In this new work filmed in the spectacular landscapes of Fuerteventura, declared Natural Heritage of Humanity, we will see part of the work done by the Federation of Garrote Canario Fighting along with the Cabildo, island government institution, to promote this traditional indigenous activity, the Garrote Canario or Lata Majorera. We will have the opportunity to see in action the Grand Master Jorge Domínguez developing "Torciadas" with the Garrote, learned directly from the old Majorero Masters like Simeón Alberto. In the Corralejo Dunes, Grand Master Carlos Barrera performs several series of Garrote Canario and Mano Canaria (empty hand) techniques, bringing the martial artist closer to the application and parallelism of these traditional techniques. This natural tatami on a fine blond sand, is the most suitable place to perform Zapatas and Trabas. Also presented are several technical series of work with the Tolete Canario, adapted to the field of Police Defense. An excellent sample not only of techniques, but also of the activities carried out by the Federación de Lucha del Garrote Canario in Fuerteventura, the Island of the Majoreros.

It is incredible how in just two centuries the paradigm of humanity has changed so intensely. This transformation process is linked to seeds of communication that took place throughout history in a slow and intermittent way and that have their own names and outstanding events. Let's think that in a time when there was no internet, no telephones, not even telegraph, cultural interactions took place that were able to permeate the blocks of the time. Annie Besant's travels to Tibet, the secret doctrine of Blavatsky, Reverend Leadbeater ... Theosophy and Freemasonry were essential channels for Victorian England, at the apex of its empire, to be the transmission belt in the West, of the seed of the hidden knowledge of the East and thus these spread throughout the world. The most heartless capitalism exists today in China, while even Buddhism's own spiritual guide, the Dalai Lama, travels throughout the West spreading his teachings among the show business stars. These are the times of fusion, sometimes forced, a duck wallow where, as in a flea market or second-hand shop, you can see "the Bible next to a water heater". In this cauldron of all kinds of ingredients, millions of pieces of information are cooked together, finding their means to saturation through that network that acts as

the greatest entropic force of the moment: The Internet. Never before had we had more access to information; what is paradoxical is that never before it had been so difficult to clearly discern how to discriminate between them, namely, those that can help us on our personal path and those that will simply try to fill our brains with junk. Mixes aren't bad; they are the starting point of the new, but when they do not have a well-defined basis, like rootless trees, they are usually swept away by the winds of change. In this Kali Yuga, the new version of the Apocalypse (now due to fire, global warming, etc.), new “redemptory” churches, like environmentalism, confront the old ones of the original sin, with those of "the terminal sin", expanding the guilt of the nature destruction, ¡as if men could do such thing… Nature is everything! And it doesn't give a damn about what men do or don’t do! Dinosaurs were also there! Now it’s time

for these little bugs, that it will follow, as they say in Mexico, “a toda madre”, that is, with heart and soul, at full speed ... (Nature...) If in China, the Cultural Revolution ended what was left of their traditional Martial Arts; in Japan, Capitalism and Westernization did the same with their way of life. The best schools of both cultures are today in the West. For their part, Yoga and Buddhism were sublimated in the West by the hand of their best Masters, while in India goods are produced for half the planet, wrapped in an unlimited industrialization. Korea and Taiwan manufacture all the microchips in the world, while here Taekwondo flourishes as an Olympic sport. The examples are infinite… As that Master of mine used to say, “everything is seen in its opposite”. The times of paradox have arrived. The circle is closed, all the ingredients are already crushed, and the stew is on the table. Will you be able to eat it?

How to learn and grow up in Aikido

By integrating Kokyu-ryoku, (which literally means "the power of the breath"), into our Aikido techniques, we develop and increase awareness of ki and a deeper understanding of the fundamental principle of Budo, namely, ki is what moves the body. As we continue to develop kokyu ryoku training, Aikido techniques evolve from a simple fighting method, to become techniques of a purification process (called misogi in Japanese), when the body, breath, mind and spirit come into harmony.

Following on from the first stage of Nomura shihan's presentation, the development of kokyu ryoku, he now moves on to the next stage, which focuses on nagare and en/ten. Nagare can be translated as 'flow', and en/ten can be translated as 'turning/rotating'. He hopes that he may benefit our practice through presenting these concepts to us. Ki Aikido is budo and therefore has a martial aspect. Through the study of Aikido technique, the martial aspect is developed and transformed into "do" (the way): the path of harmony, the perfect balance between the way of being and the way of living. This is where the role of ki is very important. The ki of the universe, the ki of all nature around us, is ever present and we perceive it everywhere as a conscious physical energy. In Aikido, we also perceive that the same ki of the universe is working within us. Within us there is our consciousness, our awareness, which is a form of energy. This is a vital part of what we refer to when we say ki. But there is also the physical body. My body is made of things I have no knowledge about; even though every cell is part of me, I have no knowledge of every cell's function. Yet I know that every cell contains energy, and so the basis of my physical being can also be called ki. When we talk about ki, we refer on the one hand to the ki that exists in our body, all around us and in the spaces all around us; on the other hand we also refer to ki as our consciousness and awareness as living sentient beings. Ultimately it is our ki of consciousness that moves physical things.

