For a short time, we think that the best option is to leave only for those who come to our formations and trust us the depth of practice and the details. Most probably we are not aware now of the great advance in the study of the system, but I am very sure that in a few years, many Wing Chun practitioners from different branches will "copy" These ideas to show your students and schools. eaching is a gift and it can be quite an art, but it is essentially a personal grace that is based on several points. Knowledge is not a minor one, of course, but knowing is not enough to be a good Master, because teaching is a vocation that has its origin in a generous and patient personality. Teaching is giving others the gold of knowledge and, with it, the most brilliant tool of consciousness. But a Master can only be munificent if he has an unwavering faith in the human race, and it's precisely this magnanimity that endows him with all it takes to succeed in his profession. We have all seen boring and awful disciplines become something truly interesting by the hand of a good Master. Classes with bland subjects were crowded in universities, while others, so appealing on the syllabus, remained empty. One thing is certain, for us human beings knowing is always loving, because only the known is pleasing to us; only the recognizable can be desired, only when we really glimpse the possibility of mastering an issue at some point, can we give ourselves fully to its study and its conquest. My grandfather made me love Latin at a time in which it was hard for me, and he knew how to do it because he was a great Master. On the contrary,

They bore everyone with periphrasis; reluctant and even afraid to share, they admonish the students and sanction them with short prayers for their lack of attention, commitment or little interest. Glimpsing the possibility of understanding, of mastering any subject, is the greatest carrot to make the student progress. A good Master awakens the greed for knowledge that nests inside each one of us, and administers it with wisdom and kindness, because he trusts in the eternal transmission process to which we are all summoned in our finitude, but also because he grants much more value to his knowledge than to himself. From Bruce Lee to his protégé Dan Inosanto to myself to my top instructors such as Pedro Rodriguez and even to all our new batch of apprentice instructors (who we are currently searching for) Progressive Fighting Systems Contemporary Jeet Kune Do’s ethos is to build a fighter emotionally first. Pardon the cliché, but I have saved the best for last. Before we can defeat somebody physically, we must defeat them emotionally. Before we defeat someone else’s emotions we must be in command of our own. Before we can be in command of our own emotions, we must be able to know, feel, differentiate and process them, period ! Now let us reverse engineer paragraph one. By starting to take the myriad of complicated emotions and reduce them to a simple 6. It is helpful before we do this to completely understand why. The six emotions that I am about to share with you absolutely, positively, must first and foremost be understood and differentiated. So here we go… Mad, Sad, Glad, Afraid, Ashamed, Hur t. (When one is in a street fight these 6 emotions are all thrown in one “soup”.

The implications of this are, the anger you could have for somebody, could be a m p l i f y i n g y o u r f e a r, a n d m a k e y o u debilitated and you don’t even know why. Where the fear that you have in this fight, maybe due to simple adrenaline, and one is unable to process it properly due to physiology! Or it could mean that you have “Afraid”, enmeshed with “Mad”, and you ar e wondering why you ar e unable to turn on your killer Instinct !

could go on, giving examples of what happens when people are out of touch with their feelings, 8 hours a day for a year and never repeat myself. That is how prevalent the problem is, both in a street fight and in life itself.) Now getting back to our 6 emotions, lets take one at a time. Mad, we can pretty much relate too. Sad, most of us understand what Sad means. Glad, simply means happy. Afraid, is another word for Fear. Ashamed, is another word for Shame, Guilt, and perhaps Embarrassment. And Hurt, which tends to be a bit ambiguous for everybody. It has to do with loss. If you lose a loved one the pain you feel would actually lean more towards hurt than sad. Now that we know what the 6 simplified emotions are, and have done a differentiation. Let us now proceed to a rudimentary readers digest version of how to process these different emotions. First and foremost, understand this… 99 out of 100 people do not know how to feel, differentiate, or process, all they do is stuff. Once we stuff one emotion on top of another, we create this “emotional toxic Lasagna”, which resembles a Volcano that could literally blow up at any time for any reason. Now let us get back to the proper way to deal with emotions, in lue of stuffing we process ! There is a formula that we use, just like Martial Arts, just like the R.A.T.

Jeet Kune Do Here goes… When you fee This formula guarantees that you are not degrading, humiliating, or exacerbating the situation, it simply guarantees that you inform someone, that when they behave a certain way, this is how you feel. Eg, “Sam, when you raise your voice at me, I feel sad.” Or, “Judy, when you laugh at me, I feel hurt”, etc, etc… The next emotion to process is sad. When something typically makes us sad, we try to take our mind off of it with distractions. May, I humbly suggest, that you meditate on what is making you sad. Sit down, breath deeply, cry if you have too, and as you breath into the sadness, this “non resisting” energy will process the sadness away. The next emotion, is glad. Which means happy, enjoy your sh!t eating grin. The next emotion Afraid, which means fear. Shine the light on your fear and it will disappear as quickly as darkness disappears when you shine the light on it. What ever your fear, face it, confront it, and embrace it. When I started Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Rickson used to give me panic attacks, we would wrestle for a couple of hours straight, he would mount me in the 102 degree heat of California, and I used to panic. All I ever did was fight to get the hell off the bottom. Fight, fight, fight ! And then, eventually when he got me on the bottom, my resistance would turn to panic.

Indeed to this day, I prefer starting from my back. Fear is gone. The next emotion, ashamed. This is the same as shame, guilt and embarrassment. This means that you have judged your behavior, the behavior is in the past, and you have been unable to forgive yourself. Answer, just like fear, shame can not exist in the light. Whatever is in the deepest darkest bowels of your closet, bring them out, talk about them, and the light will disintegrate them. Our final emotion is Hurt. Hurt is a sadness caused from a loss. First and foremost we have to properly greave from this loss, and the second half of healthy grieving is to replace what was lost. This could include a puppy, a car, or a husband. In conclusion I realize by so rapidly changing course on the “combat” index, and going from headbutts and elbows, to feeling feelings, might be a bit much for some of you. Indeed, I can picture a few of my New York buddies, with disgruntled looks, grabbing their crotch, simultaneously proclaiming, “Yo Vu, If I wanted Dr Phil I wooda, put on Oprah”… Forget about Oprah boys, she don’t got no ground game.

