Master Frisan starts a new series of DVDs on the best Kyusho points for different situations. In this first installment, of 2 volumes, we focus the study on the defense against the main arm attacks: grabs, thrusts and punches. We will analyze the solutions against grabs and thrusts to understand the basic principles of Kyusho and then we will analyze the solutions against direct fist strikes such as the Jab and the Cross, and circular strikes such as the hook. Dermatome stimuli, pressure points and various exercises are discussed in order to train and learn. The exercises are performed by M° Gianluca Frisan, and his instructors from CSEN / Kyusho Institute because, in order to master Kyusho, it is necessary to train with as many people as possible, with different bodies, and with different reactions and sensitivities. I am sensitive, like everyone else, to the human dramas that war entails, but judging it in emotional terms has never helped to put it in the place it belongs, especially when the point of origin of that questioning, its point of evaluation, comes from a mannered society, complacent and given itself to the god of comfort. Anyone who has been raised in cotton wool would consider the magnificent straw mattress on which I slept as a child, there at my grandparents' house, back in Lisbon, as a martyrdom. Everything is relative, and each one perceives the world from the height in which he or she stands to contemplate it, which is none other than that of his or her own personal level. War is the failure of diplomacy, they say, but it is no less true, that all diplomacy is based on deterrence. When interests converge in dissonance, there are decisions that unequivocally lead to confrontation. The opposite of war is not peace. Old troubles, old demands; nationalism, imperialism, the divergence of interests; the obstinacy and arrogance of the leaders, who instead of being commanded, they like to command in others; the personal importance disguised in eloquent reasons. Perversion and stubbornness. Those at the top of the pyramid should serve to be served, but tyranny is always too palatable a harvest. efore doing it in detail, let's learn something important for the study of Kyusho Jitsu! I can use the nomenclature of acupuncture pressure points to understand the location of the weakest areas of the human body, and / or I can study the anatomy to understand in depth the structures we are going to attack. We have done this in all my previous DVDs… but today we will discover the dermatomes. The nervous system is the set of organs and structures that allow to transmit signals between the different parts of the body and to coordinate its actions and its voluntary and involuntary functions, both physical and psychological.

Briefly, the nervous system is anatomically organized in: • Central Nervous System (CNS), which includes the brain and spinal cord. • Peripheral Nervous System (PNS), includes the cranial nerves originating from the brain and the spinal nerves emerging from the spinal cord. The Peripheral Nervous System itself is divided into two main parts: • Somatic Nervous System, responsible for voluntary responses: The Somatic Nervous System consists of peripheral nerve fibers that send sensitive information to the Central Nervous System and motor nerve fibers. Motor nerves control muscles, sensory nerves monitor pain, temperature, and location. Many of the Kyusho attacks involve attacks on the peripheral nervous system, stimulating the somatic nervous system. Attention must be paid to the fact that the somatic nervous system has neurological connections with the autonomic nerves of the internal organs. This aspect is very important because the stimulation of the somatic nervous system can affect the autonomic nervous system, causing fainting, but not only that. • Autonomous Nervous System, AKA Vegetative Nervous System, responsible for involuntary responses.

The Autonomous Nervous System is in turn divided into two parts with antagonistic action: • Sympathetic (thoracic - lumbar); The Sympathetic arises in the spinal cord. It stimulates the heart, dilates the bronchi, contracts the arteries and inhibits the digestive system, prepares the body for physical activity. • Parasympathetic (craniosacral). The Parasympathetic is a system that predisposes to nutrition, digestion, sleep and rest. The Autonomous Nervous System controls the smooth muscles of the viscera and glands. In Kyusho, it's essential to understand that each organ can be stimulated, increasing activity, or controlled, decreasing activity from the autonomic system through the sympathetic and parasympathetic. Peripheral nerves send messages to the spinal nerves and the spinal cord. The sympathetic nervous system and internal organs also connect to the spinal cord. At different levels of the spinal cord, these systems converge.

Kyusho Jitsu To get professional information, on the DVD we have the honor of having an intervention by: Dr. Tel Alessandro, Doctor in specialist training in maxillofacial surgery Instructor at Kyusho Institute In general, however, we can say here that: The dermatomes are cutaneous regional references, with which the human body is ideally divided, starting from the spinal nerves and continuing with the relative innervation. A single dermatome, therefore, is a skin region that begins where the spinal nerve originates and extends to the entire area on which the spinal nerve exercises its sensory functions. A dermatome therefore corresponds to each spinal nerve, except in the case of the spinal nerve C1 and the spinal nerve Co1, to which no dermatome corresponds. The C1 and Co1 nerves are located respectively at the beginning (cervical area) and at the end (coccygeal) of the spine.

Spinal nerves belong to the peripheral nervous system and originate from the ventral and dorsal roots of the spinal cord. The spinal nerves connect the organs with the central nervous system which in turn carries information to the muscles, glands, skin area and internal organs. The dermatomes then map the body in circumscribed areas and are each innervated by a corresponding spinal root of a spinal nerve. A dermatome is attributed to each of the 31 spinal segments. The nerves, which transmit sensations to the brain from a specific area of the body, are identifiable according to the following subdivision: • 8 cervical spinal nerves, from whose innervation the corresponding dermatomes are identified (except the first). The spinal nerves are identified with acronyms ranging from C1 to C8. Only the C1 cervical spinal nerves do not have a corresponding dermatome. • 12 thoracic spinal nerves, identified with the letter T followed by a figure ranging from 1 to 12. Each spinal nerve is associated with its own dermatome.

Kyusho Jitsu • 5 lumbar spinal nerves, whose identification follows the progressive code from L1 to L5 and each with its own reference dermatome. • 5 sacral spinal nerves, each with its own dermatome, identified as dermatome S1, dermatome S2, and so on up to dermatome S5. • 1 coccygeal spinal nerve, recognized with the initials Co1 and which has no reference dermatomes. In order to facilitate the study of Kyusho, we will analyze the pressure points that we are going to attack from the chest. Then we will progress on thrusts and punches.

SECTION 1: From a chest grip: Analyzing the dermatomes, what interests us is to understand that by attaching the arms we are able to send a stimulus to the spinal nerves, hence the impulse goes to the brain which processes a response; if the impulse is very intense the response is automatic without being reprocessed from the brain.

