Okichitaw is an indigenous martial art based on the fighting methods of the warriors of the Assiniboine and Plains Cree Indian nations. However, the current training method is more intended in giving direction and focus to the student through self-challenge and confrontation of own fears and limitations in a controlled environment, while developing physical and mental strength. Okichitaw uses the practitioner's full body mechanics to deliver the maximum amount of impact on the opponent. This action is used in conjunction with one's own body weight to perform aggressive attacks and takedowns. Jumping, rolling, and hopping are used to initiate and end attacks. Due to the variety of techniques and skills, and the strenuous nature of the exercises, Okichitaw demands and generates a high level of athletic capabilities, strength, speed, agility, commitment to technique, and mind alertness. In this first work, Chief George J. Lepine, responsible for adapting the Art to current times, shows us the traditional method of solo training, availing ourselves of what Nature offers us. Only in the here and now do we fully exist, but we cannot ignore any of the strings of our mutable being, those we leave or take along the way. Just as in the biological realm, in life we eat, digest, absorb the necessary and expel the expendable. Events, facts, people and characters will necessarily follow one another in that process which is living. With greater or lesser fortune, with greater or lesser wisdom, we face the complications of destiny, we go through its many crossroads, we sow in our walk and, in one way or another, we end up collecting the sown. The Art of Living is an eternal restart, which is the same as saying that, since everything is seen in its opposite, the Art of Living exists with all its intensity in the idea and in the act of dying. Dying constantly to what we are, to become what we are not. The command seems clear to the wise: Forward, upward, inward and, finally ... toward the Whole! Entering, restarting, always possesses the tasty impetus and the push of the dream; it's flowing in favor of the stream. The really difficult thing is to know how

to get out, because going out is finishing, is dying to that; and it's precisely there, before the grim reaper in any of its forms, where we measure up or not. Restarting with no other worries than the natural ones, those of knowing, with sovereign certainty, that time, in its passing, slowly finishes us. Much better than me, great Master CalderĂłn de la Barca said: "What is life? A frenzy. What is life? An illusion, a shadow, a fiction, and the greatest good is small for our whole life is a dream, and dreams are just dreams."

Today we bring on our cover a regular columnist for this magazine, an outstanding Master of the Russian Martial Art known as â€œSystemaâ€?, a style that is arousing so much interest in fans. A great Martial Master, no doubt, but above all an intelligent and sensitive man, who with his kind and gentle treatment quickly won our hearts from our first meeting. We have regularly translated his book into these pages, and today we wanted to bring you this interview as well, which brings us closer to his knowledge and personality in a different way. What is martial art to you? First of all, it is a complex of factors and actions characteristic of a person living in the material, spiritual and mental worlds. And at all levels, we must be harmonious. Only then will we feel and act successfully. Let's conditionally divide these concepts: Movement. Music. Art. What unites them is "composition" and "improvisation". First of all, it is training and correction of psychological balance. No matter what kind of martial art we do, we always solve many problems to move forward. First of all, it is the ability to find communication in society. Making decisions and achieving goals. Education of the Spirit and will. Ability to be compassionate and at the same time firm in making decisions. In general, martial art is a model of our life, in which there is an opportunity to model and find new solutions for everyday life!

How long does it take for martial arts, music and visual arts? If we take everything as 100%, then 50% is martial art, 40% is music, 10% is painting, drawing. Russian martial art is my main source of income and study. Music. As a hobby. I play the piano, guitars (acoustic guitar, electric guitar). I write my own music. I paint in my free time when inspiration comes! Oil on canvas. For me, it's self-expression and creation! This is what is called freedom. Man is free in his creativity! Expressing yourself is spiritual growth. Painting is imagery, one of the highest qualities, striving for the Spirit. Music is a spiritual, emotional quality without which a person cannot live. Martial art or physical movement, it is more a material environment. This is our real manifestation in this world. These are our feelings and instincts in the first place. This is what has to do with our safety and survival. But when we bring painting and music into the martial art, we are already reaching the level of life, not survival. This is a new quality of life. This is a volumetric perception of life! This is the concept of our school "Sibirskiy Viun", Systema SV.

Systema SV Your education? First higher education: teacher of fine arts, and second higher education: trainer-teacher of physical education and sports. I am also engaged in health-improving practices, I am a member of the Association of Visceral Therapists in Russia. Founder and creator of the direction "Biological 3D Set up".

What does "Biological 3D Set up"? This is a comprehensive self-healing system aimed at correction after a certain diagnosis of the body and the psychological state of a person. "Bio 3D Set up" consists of two stages. 1.Set up - enable. 2.Tune up - tuning.

We work with a physical body, with a certain 3D gymnastics. In fact, it is necessary to use some aspect of gymnastics and body activities:

1. 3D gymnastics. Special 3D acrobatics - rolling, overturning, twisting, somersault, combinations of various elements on a hard floor. Exercises using various equipment: balls, balls, sticks. Prevention of motor functions of the spine. Natural massage of internal organs. Pair interaction, group interaction. The use of 3D movements and an increase in freedom of movement in the body expands the volume of perception of consciousness. 2. Vibration gymnastics. Systema SV 5. Stretching. Stretching - stretching, stretching, lengthening, stretching, tension, elasticity, extensibility. It is very useful for the harmonious development of the body. What is the purpose of your education in school and center? Education and adequate perception of the world are important. This is currently a very difficult task. People are focused on big ambitions without investing a lot of work and labor. Many people want an instant result, but this is impossible! We start at a young age, the smallest 4 years old. There are our students all over the world and we are proud of it! First of all, we care about the correction and prevention of the health of our students. But of course we give them good and deep Russian hand-to-hand combat techniques. It is an integral part and the largest to learn. The technical and tactical elements are very diverse, they are based on certain principles and laws. Yes, we have a good methodological base. For over 30 years we have made it perfect. This method is used all over the world, in our branches. Even our competitors are trying to tear off parts of it for themselves.

What is the fundamental difference between Russian martial arts and other martial arts? Our martial art is very similar to all existing martial arts in the world. But still, it has some difference. The first is an impeccable knowledge of biomechanics and the psyche of the human body. Second: Since I already talked about music and improvisation, this is exactly it. Improvisation with knowledge of the laws of biomechanics and the human reaction to certain movements in space. The ability not to perform a memorized technique, but to act on the basis of a given situation, is success in battle. Everything changes around very quickly - speed, distance, strength. All these factors can be taken into account automatically when there is a certain level of fitness. The third is special training methods. Of course, we include in them the usual known methods, but also the specific ones that our ancestors used. Therefore, we honor our tradition and identity in this world.

