I am Gianluca Frisan, National Referent of the Kyusho CSEN and European Reference of the Kyusho Institute, I welcome you to the new Kyusho Breakdown DVD series. First of all, I want to thank my Master Mark Kline, founder of the Kyusho Institute, an international Kyusho organization, for all the teachings that he has given me since 1997 and continues to give me. Much of what we will discuss today is the result of my training with GM Mark Kline. So thanks again! Bunkai means Analysis, and we will analyze in the first DVD of this series, a “basic” movement, the Gedan Barai, also called “lower block", a movement that is found in almost every Kata of every Karate style. We will see the applications of our Kyusho CSEN / Kyusho Institute program, analyzing them through the knowledge of Kyusho, bearing in mind that the objective is not that of sports but personal defense. Democracy is a complex system grounded on several pillars and based on a type of education that is not improvised, and that requires several generations of "full stomachs" before someone starts worrying about other "minor" issues, such as whether your neighbor may or may not build his roof red, or you can smoke indoors. Even so, in the sixties, for the convenience of the American empire, the naive idea of converting the whole world to the new religion of democracy was finally imposed. It inevitably failed in Vietnam, as it did in the rest of the attempts, and its success against its Soviet archenemy, in reality had more to do with the failure of communism itself, than with the success of the Western system. In fact, the Soviet model failed, but it nevertheless illuminated the Communist model of China, a country that today has become the world’s leading power. The truth is that Europe is already invaded, and the idea of multicultural societies collides head-on with the idea of the government of the people. If there are enough voters, constitutions can be changed, there is no immovable model of life. There is a struggle between those who speak in favor of “integration” and the cultural and socio-economic reality in almost all the countries of Europe. Who will win, integration or supination? I am not optimistic at all if we look at the data: London attacks were carried out by third-generation and nationalized immigrants. On one occasion, perhaps because I was doing Martial Arts, I was selected to accompany a commander, a sergeant and several soldiers, to "expel a Moor" who had built his house a few meters inside a military space. For that task I was given a loaded submachine gun! Things ended up well because the guy was calm and didn’t want problems, but I had a hard time watching more and more neighbors just the same line peek out, as the minutes passed. When the Turkish president had an election he wanted to go to Germany to hold a rally... The list goes on and on! That’s how it is. And look at the tigers dressed as lambs! Under the patina of supposed democracies, they turn out to be the worst. Let us not kid ourselves, democracy is not going to put a vote in a box every four years. Civilization and the Western way of life are a fragile garden and the jungle is large. The winds of history make empires, civilizations and ways of life rise and fall. Everything that rises remains for a time and then necessarily, and if it lives long enough, it declines and disappears. In whatever way we want to look at it, unfortunately from our small point of view, America and Europe have it all wrong; the great civilizations disappeared rotting from within, as much as from having been exposed to the natural circumstances of their surroundings, whether these were socio-economic, climatic, or social. It’s not a question of race, in reality it isn’t even a matter of cultures; when things like demographics are at stake, we just have to remember the communicating vessels physics principle: even if you don't open the cap, sooner or later the full tube will overflow and half its contain will end up filling in the other tube. Do you mean that we shouldn't do anything? No! But whatever we do, let it be based on realities, not on dreams, good wishes or mirages; nor on tender Rousseau models of the "good wild" type. The narrow margin of action left by the hippie morality of these "do-gooders" times must be overtaken by a more outspoken vision of what there is, and the premise that there aren't enough flowers for everyone in our garden. That, or, instead of roses, we better start growing onions and return to the plow, but in this modern Europe, who wants to make an effort? Who can put aside the idea of how good we are? Or are we ready to pay the price? Like all great civilizations... we will die of success... At least when it happens, let it be with our eyes wide open and not patting ourselves on the back. We will do it basing ourselves on my training in Ryukyu Kempo, where perhaps the precision of the movements and the technique are not exactly the same as in many styles of Karate; indeed, timing in the movements will likely be different from traditional styles, but each movement will have a reason and a purpose. I would advise you not to look for the differences with what you already practice, rather try to understand the meaning and affinities, and thus increase your arsenal by including something else in your training. If we can make clear just a small detail, a principle, the objective of this DVD will have been achieved. When a Kata or form is purely aesthetic, it has no value for self-defense. Each movement must have a deep meaning for the practitioner; in fact, at least three. The same movement can be done differently, depending on what is currently being visualized, that is, the actual action that I am experiencing while practicing the form; only then will the Kata be alive and real, and it will turn into a superior and useful way of training. I believe that practicing Kata, Kihon or any kind of individual training is essential for any serious martial artist. First Kyusho Gedan Barai Bunkai: In our system, the first movement, which teaches many principles, is called "Hair technique", since when we perform it we grab the opponent's hair. It may seem like a rather crude action, but let's keep our goal in mind… to save ourselves from a street assault! If I grab the aggressor's hair I can control his head, and if I control his head I'll be able to control his whole body. It's a violent but effective action. This is what we do with Kyusho, but we want more. We want a technical skill that can support our Kyusho actions. Because in reality anything can happen. We want to have a solid technical arsenal on which we can pour all our Kyusho knowledge. Personally, I want the turbo (Kyusho) to my good technique (the engine) with a basic strategy (the car with all the accessories) so that everything works effectively and efficiently. Just having the turbo is not enough. The Bunkai actions that we will see today in this DVD are a set of strategies (closing the distance) analyzed in detail in the DVD "Close encounter", of principles and technique; we will use the Tuite (manipulating of joints) and the Kyusho (the attacks on the system neurological and vascular system), to have a complete and advanced vision already from the very bases of what real Kyusho is.

Technique: Grasped by the chest, I defend myself by attacking on Lung 5 / radial nerve with my forearm. The action must be deep enough to crush and stretch the nerve. I must follow a hook trajectory if I want to cause a neurological reaction that causes the opponent’s knees to collapse, while the opposing limb moves away from the affected arm and his body slightly rotates. I will then grab his hair closing the distance and I will go on to perform my Gedan Barai and bring him to the ground. In the dynamics, the nape of the aggressor will impact my tibia in the Gall bladder 20 area.