In Japanese we can refer to this consciousness as "shin", which uses the same Chinese character as "god." We think of it as a consciousness that is godly, or a higher energy, and we particularly need to concentrate on the function of shin. We should not focus on where we are physically strong or weak when executing technique, rather we should aim to continuously refine our awareness and consciousness as technique is performed. This kind of consciousness is very important to our practice. Of particular importance is developing the conscious feeling of gratitude. The sense of gratitude that we have for the blessings of nature is the same as the gratitude we should feel to our partner. In both cases, we are receiving ki. We live by breathing in and breathing out, continuously repeating the process of receiving and releasing ki. When performing technique, we inhale the ki of nature, together with our partner's ki into our hara, or center. It then moves throughout our entire body and is released again back into nature as we exhale. In this way, as we practice and become more proficient at Aikido movement, we try not to get caught up in muscular or physical sensations when we make contact with our partner. Instead we refine our awareness of nagare (the flow of ki) that we are creating as technique is performed.

Nagare, or flow Flow exists all around us in nature, and of course it also exists in our body. The blood in our veins flows, and it is this that keeps our body healthy. Within this flow, a kind of consciousness also exists. The movement of energy all around us is circular and continuous. Within that circular flow there is a center, and when the center is firm the flow is stable. Aikido training seeks to cultivate a center in terms of our consciousness or awareness. It is from a strong center that we can be aware of unlimited flow and thus facilitate technique. In Aikido movement, as we become one with and redirect our partner's flow circularly, we replicate and become one with the eternal flow of nature. As our experience and understanding of this develops, the effect on our character and personality can be both profound and life changing. This is why Aikido is a spiritual budo.

En/ten, or turning/rotating The movements in Aikido can be compared to the movement of a spinning top. In order to keep a well balanced rotation, a low center of gravity in which to turn is necessary. The earth is turning, while at the same time being in a large orbit around the sun. It can be said that Aikido's movements are the same. We turn our hips at the same time as we move around our partner. Moving and turning our hips generates a lot of power, especially when the movement is integrated with kokyu ryoku, the power of respiration. The breath itself has no shape but we focus it within the technique to reinforce the movement. This ensures that ki flows freely and is not blocked by physical or mental tension. It is therefore essential that we maintain a soft and relaxed body and mind, using the breath to allow ki to flow unhindered and without obstruction.

Unification As we seek to blend with the movement of our partner, we must look to blend with their ki and their way of thinking. Not only this, but we must do so without compromising our own center. We must move our partner not through personal intention, but from our center's awareness. For the partner, they feel that our lack of resistance results in their attacking power becoming nullified. By moving from a stable center, and blending with our partner, we can practice techniques that have form. We maintain focus on the flow of ki rather than becoming distracted by the form of the technique itself.

Conclusion - General comment Akido was developed in part as a response to the difficult question: How can we create a peaceful society? This is the question that should motivate us to explore the key principles of Aikido in our practice. Our society is technologically advanced, but our spiritual advancement has fallen behind. Due to a universal desire for human spiritual development, Aikido is now recognized in more than 90 countries all over the world. Through continuous regular Aikido practice, we discover and experience the spiritual idea of "love". This is the ultimate objective of budo.

Jeet Kune Do Impressing your students or surpassing yourself? We must never confuse the fact of trying to surpass ourselves through our martial practice, with surpassing our limits just to impress our students. The teacher should always set an example for his students and show them that hard work will allow them to achieve their goals. On the other hand, he should never confuse demonstrating and learning a technique with wanting to impress students with his power or his own technical abilities.

The teacher must give up showing off in front of his students, in order to pass on the techniques to them with the greatest possible neutrality, so that all of them can express themselves without becoming a clone of him. If the teacher tries to impress the students, they will only see the spectacular aspect of the techniques, thus missing the real essence of each movement. Indeed, when techniques are performed at real speed by the master, the student only sees the spectacular aspect and fails to look at every detail.

