THE GAFFER Firstly, I’d like to extend a warm welcome to the players, officials and supporters of Wellingborough Whitworths who are this evenings visitors to the Sett. Its great to be back, especially under the lights, following the latest lockdown and with three home games to look forward to over the coming weeks it promises to be a busy run up to Christmas. We went into the lockdown on the back of a well deserved 4-2 win over Birstall United. It was a tricky fixture on paper hence I was delighted to come away with the points, especially as the game came on the back of a disappointing loss in the Vase in a game that I believe we deserved to win given the performance. I’d like to take the opportunity to formally welcome striker Ryan Lovell to the club. Ryan who joins us from Irchester United is a fantastic addition to the squad. He is a player with proven track record at this level and above. I am sure that he will enhance our squad as we look to get ourselves back into the promotion picture. Not for the first time I’d like to sign off by wishing the Under 18s ‘Good Luck’ as they welcome Mansfield Town to the Sett in the First Round of the FA Youth Cup on Thursday night. Les get behind the lads and make it a night to remember. Anyway, enjoy the game and I hope to see you again on Saturday when we welcome Huntingdon Town to the Sett. Your support, especially in the current climate is vital. Jamie
‘Ryan is a fantastic addition; he is a player with a proven track record at this level and above’

MATCH REPORT BUILDBASE FA VASE - ROUND 1 SATURDAY 31 OCTOBER
1-2 SPENCER (24’)
THE TEAM AGUILAR ROHAN, STANBRIDGE, CATON (Capt.), CALVIN GREEN, LEE, SPENCER, WHITE, POWER, DRINKWATER, BURROWS, DIAMOND SUBS: HARRISON, PANTER, WEBSTER Stanway Rovers were today’s visitors to the Sett for a First-Round game in the FA Vase.
Kieran Spencer scoring the goal with a lovely curled finish into the far top corner from the edge of the penalty box.
On paper this looked a difficult assignment with the Badgers underdogs against a team plying their trade in the Step 5 Eastern Counties Premier Division.
Minutes later the lead was almost doubled when the hard-working Burrows forced a fine tip over from the visiting keeper.
With six regulars missing and a possible hangover from Wednesday nights game at Buckby the Badgers were hoping it wouldn’t be a Halloween nightmare. From the kick-off there was a noticeable difference with the Badgers having reverted to last seasons tried and tested system as Tom Caton and Jason Lee forming a central defensive partnership with Calvin Green sweeping up behind. This also meant a first start of the season for young Kieran Spencer who stepped up from the Reserves to fill the left wing back role whilst youngsters Aiden Webster and Eddie Panter took their places on the bench. Bugbrooke settled well and looked solid defensively as they took the game to their opponents. They went close on a number of occasions however with balls flashing across the face of goal no one was on hand to apply a finishing touch. On 24 minutes the deadlock was broken, and it was a deserved lead for the Badgers.
1-0 approaching the interval was the least that the Badgers deserved for their efforts. With the clock well into injury time (not sure where the time came from) disaster struck as a ball into the box caused confusion and was only half cleared to the edge of the box where the visiting player was on hand to drive a low shot into the net via the aid of a slight deflection. The half time whistle was blown as soon as the restart was taken. HALF TIME BUGBROOKE ST MICHAELS - 1 STANWAY ROVERS – 1 The second half started in bizarre fashion with Bugbrooke having the kick-off Stanway somehow found themselves through on goal, from a distance I can only assume that the Bugbrooke protests were due to a Stanway player being in the Bugbrooke half when the kick-off was taken. Anyway, Antonio made a strong save and the danger was cleared. This signaled the best spell of the game for the visitors and for ten minutes Bugbrooke had their backs to the wall.
