Le tecniche di Muay Boran (Mai Muay Boran) sono abilità nate in battaglia che, in epoche passate, hanno aiutato i guerrieri siamesi a sopravvivere in innumerevoli scontri con soldati nemici, sia armati che disarmati. Dopo una iniziale di formazione nei concetti combattivi di base, Mae Mai (tecniche madre), tutti i tirocinanti vengono istruiti nelle strategie di combattimento avanzate (Mai Kred) del combattimento siamese. Kred può essere tradotto come dettaglio. Pertanto, queste strategie di combattimento hanno lo scopo di aggiungere molte informazioni dettagliate ai concetti di base inclusi nei principi delle Mae Mai. Ogni stile tradizionale comprendeva una serie di Mai Kred che i Maestri dell'antichità c o n s e r v a v a n o gelosamente; quei principi erano destinati a mettere in salvo in una situazione di vita o di morte e non venivano mai mostrati senza una motivazione seria. he most orderly minds, the most orderly-loving spirits, or those who have been brought up in a context where these principles, for historical, sociological, or even environmental reasons, acquire more importance, deal poorly with the concept of superiority and inferiority. It keeps happening to the Japanese people who, huddled on a few small islands and isolated for centuries, had no other choice but to organize themselves fiercely or collapse and succumb. It was not much different in Korea, a peninsula as mountainous as the Japanese islands. These things print character and it's well known that demographic pressure generates warrior cultures. Those who strenuously insist on the idea of hierarchy, as a shield that should be applied to everything, usually hide behind it to circumvent their sense of inferiority. Accepting our limitations without bitterness and in a natural way is the first step to wisdom. In the end, any categorizing of reality is an approximation to what it is, through what we see, and what we see is always subjective. Nobody is better or worse, superior or inferior, everything is a catalog with which we want to face a reality that, most of times, we face... I'm sorry, blindfolded. To shelter behind the barrier of reason and experience is a legitimate and even necessary strategy, because you're using the weapons you have to face the unknown. Something quite different is to try to raise universal formulations to the altars and, what's more, pretend that they serve everyone. From the watchtower of our ego we see everyone below us. The problem with managing these concepts ad maiorem is that sometimes we forget about the most elementary thing, and it's simply that we ignore. Starting from the principle of ignorance places us in the necessary humility, so that when the beating will reach us (it always reaches us!), it does not collide with our ego like a highspeed train hitting a moth. The maximalist positions, in which one and his point of view are above the rest are the fruit of arrogance, and there is no pettiest arrogance than the one that is dressed in humility. I have seen that in many religious (God forbid!) who, following the dictates of their philosophy, pretend to give bread without having flour.

Serrat says it in his wise and poetic way: "Each one is anyone, and he goes around with nothing but the clothes on his back." We all walk with just the clothes we wear, because we have nothing and we take nothing from this life, and everyone, absolutely everyone, is a unique experience of Infinity, which does not even repeat the unique crystalline structure, of each snowflake that falls. Catalogues are very good, they're even very helpful, but they are still catalogues. Encyclopedias are great when it comes to naming things. But pretending that knowing the symptoms is knowing the remedy is wrong. It happens all the time with doctors and modern medicine and that's how we're doing... few examples like the present of such obvious arrogance. Categorizing does not mean understanding; drawing lines on maps does not mean being able to divide; reality always surpasses the smarted plans and the most sibylline strategies; and this is so because only the fool does not know that he is, and to the others he presents himself as wise. Knowing does not mean being wise, for wisdom, when it does exist, comes wrapped in the unequivocal patina of unassembled simplicity, which knows much better what it ignores than what, like a fleeting flash, gives us back an image in the dark night of life, an image of the illuminated valley, a single and fleeting moment by the glare of a lightning. Our personal universe are not single frames in a jerky movie; for this reason, all of us, in our own way, we fill in the gaps as our brain does, by ignoring the blinks while using our eyes. We organize as we go, we establish parameters of what is and what is not, not always coherent, and so we walk, as the great Atahualpa Yupanqui said better than me:

Introduction Muay Boran techniques (Mai Muay Boran) are battle born skills that, in past Eras, helped Siamese warriors to survive in countless clashes with enemy soldiers both armed and barehanded. In the last 20 years, with the help of a few knowledgeable thai masters, I did my best to bring Mai Muay Boran back to life: in my opinion, those skills represent a priceless heritage that must absolutely be preserved for future generations. Since I first started to write about Muay Boran (Ancient Muay) on this Magazine, this amazing Art went a long way, not without undergoing a series of crucial transformations.

Muay Thai y understanding of ancient Muay has always put this Art in relation to possible military or martial uses: in other words, Muay Boran was a terribly effective way to dispatch enemies on a battle field with one’s body weapons only. However, in the course of the years, a different approach found its way in the Art’s motherland. In fact, according to some practitioners, Muay Boran represented a spectacular system of displaying one’s athletic prowess in the course of shows and demos. This was probably due to the blockbusters that made Thai actor Tony Jaa famous worldwide. Even if it may look interesting for some, this “showy” approach is not part of what I teach in my International Academy: in fact, all IMBA instructors are required to learn, train and teach real fighting skills. Our goal is to provide realworld combat knowledge that everyone (men, women, young, old) can apply in all environments (in various climatic conditions or locations) and scenarios (sport fighting, self-defence). Essentially, after some training in basic fighting concepts that in Thai language are called Mae Mai (mother techniques), all trainees are instructed in the advanced fighting strategies (Mai Kred) of Siamese combat. a series of Mai Kred that Masters of old jealously preserved; those principles were meant to survive a life or death situation and were never displayed without a serious reason. This traditional approach to teaching and learning Mai Kred belongs to IMBA philosophy and all members follow this same line of thought. Combat Mai Kred. Kred, เกร็ด can be translated as detail. Therefore, these combat strategies are meant to add many detailed information to the basic concepts included in Mae Mai principles. When a student is good enough at applying the basic concepts of Muay to most fighting scenarios, he/she will be introduced to the detailed techniques. This advanced skill is essential for a Nak Muay (Muay fighter) to actually progress in his/her technical growth. The final goal is to “create” all-rounders, warriors that are capable of standing their ground against an ample spectrum of possible attacks. Mai Kred are presented in this video according to the “classic” classification accepted by most teachers in Thailand: every Mai encompasses several possible applications that are meant to put the

Muay Thai trainee in condition to defend and counter against various attacks. Punches, kicks, elbow and knee strikes, grabs: a Nak Muay skilled in Mai Kred techniques is prepared to cope with many of those vicious attacks and retaliate with devastating efficiency.

Basic Training The solo Form Mai Kred Rai Ram or solo Form (Rai Ram literally means Dancing), is an extremely compact, dynamic, powerful sequence that encompasses a series of effective combative principles. The special features of Mai Kred Form are as follows: • This Form is dynamic. The punching, kicking, elbowing and throwing techniques included in this Form are extremely powerful and dynamic. In order to properly execute Mai Kred techniques, a trainee must develop dynamic footwork and explosive strikes. • This Form includes techniques that are effective at both short range and long range. High and middle kicks and jumping attacks are included in the sequence: these are typical long range techniques. Also punches and low kicks that are best executed at middle range are part of this Form. Elbow strikes and throws are typical short range maneuvers: by a regular practice of this sequence a trainee can also develop a sound knowledge of several strategies that are best employed at close range. • This forms is helpful in training advanced angular steps. New students tend to attack and defend on a straight line, usually going forward when attacking and backward when defending. This advanced form is a very good training tool for a Nak Muay who wants to develop angular steps that can drastically increase his fighting efficiency. • Contrary to other Forms, this sequence shows several low line kicking techniques. This is not a common feature in Siamese Martial Arts. In fact, thai boxers are renowned for their powerful high and middle roundhouse kicks: the only exception to this is a trademark of Muay, the low swing kick (or low kick). However, many low line kicking attacks (not only roundhouse kicks) are an integral part of the martial traditions of ancient Siam. This sequence is a precious compendium of many vicious leg attacks aimed at the opponent’s calves, knees, thighs and groin.