1st group - ARMS: The action on the pressure points of the arms generates a neurological impulse on the cervical spinal nerves 5/6/7/8 / and on the thoracic spinal nerves 1, depending on the stimulated area. The same action generates stimuli to organs such as the heart and lungs, and this applies to all points of the arms. The radial nerve with effects on the cervical spinal nerves segment 5 corresponds to the pressure points such as: Lung 5 - 8 The radial nerve with effects on the cervical spinal nerve segment 6 matches the pressure points such as: Large intestine 10 - 12 Triple Heater 5 - 11 - 12 The median nerve with effects on the thoracic spinal nerves segment 1 corresponds to the pressure points such as: Pericardium 6 - 2 The ulnar nerve with effects on the thoracic spinal nerves segment 1 corresponds to the pressure points such as: Heart 6 - 2

The action on the pressure points of the legs in the lateral and frontal area generates a

Kyusho Jitsu neurological impulse on the lumbar spinal nerves from segment 2 to 5. The action on the pressure points of the legs in the posterior area generates a neurological impulse on the sacral spinal nerves segment 1 The femoral and tibial nerves with effects on the lumbar spinal nerves segment 2 and 3 correspond to the pressure points such as: Inner thigh Spleen 11 on and Liver 9 (femoral nerve) with effects on the spinal nerves segment 2 and also on various organs including the bladder. We also have an action on the femoral vein and artery. Inner leg Spleen 6 (tibial nerve) with effects on lumbar spinal nerves segment 4 and on the great saphenous vein External thigh Biliary bladder 31 (femoral nerves) with effects on the lumbar spinal nerves segment 3. There are no direct effects on the organs. Posterior Urinary Bladder 55 - 56 - 57 have effects on segment 1 sacral spinal nerves. The purpose of this DVD is not to delve into difficult medical terms or nomenclature, but to understand where neurological stimuli act at the level of the spinal nerves and therefore on the spinal cord and understand the basic correlations.

3rd group - TRUNK: The action on the torso pressure points generates a neurological impulse on the thoracic spinal nerves from segment 1 to segment 12 depending on the stimulated area. Trunk points are among the most difficult to handle, because in many areas they are well protected by the chest bones or strong abdominal muscles, and because withstand constant pressure. Here, to have a good effect, the action must be fast, penetrating and generated by what we call a force multiplier. As we have already seen in the previous DVDs -

it's essential to repeat it for it's the cornerstone of the whole system -, mastering Kyusho requires knowing which are the pressure points (right location and the best angle of attack), which are the best anatomical weapons in relation to the area to be attacked (and so the position of our hands to properly place the knuckles or whatever anatomical part of the body we use if we are to success to attack the neurological and vascular system of the opponent), and finally the force multiplier, that is the knowledge of how to move the body to generate vibration and penetrating power, so that you can squeeze and stretch the nerves. The effect on segment 5 thoracic spinal nerves is obtained by stimulation on the fifth intercostal nerves in correspondence with the dermatome that refers to pressure points such as: Conception Vessel 14 (solar plexus - from T 5 to T 9) - Kidney 22 - Stomach 18 - Spleen 17 and Gall bladder 23.

Kyusho Jitsu All these points have better angles of attack, but their localization by marking the line of the dermatomes is extremely easy. The effect on the nerves is not only on organs such as the heart and lungs. The entire back, especially near the spine, is one of the most vulnerable and dangerous areas of the human body. Near the origin of the spinal nerves, lateral to the spinal column, are all the pressure points associated with the internal organs. This topic requires an entirely DVD dedicated to it, a job that very probably we will undertake in the near future. To give just a hint, we can say that the Bladder 13 pressure point is associated with the lung and has effects on the segment 3 thoracic spinal nerves, Bladder 14 pressure point is associated with the pericardium and affects the segment 4 thoracic spinal nerves, Bladder 15 pressure point is associated with the heart and affects the segment 5 thoracic spinal nerves, However, we will dedicate a specific DVD, perhaps in collaboration with GM Mark Kline, my Master for more than 20 years, in addition to GM Evan Pantazi and GM Jim Corn, both of them my Masters for over 10 years. Analyzing the dermatomes, what interests us is understanding that by attacking the torso we are able to send a stimulus in the area between T1 and the first lumbar muscles. From here the impulse goes to the brain which processes a response; if the impulse is intense the response is automatic without being processed by the brain. In addition, the neurological system stimulated first in the cervical area (arms), and then in the lumbar area (legs), believes that the pain is in the middle between these two areas ... that is, the thoracic area (torso) Cranial nerves are then stimulated by all the head points, of which in this DVD we will only analyze the mental nerve / Triple Heater 23 - Gall Bladder 1 / Small Intestine 18, and the ear area, as there are points related to the TRIGEMINAL NERVE, which is the largest sensory nerve of the cranial nerves, and to which, along with Dr. TEL ALESSANDRO, specialized in craniofacial medicine, we will dedicate an entire next DVD. 4th group: HEAD AND NECK The action on the pressure points of the neck generates a neurological impulse at the level of the cervical spinal nerves, from segment 3 to segment 4, with effects on the brain and the diaphragm, while the action on the pressure points of the head generates a neurological impulse at the cranial nerves level, with clear effects on the brains. The effect on the cervical spinal nerves in segment 3 is obtained by stimulating pressure points such as: Urinary bladder 10, by action on the minor occipital nerve. Gall bladder 20, for action on the greater occipital nerve. Large intestine, 18, by action on the minor and accessory occipital nerve. A single dermatome around the neck. To which we can add the Stomach 9, with action on the carotid sinus, the vagus nerve or, more generally, on

the cranial nerves with effects on the heart and baroreceptors, therefore on blood pressure. SECTION 2: From pushing Foremost, managing the safety distance is essential, this topic was thoroughly addressed in our first DVD, First Encounter. I can do the same drills in advance on thrust, avoiding being grabbed and working at 3 or 4 strokes. Kyusho Jitsu that makes the opponent faint (I wish it was like that, but that’s not real!). The touch of Kyusho is a continuous flow between control / touch and Kyusho blow, or a continuous flow between manipulating / tuite and Kyusho blow. Different stimuli make it difficult for the brain to manage a lot of different information. This creates opportunities to overcome mental resistances and dynamic contractions (real weapons to resist Kyusho) and creates openings to attack the autonomic neurological system.

Since Kyusho is an exceptional self-defense system and not a combat sport, it offers its best opportunities in a scenario of grappling, pushing and single street strikes, where attacks are launched to provoke or finish, and they're not expected to go on in continuous and regulated combat. When the attacker pushes, he stretches his arms extended out, and this offers the best opportunities for a progressive Kyusho attack. Here we can do exactly the same work we did for the holds and grips... Push right or left and: 3-stroke externally. 3-stroke internally. Arms - legs - torso - head - bring to the ground ... SECTION 3: In a percussion attack If, on the other hand, the attack is a punch, the situation becomes complicated. Let's start now with a very short work on the basics of fist percussion, and we will do it according to my school of Ryukyu Kempo Kaizen Martial Arts; then each one will adapt to it with their own style or method. This will help us to have a good attack and then be able to work

with defenses and Kyusho Jitsu. Let's continue by analyzing the situation, when I see the blow coming, and I can intercept the attack line with:

1. Blocking / deflecting - redirecting Before looking at some possible actions, let's analyze the possibility of entering at once, to hit the attacker in backlash and hinder the possibility of him

We stress the important factors in positioning to defend yourself: • low chin • hands up: blocks - dodges - timing • closed elbows • keep body structure tight, arms strong • keep mandible and maxilla closed • fairly wide standing base with legs flexed and shoulder-width apart, leg tension. • keep moving, do not deliver a static target • reapply your techniques on the same attack trajectory, without lowering the arms. The significance of distance in the armed combat At Gladius Signum we specialize in the handling of bladed weapons, especially the knife, we believe that, in order to survive a knife attack, it's necessary to be familiar with stabbing and cutting weapons and the way they're used. And we stress surviving, since in a confrontation against a bladed weapon, you will almost always come away with serious injuries. That’s why knowing how to apply first aid is also of vital importance, and this is something that we will discuss at length in another article.

