About the authorship Most of what is in this book is the result of the notes and drafts taken directly by Shidoshi Jordan Augusto (Yamori Kawazuki) from his Masters, as they were transmitted to me before they left us. As it can be seen, such an introductory chapter as the initial idea of the mythology book took shape and gained consistency by itself, in such a way that we have thought of removing it as a separate piece, without giving up recommending it as a previous reading, to all those who will read it someday. The book on mythology is also on the way, but it will take a little longer than expected, because, like almost everything in the e-bunto, it has turned out to be much more intense and extensive than we would've thought, and its compilation and narration a rather demanding and committed work which we are carrying out little by little. Of course, what appears in this book is not everything that there is (far from it!), but everything in this book is part of what there is. We have reviewed some old texts and materials to give them more clarity and added others to better frame certain themes. All this is but an infinitesimal part of what the e-bunto involves, but I believe that so far, it had never been made a revision and basic rearrangement as wise as the one presented here by my Master and I, and I am including him, despite the fact that his authorship does not appear on the cover, because nothing that has been written here would have never been possible without his constant diligence and assistance. The secrets By secrets we understand specific knowledge of keys that open doors into the invisible world. However, the main secret in spirituality is available to everyone, and it is the mix of deep gratitude, sincerity and dedication, including the ability to strive and sacrifice ourselves in the development of our personal path. All this must happen beyond any mystification and only as the result of a commitment freely and honestly acquired with ourselves first, and then with our own chosen path. Contrary to other spiritual paths, the e-bunto does not proselytize or search for devotees. E-bunto is not religion, it is something much more like a science that uses empiricism in its analyzes. Its philosophy even avoids simple advice, considering it an interference in the lives of others and the implications that it can bring on to ours. Much less of course indoctrinate anyone. Quite the contrary, being initiated into the e-bunto is a privilege that is not acquired, but through the kindness and acquiescence of a Shidoshi, who takes up the job and accepts the commitment to do it. Therefore, even wanting to be initiated, the seeker, unlike other Ways, does not depend on himself to advance.

Somehow the e-bunto chooses us as much as we choose it, although we don't have the last word. Some Shidoshi even deny initiation if Tengu does not specifically approve it in oracles. Others even ask if "their hand" is good for the mission and there is no other indicated. Respect in true spirituality is ethical, not cosmetic, as my teacher often repeats. Earning the privilege of getting our teacher's attention is a rare fortune that one must cultivate throughout life. Keeping "the fountain" always clean is the job of every good e-bunto student. There are innumerable factors surrounding the study of the e-bunto. Each of us will experience it in a different way, but it will always confront our vision of the world and of ourselves, since there is no evolution or growth, without change. What we think of the e-bunto when having the first contact with it, bears little resemblance to what it ends up being and meaning over the years, especially since we have changed substantiallyâ€Ś so that, as the Zen proverb says, "the mountain, after passing through it ... continues being, the mountain ..." Nothing in our lives, however, can ever be the same, after witnessing the strength and the mysteries of the invisible that the e-bunto reveals to us, by opening our eyes to the magnificent and terrifying network of energies and tensions that govern a reality as dreamy as that of the Matrix, in which we consciously or unconsciously decided to live. Ignorance, when it's just "not knowing", simply requires effort to be overcome, but when it's an accepted option, the one that implies not "wanting to know", it has no remedy and it usually dominates our lives, like a form of arrogance, which will always lead us to choose the wrong paths. The path of the e-bunto is not easy, nor is it for many. I am writing these lines during the coronavirus crisis in the spring of 2020, and these days we spend a lot of time thinking about our loved ones (family, wife, boyfriend, children, and friends). For most people, their own family is important, and it is often said that blood is thicker than water which is certainly true. But strong friendships are also important and make us happy and healthy. We do not need any research or studies to prove this. At the same time, like Mitsuyo Maeda mor e than 100 years ago, many people today must leave their homes, the place where they grew up and their families live. In such a situation one is happy to find some likeminded people. Gracie Jiu-Jitsu is not only a great way to meet new people on the mat, but we also get to know a person much more closely than we might think during the training. We spend a lot of time with our GJJ colleagues and share many things with them in a very intense way, completely independent of age, gender, religious interests, political views, etc. Not only can they take away the fear of uncertainty, but deep friendships can also develop, which is doubly valuable.

lder people and all those who have already lost someone in their lives know this very well. It is indeed important to have people around you who you can depend on when it counts. And for some people such friendships are even more important than their own family. So, joining a Gracie Jiu-Jitsu school not only gives you the opportunity to meet new people, but can also help you reorient yourself and adapt to a new life situation. Continually reorienting yourself and adapting to new situations is also a key competency in the strict technical sense of the term to progress in Gracie Jiu-Jitsu - the parallels of Gracie Jiu-Jitsu to everyday life are indeed many and varied. Regular Gracie Jiu-Jitsu training will positively influence your daily life in many ways. At work or when going out we also get to know a lot of people, but rarely with the same intensity. Because during a training session we focus all our thoughts on the moment, leave no room for distraction and are there with heart and body. We are fully present in the moment and share it with our training partners, which is always a very intense experience. So, I think it is also a contradiction in terms to be a Gracie Jiu-Jitsu teacher and at the same time unapproachable.

Perhaps from a traditional perspective, this is different in other martial arts. But most of the older Gracie Jiu-Jitsu teachers that I have had the opportunity to meet over the last thirty years have remained on the Tatame among their students until their last breath. Those who were forced to retire for health reasons and therefore hung up their Gi and belts usually stayed away from the scene completely and were hardly ever seen in the dojo, and certainly not with the sternly distant gaze of the gray eminence in the background. Gracie Jiu-Jitsu teachers gain the trust and attention of their students by supporting and encouraging them to follow their own paths. As teachers, we do this best by setting a good example and always seeing ourselves as students again. We support our students not only in good times, but we also stand by them in difficult times. However, we should always remain objective and professional; we are not gurus or omniscient experts of life, but always have an open ear. Many people talk about respect and friendship, but only halfheartedly adhere to these virtues. A Gracie Jiu-Jitsu teacher who is a true believer, however, needs to live it day in, day out, both on and off the mat.

On the road with Grandmaster Carley Gracie This is because students learn not only by taking part in lessons, but also by observing the behavior of their teachers beyond the mat. That is how I felt with Grandmaster Carley Gracie. If you ever can meet him and perhaps attend a class with him, you will see that he is the same open and warm person on the mat and outside the dojo. He always welcomes everyone, no matter if black belt wearer or absolute beginner, with a nice smile and a friendly, welcoming attitude. He always emphasizes himself how much he enjoys sharing his knowledge with everyone. So last year our members had the opportunity to learn from a true firstgeneration Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Grandmaster in Zurich, Berlin, and Athens. The way our Grande Mestre Carley teaches the Gracie Jiu-Jitsu of his father and founder of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Carlos Gracie Sr., is unique and so directly to the point that anyone can understand it. From beginner to professional athlete, anyone, regardless of their level of experience, can work with it and learn something new. Not only does he himself have a very solid knowledge of self-defense, but he also knows a lot about competitive sports, be it Vale-Tudo (MMA) or Sports-BJJ. He has trained and coached numerous professional fighters, not least his son and successful BJJ athlete Clark Gracie, the 'King' of Omoplata (leg shoulder-lock).

He corrects the black belt wearers and instructors just like all the other deep graduates. In his opinion, being a Gracie Jiu-Jitsu teacher is an art within an art! Not everyone can become a teacher, you must invest a lot more time to acquire this skill. As one of Carlos Gracie's eldest sons, he was not only trained directly by his father, but later by his uncle HĂŠlio Gracie and his assistant Pedro HemetĂŠrio, who later became my teacher master for many years.

A new alliance for a common and better future To spend time with such a valuable person like Mestre Carley is priceless and inspiring. I keep saying this, but if you ever have the opportunity to train with such true Grandmasters of Gracie Jiu-Jitsu, please don't just focus on the technical aspect, but try to get more out of it by perhaps asking questions about your view of life. We all have our ups and downs in life and therefore in Jiu-Jitsu training. In bad times in life, friends and family help us to overcome them. On the Tatame, it can be your teacher who guides and accompanies you on the Gracie Way. A grandmaster like Carley Gracie can be a true role model in this sense. As far as I am concerned, he has become an important person in my life, inspiring me daily to continue the path of Gracie Jiu-Jitsu for at least another thirty years.

