THE GAFFER I’d like to extend a warm welcome to the players, officials and supporters of Huntingdon Town who are todays visitors to the Sett.

With a change of management prior to the lockdown its difficult to know what to expect from todays opposition; that said all we can do is concentrate on what we can control, which is our own performance, get that right and we know that we are more than capable of getting the result that we want. It was great to be back on Tuesday evening. Given the lack of preparation going into the game I was delighted to pick up the 3 points, a result that sees us close the gap to the top four. We owed Whitworths one as having dominated over at their place earlier in the season we were forced to settle for a point following a fortunate late equaliser.

We went into Tuesday's game missing a number of players, and whilst it was great that those available stepped up, I am hopeful that we will welcome one or two back today. Competition for places is always a good thing especially as come January we could see a full re-start of the league following the latest FA Guidance that clubs in Tier 3 areas can now admit spectators. Anyway, enjoy today’s game and I hope to see you again next Saturday when we conclude our Christmas triple header when Irchester United visit the Sett. Despite the break Bugbrooke were missing a number of regulars from the match-day squad including Goalkeeper Antonio, skipper Caton, Power, Hall, Diamond and new signing Ryan Lovell who was serving the first of a 3-match suspension. In front of a sparse crowd a downpour just before kick off made for a difficult playing surface, something that was evident from the off with players from both teams struggling to maintain their footing. It was Whitworths who settled the better and they almost went ahead inside the opening minutes when a low shot from the edge of the box drew a fine fingertip save from Jamie Sykes in the Bugbrooke goal; the faintest of touches saw the ball clip the base of the far post and go behind for a corner. It came somewhat against the run of play when Bugbrooke took the lead, a free kick from half-way was flicked on to Drinkwater who evaded a couple of challenges inside the box before firing low into the net.

This seemed to settle the Badgers and whilst Whitworths were still enjoying the majority of the possession it was Bugbrooke who looked the most likely to score.

Unfortunately for Whitworths that was as good as it got as any hopes of a comeback were extinguished minutes later when Burrows found the corner with a fine shot from the edge of the area.

With the half hour approaching Whitworths were punished for playing a high line as Burrows found himself through with just the keeper to beat. Having had a rush of blood to the head the keeper came racing out of his box which allowed Burrows to square the ball to Drinkwater who, despite appeals for offside, had the simplest of tasks to finish into an empty net from the edge of the box.

And soon after this all hope vanished as Drinkwater completed a deserved hattrick with another excellent finish.

With a two-goal cushion Bugbrooke ended the half strongly and went close to a third with the final kick of the half when a shot from just inside the area clipped the base of the post. HALF TIME BUGBROOKE ST MICHAELS - 2 WELLINGBOROUGH WHITWORTHS - 0 Two nil is often referred to as a dangerous score line where the next goal is deemed crucial. Well, it was Whitworths who scored that goal as a clever free kick from the angle of the box saw the ball rolled square where a placed shot found the bottom corner of the net, game on?!

There was almost a fourth for Drinky as he found himself clean through although perhaps, he got too clever as his chipped finish allowed the keeper to make a comfortable save. With a three-goal cushion and perhaps with one eye on Saturday manager Forrest rang the changes as the match as a contest drifted towards its conclusion. The game ended on a sour note when a Whitworths player was shown a straight red card for what appeared to be the intent of an overly aggressive studs up challenge on Sykes. AROUND THE UCL Premier Division with

several teams opting out there was very little mid-week action. Anstey Nomads maintained their place at the top of the table following a 2-0 win at mid-table Harborough Town in a match that was played behind closed doors. Elsewhere Quorn narrowly beat ON Chenecks 3-2 to maintain their push at the top end of the table.

game against Wellingborough Whitworths the only mid-week game attention turns to today where a win over mid-table Huntingdon Town would see us move into the top four. Elsewhere in the division Irchester United make the trip to Whittlesey Athletic in the days only other game. With the news that clubs located in Tier 3 areas can now welcome supporters we hope to see more teams re-starting fixtures in the not-too-distant future.