Jeet Kune Do he student will therefore perform the techniques quickly, and in turn he will attempt to impress the spectators who observe him, without rendering each technique truly effective. Excessive speed only results in hiding the mistakes of those who use it. Moving too quickly gives the illusion of having control of the technical chains, while in reality the movements carried out in this way cannot be coordinated or precise. Much too often, speed will give rise to very bad habits instead of allowing the realization of the techniques learned with accuracy. Don't we tell children not to rush to do their homework because they will forget things and their grades will be reduced? Working slowly and taking their time, they will be able to avoid all the traps set by the teacher in order to see whether the lessons learned have been mastered. The same goes for the police or the army specialized groups; they always move with precaution in order to

avoid any risk for themselves or for the civilians they come to help. Over the centuries, the military have understood that sending out a multitude of soldiers running and shouting will only result in a lot of casualties in their ranks during the attack They've already realized that moving, using tactics learned and repeated slowly thousands of times, will allow them to come out alive more easily than if they had learned these skills by rushing in. In addition, if you work slowly without trying to impress and "sell" your technical "superiority", you will be able to perform these same techniques at very high speed when needed without the risk of falling or endangering yourself. Thus, specialized groups have finally understood: slow and precise work is the only way to progress and avoid dying having taken an ill-considered risk. No group leader or psychologists would ever tolerate having a daredevil in their units. Indeed, someone like that would endanger the whole group, risking the failure of the missions with a very high risk of death for their teammates or the civilians rescued. The precision and repetition of each technique are the only certainties to minimize the dangers they will encounter during their career. If these professionals work slowly and continually pushing past their deficiencies to achieve "perfection," how can we as practitioners dare to claim that training directly with speed in our movements can be effective?

It's not lying and endangering our students to sell them the dream of invincibility because in their unconscious they think they are invincible? Indeed, how many practitioners, who see their teachers performing magical techniques, believe themselves to be safe from all danger because no one will be able to reach them thanks to their "hypersonic" speed? What is dramatic is that those students, and even those teachers who make films in their lessons, will often discover too late their shortcomings and their vulnerabilities. In an assault or in a competition, they find that there is someone faster and more determined than them; so, they receive a multitude of blows without being able to reply.

Jeet Kune Do Why? Simply because, in all of their years of training, they always believed in themselves, they were convinced that their blows were unstoppable, that no attack could reach them, that they were the best, etc. The day their certainties are challenged, they will never be able to adapt to correct their mistakes. Thus, we are witnessing real disasters, sometimes with death during an assault. Training incorrectly results in failure.

It is therefore essential to practice each technique honestly and slowly to be able to assimilate it perfectly before speeding up the movements. You’ll never see a newborn baby start running right after its mother gives birth to it. Babies need to go through many stages of development before they can run smoothly and with ease. Martial Arts are no exception to the rule; practitioners must be patient and humbly practice everything they learn

Jeet Kune Do Mutual aid allows the improvement of each one, like a rope in the mountains. Trying to impress others is nothing more than a sign of weakness and denial of one's own level. Sifu David Delannoy presents his second work, focused on Jeet Kune Do and Self-Defense and built like a puzzle. It highlights and puts into practice some very important points in self-defense, such as the three phases of an aggression, body movement and shifting, opening of the visual field, response to an aggression according to law, physical destruction, vital areas, etc. With respect to the doing away of the physical threat, one of the essential principles of the Philippine martial arts is applied: the overriding of the attacking member and the importance of immediate responding to an aggression immediately when they hit us. Our response to aggression is simply proportional and immediate to the attack. Then, we configure the puzzle by adding elements depending on the development of the situation. Sifu Delannoy explains in detail the vital points and essential areas, the pinching, how to protect against a boxer, displacements and visual field, protections and destructions against simple attacks, reactions to strangulations, grips and headbutting, how to use the attacker’s body as a shield, defenses against stick and knife attacks, the use of everyday objects to defend ourselves. In case of aggression, respect for life, lucidity and survival instinct are necessary parameters that make you make good decisions.

For 4 decades, Patrick Levet has been involved in the propagation of Vietnamese martial culture. It is now time to move on to a more precise and detailed description of this form of combat, but also of its various forms of evolution which are the Vật de Vovinam Việt Võ Đạo and the Vật de Vovinam Integral. With this new DVD, Vietnamese Vat is presented in a completely new way. Instead of simply filming the techniques of the official program, fixed and without real application, Vat is shown in its traditional form detailing its main aspects (dress, refereeing, ritual, techniques, counter-attacks, tactics), its technical evolutions, as well as its differences, demonstrating why such evolutions occurred. This discipline is completely unknown to the general Western public despite being thousands of years old. The art of Vật is composed of hundreds of techniques and variations. However, the Vật techniques in Vovinam Việt Võ Đạo do not represent the proportion they deserve, only 28 techniques, despite the fact that the Founding Master was a Vật fighter. At Vovinam Integral we have tried to remedy this by adding many traditional Vật techniques, with over a hundred attack techniques (takedowns and projections) making up the overall program. To that we must add all the counter attacks for each takedown and projection technique as well as the defenses once on the ground. All this is complemented by all the techniques of compression, arm and leg locks, strangulation and choking, immobilization and controls, many of which are drawn from Jiu-jitsu, as is already the case in Vovinam Việt Võ Đạo.