I am incredibly grateful to Grandmaster Carley Gracie that we are now acting as one and the same organization and that together we can teach authentic Gracie Jiu-Jitsu to my partner schools in Europe. Therefore, in the future, you will see the Grandmaster Carley Gracie logo, titled "Carley Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Network Europe," in place of the old Gracie Concept symbol. Master Gianluca Frisan presents a unique project dedicated to Pencak Silat and Kyusho, in collaboration with one of the greatest exponents of this Indonesian art, Mas Denis Brecevaz. Both teachers present the essence of the “Bela Diri” martial aspect of the Nusantara style, and analyze the way in which traditional warfare techniques hide Kyusho’s attacks to the neurological and vascular system. Kyusho is the “Turbo” of every technique, it's that which can exponentially increase the effectiveness and efficiency of our action. Sifu David Delannoy presents his second work, focused on Jeet Kune Do and Self-Defense and built like a puzzle. It highlights and puts into practice some very important points in self-defense, such as the three phases of an aggression, body movement and shifting, opening of the visual field, response to an aggression according to law, physical destruction, vital areas, etc. With respect to the doing away of the physical threat, one of the essential principles of the Philippine martial arts is applied: the overriding of the attacking member and the importance of immediate responding to an aggression immediately when they hit us. Our response to aggression is simply proportional and immediate to the attack. Then, we configure the puzzle by adding elements depending on the development of the situation. Sifu Delannoy explains in detail the vital points and essential areas, the pinching, how to protect against a boxer, displacements and visual field, protections and destructions against simple attacks, reactions to strangulations, grips and headbutting, how to use the attackerâ€™s body as a shield, defenses against stick and knife attacks, the use of everyday objects to defend ourselves. In case of aggression, respect for life, lucidity and survival instinct are necessary parameters that make you make good decisions.

Shaolin Long Hu Jiao Zheng â€œThe fight between the dragon and the tigerâ€? The Shaolin Kung Fu style is broad in theory and techniques. One thousand five hundred years of history have made the style of t h e f a m o u s Te m p l e m o n k s a seemingly endless system for one single life. It would take many lives to master everything. I believe that, faced with such a complete and complex style, we should emphasize and pay close attention to the theory; this of course without neglecting the due practice, indispensable to understand the theory. By this I mean that in the principles and characteristics of Shaolin we can find the answer we are looking for, since studying them will give us a deeper understanding of where we must go within the study of the Shaolin system.

ou may have never heard of "The fight between the dragon and the tiger", or perhaps you have. This concept, so to speak, is not just one more concept, but a key to understand one of the many ways of moving the body. So, it's not just a theory but also a way of training. I am not talking about any exhibition movement that many are used to seeing, it is something much more complex and profound; and yes, the image of the monks acting in shows must be removed. This has absolutely nothing to do with it. The force of Long (dragon) and Hu (tiger) is said to be the best way to

practice Zong Heng He Jing, which translated would be: the combination of horizontal and vertical force. At the same time, it is also a high level for practicing Chinese Kung Fu in general. It requires physical exercise and wisdom. In the tradition of Chinese Martial Arts, people who practice Kung Fu are said to be inspired by the heavens and the earth, and by the phenomena of nature, imitating the ways and mood of animals and feeling the unity of heaven and earth. The practice of dragon and tiger strength derives from the fact that ancient people imitated the movements of dragons (circular, ascending and descending movements, among others) and tigers. of vital importance and calls for the correspondence of the three external and internal harmonies in order to make up the integral force and thus release the greater energy of the body. First of all, you need the basic skills of the three external harmonies (that is, the coordination of shoulder and hip, elbows and knees, hands and feet). Through the idea of the shape of the dragon, the lower and upper sinking of the spine, the swinging force of the left and right sides and the force of the front and rear are practiced, so that the spine is freely stretched. During the practice of Kung Fu, the movement of the spine reveals the level of practice of the warrior. When exercising, the master can connect each section of the spine, transfer the force to the extremities and then return to the spine.

Shaolin

Shaolin The practice of the tiger force is mainly the change of the hip joint. The hip joint is very important in Martial Arts movements; it can boost the movement of the legs and train the strength of the tiger through the combination of hip and legs. Also, it is the central joint of the human body. Any movement of the lower limb is closely related to the hip of the human body, and movement of the upper limb is also transmitted through the hip. By strengthening the practice of the hip and legs, you can make blood flow smoothly. It is more conducive to the use of body strength, and to practice vertical and horizontal force.

â€œThe strength of the tiger is to train the lower part of the body and achieve balance through the advancement and withdrawal of the legs and the coordination of the upper and lower parts. The strength of the dragon is the power to train the upper body with the twisting of the body.â€?

Shaolin Objectively speaking, the tiger strength is for practicing the lower body, and it achieves balance through the advance and withdrawal of the legs and the coordination of the upper and lower sides. The dragon strength is the power to practice the upper bodily section with the twisting of the body. In this way, through the cooperation between the Qi and the breath, the Yin and Yang of the dragon and the tiger will be explored. Objectively speaking, the strength of the tiger is to train the lower part of the body and achieve balance through the advancement and withdrawal of the legs and the coordination of the upper and lower parts. The Good, the Bad and the Ugly! What did you learn from this Pandemic in 2020? Out of every crisis and situation there are lessons to be learnt. Some will ignore, others will adapt, change and move on. Charles Darwin put it best, “It is not the strongest of the species that sur vives, nor the most intelligent that survives. It is the one that is most adaptable to change.” Our world is changing right now, as I write this article (June 2020) and I would like to share my views and thoughts. I am not speaking to you as an expert, rather as a regular guy who has a passion and love for martial arts and life itself. “Know thy self, know thy enemy. A thousand battles, a thousand victories.” Sun Tzu, The Art of War Often students will hear me quote Sun Tzu or paraphrase quotes from great leaders from the past… Study the enemy, understand them, learn their strengths and weaknesses, then we can strategize or make a game plan on how to control, manage and defeat them. Learn and understand your own strengths and weaknesses, how to control your emotions, use fear to your advantage by understanding that adrenaline is how the body warns you of imminent danger. I call this rocket fuel and not fear.

Wing Chun International To be fearful right now, or worse still, for months on end during any situation doesn’t serve you. When you are feeling anxious, your body is pumping you full of adrenaline for the “flight or fight” reaction - that isn’t really happening, you aren’t really escaping and you aren’t really fighting… just negatively affecting your immune system. This is why I personally reject being FEARFUL - full of fear. I prefer to focus on calming my mind, to Fear LESS… The word might be spelt Fearless but it is better to picture it as two words Fear LESS … Today’s main media pumps out FEAR programmes 24/7 on TV, radio and in print. I prefer to switch all this off and choose what I feed my mind. I decide what I listen to instead of a predecided choice… It is called programming for a reason. You only had to see the craziness of people buying toilet paper to understand that they had been programmed. I usually

listen and catch up with what is happening in the world once a month whilst driving, listening to the radio. I switched to once a week during the pandemic as things can change so quickly. The best thing I have done during these trying times, is to focus on my mental and physical health. This is with my Wing Chun training, which boosts the immune system. I believe it was Ghandi who said „The best way to help the poor is not to become poor yourself“ It’s the same with your health. The best way to stop the spread of any virus is to stay healthy. Weakening the immune system through fear will only make you more prone to any disease…

Wing Chun International My 7 Ways to Boost my Im∫mune System 1. Breathing 2. Cold Therapy 3. Meditation 4. Fasting 5. Be Active 6. Sleep 7. Diet 1. Start your day with deep breathing, it doesn’t require much effort and can even be done while still in bed. 30 deep breaths, hold the last breath as long as you can and then repeat 3 times. You will be amazed in such a short space of time, with regular breathing like this you will be able to hold your breath for more than 3 minutes… Give your body more life vitality through deep breathing. 2. There is nothing like a cold shower to wake you and your body up, even if it is for only 30 seconds. Give your body the gift and start every day with a nice cold shower, working up to 3 minutes. I know some of you will say this is crazy, and relatively quickly you will feel and see the benefits. (if you want to, you could finish off with a warm shower)

3. I am a great believer in meditation and for me this is going for a nice walk, 20 minutes or so to a local cafĂŠ, then sitting down and enjoying a nice coffee with my own thoughts. Important for me, is to ignore emails and social media, to switch off from the outside world and learn to listen to my inner voice. Anyone who knows me, knows I also use this time to read. I am a great believer in feeding the mind and this means you will always find me with a good book. I tend to spend an hour reading and planning my day while enjoying my coffee in the morning. 4. Fasting, there are so many studies and reports out there explaining the real benefits. I have been following the fasting life style for the last 2 years and have never looked back. It is an amazing way for your body to heal and rebuild itself. I usually fast from Sunday evening to Tuesday evening so 48 hours and then follow one meal a day for the rest of the week, relaxing at the weekend. Fasting requires no pills, no potions or products so will never become big in the main stream health and fitness industry as there is no profit to be made. The key is not to drink too much water as this can flush your electrolytes out and can make you feel a little sluggish when you break your fast. If thirsty add a little bit of Himalaya salt, half a lemon and a drop of apple cider vinegar. Again do your research before starting any fast.