Having weathered that storm Bugbrooke almost snatched the lead when a fine run and cross by Benny Drinkwater was met by the onrushing Burrows however his effort on the stretch flew over the bar. From this point on Bugbrooke pushed for a winner with Stanway limited to break away’s, all of which were well dealt with by the Badgers rearguard. Unable to make the most of their possession and chances Bugbrooke were dealt a sucker punch this despite best endeavors to keep the ball out of the net. The goal came when a powerful swerving shot from distance was too hot to handle. The initial save fell to the onrushing striker who looked destined to score however Antonio was up quickly and brave to block the follow up. The danger wasn’t cleared with a third effort miraculously cleared off the line by a defender although only to a Stanway player who at the fourth time of asking found the roof of the net. Undeserved and with time running out the Badgers had it all to do. The effort and commitment was there, chances were created however Stanway stood firm and its they who go into the hat for Monday’s Second Round Draw. ALTERNATIVE VIEW Birstall Manager Jim Dodd on their 4-2 loss against Bugbrooke We went into the game full of confidence after a couple of back-to-back wins but also knowing a lot about these and their style. A big physical side that get the ball forwards quickly. We mentioned in the team talk before hand not give free kicks away or needless corners as this was an area they were strong in As the game started, we found ourselves in an early lead with a lovely flat pinged cross from right back Dre, which found Vyce at the back stick to bring down and tap in from close range. A good start for us and we were happy For me, we then took our foot off a little and started to give away those needless freekicks and corners we mentioned not to in the team talk. It wasn’t too long after when they finally punished us for it as a floated ball into the box for their No10 to head home unmarked from 6 yards out. Poor defending on our part and it’s 1-1 Again, not too long after that we gave away more dead balls to them and from a corner this time had them 2-1 up with again a free header from their No6. Very disappointing from our point of view defensively but maybe the fair score line judging how the first half went
The half time team talk pretty much went as expected with us mentioning again not to give away unnecessary free kicks and to not leave players unmarked when defending. We also knew where we could get ourselves back into the game and the 2nd half seemed to work well with that. We got our skipper into the game more and things started to happen. Started brighter and before too long we created a chance in their box which Higgo went to strike but was hauled down to give us a penalty. Vycey stepped up and slotted home with the keeper nearly saving but gladly for us found the net. 2-2 and we want to push on then and keep solid throughout Unfortunately, within a few minutes a ball into our box was fumbled by our keeper Charlie and dropped to their forward who tapped into an empty net. Not what we wanted at all, but mistakes happen, so we tried to get our heads up and go again We battled well throughout the 2nd half but couldn’t quite get a leveler. Pushing men forward the last 10 minutes we knew we’d leave ourselves open, but we had to go for it. Some good spells during this time but then with a couple of minutes to go a lazy bit of play in the middle gave them the ball in our half which was slotted through the Bugbrooke forward who finished with ease
Game over which was disappointing as we felt from our part all 4 goals were gifted to them which you can do to any side in this league and especially to a good side like Bugbrooke. We enjoyed the game though, had some banter with their bench (mainly about the ref) and got on well with them also We wish Bugbrooke all the best going into our mid season COVID break and we hope everyone stays safe.
Young Bugbrooke Reserves supporter Jake Nash on their 3-1 win against Irchester United Reserves Today we visited Irchester to see if we could get another 3 points. Bugbrooke started really strong and I thought we dominated for the majority of the game.
We went 1-0 up quite early on with a great header from Jimmy Moore, the cross into the box from Webby was awesome! Irchester equalised not too long before half time. Second half the Bugbrooke boys came out and worked really hard in horrible wind and rain and fought really well. Our second goal was from Luca, no 5 and the third from Durrel with a nice bit of skill and a chip over the keeper. We could have had more but the Irchester defence worked really hard to keep us out, so well done to them. Irchester did have a few chances but were unable to score. It was another enjoyable afternoon of football for me, I love going to watch my Dad play and to see Roy and the rest of the Bugbrooke boys play football on Saturdays! I really missed it during lockdown, but my weekends are great again now my footballs back and my Dad’s football is back and my Mum has started playing again too! It was nice to have some of the ladies team come over to watch for a bit today, if anyone hasn’t got plans on a Sunday afternoon you should watch Bugbrooke ladies play, they are awesome! I want to wish Irchester best of luck on their next games and hope everyone stays safe.
COVID UPDATE Colleagues I am writing to keep you all informed as to the result of the survey of clubs carried out over the weekend to today. In addition, and following the information from the survey, a meeting of the Directors was held this morning and after a meeting of the Step 5/6 Chairman tonight, we had an update meeting of the Directors again this evening. To be brief of the 40 clubs in Premier and Division one the split for clubs wanting to play and not wanting to play was about 50/50.