Kyusho Gedan Barai Bunkai first variation: If the attacker is bald, with no hair, the variant is simple. I will attack the lung 5 / radial nerve as before, and instead of grabbing his hair I will hit on the Gall Bladder 20 pressure point, from the back to the front, from the top to the forehead of the opposite side. I will close all the spaces, checking the attacker's head with my shoulder. In this position I will have "wedged" the opponent's body into my "loading". Using the rotation of the body, the trajectory of the Gedan Barai and the weight of the Taisabaki movement, I will bring the opponent to the ground in the same position as in the "hair technique". The position of the torso is essential, we are upright and with as little space as possible, as we don't have to pull the arm (muscle strength) but to use the weight of the whole body. The position of the legs is also fundamental, with the inner leg slightly inwards in a natural position to ensure stability and balance, and to position the tibia in the direction of the opponent's neck, so it hits the

Triple Heater 11. This pressure point is located about two "inches" from the tip of the elbow. The Golgi Apparatus located in this area monitors and relaxes the elbow when we rub / vibrate on the specific area. By relaxing the arm and causing an instant neurological reaction, with our action on the Triple Heater 11 pressure point, we will be able to break the structure of the aggressor and position it perfectly for the next attack on the nape. Gall Bladder 20 will be a great target to continue our action. We always must keep in mind, and with time and training it will become something automatic, that in order to have a good, predictable and destabilizing Kyusho reaction, we need to know: • The pressure point to be attacked, with the correct angle and direction. For those not familiar with acupuncture pressure points, the anatomical area is perfect and the same. Nothing changes, only the teaching and the language with which we communicate the changes. Pressure points only serve to understand exactly what and where we are talking about, the anatomical area is a more Western view that allows us to analyze the structures on which we are going to act ... the only real essence remains to master the art of Kyusho. I have to get my hands on as many people as possible and try to experiment and feel when and where I can attack the inside and not just the surface ... then whether we call it Lung 5 or Radial Nerve ... nothing changes. • The correct anatomical weapon with which we are going to act on the pressure points. It could be a protruding knuckle, a closed fist, an open hand, a forearm, a part

of the foot ... any weapon! I must understand, however, that every anatomical weapon "fits better" in certain places. It will therefore be more effective! • The so-called “force multipliers”, the true key of Kyusho! The rotations of the wrist are the first step, but then the whole body interacts with an internal spiral movement that generates vibration and allows you to attack the innermost structures by sending deep neurological stimuli. The human body is structured to withstand perpendicular impacts, but it doesn't

tolerate those attacks generically called at 45°, moreover it can't stand the discontinuous pressures and changes of direction that are automatically generated when we learn to use our whole body as a force multiplier.

We will act on the opponent's wrist by turning it upwards to automatically position the Triple Heater 11 with the perfect angle of attack for our Gedan Barai. We can go on by attacking the closest and most accessible pressure points. This is another of the keys to Kyusho. I cannot predetermine what I will attack first, but I will flow and adapt to the opponent's reactions, consequently attacking whatever might be available. Certainly, reactions are predictable, so I can have a more or less clear picture of the way my opponent might turn and position himself, but everyone has a different and personal sensitivity as well as a different resistance, therefore, they all can react in a more intense or less obvious way, even if it's still predictable. It's up to us to develop the ability to know where to attack to get the best result. Another skill to develop with an experienced Instructor is the correct choice of attack timing. Better to break free by putting the aggressor in a defensive position both physically and mentally, or even disabling him to continue with other actions. Staying with today's topic - Gedan Barai -, we can use the "charge" to cross the attacker's arms, and the subsequent Gedan Barai to free ourselves and leave the opponent "locked in" in a deadlock, and vulnerable to any of our Kyusho attacks. Let us remember that we are stronger when we clos our arms than when we open them. Anatomically, more muscles come into play, and this may compensate some physical handicap as well. Knowledge of anatomy and biomechanics is paramount for a good Kyusho, but it's also essential for a good technique.

Fifth Kyusho Gedan Barai Bunkai Push your chest with one hand. Let's analyze now, having seen different solutions to grab attacks with a single response, the Gedan Barai, in a push situation. If I have controlled the distance well, and I am able to get ahead my opponent, I can move 45° forward and deflect the thrust. The specular hand will be the one to carry out the diverting, since it will be the closer one to the attack, and, consequently, the hand with the shorter way to deflect the push, as well as the fastest one to intercept any attack. Of course, I can also use the cross hand to intercept, but only if I am the one who offers a target to be attacked, positioning myself correctly before the opponent starts the push. If, on the other hand, I have to react to a sudden impulse, although in controlling the distance it’s still more effective to get used to always using the specular hand ... when we train the exercises under intense stress and with multiple attacks, reality will come true evident. You can find some exercises in the first "First encounter" DVD. The three-stroke entry adapts very well to this situation and will allow us to place a hand as control in the wrist area in action, on the radial nerve (Lung 8), and a forearm on the Triple Heater 12 point. This pressure point works well when hit. A perpendicular percussion on that point, which is located midway between the shoulder and the elbow, on the back of the arm, will completely destabilize the attacker's structure. His knees will bend, the arm and leg opposite the attacked side will be extended, and the head will suddenly move back.

My Gedan Barai that will follow the hit on Triple Heater 12 (loading of Gedan Barai) will allow me to act on the Triple Heater 11 point with a friction / vibration which, as previously said, is the most suitable action to stimulate the Apparatus of Golgi, and create the neurological reactions that I wanted. In addition, the Gedan Barai trajectory will allow me to exert a continuous action throughout the technique, maintaining the perfect angle and direction throughout its course from top to bottom. Analyzed in slow motion, it will be easy to understand that the opponent’s arm changes position in space, rotating and moving, but the action of Gedan Barai will keep the friction perpendicular all the time! As before, I can continue the action by attacking with my leg and fist. After a Gedan Barai there’s often an Oi Tsuki, a thrust advancing punch, the meaning of which often is not just that of a fist ... but an attack on the closest and most accessible pressure points, with either the advancing leg, or the fist or both. In the basic Bunkai I will limit myself to percussion actions ... but keep in mind that the same mechanical action could be a Kyusho percussion, a Tuite joint manipulation, a cervical attack…

Sixth Kyusho Gedan Barai Bunkai One-handed push to the chest. This time our reaction will be slightly delayed, not having the possibility to move in advance, or because the force of the push is so high that we have to redirect it so as not to have to counter it. We’ll attack with our "charge" of Triple Heater 5 and Heart 2 simultaneously. The outside of the pushing arm will be hit on the Triple Heater 5, without obvious reactions, although, in reality, this stimulus will activate all the subsequent points, while the inside of the arm will be hit with the fist knuckles on Heart 2. An action at 45º, from back to front towards the elbow ... and the attacker will feel sharp pain and an electric shock all along his arm. The effect will be a rotation of the arm upwards, a bending of the knees, and an arching of the torso forward. All this will facilitate the continuation of my technique, a lever to the arm from behind, with subsequent percussion to the back with my ... Gedan Barai. We will keep control of the lever always with our action on Heart 2, while the percussion will be carried out on the Governor Vessel 16 point of pressure, at the base of the nape at 45º towards the forehead. Practice this technique always under the supervision of a qualified instructor who has mastered the correct Kyusho resuscitation techniques.