Wing Chun International 5. Being active, and I am not talking about going to the gym or following a fitness routine. I am talking about moving your body, getting outside with nature, going for long walks or a bike ride with friends or family. Anything other than being stuck behind a computer screen at work or on the sofa watching tv. Of course practicing Wing Chun daily is another amazing way to stay active, whether alone, with friends and training partnersâ€ŚAND if you can do this outside it really has a multiple beneficial effect! 6. Your body needs to repair itself and I do this by fasting and sleeping. When it comes to boosting your immune system, never underestimate the power of getting enough sleep. For me unless I am travelling I never use an alarm clock - unless I am crazy enough to book an early flight and get up at 4am... and then it can take me up to 3 days to recover. When travelling to teach I am guilty of staying up late teaching and training with the guys and I know I need to work on this area a little. As soon as I get home though, I make sure to take time out, go to the beach, chill and catch up on my sleep. 7. The last thing is DIET, another thing that main stream media and the health industry focus on as it is highly profitable. If I am honest I love to be sociable so I eat out way too often, visiting or having friends around is also part of my lifestyle. I know I should eat and follow more of a plant based diet and avoid processed foods. I still class myself as a white belt when it comes to my diet. I will be 52 this year and currently I am researching and studying the areas I can improve in with regards to vitamins and mineral absorption.

After over forty years of teaching and over fifty years of training in the Korean Martial and Healing Art of Hwa Rang Do®, the Way of the Flowering Manhood, founded by my father, Supreme Grandmaster Dr. Joo Bang Lee, I have grown to understand that the most impor tant and noble human character, which is also most rare and difficult to cultivate, hence its immeasurable value is humility. It is deeply rooted in the nature of man, the struggle between son and father, the created and the creator, man and God. It is foundational and lies at the heart of all human endeavors; the desire to achieve greatness, to accomplish what was impossible, to strive to be the best, to be first, to win, to be recognized, remembered and immortalized.

As we get older which equates with maturity, the desire for understanding and truth becomes corrupted with the desires of the world and the need for recognition. We soon realize that we must compete with others in order to get more of that which we desire, whether it be the promise of pleasure, happiness, and love from fame, fortune, and/or power, all the best of what the world can offer becomes our life’s pursuit, our ambition fueled from pride and ego. Furthermore, we learn of fear through pain and suffering, which leads to dedicating our entire lives seeking and creating ways to avoid, overcome, or protect ourselves from the things that we fear the most. Innocence is replaced with fear, wonderment with doubt, joy with pleasure, peace with struggle, harmony with competition, unconditional love becomes conditional, purity becomes contaminated, and strength equates with winning and success while weakness with losing and failure, all for the sake of survival in the world. I immigrated to America from South Korea when I was nine years old in the early 1970s. From that time to my early teens were some of the most turbulent, violent times of my life. You would think that as kids that we would all be innocent and coexist in blissful harmony at play. Far from the truth, I got into fights almost every week and for me, going to school everyday was like going to war. Kids were cruel and merciless without compassion and empathy, which were traits yet to be acquired; they were intolerant to anything that was new, strange or foreign. Either you had to conform to their ways or be ostracized; risk being criticized, picked on, and bullied or stand up and

fight, which even in adulthood never changes. Being raised in a warrior culture and as the heir to Hwa Rang Do, of course I chose to fight! I am not going to go into details of my childhood here, but it is to illustrate that our social conditioning to fit into the world, being accepted by the majority, the status quo as prescribed by the existing social order starts young and surely this is common to all children and not isolated only to me. We are raised and taught that we must be the best amongst our peers and always strive to be the best in order to succeed. And, the only way to succeed is to be willing to achieve it no matter what the cost. One of the main requirements of maturity or adulthood is the understanding that all things have a price. It is easy when we are young, lacking wisdom to stake our life on such idioms when we do not understand lifeâ€™s true worth and its ultimate price. Of course, there lies the problem as it takes maturity to realize childishness and it requires intelligence to recognize foolishness. Recently, I had the opportunity to view a documentary series â€œThe Last Danceâ€?, which chronicled the life of Michael Jordan with the basketball team, the Chicago Bulls, as they made history in winning six NBA World Championships during the 1990s, never losing an NBA Final series in the history of the game. In watching Michael Jordan being interviewed throughout the series, I could not help but to feel some negative tension exuding from his demeanor and tone of his interview. For a man who has accomplished so much during his career, who has become a living legend, a role model for many youths, accomplishing what no other basketball player has ever done and probably the best basketball player in history, a household name throughout the entire world, having amassed incredible fortune with a

Closer to our hearts as martial artists, Miyamoto Musashi was the greatest swordsman of Japan who lived over 400 years ago, being undefeated in presumed 61 duels. He died as a hermit and as legend has it that he

made a sculpture of all the swordsman who died by his blade and each day he prayed for them in a cave until his death. Having been driven to be the best, he set out to prove that he was the best swordsman. How many duels would have satisfied him, how much longer would he have dueled if his health would permit it, and how many more men would he have to kill to be satisfied? Surely, in order to truly be the best, Musashi would have had to win every swordsman in the world and not only in Japan. Just as Jordan or any other person who strives to be the best among all others, they can never be satisfied as the desire to win, to prove that you are the best is in fact not an external motivation but an internal battle, a hunger that can never be fulfilled, a thirst that can never be quenched. The desire to be the best can only be motivated by negative forces rooted in the malady of insecurity, inferiority, and the fears of rejection and mortality. circumstances becomes the billionaire business man never being hungry again; the boy with an abusive father who felt powerless to protect his mother and siblings becomes the heroic soldier never to feel powerless again, and on and on… Michael Jordan became competitive with his older brother to win the affection and approval of his father, which lead him to hate losing in anything he pursued. Miyamoto Musashi’s birth, his early childhood, and even the identity of his parents are a mystery with many theories of his bloodline. The fact is, he was raised by his uncle from the age of seven, leaving him uncertain of his true parents with feelings of abandonment as well as contracting eczema as an infant, giving him an adverse appearance only added to his insecurities. They were both compelled to prove themselves, to be accepted by others, to gain the love of their known or unknown parents. The desire for acceptance, recognition, and approval, especially by our parents, our creator is primal for all human beings deeply rooted in the origin of humankind. And, for those of us who cannot achieve the successes prescribed by society, we make all attempts to accept our

mediocre circumstance, yet always living with the lurking dissatisfaction, hoping, dreaming of something better. Very rare are those individuals who were raised in a home with loving parents, without conflict or struggle, enduring no pain and hardship, protected from the harms of society, producing loving, grateful children who live on to be kind and generous adults fully content with their lives. Whether we achieve greatness and reached the pinnacle or failed in the attempt, we cannot escape the emptiness within, the dissatisfaction of life. Humility is not a choice or a decision that we suddenly wake up with one morning, deciding that yes I am going to be humble, I am going to think of myself lesser, that I am common like everyone else and that no one is better or worse than I am. Actually, this thought of commonality, that I am no better than anyone else is often the root of suicide. The feeling that the individual is not special is surrendering to the idea that there is no purpose for the self and if there’s no purpose, then there’s no self-worth. Purpose is not defined by commonality, but by uniqueness.

Jukoshin Ryu. An effective self-defense system. The Jukoshin Ryu style of Jiu Jitsu was designed to be a powerful and definitive tool in hand-to-hand combat. In the same way that many weapons have been developed to provide advantages in combat, the human body has also improved the ways of using its natural weapons, that is, its structural components head, trunk and limbs, for the purpose of attack and defense. In Japan, empty hand combat techniques have become so effective that they have been studied and applied against any type of opponent, whether armed or not. The study of angles, tractions, impacts and levers, as well as the damages they could cause were was so deep that unarmed arts achieved the same advantages as an opponent with the most dangerous weapons. Torite (“Hand that grabs”) is the art of defeating and capturing an opponent with your own hands, the part of JuJutsu employed by the police at different periods in Japan until World War II. In this work, Grand Master Réné Latosa emphasizes how to use the Latosa-Escrima concepts: balance, speed (timing and distance), power, focus (attitude) and transition, to boost all the movement aspects used in the successful execution of any offensive or defensive action. Using Latosa-Escrima concepts is important because each person is physically and mentally different, so using a system or method based on techniques may not work for all people. As in any process in Martial Arts, anything and everything can be refined through development and practice. You’re the ones who make this weapon work in an efficient and effective way. You are the ones who adapt to the situation. The priority is to make sure that you are safe and that you are going to win. Jeet Kune Do BROKEN RHYTHM One of the things that we stress in our Wednesday Night classes is broken rhythm. Bruce Lee made sure that all of his students train with broken rhythm rather than training in a steady beat. Training in a steady type of beat seems to be the natural way we all train. Go in to almost any martial art school and you will see the students there hitting and kicking in a steady beat. It usually goes something like this, 1, 2, 3 punch and 1, 2, 3 punch. In our classes we have to constantly remind our students to break their rhythm. Bruce Lee didn't like to see his students hit with a steady beat as the punches become too predictable.