Differentiating Emotions Before we master the emotional dimension it is imperative that we understand the actual “end game”. First and foremost, no person on

earth can control their feelings, that is one of man kinds biggest misnomers. Think about itâ€Ś If you are walking your child across the street, and they get hit by a vehicle, is it possible to not be sad ? If you are walking down that same street, and that vehicle is chasing you and your child, is it possible not to feel fear ? So at the end of the day, none of us are in control of our feelings. What differentiates a warrior from the average person however, is how one reacts to their feelings. If the average person while walking their child is suddenly confronted with a violent speeding vehicle, there is a good chance their fear will debilitate them. Their reaction, instead of grabbing the child and evading the vehicle, would more resume a dear staring frozen in headlights. A warrior on the other hand, will feel the exact same fear as an

“If you could indulge me for a moment, I would like to share with you another dangerous and common misnomer… Confusing, fear with panic.” average person. However, that “feeling”, not only will not debilitate them, that “feeling”, will actually improve their agility, and nimbleness. The so called, war hero, who does amazing things in battle, I can assure you feels the same fear, as his fellow soldiers. How they react to that fear, is what actually makes them a hero. Now getting back to our original points, of differentiating, and processing emotions, and ascertaining an “end-game”. First and foremost, when we come to realize that everyone feels fear, everyone feels sadness, everyone feels anger, etc, etc… That actual knowledge becomes a tool for empowerment. While the average person, is bucking and fighting these emotions head on, the warrior, is excepting these feelings, allowing them to come in and be processed. If you could indulge me for a moment, I would like to share with you another dangerous and common misnomer… Confusing, fear with panic. Panic is something we feel, when we are tired, angry and claustrophobic. A good example is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Imagine being exhausted, you are

Jeet Kune Do wrestling with somebody, that you really really want to beat, and you are in that moment struggling not to be on the bottom, typically what happens at this juncture, physiologically the heart rate sky rockets, we vascilate between hyper ventilating and holding our breath. And whatever drop of energy we had left in our body, we used up with “reckless disregard”. There is a very very simple answer to never panic again. We simply desensitize our selves (this is a Seal Team Six Technique I used to Call Stress Inoculation). Never ever again fear the bottom, simply embrace the bottom. Spend 50 hours on the bottom and your fear will be gone. As the biofeedback axiom goes, control follows awareness. Therefore the more we are aware of our feelings the more we can control our reaction to them. The more we are aware of panic, the more we can control our reaction to it. And I can tell you from 25 years of wrestling with the greatest Jiu-Jitsu proponents on planet earth, that all of these people have one thing in common, “the mastery of the reaction to their feelings”... The End Game !

Due the uncertainties surrounding freedom of movement in many countries and the global health situation resulting from the covid 19 pandemic, we decided to pass to next year our meeting in the hope that by then the situation will have improved. Grand Masters THE VALUE OF MARTIAL ARTS SEMINARS By Grandmaster John Pellegrini

There is no way of establishing with any certainty when the trend of conducting seminars started to take hold in the Martial Arts industry, and who was the first to introduce that trend. Today, we simply take for granted the fact that seminars of almost every art / style known, taught by prominent instructors, renown experts and famous champions, are available and accessible virtually every week, in many countries the world. But, in fact, seminars are a relatively recent innovation in the Martial Arts; an innovation that was not universally welcomed and, in some cases, even faced a considerable amount of resistance and hostility. For centuries, many professions, arts and sciences have held periodic symposiums, conferences, conventions, workshops and seminars to share knowledge, introduce new discoveries, exchange information, showcase products and services, promote collaboration, recruit students to that particular field, and even attract potential investors. Most of these events, however, take the form of “lectures” presented by key-note speakers or round-table discussions with panels of experts. And today, taking advantage of modern technology, they often include fancy, state-of-the-art, digital, power-point and audio-visual presentations. On the other hand, Martial Arts seminars are primarily “hands-on” training sessions, where participants are shown specific techniques by the Teacher and are expected to practice them by physically interacting with a partner (with the exception of “katas”). Ideally, the Teacher, after demonstrating and explaining the technique, will walk ar ound, checking the students’ performance, critiquing, correcting and encouraging their effort.

he current martial Arts seminar model started gaining popularity in the early 1980s and, as I mentioned, in some quarters it was at first received with suspicion and disapproval. There are several reasons for this initial hostility, and some, sadly, persist to this day:

• Jealously protecting the “secrets” of an art or the uniqueness of a tribal / family style not to be shared or revealed to outsiders or to a different ethnic group. • Fear (insecurity!) that students of a certain art, when exposed to a different art (by attending seminars), would find it more exciting / interesting / effective or just better suited to their needs or abilities, and then possibly deserting their original art. • The Teacher’s ego offended by the fact that their students would be interested in checking-out another art, or (worse!) dare to cross-train in another style, thus implying that their original art was not complete or “not good enough”. • Financial considerations. Teachers want their students to spend their money in their schools and not “waste it” on fees for seminars of a “competing” teacher or style. To be sure, even before the advent of the modern seminar format, there were frequent and popular Martial Arts events mostly in the form of tournaments / championships. Some, like Ed Parker’s Long Beach International for instance, have rightfully become part of Martial Arts history: it was at this inaugural championship in 1964 that Bruce Lee was introduced to the Martial Arts community. And who can forget the iconic bouts of legendary fighters such as Bill Wallace, Joe Lewis, Chuck Norris, Jeff Smith, Benny Urquidez, Kathy Long and Don Wilson? Incidentally, it was not uncommon at those championships to feature special martial arts demonstrations during a break in the competition. But because of their short duration and no audience participation, they cannot be considered “seminars”. Another important and wildly popular event was the show “Oriental World of Self-Defense” created in New York in 1966 by the late Grandmaster Aaron Banks (1928 – 2013). This exciting and groundbreaking show was the first to bring together leading instructors of many different styles to demonstrate their special skills and to showcase the unique characteristics of their arts. This show became so successful that in 1972 it was able to move to the Felt Forum at the famed Madison Square Garden where, within two years, it reached 20,000 spectators. (As an eager and enthusiastic beginner, I was one of those lucky spectators at that 1972 show). Even today, several important Martial Arts Hall of Fame events feature a variety of seminars by famous Grandmasters, Champions and Celebrities, but because of their short duration (usually about one hour), they are better classified as “clinics” or demonstrations.