Muay Thai Training drills for distance and timing Solo Forms are very effective training tools that should be used by every Muay Boran stylist to develop crucial combat attributes. However, the skills acquired through Forms practice must be complemented by special partner drills created to develop timing and a sense of distance

from the opponent. In fact, without regular training in twoperson drills it will be impossible to transfer the skill acquired through the solo practice to real fighting situations. Through the basic drills presented here, in a relatively short time, all students will develop a keen sense of timing in the execution of their counterattacks. According to an ancient Thai tradition, when a Mai Muay is

executed with perfect timing, it is virtually unstoppable. This kind of flawless technique is called Mai Tai, ไม้ตาย (technique to terminate). Any technique that is perfectly executed and leads to a definitive result can be called Mai Tai: most Mai Kred, if correctly executed, lead to a definitive result. The same cannot be said for other groups of techniques included in traditional styles’ backgrounds. For all of these reasons, all Muay Boran students (and

teachers) should spend a considerable amount of time honing their timing and sense of distance with partners of different size and skill. The practitioner’s skill level will rise quickly and the effectiveness of his fighting techniques will be impressively increased. At the same time, all trainees’ physical and technical attributes should be enhanced through a series of specific drills as indicated in IMBA’s training principles. The four

Combat Muay Boran applications Now, let us analyse the 15 Mai Kred strategies more in detail. Among the many possible variations of each technique, a Nak Muay Boran should choose the ones that best fit his physical and psychological characteristics. Following Combat Muay Boranâ€™s philosophy of fighting the selected techniques should not be overly complex and should be able to terminate enemies as quickly as possible. In order to make the right technical choices the guidance of an expert teacher is absolutely needed.

Muay Thai 1. Erawan Soei Nga – An elephant’s tusks that strike with a powerful upward surge are imitated by the fighter’s closed hand or elbow. In fact, the core technique of this Mai Kred is a short range upward strike, punch or elbow. The chief point of attack is the chin. This counterattack strategy can be applied with a parry followed by a strike or with a sidestep and simultaneous blow that must be executed with perfect timing. 2. Bata Lub Pak – When the foot hits the face it can cause serious damage to a fighter’s facial bones (nose, teeth, cheekbones) as well as representing the ultimate insult in Thai culture. The core technique of this Mai Kred is a devastating straight kick aimed at the face of the opponent (the chief point of attack). This head kick can be executed pre-emptively to surprise the opponent or as a counter against punches or swing kicks. 3. KhunYak Pa Nang – Totsakan, the lord of demons in Ramakien epic poem, possessed a superhuman strenght. His hold was unbeatable. The core technique of this Mai Kred is a neck or body hold that leads to a throw. The chief points of attack are the carotid sinus (for the initial neck hold) and the back of the head that should impact against the floor during the throw. 4. Phra Ram Now Sorn – The gesture of Lord Rama that draws his powerful bow and throws an arrow is represented in this Mai Kred. The core technique consists of an initial defense against a downward elbow or hammer punch (drawing the bow) followed by a short uppercut (throwing the arrow) aimed at the throat of the opponent (chief point of attack).

Muay Thai 5. Graisorn Kham Huai – When the mythical lion Graisorn attacks his prey he does so by unexpectedly jumping on it from an angle. When the Muay Boran stylist counterattacks a straight kicks he should sidestep the attack and retaliate with a low side kick (core technique) aimed at the opponent’s knee (chief point of attack). The side kick can hit the inner or outer side of the opponent’s knee. 6. Kwang Liew Lang – The golden deer in Ramakien epic evades Rama’s attempts to catch him in order to set a trap for his wife Sita, at the same time. Similarly, a Nak Muay Boran should fake a punch or kick before throwing a powerful spinning back kick (core technique) to the opponent’s solar plexus, liver or spleen (chief points of attack). Alternatively, this Mai Kred can be used to counter punches or kicks by parrying or evading before spinning around and kicking. 7. Hiran Muan Paen Din – Just like the giant demon Hiranyaksa that overturns the Earth, so the Nak Muay can spin around and, turning the tables, counter a swing kick with a deadly back elbow strike (core technique). This knock-out blow can be aimed at the opponent’s jaw or temple (chief points of attack) with devastating results. 8. Naka Mud Badan – The snake-dragon Naka is a most powerful creature: he can attack low targets with his fangs or high targets with his tail. In a similar way a Muay Boran stylist can counter hand or leg attacks with low side kicks or with high swing kicks (core techniques). The chief points of attack of this devastating Mai Kred are the neck (high roundhouse shin kick) or the knee joint (low side kick). 9. Hanuman Tawai Waen – Diamond hard Hanuman is one of the main characters in Ramakien. His superhuman strenght, his ability to fly and the capacity to change his

Muay Thai shape and size at will make him the perfect warrior. In this Mai Kred his gesture (showing Phra Ram’s ring to Nang Sita) is copied to execute a neck breaking double uppercut punch (core technique) under the chin of the opponent (chief point of attack). The technique can be executed in attack or in defense against punches, kicks or body locks. 10. Yuan Thod Hae – When a Tai-Yuan fisherman casts his net he swings his arms in a smooth and powerful way. This apparently harmless movement was copied by Siamese masters of old to create an awesome soft defense that can render the opponent’s straight kicks totally useless. The low parry (core technique) is always executed with a simultaneous counter swing kick (low, middle or high) that can be aimed at the leg, back or neck of the opponent (chief points of attack). 11. Thaye Kham Sao–Propping up a pillar (in house building, for example) in past times was no easy task. Several men were needed and each one had to know well his job. Pushing the base of the pillar with their feet, they could hold

it in place during this complex procedure. In a similar way, a knowledgeable fighter can push the standing leg of a kicking opponent (core technique) to counter his attack and, in this case, to seriously damage his opponent’s knee (chief point of attack). 12. Hong Pik Hak– When an Hongsa, the mythical swan, suffers a broken wing, he cannot fly anymore and may possibly die. When a Nak Muay Boran manages to dislocate his opponent’s shoulder or elbow joint or hurts his arm muscles (chief points of attack) he is on his way to victory.

The body weapon of choice for this Mai Kred is the tip of the elbow that has to hit the opponent’s arm with maximum power, possibly with a jump (core technique). 13. Sak Puang Malai – A magical tattoo that imitates a garland of flowers around the neck is a protective tool. However, this same body area (neck, breastbone, xiphoid) can be attacked with devastating results (chief points of attack). In fact, when a piercing elbow strike (core technique) connects with the opponent’s sternum, the damage inflicted can seal the breath or break the breast bone, in both cases leading to a quick stoppage. 14. Thaen Kwad Laan – Just like an old monk that sweeps the floor, a smart Nak Muay can apply a powerful low swing kick (core technique) to sweep the opponent to the floor. If the kick is correctly aimed at the opponent’s lower leg (the Achilles tendon is the preferred choice of the best fighters) even bulky aggressors can be taken down with relative ease (chief point of attack). 15. Fan Luk Buab – The tip of the elbow of a trained Nak Muay can be compared to a knife’s blade. When a slashing elbow strike (core technique) is aimed at the opponent’s Tzone (i.e., eyes, nose, lips) a nasty gash is often the result (chief point of attack). Even if the wound does not immediately cause a knock-out it nevertheless can lead to a serious hemorrhage that can stop most opponents by suddenly instilling fear in their minds. This psycho-combat

Sport Muay Thai applications Due to their extreme efficiency, some Mai Kred strategies are still in use in modern Muay Thai ring fighting. Some techniques have been modified to be fit for use in a well-regulated sport like modern Thai Boxing. Nonetheless, the best thai boxers do apply some Mai Kred to outsmart opponents in Thailand’s rings. Here are a few examples of a modern use of those ancient Mai Muay: • Uppercut counterattack against a straight punch, followed by low swing kick to the thigh (Erawan Soei Nga). • Faked straight left followed by a straight kick to the face (Bata Lob Pak) • Elbow block against middle swing kick and simultaneous spinning back elbow to the head (Hiran Muan Paen Din). • Fake a jab to the body and follow immediately with a swing shin kick to the neck (Naka Mud Badan). • Low parry against straight body kick followed by a low swing kick to the standing leg (Yuan Thod Hae)

Muay Thai • Against a middle swing kick to the rib cage, sidestep and catch the attacking leg. Counter quickly with a straight head punch and a low swing kick to the calf (Thaen Kwad Laan). • In a neck clinch situation you can use your open hands to push under the opponent’s chin to bend his head back and free yourself (Hanuman Tawai Waen). • Alternatively, you can check one of the opponent’s arm with your wrist and at the same time counter with an upward elbow strike to the throat or lower jaw (Fan Luk Buab).