Kyusho Jitsu Seventh Kyusho Gedan Barai Bunkai Finger lock is a possible application for a Gedan Barai. From the contact of a hand to the chest, I can recess the chest and rotate to have control and create some space so as to be able to grasp the fingers of the aggressor. Following the basic principle for a good Tuite: fulcrum, lever, base, I can manipulate the joints of the hand, but also the elbow, shoulder, and to the opposite hip, in order to place the aggressor laterally, and in a way that he cannot hit me. My fingers will be my lever; the joint of connection between fingers and hand, my fulcrum; Pericardium 6 my base. With my forearm I will press against the median nerve (Pericardium 6) to enter pain and neurological stimulus, but also to block the only possible escape direction from the lever. This will allow me with the basic position of "charging" to have a powerful finger lock. I can conclude with a percussion on the back of the head at several available pressure points. The only limit to the applications of a basic movement is our imagination. Clearly I have to keep a logic and have a welldefined goal in my applications. Staying in our vision of using pressure points as well as the knowledge of anatomy and reactions of the human body, with the aim of resolving self-defense situations, we will now analyze an attack from behind. The attacker will cling to us to control us with a grip from the shoulders and over our arms. Our "charge", once again, will be our instinctive reaction. We will step forward due to the thrust of the aggressor's action, and simultaneously we will put our arms above him to control and block. The arching of the back and the lowering of the center of gravity will allow me to maintain my correct posture and take motor control of the action. With a rotation (Taisabaki) we will come out of the grip, and we could attack with our "Gedan Barai" the crossed and therefore weak arms of the opponent. Once again the Triple Heater 11 will be our best friend, along with the subsequent blow on the Gall Bladder 20. There are many other applications for this “basic movement”, but in this DVD we have analyzed the main ones of our system. A solid foundation to then build the whole system in its most advanced parts. Understanding and mastering not the technique itself but the principles it teaches us is the key! There is no doubt women have played a major role in the martial arts especially in the last decade. From the likes of Master Instructor Keiko Fukuda - 1913 to 2013, Cynthia Rothrock, Michelle Yeoh and Rhonda Rousey to name just a few and of course with all due respect, hundreds more not mentioned. With individuals like these, no wonder females ar e inspired in taking part in the world of martial arts. If you watch movies or television, you are seeing more and more women taking responsibility to defend themselves versus fifty years ago. Whether it is Tai Chi, Judo, Jiu Jitsu, Boxing, Kick Boxing, Muay Thai, MMA, Karate, Kung Fu, Tae Kwon Do or weaponry, you name it, women are players and it is a wonderful thing! So what is self defense? For the most part self defense pertains to protecting oneself, your loved ones or even an innocent person fr om harm through the use of physical force. There are though a few levels of “use of force”. Here are the five (5) levels of “use of force” practiced in the training program we teach against possible aggressive confrontations.

Ariel Flores Mosses Level 1. “VERBAL” The use of verbal communication can be very effective. Talking an aggressive person down or even giving a command. This may lead to no physical contact which is your best outcome. Level 2. “SOFT” When verbal communication fails and you must physically defend yourself, SOFT tactics can be applied such as sweeps, takedowns and submission techniques. Level 3. “HARD” techniques such as elbows, eye gouging, biting, hair pulling, knee

strikes, punching and kicking. The amount of force that can cause connective tissue damage or bone fractures. OC or pepper spray can be part of this level as well as the 4th. Level 4. “WEAPONS” Utilization of non lethal improvised impact weapons such as a rolled up magazine, writing pen (or tactical pen), tennis racket, baton/rataan sticks. Basically, your Hard impact weapon to their Soft area of their body. and again with the amount of force that can cause connective tissue damage or bone fractures.

Guns, machetes, knives, batons/Ratana sticks (per say beating them to death) are more common in this level of force. Many countries do not allow firearms but lethal force can still be used.

Dispatching emergency personnel, law enforcement or calling on bystanders to assist you in the result of any injuries. Depending on the situation, use of force levels can jump from 2 through 5 without the use of level 1. Become knowledgeable with related consequences and legal ramifications of your actions. Whether you are holding a tennis racquet, a rolled up magazine or the butt end of a stick. You can also use the same technique by striking with the butt end of a knife handle or the use of pistol whipping. This would fall into level 4 of use of force as you would not use the sharp end of a knife nor shoot at your attacker. PEN1. Velda is aware of a possible attack from KB and prepares to defend herself with a tactical pen. PEN 2. KB initiates an attack and Velda reacts and surprises KB by closing the gap while using a “roof block”. PEN 3. Velda immediately counters with a hammer fist strike with her tactical pen to KB’s facial and neck area.

SHAOLIN Qi Gong Academy On other occasions I have written for this magazine articles about Qi Gong, although most of them were about Shaolin Kung fu. The pandemic left us between a rock and a hard place, and many of us were driven into a new field that was previously unknown, or at least undiscovered to me, which is the online world. Who could have said a year ago that apar t fr om my face-to-face classes, courses, etc., I'd end up teaching online. Without a doubt, it's been quite a discovery!

But you must adapt to the new times, as they say, adapt or die, so, after checking that in my online Shaolin Kung fu classes some students who started from scratch progressed so well, I decided that the time had come; whether you liked it or not, you had to take the step, mainly because nothing would be the same as before., Mostly because nothing would be the same as before. This is why I decided to open my Qi Gong Academy online. But, why Qi Gong and not Kung fu? I guess you are wondering ... Well, it turns out that the practice of Shaolin Qi Gong was something that I discovered many years ago and that I integrated into my daily practice, but not into my public teaching; something that I taught at times in camps, in China, in courses, but mostly I took it as an exclusive practice for me, for my personal growth. other. Currently, I use the Qi gong practice to improve my focus on a day-to-day basis and thus be able to organize my activities more effectively. As you see, you can give it different approaches, it all depends on what you want to get or the stage you are going through. Undoubtedly, Shaolin Qi gong is a great contribution to our day-to-day regardless of the Martial Art we do, it can be adapted to everything. I had, and I am lucky enough to keep having the guidance and teaching of my Sifu, Grand Master Shi De Yang, with whom I had the honor of being able to learn the art of the Shaolin Qi gong. Perhaps many do not know, but my master also specializes in this discipline. In fact, he's already published several books on the subject and precisely in his visits to Spain, he taught the routines of Ba Duan Jin, Yi jin jing and Feng bai liu.

The latter was unknown to the public in general, and until very recently it was only taught at the Temple behind closed doors. Shaolin Temple has a long history in the practice of Qi gong and not only in the practice of Martial Arts. Shaolin Qi gong is integrated with the philosophy and practice of Chan (Zen) and also with Martial Arts and Traditional Chinese Medicine. The Shaolin Kung fu school is rich in content, as it has innumerable Martial Arts routines and, according to their nature, they are divided into Qi gong, Nei gong, Wai gong, Ying gong and Qing gong. Qi gong is a system of exercises for deep breathing and cultivation of Qi. Nei Gong is based on the practice of the spirit and Qi. Wai gong and Ying Gong generally refer to the expression of power or strength of a certain part of the body. Finally, Qing gong specializes in training in high jumps and long jumps. If we classify Shaolin Kung Fu according to techniques, there are more than 100 types of Martial Arts skills, such as boxing techniques, stick techniques, spear techniques, sword techniques and saber