Grand Masters It took almost another decade for the first successful pioneers of Martial Arts seminar to emerge on the scene, and although several excellent Teachers started hosting local seminars at their schools, the first to achieve national (and later international) prominence were known as “The Big Three”: Wally Jay, Remy Presas and George Dillman. Their original format offered participant the unique opportunity to train in Small Circle JuJitsu, Modern Arnis and Ryukyo Kempo in one exciting seminar. Of course, these three exceptional Grandmasters also conducted their own separate, individual seminars and were extremely successful, (I consider myself fortunate to have been able to train with all of them, numerous times). Following “The Big Three”, dozens of other Martial Arts Pioneers, famous Champions, and renowned Grandmasters have taken their place of honor in the “seminar circuit”, promoting their arts / styles, sharing their knowledge, (and often even entertaining!), earning, in the process, the admiration of millions of students around the world. In the early 1980s, as a Martial Arts school owner and Instructor, I was attending several seminars a year to expand my knowledge. I would travel far and wide to be able to meet and learn from some of the great Martial Arts teachers of the time. Some of those legends and pioneers I had admired for a long time and I would welcome any opportunity to train with them. In fact, even when their art / style was not suitable for me, or I disagreed (privately!) with some of their techniques or their philosophy, I can honestly say that I have learned something every time and I have never regretted attending a seminar. I always believed them to be a smart investment and a productive and valuable experience. When it became possible for me to actually host some seminars, I eagerly did so. It gave me great pride to be able to bring several prominent Teachers and famous Grandmasters such as Michael Wollmershauser, Kwang Sik Myung and In Sun Seo, to my schools and to my students. Those seminars were great learning experiences, and those special times have left me with many fond memories. As with most other teachers, my “professional” seminar teaching begun modestly, at a local level, when I started gaining some recognition in the martial arts community for having introduced, in my Taekwondo schools, what at that time was the not-so-well-known art of Hapkido. It was at

this point that I was asked to initially conduct some demonstrations and later actual seminars for other Taekwondo schools and associations. Two years later, after being featured in a cover article in Taekwondo Times magazine in March 1990, I started receiving requests for seminars, both nationally and internationally. And that was the happy beginning of a new, exciting and rewarding phase of my Martial Arts journey. Although not an absolutely exact count, I have calculated that over the last 30 years I have conducted around 650 Combat Hapkido seminars in the USA and 22 other countries around the world. While that number may not be the all-time record, it certainly rates as one of the highest in the industry (and I am very proud of it!). I have taught seminars to small groups (25 to 50 participants) and to large groups (100 to 250 participants); in all kinds of venues (besides Martial Arts schools) including: outdoors, on the beach, in gyms, in Churches’ recreation rooms, on Military Bases, at Police Academies, on the stage of theaters, in ballrooms, and even in parking lots. And because I had been so strongly impressed and inspired by the old “Big Three” model mentioned above, I too created several interesting and original formats such as the “Double Impact” and “Triple Impact”, where I have shared the seminar stage with exceptional Teachers of different arts / styles including Bill Wallace, George Dillman, Carlson Gracie, Jr., Julius Melegrito, Hock Hochheim, Willem de Thouars, and Graciela Casillas. That formula has been so successful that it was expanded to also feature any combination of our Combat Hapkido Headquarters staff Instructors: Trina Pellegrini, Mark Gridley and David Rivas. Finally, I cannot neglect to mention to have had the great honor (and the rare experience) to have conducted handto-hand combat seminars for Allied Troops in actual war zones (Afghanistan in 2006 and Iraq in 2008). Possibly the proudest accomplishments of my career. One of the interesting aspects of teaching so many seminars in so many different places, is that it has given me the opportunity to meet tens of thousands of martial arts students and instructors of different backgrounds, ages, and abilities; and that experience has helped me become a better teacher by constantly pushing me to refine my seminar skills.

Occasionally, I still encounter martial arts students and Instructors who are skeptical or dismissive concerning the benefits of attending seminars. They offer the argument that “you can’t really learn anything at a seminar of a few hours” or that they “learn all they need to know from regular classes at their school”. As a final excuse, they may also invoke the “financial” issue, claiming that the seminar fee, travel expenses, and the time spent, are basically a waste; they see no value to justify their investment. Of course, I could not disagree more strongly. I have been a very outspoken advocate and promoter of Martial Arts seminars since the beginning of my career. And not just because I obviously benefit from conducting them. As I have already mentioned, long before I started teaching seminars, I used to attend many of them and also enjoyed hosting them. In fact, even during my previous career in the Law-Enforcement field, I frequently attended seminars, workshops, lectures and training sessions in police / security related subjects such as: Criminal Investigations, Interrogation Techniques, Executive Protection, Anti-Terrorism, Firearms, Narcotics and Fraud. I eagerly attended those seminars even when a particular topic was not directly related to my current position at the time or to my specific duties. I considered them all part of my “continuing education” and a valuable investment toward my overall professional growth.

So, what are the most tangible benefit for a Martial Artist in attending seminars? There are several worth mentioning: • Hands-on-Training. Assuming that the seminar is taught by a high-ranking expert of the art / style the students are already studying, they will be exposed to an approach and presentation different to what they are used to receive in class from their instructor. It will express a new depth, intensity, focus and dynamics. This different exposure will re-enforce the students’ excitement, motivation and interest in their art. • Students who are still able to attend seminars taught by the Founder of an art / style are very fortunate as many of them can no longer teach or are no longer with us. It should be readily apparent that there are numerous technical benefits of learning directly from a Founder including: receiving the most accurate original interpretation, subtle nuances of techniques, unique variations, special attributes, advanced applications and hidden details. But there are also other, maybe less practical but just as important, rewards of attending a seminar with a Founder and they involve learning their unique philosophical perspective, the most authentic

Grand Masters history of the system, and having had the honor of meeting a true Martial Arts pioneer. • Attending seminars of different arts / styles than the one being studied is generally called “cross-training”, and it also offers several benefits: becoming a more well-rounded practitioner, developing a more open mind, gaining understanding and appreciation of different fighting methods, increasing your arsenal of techniques, and having the opportunity to train with fellow Martial Artists of different styles. These are just a few of the most obvious benefits, but I believe that they amply demonstrate the value of Martial Arts seminar for serious students and Instructors. I strongly encourage all Martial Artists, regardless of rank, art / style, background and skill level, to attend seminars to train, learn, share, exchange, network, and simply enjoy the experience. As for myself, I will continue to teach Combat Hapkido seminars around the world for as long as I am able to, and I am already training the next generation of “Seminar Leaders” to take my place when the time comes, so that there will be continuity and enduring value for the Martial Arts community. Recent events unfortunately require that I add a postscript to this essay. Due to the current “Coronavirus” global epidemic, I was forced (for the first time in 30 years!) to cancel all our Combat Hapkido seminars for the rest of the year. My staff and I had a total of 32 seminars scheduled for 2020 in the USA, Spain and Finland. Hopefully we will be able to reschedule all of them for 2021. There is no doubt that this unprecedented crises will have a devastating economic impact on the Martial Arts industry internationally, with many schools / gyms / programs, not being able to recover from the forced, prolonged shutdown, sadly closing their doors permanently. However, we are a community of warriors and I am confident that we will survive and re-build on the ruins of this disaster. Our Martial Arts organizations, my staff and I will do whatever we can to help and assist in the recovery of our industry. We will never give-up.