Self-defence applications Mai Kred strategies have been used to defeat enemies on battlefields since immemorial times. Modern cities streets can be sometimes be compared to a new version of those battlefields. Therefore, in dangerous situations, even the extreme measures represented by Mai Kred are sometimes justified. Some of these advanced techniques are so effective that have been included in Muay Lert Rit syllabus, the ultimate Siamese hand to hand combat style. History of the Gunstock Warclub (Part 1) by Chief George Lepine, Okichitaw Indigenous Combat Arts

To secure the true appreciation of this unique weapon, we first need to understand the historical impression of how this battle was implemented. Throughout our tribal history, there was always a large variety of war clubs which were designed and extensively used throughout North America. It was very well known that every indigenous warrior regardless of their Nation or Tribal affiliation carried some form of serious impact weapon that they used specifically in combat regardless whether it was straight, curved, long, short, heavy or light. W ithin the warrior's battle instrument arsenal, the Gunstock Warclub always held a unique presence in various native societies. The Gunstock Warclub also provided a clear and pronounced visual indication of their status throughout the community as well as their distinction within their own warrior society.

raditionally as indigenous people, we are noted to use the term "Oral Tradition" which also implies how we shared our traditional teachings in reflection of education as well as through story. Many indigenous cultures including indigenous nations across the central plains did not have a formal writing system which could have been comparable to that of the English or the French. However a concept and artistic rendition of visual applications were used, however the writing of words, sentences and or stories have never been captured by our ancestors in the form of written text which would be understood or even accepted by any western society. I mention this because as a result of the lack of recorded documentation by our people, a great challenge existed for me in researching the

subject of the Gunstock Warclub and its affiliated applications and movements. For an indigenous knowledge keeper and martial artist, I had to be sure to fully recall as well as continue to document the stories that were told to me as I grew up over the years to accurately reflect its history and impact throughout our communities. The French and the English did on occasion document some observations with respect to their experiences with the indigenous Gunstock Warclub, but they subsequently recorded these perspectives in a limited fashion and usually only through some form of combat experience that was conducted during the early era of North America. The combination of our oral stories, traditional teachings as well as old documented records and accounts, paint an

accurate picture on how the Gunstock Warclub came to be such a significant combat weapon within our history. It has been argued that the Gunstock Warclub was a design that was specifically engineered within Tribal communities and with no help of any visual European presence or involvement. But through my years of teachings, research and education of this particular weapon, I feel quite confident that our Indigenous warriors did fashion their Gunstock Warclubs as practical combat weapons based on their visual experiences encountered through actual fighting engagements during the second half of the sixteenth century (1550-1600). Indigenous Warrior Societies began fashioning the Gunstock Warclub based on various weapon examples

noted throughout their respective regions and territories that were occupied by their adversaries. This was a direct result of indigenous experiences conducted through at least four military campaigns which were the French & Indian Wars, wars between the Thirteen American Colonies, Pontiac's War all of which were conducted from the 1680's and well into the 1700's. Much of this battle tested education and experience was gained as a result of our ancestors seeing graphic hand to hand skirmishes between various parties where the use of the spent musket with it subsequently being yielded by the barrel and whereby it is specifically used as an impact weapon, resulted in severe injury when it made contact with the enemy.

European Contact and Exposure To truly understand how the Notini-towinmistik (Gunstock Warclub) came to be, one only needs to see that these battle engagements eventually caused the Gunstock Warclub's birth and its relevant spread across North America during the 16th, 17th and 18th Centuries. This is further supported as a direct result that over the course of the next three centuries, British and French explorers gradually moved further and further west whereby they again continued to provide more visual experiences of the single firing musket. For example, the earliest flintlock musket that the Hudson's Bay Company (HBC) began to trade into the James Bay region was in the late 1600's. During the early fur-trade period, the HBC shipped over 300 flintlock muskets, over 2000 iron axes and over 8000 knives to one of their trading posts. During this period of the fur trade, the French pushed further westward and subsequently followed many ancient canoe routes of our Indigenous communities. This resulted in much intertribal and colonial contact throughout communities well across North America. Our direct exposure to items such as the flintlock musket as well as other metal products, greatly contributed to the development of indigenous weaponry as well as our warfare tactics which we conducted throughout North America.

The Flintlock Musket A period musket (e.g. Brown Bess Musket, 1722-1838) could weigh over 10lbs (5kg) with a length of around 60 inches (150cm). Keep in mind that at least 40 inches (110cm) of the musket was actually the barrel length of the weapon. The weapon was lethal, but it also came with its own mechanical challenges as well as field combat usage problems, especially when it came to its use during the style of guerilla warfare which had been practiced in North America for centuries, prior to colonial contact. I'll provide an overview of some of the challenges that the musket had when it was used in battlefield engagements and why one would simply rotate this firearm implement around and subsequently use it as a large clubbing device during lethal skirmishes. This information will also give you a clearer picture on why we fashioned our warclubs the way we did upon its discovery. Understand that a period musket back in the day had on average, a maximum effective shooting range of about 160 meters (175 yards) or a little more. But in reality, muskets at this time only had a true effective killing range of about 46 meters (50 yards). It was at this distance that the weapon was fired to ensure that it inflicted the greatest damage upon the enemy. It should be noted that the "effective killing range" did not mean the range at which the weapon's round was able to hit a target, it actually meant the range at which the round that is fired retains a large amount of killing power. The success of fire engagements or the rate of fire from a musket was totally based on its user. The average serviceman could be expected to fire anywhere between 3 to 4 shots per minute, or 3 to 4 shots every 10 to 20 seconds. Muskets also had the challenge of getting jammed as a result of gunpowder build up known as powder fouling. In the heat of combat, black powder would quickly foul the barrel, making it more and more difficult to reload a round after each shot, or an increased risk of a round actually jamming in the barrel while trying to load it. Musket users even used smaller caliber musket balls to help mitigate this inconvenience and to improve the rate of fire. One last issue I should note is that the flintlock firing mechanism on a musket was usually found to be prone to misfires and these mechanisms also encountered serious operational deficiencies while trying to use them in wet conditions.

The Challenges of the Musket in Combat For the flintlock musket, it actually worked best in open field battle engagements. Once it came into fruition in North America, it's tactical use had to change drastically as a direct result of the fighting style used by indigenous fighters which had been employed for thousands of years before contact. This new guerilla style of fighting was found to be incredibly alarming even to most experienced colonial military servicemen. Indigenous warfare in North America used the application of guerilla style tactics whereby we employed a concept of quick hit and run tactics. We also utilized the environment for military advantage which assisted our tactical prowess. We effectively applied camouflage and concealment through the use of foliage, hills, rock formations, lighting, darkness as well as weather conditions. We could discreetly approach an enemy, or hit them head-on in a very loud manner to intimidate, or apply a unique use of attacking angles to simply cause confusion to the enemy. Now place yourself in the defensive position, you are being aggressively attacked. Remember, before you fire upon the enemy, they would actually need to be within 50 feet of your position if you want to effectively stop them within the musket's killing range. A flintlock musket can only be fired, reloaded and fired again every 10 to 20 seconds - to be consistent with the noted times, one would require great discipline, especially during a battle situation. Also take this into consideration, your musket experiences a weapon jam, powder fouling, or a misfire preventing it from sending a round downrange.