Before the measures or decisions to be taken, they adopted different specific knowledge where appearances do not mean anything. This natural perception is simple and direct, open and receptive, immediate and spontaneous, without obscuration. The idea of Ugoisen ("not fixed"), means not having expectations, nor compulsions, nor interpretations, nor predetermined plans.

he 20th century saw many changes, the most important of which was the organization of knowledge. Shizen people started from the idea that life is an opportunity for readjustments and evolution. Several masters, each with their own

importance, structured the knowledge and, for the first time, organized the knowledge network. Previously, knowledge was consigned according to the progress and development of the person (Bunkoga). In this process, masters say, there are no shortcuts. Most Shizen

brought with them a common aspiration: to experience things directly, as they are, in the present moment. For the Oita, life was something that happened in our mental states. In this way, they sought to release what binds, unmasks, peel, to finally reach the original state of each situation or moment. Thus, the Joho were classified as: - Kosao: small in his way of being. - Kasao: great in his way of being. The Kosao can be: - Gorosa - The one who aspires to understanding. - Murosa - The one that is still empty inside. - Yurosa - Someone who understands the precepts and knowledge, but has not assimilated it. - Togorosa - The one who has received the titles, but doesn’t act like the others. - Kogorosa – The one that is still small inside. - Gokorosa – The one who is still small spiritually. The Kasao can be: - Nenshare - He who is born prepared. - Nunshare – The one who has transcended the idea of matter. - Ninshare -The one who understands his role in the world before others. - Gunshare – The one who is spiritually great. To help us understand it, different masters have stated that what separates a "Kosao" from a "Kasao" is the internal noise that each one carries. A Joho Kosao deceives himself, at his wishes, constantly deceives himself with his inconstancy. His mind is loud, unpredictable, and constantly out of control. His daily life has many urges and needs; he wants many things. His mind

is almost always confused, dissonant, he goes through constant fluctuations of character and behavior, of posture. A Joho Kasao, in general, has a clear, lucid, empty, deep and uncomplicated mind. He seeks his individual path based on self-observation and constant improvement. He goes on his way without getting dirty or mingling with the storms of others.

The sacred ways of the Shizen culture If in the West the "sacred character of the human person" could only be slowly constituted as its moral form, for the Shizen the construction of the "sacred character" of the human person emerges as a component present from the origins of the "I", which knows learning (training) and its action in front of the visible and invisible worlds. However, the sense of "I" is accepted in its positive and negative aspects. They are divided into: - Gokure - The arrogant self - Muchikure - The ignorant self - Fukokure - The perceiving, seeing self. Fukokure can be two: - Afukokure - He who is able to see good and evil. - Ofukokure - He who is unable to see good and evil.

Fubokure - The fertile Being that can be cultivated On the other hand, the "I" is constituted as a "sacred category" since the Shizen separated life in tune with the forces and energies - Ebunto. The "sacredness of the

human person" in the East does not include a perfect connotation, at least not exclusively. It is through this recognition that teachers indicate a better path, or the best learning. The "Oita" were largely responsible for the idea of trying to avoid adopting the wrong point of view. The search for rationality as a form of understanding, defined clear

differences between Shizen's classes. It outlined a kind of search to preserve values and serve as a guide for the new generations. For the most important teachers, the knowledge of the "I" by the "self" indicates the possibility of the own construction and modeling of forms of subjectivity that will vary according to each time and epoch. From the

perspective of the Joho (masters), the sacred emerges as a way to stop the action of the Okuzoko, people with false backgrounds.

The Okuzoko can be divided into: - Okuzoko Buro: the one who deceives others. - Okuzoko Suno: One who only seeks his own interests. - Okuzoko Toro: one who is bad in his actions and attitudes

From the observer's perspective, Okuzoko appears as something figurative and constructed, provoking positive or negative reactions depending on the degree of affinity with which he or she is known and manifests himself or herself on cultural paths. In general, this form of desired subjectivity will vary according to one's personal contextualization. This is because the Okuzoko can be found in similar practices, or the same ones, linked to different purposes, with different processes of subjectivation. Added to this is the "mystical identification" of the Okuzoko who feels special, important, a sacred being.