Reserve Division football returned at the weekend and there were wins for Desborough Town, ON Chenecks, Newport Pagnell and Rothwell Corinthians. All of which mean it is now extremely tight at the top of the division with just FIVE points separating leaders Desborough from ourselves in fifth place. Newport Pagnell remain unbeaten and would appear to be the team to beat, they currently sit in fourth place, five points off the summit although with three games in hand. GOALSCORER

BRIAN FARRELL â€“ DESBOROUGH TOWN

TODAYS VISITORS Huntingdon Town Football Club were formed in 1995 following a move from the West Anglian League to the Cambs League. Prior to entry to the Cambs League Division 2B for the 1996-97 season, Town were known as Sun FC and originally began life back in 1980 as the Montagu which was formed by the current Secretary Russell Yezek. The committee decided that they wished to progress in local football and therefore chose to resurrect the then defunct name of Huntingdon Town. Progress was soon made both on & off the field.

The Club moved to their new site at Jubilee Park in 2003 & this enabled work to be undertaken to provide the facilities necessary for the continued progression of the Club. The team moved to play in the UCL Division 1, having transferred from the Cambs league at the end of the 2002/2003 season. The first four seasons in the United Counties League were something of a learning curve for Town, reflected in their league positions of 17th, 14th, 12th & 14th respectively. The 2007-2008 saw the 1st Team finish 4th only missing out on promotion by goal difference & the Reserves win the Reserve Division 2 Title & win the Hunts Benevolent Cup. Huntingdon Town also run an Under 18 side in the Ridgeons Youth League. All three teams play their home games at the Clubs Jubilee Park ground on Kings Ripton Road, In July 2004 the new ÂŁ37,000 floodlighting system was opened with a match against Peterborough United which attracted a near 1000 crowd. The new ÂŁ1.1 million Clubhouse was open for the 2009-2010 season however the only success on the field being the all conquering U18 team, winning the League, League Cup & County Cup.

Optimism turned to joy in 2011-2012 with Town winning the United Counties League Division 1 Title, scoring over 100 goals in the process. The 2012-2013 season saw Town finish 4th in their first season in the Premier again scoring over 100 goals & reaching the Hunts Senior Cup Final drawing 0-0 with St Neots Town before losing on Penalties. A second 50-seater stand was also erected. The 2015-2016 season saw Town finish bottom of the league for the first time in their history, however due to circumstances they held on to their position in the UCL Premier Division Their reprieve was short-lived as the 2016-2017 season saw Town finish bottom of the league for the second year running, this time they were relegated to Division 1 where they have remained since.

A professional performance away in Northamptonshire saw Mansfield’s under18s progress to the second round of the FA Youth Cup after running out 3-0 winners in a fiery contest against Bugbrooke St. Michaels. The Stags were on top from the off, and striker Jack Deakin put Mansfield ahead early in the second half. A red card for midfielder Jonty Bouch in the 73rdminute gave the Badgers hope of an equaliser, but Mansfield’s young guns stood strong in the face of adversity before a goal from Ethan Hill and a wonderful solo effort from Diego Edwards sealed the victory. The home crowd whipped up a hostile atmosphere at The Sett, Bugbrooke’s home ground, and a full-blooded first ten minutes saw attacker Shamar Lawson pick up a yellow card as both teams looked to impose themselves on the match. As the game settled, it was Mansfield that quickly took control, with the Stags enjoying the lion’s share of possession as they looked to break down the Northamptonshire Senior Youth League side’s defence. Forward Nathan Caine caused problems all night long and was heavily involved in the early stages, with the striker first seeing his goal-bound effort blocked in the 13th minute before just over-hitting a cross with Deakin lurking at the far post. A rare foray forward for Bugbrooke in the 20th minute saw a dangerous cross from the right-hand side fizz across the Stags’ six-yard box, but right-back Taylor Anderson did enough to hook the ball past his front post and out for a corner. More good play from the Stags saw Caine, Deakin and Lawson combine well in the final third, and this time it was Lawson who set away Deakin down the right. The striker’s dangerous driven cross was cut out, but the loose ball fell to leftback Cody Collins whose looping cross almost caught out Bugbrooke ‘keeper James Ward..

Fellow striker Deakin went closest to breaking the deadlock in the 36th minute, but his effort from distance went narrowly wide after he was set away down the right. The teams went in level at the interval, with some excellent last-ditch defending from the pumped-up home side keeping the Stags at bay. And after just three minutes of the second-half, the Stags had to contend with another break in play as floodlight failure saw the pitch plunged into darkness. But the pause did nothing to dampen Mansfield’s youngsters’ appetite and they turned on the style as the light returned ten minutes later.