Jeet Kune Do e can define rhythm as “patternized beat”. In combat you can either go with your opponent's rhythm or impose your rhythm on him by going slow-fast or fast-slow. We try to make sure that all our training is in broken rhythm. When hitting the focus gloves, for example, we always try to have a different beat between the punches. We also spend a lot of time on breaking our opponent's attacking rhythm. We call this “hitting on the half beat”. When an opponent strikes he creates an opening and a closing line. The focal point (full beat) is between the opening and closing lines. It occurs when the punch hits, misses or is deflected. A 1/2 beat occurs before the focal point of an attack. A 1 & 1/ 2 beat occurs as the attacking line closes. You can break your opponent's rhythm before he his strike reaches full extension or after as he retracts the striking limb. What this means is you can counter attack effectively by breaking his rhythm by striking on the opening or closing line of the attacking strike. Example: Your opponent hits with a combination of jab to cross to hook. If you counter after the hook, it's on the 3 & 1/2 beat. If you counter after the cross, it's on 2 & 1/2 beat. If you counter after the jab and before the cross can land, it's on the 1 & 1/2 beat. Before the focal point of the jab, it's on the 1/2 beat. We try when ever possible to intercept our opponent's attack by counter attacking him on

the 1/2 beat. If done with the right timing there is no counter to it, and it stops the attack cold. What we strive for is to be able to hit our opponent before he has a chance to complete his attack. This is not as easy as we have to be able to â€œreadâ€? our opponent's attack and beat him to the punch with enough power to finish the fight. Bruce also taught his students to use broken rhythm when attacking their opponents. If you strike in a steady rhythm it is very easy for your opponent to pick up on it and thus be able to counter it easily. An example of steady rhythm in three punches would be hit - hit - hit at he same speed. You can break the rhythm of your attack by pausing slightly between hits. One example would be hit - pause - hit - hit, or hit - hit- pause - hit. Another way to break the rhythm of your attack is by the speed of your hits. Hitting with a steady rhythm with regard to speed would be fast - fast - fast. You can break the rhythm by hitting slow - fast - fast, or fast slow - fast for example. Rhythm of an attack can also be broken with the use of feints. For example you can by either hitting with feint - hit - hit, or hit feint - hit, or even feint - feint - hit. However you use, it the principle of broken rhythm can be applied to any martial art.

Jeet Kune Do SPEED The Wednesday Night Group has a forum which can be found on our website www.jkdwednite.com or on www.jkdtalk.com. On this forum we've gotten a lot questions about Bruce Lee's speed. They usually want to know if he was as fast as he seemed to be in his movies. The truth was that Bruce was even faster and had to slow his movements down so the camera could pick them up. I have a copy of Bruce Lee sparring at Ed Parker's karate tournament in 1967. I must have watched him spar ring with DanInosanto and Taky Kimura about 50 times, but it wasn't until I watched it in slow motion that I saw Bruce kick Dan in the head. The entire kick from his foot being on the ground to the kick to and the foot back on the ground took only about 5 frames of film. Even though Bruce Lee was very fast, he told Bob Bremer that he had met people who were faster than he was. He told Bob that because of this he had to learn to be deceptive. When most people talk about speed, they are usually talking about how fast a par ticular punch or kick is, but speed is much more than that. In fact Bruce broke down speed into 6 types and wanted his students to drill to proficient in all of them.

Jeet Kune Do he first type of speed that Bruce taught was perceptual speed. This is defined as â€œquickness of the eyeâ€?. Having good perceptual speed in defense means that you can see an attack coming toward you. You can judge the distance, and it's trajectory, so you can devise the proper counterattack. It also means that you can see any opening in your opponent's defense as it occurs. The next type of speed that we work on is mental speed. Mental speed is the ability to take advantage of what the mind sees. In other words, the eye sees the opening, and the mind then reacts to it. And decides on what course of action to take. The next course of action is based on initiation speed. To be able to effectively take advantage of mental speed, you need to be able to have what Bruce Lee called economical starting. This simply means that you're able to fire a punch or kick as quickly as possible. To do this you need to be in a good ready stance and be able to fire whatever tool you need with the greatest possible efficiency. The next aspect of speed is the one that most people think of when they think of speed. We call it performance speed. This is simply how fast a particular technique travels from point A to point B. We've found by testing that a lot of people have very similar speed in their punches and kicks. We've found that what makes one person faster than any other martial artist is that they able to use all of the above aspects of speed. Bruce Lee also found two other types of speed that is important to martial artists. The first one is alteration speed. This is the ability to start one technique, but be able to switch to another one if you see a

different line opening up. To be able to do this efficiently you need to have the first four types of speed. For example, if you start one movement and you see that your opponent is staring to leave another line open, you will be able to alter or switch your attack to this new opening. That last aspect of speed is sensitivity speed. This is the ability to be able when you have any contact with your opponent to feel any opening as they occur and then be able to react to it. We have many energy drills to work on this. The best known one is probably chi sao or sticky hands. To be able to make your Jeet Kune Do work in combat you need to be able to see or feel an opening and then able to take advantage of what you see or feel as quickly as possible. To do this you need to drill as much as possible on all six types of speed.

Kung Fu

From Teacher to Student At a time when the internet, phones and the like didnâ€™t exist yet, I would imagine, the student-teacher relationship must have been much more common than today. The reason is obvious: One acquired knowledge most o f a l l b y m e a n s o f o t h e r, m o r e experienced people. One often paid a lot of respect to the experienced person and/or one followed the teacher and mentor, even on travels through the country for decades in order to be taught. Modern technology provides us with many new ways to learn from someone and to spread knowledge. However, despite these numerous possibilities there are areas, in which one only makes progress, just like in the past, by means of the direct relationship between the teacher and the student. It is mostly about movement-related disciplines such as for example dancing. Or of course also the traditional martial arts such as the original Hung Gar Kung Fu of my school. It is in the nature of things that especially older people or people with entirely different interests are better at something than oneself.

This is probably an important part of my recipe of success with my teacher, the Kung Fu legend, Dr. Chiu Chi Ling. In our latitudes, the words “mentor” or “master” have a negative connotation, as, like I said, it is no longer common in many areas. And yet they are indispensable, as mentioned in the introduction, for the learning and the passing on of traditional Kung Fu. Such a relationship is by no means a one-way street. The student pays respect, honours his teacher and his school, helps him where he or she can and supports him. In return, the teacher has a responsible position, in which he is responsible for the success or failure of his students. Upon entering the school and at the start of the first lesson this connection, albeit not particularly strong yet, is already there. This step is known as “first Bai-Si”, which means “to ask the teacher for it”. In my school this is the handing over of the white belt after the passed test. After many years of instruction and loyal following a second Bai-Si can be taken. Here we are mostly talking about 10 to 15 years after the first lesson. At this festive ceremony the bond between student and teacher is confirmed and strengthened respectively. Hereby the student vows to have definitely decided for the master and to pledge loyalty and support to him. The teacher, in turn, publicly makes a commitment to his student and promises him or her to impart deeper knowledge into the martial arts to him or her. These were the so-called “in door” or “back door” students who used to be mostly taught right at the teacher’s house. Becoming such a student or even style

Kung Fu successor like me of course requires more than mere training and sweating. Again and again I observe how students, not only my own, give everything they possibly can and perform excellently in order to gain deeper knowledge into a martial art and to build up a strong Kung Fu family of own’s one. Yet, the art lies in doing so, not only a few weeks, months or years, but all the time. Similar to other types of relationships we know, such as for example marriage or good friendship, this kind of connection lives off love and energy, which are exchanged over a long time. The most suitable comparison would be the one of a family, such as for example between a father and a son. This is an enormously strong bond that can withstand a lot. Especially from the perspective of the student, it is not always pleasant to learn something from his master. Just as it is not pleasant for the son to be rebuked by his father. However, this is precisely how not only the character of the student is shaped but also how his or her devotion and loyalty is tested, again and again. And especially for me personally this is a very important point. Of course one is allowed to be interested in other martial arts or to take a look at what this or that school does differently. However, at the second Bai-Si, at the latest, the decision should be taken and the loyalty should be irrevocable. I like to handle it like my own teacher: “Loyalty before all else”. For my part, you may be slow, weak or inflexible. These are all things one can work on and improve together. As long as the loyalty is

Kung Fu there. However, one must not misunderstand me, as I said: I very much welcome an interest in other styles, schools and the comparison with them. I also promote and encourage my students to think for themselves on a daily basis. The basis of this relationship, however, is and will always be loyalty towards one’s teacher and his school. Usually, obligations also imply rights for the person concerned. And of course, this is also the case here. I mentioned the example of father and son, the example of a family. Does a loving father grow tired of helping his son when he is confronted with a difficult task? Certainly not. A good traditional teacher (Chinese “Sifu”) is always going to see his students as some sort of children. And likewise, in return for his or her loyalty, the student may of course always count on the support of his or her Kung Fu family and on the advice of his or her master. Who of us has ever been in a hectic phase in life or needed a few hands more in order to master a challenging situation? For the student, loyalty towards his or her master and his or her school involves a family that never grows tired of supporting and helping him or her. Of course this relationship changes in the course of the education, like for example at the completion of the basic school (black belt). From that point onwards, one ranks among “adults” in the Kung Fu community, and at that point at the latest, one also starts taking responsibility “downwards” for his or her younger Kung Fu brothers and sisters. Or when a student is appointed to “Sifu” (master, teacher), which symbolically corresponds to founding a family of one’s own. But the core of the matter always remains the same: One is part of a big, strong family, which is there for you and helps to follow the way with discipline, respect, control, courage and attention, in order to become a better, more virtuous human being.