There is a maxim that is repeated over and over again: “The best defense against a knife threat is running away.” Well, that's true, no one can deny it. But, what if the aggressor runs faster than you? Or if you don't have a good control of the terrain, and you get into a worse situation where there happen to be more enemies... or you stumble over something that makes you fall down... or reach a dead end...? There are so many variants to keep in mind, but if we haven’t had the chance of studying the ground control, running is definitely the best choice. And what if you can't run away because you belong to the security forces, and you must protect other people? In this case, the running option is ruled out, and here's where the control of the distance in combat to try to survive comes into play. At close range, the knife can be one of the deadliest weapons out there: it's fast, lethal, and it doesn't require ammo reloads.

Let us see, for example, how distance control is used in the "Tueller's Theory", so named in the honor of Sergeant Dennis Tueller, of Salt Lake City Police Department, who after several studies determined that the minimum time in which a well-trained police officer can draw his or her weapon and shoot is 1.5 seconds. In that time, a person in normal physical conditions can cover a space between 6.5 to 7 meters long, which establishes that at such distance, the knife is even deadlier than a firearm. But let's take a deeper look... The reaction time of 1.5 seconds only fits somebody trained and versed in the handling of fire weapons; without this previous training, the time increases drastically. We must also take into account that the security forces, whether police or military, should be able to react with no hesitation as soon as they see the aggressor. A mentally alienated person might attack and draw the knife from that distance, a professional will clearly act differently. It's been also more than proven that, usually, a single shot is not immediately fatal or sufficient to stop the aggressor right away. Even if the shot would severely damage the aorta, an assailant determined to charge could keep attacking for at least five more seconds. Only one shot to the skull area would stop him in his tracks. Even if we have a firearm, we must be able to anticipate the aggression, shoot and move in the right distance and direction to try to survive. In this case, it is crucial to maintain enough distance to nullify the weapon of our aggressor, by studying geometric figures and biomechanical patterns, which helps us to know things such as, for example, that if he is right-handed, like most of the population, his stab wounds usually end up in the left lung, in the left shoulder, in the neck and even in the heart. If the aggressor crosses our death zone line, we will have to be able, through previously trained skills, to move in a short distance, but even in that situation, in order to survive, we will have to know how to control the distance and positioning, together with blocks and other techniques. Clearly, a person who isn't trained not only in the study of distance control, but also in combat skills, his chances of surviving are almost nil. The attacks with knives, razors, machetes or any other bladed weapon are fast and very violent cuts. This small and brief summary of what distance control would be, can help us see the importance of this subject, and realize how little or nothing is trained and studied. Reality is not a Hollywood movie where the hero faces any situation by going forward without fear of anything.

The problem we have in Gracie Jiu-Jitsu is that many practitioners drop out after achieving a blue belt. GM Taejoon Lee Reflections of the Pandemic & New “Live by the Sword” Podcast In the beginning of the new decade the World received a wakeup call, a reality check in the form of an unseen enemy that would alter the course of history and our lives will never be the same. During the last two years of the so-called pandemic of the Coronavirus, it revealed many aspects of our true human nature as individuals as well as the collective, of governments and our leaders, of mass media and conglomerates, of the super wealthy and the powermongers. There have been many negative consequences as well as troubling social, economic, and political ramifications as a result of the pandemic, which I am not going to get into here. However, I want to share with you some important values, which we as humanity have realized globally because of this unfortunate circumstance.

GM Taejoon Lee he lockdowns were self-induced house arrest, being forced to stay home from work and school, not being able to get out of the house and socialize as prisoners in our own homes. It limited the distractions and disrupted our daily habitual behavior as automatons. Although many of our social liberties were taken away, it forced us to reexamine what is important in our lives. It made us spend more time with our families, take time to reflect and examine our lives and our goals. It made us question why we go to work in the first place. The daily activities, the mundane interactions, and ordinary relationships that we all took for granted were now all taken away and had to be readdressed. We were faced with change, sudden erratic change that no one was prepared for. And, not only that, but we were also faced with the uncertainty of our future with glimpses of the apocalypse. Fear engulfed our lives and it manifested itself in very dark ugly ways. It ruined and destroyed many lives, not only the lives that were taken directly by the virus, but more so by the indirect consequences of fear, panic, isolation, and the confronting of our repressed demons. Many lost their battles, leaving them devoid of hope, they turned to self-destruction and lashing out toward others with violence and nihilism. There is really no one to blame, except for our own human nature. Covid19 was not the problem, but the dark side of our human selves. Covid was just the spark that ignited the fuel of indignity, malice, destruction, selfishness, cowardice, and hatred, burning away the fortification of reason, compassion, selflessness, and courage. It also unleashed all the vulturous stalkers who prey on the weak, feasting on the dead, callous to misery, and fattened the profiteers of suffering and misfortune. However, amidst the flames of despair and chaos, those who were not turned to ashes rose with enlightened wisdom. They learned the value of

relationships, of family, and that life was short. Life is long and arduous without loved ones and without purpose, but with others whom you love and love in return, life is too short and even a second cannot be wasted. This realization made millions of people quit their jobs, reevaluate their goals, start their own businesses from home, be content with less, minimized frivolous activities and invest more into their relationships. Additionally, this crisis has tested our human spirit and created heroes out of ordinary men and women. As intellectuals, politicians, and billionaires hide in their ivory towers, the men and women on the frontlines as firstresponders have risked and sacrificed their lives so that others may live. Their endeavors are pure as they are not motivated by money, fame, or popularity as politicians, CEOs, and