Now what do you do - would you turn it around and use it like a CLUB? Historically, our warriors could see in actual combat the physical challenges of using a spent musket in hand to hand confrontations. Most of this difficulty was as a direct result of its length and weight. The flintlock musket was also not designed to be actually used as an impact weapon in combat. Even the barrels were machined smooth which made it hard to grip securely. As well, the flintlock had certain areas that were susceptible to breaking upon impact whether it hit the ground or was smashed against a solid object like a tree. However, the biggest challenge for the flintlock musket was its lack of reloading speed once a round was sent out the barrel. Having said this, its also important to point out that the average person can run a distance of 50 meters anywhere between 7.5 to 10 seconds. More than enough time to cover the ground and conduct a physical assault before the weapon could be loaded, pointed and then fired. Looking at the combat challenges of the musket during that era, one can come to see why our warclubs were noted to be effective battle instruments and why they continued to be a part of our indigenous combat methods through our history. One should not discount that the use of the musket (as well as other firearms) played a significant role throughout indigenous warfare from the time when they were introduced. However it's also important to understand that even though firearms had become the primary combat weapon, warriors continued to carry and apply the effective use of Warclubs within their arsenal for the duration of our combative history. The use and application of the warclub was used right up to the end of the last significant battles throughout the Great Plains (1877) and up to the end of the Northwest Rebellion (1885). When most people hear the word Kyusho, or the words Pressure Points, it is one of two things that come to mind ... Self Defense or a healing modality such as Acupuncture or Massage Therapy. In each instance, they are correct. There are some who focus mostly on the self defense aspect and other whose focus is more into the healing. I personally know of several people who trained with me and became so excited about manipulating the Pressure Points for self defense that they enrolled in Acupuncture classes, Massage Classes and Chiropractic Classes. Each area of study requires extensive focus on the mechanics of the body and how the practitioner can "assist" the body into healing itself. This is not an end all be all and each patient must be accountable for their health and lifestyle habits. This video will focus on how we can use the same 5 points for both healing and self defense. Jukoshin Ryu. An effective self-defense system. The Jukoshin Ryu style of Jiu Jitsu was designed to be a powerful and definitive tool in hand-to-hand combat. Biographies of Shaolin Great Masters - Shi Degen Probably many of our kind readers may not have ever heard the name of Shi Degen, however he was one of the most important masters regarding the transmission of Shaolin Kung Fu. He lived during the most chaotic times in China: practically born with the fall of the Qing Dynasty, he saw very closely the struggle of the warlords, the war with Japan and the cultural revolution among other conflicts. Master Shi Degen, Head Trainer for the warrior monks, he was also a trues expert in Traditional Chinese Medicine. His teaching was always very strict and under his tutelage sprung great martial artists, such as his closest disciple, Zhu Tianxi.

Origins Master Shi Degen (释德根), surnamed Han, was born in 1914 in the Guan Di Miao village in the Gong district of Henan province. When he was 6 years old he entered the Chaomi Temple (炒米寺) and at 16 he joined the Shaolin Temple and studied under the tutelage of the monk Su Yin. Another of his masters was Venerable Wu Shan Lin (1875 to 1970). Master Degen studied without intermission and very diligently, mastering more than 100 taolu (forms) of both empty hands and weapons, among which he stood out in Luohan Quan, Shaolin Er Shi Si Lu Tan Tui, Shaolin Xinyiba. He was well known and respected for his knowledge of the different styles of Shaolin and for his amazing leg technique (Yuan Yang Jiao 鸳鸯脚). As his closest disciple, Master Zhu Tianxi, recalls in an interview: “Shi Degen was a very simple person, always wearing the same worn-out traditional Chinese clothing and torn fabric slippers.”

He also recalls that when he first saw Master Shi Degen, the impression that he gave him was that of an ordinary person: he was extremely thin and he wore simple and somewhat deteriorated clothes, so Zhu Tianxi came to seriously doubt that he was the famous warrior Shaolin monk. “I found it hard to believe. But when he started showing his skills my jaw dropped. He only showed two movements but it looked like a tornado, the Sheng Fa has such refined technique and so many changes that I was just turning around the Master without even knowing what and how he had done it and through where he took his leg out. I tried to imitate him, but what I did had nothing to do with what he had done. I simply didn’t have the ability to move my body the way he move his and that was really frustrating. After this demonstration - Zhu Tianxi explained -, I decided to continue my Kung Fu studies with him and from then on I no longer separated from my master. Meeting him was the greatest luck of my entire life." Master Zhu Tianxi assured.

Head Coach at the Shaolin Temple In the autumn of 1946, Master Shi Degen was requested by the Shaolin Temple to fill the position of Martial Arts Head Coach for the warrior monks. After the liberation of China, he took upon himself teaching in schools and coaching the exhibition groups in the province. At that time there was much poverty in Shaolin and ta rather difficult environment to live in. This was due to the fact that in the 1950s, in the wake of the wars and various historical events at Shaolin Temple, most of the strong young men had enroll as soldiers while others had stayed home to become peasants and help their families. Only the elderly, the weakest and crippled people had remained in the care of the monastery. They had only a few fields to feed on. In the 1960s, a natural disaster hit the country and the situation worsened for everyone. In the Shaolin Temple they ran out of food and started suffering from

hunger, which led to having fewer and fewer monks. According to some accounts of that time, there were so few that they could be counted on the fingers. Nonetheless, Grand Master Shi Degen continued to support the Shaolin temple with his excellent Chinese Medicine and his Kung Fu. They only had a few fields to feed on. In the 1960s, a natural disaster hit the country and the situation worsened for everyone. In the Shaolin Temple they ran out of food and started suffering from hunger, which led to having fewer and fewer monks. According to some accounts of that time, there were so few that they could be counted on the fingers. Nonetheless, great master Shi Degen continued to support the Shaolin temple with his excellent Chinese Medicine and his Kung Fu. At the end of the 60s (it's not quite clear), he was called to participate in a project in a famous theater in the Henan

The Duel "Defending Shaolin's Honor" Many stories are circulating about this duel and for that reason I have limited myself to sharing the most popular version, that is, the one that I have most heard from other masters who have told me about it. It was 1934, at that time Shi Degen was 20 years old, and he along with three other brothers from the Shaolin Temple traveled to the city of Xi'an to be ordained. In the Xi'an market, they came across a stall where some itinerant martial artists had a sign that read: “Spears prick on both sides of the Yellow River; in empty hand fighting, the fist hits north and south; the legs kick Shaolin monks.” Seeing this, Degen and his brothers were offended and decided to go talk to them to have the poster removed, but the traveling martial artists didn't listen to them and

insisted on keeping the poster, telling the monks that it was not their business. Shi Degen insisted several times but the group leader persisted in his negative attitude, even ridiculing Degen and his brothers right there. Thus, Degen, at the insistence of that man, accepted the challenge by signing the resignation agreement that in the event that one suffered a serious injury or died, the other would be free of charges. In those days this type of arrangement was very common. During the confrontation, they surrounded Degen and inadvertently injured his ankle that would leave him lame for the rest of his life. Shi Degen counterattacked with only a fist punch, hitting his opponent, the group's leader, and killing him on the spot. Finally, the poster was burned. This is one of the many stories that have been passed on by word of mouth among Shaolin disciples, this being the most popular version as I mentioned earlier. By 1968 Shi Degen was already very ill and died of pulmonary tuberculosis, his remains were buried in his hometown. Without a doubt, he played a very important role in the preservation of traditional Shaolin Martial Arts and deserves to be remembered as one of the greatest Shaolin Kung Fu Masters of all time. A Hwarang’s Journey By Master David Kijek

Preface by Grandmaster Taejoon Lee: As mentioned in the last article, we will be featuring some of our most l o y a l H w a r a n g Wa r r i o r s o f t h e Modern Age, chronicling their journey to Hwa Rang Do® as a common man to becoming and transforming into a “Flowering Knight,” in the service of humankind. Master David Kijek, 5th Dan Black Sash in Hwa Rang Do® and a Board Member for the World Hwa Rang Do® Association (Non-profit Humanitarian Organization) began training in the martial arts while in high school over 41 years ago.