techniques, among others. The routines or forms of Shaolin Kung fu include 178 types of boxing, 193 types of forms with weapons, 59 forms of two-man combat and another 115 types, among which we can count the 72 special techniques. Of course, however, there are many more that have been lost throughout the history of the Temple. We can say that Shaolin Qi Gong is deeply influenced by Buddhism and that its style is characterized by being simple, fluid, powerful and vigorous. His method is a way of practicing Buddhism where it's emphasized paying attention to one's mental state during practice. The goal is to strengthen the body and eliminate all distractions and purify the body and mind through Zen meditation, so it is here that Shaolin Qi gong is a powerful tool against the evil of our century, STRESS, as well as an excellent ally to complement the practice whatever your style or Martial Art. Sifu Vincent Lyn is the heir of a style with deep roots in the history of Kung Fu: the Ling Gar Kung Fu, an art which combines internal and external principles. Sifu Lyn is a man of great talents: besides being and expert master of Martial Arts and Oriental Medicine, in addition he is also an exceptional musician, a sportsman and an actor. Out of over 300 different Chinese Kung Fu styles, only three of them are considered really "internal" ones: Hsing I Chuan, Pa Kua Chang and Tai Chi Chuan. All other Kung Fu systems are considered external and stem from the teachings of Da Mo (Bodhidharma) and the Shaolin tradition. The first part of the video is dedicated to Tai Chi Chuan, of which Sifu Lyn shows two forms of different internal styles: "Harness the Wind", belonging to the family style Tai Chi Ling Gar, which dates back 650 years, and "Mountain Form", originally from Wudang Temple, in Hubei Province of northern China. Lockdown, Wing Chun and a changing Lifestyle So as the world is finally about to break out of a year of lockdown and staying safe to the fight against what has been the controversial year of 2020/2021, a year that we have seen our way of living change, not due to wars but to a small virus called Covid-19 and this is about how I personally did to change my lifestyle, what I’ve learnt and changed about myself to which I hope will inspire you and many others to make some changes themselves now, or if anything like this year happens again, giving you a challenge to become more than you were when it started.

eing a Martial Arts Instructor during 2020/2021 has probably been one of the biggest challenges we have had to face, whether it was a closure of your club or school and moving online, finding other ways to keep your students training and practicing the art they had started. Not only is it just about your student’s wellbeing during this period but your own, and what you did about personal growth and development and the goal of improving oneself and not focussing on the negative. For me it was the perfect time to focus on what I needed to change........ Being a morbidly obese person and weighing in at 155.58kg (24.5stone,

343lbs), BMI 48 and suffered Sleep apnea it was time to put a plan into action and finally once and for all get rid of my weight. May 2020, the weather in the United Kingdom was perfect not a cloud insight and the sun shone giving us all a little lift. I had decided it was time to start losing weight with the tried and tested method of fasting and as I had experienced great results previously, I started straight into a 5 day fast no preparation, just went for it, black coffee, water and nothing else. This 1st Fast started the 17th May Sunday night at 8:30pm and I would break my fast 23rd May Saturday morning at 8:30am. The following week a friend, colleague and private

student of mine Sifu Chris Lloyd asked if I’d like to join him on doing a 12 week challenge it could be anything but if you failed the challenge, there was a forfeit. The forfeit wasn’t going to be pretty, we had decided that we would streak naked through our town centres, to be honest I didn’t want to fail nor could I afford to fail, if you had known me back then it wouldn’t have been a pretty sight not saying that it would be now just way less fat.

The Benefits of fasting • Boost cognitive performance • Protect from obesity and associated chronic diseases, heart disease diabetes joint problems and more • Reduce inflammation • Improve overall fitness • Support weight loss • Decrease the risk of metabolic diseases • Reduce risks of cancer and helping cancer patients — A recent study with mice and cancer showed that fasting during chemotherapy jump-starts the immune system and exposes the cancer cells. Ridding the body of old, toxic cells and replacing with new, healthy ones, may be just the answer. Traditionally, cancer patients have been told to increase nutrients and caloric intake while undergoing chemotherapy treatments, but this approach might now be under review. If you are interested in trying fasting, please consult your doctor. So, the challenge was to fast for 5 days or 132 hours and then over the weekend have 4 meals and enjoy the company of my family while eating. These meals could be whatever I fancied as long as it was fresh, clean and lean what a great reason to buy loads of steak and chicken. It worked out that over 132 hours I lost 18lbs (just over 8kg) in a week before refuelling, so 12 weeks of fasting roughly worked out as 216lbs of body fat gone, going from previous results I had recorded from previous 5 day fasts I had completed before prior to this. The challenge was set, now it was time to see what results I could achieve before taking those 1st steps back to leading a somewhat normal life. The First steps to change had begun. On this journey there was one thing that at the time of starting I hadn’t considered was how this would affect my Wing Chun and what I would have to focus on to deal with such dramatic changes going from a Heavy weight to Feather weight fighter in a matter of a year considering how

long it takes to train the muscle memory. On the flipside, it also allowed me to have two perspective views of one art. The before and after viewpoint, my starting weight 155.58kg (24.5stone, 343lbs), BMI 48 and the end goal. My first week completed successfully, as mentioned before black coffee water and a good dose of will power and my Wing Chun, during the week I stayed very active 10,500 steps daily and teaching Wing Chun Online. I had lost 8.2kg (148.02kg) of body weight and broke my fast with a bone broth (homemade) this was a great way to break the fast simply because it helps put back the minerals and certain

vitamins the body had lost and helps wake the stomach up after it’s couple of days of rest. When reintroducing food back in to the body you find that the best way is to chew it more than you normally would, thus making the process of digestion a little easier to cope with, make sure to still drink plenty of water and this will help the digestion of food and take away some of those feelings of wanting to eat more directly after your first meal. I must admit I did struggle to stick to 4 meals over the weekend and decided to monitor my food intake making sure I weighed myself because this again will help to focus. All

these little steps help towards achieving my fasting challenge. For exercise during my fasting week, cycling 10-12 miles every other day, walking and some body weight exercises which were performed throughout the online lessons and once the gyms and swimming pools opened, I would add time in here and look to replace the cycling as the weather in the UK is not always pleasant. By the way the 1st week fast did have some ups and downs food cravings, I found just telling myself that ‘’no you have to do this’’ and jumping on the scales also helped with the food cravings, I also drank sparkling water with Apple cider vinegar to help suppress the food cravings and the best thing I found was changing the words I used to help control the hunger thoughts and learned to deal with this by watching loads of videos on different recipes for loads of super healthy meals, sounds strange but it was that step, planning my weekend meals. After my 1st 2 days of refuelling my starting weight was 152.58kg so I gained just over 4kg of weight (undigested food, water). I had also found it really hard to stick to eating those 4 meals and still struggle to this day. By the time the 12 weeks had been achieved I found myself down to 114.3kg (17:13st 251.9lbs). In twelve weeks, I had

lost 38.28Kg I was impressed in what I had achieved which motivated me even more to carry this journey on. My Wing Chun teaching online helped as I could now visually and physically see and feel the changes in myself which kept me motivated to keep going and the little bit of recording my weight at least 4 times a day so I could see the weight falling of my body. Coming to the end of October I had finally reached 16st and I was so happy in my mind at reaching this massive mile stone, it was a loss of 8st in 5 months which worked out to be 1.6st a month. Those around me couldn’t believe what I had achieved and how I had gone about losing the weight. I had decided it was time to visit the Doctors just to make sure that my body was still coping with this fasting routine and to my surprise everything was fine except for the white blood cell count was now higher than the red blood cell count. As we moved into November, I began to find it really hard to get fasting again and it wasn’t for the want of trying. I would start the same as usual Sunday night start my fast wake up Monday morning and break it and this kept on happening maybe it was due to my body always programmed to eat a lot more food during the colder months. Every week I would start a fast and break it. This carried on right up until the