Credit belongs to these men and women who have acted without selfish motives as well as the good Samaritans, the good neighbors who did not close their doors, point fingers to blame, turned on their neighbors, and shunned or rebuked others. It was as though God gave us a slap in the face to wake up from our hysteria of greed, vanity, and narcissism, falling ever deeply into a dystopian nightmare. Of course, this is just a mild slap and only those who are ready to be awakened will see and hear the message. For many, this pandemic will only accentuate all that was self-serving, delusions of grandeur, hoarding of power and money, ramping up their vein quest for immortality. This pandemic has been the definer and the accentuator to reveal the core of our individual pursuits as well as the

ones in power, of institutions, governments, nations, and globalist powermongers. It is evident that we are living in an era where the liberty and well-being of the individual is no longer held in high regard, but instead for whatever best serves the globalist agenda. Our Hwa Rang Do® community throughout the world has also been impacted and have faced enormous challenges since the pandemic. I am proud to see that our students, instructors, and masters have remained resolute, unshaken, and united in solidarity during these critical times. I want to remind you all that we are dedicated to enhancing, bettering, maximizing, and empowering the individual so that we may be of greater service to others, strengthening our bonds of family and friendships. We must not create division, but exercise compassion and understanding while remaining firm in our convictions to our beliefs, to our creed, always honoring God. Never succumb to the fear of death, as we will all die, and no one can control how we die but only God; worry about how you live and focus on living well. If you have lived right and live in the Truth, then there’s nothing to be afraid. GM Taejoon Lee “Live by the Sword” A Podcast by Hwa Rang Do® Grandmaster Taejoon Lee I have been asked by many students to publicly share my teachings through a podcast or in a book format. And so, I have finally decided to launch an official podcast which started in October 2021. When I first made the commitment to do this, I immediately thought of my old student, Fernando Ceballos. He is one of my most loyal students, whom we have formed much history together in our over 20-year relationship. He is currently the Chief Marketing Officer of Elite Marketing Pro / Attraction Marketing and the co-founder and host of the annual “No Excuses Summit” held each year in Las Vegas, which made him the perfect candidate to host and MC the podcast. Not only that, but he is also a critical thinker and we have enjoyed many “good conversations” in the past. The next step was to come up with the name for the podcast, which would prove to be more challenging than anticipated. It took quite some time to come up with the appropriate name, which was not already taken, but it also had to define the meaning and purpose for the podcast. Krav Maga A group made up of everything... The mixed group is there, made up of 24 people belonging to security companies, to different Ministries such as that of Defense and the Interior. A first sorting had been previously carried out in order to obtain a homogeneous group at the level of similar knowledge. Here they are lined up in the training room, where the individual equipment awaits them. Various protections for elbows, knees, head, chest, groin, but also thigh holster and a dummy handgun.

Introduction by the internship supervisor… The tone is set. From this moment and for the next two hours, no candidate has the right to dialogue with the Instructor. It is he who gives the directives and the candidates execute ... or not. If not, the training stops dead for the person concerned. In order to increase the pressure, no details on the content will be revealed, only the "Safety First" aspect will be explicitly detailed. Before launching the hostilities, the instructor gives the order to all the participants to move outside the room, drink, towel, energy bar, smartphone... in short, to part with their little personal comfort. Some are beginning to understand that with all the protection and the helmet, it will be very fast, very hot and very dry!!! Last reminder: Whoever leaves the room does not enter it anymore! The Instructor will not be caring, understanding and paternal as usual… Attacks on the participants' morality have begun!! Their pockets are checked in order to avoid accidents with sharp objects (key rings, car keys, etc.). There is always a doctor nearby. Emergency procedures are well known by the organizers…

An unusual training session... It’s the right time! They are all placed by two face to face, ready to fight. The order for the first exercise falls: non-stop combat without downtime*! GO!! Some fighters are ruthlessly thrown to the ground by the Instructor... (The Instructor can be a friend or an enemy). They don’t look around themselves enough, lack of control of the environment. Some already stand out for their ability to manage the tension that sets in, others fight with their badly prepared and badly placed equipment, and others are looking on all fours for their handgun that has fallen to the ground! The first three minutes spare no one. Panic seizes some who rip off their helmets in order to get some oxygen!! Mistake not to be made: “Helmet on your head or you leave the room!" - commands the Instructor. The students follow the order; no one will come out… this time. *No timeout: combat where you have no chance for analyzing the aggressor or having a break in the midst of the quick exchange of blows.

Threat… When to draw your weapon? 15 seconds to make a quick inventory of your personal equipment while the instructions for the next exercise rain down. Now we will have to move in sprint, stabilize and then neutralize… an identified terrorist. Pulling out your weapon in the middle of the crowd is not easy. The Instructor, in a fluent and unadorned demonstration, attempts to guide the new aspirants. The demonstration may be shocking to some, a reminder of the dangerousness of the threat immediately puts the church back in the middle of the village. Here they are already sprinting indoor lengths. For some, the 15 seconds were not enough to fix their equipment as well as possible! Rhythm doesn’t change, it’s very high.

He changes his mind, a narcissistic little laugh, he takes his bottle and offers himself a few thirst-quenching sips. He is not there to be loved, he is there to train, train and train again!

Hostage-taking in a confined environment Enough running! It's time to learn an intervention technique on a terrorist with a hostage. Dripping inside the helmet, the heart strongly throbbing, now it's necessary to concentrate to memorize the work to be carried out in order to solve a most delicate situation. They have to change opponents regularly; they no longer know who's who behind their helmets... it doesn't matter anymore! Everyone's goal: getting out of the room in one piece after two hours! The exercise is in full swing, a series of explosions ring out, fighters stop in their tracks, analyze, and one of them shouts: "Threat! Threat!" Indeed, a mad shooter sweeps the room from left to right and from right to left (fictitious shots). Fighters must neutralize him as soon as possible. They manage to do it… some still wonder what happened. The pace is unbearable.

Change of scenery 10 seconds to take a seat on the bus! Two rows of chairs lined up at regular intervals, or so it seems...! Allocation of numbers for each of them, obligation to put both hands on the shoulders of the person in front of them. Last orders from their torturer to ensure everyone’s safety. Final exercise, they do not know (participants have no clue of time; watches, both wristband and wall, were removed before the beginning of hostilities). Numbers are chained and so are the scripts. There's for everyone, no one will escape.

Delivery Time's over!!! The order everyone longed to hear... it's over, the two hours are up! The reactions are diverse. Some rush to take off their helmets and breastplates, others look at their watches in distrust, they have the impression of having been cheated for those two hours were really endless! They're all thirsty, everyone gathers in the center of the torture room for the debriefing. No one's missing. The Instructor congratulates the applicants the way it should and tells them: "You have passed the entrance selection, now you are ready to go on a complete training!"

Conclusion Training in extreme conditions, fatigue, non-existent comfort, equipment supposed to help which quickly becomes a handicap, unknowns, lack of benchmarks, no notion of real time, disorientation, large amount of information to be processed in impossible deadlines, theories to follow in a state of drowsiness, stress management… An explosive but wellthought-out cocktail that allows both parties (students and instructors) to obtain concrete answers on a professional commitment in the security environment. The very idea of mythology has diverse readings itself. From those who consider it little more than a collection of tales, legends and folklore, to those who link it to the foundations of a religion. Carl J. Jung was able to find in them a middle way, as an emerging expression of hidden knowledge inscribed in the collective unconscious of a culture, and therefore of humanity as a whole. But we would fall into a mistake should we read the mythology of the Shizen people through a vision limited by only these three approaches. Shizen mythology, no matter how much it uses storied tales to transmit information about the ordering of the Universe, has an absolutely practical substratum, which was used by its priests and priestesses in certain processes of alteration of energy and tension fields, and through them, of influence in what we know as reality.

hese practices were also not distinctive to the Shizen. Many ancient peoples such as the Celts, Egyptians, African cultures, etc., had similar practices in their cultures. Qualifying them as "magic" would be in a way to denigrate their true nature and essence. Nowadays, quantum physics allows us to approach them with another look, a view capable of giving meaning and explanation to what the ignorant and the arrogant simply prefer to deny, that is, the mysterious access to that network through which, the interlocking of the Universe mysteriously exists and expresses itself. There are, however, unique quirks in the way the Shizen approached their readings of the occult; and I am not referring to the logical cultural particularities resulting from their idiosyncrasies, with which they expressed themselves in their mythologies, but rather in an exceptional characteristic of their own they used when reading the meaning of their divinities as their phases, both in energy and in tension, a point in which we will return to influence throughout the text of this book.