In this article he explains his journey from growing up in a small rural town in the middle of Wisconsin to serving as a leader in the World Hwa Rang Do® Association. In addition to his martial art responsibilities, Master Kijek serves as the President and CEO WEA Member Benefits, which is a company that provides insurance and financial services to educators. Millions of people participate in martial arts around the globe, but how many will still be training 40 years from now? Why is it that so many start but so few continue their training for their lifetime? I believe the typical person begins martial arts because they (or in the case of a child, their parents) are in search of self-defense skills, fitness, or discipline. Others begin because they think it would be cool to be able to move like the actors they see in the movies. Regardless of the reason why a person begins, it is unlikely that same reason will be why someone continues their training throughout their lifetime. In this article, Master Kijek explains how he got involved in martial arts, the lessons he learned, and the reasons he continues to train in Hwa Rang Do. The Beginning I have been fascinated by the martial arts as long as I can remember. My father was a very handy man and loved woodworking. As a child, I remember after dinner going down to his workroom and watching him work. As most kid’s typically do, I would lose my patience and start to goof around. That didn’t sit well with Dad, because there were many ways I could get injured given the power tools in his shop. Rather than just tell me to leave, he gave me the option to sit quietly and look at books on his bookshelf. I was only around 4 years old at the time, and I could not read. So, I looked for books with pictures. That is where I saw my first martial art book, and that is when my love for martial arts began. There were two books, American Police Jiu Jitsu and Thirty-Six Secret Knock-Out Blows Without The Use of Fists. Both books were written and copywritten by S. J. Jorgensen in 1930. These two books met my needs in that they were very small and fit in my hands, and they had pictures. I would often ask my Mom to be my practice partner so I could act out what was being done in the photos. My Dad had a woodworking widget called a push stick, used to push wood through a circular saw. I liked using that with my Mom because it resembled a handgun. I even drew a cylinder and trigger on it to add an element of realism. My Mom recounts the stories of me spending hours with her going through the different techniques from those books. After my Dad passed away, my Mom found several other books my Dad had collected. There were books on Jujitsu, boxing, grappling, along with notes and drawings of techniques. Although I didn’t realize it growing up, I have come to realize we both shared an interest in martial arts.

As I got older, my interest continued to be sparked by shows like The Green Hornet, KungFu, and I Spy. I found that whenever I wrestled with my buddies, I always pretended I was a martial artist. My friends thought I was a bit odd because they liked boxing and wrestling. In large part because back then martial arts were not as popular as they are today. Finally, in 1979 when I was 17 years old, my brother told me about a guy he met who recently relocated from Utah. He said this guy was planning to teach martial arts in his basement, and he was hosting a demonstration for interested students. Needless to say, I went. I took a couple of friends with me and we became his students. At the time, I had no idea what art it was, and frankly I didn’t care. All I knew was that it was a martial art and I was finally going to be able to really train. On the first day of class he gave us a handout with a brief history, training rules, and some terminology. He charged $18 per month and classes were on Tuesday and Thursday nights, and Saturday mornings. He called his school the Korean American Hwa Rang Do Club. He told us his father was a career military man, and that growing up he lived on different military bases and that is where he studied martial arts. Along the way he met a master of Hwa Rang Do and that’s how he learned it. From then on, I believed I was in Hwa Rang Do. He encouraged us to buy the book called, The Ancient Martial Art of Hwa Rang Do, written by Joo Bang Lee. He explained that it was the same system, but from different masters. So, I bought the book and studied it relentlessly. That book was one of three books in the series, so I eventually bought volume two and three. I was hooked! I trained constantly and eventually became a senior student in the club. One day at the end of class, my teacher announced that he was going to be moving back to Utah for a job opportunity. I was shocked by the news. What was I going to do? I was only a ½ black belt and there was no one else to teach me. My options were to join a rival school that had recently opened in a nearby town or quit.

A month before I began training, I met a girl named Wendy who would eventually become my wife. This year marks our 35th wedding anniversary. She has supported my passion for martial arts from the beginning. She knew the predicament I was in and knew that I would not be happy quitting or switching schools. Fortunately, she insisted I couldn’t do either. After discussing things with my teacher, he told me I could take over the club eventhough I was not yet a black belt. Given my options, I had no other choice. So, I went to my parents and asked them if I could open a school in our basement. To my surprise they said yes. Knowing now about my Dad’s interest in martial arts, I shouldn’t have been surprised he would agree to it. A handful of students continued to train after my teacher moved. I was 18 at the time and attending a junior college, so I also began recruiting students from school. To continue my training, I would travel to Utah for private lessons and weeklong seminars in the mountains. When it came time for me to move away for college, I left my club to my brother and then eventually my cousin. While away at college, I started an intermural martial art club at my University. It was there that I really expanded my network and was able to delve into many other systems. Along the way, I met an assistant professor who had heard that I was teaching Hwa Rang Do. He was familiar with the art from his work teaching law enforcement and bodyguards. He was a handgun expert and taught defensive firearms tactics at a bodyguard school in Aspen, CO. It turns out that Supreme Grand Master Dr. Joo Bang Lee and one of his students founded that school. Rather than travel back and forth to Colorado for training, my professor friend decided to train with me. In exchange, he would teach me about handguns and defensive firearms tactics. One day, he invited me to go to Aspen Colorado with him to assist in teaching handgun tactics and to meet with Supreme Grand Master’s student. After meeting him and comparing techniques, I knew that what I had been studying was NOT Hwa Rang Do! It had similarities, but it was different enough for me to know I had been lied to.

I was crushed. Discovering after all that time, that I was not actually training in Hwa Rang Do was extremely discouraging. Over the years, I spent time collecting all the books on Hwa Rang Do, copies of every magazine article ever written about Hwa Rang Do and educated hundreds of students on the history of Hwa Rang Do. To learn that my training was not in Hwa Rang Do was devasting to say the least. Soon after, I confronted my teacher and stopped training with him. I then started teaching under my own name, Dave Kijek’s Martial Art Academy. Despite the let down, I was determined to continue my training. After college, I moved to Minneapolis, MN, and started a job selling insurance. I began teaching in a friend’s basement while also conducting corporate wellness classes for a Fit-for-Life program. Six months later, Wendy and I got married and we moved back to Wisconsin to start a new job in Madison, WI. It was there that I started to attend a Tae Kwon Do club at a local YMCA. After a short period of time, the director of the program offered me my own club and I began teaching again under my own name. This continued for the next few years. Along the way, I decided it was time from me to find my own location. One day I drove by a dance studio that was under construction and I met with the owner to see if she was willing to sublease to me. She agreed and I was in business. In 1989, I was reading a martial art magazine and there was a full-page ad offering memberships into the World Hwa Rang Do Association. I couldn’t believe my

eyes! I completed the application and received my membership passport. I was now officially a member of the World Hwa Rang Do Association. Being a member, I learned that I could train at any Hwa Rang Do school and I could buy official Hwa Rang Do equipment, so I ordered a Hwa Rang Do duffle bag. This bag would ultimately be responsible for introducing me to Grand Master Taejoon Lee, the eldest son of Supreme Grand Master Dr. Joo Bang Lee. Several months passed and I did not receive my bag. I was informed it was back ordered. Being persistent, I continued to call on a regular basis checking in on the status. One day I found myself talking to Grand Master Lee. I was so excited but nervous to speak with him as I had been following him and his family in books and magazines for many years. He asked me where I was from and what style I studied? Feeling embarrassed and somewhat intimidated, I did not have the courage to tell him I was training in a fake Hwa Rang Do system for the past 10 years, so I decided to tell him I was in an Americanized Tae Kwon Do system and that I had my own club. I told him I was interested in becoming a student of Hwa Rang Do. He explained what I would have to do in-order to make that happen. The list was challenging and included hosting a seminar, conducting a large-scale marketing campaign, and if accepted, I would have to discontinue teaching my students the old curriculum. I, along with my students, would have to start from white belt again. In order to learn, I would have to travel to CA for training. After spending a significant amount of time on the call, I felt I could not hang up until I came clean. So, I apologized and explained my story to him. He was extremely gracious and understanding. He assured me that he had heard similar stories countless times. He gave me assurance that if I met the requirements he laid out, I would be able to convert my school to an authentic Hwa Rang Do school and continue to train.