On the other hand, the Kakufuko - correct, enlightened people, who seek the path without shortcuts or overcoming -, because they see the sacred "I" as timeless, the essential, which contrasts with time through the conservation of learned concepts, or who use them as a basis for progress and personal evolution, emerge as what is preserved as the real, what must be perpetuated.

Then there is the Tonbo, which rests behind the realities both of the ordered universe and of the human being, that so-called "walking self", as in the world ordered by time. This means that they have a particular way of approaching the continuity of time and life. For this reason, the Tonbo permeates the Shizen culture through the Shihobo: The continuous renewal or rebirth as a result of self-sacrifice.

Different times, different cultures and different parts of the world, yet all share certain universal fighting patterns and movements. Gladius Signum is the result of many years of study and practice in different combat systems, both melee and armed confrontation. Jukoshin Ryu. An effective self-defense system. The Jukoshin Ryu style of Jiu Jitsu was designed to be a powerful and definitive tool in hand-to-hand combat. A Personal Tribute to Professor Salem Assli One of the greatest Savate teachers of our time.... and the French Savate, one of the most efficient kickboxing systems of all time.

History Historians report that “Le” Savate (or “La” Savate) was originally developed by street fighters in France who aggressively used all parts of their bodies in confrontations. Sailors in southern France, it is said, developed a fight form (pr system) called the "Chausson," in which one foot was used to kick while one hand remained on the bottom of the boat to maintain balance. Micheal Casseux, one of the founders of Savate, spent a lot of time in certain drinking establishments and inappropriate places learning street fighting techniques. In his book, “The Theory of Savate”, Casseux divided Savate into 15 divisions of kicking techniques and 15 divisions of stick fighting (La Canne) movements. Casseux helped spread the French martial art by teaching it to the nobility of the time. Charles Lecour, one of Casseux's best students, was defeated by an English boxer named Owen Swift. Consequently, Lecour learned as much as he could from English boxing. The boxers used only the legs to advance or retreat, while the "Savateurs" considered the hands only as tools to block and parry. Lecor recognized the advantages of both systems and combined them, creating the Boxe Française Savate. Around 1850 Louis Vigneron was one of the most famous experts of his time. One of his most famous students was the famous Joseph Charlemont, who wrote several books that contributed to the spread of Savate and La Canne. His work contributed to the systematization and perfection of the two arts. In this work Charlemont combines the Savate with La Canne and the wrestling style from the city of Paris.

The essence of Savate Savate is an impact sport that uses arms and legs to strike with power, grace, and precision. One of the main differences between Savate and other similar styles is the use of the shoe for kicking. The natives who used Savate wore boots and shoes because the climate in France did not allow them to go barefoot as in Southeast Asia. In this way, the art of fighting with the feet became not only a tradition, but also a science of fighting. In street fighting, the shoe became an extremely effective weapon when used by someone who had mastered the techniques of Savate. No one who had received a powerful "Chassé" against the legs, a precise "Fouetté" against the stomach, or even an unpredictable "Coup de pie pas" against the shin could doubt its effectiveness. The main idea behind the use of the shoe is that by covering the foot, there is no risk of injury to the toes and a great variety of attack possibilities are offered. For example, during a fight, if the practitioner wants to hit the belly of his opponent and on the way finds his elbow, it is very likely that he will break a toe. It is more limited, and the blow would usually damage the opponent. Another difference from other arts is the existing contact. At all levels of practice contact in Savate is a "must". Respect for the partner is the "golden rule" and both practitioners must strike but still have their attacks under control.

Main differences In Savate there are no "Katas" (set forms, as is the case in karate or kung-fu), but there are "combinations" called "liasons" (meaning "connections"), such as "liasons poing-pied" (hands and legs), "liasons pied-poing" (legs and hands), "liasons pieds-pieds-pieds" or "liasons poing-pieds-poing". The practice of these combinations requires balance, distance, and precision, as well as a sense of space and time. The techniques are performed according to different angles, lines, and principles. The possible combinations are almost unlimited. Savate has kicks at all heights. Originally, Savate was an art of "leg fencing." To make the art more effective, Charles Lecour integrated English boxing with fists in 1833, creating French boxing. Savate is based on traditions but is constantly evolving and refining. In Savate, practitioners do not have to "copy" their teacher's technique but understand and apply the principles. Savate is an excellent method of selfexpression. No two people are alike, and therefore Savate is different for each person, depending on their physical characteristics, speed, and mentality. There are several reasons to practice Savate. Just for fun, for self-defense, for the agonistic part of the sport, etc. Savate, which originated on the street, is a lethal self-defense system, but for many practitioners, this aspect is considered secondary within the French Savate Federation, as is the case with Muay Thai (Thai boxing). The competition rules in Savate are very well structured. The strict competition rules encourage the "Savateur" to get the best out of himself and his techniques, thus promoting the sporting aspect of the art. The "forbidden" techniques, on the other hand, are practiced only for selfdefense. With its elastic stances and noble posture, Savate has an aesthetic that is not found in other martial arts. This aspect is very well received by women and makes it a perfect method that combines self-defense with elegance and effectiveness.