Biography of Shaolin Great Masters Venerable Master Shi Suxi Venerable Master Shi Suxi, Zhang Lao (Zhang Lao 长老 - high degree of Buddhist monk), was one of the most revered monks of the Shaolin Temple and a master of Martial Arts. My master, Grand Master Shi De Yang, was his closest disciple and the one who stood by his side until the last day of his life. In r ecent years, he ser ved as Abbot of Shaolin on an honorary basis, and many of Shaolin’s great teachers today have been his disciples. In this article I've wanted to honor the memory of my Master’s Master so that his life and endeavors can be known and live on in history.

His early years Venerable Master Shi Suxi was born on Saturday, September 27, 1924 (the twenty-ninth day of the eight month of the year of the rat) as Geng Shuanzhu (Geng Shuan Zhù, 耿栓柱)) in a very poor family in Chengguan, village outside Dengfeng, no very far from the Shaolin temple. His father was a bookseller who had a very good relationship with the monks of the Temple, from whom they used to receive help whenever they needed it. He did not have the chance of meeting his mother because she died half a year after he was born. After this event, and with nowhere to go, he joined his cousins who were begging around for food, often intimidated and humiliated; in those days he had no other choice. When Geng Shuanzhu was eleven years old, his father died frozen in a straw hut. the Dharma. It is said that when Zhenxu saw little Geng Shuanzhu, he called him and said: “The self-cultivation of nature is merit; the self-cultivation of the body is virtue. You will become a Buddha in Shaolin." Young Shuanzhu entered the Shaolin temple in 1936 at the age of twelve, after Master Shi Zhenxu ordained him as a young novice monk (xiǎoshāmí 小沙弥) in the temple; he was bestowed with the name of Shi Suxi (Shì Sùxǐ 释素喜) of the thirty generation of the Shaolin temple, which means "always happy". In 1941, at the age of seventeen, he was sent to the Temple of the White Horse (Báimăsì 白马寺) in Luoyang, to study Buddhism with Venerable Master Shi Ming Dao. In 1942, being eighteen, he was sent to Xian City, Shanxi Province, to receive all of the monk precepts at DaXingshan Monastery. After undergoing full ordination in 1945, he retur ned to the Shaolin Temple to continue his Buddhist study and practice. He lived a simple life, like every Shaolin monk, under the guidance of his teacher, studying every day the "Three Treasures" of Shaolin (Shaolin sānbǎo 少林三宝), Martial Arts (Wu 武), Medicine (Yi 医) and Chan Buddhism (Chan 禅). In 1960, Ven. Suxi was selected and sent to Beijing to obtain a formal education at the Buddhist University in Beijing. After graduating, he returned to the Shaolin monastery, where he continued his Kung Fu

studies. At that time, he invited many Chinese boxing masters of various styles to share and compare their skills, in order to develop and spread the Shaolin culture.

Preservation of Shaolin heritage Between 1959 and 1961, the town of Dengfeng experienced a three-year drought. With nothing to eat, many monks returned to secular life. Only Venerable Suxi and 16 other monks remained to guard the Shaolin temple. As the drought situation worsened the monks began to leave one by one. But Venerable Suxi and a few others stayed on. During the period of the Cultural Revolution (1966-1976) many Red Guards broke in to destroy the Buddhist statues in the temple and to burn the Sutras. At that time Venerable Suxi was seen as a large landowner, and along with Venerable Shi Dechan (1907-1993) and Venerable Shi Xingzheng (1914 - 1987), were taken out of the Shaolin temple almost every day to suffer public criticism and humiliation for their "crimes", at the hands of the Red Guards. In order to protect cultural relics from future damage and loss, Venerable Shi Dechan distributed a portion of the sutras and ancient inscribed tablets to each of the monks, and ordered them to memorize them completely, including the calligraphic style used to write them and their dates. Everything had to be accurately memorized. After reciting and memorizing, monks then buried the texts and the statues.

Health problems and last years When he was thirty-one years old he suffered a stroke and was later diagnosed with Parkinson's disease. In 1983, at the age of sixty, he began to fall ill, losing some movement and coordination in his legs and feet, but he persisted in his Shaolin Kung Fu practice. He even met with Venerable Master Dechan and other masters to form the "Shaolin Martial Arts Research and Systematization Group", in order to rescue, organize and transmit the Shaolin Kung Fu. This project gave rise to several printed publications for the preservation of the style and its dissemination. In 1987, Venerable Master Shi Xingzheng, abbot of the Shaolin temple, passed away. Six years later, in 1993, Abbot Shi Dechan passed away as well. At that moment, the Shaolin temple had established a Regulatory Commission that Venerable Suxi was going to lead. However, in the 1990s his health began to deteriorate and he had to resign. He spent the following years practically in a wheelchair, always helped by his disciples and surrounded by the affection and love of the people. Venerable Master Shi Su Xi, passed away at 11:20 a.m., on a Wednesday March 8, 2006 (the 9th day of the 2nd month of the year of the dog) at the age of eighty-two years. Venerable Master Shi Su Xi was one of the most respected Shaolin monks, and the teacher of most of the monks of the “de” and “xing” generation of the Shaolin temple. He spent more than seventy years dedicated to the protection and propagation of the Shaolin tradition. Today his pagoda, which is one of the most visited, is located just a few kilometers from the Shaolin Temple in the famous pagoda forest, a place that he himself would defend years ago from the Red Guards. One of his memorable phrases before passing away was: "Shaolin is chan, no quan" (Shaolin shì chán, bushi quan 少林是禅不是拳) indicating that, above Martial Arts, the philosophy of chan (zen) would always be present. Hwa Rang Do Being Right Vs. Doing Right (part 1) By: Grandmaster Taejoon Lee

Recently, a former student after being away for over six years, creating a successful business and now getting married to raise a family has returned to continue his training in the hopes of become a Hwa Rang Do Instructor. He has chosen to do so, realizing that Hwa Rang Do will offer him the best means of being the best version of himself as a husband and a father. He hopes one day he can pass on the benefits of his training to his children. He is also helping me to launch an online platform for me to be able to teach online globally, becoming the first student learning remotely from the East Coast of the United States. In the process of working on the Hwa Rang DoÂŽ Global Initiative, he asked me, â€œWhat type of students have you seen in your teaching career that succeeds in the Hwa Rang Do Program and what type fails?â€? I replied that there are no single type of person that succeeds or fails. Many I thought would do well ended up quitting; many whom I felt would not last went on to become good instructors. However, there is a common trait, which I have noticed in teaching and observing students for over forty years, that distinguishes the ones who quit from the ones who persevere.

ere are my observations. Of course there are many factors that can be considered, but this seems to be a main underlying shared character trait; the desire to “be-right” vs. the desire to “do-right”. This state of being seems to overrule any common sense or reasoning. It is in fact the measure and reference in which all observations, experiences, and knowledge are processed. It is what shapes and defines one’s perception of the self and the world that they live in.