And two minutes later Stags ‘keeper Maison Campbell was called into action to deny the opposition their best chance of an equaliser. The Badgers won a free-kick 25 yards from goal, and Bugbrooke winger Jake Webster stepped up and unleashed a dipping effort that was destined for the top corner - only for the fingertips of Campbell to push the ball onto the crossbar to keep the Stags ahead. Just a minute later and Mansfield were down to ten men as a second yellow for Bouch saw the midfielder dismissed with fifteen minutes remaining. Bugbrooke were revitalised after the sending off and pumped the ball into the box in search of an equaliser, but Mansfield’s defence stood strong against the Badgers’ aerial onslaught.

And with 85 minutes on the clock, progress to the second round was all but confirmed for Mansfield.

First Caine shot just wide of the far post after a good turn in the box, before a moment of inspiration from Collins created the opening goal.

The Stags won a free-kick in the Bugbrooke half, and Hill’s delivery was cleared only as far as the edge of the area.

The left-back picked the ball up inside his own half before a marauding run down the left took him past two defenders and opened up a crossing opportunity.

The midfielder charged onto the loose ball and lashed the ball under the goalkeeper to double the Stags’ lead.

The defender fizzed in a low cross and Deakin was there to meet it, thundering home from close-range past the helpless Ward to make it 1-0.

But Ward was on hand to deny the Stags in the 65thminute as they almost made it 2-0. A surging run from Colt Reynolds saw the attacker get in behind the Bugbrooke defence, but the goalkeeper palmed away the substitute’s effort as he tried to squeeze the ball home from a narrow angle. The rebound fell to Lawson, but he was unable to hit the target from closerange. Tensions heightened as the game progressed with the home side desperate to get back into the game, and central midfielder Bouch went in the referee’s book in the 70th minute after halting a Bugbrooke counter-attack.

And five minutes later substitute Diego Edwards was on hand to provide a moment of magic to put the result beyond doubt. The substitute chested down a long punt forward on the edge of the area before flicking the ball over the head of his defender and lashing the bouncing ball into the roof of the net, as the Stags’ ended the game on a high. REPORT FROM FINBARR CARROLL Having not played a game for a month, Bugbrooke hosted Mansfield Town at the Sett in this FA Youth Cup game with both sides knowing that the winners would be playing Stoke City in the 3rd Round should they win against Burton Albion in the next round, with the competition getting totally out of kilter because of the current situation we find ourselves in at this present time. A large crowd was in attendance on what was a miserable rainy night, but a lot of hardy souls were prepared to venture up The Sett to give their support. Amongst the crowd were scouts from 11 football league clubs. The Stags kicked off and were on the attack straight away and winning a corner-kick. The corner was defended by the Badgers clearing the ball, but only finding Stags midfielder Jonty Bouch on the left wing who was fouled. Again, the danger of a ball into the Badgers box was defended. Bugbrooke's Ion Borta, having received a pass to him, went on a run forward when first he got a Mansfield defenders boot to his mouth but realising he was not going to get a free-kick, carried on his run until he was eventually hauled down and the Stags had a free-kick awarded against them. The kick taken by Aidan Webster saw the ball hit high into the Mansfield box finding the head of team-mate Munashe Tichawona, Tichawona header went to the floor causing a moments panic to the Stags but the ball came off a Mansfield players shin and ran out for a Badgers corner-kick. Mansfield were able to defend the corner when it was taken. We were seeing a number of fouls, mostly on Badgers players and a lot of them happening around the halfway line. We eventually got our first yellow card when Stags player Sharmar Lawson was deemed to have fouled Badgers midfielder Aidan Webster by referee Martyn Gospel. The subsequent free-kick was defended by the Stags. Mansfield were themselves awarded a freekick on the halfway line, the kick was knocked into the Badgers penalty area where it was met by Bugbrooke keeper James Ward who leapt higher than those around him to get a fist to the ball, the ball ended up with Mansfield who forced a corner-kick.

We saw some nice skill from Mansfield captain Nathan Caine in the Badgers box, but after going past a couple of defenders, was unable to get a shot on target. Caine was also unable to get the ball on target minutes later from a free-kick from just outside the Badgers penalty area.

A ball from Badgers midfielder Borta found colleague Tichawona in the Stags box but his headed effort, downwards and goal-wards, touched a Mansfield boot and dribbled across the goal line, like it was in slow motion, where it crossed the by-line for a corner.

A chance fell to Stags forward Sharmar Lawson, but the effort from him went wide.