Like all sacred wisdom of antiquity, these stories had functional keys that the disciple could only learn and receive directly from a Master, framed in a set of knowledge, that in their language (Shizengo) was known as “E-bunto”, literally “the great energy” or “the energy that is common to all”. Shizen culture, like other ancient cultures, was so fond of secrecy that they did not leave written texts, although they had three different forms of writing, depending on the period. The entire immense repository of information passed from hand to hand, through a select few, and thus, in an absolutely incredible and unexpected way, has managed to reach our days. But I strongly suspect that the advent of modernity and the imposition of the unique thought, characteristic of globalization in our day, could nevertheless be capable of ending a culture as rich and vast as few, unless we are able to preserve and contextualize it in this new paradigm Its functionality, as the protector of its genetic heirs, is dissolving, since every day more and more, the new generations adhere to new values and reduce to almost folkloristic cults, a sublime Universe of wisdom.

With the disappearance of its greatest exponents, authentic treasures, each of them true guarantors of its conservation, an entire library of wisdom and experience has gone, leaving its knowledge in the hands of very few. The organization chart of knowledge within E-bunto is arranged as a set of Russian dolls, which in the first place distinguishes the “Saoto” (literally “stranger”, the term used for the “uninitiated”), from the “Saota” (that is, the initiate). The initiates, over the years, must traverse the kingdom of all Tengu, until they reach that of Do no Tengu, at which time they receive the degree as “Joho” (“Shidoshi”, in Japanese). This transit, although it was common to all the initiates, did not imply, however, their complete incorporation to the occult knowledge. Most Shizen participated in the culture, traditions, customs and festivities, but only an elite of hierophants, known as “Miryoku”, in the case of men, and “Minikui”, in the case of women, had access to the knowledge and secrets of the E-bunto. Among the Miryoku and the Minikui, only a small group made up an elite known as "walking dragonflies" or "Kotoma Tonbo". Dragonflies, in the sense that they were born and died every day, generally itinerant, not settling permanently in one place. Considered untouchable, their knowledge was the last line of defense for the Shizen culture and people. There were also among them two more initiation ceremonies, held every two years after their initiation as Tonbo, ceremonies of presentation to a certain type of forces. A parallel line in turn distinguished the “Terazo” from the “Kurai”, the latter being known as "the black angels", protectors of the group and whose formulations and knowledge were also a world apart within the Shizen.

Although the primary demons that haunt him are gluttony and ignorance, he symbolizes enlightenment, understanding. Below: Shojobu Tengu, the lord of the waters of the earth, the great emperor, owner of gold in the material world, and of its counterpart, consciousness and wisdom, in the spiritual world. Shojobu pursued wealth, but it was Tateru who gave him the gold that he had found underground, because for him it was worthless (it couldn't be eaten!). The negative side of Shojobu are the seas, because salt water is infertile.

Karassu Tengu is the most human of them all. Son of Dai Koran (the dark one) and Aku, the waning moon. Half-crow half-man, Karassu Tengu acquired that form from the hands of Sussunda Tengu, who punished him that way after defeating him and, in deference to his mentor, Dai Koran, he did not kill him, but consecrated him as lord of the underworld and messenger between the spiritual world and the material world. Karassu got into a fight with all the Tengu. He likes women, and is the image of the warrior, the fighter.

Origins of Tengu The word Tengu, translated from Japanese as "dogs of God", has a very different meaning for the Shizen people than that attributed by Japanese culture. This is probably due to Shizen's own secrecy, that even when their original villages wer e destr oyed and alr eady mixed with the Japanese, they continued to keep their knowledge and traditions secret. However, cultural contamination is always impossible to avoid, and so, in this dynamic of coexistence, both sides greatly influenced each other. The original term in the “Hagumo” language was RANGU and all of them were called “Azarenbun”. Shintoism gave Tengu a different meaning from that of E-bunto,

taking one of them, Karassu Tengu, half crow, half man (Karassu means "crow" in Japanese) and its most elemental iconography, as a reference to finish for reducing all other Tengu in general, under this confused image. The crow's beak becomes a long nose in some representations, but it maintains the red color of the face as a reference (along with black, one of the colors typical of this Tengu, according to the Shizen tradition). Some scholars maintain that it was the apparitions of spirits of dead Jesuits in Japan (big noses are a characteristic with which the Japanese identify all Wester ners), which could contribute to these confusions. There are also quotes here and there from another Tengu - in this case, Shojobu Tengu -, as “Okane Tengu” in Japanese, that is, the “Money Tengu” (“kane, o-kane”: money, in Japanese). It was inevitable that the fame of some Miryoku and Minikui would transcend the realm of the Shizen families and there were not a few who served the Japanese aristocracy, and even the Shogun himself.

Sussunda made him sick when he wanted to usurp his kingdom and then healed him, but his skin was forever scarred. He, who was a beautiful young man, hid his face from then on under a hood. He is feared because the worst plagues can come out of his mouth.

In spite of this, accustomed to keeping their secrets, little was left of the Tengu and their cult, but obviously there was an influence on Japanese culture from such coexistence. When one understands all the richness of the Shizen culture with regard to Tengu, it is easy to conclude on which side lies the true origin of everything related to Tengu and where, on the contrary, contamination took place. For the Shizen, Tengu speaks in itself of a series of divinities, which are nothing but fractals of the totality of what there exists. In this sense, they are “celestial dogs” or “god dogs”, insofar as they are just as faithful as a canine to their own unique principle, called Kamissama in Japanese, Kamonon in Shizengo. There are obvious similarities with the word “Tengri”, of Mongolian origin, which has survived in Turkish and has a concomitance in Chinese with a divinity called “Tiāngǒu”. We are not certain about the origins of the term, but we can infer a relationship between the older Mongol culture and shamanism, and that of the Shizen. Not surprisingly, the first prehistoric populations that arrived at the islands of Japan proceeded from the Asiatic continent. These earliest inhabitants are at the base of the genetic origins of the Shizen, although their culture as such arose after the invasion of the Yamato, a different ethnic group from Southeast Asia who, in their advent, forced the creation of a group of refugees from the invasion, on the island of Hokkaido. The most famous of these ethnic groups originating from Japan is the Aino ethnic group, which even today has the recognition of the Japanese government as a minority, after a sad history of genocidal persecutions that are similar to those of the American Indians. Like the Aino, other refugee tribal cultures of Caucasian origin in Hokkaido, joined knowledge and forces in that conglomerate that we know today as the Shizen culture, and they did so around four mythical villages, Kawa, Tayo, Yabu and Yama. After a period of resistance, the villages were decimated and only a few families survived mixed with the Yamato invaders. In fact, the name "Shizen" is a Japanese term which means "natural", so "Shizen" was not the term with which they referred to themselves. These peoples were formerly known as HAGUMO (an old term that related to their way of life, living in holes underground, like spiders.) According to a colleague from Takeo Nagaki's time, they were later called RONGU. The Japanese often referred to them as SHIZEN JIN, SHIZEN MONO, SHIZENBITO, or SHIZEN SHA. In Shizengo, SHIZEN SAO (Shizen people). Although there were differences in the language of each of the villages and they had their particularities, they all practiced the same Tengu cult, although each one of them developed their peculiarities. Our spiritual lineage, as initiates in the Tengu cult, comes from Kawa; in Shizengo, Kawa village is said “Kawazuki Togo”, although Shiniyuki Sensei, the Miryoku who trained my Master, Joho Jordan Augusto, Yamori, came from Yabu, which has allowed us to have a broader knowledge of their sacred traditions.

