Behind that Lutterworth Town, Wellingborough Town and Coventry United make up the chasing pack. The result of last weekend must go to today’s visitors Biggleswade United as goals from Rhiney, Clayton and Fati saw them pick up their first win and points of the season at the 17th time of asking; 3-0 winners against fellow strugglers ON Chenecks.

TENDAI DAIRE – LUTTERWORTH TOWN
Long Eaton remain the only unbeaten team in the North Division, their latest win 3-1 against Leicester Nirvana, a record which means they hold a 3-point lead over Gresley Rovers at the top of the Division.
With two wins from their last three fixtures Selston have managed to pull themselves out of the bottom two, with Quorn now below the dotted line. Looking at todays fixtures the game of the day is surely 5th placed Boston Town against 4th place Loughborough Students.

STEVE HART – GRESLEY ROVERS
Reserve Division Anything that Desborough Town’s Brian Farrell can do, Harborough Town’s
Elliot Granger can do better as on Tuesday night he went goal crazy scoring 7 goals in his teams 9-2 win over Cogenhoe United - six of his goals came inside the opening 40 minutes! The win, coupled with an excellent win over Newport Pagnell at the weekend, saw his team move back above ourselves and into second place on goal difference albeit we have two games in hand. At the opposite end of the table Raunds Town continue to struggle whilst Daventry Town picked up a credible point against mid-table Wellingborough Whitworths.

CHANGING ROOMS 1. Name & Team? Alfie Inwood, Under12s Blue
2. Previous clubs & Team that you support? None I am a season-ticket holder at Nottingham Forest. 3. First football memory Playing my first youth football tournament for the Badgers at Towcester Town. 4. Best player you’ve played with We’ve got lots of good players on our team so its hard to pick one out. 5. Best player you’ve played against Being so young I don’t know many of the opposing players, so I’d have to say George Powell in training, a tough competitor who loves to win! 6. Best football moment Coming on as a sub against Grange Park in the Under 8s NDYAL Plate at Sixfields; the score was 0-0 when I came on, I scored two goal including a long-range free kick and the team went on to win 7-1. 7. Most memorable match It’d have to be a Forest match against Leeds. It was live on Sky TV, it was a great game with Forest winning 2-0, the second goal scored by Tyler Walker came from a break away in added time. Me and my Dad had left our seats early (there was a Comedy Night at the Club) so we were watching the end of the game from the corner of the stadium, right in front of the TV cameras, the place erupted when the goal went it! 8. Match you would wish to forget It would have to be the last Forest game that I went to before lockdown which was against Millwall. It was a Friday night game, and my Dad had a problem at work which meant he was on his phone the entire journey to Nottingham. Forest found themselves 3-0 down before half time and it didn’t improve after the interval, so we left after 60 minutes. 9. “Best regards to the lads at Orient”
At the end of the 1913-14 season, there were rumblings across Europe and the propaganda machine was beginning to swing into action at home, but nobody really believed that war was coming. There had been posturing before, but Germany’s economy was closely linked to Britain’s, and it would make no sense to threaten that with a major war. There hadn’t been a large-scale continental conflict that threatened Britain for a century. And besides, a system of alliances kept the competing forces in balance. And then, on the 28th June 1914, on the other side of Europe, a teenager fired the shot that changes the world. The posturing became threats, the threats became action, and within a month the world was at war. By the 4th August Britain had joined the conflict, drawn in by its own alliance system.
Football, as you might expect, had a problem. The British Expeditionary Force – the small, professional army maintained for this kind of conflict – was all but wiped out before Christmas, as the football season was in full swing. The call for volunteers went out; conscription would come in 1917. People across the country joined up en masse, and they were expected to, and football tried to figure out how to play its part. On the 15th December, a meeting was called at Fulham Town Hall, and the 17th Middlesex Regiment was formed. It would be known as the Footballers Battalion. Key to its formation were Henry Wells-Holland and Robert Dalrymple, one the chairman of, and the other playing for, Clapton Orient. They joined Fred “Spider” Parker, Orient’s captain, and a handful of others. Dalrymple had spent much of his career at Hearts, and the Scottish club also responded enthusiastically when the message was sent north. Of the 35 footballers who joined up at that first meeting, ten played for Clapton Orient.
At the final whistle, the original ten changed into their army uniforms and, with other members of the Footballers Battalion, paraded around the pitch before heading off to their training camp. They were captured on film (the footage is on YouTube), and they were soon followed by the remaining 31 players and staff. The Footballer's Battalion was sent to France, where they acquitted themselves honorable among the rest of the British forces. They were to be included in major plans to break the German lines across the Western Front, including the Battle of Verdun, Battle of Passchendaele, and the Battle of the Somme. The three battles alone had a combined death toll approaching 2.5 million. Particularly deadly for the Footballers Battalion was the Somme. Although not involved in the opening exchanges, they saw heavy fighting in Devil’s Wood. Orient lost three of their players – they were comparatively lucky compared to some other clubs – in the fighting. Defender George Scott died of his wounds in a military hospital in Le Cateau, but Willie Jonas and Richard McFadden were together in the thick of the fighting. Jonas had been something of a favourite with the ladies of the East End, receiving dozens of fawning letters every week and eventually taking out a piece in the local newspaper, asking that, as flattered as he was, they could please stop sending them. McFadden, a goal scorer with a killer instinct, was even better known. He was a hero in East London, having saved a man from a burning building, and saved a child who was drowning in the River Lea. His exploits continued in France, where he would regularly crawl out into No-Man’s Land to haul his injured comrades back to the British lines. He was honored for this with the Military Medal for Bravery.
Wells-Holland had a military background, and that meant that ten platers was simply not enough to satisfy his recruitment drive. He went back to the club with the Footballers Battalion formed and started encouraging other players to join the service. With the help of the original ten, they set about impressing the importance of the endeavor on their teammates, and as the football season continued into 1915, Clapton Orient eventually became the first English club to sign up together, as the ten swelled to 41. In Scotland, Dalrymple had worked his magic at Hearts, and they did the same. At the end of the 1914-15 season, Orient welcomed Leicester Fosse to Millfields Road for the final fixture. 20,000 spectators packed into the cramped ground – squeezing in around the antiaircraft gun that had been positioned on the Spion Kop - and cheered their side on to a 2-0 victory. McFadden witnessed Jonas’ death, writing back to his club that they were both trapped in a trench at the Somme. “Willie turned to me and said, “Goodbye Mac”, Best of luck, special love to my sweetheart Mary Jane,” and Jonas stood up to leave the trench. His final recorded words were “best regards to the lads at Orient” and he was gone, over the trench and not seen again. McFadden survived the battle with heavy wounds, and received his medal and a promotion, before sadly losing his life in a shell blast not long afterwards. The Manchester Football Chronicle recorded that “Two things distinguished Richard McFadden throughout his career as a footballer – his heroism and his goalscoring proclivities. In civil life he was a hero, and he proved himself a hero on the battlefield.” At the closing of hostilities, as the country mourned, Clapton Orient looked back at the heavy toll the conflict had taken on their club. Tributes poured in, including one from King George V himself:
Company Serjeant Major Richard McFadden MM F/162 Private William Jonas F/32 Private George Scott 1583. We Will Remember Them. Enjoy the game.