The Code of Honor in Martial Arts The Code of Honor in Martial Arts The code of honor is based on the assumption that honor is the most valuable characteristic of every person. Honor is the external face of a dignified human being. The right to a person's dignity is one of the basic human rights and equally belongs to every man, no matter his or her age, sex, class, race etc. Honor (lat. honos, gloria) is an abstract term which signifies the feelings of worth and respect which, in turn, affects the social position and selfevaluation of an individual or family, society, military or military unit, country etc. So, to those individuals or their families, certain social communities, military or military units, military or civil schools, certain groups of people, countries etc. a value or reputation in society is assigned in line with how they perform certain tasks defined by the code of honor, as well as the moral code of the community as a whole. As early as some martial arts were created, no matter the country of their origin, a certain code of honor was deeply rooted in their basic moral principles. Accepting that code of honor, an individual would accept certain standards of behavior, as well as the ideals of the character that was necessary for a member of such a group of people, i.e. that kind of people that took up a certain martial art. And so, in different historical periods, codes of honor were made in different countries across the world. Many of those codes of honor became widely known. In Ancient Greece, the Spartans had their code of honor, and numerous others belonged to certain Roman legions, Alexander The Great's units, Genghis Khan's soldiers, and many more. One of the most famous codes of honor is surely the Japanese code of honor named "Bushidoâ€? to which many Japanese warriors, samurais, abided by. Although this Japanese code of honor is the most famous one, many others are also very well-known and we will mention some of them.

The Code of Honor in Martial Arts ne of the older codes of honor is the famous French code of the warrior class – Noblesse Oblige (nobility obliges, requirements set for knights) which was followed by knights as early as the 13th century. The German code of honor called Gemut is also well-known and it is said to be followed by the German knighthood during the Middle Ages. One of the most famous one is definitely the English Gentleman's Code and the French Gentilhomme which were mostly military and patrician codes of honor that appeared around the 16th century. One of the more popular knight codes of honor is the Italian code called Cavalleria. Knightly codes of honor bore similar names- Codigo de Caballero an, sometime later, Honor de Cavalleria which was widespread in Spain. During the Middle Ages, in some midEuropean countries the code of honor called Fidei et Honoris (a certain type of code of model behaviour and appropriate conduct) was used. In its basis, it respected the principle of integrity and honor. Those were all codes consisting of moral principles to which knights of various European countries needed to abide by. Certain rules of behavior, i.e. codes of honor existed in the 18th and 19th century. One of them was, for example, the German code of officers' behavior called the Grey Book which regulated the rules of behavior in sword or gun duels. France was a country known for its duels based on insulting a man's honor. The famous commander Napoleon Bonaparte founded the French order of merit, Legion of Honour, as one of the first orders of such kind. During the 19th and 20th century, unwritten codes of honor existed in the American Wild West and its population lived in line with them. Those codes were known as The Cowboy Code or The Code of the West. It is less known that one of the strictest codes of honor was implemented by pirates in the 17th and 18th century. It was called the Code of the Brothers of the Shore. In 1889 in America, the ethical code of honor for vagrants was established – The Hobo Ethical Code. It became famous because of certain symbols that the vagrants used. Some criminal groups have also made their codes of honor popular, for example, the Chinese Triads have their own code, and the Japanese Jakuza have a different one. It is known among the Jakuza that, if an dishonorable actions was made, they will chop off your pinky finger. One of the most famous codes in the world is the one followed by the Italian mafia. They have their own basic code of behavior called the Cosa Nostra (engl. our thing, our way) and the code itself is known as Omerta. Many abovementioned codes of honor were followed in Europe and they had a very strong influence in martial arts trainees, for example, on wrestlers, fencers and boxers. Naturally, Eastern martial arts, especially Japanese martial arts, were greatly influenced by the Japanese code of honor - Bushido.

“A true master and teacher of a martial art will accept his student as someone who is a part of his family. By doing that, he will teach him the same thing he has learned from his father or teacher – to respect the unwritten rules of the code of honor. Moreover, he will show him with his own example how to live by respecting the moral principles of the code of honor.”

Bushido – The Code of Honor Bushido (bu – shi- do; bu= strong, strength; bushi = warrior; do= path, way) or the warrior's path (the path of the samurai) was an unwritten code of basic moral principles of the warrior class in Japan. Although the value system contained in the bushido code changed under various influences through the entire Japanese feudal period, its essence remained unchanged. Righteousness, honesty, bravery, kindness, honor and modesty were always pointed out as the most important virtues of every perfect warrior. A special emphasis was given to the feeling of contempt towards death, whereas loyalty to your family, country and master (ruler) represented the highest samurai obligation. The samurai class appeared as an important power during the Heian period (794 – 1185 A.D.) and it was made up of representatives of the warrior classbuke. They gradually became the court's official bodyguards. The name "samurai” was given to them from the word "samurau” which means "to serve, follow”. In the beginning, the name referred only to the soldiers who served their duty in the emperor's palace. Later it signified all members of the warrior class. Their way of life differed quite a lot from the lives of other members of the court's aristocracy. Because of frequent wars during the Kamakura (1192 – 1333 A.D.) and Ashikaga/ Muromachi (1338 – 1573 A.D.) period, cultivation of warrior skills and constant appraisal of bravery on the battlefield was demanded from them. Indifference towards death was taken over from Zen Buddhism once it was discovered that discarding life as an object of worship can offer a lot to the warrior. Buddhism brought the faith to the permanence of fate, compliance with

the unavoidable as well as the brave stillness in from of danger. Honor was extremely appreciated, however, under the influence of Shintoism (an authentic Japanese religion), warriors gave a lot of importance to the origin and reputation of their families. Making a simple mistake or losing honor led to the highest readiness to sacrifice oneself- the obligation to commit suicide (seppuku). It includes ritually cutting open one's intestines (hara-kiri). This way of committing suicide is based on an old Japanese anatomical belief according to which the point just above the navel (Jap. Hara) is the centre of a person's soul and feelings. The basic guiding force for committing seppuku was "I will open up the place where my soul resides and show what it's like. You can see for yourself if it is corrupt or pure.â€? The warrior class's lear ning programme was mostly based on the following skills: fencing, archery, riding skills, the usage of a spear, war tactics, calligraphy, ethics, literature, history and, especially, mastering and practicing ju jutsu or the javara skill. As a martial art, ju jutsu was especially valued because, in comparison to wrestling, it wasn't based on physical strength and it differed from other attacking techniques because it didn't involve weapons. The bushido code was respected throughout the entire training and, straight from the beginning, it was a basic lear ning component in all martial arts that the warriors had to pass. Although it was written down, its unwritten rules were respected and followed. In the was that martial arts developed through history, the knowledge about certain martial arts was passed on from one teacher to their students, i.e. from one generation to the other. Naturally, each martial arts master passed the unwritten code of honor rules to his students as well.