When most people hear the word Kyusho, or the words Pressure Points, it is one of two things that come to mind ... Self Defense or a healing modality such as Acupuncture or Massage Therapy. In each instance, they are correct. There are some who focus mostly on the self defense aspect and other whose focus is more into the healing. I personally know of several people who trained with me and became so excited about manipulating the Pressure Points for self defense that they enrolled in Acupuncture classes, Massage Classes and Chiropractic Classes. Each area of study requires extensive focus on the mechanics of the body and how the practitioner can "assist" the body into healing itself. This is not an end all be all and each patient must be accountable for their health and lifestyle habits. This video will focus on how we can use the same 5 points for both healing and self defense. It is born from the love that Jose María Sánchez Barrio and myself feel for the wisdom contained in these pages; from our friendship and relationship; from our passion for living and understanding life. It was thanks to him that I found, read and learn how to appreciate this wonderful book from the “divine” Sun Tsu. I call him divine because even nowadays, after being my reference book for many years, I still cannot comprehend how a human being can be so enlighten as to reach such heights in knowledge without losing his humanity. His talent and his ability to synthesize about such complex subjects tell about his wisdom. I say, “tell” which doesn’t mean that everybody comprehends what it says. This is due in part to the difficulties to translate from such a different and distant culture. The other versions that we know had done a great job presenting us his work. It is obvious that if we have done this present one it is because we feel that the former ones don’t quite come close to really expose what we understand to be the legacy of Sun Tsu. We always felt behind his words a great deal of intensity; it was like a rough land that needed to be lawned. The bushes were hiding the treasures, but its own shining was revealing their position. For most, this text could be a dense compilation of formulas and advises from old times, basically simple and

that talks about a subject that the modern man doesn’t have really any interest in. We are talking about those men who are far away from any analogy interpretation, who are so absorbed in their stubborn rationalism and with little self CRITERIA. The ones that simply digest all that medicine that the media and society apply to them. The ones that totally prescient from the analogy as a tool, and without that tool, Sun Tsu'’ art of war could be without a doubt a great pain in the neck. Our intention it is just to renew the easy comprehension of this classic and far from cut it short to the parameters of a new world, open the door to the reader to this book full of analogies, that is meant to help him in his endeavors. The main problem we found and also the great approbation of this text was to rewrite the original version of Sun Tsu himself. Was this point the most complex of our work, the most challenging. The old adagio of “traduttore tradittore” was following us like a constant threat, a Damocles sword that was testing our IMPECABILITY. The task at hand was hard, as hard as satisfactory has been its conclusion. I can talk freely about it because this task is not mine, but belongs to my partner in this work. Sánchez Barrio has done a real well rounded work and I think the reader will agree with me on that if he takes the time to compare this with other versions. The former translators already pointed out the problems lying in this text. There exists a great difficulty in translating from a symbolic language full of images like the Chinese. The main translator from the Sun-tse-ping-fa, in other words, the rules about the war by Sun Tsu, was the Jesuit monk Father Amiot, who also author a biography about Confucius and a dictionary and grammar about the Manchu-tartar language. Father Amiot says in his book “The dark and difficult Chinese expressions make the work real hard… I focus then on non-literal translation, but to just give a general idea about how the Chinese author talks about war. .I did consult with scholars when necessary but even then it happened often in spite of his long explanations and their great efforts to make me understand, their lights didn’t show me the way any better.” “This unique language does not resemble any other. The Japanese call it the language of confusion, and it presents great difficulties for the Europeans…. The Chinese characters are meant to express ideas like a painting where the layman sees only

The Art of War the big object, or just a part of the beauty that it possesses, and only the true connoisseur is able to see all the beauty that the artist wanted to express. Beyond the pure translating problems, the original present’s big question marks when we trace its origins. T’sa T’sao made a compilation that it is the one that we know now, eliminating all that he thought not necessary. So we could think that his is different from the one that Suma ch’ien did centuries before. This work was already known before the date that is credited for its creation (IV century BC). It is a simple conclusion to think that just like it happens with others classic Chinese books; it does not belong to a single author. After so many versions and years, it is probable to guess that it has been transformed by the people and backed by the wisdom of the Chinese society, a society that has listened, proved and rewrite all the texts of its tradition. From my point of view we are dealing with so many challenges that this is no longer a task for Sinology. The search for purity must be here not a linguistic matter, but a spiritual one. To read between the lines and connect with the soul of the Chinese tradition, and the spirit of an enlightened one. That was the real challenge that Jose María Sánchez faced when he wrote a version that absorbs all former ones but that does it in a frame of global comprehension of the meanings of the tradition. This is then a free interpretation of the Art of War, but we must ask ourselves, which one it is not? At any rate a version that is consequent with its contents, rhythm and shapes. Each phrase, each paragraph blends naturally with the other, making a melody full of sense, a symphony that explains by it. We just wanted to amplify it by our comments before and after each chapter that hope will be appreciated by the reader. A tale about the way of the warrior chosen from the ones that we tough more appropriate will complement each chapter, adding a little romantic touch that softens the text. It takes the reader to a deeper reflection of feelings that are naturally conservative, rough and dry like the war itself. It is the obligation of each generation to take the knowledge of tradition and bring it to the present way, respecting its essence, but translating the truths to make it easier to understand in the present moment. We gave ourselves to that task with heart and soul comparing the tools at hand and going beyond our reach to bring you a reading that it is in tune with our hopes and dreams.

This book is an illustration of the keys of the way of the warrior, a way for the disciple that uses the strategy as a main tool. It is up to you to give it this or other meanings. It could be a guide for any task at hand or a highway for the higher counciousness. Our work has a clear direction, recuperate such a powerful tool. Believing in chance or luck is the most miserable of all superstitions. Science and reason haven’t taken it away from our daily lives, even tough they rule in our days. The over specialization that we experiment nowadays had gotten the modern man away from the renaissance model of knowledge. The data is overwhelming, a life time not enough for the task, the subjects getting bigger and bigger to infinities levels. The way of reason has divided man, has imposed his rule excluding any complementary options, and that way has lost his value as a tool. The pending subject that we have is to give free expression to the intuitive mind, to listen to the magic perception, to combine both sides of our brain, this is the only way to reunite our human beings. But how to take a step back and see the big picture? How to see the woods and not just the trees?

This is an old time proposition that is coming from far away in time and space. The accomplishment itself, victory leads towards arrogance and invariably this feeling kills serenity and objectivity, both attributes of the good general. Even the hero when was entering Rome, acclaimed by everyone, and crowned by Laurels, was subjected to her from that who was giving him the laurels: “Sit transit Gloria mundi” All glory is mundane and will pass. So, the first attention call from this book is to not confuse between the way of the hero and the way of the warrior. Warrior is who fights, who makes war with heart and soul, and not necessarily the one who wins. Hero is the one who has accomplished some awesome feat that took an immense amount of courage. The one who is son of a God and a mortal. The hero is far beyond us and that makes him untouchable. The way of the hero is then a task that can never be at our hands, full of dramatic feeling, with a very high stake, beyond human reach; it is a way of frustration that will lead us sooner or later to arrogance and that requires of egotism as attitude. The warrior is a human that fights, that falls in the battle, that bites the dust and gets up again and again to make evolution possible, he makes possible to correct the fault thorough the mistake itself, by learning from defeat thorough his effort. Without a doubt, both warrior and hero, require to be brave, but the face their challenges with different attitudes. Be aware then of the lovers of the heroic! An incorrect reading of Sun Tsu could feed their fantasies far beyond any other book. It is true that this distinction places us in front of a hard dilemma. It exist a paradox in the warrior between looking for challenges and keeping humble, between planning and

action, between the attention to detail while planning to the spontaneous action, between the search for victory and the detachment of the wise. To make all these paces fit on our being is an individual and complex task but essential nevertheless. The substantial key that differentiates the hero from the warrior, as we understand him, it is found in the sense of direction. In the hero we found the outward direction, the inward belongs to the warrior. It is not so much the accomplishment and the recognition, but the inner search, the personal evolution, the development of his potential; this is what drives the warrior. The world is his mirror, a battlefield that reflects his imperfection and forces him to ponder, to evolve from his own faults, that pushes him in the same direction as evolution, forward, upward and inward. The way of the warrior is the hall of the way of the wise. This belongs to the scholar, to the ruler, is in tune with Tao thus practices the non-action. On his way, the warrior polishes his soul; laughter is substitute for drama, play for accomplishment, the direct knowledge for the analogic comprehension, the non-action for the strategy. This is his evolving horizon. In the pyramid of knowledge the strategy shares with the philosopher, lives and acts in a strategic level; above the wise man practices the no-action, below all of them the specialist applies the formulas, like the scientific, breaks down the whole into pieces to reach specific solutions to determined problems; he is the technical man. I hope reach this point, there is no doubt about a particular subject: This book is not in any way an apology of war. On the contrary, Sun Tsu is always searching for new formulas to avoid it, and chooses when possible, the less destructive, the fastest, and cheapest solutions. War is something terrible but that cannot be ignored. There is Latin saying:” Si vis pacem, para bellum” (if you search for peace, get ready for war). Sun Tsu descries war from the position of the enlighten one that avoids it. He takes it from a strategic point of view and from there looks for the better and most economic solutions. It is possible to use the art of war for dark purposes, and by using his advice one could get shortly less than honorable benefits; Sun Tsu like the wise man that was knew it. There is a Chinese saying:” Bad feeds from good, later this destroys bad”