There were a few chances being created by both sides with Mansfield's Jack Deakin and Sharmar Lawson coming close. Badgers Corey Pert and Jake Webster were constantly looking to get the ball forward, their teammate Ion Borta was putting himself about all over the place and not missing a tackle. Munashe Ticchawona, Eddie Panter and Pearce Jones were a constant threat to the Stags defence.

Mansfield then had another player booked when Jonty Bouch fouled Bugbrooke's Aidan Webster.

Just before half-time, Mansfield had a spate of corner-kicks, with the first being defended, the second seeing a header from Stags forward Jack Deakin again defended and the third kick being defended superbly by Badger Charlie Olive from under the bar.

With half-time looming, Bugbrooke won another free-kick but the shot when taken by Aidan Webster, saw his effort go over the bar. Half-time 0-0. At half-time, Bugbrooke made their first substitute of the game bringing on Liam Isaac for Pearce Jones. A free-kick to Bugbrooke, again around the halfway line, saw a lovely ball floated into the Mansfield penalty area by Archie Chorlton, with everyone on the left side of the Mansfield box, Chorlton hit the ball in the direction of the right of the Stags defence with Eddie Panter first to react, but he couldn't gather the ball under his full control and the ball ended up as a goal-kick. A minute later, Chorlton was back on free-kick duty from around the same position as the last, this time his kick was defended by Stags midfielder Jonty Bouch. Four minutes into the second half the floodlights on the dugouts side of the pitch went out, but thankfully it only took eight minutes to rectify the problem and the match continued with a throw-in to Bugbrooke. Mansfield then had their captain Nathan Caine booked for a foul on Badgers Corey Pert. The deadlock was finally broken when a run down the Mansfield left wing by Cody Collins, with Bugbrooke expecting Mansfield to kick the ball out of play with Bugbrooke's Ion Borta injured on the floor, saw Collins lay off team-mate Jack Deakin who fired low at goal with some power and managing to squeeze the ball between Badgers keeper Ward and the upright of the goal. 0-1. It was Mansfield with the next chance of the game with an effort from Caine, but this time Ward was able to make a fine save.

Bugbrooke then made a substitution bringing on Sam Morrow for Corey Pert.

A good run from Mansfield's Cody Collins, this time through the centre of the field saw him finally getting tackled and Bugbrooke were able to get the ball up-field.

A free-kick from around 25 yards, saw a fine shot on goal from Jake Webster and with the ball about to nestle in the net, Stags keeper Maison Campbell took a flying leap to his left and got his right hand to the ball to the ball superbly, knocking the ball onto the crossbar and away to safety. Not long after receiving his first yellow card, Mansfield's Jonty Bouch was seeing yellow for the second time and then red for a foul on Badgers Jake Webster. With Mansfield down to ten men and with time ticking away, Bugbrooke had a few chances with their captain Ben Dimond urging his side forward at every opportunity. A Bugbrooke corner-kick, taken by Liam Isaac caught out Mansfield keeper Campbell who might have been expecting a high ball to be swung in, but was able to get to his near post when the kick from Isaac went short and Campbell was able to clear with his boot. A fine tackle on the Mansfield edge of the area by Tichawona winning the ball back of a Mansfield defender saw Tichawona cross to colleague Panter, but Panter was unable to gather the ball and Mansfield cleared the danger. Bugbrooke had their first player booked when Aidan Webster fouled Stags forward Nathan Caine on the edge of the Badgers penalty area. Webster's younger brother Jake was then joining him in the referees book along with Mansfield's Colt Reynolds for a bit of after's. The free-kick, taken by Ethan Hill, saw his shot defended with the ball falling back at his left foot, Hill then rifled the ball on target and with a packed box in front of him, managed to get the ball through everyone and into the net. 02 Mansfield then made a sub, I didn't get the number of who went on, but number 18 Diego Edwards entering the fray. It was only moments later that with practically his first touch, Edwards collected the ball with his back to the Bugbrooke goal and lobbed the defender in front of him and volleyed the ball into the corner of the net leaving keeper Ward with no chance in reaching the ball. Final score Bugbrooke 0 Mansfield 3. So Mansfield progress into the next round to face Burton Albion. A three nil loss was harsh on Bugbrooke when at one time, when losing one nil, an equaliser was on the cards. With Bugbrooke being positive and pushing forward, to concede 2 goals in the last five minutes was tough. Bugbrooke more than matched Mansfield and to a man gave 110% effort.