The person who desires to be right is not interested in understanding the truth, but is interested in only selfpreservation, self-image, and how they are perceived by others. On the other hand, the person who wants to do what is right seeks to understand what is the best way and is constantly questioning themselves whether they are doing what is right or not. The person who desires to “be right” is also uncertain, but rather than seeking for greater understanding, they become myopic and stubborn to their opinion.

The difference is rooted in fear. No one person can know all things and is in doubt of many things. Therefore, doubt is not the problem to a healthy, strong, confident mind; it becomes a barometer for truth. So when in doubt, they respond by asking questions, studying harder, practicing more, until they become confident enough to take the necessary actions to fulfill their desired end result. However, the one who is fearful and insecure responds to doubt in a very different way and it is how we respond to self-doubt that distinguishes the “be-righters” to the “do-righters”. To the “berighter”, they react emotionally as what they fear the most is being wrong and this reactive behavior, originating out of fear is completely irrational as fear becomes all consuming. They have fortified themselves in a castle of glass built on a foundation of shifting sand. As the sand shifts, it reveals cracks in the glass wall and one small crack can bring down the entire fortress of lies. Hence, they spend their entire lives in mending the cracks, defending the fort, protecting their home, never realizing that their safe haven is built on unstable ground, as they

Hwa Rang Do are too afraid to ever look underneath. Therefore, they must always be right or they risk their entire world falling apart. Often, we mistake the “be-righters” as strong, domineering people, but in truth they overcompensate their weak and fragile internal self with a hard exterior, which is an extroverted “be-righter”. They are like a hermit crab, which above all things desire to hide, to be protected, and only venture out when it is certain that it will be safe. Then, once in a while, it takes a risk due to extraneous factors and musters enough courage on its own to venture outside of the shell. In doing so, it gets attacked and is injured. It rushes quickly back into the shell, proving that it was right, that the external world is a dangerous place,

Hwa Rang Do filled with pitfalls and others who want to harm them, never again venturing out of its shell. Actually, the hermit crab never leaves its shell. The only time it does is when it loses its shell in a storm, outgrows it, or when the shell breaks, and when they do, they will quickly find another stronger, bigger shell to hide in. In fact, if a “be-righter” is found out and his/her glass castle, their world is destroyed through some traumatic experience, and if they survive it they will quickly construct another castle to hide even more strong than before. A person once told me that she wouldn’t mind being a Mafia Boss, but the only thing, which was stopping her, was the possibility of going to jail. If going to jail were not an option, then she would be a Mafia Boss. Of course, this makes no sense at all, but that is how an irrational mind works. In essence, she wants to do the crime without ever having to do the time. The reason a person goes to jail is because they have done something bad, wrong, immoral, broken the law, and imprisonment is the punishment for their wrongdoing. However, many people who are criminals continue to break the law and are repeatedly imprisoned, never learning their lesson. Wanting to be a Mafia Boss reveals that she would kill, murder, and steal if she could and the only reason that she is not doing that is because she’s afraid of getting caught and imprisoned. One should not kill, murder, and/or steal because it is immoral, because it is wrong, it is evil, not because you risk going to jail. People like this have not learned the moral lesson and in fact are amoral. Furthermore, if the only thing that’s stopping them is getting caught and doing jail time, then it is highly probable that they will commit acts of immorality and break the law if given enough means and power. The extraverted “be-righter” then must argue and prove that they are right at all costs. They are very controlling of others and will lash out at anyone who harms or disturbs their world, their way of living. They are highly vindictive, especially to those whom they have shared their vulnerable self and in extreme cases, they will do anything possible to destroy that person. Whether they are in the right or wrong has no bearing on their actions, as there is no moral compass, but only self-righteousness.

When most people hear the word Kyusho, or the words Pressure Points, it is one of two things that come to mind ... Self Defense or a healing modality such as Acupuncture or Massage Therapy. In each instance, they are correct. There are some who focus mostly on the self defense aspect and other whose focus is more into the healing. I personally know of several people who trained with me and became so excited about manipulating the Pressure Points for self defense that they enrolled in Acupuncture classes, Massage Classes and Chiropractic Classes. Each area of study requires extensive focus on the mechanics of the body and how the practitioner can "assist" the body into healing itself. This is not an end all be all and each patient must be accountable for their health and lifestyle habits. This video will focus on how we can use the same 5 points for both healing and self defense. This is where knowledge of anatomy, basic principles of motion, and developing a sensitive touch come into play. Pressure Points have multiple uses for both health and self defense and can be a great complement to one another. For each to be effective, the practitioner must develop a quiet, relaxed mind, which can assess each situation to hopefully bring about the result desired.

The birth of golden balls Sit up straight. Highlight the pulse in each of the five fingers of two hands and in the middle of the palms. Fingertips begin to merge into one pulse in the middle of the palm. Hands are relaxed, the hands are on their knees palms up. (Then hands are placed on top of each other to get one ball.) In this case, you need to get two balls. Achieve appearance in the palms of gravity and warmth (sensation 1), gradually developing into a feeling of warm and viscous mass on your palms and, at the same time, making up one palm with one hand (feeling 2). Focusing the eyes on the tip of the nose, cause now there is a "sensation" of the pulse, gravity and heat (sensation 3). After a while, there is a glow effect, a luminous dot appears on the nose. If the three previous sensations have reached sufficient strength, the luminous point begins to move to the forehead along the back of the nose. Narrowing the look The sight rushes away into a small object. You need to focus on it to such an extent that the surrounding objects lose a clear outline, and the object in question becomes more clear and visually closer to you.