â€œRegardless of the reason why a person begins, it is unlikely that same reason will be why someone continues their training throughout their lifetime.â€?

Challenge Accepted The seminar happened and meeting Grand Master Taejoon Lee changed my life forever. Seeing him in action was simply amazing. I had been to several martial art seminars and around a lot of other martial artist, but I had never witnessed someone move with the speed, power, and grace as he did. In addition to being a phenomenal martial artist he was very kind and extremely personable. At the conclusion of the weekend, he invited me into Hwa Rang Do and agreed to convert my school. I received an honorary 1st degree black sash and began my official training. On my first trip to headquarters, I met Supreme Grand Master. I will never forget the overwhelming emotions of that moment. I was in a room visiting with several black sashes and masters when all of a sudden, everyone jumped to their feet and a master called us to attention. I had no idea what was happening. Then I looked towards the door and there was Do Joo Nim, The Owner of the Way. My heart was racing, and I barely could put two words together. I am pretty sure he realized I was a mess, because after the bow he came over to me and wrapped his arms around me and welcomed me to headquarters. Then he invited me into his office, and we talked for hours. Both Do Joo Nim and Grandmaster Lee emulated the concept of Um/Yang. They were as nice as they were powerful. I knew I was in the right place. I would continue to travel back and forth and tested for my official first-degree black sash in April 1992. It is interesting to note that my first test in the World Hwa Rang Do Association was for my black sash. I had no idea what to expect having never gone through the color belt ranks. What I did know is that I was standing before Do Joo Nim (The 58th generation owner of the way), Grand Master Lee, other masters, and many black sashes. I also knew that only one person out of thousand ever made it to their black sash. Fortunately for me I passed.

With my black sash test behind me, I had a renewed confidence and energy that allowed me to focus on growing Hwa Rang Do in the Midwest. Over the next 25 years my team and I developed scores of black sashes and implemented nine schools in WI, three in Illinois, and two in Minnesota. In addition, our black sashes opened schools in Oregon, Washington, and Florida and we sent three apprentices to work at the World Headquarters in CA. During this same period, Wendy and I raised our son, I continued building my career in the insurance and finance industry, and I went to graduate school to earn my M.B.A (Masters of Business Administration). I mention these things because all too often people use family, work, and school as reasons why they are not able to continue training. When in fact, I believe these things provide even more reasons why we need to train. Hwa Rang Do teaches us a great deal about maximizing our potential, and it gives us the skills necessary to stay focused and mentally strong. One of our training principles states; “If one’s mind is made up to learn, there will be success.”

Lessons Learned Grandmaster Lee says, “We want our members to live in a way that their actions meet their intentions. Too many people live a life with good intentions, but don’t have the discipline to take action to see things through.” Longevity in anything requires perseverance. Perseverance means, persistence in doing something despite difficulty or delay in achieving success. If you are going to sustain your training over a lifetime, you are going to have to learn to persevere through many challenges. Remember, just as diamonds are formed under pressure so is transformation. The more you stay the course and push through challenges, the more it will become a habit and the more valuable your knowledge will be. When explaining what training in Hwa Rang Do is like, I tell people that it is everything you’d expect a true martial art to be. Hwa Rang Do literally translates to the Way of the Flowering of Manhood (Knights). It is a traditional system that focuses on developing our maximum human

potential. Regardless of our age or physical abilities, it meets us where we are at and it makes us better. Hwa Rang Do is based on the universal principle of opposing forces Um/Yang (Yin/Yang in Chinese). It is represented by a circle divided by an “s” shaped line in the middle. The two halves swirled together signify they are not two independent forces but rather two opposite forces which interact with each other to form a whole. It is a fundamental truth that you need to know what hot is in order to understand what cold is, what dark is to understand what light is. (good and evil, fast and slow, heavy and light, male and female, tall and short, strong and week, straight and circular, etc.) This fundamental truth is present in all that is, and it is at the center of Hwa Rang Do. As a result, Hwa Rang Do incorporates both hard style and soft style movements in one complete system. Unlike most systems that incorporate different martial arts into their school in an effort to offer both hard and soft techniques, Hwa Rang Do is one consistent system that has been that way since its formation over 2,000 years ago. In addition, it incorporates 4,000 offensive and defensive empty hand techniques, 108 weapons broken down into 20 categories, mental training including breathing exercises to develop internal energy and passive and active meditation, and oriental medicine techniques including acupuncture, acupressure, bone-setting, revival techniques, cupping techniques and herbal medicine. Training in an art like Hwa Rang Do is a blessing and a curse. The blessing is that there is so much to learn. The curse is the same! To this day, whenever I train with my teachers, I still feel like a beginner. And I believe that is one of the main reasons I continue to train. When you stop learning, you stop growing. Do Joo Nim states, “When a goldfish lives in a cup, the cup is its whole world.” It is a wonderful reminder that we are to remain humble and never tire of learning. No matter how much you know, there is always more you can learn. Another valuable lesson I have learned throughout the years, is that being accountable to others is a wonderful motivator to keep pushing ahead and improving. Whether in your personal life or in your martial art life, being accountable to others pushes us to step-up and be better. When you are ready, I highly encourage you to teach and pass-on your knowledge to others. This helps to motivate yourself to train when you are tired, sore, stressed, or whatever. Knowing people are relying on you gives you extra energy to do more than you might otherwise do. Be grateful. No matter what you have accomplished in life, it is likely that you could not have done it without the assistance of others. For this reason, you must remember to always be grateful for their help and to pay it forward. I am forever grateful for the trust, love, and patience shown to me by Do Joo Nim and Grandmaster Taejoon Lee. For without their teaching, sacrifice, and leadership, neither I nor generations of martial artists would know about Hwa Rang Do and all the benefits it provides. I am also grateful to the students and their family members who assisted and supported me over the years. I am confident without their help,

the success we saw in the Midwest would not have been possible. Finally, being a Christian, I believe that God opens and closes doors. In reflecting back to my experiences as a child and finding the books on my father’s shelf, learning from my first teacher that there was a martial art called Hwa Rang Do, meeting my wife and listening to her wise counsel to not quit, meeting my professor friend who introduced me to Do Joo Nim’s student in Aspen, and opening the martial art magazine to find an application to join the World Hwa Rang Do Association, I know that God was there. So, for me, I go back to what I said at the beginning of the article. What brought me to the martial arts is not what has kept me training. I started off because I thought martial arts was cool and I wanted to be able to move like the people I saw in the books and in the movies. My desire was inward focused and based on training for my own personal benefits. Over time my reasons to train changed. Today, my reasons to train are outward looking rather than inward. I train to help others and to pass Hwa Rang Do on to the next generation. I tell my students that Hwa Rang Do is like a vitamin that simply makes everything we do better through developing our body, mind, and spirit. If my reason to train remained constant from the day I started, I would likely have quit years ago. But fortunately, I have learned over time that Hwa Rang Do offers so much more than that. Do Joo Nim says it best, “Even a monkey can be taught to kick and punch; human beings are not measured by their physical nature, but their spiritual nature.” A true warrior pursues truth. And by doing so, embodies the desire to learn and challenge themselves to continually improve. For me, Hwa Rang Do provides the tools needed to live life to its fullest and to become better human beings. No matter where you are in your training, my hope for you is that you will find the benefits of Hwa Rang Do, a true martial way, and you will ultimately train not for yourself, but to improve the people around you, thus improving the world and honoring God.