The Mode of Practicing and the Code of Honor – Jutsu or Do The fighting techniques that were used by warriors in feudal Japan are called "Bugei”. According to some martial arts experts, the majority of those basic techniques was developed in feudal times and there are around 40 of them. Those fighting techniques, Bugei, were practiced in war and that was their basic characteristic and usage. In other words, Bugei were warrior techniques in Old Japan. Individual warrior techniques of the Bugei use the word "Jutsu” (skill, artistry) and, because of their basic use, respecting the Bushido code was implied and encouraged in war periods. The well- known martial arts master Jigoro Kano (1860 – 1938) practiced a number of different styles, i.e. schools of Jutsu during his youth. When he became an instructor (teacher), he saw that his school's name didn't quite differ from other schools that were active at that time. He thought about it and in 1898 come up with the idea to call his style "Judo”. Master Kano wanted to use the name to preserve a certain traditional term, for example, Budo or Bushido, but still to avoid the skill from having its basic warrior purpose and the title "Jutsu”. Within this new name, the Judo martial art encompassed the mode of training and fighting principle which, in turn, decreased its basic purpose of a warrior skill and the need to strictly adhere to the Bushido code of honor. This way master Kano could propagate the style to different profiles and professions and, at the same time, avoid the Judo style of fighting to be used solely for the purposes of the army or the police. This is how, Judo was gradually developed from the Ju-Jutsu warrior skill (ju=tenderly, do= path or way). It is a mode of training of certain techniques and principles of fighting which grew step by step and changed its purpose. Today, it is mainly a sport. Seeing that the Judo martial art has a successful developmental

path, some other famous martial arts masters took on the same principle. The well-known martial arts master and the founder of the Karate martial art, Gichin Funakoshi (1868 – 1957), called his style Karate-Jutsu as early as 1926. Ten years later, in 1936, he changed it to Karate-Do. Today, this martial arts is turning more and more into a sport and it is usually called just Karate. Another great martial arts master, Morihei Ueshiba (1883 – 1969) who, during his youth, trained different forms of the Jutsu skills, in its very beginning called his style Aiki-ryu or Aiki-Jutsu. At the end of 1942, he changed its name to Aikido which is a term that almost everyone knows today. The name became popular in the beginning of 1948. As soon as World War II was over, Japan faced many changes at the time, many of which affected martial arts. Many martial arts masters served as instructors to various officers in the Japanese military during the war or were members of the army themselves. Because of that, once the war was over, they wanted to show the world their peaceful viewpoints and not the warrior purpose of their martial arts techniques. This is why they propagated the "Do” way of practicing martial arts and, so, gradually decreasing their innitial purpose and meaning of being a warrior skill. Also, they gradually diminished the effect that the Bushido code of honor had on martial arts. Finally, the Jutsu style was more and more replaced by the Do mode of practicing. Many martial arts progressively changed their basic warrior purpose, i.e. the way they have approached training. Another change was made to their names, for example, Ken Jutsu= Kendo; Iai Jutsu=Iaido; So Jutsu=Sodo; Kyu Jutsu=Kyudo; Jo Jutsu= Jodo etc. Even some different modes of fighting with weapons in Okinawa gradually changed their names to "Kobudo”. That kind of "Do” way of practice was accepted by many Korean martial arts, such as Hap Ki Do, Hwa Rang Do, Han Mu Do, Kumdo, Tang Soo Do and, certainly the most famous one, Tae Kwon Do. Even the famous martial arts master and actor Bruce Lee picked the name Jeet Kune Do for his own style of fighting. The modes of practicing according to the Do principle were accepted by some other martial arts around the world. An example is the Vietnamese Viet Vo Dao or Quan Ki Do, Defendo or Wen-Do in Canada or Zen Do Kan in Australia. The effect is also visible on the Indonesian Sindo as well as the Burmese Bando boxing.

The Code of Honor in the Modern Era Whether some martial arts masters would like to admit it or not, today the Do mode, i.e. the Do way of practicing martial arts and its understanding is shifted towards sports and sports results than to the original martial art itself. It is even less pointed towards the warrior skill from which it originated. The code of honor is seldom mentioned because today's sports have their own set of rules and fair play. And for the gross majority of sportspersons, that is enough. However, there are some smaller groups of masters that exist today which still respect and accept some of the rules of the Bushido code of honor. Certain "trueâ€? martial arts masters still live in the East or in the West today and they respect and abide by some of the life rules from that code of honor. For those specific martial arts masters taking up a certain martial art is not merely a hobby or something they do in their free time. For them, it is not a sport and they do not practice it from a sports point of view. For them, it is strictly a martial art. Although some martial arts masters turn to it professionally, taking up the skill is not something they consider to be their main occupation. It represents a certain way of life which includes respecting the moral principles of certain codes of honor. So, today in the West, you are able to come across martial arts masters which will tell you that the martial art of boxing is a noble skill. Some other martial arts masters will say that the martial art of wrestling or fencing are skills that are taken up by gentlemen who respect the code of honor. Although the era of samurai has long passed, in today's Japan you can still find martial arts masters who live by respecting the principles of the Bushido code of honor. Nowadays, there are more people who think that the time of knights and samurai is over. There are those who believe that, in modern martial arts, and especially in martial sports, there is no longer a need or space for some of the codes of honor because they have their own rules and fair play. However, there still exists a number of martial arts masters who do not agree with that notion. Those masters are loyal to the old way of learning a certain martial art which says that, if someone doesn't respect those unwritten rules and that specific code of honor, he will not be respected himself by the other masters of that skill. No matter the country of origin of a certain martial art or a code of honor's

name which is cultivated there, the basic priciples of those codes of honor are almost identical in the East and in the West. The person who practices it or a trainer or instructor who doesn't live according to the moral principles of that code of honor is not and never will be the true master of that martial art. Ancient samurai differed from other people of that time firstly because of the fact that they lived according to the Bushido code of honor. Today, when you ask a random officer who graduated from the famous military school, West Point, how does he differ from other people, his answer will always be – "by a certian code of honor”. Those who think that the basic difference between exeptional martial arts masters is in the color or the way they wear a kimono, in the amblems on their kimonos or sports t-shirts, in the color of their belt or their title, in their great knowledge or performance of a certain technique, are wrong. When you ask today's martial arts masters what is the basic thing that makes them different from other people or some other individuals who train martial arts, their answer will always be the same – "by the fact that we live in respect of the moral priciples of the code of honor.” Bushido, noblesse oblige, the chivalry code, the gentleman's code, gemut, cavalleria, the cowboy code are for most people just some old names of certain customs from ancient history. For them, they are customs that they've heard of from old legends and tales about knights or samurai. Those customs were never written down or even clearly prescribed, but their rules are merely living in various historical legends. For some other people those are still unwritten rules of behavior. Their basic moral principles according to which they live. Those are unwritten rules by which their fathers and their fathers' fathers abided by and, for them, it is a family tradition. A true master and teacher of a martial art will accept his student as someone who is a part of his family. By doing that, he will teach him the same thing he has learned from his father or teacher – to respect the unwritten rules of the code of honor. Moreover, he will show him with his own example how to live by respecting the moral principles of the code of honor.