Attention training Attention is a certain part of the "light of consciousness". There are three kinds of attention: first, second and third. The first attention is taken by the slave, this is the attention of our consciousness. The second attention is perceived by the unknown, this is the attention of our unconscious (emotions, will, intuition). The third attention perceives the incomprehensible, it is included in the ordinary person, usually before death, and in the warrior - in extreme situations. The third attention can be called internal fire, the manifestation of inner personal power. Concentration of attention is the ability to focus on one object for a long time (without interference and with increasing interference). With increasing attention span, there is stability of attention. By combining a high degree of stability of attention with concentration, you can keep as much as you want the point of assembly of perception in this or that place of the energy circuit of consciousness (the subconscious of the brain). For the active transition of TCB from one position to another, it is necessary to switch attention quickly and clearly. The ability to illuminate a beam of attention of several objects is called the amount of attention. Entering the state of increased consciousness (subconsciousness, superconsciousness) is a practice of increasing the amount of attention. The distribution of attention is also of great importance. The ability to distribute attention makes it possible to switch from one object to another without difficulty, and also to return the TCB to its normal state. All this expands our consciousness. The attention is divided into voluntary and involuntary. Involuntary (first attention) allows a person to observe from the side, to glance at objects without evaluation. Arbitrary (second attention) - to show interest in the object, tracking, assessing its manifestations, try to find interesting in the object. Sight and hearing are the means to listen and see (look, perceive) attention "from within" (from the essence of a person). Consciousness deceives us, so we should try to see what is in the description of our picture of the

world, to accept consciousness by the object not as it really is.

Exercises with points All exercises are performed for 5 minutes. (The diameter of the point is 3.5-4 cm.) Exercises with a black dot on a white sheet. Gather, relax, arms and legs not to cross. Relax eyes, "look" from inside the head. 1. Look at the point for 5 minutes. Involuntary attention (first attention). 2. All external stimuli, heard or caught by the edge of the eye in exhalation, try to direct to the black point. Create an energy flow that flows from the eyebrow, and move the stream in a spiral forward from yourself. (In order for the power flow to be powerful, it's important to remember the power from below, from the Earth, and the power from above.) Mentally connecting to these energosilovym streams, imagine their entry (spiral movement) in his body on the spine and through the head from above. These flows are merged into the interbrow: they are added and sent from the eyebrow to the black point (Figure 33).

Take control of your attention. 4. Try, looking at the point, to split it. When we look at the point, a kind of light blue halo forms around it. Build next to the black point is exactly the same, just a light bluish color. When the point disappears, return to the first point. Exercise with two black dots on a white sheet. Place two black dots 4 cm in diameter on a white sheet 5 cm apart. 1. Look immediately at two points before the appearance of light blue halos. 2. ccording to the inter national (World Kuoshu definition Federation) external styles are recognisable by exerting high force of the body extremities and internal styles by exerting force with the body, that is for example with the torso. At tournaments, by the way, internal styles are granted a higher time limit for forms, because they are performed at a slower pace. This is not really fair, I find and neither does my sifu, Dr. Chiu Chi Ling. To use his exact words: â€œHung Gar has always had a soft and hard side to it. There is not only the tiger, but also the crane. The training

programme clearly starts with the harder side of our style (depending on the age of the student). All in all, however, we know everything. There is a lot of “Tai Chi” in our Hung Gar Kung Fu. Unfortunately, only few people reach that level, which is why the majority of people think that Hung Gar is solely a hard, external style. If tournaments were categorised from scratch our Kung Fu would be allowed to start in the internal and external categories.” However, it wouldn’t make much sense to change the world of traditional martial arts from one day to the next. My intention though is the same as the one of my sifu, i.e. to show how complete our system is and that it does not only contain the hard side. The way to the goal leads through training and promoting eager students who go beyond the level of “pure hardness” and get to know “the crane”. Thus, I would like to prove what my teacher has been claiming for a long time; apart from the internal work in the sense of Qi Gong, which is also an important part of the training, but more on that later.First of all, the question is: How did this “hard, external” style of our style come about in the first place? history of the traditional martial arts, one notices that at the time of the famous Shaolin monastery in Northern China the training went “from internal to external”. That means that they particularly worked with the inner attitude, character and especially with physical techniques. The result was that after many years of training, at some point, “all of a sudden”, the student was able to fight very well with the acquired techniques he hadn’t previously known what to do with (apart from a healthy mind and body). Political changes, a need for resistance fighters and the basic wish to be able to efficiently defend oneself as quickly as possible led the monks and Kung Fu masters to think that the training had to lead more quickly to efficient fighting ability. The training, back then already at the Southern Shaolin monastery, was “reversed” and physically hard training and techniques, which could be quickly learned, were given priority and built the legendary reputation of the invincibility of the monks. Many styles that are popular because of their effectiveness in fighting originate directly or indirectly from this tradition of the Southern Shaolin monastery. Students of my schools know that it is still like that today. The “mental, soft” part hasn’t been lost at all. On the contrary, it is more important than ever. In the training programme, however, it has been shifted to the back, where it is taught at a later point. I would like to emphasise though that we are talking about the first stages of the education (white, yellow, orange, green belt). After that the student already realises that not only rigid, hard techniques lead to the result. With the completion of the basic school (black belt, 1st Dan) at the latest, the student more and more deals with the skilful change of both sides. Hard and Soft. It goes without saying that the part of the character and the training of the mind are omnipresent. Some students ask me just

what is meant by “Qi Gong” and whether it wouldn’t make our style an “internal style”. One has to be cautious with such relations. What I have mentioned in the beginning was a reference to the definition of the World KuoShu. Or let us say, to what the eye can recognise from the outside. When I teach my instructors and when I talk about activating the “inner power” or about how the student should concentrate on the “inner work”, then, it is not about the movement of the torso or the hips, but about the focus, the concentration, the mind. Everyone knows that, generally, whenever we concentrate on something and when we also invest mental energy, it often turns out better. It may be a sporting performance or the writing of a test etc. The old Kung Fu masters understood this long ago and incorporated it into the martial arts where this part of the Hung Gar Kung Fu, until today, has one objective in particular, i.e. to make the techniques even more efficient and destructive. Here we are talking about the five internal aspects of our system: Qi (energy), Ging (strength), San (mind), Daam (courage) and Sik (knowledge). - Qi (also “Chi” or “Hei”) means the power of the thoughts, the focus, which can contribute to the promotion of health but also to the mobilisation of additional force in fighting situations. - Ging means the developed, honed power of the practitioner. By means of repetition of exercises and control of the Qi, one can create Ging, which in turn means very close, efficient power.