New Year and after gaining 2.5st I was back to being 18.5st. I had decided that I needed to get back on track and carrying on pushing to reach my goal. After seeing how much weight I had lost I decided to see how much weight I could carry on losing and not stop until I had reached a BMI of 24 which is considered normal, I now set my goal to 81kg (12.75st, 178.57lbs). The first full week of January was nearly upon us and that Sunday night I started again low-n-behold Monday came and went I didn’t break I went straight through until the following Saturday morning. This time my challenge was to curb what I ate at the weekend as this was the problem area, I had previously struggled with the most, as weird as it sounds the fasting part was easy the re-feed was still causing me issues. This is where my discipline

was struggling and this kept on happening every weekend, I would still be losing that 16-18kg a week but putting 90% of it back on, this went on until the end of February and I was getting a little annoyed with myself so I decided to shake thing up a little and try extending my fast from 5 days (132 hours) to 12.65 days of fasting.

The 12 day fast As my eating and Fasting was beginning to plateau, I decided to try a longer fast and see if I could add an extra 7 days with the goal of breaking my little cycle and put me back on track, I had decided to cut back on the exercise and only do the exercises from the online lessons I was still teaching so as to help me extend the fasting window.

Everything was going well I felt good until the day before breaking my fast I was training wing chun in my little support bubble, I just dropped to the ground as the energy levels had become so depleted, after a little rest I went back home and carried on my fast I was so close to completing and I wanted to succeed. The following morning came I woke, taught 3 online lessons and then decided to break my fast, in total I had gone for a total of 301hrs and lost a staggering 16kg (35lbs, 2.5st). During this time, I formed my own little community out of my student base who had been impressed with how well I was doing and wanted to lose their Lockdown weight and would give Intermittent fasting a go this of cause helped me stick to the 12 day fast and showed them that what they could achieve with the power of fasting. In regards to my health as can be expected everything is beginning to become easier and due to the lost of weight sleep apnea had been cured no more snoring for me. The changes I have had to make to my wing chun has given me a greater understanding of structure within my own system and as I mentioned at the beginning of this gave me the insight of power, strength and force within my own forms. On this journey there was one thing that at the time of starting I hadn’t considered, how would this affect my Wing Chun, and what I had to focus on to deal with such dramatic changes going from

In conclusion, this one-year observational study demonstrates the safety of a periodic Buchinger fast of between 4 and 21 days, as well as its beneficial effects on health and well-being. Periodic fasting led to marked weight loss and improvements in several cardiovascular risk factors, such as overweight, abdominal circumference and blood pressure. It was accompanied by normalization of numerous blood parameters and led to pronounced improvement of the major health complaint in most participants. I’m now almost at an end of my extended fasting routine and as soon as I drop below 75kg my plan is to break my fast refuel my body and then look to become an Intermittent Faster adding an hour a day for eating whatever I want. MY CURRENT WEIGHT AT FINISHING THIS ARTICLE IS 86KG and I have been fasting for a total of 11 months. I have one month to go to lose the last few kgs. I look back over the last year and one thing that holds a lasting and hopefully inspiring words not just for myself but for you and it was this “in less than a year look what I have accomplished. I have gone from being Morbidly Obese to being the lightest I can remember being, what are we going to do next.” Remember anything is possible but what lengths will you go to achieving them. IMBA Lert Rit’s 3 fatal attacks. Siamese Kings’ safety in Ayuddhaya Era was guaranteed by selected groups of soldiers with a sound Muay background. Those strong combatants were commonly called Thanai Luak or Elite Servants and were specifically trained by senior soldiers belonging to the Royal Guard. Their role in defending the King and the Ayuddhaya throne was crucial for the safety of the ancient Siamese Kingdom. In order to accomplish their important task, Thanai Luak soldiers had to be trained specifically in hand to hand combat: in fact, a strict rule prohibited to carry any weapon inside the Royal Palace. Therefore, a Royal guard had to be highly skilled in subduing and often dispatching a would-be aggressor in a blink of an eye. Every elite guardian had to be skilled in specific techniques that, if properly applied, ensured a quick and definitive victory. Modern Muay Lert Rit stylists consider ancient Siamese Elite Soldiers as their “ancestors”: the aggressive defense strategies employed by those close combat specialists are still today a splendid example of fighting efficiency. However, today’s practitioners’ needs are drastically different from those of Ayuddhaya’s Thanai Luak.

Muay Thai modern martial artist may not be interested in protecting a Royal family’s member; nevertheless, being skilled in a few simple and extremely effective barehanded techniques is very useful for today’s Muay Thai practitioners as it was in ancient times. IMBA Muay Lert Rit syllabus is very rich in fighting principles and techniques: among the many combat strategies that a Lert Rit stylist ought to learn and practice on a regular basis, 3 powerful techniques represent a quick way to building a strong close combat background in a relatively short time. These 3 techniques are named in ancient thai jargon: Kamae Kham Sao, Tang Naka and Fad Son Kaen. 1. Heel of the hand blow to the chin Thrust the heel of your hand upward along the opponent's chest to strike him under the chin from below. This will result in a devastating strike, simple and, when executed from a very close distance, almost impossible for the opponent to see or

2. Knee strike to the groin When your opponent has managed to close the gap and forces you to fight from a very short distance (grappling range), you can swing your knee forcefully up aiming to strike the enemy's groin from below. A blow to the testicles is extremely painful and cause immediate loss of strength. Common consequences of a penetrating blow to the testicles are difficulty in breathing and a strong inclination to vomit. Otherwise, from medium range you can thrust your hips powerfully forward and hit with

the knee the opponent’s bladder or the pubic arch of the pelvis. in both cases pain and internal bleeding are the most common result. A strong knee blow to pelvis may damage the pubic symphysis (cartilage) causing a diastasis (separation) of the two halves of the pelvis , crippling the opponent .

• Technical features of the knee strike to the groin Body weapon: front part of the knee joint. By flexing the leg on the thigh, the front part of the knee joint becomes a sort of mace that can impact the target with devastating effectiveness. Energy principle: Thrust the Spear. The forward thrust of the hips is comparable to a lunge with a sharp spear that penetrates the target deeply. Point of attack: the opponent's groin. Possible targets: testicles, bladder, pubic symphysis. Extreme conditioning system (optional): the best tool for extreme knee conditioning is the Heavy Bag.