The Nine Tengu There are nine fractals known as Rangu or Tengu that the Shizen tradition describes. The names present here change when it comes to the nomenclature of the Kotoma Tonbo, and according to the times, up to six names are described for each fractal, terms that remain secret, even today, for everyone else. The nine Tengu are: Sussunda Tengu Sensō Tengu Kaze no Tengu Biōki no Tengu Aino Tengu Shōjobu Tengu Karassu Tengu Tateru Tengu Dono Tengu

Each one of them corresponds to a type of element, so we have: Corresponding to Fire Element: Sussunda Tengu Sensō Tengu Corresponding to Water Element: Kaze no Tengu Shōjobu Tengu Corresponding to Air Element: Biōki no Tengu Aino Tengu Corresponding to Earth Element: Tateru Tengu Dono Tengu Corresponding to Wood Element: Karassu Tengu In addition, to the Metal Element corresponds Unmei, the destiny, sometimes called “Unmei no Tengu”, although it’s not really one of the fractals of the totality as described above, but the result of the conjunction of many of them.

The idea of the elements, common to many ancient cultures, allowed us to contextualize the essential nature of forces. The Fire energy, HI (KA), was violent, fast, it consumed everything, destroyed, accelerated and heated, ascended, illuminated. Water energy, SUIME (SUI), represented fluidity, the immensity of the seas, the growth of crops, abundance, etc. The Air energy, KUUKI, also IHA, spoke of the winds, changes and directions, while the Earth energy, TSUCHI (CHI), spoke of the end of things, what is solid, tangible, etc. Wood energy, BUKI (from BU, forest), corresponded to the energy of the personal, what is human (polarity man - tree) and the Metal element, GINRE, (GI) made it of destiny, of that which was unbreakable and rigid. The Wood Element, BUKI (of BU, forest), corresponded to the energy of the personal, of what it was human (polarity man - tree) and the energy of the Metal Element, GINRE (GI), corresponded to the destiny, to what was unbreakable and rigid. Over the centuries, each one of the Tengu, even though it was essentially linked to one of these forces, was differentiated into phases according to elements, qualifying and cataloging the phases in the nature of each one of them. These phases received their own names, according to their element phase and whether their nature was positive or negative. This happened when the Shizen were already mixed with the Japanese, thence some nomenclatures included Nihongo terms (Japanese words).

Attributes are the inner qualities that shape technique ... that provide the ground from which technique springs. The victor in a fight is the fighter who possesses superior attributes. These include the qualities of killer instinct, sensitivity, timing, reflex, power, line familiarization, sense of purpose, and yes, technical skill. Consider sports. There are always individuals who dominate their game. They do so not because they know the techniques of the game, but because they possess superior attributes. For instance, millions can play basketball; countless thousands can dribble, pass and shoot with great skill. But how many of those countless thousands possess the attributes that elevate a player like Larry Bird to the realm of basketball legend. In

A jab that does not possess those qualities those attributes - is merely a jab, not a Jeet Kune Do technique.”

football, how many players possess the attributes of an Eric Dickerson or a Walter Payton? As it is in sport, so it is in martial arts. It is not technique, but the refinement of attributes that accounts for the superior fighter. As I have said before, attributes are the primary focus of Jeet Kune Do training. Those who try to label or classify JKD through cataloging its technical repertoire are misguided. (Remember ... it doesn't exist.) Jeet Kune Do is not about techniques or movements in and of themselves. JKD is concerned with the manner in which techniques and movements are performed. What is a Jeet Kune Do technique? It is the jab that is felt before it is seen; it is the jab that causes terrible damage; it is the jab thrown at the perfect moment in a fight; it is the jab that is not telegraphed to the opponent. A jab that does not possess those qualities -those attributes - is merely a jab, not a Jeet Kune Do technique. JKD is an iceberg. The tip is technique, while lurking below the surface is the great mass of the berg, which is composed of attributes. And as an experienced I seaman well knows; it is the hidden mass of an iceberg that constitutes the greatest danger. To give one example of the nature of JKD training as it relates to developing attributes, let's consider the Kali stick. Introduced as a training device by Dan lnosanto, the Kali stick is from the Filipino martial arts, which have been woven into the framework of JKD. Consider the single stick, and how it develops a key attribute - that of reflex. Wielded by a trained man, the single stick has been clocked traveling at speeds of up to 150 m.p.h. By way of reference, Goose Gossage's fastball travels at a relatively slow 85 m.p.h. The experience of full-contact sparring with the stick (and lots of protective equipment) over an extended period of time forces your neurological centers to operate at a much higher level. In short, your reflexes get a helluva lot faster. This becomes apparent when one makes the transition to empty hand sparring. The fastest punch moves in slow motion. This is like the sensation of slowness that you experience when driving 55 m. p. h. after driving at consistently higher speeds...such as 85! Fifty-five may be fast, but the previous experience of 95 m.p.h. makes it seem very slow.

Another important attribute in JKD is sensitivity. Sensitivity allows one to quickly and accurately feel, not see, what the opponent is doing in order to react in the most efficient manner. Again, to practice this attribute JKD uses knife sparring, to increase the speed and sensitivity. When you spar with wooden knives, they are treated as real, and any contact with the body is considered critical, if not sufficient to end the engagement. This being so, the degree of sensitivity called for in such close-quarters sparring is particularly high. There is no margin for error. When one then returns to empty-hand fighting, where solid hits and not mere touches matter, the student discovers that his sensitivity has quadrupled. As these examples indicate, attributes in Jeet Kune Do are far more important than techniques, which explains why it is hard to define JKD to someone used to distinguishing arts by their techniques. The difficulty in getting this point across is compounded by the tremendous variety of techniques in JKD. I1deed, all of the techniques of Jeet Kune Do ever published comprise only two percent of the techniques actually used. In order to understand and internalize JKD principles, it is necessary to have a different mentality - you are Jeet Kune Do!