- San means (clear) mind, which is visible in the eyes, the voice and the overall quality of life of the practitioner. Daam means courage, or better still, “the absence of fear”, which helps the practitioner to cope with dangerous situations and to believe in his or her success. - Sik means knowledge and the circumstances. It’s about knowing oneself and the opponent(s) better. Knowledge means security and the ability to apply lear ned information in order to reach a goal. To sum up, the original Hung Gar Kung Fu of our family, according to the definition, is neither an external nor an internal style. It is both and offers one of the most complex and most complete, if not the most complete, system - in the mental area as well. When we talk about inner work in our Mo Gwoon (“war room”, classroom) we particularly mean the aspect, which cannot be seen by the unpracticed eye, i.e. the five inner aspects. With the growth of my school and the coming Dan holders among my students, more and more people are going to see what real Hung Gar looks like and that hard and soft, inner and outer, in accordance with the philosophy of Yin and Yang, go hand in hand and are inseparable if we are talking about the real, traditional Hung Gar of the KUNG FU SCHOOL MARTIN SEWER.

Sifu David Delannoy presents his second work, focused on Jeet Kune Do and Self-Defense and built like a puzzle. It highlights and puts into practice some very important points in self-defense, such as the three phases of an aggression, body movement and shifting, opening of the visual field, response to an aggression according to law, physical destruction, vital areas, etc. With respect to the doing away of the physical threat, one of the essential principles of the Philippine martial arts is applied: the overriding of the attacking member and the importance of immediate responding to an aggression immediately when they hit us. Our response to aggression is simply proportional and immediate to the attack. Then, we configure the puzzle by adding elements depending on the development of the situation. Sifu Delannoy explains in detail the vital points and essential areas, the pinching, how to protect against a boxer, displacements and visual field, protections and destructions against simple attacks, reactions to strangulations, grips and headbutting, how to use the attackerâ€™s body as a shield, defenses against stick and knife attacks, the use of everyday objects to defend ourselves. In case of aggression, respect for life, lucidity and survival instinct are necessary parameters that make you make good decisions.

Training Changes Behavior “Training must change your behavior, make you smarter, faster, stronger and harder to kill.”

“Can I out-think, can I out-mentally maneuver (cognitively overmatch) my opponent. If I can’t out-think them, then I may be a victim. Training has to have a cognitive component.” —Greg Williams, Director of Training & Innovation: Arcadia Cognerati, Left of Greg Podcast, Episode 1 So much of our lives are controlled by an over-reliance on technology.

Training has been defined as “the practical application of educational material,” by Greg Williams of Arcadia Cognerati (https://arcadiacognerati.com), a U.S. Based Training conglomerate based in Colorado.

Arcadia Cognerati Arcadia Cognerati is a small, agile team of Human Behavior Pattern Recognition & Analysis experts who believe that risk should be mitigated, not managed. We all train, and we all have goals that fit out training regimen, our pursuit, and all of us have one tool in common – our brains. Greg says that all training should be “Inspirational, memorable, and should also create spirals within our minds” – that unique ability to be creative, to engage one’s abilities in critical thinking skills, (if/then) scenarios.

When you apply advanced critical thinking skills, you will use visualization - scenario training to enhance your training. This is one skill that I learned to develop many years ago, and while in an environment that required critical thinking and quick decision-making skills, with the ability to physically engage when necessary, and without hesitation.

There were several aspects to consider – and therein was the conundrum. I’d learned through my martial arts training, that questioning every possible application of skill was impossible – the “What if?” that we all find ourselves in at one time or another. I knew what my needs were – I needed something that I couldn’t even define at the time, and I needed it right now!

I started to learn from resources that seemed to be farther and farther away from my martial arts training. Along the way, I discovered the concept of visualization. “Well, that doesn’t seem like it’s too useful – seems to be more like daydreaming and fantasizing to me!” It turned out to be one of the best tools I have ever picked up and used.

“All humans will repeat behaviors when given the choice. Being able to read human emotions gives the operator the ability to predict what will likely happen next.”

Brian Marren, VP of Operations, and host of the Left of Greg Podcast says this:

What’s the “so what? What’s in it for me? Why do I need this?” factor in the material being presented to this class. My bottom line is that I need to understand so that I know how to apply it conceptually.” When looking at any training, ask yourself – “How is this useful to me?”

Visualization Is Training:

You are learning to train your mind. My methodology was simple: It was never negative; it was always with a positive outcome for me. I would look at an aggressor and visualize the best way to overcome his abilities. It was never “can I?” but always “how will I?”

“You need training that’s going to enhance your ability to make those hard decisions when the alarms are sounding.”

Training vs. Education:

The skillset that Arcadia Cognerati can give you is based on some very simple logic: “The difference is that training changes behaviors. Education passes knowledge. If you can’t change the behavior, that is NOT training.” According to Greg, good trainers use these three things:

Cognitive Task Analysis:

[1] As trainers, we need to understand what it is that we are trying to train. [2] We need to know that there is a need for that training. [3] What specific skills do we wish to pass along?

Enabling Learning Objectives:

What pieces are essential to getting that core task across to the student?

Terminal Learning Objectives:

[1] What is it that we want the student to take away?

[2] As trainers, we need to transfer a skill to those students.

[3] Those skills need to be tangible skills – skills that they didn’t know before the training, then after the training they did know.

In Greg’s Combat Hunter program, developed for the USMC, he’d put together an observation technique: “Our algorithm is simple: Baseline + Anomaly = Decision. Anytime you have 3 or more anomalies you need to make a decision. (Obviously if the anomaly is strong enough you don’t have to wait for 3.) The algorithm can be broken down this way: Baseline – what is normal in this environment or scenario? Anomalies – what doesn’t fit or what is missing from the baseline? As an example, watch for body language and physical cues.” This can all be stretched across a timeline – and again is defined by Greg as Left of Bang (pre-event), Bang (moment

of act), and Right of Bang (post-event.) Greg also defines anomalies in two states: Above the baseline are defined as indicators that are there that should not be there, and Below the baseline are defined as indicators that aren’t there that should be there. It’s a great tool for everyday use. It’s all tied into observation skills, and it’s universal – you can do this in any environment, in any culture, anywhere in the world – it’s that universal. Greg teaches one simple concept: All decisions must be legal, moral, and ethical. His teaching relies on science and human history to backup the methodology that they employ.

Profiling:

Profiling as used in their training “has nothing to do with human pedigree or lineage, but everything to do with how humans interact as a species. Using context and relevance and measuring against a baseline anywhere in the world, the profiler can make a moral decision, a legal decision and an ethical decision. It’s the first non-material solution that up-armors the brain.”

Cody Bandars, trainer, describes it this way: “information in the human terrain is there for the taking.”