3. Forearm blow to the side of the neck The side of the neck includes (among others) the carotid artery, the jugular vein and the vagus nerve, all of these are excellent practical self-defence targets. In particular, the vagus nerve is the best choice for diagonal downward blows by the ulnar bone (external forearm bone) or the outer edge of the hand. Accurate strikes to the carotid sinus area in the side of neck can cause the neck muscles to contract and stop the blood flow to the brain. A vagal faint (sudden loss of consciousness as a consequence of a blood pressure drop) is a common result of this kind of attack. In fact, the carotid sinus is a

baroreceptor point, that is a blood pressure regulator, which, through the Vagus Nerve, controls the heartbeat. The reflection of the stroke on the carotid sinus is a reaction that immediately slows the heart-beat, following the perceived increase in pressure on the carotid artery. The consequence is a loss of consciousness with possible convulsions and in extremely serious cases even death.

• Technical features of the forearm blow to the side of the neck Body weapon: ulnar side of the forearm. Alternatively, outside edge of the open hand or closed fist or point of the elbow. Energy principle: the Sledgehammer. Strike diagonally downward using the forearm as if hitting with a large hammer. Point of attack: sides of the neck. Possible targets: the vagus nerve, the carotid artery, the jugular vein. Extreme conditioning system (optional): the best tool for extreme conditioning of the ulnar bone is the Iron Pole. Parenting is Teaching Self-Esteem Vs. Self-Empowerment In the Korean tradition, we believe that all Koreans are related and that we are all a big extended family. In the same token, we as humanity are one family. We are brothers, sisters, uncles, aunts, parents, and grandparents. Coming from a Confucian background, there are specific responsibilities and duties for each member within a family, as a son/daughter, brother/sister, and father/mother. Simply defined, the son/daughter’s main duty in life is to take care of their parents; among brothers and sisters, they must take care of each other; parents must nurture and be responsible for their children, preparing them for adulthood and the world. This is such a simple concept, which establishes order within the family, which then extends to our society, allowing us to thrive as a civilization.

fulfill their responsibilities, then it creates disorder within the group and becomes a burden for the member who was responsible for the individual who disbanded their responsibilities, which then puts extra pressure on the entire group. The question is whether one believes which of the two are more important, the self or the group. The truth is whether you believe in one or the other and live accordingly, the impact, consequences, and results whether positive or negative affects everyone, everywhere globally as we all live in a closed system. What we fail to remember is that in order for the self to thrive, the group must also thrive and in order to

Hwa Rang Do enhance the group, the self must be enhanced. This cycle of cause and effect is inescapable. When an individual improves the self, then the group also benefits. When the group becomes stronger, so does the self. Think for a moment, when a weak or problematic individual comes to the group and the group is able to give support and strengthen the self. The self usually responds by taking all the credit for work done and leaving because they believe it was the self, which was responsible (in other words self-centered). Nevertheless, that person has been strengthened and improved and hopefully will do good within the society without placing extra burden and pressure. However, when a strong person joins the group, they enhance the group by just being themselves and offers their services because they know that they have something they can share and accepts responsibility, whether the end result is good or bad. Furthermore, since they do not rely on the group for his/her selfworth, the individual is less inclined to be disappointed or disillusioned, rather they are more understanding and forgiving. This is the dilemma, what comes first or is more important, the self or the group? The self cannot exist without the group and there would be no group if there were no selves. However, it is easy to assume that the self can exist without the group. This is premature conclusion with limited knowledge and wisdom. In the movie “Castaway” there was one scene, which illustrated this poignantly. Tom Hanks decides to build a raft to escape the deserted island. He puts his friend, a Wilson volleyball, which he has painted a face with his own blood (allegorical) and calls it “Wilson,” on the raft with him. He is caught in a storm and loses the ball. He is on the brink of death, but risks his life to save the volleyball, “Wilson.” Tom almost drowns and cannot recover “Wilson.” He breaks down and cries as though he has lost his most beloved friend. Ultimately, we as human beings we cannot be alone, and we are not meant to be alone as God created both man and woman in his image. No, I do not have any children of my own although I desired to have many, but God had other plans. The practice of Karate Do through the years Already in the year 41 of the Meiji Era, that is, in our 1909, Grand Master Anko Itosu made the following reflection in his teachings: “Your training must be in accord with the qualities of your body. If you train too hard for your aptitude, it isn’t good for you.” Years later, in 1963, another Grand Master in Karate, Chosin Chibana, made the following warning: “You must develop yourself before reaching the age of 50. Your body, as is natural, begins to deteriorate at the age of 50 and you must modify your training. If after 50, you continue to train, you won’t deteriorate too much, but even so, it will happen, and one must adapt to it.” What’s more, in Japan, it is even considered that practice over years and years does not offer the benefits that the Martial Arts look for until the person is truly mature, at an advanced age. Master Jiro Ohtsuka, speaking about his father, the Grand Master and founder of Karate Wado Ryu, told me on one occasion: “In Japan it is said that one arrives at the prime of life very old. One flowers at 80, but what happens to flowers also occurs with us,

that a little after flowering, they die. The Japanese Martial Arts need many years of practice to be grasped. If one practices more than 30 years, then one can get something out of them.” It has always been said that Karate is for life, for always. Logically, the normal physical aging, joined with possible chronic injuries and a long etcetera that the years lived and the years of practice often bring with them, make certain modifications necessary in the way of understanding and practicing Karate. Otherwise, and as happens in many cases, the karateka will think about abandoning his practice when he can’t keep up the desired technical level and a certain comfort within it. According to what all the Grand Masters say, this is a big mistake. The theme that concerns us is not related to that of an instructor teaching and directing his classes only with what he likes or what is best for him in his “stage” along the Karate path. It isn’t that way. One thing is his personal practice and another very different thing is what he must teach in his classes, how he orders his classes, in this case, a complete Karate and directed at all the different levels of the students. The content of this article is based in part on conversations with grand masters from around the world, masters whose worth, experience, and credibility are beyond question. The personalized evolution of practice in the Martial Art Not all training sessions should be the same. Depending on the age of the karateka, on his years of practice and therefore on the phase (on the Karate path) in which he is found, on his grade, and on his personal tastes or objectives in Karate, on possible injuries or physical tasks more or less appreciable, the practice of Karate not only can, but must be different. The contrary, keeping up an unalterable practice, would only lead to incapacity, frustration, and in the end, the abandonment of all training. This is so even in the case of dynamic youngsters, in those where the practice can be very intense, as with elite competitors. From the very

conception of Karate as competition, the training is merely a means to an end: victory. That is, the very training itself ceases being an objective and as a consequence loses its attraction, ceasing to be relaxing or a source of pleasure; the pleasure only comes with an eventual victory. This is not what tradition dictates, rather the opposite; the practice is an end in itself, not a means to reach victory. During training, the pleasure comes as a result of personal growth, overcoming oneself, and of course, from the pleasure derived from the fluid and economical movements. In the training with competitive ends, the advancing of age, the presence of injury, etc., will sooner or later lead to the logical decrease in the successes, so that the continuation of the practice will end up being seen as questionable. This case is highly consistent in the competitive spheres. On the other hand, in the practice of Karate as an Art, time ceases to be a negative factor and even becomes the opposite. Though it is perfectly verifiable that there is a lessening of physical ability, the practice by itself continues to be a source of pleasure and well-being. It can even happen that with age, another level of simplicity and elegance arises in the

