THE GAFFER I’d like to extend a warm welcome to the players, officials and supporters of Irchester United who are todays visitors to the Sett.

Just like Huntingdon Town today’s visitors come into the game having recently undergone a change of management, picking up a creditable draw from the trip to Whittlesey Athletic in their first game in charge. Last time out we made it back-to-back wins following the latest re-start with a 3-2 success against mid-table Huntingdon, with the game more comfortable than the score-line suggests. It was a game that saw us hand full First Team debuts to youngsters Aidan Webster and Eddie Panter; both of whom were deserving of the opportunity having performed well for both the Under 18s and Reserves. Neither player disappointed as they both turned in solid displays, I am sure that there is more to come! It was also a game in which Nathan Burrows scored a well-deserved hat-trick. He is a hard-working, honest player who has improved game on game since joining us at the start of October. With young Eddie stepping up, Drinky scoring a hat-trick of his own in our previous outing and new signing Ryan Lovell to add to the mix following completion of his suspension we now have great competition for the forward places in the team. Anyway, enjoy today’s game, have a great Christmas and New Year. I hope to see you back at the Sett when we welcome league leaders Long Buckby for the big local derby on the 2nd January. Jamie

It was a step into the unknown with the visitors having recently changed their management team. There were three changes to the side that beat Whitworths in mid-week with Diamond returning from injury to start alongside Under 18 players Aidan Webster and Eddie Panter, both of whom came in for their first starts fresh from a bruising encounter against Mansfield Town in the FA Youth Cup on Thursday evening. They replaced Harrison, Quigley and Drinkwater with the latter taking his place on the bench. On a testing surface the first twenty minutes was a non event with Bugbrooke dominating possession and territory however clear-cut chances were at a premium. The closest we came to a goal was a deflected effort that was well saved by the Huntingdon keeper. Against the run of play a rare breakaway resulted in Huntingdon taking the lead when a low shot from an angle inside the area somehow squeezed into the net. Undeterred Bugbrooke pushed for an equaliser with the hard-working Panter going close with a shot that hit the outside of the goal stanchion.

Minutes before the interval the Badgers were on level terms when good link up play on the left resulted in a low cross that was turned in by Burrows from six yards out. HALF TIME BUGBROOKE ST MICHAELS - 1 HUNTINGDON TOWN - 1 Two minutes after the re-start Bugbrooke were in front. It was Burrows again, this time a fantastic curling finish from the edge of the box that found the roof of the net - great goal! It was somewhat fitting that the hardworking Burrows then completed his hattrick, another composed finish following an assist from Webster. With a two-goal cushion Bugbrooke were in cruise control. Mid-way through the half and following a hard-working performance deserving of a goal Panter was replaced by Drinkwater. Further changes soon followed with Spencer and Caton entering the fray. The Badgers could and should have had more however there was a nervous finale as Huntingdon pulled one back through a close-range finish with five minutes to play, this despite a suspicion of offside.

As it was the Badgers stood firm to secure a deserved 3 points, a result that moves us back into the top four. FULL TIME BUGBROOKE ST MICHAELS - 3 HUNTINGDON TOWN - 2

Harborough Town were the headline makers as Mitch Austin’s team recorded an excellent 2-1 success over 10-man and in-form Quorn.

anticipated match up between league leaders Long Buckby and second placed Melton Town was postponed due to floodlight issues at Long Buckby.

Elsewhere there were wins for Loughborough University and Lutterworth Town whilst the game between ON Chenecks and Oadby was abandoned mid-way through the second half following an incident involving a spectator

This meant that the only game other than our own was Irchester’s trip to draw specialists Whittlesey Athletic.

for ON Chenecks (at leaders Desborough) coupled with our own success at Huntingdon saw us move back into second place, 5 points off top spot although with a game in hand. Elsewhere there were wins for Wellingborough Town (at Irchester), Kempston Rovers (at MK Irish) and Wellingborough Whitworths (at home to Potton United)

TODAYS VISITORS Today’s visitors Irchester United were formed as Irchester Excelsior in 1883, changing its name to United two years later.

In the early years the club played at “The Boundleys”, changing at the Working Mens Club. The present Alfred Street ground was first used in 1921 although it was ploughed up during the war. The club resumed football at the Recreation Ground before going back to Alfred Street in 1952. The Roman’s first success of note came in 1929 when they won the first of a record nine Rushden & District League titles. A year later the championship was retained with further success in the Northants Junior Cup and Irchester Charity Cup, which the Romans won on ten occasions up to 1961. The Northants League 2nd Division was won in 1931 and 1932 before Irchester briefly competed in the semi-professional 1st Division. In 1936 they returned to the Rushden League, winning it as the Reserves had done in 1933 and 1934, when they also won the Northants Junior Cup. In the post war era more success followed as the Romans won the Junior Cup in 1949 and carried off four Rushden League titles between 1947 and 1957. Irchester returned to the UCL in 1969 and won promotion to Division One in 1974. Highlights since have included Northants Junior Cup success in 1976, runners up in the same competition seven years later and a superb run in the first open Knockout Cup in 1981-82, three Premier scalps claimed en-route to a semi-final defeat at Stamford. The nineties saw the Romans struggle but in 2003 they enjoyed their best seasons in almost thirty Division One campaigns under Bob Reed & John Dower, narrowly missing out on the title and eventually finishing third. The success helped drive the club forward from a facilities perspective, with floodlights installed at the Alfred Street ground in the summer of 2005 After a series of lowly finishes, the appointment of Daren Young as manager in 2009 revitalised the club and the Division One title was won in 2009-10. Ground improvements saw the Romans promoted to the Premier Division, briefly topping the table in September 2010 for the first time in the clubs history. After 3 seasons in the top flight the club returned to Division One for the 2013-14 season. Now under the stewardship of Mark Forrest, the club reached the second round proper of the FA Vase for the first time in 2018.