Arcadia Cognerati Greg continues: “clusters of cues are orbiting us 24 hours a day, everywhere that we go. When we had to rely on reading those environmental cues we were much more in tune with our personal safety and security. We’ve devolved. Those skills have retarded over time because we haven’t used them.”

“If you can outthink a human, if you can predict their next likely move, you can save lives on the battle space.” Mindset is everything.

Reality-based Training:

While discussing a shoot, no-shoot scenario where one chair in a room was labeled ‘cover’ and an identical chair next to it was labeled ‘concealment’ Greg expressed his thoughts: “Your brain knows bullshit and your brain will call bullshit with that type of training and it will put that into your prefrontal cortex, and it will say, ‘that was really good training, and it’s helpful to a point, but, training for the real event you’ll need to train your brain ‘what would I do in that situation.’” Training needs to be a continuous commitment.

Brian uses this mental rehearsal mantra daily. It’s simple. It wakes up the brain: “Someone may try to kill me today.” That simple statement preloads his survival instincts.

Arcadia Cognerati [04] Humans Won’t Pay Attention Unless They Have To Humans have evolved past being able to detect predatory looks and mission focus without training. This creates an environment where predatory looks and mission focus will allow us to find terrorists, criminals and predators hiding within and among us.

[05] Humans Are Predictable Humans are lazy and they follow simple patterns. These pattern are observable, measurable, repeatable, and can be analyzed and defined to satisfy a legal or professional standard. Science proves that human behavior will likely repeat over and over again unless acted upon by external arousal or influence. When given a number of choices humans will follow the path of least resistance. [06] The Harder Humans Try To Mask or Hide Their True Behaviors, The More Those Behavioral Traits Will Stick Out Deception can be detected, and all criminals, terrorists, or insurgents must use deception to hide in plain sight. Humans lie often, yet they are terrible liars and those deceit cues can be detected when compared against the baseline. [07] Your Brain Hates Divided Attention The more humans engage in polyphasic skills or multitasking, the worse their performance becomes. Especially their cognitive performance!

[08] All Humans Telegraph Their Intentions Unknowingly Your unconscious mind controls your behavior. Anything a human being touches will likely retain a trace of that humans influence. This allows a trained operator to detect subtle ‘signature’ cues to use as artifacts and evidence when prosecuting them or impeaching their testimony,

[09] Cognitive Illusions Can Be Overcome With Training This allows us to determine where a sniper needs to be to shoot us, where an IED needs to be placed to kill us, and how an insider threat will hide in order to betray us. [10] Humans Betray Their Affiliations Unknowingly This allows us to track humans and their relations within a group in order to determine their leadership and structure.

Edited Excerpts from a 30 minute Q&A with Brian Marren & Greg Williams of Arcadia Cognerati:

Q1: From what I have learned from a variety of resources, your program was initially designed for the military, and was originally known as Combat Hunter in the USMC version. Greg was one of four subject matter experts called upon to design a program to help our troops while they were deployed overseas. It reminds me of the process that Law Enforcement went through in the early 1980â€™s when too many officers were dying. During that process data was revealed that changed the face of training forever. I get the feeling that this does the same, and was born of the same ideas. Was this your intent?

A1: Greg: Remarkable, because you tied everything together very succinctly, and so the simple answer is this: I was a martial artist back in the mid to late 70â€™s in Detroit. That really meant something. That was the advent of true, and mine was Japanese martial arts. There were only a few really good practitioners. That was still the days where you walked into a dojo and challenged the other senseis. I mean it was rough and tumble. And one of the things I noticed being a hood-rat was that there were certain patterns of the police in the neighborhoods, so I knew when to ply my trade when the cops werenâ€™t around, I also had a dad that was a Marine and a mom that was German, so they were very detailed oriented, so I found a way to navigate around them.

After I went into the military, I found that the military was all about structure and organization and there were seams and gaps everywhere, and my special knowledge of how to read humans and landscape would allow me to read the military landscape and get through and solve problems based on the sense-making that I had taught myself on the street.

The only good jobs in Detroit were General Motors and cop work. I got into cop work and the first thing I noticed is profiling a cop and profiling a criminal were the same thing, so I created Human Behavior Profiling and was teaching it

to police agencies all over the world. So that, that you saw, and it wasn’t just me and I’m a humble guy, guys like Massad Ayoob and many others were legendary in bringing these street skills to coppers. So I was part of that and then I continued my professional career in teaching and training and the military goes, “hey if that works, would it work for us?” So, out of that was born Combat Hunter. We built programs for the Marines, ASAT for the Army, US Border Patrol, ICE, Customs. Once people see that this is a classic, people go to that. And one cautionary thing: on the shoulders of giants. A broken clock is right twice a day. What I did is I assembled a whole bunch of great theories that went back to the 1600’s and said, “This is how to explain those things” and created my own lexicon. So if you run into weird words on Combat Hunter or ASAT, those are words I had to invent because there was no scientific word for it.

Brian: It starts out with that Street Survival, or you called it Edge Courses, right here at Bang for Police. And it looks like to me that Greg went with continuing so deep into human behavior. And what you get is farther and farther ‘Left of Bang’, and you’re 1000 meters out before anyone knows you’re there. It’s the same skill set, it’s done from the advantage of time and distance. You can continue using it right through to ‘at bang’ and ‘after bang.’

Greg: Brian is a martial artist as well. He started out in Aikido in Japanese martial arts as a young kid too. Miyamoto Musashi, very influential in my youth, said, “you win or lose before you ever draw your sword.” And that

fascinated me. How did he know how to read humans? That was a genesis. Funakoshi said “if the nail sticks out, pound it down.” That was amazing to me. That meant baselines and anomalies. So history is full of these examples, I just codified it. Q2: Can you explain the concept of what you teach in terms that anyone can understand?

A2: Greg: I took a nebulous concept and put architecture towards it that anybody, any human can follow. You don’t have to do it all even if you do a little bit because I believe that you’re responsible for your own health and safety and security. Even if you do a little bit you’ll find out that the answers are right there. Just like escalation and de-escalation there’s an answer right there you just have to take time to study it.

A3: Greg: It all started with the martial arts! My martial art was out-thinking the opponent. I did a Boyd’s OODA loop on my martial arts training and said “here’s where you could de-escalate, here’s where you could break this down, and psychological de-escalation telling the person before you fight, I don’t want to fight — how to work that dialogue and stances into suggesting to this person that this isn’t the time and place for this fight. The shortcoming of all of this is that it’s ‘at bang’, and slightly left of bang.”