movement. Master Kenzo Mabuni, 10th Degree Black Belt (son and heir of the creator of Karate Shito Rhyu, Kenwa Mabuni) expressed the following opinion in this respect: “Of course my personal practice has changed through the years. My birthday is May 30th, 1927 and I won’t ever be 20 years old again. There are changes and alterations in the training methods related to the different ages of the practitioners and with the applications of the instructor. It is as important to understand your body as it is to be able to adapt your private practice to it. All Karate Do practitioners

should practice without literally copying other people, or other styles. It is important for one to personalize one’s techniques in accord with one’s body, in order to be able to gain experience through one’s efforts.” In effect, the quantity of training perhaps diminishes when age, grade and the years of practice increase. On the other hand, the “quality” increases. The percentage of time dedicated to basic technique, to physical preparation, flexibility, combat… are often less important since in that stage practitioners often have less interest in those aspects.

The “superior” practice is often limited practically to the Kata, established techniques for pair work, linked wazas, etc. In sum, some personal, concrete requirements that are based on the most elaborated part of Karate and therefore, perhaps the most beautiful, complete, and attractive. It’s clear that personal tastes have an influence, just as with the adaptation to techniques and work that each one can develop to a certain level. Is it really essential, through the passing of time, whether the shiko dachi is done higher or if one hits with less or more power? It seems to me that this is not the important matter. Careful, that is not to say that one should not consider technical aspects important in youth, that stage has very distinct elements, very different objectives; if at twenty years of age one practices little and poorly, of course at fifty one will be a disaster. It is as

important to accept and develop this stage of maturity as it is to do Karate where the physical is more substantial, as it is in the previous stages. After decades of practice, physical contact begins to be avoided. It is logical that it is so, since the capacity for recovery diminishes greatly with the passing of years. My experience, at 42 years of age, is that any pain due to a strike, any bruise, spasm, or fibril tear takes considerably longer to heal. On the other hand, some facets fill the karateka more than others in the long term. It is often said that when a person begins to practice Karate, he thinks that a punch is only a punch and a kick is only a kick. When the practitioner has been practicing for a while, he realizes that a punch is much more than a punch and that a kick is much more than a kick. But when they have been

practicing Karate for a very long time, a punch again becomes just a punch and a kick again comes to be simply a kick. In effect, it is like that. At the beginning, for the novice, punch and kick have no more meaning. Later on, they realize the great wealth in the details that must accompany the realization of one or another technique, so that the techniques are much more than simple punches and kicks. But that development and improvement of technical details, which must occupy a great part of the life of a karateka, cease to have vital importance when at advanced ages and high levels when other personal values are being development through Karate and another kind of knowledge and other attitudes intervene. That’s how it must be and that’s how it is if one observes the personal attitude and technical aptitude of the grand masters, in whom one can appreciate a “different” technique. This continues being good, but the technique is no longer the obsession and main objective; it becomes a vehicle to get other benefits (mental and spiritual). For that, a punch comes to be only a punch and a kick goes back to being only a kick… They are vehicles for other objectives, they are… “the Path”. It is common to hear from grand masters that Karate is, in reality and at high levels, Zen in movement. Values such as naturalness, serenity, tempering, knowing how to act in all situations (qualities that

technically characterize the very advanced karateka), are superimposed on the technique and give it its ultimate meaning. The final objective of the practice of Karate is to offer the individual a high level of physical and mental tranquility and balance, which are indispensable factors in how we understand happiness. Is this not the ultimate and main objective of a person? Master Hironori Ohtsuka always put great emphasis on these aspects of Karate, understanding that balance and mental peace are the true objectives that the student tries to develop. These virtues are not reached through a stronger, more flexible technique, or from a lower posture, etc., nor do they come from money. The Karate master Tsutomu Oshima, one of the few living legends of Karate, confirms: “There is no connection between money and happiness. In this society, a millionaire is considered happy by way of success. Someone who doesn’t have money is considered unhappy. For that, I say to young people that we can’t judge the value of someone for either having a lot or having a little.” It is important to accept physical aging and that the karateka will have as a reward a more natural, simple, more elegant technique, one based on knowing how to act in all situations, and on a deep control that comes with experience. Another grand master, recently deceased, Teruo Hayashi, expressed the following opinion on this matter:

“Of course one loses speed and strength in the techniques, but you can compensate with greater experience and with the knowledge that is derived from it through the real and mental aspects of the techniques. You must concentrate on developing what I call the “fighting soul”. Yet, there is no other way but to pass through the basic school of technical learning. In order to understand this, there are some things that all practitioners have to

comprehend. Your body changes and your Karate changes with your body. You get softer as you get older. Some young practitioners don’t understand that the Karate of anybody else has to be different, must be different according to the age of the karateka. It would be stupid for a 50-year old practitioner to try to maintain the same type of Karate that he did when he was 25. It goes against nature, it goes against common sense. Let’s take the example of the

beginning of the kime. It takes longer for a young practitioner to assimilate the correct kime in a physical movement. For an older and more experienced karateka, the moment of the kime is truly shortened. Some techniques can be very effective for young people, but they would be impossible for a practitioner in old age. There are other kinds of techniques that the karateka must truly try to acquire when getting older. Many people ask me if I have changed my Karate. Well, sometimes the question leads to confusion and I have to be very careful with my answer. I have changed my Karate because I myself have changed, as much physically as mentally. I have more experience now that 20 years ago and I have a different perspective of things. For that, I have to say that, yes, I have changed and those changes have definitively affected the Art that I teach. On the other hand, I don’t teach Karate to please the student. I teach in a way that I think it must be taught. But as an instructor, I need to find better ways of communicating and transmitting my knowledge, depending on who I am teaching at the moment. The students have different past experiences, different levels of understanding, of education,… and one must adapt oneself to them.”