Full body - full power "In Savate, I learned to use the "swinging motion" for more power. For medium and high kicks, the standing leg is kept straight, for low kicks it is bent. I prefer low kicks against the front leg to stop the opponent's advance, to manage distance, to combine it with an entry as used in our Jiu-Jitsu. However, with Savate training I have also begun to appreciate the understanding and use of medium and even high kicks, maybe not necessarily in street situations, but certainly to increase my flexibility and efficiency of movement." -Franco Vacirca

Graduation system As in other martial arts, Savate has its own progression and graduation system. Instead of different colored belts, the color of the gloves is used. It is not that the gloves change color, it is just an expression of the technical grade, for this the "Savateur" wears a cloth badge on the left side of the chest with the color of the grade he (or she) holds. The first technical grade is the "blue glove", followed by "green" and "red", indicating the intermediate grade. Then come the "white" and the "yellow glove". Then comes the "silver glove" - the highest technical award with levels "1", "2" and "3". Muay Thai Muay Sakon and the forgotten science of the vertical punch Exponents of ancient fighting arts such as Pankration and Pugilatum, European medieval combat arts’ experts, Chinese martial artists and Siamese warriors, they all knew the efficiency of the straight vertical punch for hand to hand fighting. Also 18th century bare-knuckle boxers and fighters with gloves in 19th and early 20th century in Europe and America, who made a science of fist fighting, used to throw straight punches in the thumb up position. This way of punching is opposed to the palm down fist position that is common in many Martial Arts as well as in modern Boxing. In Thailand, according to Master Chaisawat, the standard hand position for straight punching is thumb up. The original reason was that a warrior who carried a sword (the Thai Daab, in this case) may be forced to punch straight forward in close range fighting situations. It is clear that to do that he had to keep his closed hand vertical because twisting his fist was not an option while the sword was in his hand.

are-handed techniques followed the biomechanics of armed fighting: therefore the basic straight head punch was executed with a vertical fist. Furthermore, the style of northeast Thailand, Muay Korat, has made the vertical straight punch a true trademark of that system, feared by the exponents of all other regional styles of Muay. The question is: why this efficient hand position so common in the past is no more practised nowadays, when thousands of expert fighters around the globe have used it with great results for centuries? The answer may be found in the words of Boxing’s great Jack Dempsey who studied punching for real fighting like very few of his fellow champions ever did. In his 1950 text book on Fist Fighting (i.e., the sweet science of self-defence, not the sport of Boxing) titled Championship Fighting: explosive punching and aggressive defence he made clear that a fundamental concept in punching is the principle of power lines. In straight punching, the power line is an imaginary line that runs from the body through the shoulder and elbow of the puncher and exits at the 3 bottom knuckles of the vertical fist. Since this position is anatomically strong and safe for the striker, it is the purest and more powerful way to throw a straight punch. According to Dempsey, the basics of real punching are not taught to beginners and the extremely important concept of the power line has been forgotten by modern trainers and athletes.

Let’s try to further analyse this concept In bare-knuckle punching it is advisable to strike with the largest and flattest surface of the closed fist in order to spread the force of the impact over a larger area. That means it is right to hit with the three lowest knuckles, i.e., the pinkie, the ring finger and the middle finger. The ring finger knuckle is the viewfinder we shall use to aim the target. Therefore, since by striking with the bottom part of the fist you get a straight line from the hand to the elbow and from the elbow to the shoulder, the vertical punch is anatomically more solid than the palm down

punch. This way of striking, based on correct body mechanics, offers the most solid line to absorb the kinetic energy of the strike. When you exert your energy on a solid object (the target) you will get back the same amount of energy. This is Newton’s 3rd law of physics: for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. part of it) absorbs the energy of the blow that is projected back into the striking hand. The easiest way to “feel” this (as Dempsey advocates) is to stiffly extend your arm towards a wall pressing your fist held in the vertical position at chin-height. Lean your body and let your arm support all your weight. You will notice that the 3 lowest knuckles provide a natural solid support to your weight. You will feel a strong line of energy that runs from your body to your shoulder, elbow, wrist and the 3 lowest knuckles. You are actually feeling the vertical straight punches’ power line. That’s the famous “three knuckles landing” that Jack Dempsey considered the best application of a pure power line. A vertical straight punch has many possible application, as far as the distance from the opponent is concerned. The most obvious applications are at a long range but even at close range it can be an impressive weapon.