Previous generations, especially those that experienced technological transitions (radio, television, arrival of computers in homes, etc.), today find themselves inserted in a context that presents us with the equation: adapt or disappear! particular environment, or a change; it refers to the fact of accommodating or adjusting one thing to another. The concept has different meanings depending on what it is applied to: for example, adaptation is making a certain object or mechanism fulfill various functions for which it has been designed / built.

Times are different and, in us, the variables of these times require new mechanisms of internal composition. This is because the references we knew seem to disappear. In this sense, relationships tend to be more malleable and superficial. For Bauman, there is an intimate relationship between capitalism and these relationships, since this vision stimulates consumption. The same has happened with Martial Arts. It would be impossible for an exter nal phenomenon not to alter the individual effects, as we are inserted in different scenarios full of different landscapes. This leads us to think that the mechanisms of relationship with Martial Arts and derived sectors are no longer nor will they be as they were before. Adapt or disappear? When it comes to the adaptation of a living being, mention is made of the fact that it adapts to the conditions of its new environment. In the case of a human being, adaptation is related to the fact that he or she adapts to different circumstances and conditions.

Different thinkers believe that we are entering an era of "natural selection", regardless of the area in which we operate. This would be nothing new, as biological adaptation is a physiological process of an organism that has evolved over a period of time through natural selection. From the point of view of Martial Arts, each action, internal or external, raises its long-term expectations for successful reproduction. In the Internet times, what would this natural selection be? Is it possible to adapt? We can think that the adaptation of species, so to speak, refers to the ability of a given species to act in a new scenario (a new soil, a new climate, among others). The task of teaching Martial Arts within moder nity has demanded from its educators a higher level of adaptation, given that, in order to meet the demands of inter nal and external changes, the current world, as we know it, outlines new scenarios with different proportions that require adaptation. Will it be?

For Auguste Comte (1798-1857), French philosopher and mathematician - founder of positivism and father of sociology - man goes through three stages in life: theological state, metaphysical state and positive state the law of the three states. In the theological or fictitious state, the explanation of events arises from desires analogous to ours (the storm, for example, will be explained by a whim of nature, of the

winds). This state evolves from fetishism to polytheism and then to monotheism. In the metaphysical state, man spontaneously projects his own psychology onto nature. Already in a positive state, he is content to describe facts, without looking for too many explanations. He bases himself on the positive laws of nature that allow us, when a phenomenon occurs, to predict the next phenomenon and

In the face of technological advances and increased research in cognitive neuroscience, here following the same bias, researchers have made promising discoveries of how the neural connections that determine the learning process are made, also contributing concepts of brain plasticity inherent to this process, as Rotta points out (2007). Learning modifies the central nervous system, and this makes us think about brain plasticity,

On countless occasions I have been asked:

What is the meaning of learning Martial Arts in our days? What interest can there be in continuing to practice those a n c i e n t a r ts in the pr esent times of “peace”? Will Martial Arts be able to adapt to this new reality? I listen very carefully to the reasoning of Shidoshi Jordan Augusto because each sentence he writes is the pr oduct of a long life experience. Culture, knowledge and experimentation. A connoisseur of the "old and the new", there is no doubt: his skills after decades of Martial Arts practice, study, introspection and spirituality, have led to the emergence of this “new Renaissance man”, a person capable of writing, painting, playing music, mastering the arts of combat, healing… and all in one single life!

is reflection on the “liquid world” is of great interest because it explains, in my opinion, a large part of personal relationships today. In terms of technology, everything has a programmed obsolescence. On the contrary, in personal or even institutional relationships, everything has an “improvised obsolescence”. Dozens of ideas come to mind that perfectly reflect this concept about relationships, education and society. Referring to the Martial Arts world, the truth is that everything has changed in recent years to such an extent that looking back, it ca be easily seen that this “ecosystem” has been absolutely transformed. We could use that phrase that used to appear in the titles of fiction films years ago: “Any resemblance to reality is pure coincidence.” When Martial Arts began to become popular among the general public, largely due to the Martial Arts cinema, many joined the practice path

attracted by that “magic” transmitted to us by the Kung Fu movies that premiered big in theaters around the world. Subsequently, a large number of different systems began to sprout and the concepts of effectiveness and “selfdefense” were brought to the forefront. “If it doesn’t work on the street then it’s useless” (it surely sounds familiar to many). There was one time in which the search for “spirituality” had prevailed, in other times it was the practice in its more “sporty” side. Arts with a thousand faces and for a thousand different interests. However, in their creation, the purpose of combat systems was much simpler: Fighting efficiently to win a war or conflict. Martial Arts have changed over the years, as have their practitioners. Perhaps the appearance of technologies related to computing, or perhaps, simply the change of tastes or preferences in societies can explain many of these things.

And I mean societies, in the plural, because there have been several different and changing societies. Time has been modifying the way of life in a continuous adaptation to changes like never before in any other part of history. Change has always existed, but in the last fifty years, it seems that we are living at a speed that allows what is in force today, the day after tomorrow, to be the opposite. Martial Arts have accompanied the journey of many people and have become a fundamental factor in their training, education and goals in life. Undeniably, they have served as a vehicle that changed the behavior of

children who became adults and adults who grew old but never stopped practicing. Yes, Martial Arts became an educational factor that walks along people throughout their lives. Indeed, there were few those who knew how to fight for their life or for their country, but the side effects produced by continued practice have been very useful as tools that forge personalities and develop a feeling of respect, value and appreciation for others. Hard and constant work as a vehicle for progress. Tradition, history, folklore or, in any case, a practice with a sports background. For many, practicing Martial Arts has wrought an essential change in their lives and in the way they relate to society. The positive effect that the Martial Arts Life style has had in most cases is undeniable. Surely there are many things that have gotten worse, if we talk about strategy or technique (this would be another big subject to be discussed!), but, focusing on the positive aspects, we should highlight the great influence that the practice of the fighting arts

has had on so many people of different backgrounds and destinies. Few human activities have been able to bring together such a large number of practitioners of such diverse origins, ideologies, religions or faiths without distinguishing themselves by any of the above factors. Thatâ€™s the great contribution of the practice of Martial Arts to humanity. And maybe we should be content with that for now ... How will they adapt? What will their future be like? Thatâ€™s the million-dollar question! What is certain is that the "liquid world" has come to stay for a long season. Personally I believe that nothing is eternal and nothing is 100% good or bad. Therefore, what today is

present tomorrow will be past. And on the other hand, absolutely everything has a good and a bad part. Too much dramatization is meaningless in either position. A few days ago I was chatting with a good friend, a great Martial Arts practitioner for many years, about the apparent deterioration of this our world. Distressed, he couldn't help to evoke our years of learning, while lamenting how everything had definitely changed. A phrase came to mind: "Every man grows old when he thinks that any time in the past was a better ...". I tried to make him see the Taoist way of conceiving everything that happens in our world. Wu Wei… To flow. Let things happen as they have to. Surely, things are as they are because that’s the way they have to be now. We joked about paradigm shifts. On my last trip to Hong Kong, on a rush hour subway ride, I could observe that the 100% of the travelers were absolutely focused on their smartphones. Not a single sound. Absolute silence. Absolute focus on what each one had in their needs. Not a single sound. Absolute silence. Absolute focus on what each one had in their needs. And I could pull out a smile on my dear friend’s face with a reflection: Isn’t that a form of meditation? Adapt or Disappear. Martial Arts at a new crossroads. There’s no other choice. Adapt or Disappear. At the end of the day... Just those two options!