“Mui Fa Chong”, or Plum Blossom Training Station is one of the many training methods practiced in Kung Fu, including Wing Chun, which greatly helps the practitioner to develop coordination, balance, concentration, power and strength. The Mui Fa Chong is characterized by five wooden stakes stacked on the ground and with a final ar rangement equal to the natu r a l composition of the plum blossom, in which a stake is placed in the center. It is said that the same initial part of the denomination “Mui” was dedicated to the nun Ng Mui of the time as it has a term of endearment equal to plum blossom, as a form resulting from seeing Mui Fa Chong from above. In ancient times, high-level footwork work was carried out on high poles and sharp blades were placed between them. In training they certainly served to urge and develop a better balance, but in extreme combat or duel situations they could cause injury or death of the opponent by falling from the posts.

It would be completely useless to make the diameter of each post equal to or greater than the size of the foot, it would make no sense, it would lose all the benefits above mentioned and it would be insufficient to properly make a Mui Fa Chong in itself. The diameter of each log is considered to be 13 cm, or to be more precise, equal to half the length of the practitioner's foot. So the surface is much smaller compared to that of the foot, and you will have to concentrate the weight in the center of each pole, while the legs and knees are perfectly aligned to maintain the right balance. As for the height of each single pole, it varies with the skill of the practitioner, when working on them the body remains raised, the degree of difficulty is increased because gravity and the risk of losing control of the central line come into play. Initially, the practitioner should consider a height of each single stationing not exceeding 15 or 20 cm from the ground, thus reducing the risk of any injuries caused by accidental falls. For this purpose, the use of appropriate footwear is initially recommended in order to offer any possible protection. Obviously, their positioning in the ground at a certain depth will have to be useful to support the weight of the practitioners, and the distance between them must be equal to the correct mother position â€œĂ?i Gi Kim Yeung Maâ€?, or alternatively the measure of the shoulders width. Having the availability of a place where to build the Mui Fa Chong on a small land is an excellent choice, but failing that, the obstacle could be overcome by another

system devised and implemented many years ago by the writer and now used by many. All this using a suitable square or circular wooden base, and placing on it the five wooden pallets previously shaped and anchored at the appropriate distance, thus avoiding they can move from the desired position. This new tool, made this way by my personal experience, will be stable even if it is not stacked on the ground, as the same weight of the practitioner will keep it firmly on the ground, obviously avoiding waxed or slippery floors. Furthermore, once it is used, the tool can be stored in a certain place, since by turning it upside down it will take the appearance of being a low table, with the logs looking themselves like regular table legs. Another even simpler method to build a portable Mui Fa Chong consists of using empty metal cans such as those commonly used for paints or food preserves, making sure that all the cans are of the same diameter, height and weight. Cans can be filled with concrete or stones whose weight varies, but being positioned at the appropriate distances according to personal size, they are useful for a good workout. In Mui Fa Chong, usually, the practice starts in the Yi Gi Kim Yeung Ma position, then rotating in Choh Ma on the stakes, to carry out hand techniques in the air, such as punches, single and complex blocks, etc. Through the excellent use of footwork as Huen Bo or Sam Kock Bo, thus combining all the movements, you become able to flow in any part without a fixed sequence; there are many different exercises in the Wing Chun Cwcso system to develop this training. After a period of practice, the balance and strength of the legs will increase considerably and it will be positive in

kicking, evading, moving and having a good command of the movements. At the beginning of the Mui Fa Chong training, during the footwork, it's easy erring looking down on your feet, it would be appropriate and advisable to avoid all this, as it would become a bad habit that you could keep doing even when you are not using this tool. Once the practitioner gets a good stability and confidence with the posts, he will begin to evaluate the idea of training with a partner and fight on the posts, using bare-handed techniques and practicing the Chi Sao. All this by unbalancing the opponent to remove and acquire his position of advantage, exploiting his attack force (Loi Lao Loi Soang, Lat Sao Jick Jong), and performing the desired technique. In fact, if the movements in speed improves from place to place, maintaining a good balance and structure, the fight is perfected; it is important to practice it correctly, from a slow and precise start, in order to equal the footwork on the ground. To stay balanced and maintain the center of gravity, one must be aware of where it is in all situations; this may sound strange, but many martial artists ignore it. In this regard, it should be remembered that the center of gravity of a woman is much lower than that of a man, in fact with reference to the ground, it appears to be approximately at a height equal to 53% in women and 55% in men. This knowledge offers the Wing Chun practitioner the opportunity to consider it as a reference for any type of movement and remain well balanced and structured with respect to the opponent.

www.cwcso.eu When changing the position, it is easy to vary the center of gravity from its foundation such as the feet, for this reason if the center itself does not have a good set-up, the consequent attack or defense will be weak in power. The continuous practice on the wooden stakes of the various positions of Wing Chun will bring us improvements to maintain our center of gravity and therefore a good balance for the practice. For instance, assuming the "Sei Ping Ma" (Square Horse), 50% of the weight will be distributed on each leg with the toes pointed forward, while the spine will be kept straight to increase balance and breath control. The Mui Fa Chong also finds its great utility in kicking, using an appropriate footwork between kicks; standing on the base, you can flow by performing various types of kicks studied in Wing Chun and hitting the individual strains taken into consideration, varying with sequences dictated by the circumstances of the moment. All this obviously improves the flexibility and skills of the practitioner in kicking with power, developing a quality different from the usual one acquired on the stakes. At higher levels of ability, you undertake the practice on Mui Fa Chong of weapons studied in Wing Chun (Bart Charm Dao and Luk Dim Boon Gwun), moving with the footwork and taking care of all the details found in the use of same. All this will increase the difficulty in balancing and moving our body, also considering the relative weight of the long stick, for example. So Mui Fa Chong turns out to be a vital tool in the Wing Chun system, where the practitioner will acquire good benefit, improving his or her footwork, Yin and Yang and a greater control of the center line. The skills of Wing Chun also reside in these principles, of which they have a way of simplifying the techniques, but which perhaps require a lifetime to refine them and not make them remain raw like the unfinished work by a good sculptor.

Sifu David Delannoy presents his second work, focused on Jeet Kune Do and Self-Defense and built like a puzzle. It highlights and puts into practice some very important points in self-defense, such as the three phases of an aggression, body movement and shifting, opening of the visual field, response to an aggression according to law, physical destruction, vital areas, etc. With respect to the doing away of the physical threat, one of the essential principles of the Philippine martial arts is applied: the overriding of the attacking member and the importance of immediate responding to an aggression immediately when they hit us. Our response to aggression is simply proportional and immediate to the attack. Then, we configure the puzzle by adding elements depending on the development of the situation. Sifu Delannoy explains in detail the vital points and essential areas, the pinching, how to protect against a boxer, displacements and visual field, protections and destructions against simple attacks, reactions to strangulations, grips and headbutting, how to use the attackerâ€™s body as a shield, defenses against stick and knife attacks, the use of everyday objects to defend ourselves. In the same way that many weapons have been developed to provide advantages in combat, the human body has also improved the ways of using its natural weapons, that is, its structural components head, trunk and limbs, for the purpose of attack and defense. In Japan, empty hand combat techniques have become so effective that they have been studied and applied against any type of opponent, whether armed or not. Shaolin Hung Gar hrough the way how the tiger techniques are practiced in everyday training, the bones and muscles are greatly strengthened. The powerful claws techniques mimic the nature and character of the animal and form tearing and scratching tools. The attacks of the tiger are always frontal and straight. The tiger style is often regarded as the most important of the five animal styles. This perception is probably due to a misunderstanding. Many Hung Gar practitioners consider the name of the first main form "Gung Gee Fook Fu Kuen" and see the word (Chinese character) "Fu", which means Tiger. The same word is found in the name of the second main form