For 4 decades, Patrick Levet has been involved in the propagation of Vietnamese martial culture. It is now time to move on to a more precise and detailed description of this form of combat, but also of its various forms of evolution which are the Vật de Vovinam Việt Võ Đạo and the Vật de Vovinam Integral. With this new DVD, Vietnamese Vat is presented in a completely new way. Instead of simply filming the techniques of the official program, fixed and without real application, Vat is shown in its traditional form detailing its main aspects (dress, refereeing, ritual, techniques, counter-attacks, tactics), its technical evolutions, as well as its differences, demonstrating why such evolutions occurred. This discipline is completely unknown to the general Western public despite being thousands of years old. The art of Vật is composed of hundreds of techniques and variations. However, the Vật techniques in Vovinam Việt Võ Đạo do not represent the proportion they deserve, only 28 techniques, despite the fact that the Founding Master was a Vật fighter. At Vovinam Integral we have tried to remedy this by adding many traditional Vật techniques, with over a hundred attack techniques (takedowns and projections) making up the overall program. To that we must add all the counter attacks for each takedown and projection technique as well as the defenses once on the ground. All this is complemented by all the techniques of compression, arm and leg locks, strangulation and choking, immobilization and controls, many of which are drawn from Jiu-jitsu, as is already the case in Vovinam Việt Võ Đạo.

Jukoshin Ryu. An effective self-defense system. The Jukoshin Ryu style of Jiu Jitsu was designed to be a powerful and definitive tool in hand-to-hand combat. Its precise movements, fast, direct and convincing, are focused on doing away with all the options of our opponent allowing us to fluidly face all kinds of attacks and defending ourselves from one or more adversaries, which makes it one of the most efficient self-defense systems currently existing. Al Dacascos Wun Hop Kuen Do – Kajukenbo He is a very important part of the history of modern Martial Arts and of the revolution of syncretic styles towards efficiency. His name is known by experts and true fans from all over the planet, but also by laymen in the field, since his son Marc Dacascos is one of the most prominent action movie stars of recent decades. Discovering the heart and soul of Kajukenbo and understanding the reasons why and how it became what it is today requires that we see it through the web of facts and myths, so we can assimilate the transformation and evolution of the system, as well as its styles, methods and expressions. It would be necessary having the mentality of the founder of the Original Kajukenbo system, from the Kenpo-Karate style, his methods and personal expressions, as well as knowing the misinterpretations that have been made of his true character and how some of his disciples, some well-intentioned and others for their own inter est, have derived the essences of Kajukenbo pursuing to achieve their own power and benefit.

Great Masters his is sadly true, and it does not only happen in the Kajukenbo system, but in many other Martial Arts styles. If we use religion as an example, devotees tend to think that their path is the only way to get to heaven, when we know that all roads lead to Rome. When we speak of History, we refer to plural History and not to personal history. Unfortunately, we have to rely on the integrity and accuracy of the historian. The four pillars of Kajukenbo are Kenpo-Karate (or Kempo, AKA "the original style"), Tum-pai, Ch'uan Fa and Wun Hop Kuen Do. Kajukenbo has often been called as KenpoKarate, which is a wrong denomination. But let's go back to the time when in Hawaii, in the late 1940s and early 1950s, the Emperado brothers, together with other young people, developed an effective method of fighting based on self-defense with common sense. In those days, fights and stabbings were common on the streets of Honolulu, not only among the local population, but also among the local people and the American seamen stationed there. It's unknown when and how the name "Black Belt Society" became known as Ka-Ju-Ken-Bo. For a long time, it was assumed that the name was devised by Kenneth Funakoshi, a fourth cousin to Gichin Funakoshi, creator and founder of Shoto Kan Karate. Kenneth Funakoshi, who was born in Honolulu on September 4, 1938, was a blue belt in Emperado's Kenpo-Karate class at the Honolulu's "Palama Settlement Dojo". However, the credit’s gone to Frank Ordoñez, who at the time was in charge of compiling research and writing articles on the Kajukenbo. This indicates how easy it's been to change history and say that the "SYSTEM" is Kajukenbo. The STYLES are Kenpo-Karate, Tum-Pai, Ch'uan-fa and Wun Hop Kuen Do.

Great Masters These styles are no doubt the pillars of the foundation of KAJUKENBO, but the system has also used other arts as help of each one of the pillars, namely, the Mixed Martial Arts (better known as MMA), the Sambo fighting system, the modern methods of Military Combat, and the practice of medical and curative arts. An interesting point is that while many consider the Kajukenbo to be the original foundation of MMA (Mixed Martial Arts), I would suggest that the Kajukenbo MMA acronym has more to do with what the art really stands for, that is, with the true "Meaning of Martial Arts" (MMA), because of its attitude and application of the fighting techniques to win and survive. METHODS are the teaching styles, or the way Masters teach: The Emperado method, the Reyes method, the Gaylord method, the Dacascos method, the Ramos method, the Rebelo method, the Wulf method, the Bettencourt method or the Dan Baker method. EXPRESSIONS are the accents of the method. This can be confusing, but it really isn't. The explanation is only the concrete way of the individual to understand the SYSTEM, the STYLE, the METHOD, from there comes the free own EXPRESSION, from the heart and soul of the Art. For example, in Europe we can see uniforms that read Kajukenbo System, Kenpo-Karate style, Emperado method, but the expression of that method is that of the Master who is teaching it.

And if it happens to be yours, then that's your method expression. We have seen many who claim to teach a complete method, but if you look closely, this is the expression or interpretation of the method by the Master you are seeing. Another example: The Kajukenbo system, Wun Hop Kuen Do style, Dacascos method, expressed by Bruno Rebelo. The four pillars above give an idea of what Kajukenbo is, how it really is, and it's not based on a single pillar as many think, especially in Spain, where the word Sijo (creator) is misused. As a side note, let me clarify that there is only one Sijo, and in reality, Sijo means "the creator", the divine, God. Using "Sijo" as a single word, implies the idea of divinity. When we use the word Sijo we must do it in a phrase like “the Sijo of Kajukenbo”, “the Sijo of Kenpo”, which would mean the creator of Kajukenbo or the creator of Kenpo. If, on the other hand, we are referring to the creator of the Art, the correct word should be Jo-tze (Jo-Si); so, said in this way, the word could stand alone. The first pillar, the original Kajukenbo, Kenpo-Karate style, is a system made up of various Martial Arts, and it's said to have been formed between the years 1947-1949, by five men in their 20s: Mr. P.Y.Y. Choo, Karate practitioner, who is the first (KA); Mr. Frank Ordoñez, practitioner of Ju-Jitsu; while Mr. J. Holck contributed Judo (JU-JU-Jitsu). Mr. Adriano D. Emperado supplied the KEN of the Kenpo (KEN) he practiced, as well as other Filipino fighting arts. And finally