A decision, by simple majority of the Directors, was that we would allow those clubs who wished to play, to do so and Roger Walker will provide details of how he will arrange fixtures shortly. We will keep matters under review especially following the next update from the Government after 16th December. Further to the email sent to you this evening by Roger Walker regarding the statement from the FA it is clear that all clubs in Tier 2 currently should lobby their Local Authorities to request a clear understanding that food/Hot & Cold drinks served through a hatch or by Catering unit and taken away could be allowed. Every LA could be different, so it is well worth the question to maybe help a little with finances. The Board is extremely grateful and has full understanding of all the comments made by the clubs, but no matter what decision we made there will always be 50% who would not have agreed.

AROUND THE UCL Premier Division football
was back with a bang at the weekend with unbeaten Quorn registering a 9-1 win over a Desborough Town team who were probably wishing that they were still in lockdown! Three of our teams made it to through to Round 3 of the FA Vase, there were wins for Anstey Nomads, Shepshed Dynamo and Wellingborough Town. GOALSCORER

Division One despite the UK
being in a lockdown it hasn’t prevented stopped the managerial merry go round with two of our Division 1 rivals having seen a changing on the guard. Wilkins Makate takes the reigns at Huntingdon Town with Mark Forrest taking the role at Irchester United. Following a vote, it has been confirmed that the following clubs along with ourselves will commence fixtures following the latest lockdown – Huntingdon Town, Irchester United, Long Buckby, Melton Town, Wellingborough Whitworths, Whittlesey Athletic.
Reserve Division football returned at the weekend and there were wins for Desborough Town, ON Chenecks, Newport Pagnell and Rothwell Corinthians. All of which mean it is now extremely tight at the top of the division with just FIVE points separating leaders Desborough from ourselves in fifth place. Newport Pagnell remain unbeaten and would appear to be the team to beat, they currently sit in fourth place, five points off the summit although with three games in hand. GOALSCORER

TODAYS VISITORS Wellingborough Whitworths are this evenings visitors to the Sett for a United Counties League encounter. Formed in 1973 as a result of the disbanding of Wellingborough Ideal Clothiers Football Club the club began life in the Rushden and District League with limited success. However, in the season of 1975/76, their third year, the Club were crowned League Champions. This feat was repeated the following year, when in that season (1976/77), the team dropped only 8 points from 30 games.
As a result of their success, the Club were moved into the East Midlands Alliance Premier Division, where they played for 8 years. Whilst they never won the title, they did finish as high as 2nd and were winners of the “Munton Cup on two occasions. In 1985, with extensive ground improvements completed, Whitworth FC were accepted into the United Counties League Division One. In the season of 2002/03, when facing extreme financial difficulties, the Football Club committee was reorganised with several new faces brought in. What followed was steady progression which culminated in Whitworths winning the Division 1 title at the end of the 2006/07 season under the guidance of Joe Smythe. They did so by going unbeaten throughout the campaign, a feat not achieved at this level in over 100 years. A youth section was also added to the club with 5 teams playing in the Weetabix league
MANAGER: James Mallows LEAGUE POS: 15th P11 W3 D3 L5 LAST FIVE: LLLLL
The 2009/10 season saw Wellingborough Whitworth take significant strides in attempting to move the club to another level. The Club had floodlights installed, a 100-seater stand, a walkway around the whole of the pitch, and called it The Victoria Mill Ground, this ensured that the ground grading was in place for promotion.
STAR PLAYER: KOBI BIVENS
The 2011/12 season was bittersweet as on October 18th 2011 their clubhouse was destroyed by arsonists, however the Reserves ended the Season as Northants Lower Junior Cup winners as well as UCL Reserve League Cup winners.
14 APPEARANCES 9 GOALS
The 2014/15 season saw a new clubhouse open however fortunes on the pitch were not so good as the First Team finished in seventh position and the Reserve in eighth. The following season was no better as the First Team finished in fifteenth place and the Reserves in last! Prior to the 2016/17 season, club stalwart Dave Woodley passed away but in a fitting memory to him the First Team under James Mallows leadership, finished the season in the Runners Up position and gained promotion to the UCL Premier Division for the first time. The Reserves ended the season in fourth place but once again won the Northants Lower Junior Cup. Two years in the Premier League proved interesting before the side were relegated at the end of the 2018/19 season, Division 1 is where they have remained since.