When most people hear the word Kyusho, or the words Pressure Points, it is one of two things that come to mind ... Self Defense or a healing modality such as Acupuncture or Massage Therapy. In each instance, they are correct. There are some who focus mostly on the self defense aspect and other whose focus is more into the healing. I personally know of several people who trained with me and became so excited about manipulating the Pressure Points for self defense that they enrolled in Acupuncture classes, Massage Classes and Chiropractic Classes. Each area of study requires extensive focus on the mechanics of the body and how the practitioner can "assist" the body into healing itself. This is not an end all be all and each patient must be accountable for their health and lifestyle habits. This video will focus on how we can use the same 5 points for both healing and self defense. This is where knowledge of anatomy, basic principles of motion, and developing a sensitive touch come into play. Pressure Points have multiple uses for both health and self defense and can be a great complement to one another. For each to be effective, the practitioner must develop a quiet, relaxed mind, which can assess each situation to hopefully bring about the result desired.

History of the Gunstock Warclub (Part 2) The Causation of the Gunstock Warclub The inspiration and design of the Notini-towin-mistik (Gunstock War Club) most certainly came from warriors who observed the effective "physical" impact power of it being swung and hitting an adversary in hand-to-hand confrontations. There are historical accounts from actual engagements that took place that once the weapon was no longer able to fire due to lack of powder, lead, matchlock or flint, it was simply rotated around, held by the barrel and used as a clubbing weapon. Therefore, it is easy to realize that the Gunstock Warclub came to fruition as a result of its visual impact and ef fective combat use against adversaries. The name of the weapon Gunstock Warclub was derived from the shape and design of the instrument.

owever despite the similar rifle stock appearance of the Gunstock Warclub, it was never made from a spent musket or from the wooded stock section which may have been leftover and subsequently acquired. It should be noted that even though the shape of the flintlock musket has a very close similarity to that of the indigenous impact weapon, any rifle stock that was around and available to us to modify for a club well into the 1800's, would have been terribly unreliable as an effective impact implement. Within

a standard musket set up, the firing mechanism and mechanical assembly area is actually set within the weakest part of the firearm where the wood is not only curved, but actually hollowed-out to be able to accommodate the complete firing apparatus for the firearm. Having said this, even if a warclub was fashioned out of a musket, any impact to the area of the curve where the flintlock's hammer, frizzen, pan, spring, screws and lock plate once were would certainly splinter and break after a limited amount of striking on an adversary.

Indigenous Ingenuity Historically we crafted our Warclubs using various woods that we located throughout our respective regions and territories. This wood would have to be able accommodate the punishment that these weapons would have to endure. These Warclubs were always fabricated from hardwoods which were usually straight grained in nature. The natural hardwoods which needed to be located within a tribal area would be Ash, Hornbeam, Maple, Oak, Birch, Walnut, Hickory and even Cedar. Of course this all depends on where the wood was actually located if any. In some documented

"post-contact" cases, some warclubs were actually fabricated from planks of hardwood that was obtained from the sides of settler's wagons as well as hardwood that was used from large wooden shipping crates. This procedure was usually noted to happen out on the Great Plains where the availability of good hardwood was quite limited. Once a good section of hardwood was obtained, it was then cut and smoothed down into the shape of a musket stock. However, it was never the same thickness nor the weight to that of an actual rifle stock. The Gunstock Warclub was noted to be thinner around the handle as well as the edged area of the weapon. This

allowed the user to maintain an effective grip during combat as well as use the thin perimeter as an incredible impact edge similar to that of a blunt tomahawk blade. Furthermore, an iron or steel blade (usually double edged) was embedded into the outside elbow point of the weapon. Once all of the combat points of the weapon were completed, the warrior usually added their own artistic signatures to their club. This could include brass tacks, animal hide, hair, paint or any other attachment that could induce spiritual power for the weapon. After its full assembly and adornment, the Gunstock Warclub could be between two to three feet in length and weighing from 1.5 to 3 pounds. The size of the weapon would be made by the warrior, for the warrior so depending on their size and strength, the weapon is designed to totally accommodate fighters making every Gunstock Warclub very unique.

Gunstock Warclub Combat Applications and Effectiveness The Gunstock Warclub was noted to be lighter than many other clubs that were used throughout North America in the era of indigenous hand to hand combat engagements. In particular, the other well known club was the Ball Headed Warclub. It was found to be not only shorter than that of the Gunstock Warclub, but also heavier and limited in it's capacity of unique movement. The combat advantage of the Gunstock Warclub to that of the Ball Headed Warclub was it's reach as well as the unique blade installation which was usually located at the top elbow of the weapon. The swinging force of the Gunstock Warclub always focused onto the small striking edges of the club which hit with remarkable power. The lethality of the club was as a result of its speed as well as the blade positioned on the outside elbow of the club. The Gunstock Warclub also provides a significant counter assault advantage and truly effective tactical defense application. Because of its unique blade addition and position on the weapon, an enemy grabbing the weapon to stop it or retain it is quite a dangerous option. The warrior simply has to pull the weapon back, or thrust it forward which usually results with the opponent's hand(s) getting severely damaged.

As well unlike other impact clubs, the Gunstock Warclub doesnâ€™t necessarily need a lot of space to generate its incredible velocity to accommodate an impact to the enemy. Simple rotation of the wrists, arms and shoulders as well as proper footwork make this weapon a truly effective combat implement in hand to hand combat. Even from horseback, a warrior could use a long version of the Gunstock Warclub and chop or swing through at any adversary along their path. It's light enough to not throw the wielder off balance and even if the elbow's blade did not hit the enemy, the thin edge caused devastating damage. Well into the 1800â€™s the Gunstock Warclub continued it's psychological advantage over the enemy by simply having it observed by the enemy from a distance. What was truly unique to the Gunstock Warclub was that many times it was also used as a device of impersonation. From a distance, the Gunstock Warclub could be manipulated to also look like the warrior was in possession of a firearm. Tribes who had no firearms would be more intimidated through this observation. A great trick that was performed was that warrior's would hold the Gunstock Warclub as well as their short lance together on the same side and with the same hand, which provided a great deception to the enemy.