č™Ž of Hung Gar style, "Fu Hok Seung Yin Kuen". Therefore, many Hung Gar practitioners assume that special attention must be paid to the tiger. According to the traditions, the name of the first main form refers to the strongest animal in the Ling Nam Mountains in southern China, the tiger. "Fook Fu Kuen" or in English "the tiger defeating fist" indicates that the practitioner, who exercises this form intensively enough, could even defeat the strongest animal. In the second main form the reference to the tiger in the name of the form really refers to the tiger techniques. The most important aspects of tiger techniques are the strength of the muscles, tendons, and bones. In particular, the limbs and the

back are strengthened. The punches are done with the heel of the hands. Very often, particularly in earlier times, the "claws" are used to tear the opponent. If the legends are to be believed, whole pieces of flesh were often torn apart from the enemy. My own experience while learning of the tiger techniques can described as followed: I was very early very enthusiastic about the tiger techniques, but the true value of the techniques came to light only after a few

years. First, the body must be strong enough, the fingers and heel of the hands conditioned, and the techniques clean to be able to be performed with proper body application. It seems my students follow the same learning curve. They too are instantly inspired by the techniques of tiger style. Many, however, very quickly realize that the techniques are only of limited use without appropriate training.

Young Children and the Positive Effects of Martial Arts Quite often I get asked, “Why do you only begin to train children from four years old…?” Well firstly, until the age of four your child’s main teacher and trainer is normally you – mum or dad. Before your child starts any organised sporting activity, he or she mneeds to learn a few things… My names is Sifu Dace and I have been teaching Wing Chun Kung Fu since 2008. I started as most instructors do, by assisting my W ing Chun I n s t r u c t o r. W h e n I moved to Leamington Spa I took my training to the next level and become a certified instructor. Then I got this awesome opportunity – to open my own Wing Chun International school in Oxford and Didcot, becoming a dir ect student of Master Andrew Cameron. Over the last two years I have been learning the real depth of the Wing Chun system thanks to Master Andrew and I pass this on to all my students, adults and children.

Wing Chun International Martial arts training impact on young children I find it very rewarding to teach children as young as four years old and then seeing them progressing into our adult classes. I would like to give some insights for other instructors and maybe even encourage them to start up sessions for young children. Thats why I decided to share my research and knowledge of martial arts for the positive impact it can have on young children and their development.

When is your child ready to join an organised sports activity or a martial art school? Your child’s ability to participate in organised sport activities or martial art classes depends on a few factors: • Can your child communicate with other children and an instructor? • Is your child ready to listen and follow an instructor? These are some useful skills your child could have before joining Wing Chun Kung Fu especially at my schools in WCI Oxford or WCI Didcot. • Can move around the room – crawling, marching, running, jumping, climbing • Can move objects – throw, catch, punch, kick • Can talk – ask to go to the toilet, ask for help, for a drink • Can answer simple “yes” and “no” questions. • Can take off their shoes and coats put them on again • Can go to the toilet independently Most importantly, after starting Wing Chun, your child must want to participate, enjoy the activity and are happy to stay with instructor and other children without a guardian in the dojo, the exception of course being their first trial lesson... Children who are taken to activities that are not appropriate for their abilities or their development stage are most likely to develop a bad feeling towards these activities. I have had parents pushing their children to join in and try, and it often it ends up the same – the child refuses and does not want to learn Wing Chun Kung Fu. In class I emphasise to children that they and I do martial arts because we want to do it, not because their parents tell them to do it.

What type of sports activities are best suited for children between the ages of four to six? Four to six year old children lear n best from experimenting and making mistakes in a safe environment. It is important for children to have fun, try out new things, following simple explanations and demonstrations focusing on one thing at a time. At this stage there is no need for competition as they do not help the child to learn new skills. The best sport activity is the one that will develop mobility skills â€“ running, crawling, jumping, throwing, etc. I suggest all parents to do their own research into martial arts, to make sure their children are doing exercises that help their body to a balanced

development and are not focused on one or two types of training like katas or sparring. The purpose of our Little Dragons Programme is not just to teach your child Wing Chun Kung Fu, it is also to promote the childâ€™s healthy development and growth whilst preparing them for the Junior Warrior programme. During a Little Dragon lesson, I focus on developing the skills that children already have, through games and exercises. Because childrens optimal attention span is somewhere between 5 - 10 minutes for a single task, the lessons are based on learning no more than 3 moves. These are practiced through

different types of games that develop speed, focus, coordination, control, power and balance. It is the life skills and values that the children learn at this early age. The martial art skills come later.

Life Skills in Wing Chun Kung Fu martial art training Perseverance – the ability to last longer, not to give up and keep going mainly based on time rather than speed. At WCI Oxford and WCI Didcot we do not just run around, we also learn how to sit still and listen. Power – not about how much they can lift, more about using their own body weight efficiently, doing all kind of exercises, punching and kicking pads. Speed – fast? Not only, also slow and medium. It is a reaction to voice commands and not just running. It is

about the ability to coordinate their bodies and react to left, right, down, up, under, above, in front, behind commands. Flexibility – children at this age are naturally flexible - if they have an active lifestyle and do not sit around too much. Over the years I have noticed that some children as young as four have lost some of their natural flexibility in their glutes and cannot touch their toes when keeping their legs straight. It is mainly due to not enough motion and too much time sitting. Agility cannot be achieved without coordination and is an important skill to be developed as early as possible to help your child to learn new skills at a better level, being able to switch between movements quickly.

Wing Chun International “The important motivator is the positive “Me” development”

How does your child learn new skills? Children aged four to six learn the best through demonstration and a simple explanation – less words the better. Also, at this stage, repetition is the key and using superheroes as keywords for exercises and moves helps your child to remember movements better. There are three ways your child will learn new skills in WCI Oxford or WCI Didcot school: • Audio – short and simple explanations. • Visual – demonstrating and explaining the whole movement and broken down into details. • Kinaesthetic – “just do it” – it is the actual practice of the movements through games, pad work, exercises, partner training. It is important to rectify all mistakes the moment they are made that’s why competitions are not the best method with young children. I believe my main purpose is to help children to enjoy their training, so they can fall in love with Wing Chun Kung Fu too.

What motivates your child to do martial arts or other sports activities? There is a common thing I have noticed whether children lose their motivation or not. Those children who train regularly - at least twice a week aremuch

more motivated than those who train irregularly or just once a week. The important motivator is the positive “Me” development. We all have an ego and it is important to develop the children’s Egos in a positive manner. That can be achieved by learning new skills, developing them and eventually helping another student to learn them too. This builds confidence, self-esteem and develops leadership skills. When a child sees that their peers are way above their level, yet have been training the same amount of time, a child can feel demotivated and eventually, maybe not want to carry on training. When I get the message from a parent asking me what to do as their child doesn’t want to attend a class, I already know why – an irregular attendance and a loss of interest due to falling behind. In my position as a trainer, I have noticed that children respond well to reward motivation,

Wing Chun International learning best when they have a clear, achievable goal measured in time with the reward in sight. It is not about “If you do this, you will get a new belt” it’s about “When you do this, you will get a new belt”. There is nothing more rewarding than seeing a child earn a new belt and feeling proud of his or her achievement. It is important that the child enjoys the martial arts training, and want to attend the lessons. For parents, make that commitment and make sure your child is attending at least once a week, and remember, more will do no harm. For instructors, do not just focus on martial art skills, make sure children in your classes are developing physically and emotionally and are becoming not just fitter but psychologically stronger too.