Mr. George Chuen Yoke Chang, who contributed some aspects of the art of Boxing (BO), including both Western Boxing and Chinese Boxing, better known as Kung Fu or Gung-fu. In those times, none of them were really Grandmasters, masters or teachers, not even instructors! They were simply enthusiastic practitioners of the Martial Art that everyone had chosen. Today, after years of practice, achievements and followers, all the original founders have earned the title of Grand master. At the time of writing this article, in addition to the five founders, two Grand Masters remain alive: Grand Master Joseph Holck, in Arizona, and Grand Master Frank

Great Masters Ordoñez, in Hawaii. In the Kajukenbo-Kenpo-Karate style, many of the old practitioners who, being conservative, feel comfortable safeguarding what they were taught, have formed the basis of what is known as Original Kajukenbo. Many of the old moves, tricks and techniques that were taught in the early stages of Kajukenbo, still exist today with little change. Many people claim to be teaching the original Kajukenbo system, the Kenpo-Karate style, the Emperado method... but actually it's their own expression or interpretation. The first pillar and all the terminology used, came from the Japanese language, due to the influence of people such as James T. Mitose, who was in charge of bringing Kenpo to Hawaii and who was the Master of famous Professor Chow and Professor Emperado, just like other Japanese instructors who taught Judo and Karate in those days. The early 1960s also saw the biggest changes in Kajukenbo history. In those days it also took place the legal registration of the Kajukenbo Self Defense Institute of Hawaii Inc. Robert “Twinkle” Kawakami became Chairman of the Kajukenbo, from which Adriano D. Emperado had been its founder and was its visible head. In addition, the white of the traditional Karate outfit was changed to the black Kenpo uniform. The students wore red t-shirts under the black uniforms, while the instructors wore them black. The second pillar, the Tum-Pai style Kajukembo, came from the head instructor Adriano D. Emperado, who was frustrated with the direction that the original Kajukenbo Kenpo-Karate was taking. With many of his best instructors emigrating from Hawaii with him to the US, with the loss of control and other conflicts that followed, Emperado changed the pronunciation of Kajukenbo to Kajukembo and included Al Dela Cruz and myself, Al Dacascos, to the head of what he would call Tum-Pai Gung Fu, in 1962-63. Dela Cruz gave up being head instructor of the Kenkabo Association of the Kajukenbo system, to learn

more advanced subjects - which I myself would later do. This would allow him to have the capacity and ability to become one of the four founders of the Original Kajukenbo. We had no idea what direction Emperado was taking us in, but we were eager to learn. Due to his relationship with the Chinese community and with many Chinese Gung fu instructors, Emperado had started to implement his South Chinese fighting concepts, principles and forms. Specially the Sil-lum of the South, the Hang-ga, the Choy-li-fat, the Tai Chi style, the Hsing Yi and the Chi-Kung. On the other hand, I was a student of Sifu Buck Sam Kong of the Sil-lum Pai system of Gung-fu for a short period of time, therefore I was the last man of the newly created Tum-Pai section or pillar of the Kajukembo. The order was Emperado, Dela Cruz and then I, Dacascos, and it remained that way until I had to emigrate to the U.S.A., in February 1965. I settled in Northern California, just as other Kajukenbo practitioners did before me. The Tum-Pai name would be withdrawn from Kajukenbo in 1966 and it would officially return as Northern Kajukenbo Tum-pai in April 1984, when Sifu Jon Loren, of Kelso, Washington, presented the new version of Tum-pai to Professor Adriano Emperado in Oregon, and requested the Tum-pai to be recognized as the fourth pillar. The third pillar of Kajukenbo became known as Kajukenbo Ch'uan Fa, and I myself was the founder of that section, along with Adriano Emperado and Al Dela Cruz. This section became the most influential, as the emblem became the international symbol of Kajukenbo. The Chinese letters Ch'uan Fa Gung fu essentially mean Chinese Kempo-Gung fu. These names affect all Kajukenbo practitioners in the world to the extent that they identify the pillar to which they belong. The evolution occurred when I was introduced to the San José Chinese Cultural Center, where Sifu Paul Ng was teaching the Fu-Huk system of Kung, as well as the North style of Shaolin Kung fu. Sifu Ng was also a student of Professor Wong Jack Man, the man who fought Bruce Lee in a famous battle between these two styles. The North Kung Fu style influenced my personal growth and development, so I could never again say that the Tum-pai was called Tum-Pai. After two years of intense training in this style of Kung fu, I began to introduce and put into practice these forms, so I thought that it could not be called Tum-Pai anymore. The three of us, Emperado, Dela Cruz and I decided to avoid the using the name Tum-pai and change it to Ch'uan Fa, which was a more generic name for Chinese Kempo, so we started using Chinese terms instead of the Japanese vocabulary previously used. The American Kajukenbo Association adopted the emblem in 1967 and two years later, the International Kajukenbo Association decided to use that emblem as well. The fourth pillar of Kajukenbo is Wun Hop Kuen Do and was officially recognized in 1969.

Great Masters The name Wun Hop Kuen Do or WHKD achieved an identity of its own. I became the sole founder of this section, as my innovation and rediscovery of the concepts and principles of the past became a great influence, through what I was expressing in the Martial Arts community. The great influence of the 25 unique technical principles of fighting adopted from Joe Lewis, along with the concepts and interpretations, would take me even further... Incorporating more eclectic fighting systems into the System, as well as concepts from Filipino Martial Arts, which included fighting with knifes, turned out to be a style that prides itself on being fit for real-life combat. The main feature of the WHKD is its flow and its unique instruments to enhance such Chi flowing. The WHKD is

commonly known as "the system without a system." The Art seeks to adapt to any situation and incorporate new techniques, so that practitioners can perform them. With this structure, the style maintains its traditional Kung Fu roots, teaching "ways to conserve, rather than destroy", and it seeks to instill respect for human beings, as well as a sense of tranquility, which must be present in every martial artist. In addition, the philosophy of being able to be "variable" also applies to defense techniques, since there is no predetermined response for each situation and one must adapt to the situation whenever it arises. This idea prevails in self-defense, since it's creative, and it permits everyone to think about what the best response is. There are many exercises that can allow you developing

this fluidity and creativity, thus achieving the ability to respond reflexively to each situation. The "Dacascos' Wun Hop Kuen Do" method has produced many champions and celebrities in the world of Kajukenbo, one of them is Mark Dacascos, actor and martial artist who has acted in movies such as “Brotherhood of the Wolf”, “Crying Freeman”, “Only the strong” and many other films and television shows, including his role as president in “Iron Chef America”. Other champions such as Malia Bernal Dacascos, Eric Lee, Karyn Turner, Karen Shepard, Christian Wulf, Emanuel Bettencourt, Winfred Joszko, are just a small example of the great factory of fighters, teachers and students that is Wun Hop Kuen Do. With this structure, the Kajukenbo Ohana Association was created, under which many organizations from all over the world come together. "United but independent"; that is the motto by which many pillars and sub-pillars are known. Kajukenbo is a hybrid Art and its practitioners are encouraged to find their own expressions; that is part of the essence of this adaptable and eclectic art form.