Okichitaw Indigenous Combat and the Gunstock Warclub The closest that Okichitaw gets to any form or pattern that may be considered similar to that of other traditional martials arts is through our weapon movements. So for example with respect to the Okichitaw Gunstock Warclub, there are a total of 33 offensive and defensive movements, all of which not only increase in speed, but lethality as well. The weapon's counter-blocking movements are also considered offensive movements as they are intended to either damage the opponent, disarm them, break their weapon or simply create a large line of attack which can be further exploited. The movement application the Gunstock Warclub is applied through an assortment of horizontal strikes accompanied heavily by vertical figure-eight patterns. When these movements are first learned by the student, they are conducted while the student remains stationary. As the student advances in their techniques, full forward movement is then applied, right up to the point of being able to effectively execute the tactic while running at full speed into an attack. The uniqueness of the Gunstock Warclubs's agility actually allows the user to generate a significant amount of momentum which always leads to a devastating impact. As indicated earlier, the Okichitaw Gunstock Warclub applies it's aggressive impact and ruthless crushing usually followed up by cutting the opponent with the blade (located on the outside elbow of

the weapon). Physical training and conditioning to work with the Gunstock Warclub is paramount as all of your body mechanics located in the areas of your forearms, shoulders, hands and especially your wrists are always challenged. This strength training has to be conducted to ensure that any user of this weapon can maintain good recovery of it, especially if they initiate a committed strike with it. Unlike the Tomahawk, the Gunstock Warclub does not provide the user the same type of grip and feel when initiating a strike or swing. If youâ€™ve ever swung an axe or tomahawk, the first thing you notice is that the heavy head of the hawk has a tendency to totally control the movement, especially if you swing it fast. Recovery with a tomahawk is much more challenging than that of the Gunstock Warclub and this is as a result of its shape and lightness. The centrifugal force that is produced with the Gunstock Warclub is much more manageable than that of the tomahawk, and because of this, it has always been faster in hand to hand combat. The other advantage of the Gunstock Warclub over the tomahawk is the quick mobility of the weapon. You can move from a defensive application to a lethal one in an instant by simply manipulating the handle, redirecting your circular movement and adjusting your position. The tomahawk has trouble with this, as mostly everyone uses the tomahawk like a hammer - once you swing it, youâ€™ve committed yourself and there is no turning back. So having said this, the Gunstock Warclub used in Okichitaw is one of the only impact weapons that the user

can adjust their fierceness from effective impact strikes to lethal impalement. As I noted earlier the Gunstock Warclub was made from various types of hardwoods, however with the availability of moder n manufacturing developments in the use of metals and plastics, we are now seeing examples of somewhat similar indigenous weapons being made through the application of injection molding (e.g. high impact polypropylene). These modern versions provide a fairly good example of the historical Gunstock Warclub design. Okichitaw Indigenous Combat Arts uses a variety of Gunstock Warclubs made from a variety of materials including these modern versions. These clubs are literally indestructible and can be dropped, smashed and thrown with little damage to the implement, making it an excellent standard for our repetitive martial arts weapon training and impact usage. Today, in Okichitaw we continue our teachings and training with the Gunstock Warclub. By doing this it ensures that we will never forget its unique history and tradition. We simply tap into our own blood-memory to make sure that we teach the traditions of our past, to ensure our nations remain strong for the future.

Dodges While everyone agrees that it is essential to know how to dodge blows, in reality very few people practice dodging with seriousness and efficiency. Apart from boxers, many combat sports a n d m a r t i a l a r t s t ot a l l y o r p a r t i a l l y neglect the work of dodging. Ye t d o d g i n g o f f e r s a m u l t i t u d e o f advantages in combat and during assault. Indeed, dodging one or more allows, among other things, a free hand to fight back and thus save significant time on the opponent. When the hands have to be used to block first and then to hit, there is an undeniable waste of time which usually results in the inability to hit an opponent.

Jeet Kune Do his one is already able to protect itself during our response because of the time lost to protect us and then to the adjustment of our strikes. Or if we dodge, then it is possible to retaliate immediately and thus be able to hit the opponent in action. When we know that a person who hits is often discovered, we then realize that dodging will allow us to hit a vulnerable person and thus obtain maximum efficiency from our strike compared to the process of blocking and then hitting. This action is often summed up as Lin Sil Die Da which means blocking and simultaneous strike, but we can also dodge and strike simultaneously without needing to first block and thus occupy our hands. It may seem ridiculous, but during an assault in the street, the fact of blocking and hitting in two stages or of blocking and hitting simultaneously, we uncover ourselves and we are for a short time vulnerable. Or if it's a group assault, every strike must be effective and we must also avoid losing our guard. In fact, with each action of the hands, we uncover ourselves on one side or the other. As a result, dodges reduce the danger of losing our guard. In addition, dodges also allow you to escape. When a strike or strikes come, dodging gives the opportunity to get off-center and thus run away. Dodging is a great way to avoid having to strike and thus having problems during an assault. Furthermore, during a confrontation in the street, you never know whether the person or people who attack us are armed or not. Therefore, dodging attacks will allow us to maintain a more interesting distance than blocking strikes. In addition, it will also prevent injury or death if the attacker (s) are armed. In a knife attack, the slightest contact with the body will cause more or less vital injuries, which could cost us our lives. Whereas if we dodge, we will avoid contact with the aggressor as much as possible and thus the risk of being cut or killed. In addition, as seen above, we can better try to escape by dodging and also avoid getting tired by blocking all attacks. Of course, dodging takes a lot of work because nothing comes easily in life. It will therefore be necessary to work tirelessly, the ability to move with ease during strikes, develop the flexibility of our body (trunk, head, leg) in order to be able to move the whole body very easily even if we canâ€™t move. In addition, we will have to work on our timing because without timing, nothing is possible. The goal will always be to dodge as much as possible in order to flee and to block when there is no other choice. Engaging your upper or lower limbs is only a last resort. As long as you can dodge to get away, that is better than engaging in combat. Dodging then allows us to destabilize the opponent who gets tired and cannot touch us. It is a huge psychological asset to make doubt someone who hits us. This one then tends to send more blows which will exhaust it. In addition, the shots are no longer targeted and precise because the only desire of the person is to try to touch us to reassure themselves and gain the upper hand. The more the person doubts the more we win the fight psychologically. Thus the dodges, unlike blockages are a formidable weapon and without risk for our physical integrity. Indeed, during a block, the opponent can see and notice the effects of his strike on our body through our reactions such as winces, the position of our body revealing an injury ... Conversely, dodging does not affect our physical integrity because there is no contact with the opposing body. As mentioned above, as a last resort when one cannot dodge one or more strikes, one can then block and then dodge again afterwards. Dodging and blocking must be complementary and must become natural and innate. To dodge, we must not think, otherwise the time to think of dodging, the strike will have arrived on our body. You have to react instinctively thanks to the work done during training. As always, the key word remains training, sweat, pain and tears during training sessions in order to be able to defend oneself effectively in an assault. Without this hard work and all the suffering in our training, we'll never get anywhere. Hard work and selflessness are the secrets to success. Verbiage is only useful to mask our incompetence.