• Long range applications Most of the times, a vertical straight punch ought to be used to attack the opponent from a distance, while out-fighting. An explosive forward step and a well-timed straight lead is all you need to knock your opponent out cold. This is what Jack Dempsey called explosive punching: step forward as if you were falling down and throw you punch along the power line, remembering to aim with the ring finger knuckle. In Muay Lert Rit the kind of energy expressed by the powerful combination of forward step and simultaneous straight blow is called "the poisoned arrow". In fact, the punch thrown with this explosive power is comparable to an arrow thrown by a large bow which causes irreparable damage if it connects with vulnerable targets. Indeed, if you connect with the opponent’s chin, jaw, eye socket or nose, chances are he will be put down and out. At long range, you can also apply the step and vertical punch against roundhouse kicks (like in the Combat Muay Boran technique called "the crow pecks the egg"). When the opponent is starting to turn his hips to swing his leg, waste no time and take a quick forward step exploding with a powerful vertical straight punch, smashing into the target (his face, throat or side of the head). A quick knock out is oftentimes the dramatic result of this maneuver.

• Short range applications

In some instances you are forced to punch from a short distance from the target. This is the case of grappling situations where you don’t want to wrestle with the opponent and instead you prefer to trap and strike. Even at grappling range, a vertical straight punch may be your best choice to quickly knock your opponent out. In fact, the vertical punch also allows for great power at short distance from the target. This is mainly due to the anatomically correct position of the shoulder. In fact, when the arm is extended in front of you and the fist is in the thumb up position, the shoulder is naturally connected to the body and is locked in a position that strongly connects your body mass with your arm, This is a guarantee of optimal energy transfer and safety for the striker upon impact.

Arts with Roots THE SILARAM FENCING ART - CACHABA, VARA GITANA (GYPSY STICK) Silaram Fencing comes from the Rom People (Gypsy), who inhabited in the regions of Punjab and Sinth, northwest of India, more than 3500 years ago. It's an ancient Fencing and Self-Defense method, whose knowledge has been passed down from parents to children and sons-in-law, for generations. In the 11th century, because of the Arab and Mongol wars and invasions, the Rom people were gradually forced to move to Persia, looking for places where they could live in peace. But their journey did not end there and, pushed again by the constant invasions of the time, in the thirteenth century they began their migratory movement towards Europe, where they penetrated at the

Arts with Roots beginning of the fourteenth century, arriving in Spain a century later. Throughout their historic exodus, they came into contact with different cultures, with which they exchanged knowledge and learned new ways of defense and handling weapons, thus enriching and making their traditional method of defense evolve.

Arts with Roots he handling of the Vara alternates the grip at one or two hands, with quick and short swirling movements. The resistance, toughness and flexibility of movements make the Vara Gitana a very fast and effective self-defense tool, offering a natural response to an aggressor. The Vara movements are usually light, and can be even more effective thanks to the ferrule that can be carried on the tip, since the use of the counterweight makes the blow stronger and more forceful. In a downward blow, the ferrule increases the centrifugal force, which gives the blow a lethal power, being able to break bones and cause multiple fractures in any part of the body.

Arts with Roots The Vara Gitana has always been used as an instrument to play "the Vara game", that consists of handling the Vara against the opponent, and in which there are 15 different ways to hit the opponent.

THE FENCING ART OF THE CHURI ROMA, THE KNIFE AND GYPSY SCISSORS The Rom (Gypsy) Knife and Scissors fencing became known in Spain at the beginning of the 15th century, after Silaram Fencing had adapted been to the handling of the Dagger, during its 600-year migratory journey through Europe until it reached Spain. Later, in 1425, it was also adapted to the Gypsy Knife and Scissors. Another type of blade weapon fighting method whose identity, roots and handling must be sought in the Gypsy Bandits and Hagglers of old, is that of the Navaja (Gypsy switchblade), a fencing of its own that was exercised with the left hand wrapped up with their capes. Alternating with the left hand, the right hand, holding the large Sevillian switchblade, sought the opponent's body weak points to finish the fight as quickly as possible. This type of fencing consisted of natural movements and techniques such as lunges, cuts, and explosive stitches, with defense and attack at the same time, and direct and effective movements. The identity, purpose and objective of Fencing in itself is that of eliminating the opponent, and it's based on certain aspects, concepts and logic. The foundations of his work were adapted to Silaram Fencing, and that's the way it is today. The teaching of Traditional Art has been reduced exclusively to the sphere of gypsy families.