The Art of War From the strategy, his book is action, just like the Tao the king from Lao Tse is wisdom. The recognition of the Taoist wisdom is a constant in the whole text. This is without a doubt the language of the enlighten. Sun Tsu makes that trip taking in consideration the importance of the Universal Order, the Universal Conscience. That is why he is an enlighten one. We could say that the accent of Sun Tsu lies on Minerva more than Mars. Both Gods of war, they have different roots. Mars is the God of the bloody war, the rough one, and the cruel one. Minerva is the Goddess of war that assures peace; loves the war that makes sense and the quiet brave; the art and the crafts, the intellectual work. Their genealogy explains the differences. Mars was borne from the relationship of Jupiter God of Gods and June his sister. War, as a military situation is something tremendous. Great precipitator of the group evolution it is something traumatic. But it can not be denied because is something that is as human as we are. There are obviously a lot of formulas for evolution, to solve the way, but all of them come to two different options that only depend of the conscience of the societies: Suffering is the passive one, and effort is the active one. These are the two coins that we have in life. It is the group consciousness that requires of these “storms” that we produce, with its thunders and lighting, tremendous explosions of powers that had been ignored or put aside, compressed or not developed, that in a cyclic form explode in the group lives when they are not aware of the need for changes of structures that collide because they are too rigid, the create friction generate tension and finally explode. Only by developing a higher consciousness on the individuals we could exchange this constant need for changes on the group for something more creative, the elements of the group are individuals after all. So after pondering all the different terms that war could have, it is important to study its use. Mostly all other versions of the art of war understand the warrior as the soldier. In the martial arts we talk about the warrior as the fighter. But in his more pure state the warrior is something quite different. Both authors come to the conclusion that the highest interpretation of warrior is he who transcends the complexity of living and beyond any false security adopts before life a firm attitude, a brave one, a curios one, getting ready to use all his energy in unequal fight against his

limitations, in a constant act of self reaffirmation, so that way he can understand how he is a thinking part of the whole, evolving, walking along all the possibilities that lie in his interior with a flowing attitude. The book you hold in your hands is then, an inspirational one, a book that opens doors towards a continuos and productive action, a way of constant questioning that will light your own path without a doubt. Chapter 1: INITIAL ESTIMATIONS The essence and fundamentals of warfare Sun Tsu said: “Warfare is the greatest affair of state, the basis of life and death, the way to survival or extinction. It must be thoroughly pondered and analyzed.” To comment these words would be like shining a candle to the sun. It would be of better service to encarve them in the temple of the Gods of peace! “Therefore, structure it according to the five factors, evaluate it comparatively through estimations, and seek out its true nature. The five factors are: the Tao, Heaven, the earth, men and the laws.” We need some chance to succed in all our tasks in order to aproach them. To make that calculation, control of the situation is needed; to control the situation we need to examine it thoroughly, and include ourselves. In order to not hesitate when it is time to act we need not to fail when it is time to plan.

“The Tao causes the people to be fully in accord with the ruler. Thus they will die with him; they will live with him and not fear danger.” The Tao shows us to what degree the ruler, the general, and the people feel indentified; if they are willing to walk together on the way of the peace and war with virtue and justice; to share life and death without backing up an inch. I ching says:” people forget about the danger of death when they cherish their acomplishments.” “Heaven encompasses the climate, cold and heat, and the constraints of the seasons” It is the terrain in time and function with its cyclic changes. If you don’t know the heaven, and expect no change, you will have to lament, like Felipe II, to have sent your invencible ships to fight against the elements. “Earth encompasses far or near, difficult or easy, expansive or confined, fatal or tenable terrain.” Terrain it is the foundation of state, it is the play field of all activities. Far, near, difficult, easy,… are the factors that rule the succes or failure, life or death. “Men, encompasses the wisdom, credibility, benevolence, courage, and strictness of the general.” Napoleon said: he is the head of the army, the trops and oficers will look upon him and will develop the virtue of warfare. “The law encompass organization and regulations, the Tao of command, and the management of logistics.” All resources depend upon the order of law, discipline ,and courage. War and life could be a bullfight by all canons, or could be just a little fooling around with veals. It all depends upon law. That helps our actions so we can walk without confusion and fight in order. “There sould be no generals who have not heard of these five. Those who understand them will be victorious; those who do not understand them will not be victorious.”

A true warrior does not take any chances, he does not walk in a unkwown horizon. There lie the diference between having a sense of reality or just being a little smoke on the clouds. “Thus when making a comparative evaluation through estimations, seeking out its true nature, ask: which ruler has the Tao? Which general has greater ability? Who has gained the advantages of Heaven and Eartth? Whose laws and orders are more thoroughly implemented? Whose forces are stronger? Whose officers and troops are better trained? Whose rewards and punishements are clearer? From these I will know victory and defeat!” Beyond the impulse of risking one’s life, the search for recognition, or to reach glory in a terrain not familiar, the true warrior goes to battle just for survaible; practice is an spiritual one, he employs care and wisdom, he does not seek to show off or just cut enemy’s heads. “If a general follows my methods for estimation and you employ him, he will certainly be victorious and sholud be retained. If a general does not follow my methods, he will certainly be defeated, so dismiss him.” Sun Tsu makes that afirmation from the point of view of who can back it up with experience. That is why this book became godspell for all generations that came efter him. “After estimating the advantages in accord with what you have herad, put into effect with strategic power supplemented by field tactics that respond to external factors. As for strategic power, it is controling the tactical imbalance of power in accord with the gains to be realized.” To study and listen to advice is helpless without action, only then advantage is gained. “Warfare is the way of deception” Strategic deception is not against morals. Those who are not well versed in deceptiveness, in feinting to draw, seduce with sugestion, the truth and the lies, the camouflege, the traps, the fiction, the faque; he who cannot control all this chores with intelegence will be defeated in war and in life. Isn’t it the same strategy that play the democratic leaders? Said with the politness of the french proberbs; Strategy is the art of making others ask you for what you are really wanting to do. They cannot be spoken of in advance” He who shows his game it is bound to lose. Again Napoleon: the only notice of your plan should be its execution. “Before the engagement, one who determines in headquarters that he will be victorious has found that the majority of factors are in his favor. Before the engagement one who determines that he will not be victorious has found few factors in his favor. If one who finds that the majority of factors favor him will be victorious while one who has found few factors favor him will be defeated, what about someone who finds no factors in his favor?. If I observe it from this perspective, victory and defeat will be apparent.” When you did not prepare for battle, you are forced to improvise. You must be superior to your enemy in any way. Look for advantages. The best one is to place your enemy in a weak position from the very beginning.

The princess, the horse and the land By the end of the Chin dynasty, Mo Tun, from the Hsiung Family, became ruler. The Hu family from the East where strong and send people to talk to him. “We wish to have the 500 miles horse of Tou Ma”. Some of them said since they don’t have a use for the land, that was reasonable to give it to them, some said not to. Mo Tu got ungry and said:” The land it is the foundation of the country. How can we give it away? Everyone who advised him to do it was decpitated. Mo Tu jump in his horse, order everyone to not follow him to be decapitated, and launch a surprise attack. The Hu had a very low image of Mo Tu and were not ready for an attack. When Mo Tu got to them they were destroyed. After that he went West and attack Yueh Ti. South he attack Lou Fan and conquer his lands. Gradually he reconquer all land that used to belong to the Hsiung.

KEYS FOR WAREFARE Commentaries to chapter 1 According to Sun Tsu, warfare is the greatest affair of state, the basis of life and death, the way to survival or extinction. Fifth is law, order, control. Organization allows control. We need laws to be right when assigning officers, when making decisions, when dominating situations.

Second factor is heaven. Heaven means the weather. It manifest and develops in cycles. There is a proper time for each task. The wise discover the art of sailing when he got tired of rowing. To used the wind, to concentrate efforts, take the advantage, proper timing to get to safe shore. To ignore this means to fail, because our human condition is insignificant in front of Nature’s forces and the infinite skies.

Entropy makes control harder. When processes speed up are harder to control. To drive at 200 miles per hour is harder than at 15m/h. Therefore when deciding your plan of action you must ponder about your resources, no matter what is their nature, and organization, because it is this organization what is going to make the most of your resources.

Space opposes and complements time. Therefore land is the next factor.

Therefore a greater use of your resources makes for a greater difficulty to control them. Only an excellent control will prevent that .