Despite claims to the contrary, the authors have yet to find a specific target point that works on every person, every time. Oriental Medicine and the Martial Artist Most serious martial artists have explored the relationship between oriental medicine and the Martial Arts. This magazine has published a number of good articles on effects of acupoint strikes directed to specific points on the human body. While there is certainly room for debate on the effects of these different strikes, the theories from which they flow have developed over thousands of years. Before a martial artist can utilize these techniques to the maximum benefit, he or she should have a basic understanding of the theories from which these martial recipes developed. Oriental Medicine looks at the human body from a completely different perspective than Western allopathic medicine. According to Oriental Medicine, the human body is laced with meridians, collaterals, and vessels which store and transport energy. Understanding the way the body functions can be confusing at best to the uninitiated because the â€˜philosophyâ€™ of these modalities has direct ties to Eastern thought and cultural influences which seem foreign and counter-intuitive to Western anatomical understanding.

Reviewing the Classic Videos Yin and Yang One of the basic theories of Oriental Medicine is that of Yin and Yang. The theory of Yin-Yang holds that the world is material and the material world evolves constantly as the result of the mutual action of these two opposing material forces. The theory of Yin and Yang first appeared in the “Yi Jing” (Book of Changes). Originally, Yin and Yang were used to describe two slopes of a mountain. The sunny side was Yang and the shady side was Yin. Later, their meaning broadened to include all opposites. Oriental medicine views different parts of the body as either Yin or Yang. For example, the upper and exterior parts of the body belong to Yang and the lower and interior parts to Yin; the hands belong to Yang; while the feet to Yin; the five Zang organs pertain to Yin; the six Fu organs to Yang. These concepts are of particular interest to the martial artist since the Yang areas of the body appear to be more energetic and stronger attacks tend to focus on the body’s Yin areas. It should be noted that nothing is absolutely Yang or absolutely Yin, the concept is relative. The inter-transforming nature of Yin and Yang allows these concepts to be constantly in flux, the same way day turns into night. There is also an element of the infinite in this theory in that Yin and Yang can be infinitely divided into themselves. In the human body the inter-dependence of Yin and Yang can be seen as a natural function. Yin and Yang exist in a dynamic state of mutual restriction in which they consume and support each other. This is sometimes known as the "harmony between Yin and Yang”. If there is an imbalance, then the body is no longer able to function correctly, resulting in either the excess or the deficiency of Yin or Yang. The excess of Yin leads to disorders of Yang, and the excess of Yang leads disorders of Yin.

Five Element (Phase) Theory The five elements refer to five categories in the natural world, namely wood, fire, earth, metal and water. The theory of the five elements was first formed in China at about the times of the Yin and Zhou dynasties. Each of the twelve major meridians is classified as belonging to a specific element and are further divided by their Yin or Yang natures. These substances are in a state of constant motion and change. That is why it is know as Five Element (Phase) Theory. Among the five elements, there exist the relations of production (promotion), controlling (restriction), subjugation and reducing (reverse restriction). Generally speaking, each of the paired organ systems corresponds to an element. These organ systems and their dominant times are listed as follows: Fire: Heart (lesser Yin/11AM-1PM), Small Intestine (greater Yang/1PM-3PM), Sovereign Fire Pericardium (absolute Yin/7PM-9PM), Triple Heater (lesser Yang/9-PM/11PM); Earth: Stomach (sunlight Yang/7AM-9AM), Spleen (greater Yin/9AM-11AM); Metal: Large Intestine (sunlightYang/5AM-7AM), Lungs (greater Yin/3AM-5AM); Water: Bladder (greater Yang/3PM-5PM), Kidney (lesser Yin/5PM-7AM); Wood: Gallbladder (lesser Yang/11PM1AM), Liver (absolute Yin/1AM-3AM). Within each organ system there are specific points which also correspond to the five elements. They are referred to as the Five-Shu points. The Jing-Well, Ying-Spring, ShuStream, Jing-River and He-Sea points of the Yin meridians correspond to wood, fire, earth, metal and water, respectively, while those of the Yang meridians correspond to

â€œIn other words, this type of strike can cause systemic damage and cause the body to fall out of its natural harmony. The body would have difficulty healing itself without intervention. From an oriental medical perspective this may take the form of acupuncture, massage, or even herbal treatments.â€?

In addition, it is common in clinical practice to determine the principle of treatment and selection of points according to the pathological influences among the Zang-Fu organs, which follow the cycle of the five elements. Many experts claim that Dim Mak reverse engineers these principles. The techniques are designed to cause dysfunction within a particular meridian causing a cascade effect within the other affected organ systems. Whether the technique causes local dysfunction or a chronic imbalance depends on the skill of the practitioner.

Oriental Medicine & Martial Arts The history of the Martial Arts is steeped in myth and legend. Depending on your style, you may or may not be able to trace your artâ€™s history to its ancestral roots. Unfortunately, the older the art the more difficult it is to separate historical fact from historical fiction. The same can be said about oriental medicine. Depending on the source, the history of oriental medicine can be traced back between 3,000 to 5,000 years. With such an incredible span of time to deal with, much of the early histories of the arts have been lost to conjecture and speculation. Fortunately, some of the ancient texts have survived to the present day. Texts such as the Inner Canon of the Yellow Emperor, and the Classic of Questions offer a unique viewpoint of an ancient culture and learning. Writings such as these open both a window into the past and a guide to the future. Oriental medicine is an experiment that has survived for thousands of years to provide us with a unique picture of the human condition. There is no doubt OM was influenced by the culture of the time. Early practitioners of oriental medicine applied dialectical materialism to the theories of essence and Qi, Yin and Yang, and the five elements. They paired their observations with the analysis of random medical experiences, and eventually developed these experiences into a systematic medical model that has flourished and grown to its present state. Most Asian-style Martial Arts developed during the same time period and were influenced by the same

cultural trends as medicine. Although the two developed independently of each other, there are indications that a cross blending of information did occur. The use of acupoints and oriental medical theory is discussed in writings on Dimak and Bubushi. Although the past interactions between the martial and healing arts is interesting from a purely academic perspective, the authors felt it was important to discuss the relevance of how Martial Arts techniques can be enhanced through a knowledge of human anatomy as understood through Oriental Medicine. To better understand how oriental medicine interacts with Martial Arts we began discussing various aspects of their interconnectivity with Qingping Chen PhD, L.Ac., OMD. Dr. Chen has studied Traditional Chinese Medicine for over 20 years. Prior to opening a practice in the USA, Chen was a physician and researcher for the government in Beijing, China. He has studied both Tai Chi and Qi

Gong extensively and has definite opinions about the effect of directed Martial Arts techniques on the bodyâ€™s systems. According to Chen, strikes to acupoints along the meridian system usually only have what he describes as a local effect. This means one or two strikes to a specific point wonâ€™t usually cause a systemic imbalance. There may be some minor residual side effects on the local point or within the system, but generally the flow of Qi is not disrupted enough to cause lasting damage. The reason for this assertion is that the body is unique to the individual and very resilient. To understand the basic concepts behind this logic one has to turn to oriental medical theory itself. Practitioners of oriental medicine are well versed in a number of interconnected but separate theories such as Yin/Yang, five element (phase), and Zang-Fu.