My first seminar with Guro Dan Inosanto aniel Arca Inosanto, born in 1936 in Stockton, California, is one of today's foremost experts, Masters and promoters of the Martial Arts. In this column, I would like to describe my first encounter with Guro Dan Inosanto, a totally unforgettable experience for me. In 1985, I was a very young Kung-Fu practitioner and I was very nervous and uneasy about meeting this famous student and friend of Bruce Lee. I had read several of his books and articles, I knew that he had his own school in Los Angeles and that he taught not only Bruce Lee's art, but also other combat systems - which was tremendously important in my case - and that he also frequently gave seminars in Europe. I decided to attend one of them, a trip to Lille, in the north of France, where about 20 people and I were waiting for him in a municipal pavilion on a very unpleasant day. He arrived accompanied by his assistant, Cass Magda, both carrying two backpacks with sticks and the first thing I noticed was their friendly way of behaving. Despite the great respect shown by the students, Dan Inosanto and Cass Magda were totally relaxed, friendly and open. An attitude that helped me immensely in the subsequent training. The factors that impressed me the most were the broad content of the course, the speed and the method used by Guro Inosanto to teach us. From Kali to empty hands, JKD, energy drills and stick defense (Escrima), mitten drills (Kali) and all at an incredible speed. The hours flew by and the seminar was an extraordinary experience, very interesting and hard at the same time. Normally in his seminars, Guro Dan teaches several series of movements instead of isolated techniques, so that they can be integrated into one's own training and combined with other parts of the course. Guro Inosanto is an extraordinary guide who combines the practical part with theory, archives, photos and historical documents. In a few hours I received a complete introduction to the three distances of combat, an impressive series of techniques and examples of how one can/should train, and even a lecture on the history of each martial discipline we trained in that seminar. Until then, I had never seen anything like it, I could not believe it, although it was not the last surprise of the course. The second day I was very lucky, I had an advanced partner, who helped me a lot, both to better understand and assimilate the concepts, and to provide me with study material to take home. Guro Dan frequently explains the principles and "user manuals" of the different martial disciplines with similar techniques and movements, which I find very interesting, because it facilitates the connection and at the same time the contrast of the technical background of each one and what is even more important: the hidden structure behind the techniques

appears and is appreciable, even for a novice. Thus one comes to understand the theoretical "why" as well as the keys to why some work and others do not. I insist it was an extraordinary event, very exciting as well as complicated, at least for me it was difficult to assimilate all these novelties. The feeling can be compared to the step that exists when you leave school and attend the first course at the University. In addition to the art of Bruce Lee, Inosanto showed us fundamentals, techniques, routines and exercises of Filipino Kali, Indonesian Silat, Muay Thai, Bando (Burma) and French Savate. Until then I did not know that all these countries had their own fighting system and I did not even know the potential of each one. Guro Inosanto taught me that you should never judge a system if you have not trained it long enough. He transmits such important concepts as the need to keep an "open mind" in the face of novelties, the ability to understand that all Martial Arts have their value and the possibility of developing them, even the need for each one to abandon the novice level, that is, to think about other styles or systems in order to approach the core of the Arts: the essence and its application. In this sense, the learning process never comes to an end, but rather, depending on the time, age, experience and perseverance of the student, higher levels are climbed in this process. That weekend I heard a series of very important ideas that exerted a powerful influence on my concept of the Martial Arts and that I immediately integrated into my training and experience. I am aware that much is written about Guro Dan Inosanto and therefore I would like to conclude this column by dedicating to him a phrase of a friend of mine: "He is the student that every Master desires and the Master that every student would prefer".

When most people hear the word Kyusho, or the words Pressure Points, it is one of two things that come to mind ... Self Defense or a healing modality such as Acupuncture or Massage Therapy. In each instance, they are correct. There are some who focus mostly on the self defense aspect and other whose focus is more into the healing. I personally know of several people who trained with me and became so excited about manipulating the Pressure Points for self defense that they enrolled in Acupuncture classes, Massage Classes and Chiropractic Classes. Each area of study requires extensive focus on the mechanics of the body and how the practitioner can "assist" the body into healing itself. This is not an end all be all and each patient must be accountable for their health and lifestyle habits. This video will focus on how we can use the same 5 points for both healing and self defense. This is where knowledge of anatomy, basic principles of motion, and developing a sensitive touch come into play. Pressure Points have multiple uses for both health and self defense and can be a great complement to one another. For each to be effective, the practitioner must develop a quiet, relaxed mind, which can assess each situation to hopefully bring about the result desired.