Space it is mostly structural while time is mostly functional. Do we know where we stand? What kind of terrain will find? What relative position are we while passing a certain place? Let us pay close attention to this, because to walk on the top makes us noticeable. To use wisely the land marks makes the difference between being able to use certain forces or to be affected by them. We look for a terrain that allow us to develop and reach our goals. Bruce Lee said:” if you cannot be touch you can’t get hurt” After pondering about the Tao and heaven and earth, comes man. Man is the fourth factor. Man is son of heaven and earth. The general, the warrior is the paradigm of the human. His qualities are wisdom, humanity, precaution, power and justice. Sun Tsu comes back to this point over and over in his text. He is totally certain about the importance of making this point clear. Obviously is due to the importance of the general as the ruler and owner of his people’s destiny.

When tired apply the golden rule: “concentrate your energy to increase vitality”. To fly faster, you must decrease your wings diameter. Avoid friction to implement functionality. When in crisis, companies concentrate by cutting off employees, locations, size, expenses, activity. The concentrate on their strengths, they apply their resources where they are most productive avoiding the week spots. These five factors point he way. When the weapons have grown dull and spirits depressed, when our strength has been expended and resources consumed, the feudal lords will take advantage of our exhaustion to arise. Even though you have wise generals, they will not be able to achieve a good result.” First question we must ponder in any situation is not to ask what can we gain, but what can we lose. Do not sell the bear’s skin before you hunt it! “Thus in military campaigns I have heard of awkward speed but have never seen any skill in lengthy campaigns. No country has ever profited from protracted warfare.“ Victory must be obtained as fast as possible. Spare as many lives as possible. Make sure you and your enemy loses the minimum. Pitakos, a Greek sage used to say: “true victories are those with no blood shed.” Therefore warfare if brief, is half as bad. “Those who do not thoroughly comprehend the dangers inherent in employing the army are incapable of truly knowing the potential advantages of military actions.” This is the double edge of the sword. The expert general, manager, father, teacher… always ponders about the advantages that lay in the dangers, and the dangers that lay in the advantages. It is the relationship between investment and profit. To be prepared will lead to security. When you are aware of the dangers, disaster stays away. “One who excels in employing the military does not conscript the people twice or transport provisions a third time. If you obtain your equipment from within the state and rely on seizing provisions from the enemy, then the army’s foodstuffs will be sufficient. The army impoverishes the state when it transports provisions far off. When provisions are transported far off, the hundred surnames are impoverished. Those in proximity to the army will sell their goods expensively. When goods are expensive, the state’s wealth will be exhausted. When their wealth is exhausted, they will be extremely hard-pressed to supply their village’s military impositions.

When their strength has been expended and their wealth depleted then the houses in the central plains will be empty. The expenses of the people will be some seventy per cent of whatever they have. The ruler’s irrecoverable expenditures will consume sixty per cent of his resources.” Before starting any deployment everything has to be planned. The bee loses its power as it gets far off the colony. Resources are expended in direct proportion to the distance of your base. Therefore when going far off, use your enemy’s tension. If you don’t want to weaken your state, feed off your enemy. “Thus the wise general will concentrate on securing provisions from the enemy. One bushel of the enemy’s foodstuffs is worth twenty of ours; one picul of fodder is worth twenty of ours.” Birds don’t carry their food when migrating. You should save the enemy’s blood but have no mercy with their foodstuffs. Execute your actions like a beggar, think like an immortal. “Thus what motivates men to slay the enemy is anger; what stimulates them to seize profits from the enemy is material goods.” Blood will make you drunk, greed will make you blind. Senses can run wild. Passion can be fuel for action, but never lead it.

A bomb on a timer A martial arts expert settled in a far off village. He started to feel very powerful, because the people in the village were afraid of him. He became the boss of that place. He was very pleased that nobody was brave enough to face him. But one day… An old man with a white beard did not yield to him and continued walking in front of him. The martial arts expert tried to push the old man away, but found only empty space, because he just bobbed away. The expert got very angry and blindly charged again hitting the old man. In the mist of the action the old man awkwardly tried to block the punches as well as he could,

maybe even managing to touch the brute’s chest, but quickly rolled on the floor. Very pleased by the lecture given, the champion left the scene leaving the body of the old man on the floor. The old man seemed dead, he was not moving. After the brute left, the old man opened one eye, then the other, he got up, shook the dust from his clothes and left town quietly. Days were passing and the boxer was feeling worse and worse. His body was weak. He was having trouble breathing and digesting. Headaches came often. One day, fever was so high that he had to stay in bed. He could hardly talk. THE TRUE PEACE Commentaries to chapter 2 After giving a definition of the principal terms of warfare, Sun Tsu describes in this chapter the essentials for its execution. War is not an end by itself. It is a transition that must be quick and safe. These are the two essentials in his discussion. Safety: Ponder your actions thinking what you could lose and your capabilities to obtain your goals. Measure how much it will cost and what will be the price to pay. Consider of course failure. Consider the advantages inside the dangers and the dangers inside the advantages. Even victory could bring unexpected problems; you must study those before engaging. This is hard to understand even for those who are good planners. Speed: Warfare as a transition opposes to warfare as an end depends on speed. Battles must be like storms; the strongest, the fastest to pass. Their nature implies a tremendous expense of energy. Therefore speed is of capital importance and victory depends upon it a great

deal. Ultimately the goal for Warfare is to bring back peace. Peace in its broader definition does not mean absence of military conflict. Disease free does not mean good health. Health is an active process of well being and well doing. Thus, by analogy peace falls into the same definition. True peace is not possible if defined from a static point of view. Everything is relative, therefore it is hard to decide where war ends and where peace starts. Sun Tsu knew this and that is why he said that only the general is the master of peace and fate for the people, ruler of the state security or endangerment. He decides when and how to act and what actions are the most profitable for his people. A general from this point of view is an enlightened person. Therefore he knows that the ultimate truth lies in the opposites that complement each other. When Krishna learned that he got friends upon the enemy lines, he declared that he does not wish to kill anyone and he wants nothing to do with the imminent destruction. He being paradigm of the warrior lights up in that moment and shows his true nature in front of Arjuna, his ruler. He really is the being of the thousand faces, the true essence of the human. He says to his lord: “Do not worry about the enemy my lord, they are already dead.“ Beyond the opposites, the wise knows the ultimate truth. Ueshiba says: “When somebody tries to attack me he has lost already, because he is not only attacking me, but the whole universe.” The true essence of Aikido lies in the union of the opposites.“Ai” means union, “ki” means the essential energy, the inner force of all things and beings, “do” means the way. The Aikido practitioner does not work on techniques, he works toward being receptive to his opponent’s force, from the point of view that there is no such thing as “opponent”. True peace depends upon our own realization of this paradox.

There has been a question that has vexed virtually every Founder of a Martial Art since ancient times: who do I entrust with my art when I am too old to continue teaching, and after I am gone? To be sure, many other businesses, endeavors and professions besides the Martial Arts, have faced the same dilemma throughout history, and the issue is still relevant today in our modern s o c i e t i e s . We c o u l d e x a m i n e hundreds of examples where famous “brands” carry the family names of their original founders, names that were passed down generation to generation to family members, creating, in the process, lasting, defacto “dynasties”. From designer clothes to fine wines, from automobiles to book publishing, from restaurants to banking, from jewelry to medicines, the desire to pass the torch to a family member has always been strong, becoming, in fact, a respected (and expected) tradition in almost all cultur es around the world. This firmly established practice has resulted in countless successful local enterprises, with many eventually evolving into enormous international business empires.

Grand Master Pellegrini n this discussion we should perhaps also mention the historical tradition of royalty and aristocracy to transfer titles, land and authority to their heirs as a birthright through inheritance (sadly, sometimes resulting in devastating wars of succession). And today we can often observe wealthy, prominent families striving (some successfully) to establish political “dynasties” by using money and influence (and even crimes) in the ruthless acquisition of political power for their family members (the worst and most extreme example in the world today being the dynasty of dictators that has ruled North Korea since 1948). On a much smaller scale, (because I am not aware of any Martial Arts “industrial empires”), the Founders of Martial Arts or Styles, animated by the same desire to pass the torch to a family member, have also always attempted to follow that same tradition (in Japan it was called “isshi sodden”, the complete transmission of the techniques and principles of a “ryu to one of their blood”). However, today, especially in the West, this tradition is no longer common and is seldom successful. And although we can point out to some well-known examples of successful style transmissions to family members, as in the instance of Wally Jay (1917 – 2011) officially naming his son Leon Jay the inheritor of Small Circle Jujutsu in 2002, they appear to be the exceptions and not the norm. There are three main reasons for the current paucity of established martial arts family dynasties:

• The Founder has family members, but they have no interested in the Martial Arts. • The Founder has family members without the necessary talent / skills / abilities. • The Founder has no family members.