Reviewing the Classic Videos These theories are used in conjunction with a number of very complicated diagnostic techniques to determine where and why an imbalance is occurring within the body. For instance, an oriental medicine practitioner may examine the qualities of a person’s pulses, the coating and texture of his or her tongue, the body may be palpitated, numerous questions may be asked all to begin to understand the pathologic changes that are taking place in a patient’s body. Based on the practitioner’s understanding and analysis, an individualized treatment plan is created. Treatment is given holistically and not symptomatically. In other words, the treatment I receive for a stomachache may be very different from the one you receive for yours, even if we see the same practitioner. Certain systems may need to be toned, while others may need to be controlled to help the body heal itself. The individual ‘recipe’ can very greatly from person to person. If this is true for healing, it is also true for harming. Most acupoints located on the extremities are not so easily damaged as to cause lasting disharmony within the individual. There are points on the trunk of the body and the head that are located over vital points and strong strikes to these areas can cause permanent damage or death. For instance a strike to RN 23 could crush the esophagus or Adam’s apple. A palm-heal strike to GB 1 or SJ 23 could fracture the temple bones and damage the brain. Although these strikes are located upon meridians, it is not necessarily the organ system the strike is acting upon to cause damage, but rather the structure of the body itself.

Reviewing the Classic Videos The same can not always be said about cluster strikes or strong repetitive strikes to certain acupoints. To illustrate this concept, in a rare and candid conversation, Dr. Chen described potential outcomes of directed techniques to the lower abdomen. The area is located slightly inferior to the navel and is considered a major energy gate by several different oriental medical and martial traditions. A cluster strike to

this area can be devastating. If the meridians are viewed bi-laterally, there are seven meridians (Spleen, Stomach, Kidney, Ren, Kidney, Stomach, Spleen) running through the lower part of the abdomen. A significant strike to this point cluster could cause both Qi stagnation and blood stasis. In other words, this type of strike can cause systemic damage and cause the body to fall out of its natural

harmony. The body would have difficulty healing itself without intervention. From an oriental medical perspective this may take the form of acupuncture, massage, or even herbal treatments. Understanding the basics of oriental medicine is not a foreign concept to many forms of Martial Arts. A number of Jujitsu and Hapkido styles require students to learn various types of oriental massage to help prevent the blockage of Qi and maintain harmony within the body. Qigong is

practiced extensively by Chinese marital artists to help keep their health in balance. Given the fact that there are so many different forms of Martial Arts practiced which encourage the study of oriental medicine, it is disheartening to see so much inaccurate information being published on the subject. Our next article will look at oriental medicine, and acupoint manipulation from the perspective of some well known martial artists who have studied the healing and warrior arts.

Jukoshin Ryu. An effective self-defense system. The Jukoshin Ryu style of Jiu Jitsu was designed to be a powerful and definitive tool in hand-to-hand combat. In the same way that many weapons have been developed to provide advantages in combat, the human body has also improved the ways of using its natural weapons, that is, its structural components head, trunk and limbs, for the purpose of attack and defense. In some American GJJ online courses, which are of course booming because of the current COVID-19 situation, there is more and more talk that when dominating a position, let's take the "Mount" as an example, and the shoulder-lock (also known as Americana) as a technique, you should negotiate with the opponent to get away from a life-threatening attack! Negotiate? I wonder if these people who watch these instructional videos ever really had to use their Jiu-Jitsu in a "life-threatening" situation. To negotiate, you not only need the right position, which I believe is not only true in Gracie Jiu-Jitsu, but in all situations, and I also need time, which I have never had in a street situation. I needed to act quickly and efficiently to protect myself and others! What do you think?

o you really want, while sitting on the stomach of an opponent and putting a shoulder-lock on him, to ask him why you were attacked and whether, before you make the decision to rip his shoulder out, "...please be so kind and let me go or I will have to hurt you!â€? You cannot be serious, can you? This "political" correctness is completely out of place here. It is already clear to me that one tries to be "politically" correct, but in self-defense - where it is a matter of LIFE or DEATH - to make such compromises is rather questionable. In the USA, a big "campaign" against the abuse of force by the police forces has been running for months. I also think that some things - and not only in the police force - should be updated and improved,

but this should be done continuously and not only when something happens. In other words, more money needs to be invested in training to have professional and competent trainers. TIME is also an important factor here, because to have an excellent instructor, you must put a lot more time into the training. But now back to the topic of "negotiating" in an SD situation! After I have brought down the opponent with a big effort, you probably lose a bit of breath, and with a bit of luck you get to the position (Mount) mentioned above... now I am sitting on the stomach of the opponent, who would be like a wild monkey, and I am supposed to find the strength and time to negotiate with him? Maybe you should also consider that the same attacker, just a few minutes ago, wanted to take their head off!

So there we both are, lying on the ground and "cuddling" around a bit (I mean you and your opponent, of course), and now you are taught in a GJJ lesson that you should negotiate for your life during the cuddling round! I find that unrealistic and absurd! I am sure that those who came up with such an idea must be super nice people and I would like to meet them if I did not already. But in real life and in a life-threatening situation such a thing would pretty much certainly not end well. Everybody who has ever been in such a situation, when using a lock on the streets, knows that such a technique

quickly leaves a lot of damage. We are not tied up in a Dojo anymore now, where both practitioners will train the technique and stop at the onset of pain. As a martial artist I train in such a way that I adapt my techniques to the situation. But on the streets other factors come into play, such as adrenaline and emotions. Training can and will never be reality. Just ask a Thai or Kickboxer if sparring with his training colleague was the same or alike his last fight match against an unknown opponent! Therefore, I personally advise against a "cuddle round" with a negotiation strategy!

At the beginning, when you learn the "Americana" in Jiu-Jitsu for the first time, you should be also told that using this lock will knock your opponent's shoulder out "instantly". What you should also not expect is that the opponent will "tap-out", like in your Dojo training. Which would probably be more likely to expect that he would start screaming around and after you have torn out his shoulder, you should call an ambulance if you are able to do so, so that you are not mutated from the role of a "helpless victim" into the role of a "brutal fighter" in court!

In a situation that must be mastered by police forces, this is of course different, because in most cases the officers work in pairs. But there are hundreds of clips on YouTube which show police officers in training with Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, who master their excellent technique, but they also know that this does not correspond to reality. No matter who wants to sell you something, you always must be critical. The only advice I can always give in these cases is that on the Tatame - among friends and training colleagues, exchange information in such a way that you try things out, but always ask yourself what could actually still happen and

how could an attacker behave. Simply copying one or the other technique and imitating it is not enough in any case.