The inappropriate exaggeration of the gesture During the first years of practice, principally in youth, Karate techniques tend to be done in a spectacular fashion, with lower positions, stronger techniques, and even with more risky throws. Of course, all that shouldn’t pass the margins of correct technique in each school, tradition, etc. The search for the spectacular and the aesthetic form a part of Karate in so far as it is an Art, and as such, it also seeks beauty of expression. But we mustn’t forget that this is not its principle objective or motive. The naturalness and the possibility of doing it during one’s whole life were for the father of Karate, Guichin Funakoshi, one of the Golden Rules of the Art. The practical application of the movements and Kata in the Bunkai is undoubtedly another limitation of flowery aesthetics that one must fully assimilate. The techniques do not need exaggeration in their realization. Observing the photographs and videos of grand masters from the very origins of Karate, we find their techniques very distinct from the current ones. This difference is especially

noticeable in the masters from Okinawa, such as Seikichi Odo. Relaxation and fluidity acquire naturalness as opposed to agitation and tension. The very way of doing Karate exhibitions has changed. Before, the spectacular nature of the techniques was primary in the eyes of the lay spectators. These days, the big demonstrations concentrate on the techniques of precision, naturalness, control (technical and situational); they often also offer an added value, more related to historic or philosophical aspects that demonstrate that Karate is much more than a sport. The technical exaggeration, the distortion of the movement, is especially present in high-level competition. For that, these words coming from an expert in the matter acquire even more importance. This is what Tsuguo Sakumoto has to say, 8th Degree Black Belt and World Kata Champion various times: “Technically, competition is deviating from the essence of Karate as a consequence of the exaggeration of the movements. As far as teaching goes, the training should focus more on understanding, sincerity, and modesty toward the adversary. I believe that the current obsession to seek the external aspects of our Art is not good for Karate, such as the obsession with technical execution, whose only attractive element resides in the spectacular, showy nature of it. In my point of view, we must return again to the traditional essence and study the cultural and spiritual values of Karate.”

Another important Karate master, Minobu Miki, 8th Degree Black Belt, has very clear ideas on this theme and expresses them in the following way: “There is much lack of knowledge of every Kata and its characteristics. The competition judges normally give points more for the appearance of what is done and the aesthetic aspects, and they ignore other, much more important ones, which are perfectly inscribed and defined in the traditions and methodologies of the traditional styles. The judges tend to give higher scores to those who execute the movements with greater strength and concentration, but what happens is that often, the original Kata doesn’t precisely require that kind of excessive strength or concentration. There are clear limitations to what the judges can and can not score. A Kata doesn’t have to be spectacular, but these days, in competition, it has to appear so if one wants to achieve something. There is too much emphasis on the aesthetic. There is a tendency to emphasize the forms. The general style is softer, the rhythm of the breathing sometimes has nothing to do with the meaning of the technique and all of that is very bad. The rhythm of the movements has been altered so that the judges and the audience perceive the physical action better and with that, the harmony and balance of the forms is inevitably lost.” Minobu Miki, surely the most well-known student of Kenzo Mabuni, the heir of the Shito Ryu tradition, has been a high-level official of the World Karate Federation, which

makes his opinion even more founded. In this respect, Master Miki adds: “A Kata must not be too fast or too slow. Some parts must be fast and perhaps others slow, and all that must happen in accord with the application of the movements. The judges must see a fighter and also an artist. The modern derivatives of the old Kata are more concerned with external appearance than the meaning of what lies behind. The interpretation of the Kata is something personal, but the Kata must be good, balanced; that is positive for the mind and body. The Kata is Zen in movement and as such it can be learned and understood in steps and at various levels. On the other hand, I firmly believe that Kata techniques must be incorporated into training at very early stages of learning. But I also understand the critics of the Kata when I see the explanation of some bunais truly impossible. However, for one who understands the Art of Karate, the Kata is Kumite. I think that the person who seriously considers the Karate Kata, can say in all truth that he is studying this Art.”

SU-HA-RI. The adaptation of Karate to the individual The Su-Ha-Ri is an advanced concept in Karate. It deals with the culmination of the learning, study, and adaptation of the practice and the technical forms to one’s very being. These stages cannot be described a priori, nor are they equal from one to another. This is about a personal experience with Karate, the fruit of a selection of techniques and practices that physically and mentally allow one to adapt the Art to oneself. These adaptations fill the practitioner, make him feel good, balanced, sure of himself, efficient, and especially, able to enjoy the practice… All that, without taking away from one’s technical level. This adaptation does not mean to move away from the technical line of one’s master, of his school, or style, rather it is about little details that allow one to adapt the technique to oneself. This adaptation is frequently based more on a selection of techniques than on a transformation of them.

I believe that no one can understand the greatness of Karate until they have spent many, many, many years in the practice. As is the case in nearly everything, one must be at a certain age, since only after having passed through certain vicissitudes proper of the whole process, especially the harder ones, like injuries, pain, disillusionment, etc., can one formulate a more complete idea about the true meaning. All of that allows the follower to make the necessary adaptations in his experience and practice of Karate. Such adaptation, the search for the possibilities in each one, is also part of Su-Ha-Ri. As important as Su-Ha-Ri is another Karate Do principle, what we call KiShin-Tai, which refers to the three levels of practice and development in Karate: Spiritual, Mental, and Physical. For Grand Master Minobu Miki, it is explained like this: “At the beginning, the physical part of Karate, but later, the mental part takes on more importance.” Perhaps all of these concepts are better understood in the country of origin, Japan. There, the way of being of the inhabitants, their culture and tradition, even their religions, surely make these kinds of concepts more comprehensible. Despite that, if we want to practice a complete Karate, with all its ingredients and cultural, historic, and philosophical wealth, we must attend to these principles, wherever we live. As Master Hirokazu Kanazawa says: “It isn’t necessary to go to Japan to learn Karate deeply, but such an experience helps one to comprehend and to live the spirit of the Art, to feel its spiritual essence.” What is certain is that in Japan this intimate practice is upheld more and better, having no greater goal than to enjoy the practice and without special concern for external aspects. Thirteen million people practice Karate around the world, according to Takaichi Mano, a high-level official of the Japanese Federation and master of Karate Wado Kai. But all toll, with the people who practice in other organizations, the number approaches 40 million. Each one looks for something different and Karate must be capable of giving each one what he or she is seeking. Karate, contrary to what some believe, is not something rigid or immobile. With all respect, whoever believes that doesn’t know Karate deeply. The changes and selection of techniques or forms are done by the karateka in an extremely slow way, almost without even realizing it. The Su-Ha-Ri is a process of adaptation within the margins that the Martial Art, the style, and even the master have established. For that, Su-Ha-Ri doesn’t go against the purity of the style, rather in favor of the individual, where there is mutual adaptation, a kind of balance, a middle way between what I must do and what I can and want to do. Going outside of these boundaries would mean that you no longer practice Karate but something else, outside the history, tradition, and values that lie behind this Martial Art known around the world.

In the same way that many weapons have been developed to provide advantages in combat, the human body has also improved the ways of using its natural weapons, that is, its structural components head, trunk and limbs, for the purpose of attack and defense. In Japan, empty hand combat techniques have become so effective that they have been studied and applied against any type of opponent, whether armed or not. The study of angles, tractions, impacts and levers, as well as the damages they could cause were was so deep that unarmed arts achieved the same advantages as an opponent with the most dangerous weapons. Torite (“Hand that grabs”) is the art of defeating and capturing an opponent with your own hands, the part of JuJutsu employed by the police at different periods in Japan until World War II. An Art that seeks effectiveness to arrest a person, always looking to nullify from the start the opponent’s ability to attack, through a complete arsenal of techniques with empty hands and weapons, and a whole structure of arrests with ropes and sticks to facilitate the actions of the other companions.