Let’s examine each in more detail The first reason is the most common today because our moder n world offers an incredibly vast variety of opportunities and competing interests in many different fields. In ancient times, especially in Asian cultures, children were expected to follow in the footsteps of their fathers. Respect, almost a veneration, of the elders was an honored tradition rarely broken or ignored. A martial art style developed by a particular family in a village, would almost invariably be passed on to a member of the family (preferably to the oldest son). Very often, in ancient tribal cultures (for instance in the Philippines, Okinawa, Indonesia or Thailand), the entire family was involved in the development and practice of a fighting style, that also included the preservation of its unique “secret techniques”. Young family members were expected to continue the tradition, and, unlike today, they were not distracted or seduced by hundreds of other opportunities in sports, entertainment, technology, education or business. Today’s young people may learn and train in the martial art style founded by their father for some years, but later they more likely will go on to become computer programmers, engineers, police officers, doctors, business managers or take advantage of any of the myriad other available options. Incidentally, that has been my personal experience with my own son Frank who recently graduated from the University with a degree in Cellular Biology and intends to pursue a career in medical research. Growing up with

Grand Master Pellegrini a father who is the Founder of a martial art style (Combat Hapkido), and an internationally respected martial arts figure with a successful martial arts business, was not enough to spark in him a desire to follow in my footsteps or develop an interest in my profession. After receiving his 1st Dan Black Belt in 2011 at age 14, Frank informed me that his heart was not into the Martial Arts and that he wanted to focus completely on his education in the medical field. Of course, I approved of his choice and have been very supportive of his goal. I am sure many other Founders and prominent Headmasters of their own systems, have had the same experience and, I hope, the same positive response. In the second situation, where the Founder has family members who, although maybe interested and willing, do not possess (and are not likely to ever develop) the necessary physical abilities, technical skills, creative talent and leadership attributes indispensable for the successful preservation, refinement and transmission of a martial art system. Ideally, the family member “taking over” the style, should also exhibit an interesting and mature personality, complete with exceptional qualities such as charisma, strong character, integrity, commitment and disciplined work ethics. That’s a very tall order and not easily fulfilled! We can train a family member in our system and be reasonably successful in teaching them the curriculum even to a great measure of proficiency, but that is not enough; it is only one of the several ingredients needed for the right “recipe”. Unfortunately, in some cases the Founder will not recognize (or refuse to admit) that the son, daughter or other family member, is not ready or is not a suitable candidate to inherit the system and will proceed with the transfer of authority. This will invariably result in disappointment and resentment within the senior ranks, the devolution and eventual fragmentation of the governing structure, its descent into disrepute and possibly even the style’s total demise. Unfortunately, there have been several examples of this happening in the history of Martial Arts. Now, before we discuss the last reason for the lack of Martial Arts dynasties, we must take a brief detour to examine another related and interesting situation, frequently observed in the Arts, and that is of those instances when capable, suitable family members are present and the development of a family “dynasty” possible, but the members pursue different (sometimes even antagonistic) paths, embracing a different art or even creating their own styles. Obviously, we cannot list every one of those cases, but I will offer a few examples: • Tatsuo Shimabuku (1908 – 1975) Founded Isshin-ryu Karate in Okinawa, while his younger brother Eizo Shimabuku (1925 – 2017) went on to create his own style, “Shobayashi”, of a different art: Shorin-ryu • The de Thouars brothers, although all excellent teachers of Indonesian / Chinese arts, each created their own versions: Paul de Thouars (1930 – 2013) “Serak Tulen / Butki Negara” – Willem de Thouars (1936 - ) “Kun Lun Pai Kun Tao” – Victor de Thouars (1941 – 2017) “Serak Tongkat” • Remy Presas (1936 – 2001) founded “Modern Arnis”, a style of Filipino Martial Arts, while his younger brother, Ernesto Presas (1945 – 2010) founded his own style “Kombatan”. A Presas “dynasty”, however, is possibly in the making since both styles are currently led by their respective sons: Remy, Jr. and Ernesto, Jr.

There are also other cases that do not easily fit in any well-defined category: • Bruce Lee (1940 – 1973) could not pass the torch of his style, Jeet Kune Do, to his son Brandon because when Bruce died Brandon was only 8 years old. And although Brandon Lee (1965 – 1993) did study JKD later in life, he also studied other arts, and we cannot speculate what path he would have followed had he not been killed in a tragic accident. • In Hyuk Suh (1939 - ) is the Founder of the Korean art “Kuk Sool Won”, and while his brother In Sun Seo (1942 - ) was involved in the development and promotion of the art for many years, they eventually parted ways, with In Sun Seo (my teacher) pursuing the growth and refinement of Hapkido. A Seo dynasty is possibly in place as all his children (Scott, Steve and Sara) are actively teaching and keeping their father’s legacy. • Ed Parker (1931 – 1990) was the Founder of American Kenpo Karate. Today, his son Ed, Jr. (1959 - ) owns the rights to all of his father’s intellectual property. However, he cannot claim leadership of the style since he received his 1st Dan Black Belt in 1993, (three years after his father’s death) from Ron Chapel, one of Parker’s senior students. All the examples shown in this detour were necessary to illustrate that in the Martial Arts, the passing of the torch is a complex subject, with numerous variables, possibilities and difficulties. The last of those issues, that we will examine next, will also be the one that will reveal the inevitable solution historically adopted most often. This third reason (the Founder having no family heir to pass the torch to) is easy to address and requires no elaboration. Some Founders simply had no children or younger siblings (not even some distant relatives) to make it possible to keep the style “in the family”. This situation clearly presents only one possible, logical and practical solution: go outside the family! And what makes this solution particularly interesting and worth discussing, is that it also applies to the first two reason already examined. Going outside of the family to find a suitable inheritor to a style is also the appropriate, sensible and effective solution to the problem of not having the right family member to carry on, regardless if it is due to the absence of heirs, lack of interest, dedication, talent, charisma, ability or skills. All those reasons justify making the decision to seek a candidate outside of our family relations. In Japan, the Headmasters of many Martial styles who faced the same problem, adopted the same solution which was known as “yuiju ichinin” (the transmission of a ryu to

one outside the bloodline). But how was that accomplished? And is the process still valid today?

Enter the Soke-Dai Before we proceed, however, we must deal with the controversy surrounding the use of the Japanese word “Soke”. I am well aware that many experts assert (rightly) that it should not be used in a modern Martial Arts context. There are several well researched, accurate articles and essays available covering this topic in depth. It is an absolutely correct historical fact that originally the word had a very different meaning and usage and was never specifically intended to describe a Founder of a Martial Art / Style (and, as a sequitur, it would therefore preclude the use of soke-dai in the same context). Since its appearance in Martial arts parlance around 40 years ago, there has been a fierce debate between the “purists’ (those who defend the original, literal meaning of the word) and those who believe in an “evolved”, looser and broader interpretation of the term. The problem is that after the last four decades of “misuse”, the term Soke has firmly and permanently embedded itself in Martial Arts lexicon, and despite the continued harsh criticism, even ridicule, still expressed by many, its use can no-longer be eradicated. The readers, at this point, may demand full disclosure on my part to reveal where I stand on this contentious issue and, consistent as always with the principle of Yin and Yang, I will state my position as follows: Although I believe the “purists” (because of their meticulous linguistic and historical research), and although personally I have never used that title in my credentials, I do not object to its modern usage in the Martial Arts. As cultures change with time, languages also evolve; words expand their meaning and even acquire entirely new ones. The debate over the use of Soke should end, it has become an annoying distraction, futile and, at this stage, unproductive. The word, in its modern Martial Arts context, is here to stay. Now let’s return to the Soke-Dai. When, for any of the reasons already discussed, a Soke (also called “Iemoto”) was forced to look for a successor to his style outside of his family, he would search among his most senior students to select a candidate who possessed not only the best technical knowledge of the style, but also many of the

qualities we have already mentioned. It goes without saying that for someone outside the bloodline to be appointed Soke-Dai and receive the “Densho” (scroll of written transmission) that student had to have demonstrated unwavering loyalty and total commitment to the Soke for many years. If such a candidate did not exist, at the death of the Founder, the “ryu” would die with him. But that was rarely the case as several senior students with the proper qualifications were usually available. Ideally, the transmission would take place while the Soke was still alive (although maybe too old or infirm to physically teach), so that he could supervise and guide an orderly transition, impart additional wisdom, settle internal “political” disputes, assign responsibilities and issue additional “Menkyo” (teaching licenses). The Soke-Dai would also receive the Menkyo Kaiden, the highest level of teaching license (usually requiring 30 years of training). In some cases, the Soke would reveal the name of the chosen Soke-Dai on his deathbed, his selection possibly causing surprise, consternation or possibly even conflict among his students. Thankfully, in our times, the process is usually not so formal nor so dramatic. In conclusion, the objective of this dissertation was to share some history and information on an issue that eventually must be faced by the Founders, instructors and practitioners of many styles; it is the question I asked at the beginning: What happens to the Style when the Founder is gone or unable to continue? Some choose to avoid the question by saying that it is premature (or even morbid) because they still have many years ahead of them. Others believe that when the time comes things will just naturally fall into place, without a lot of fastidious preparations. Maybe both groups are just avoiding dealing with what they consider un unpleasant task or a difficult choice. Hopefully, the majority, will take the path of wisdom and prepare for the inevitable time when they have to pass the torch to the next generation. As the Founder of a Martial Art style, now in my 70s, I have already begun to plan the careful process of structuring the transmission of my style. Obviously, I hope to have many more years to enjoy my Martial Arts career and continue making a contribution to the Arts, but I also want to be ready to successfully pass the torch when it’s time.
