Albi Infanta Thayanantham Student Editor

Why fit in when I could stand out? Vanakkam Bucks! This is Albi Infanta Thayanantham, your newly appointed Student Editor. As I begin my First edition, I would like to introduce myself. I am a Master of Public Health student from April 2026 cohort, originally from Tamil Nadu, India. I have always been an enthusiastic person who enjoys exploring new opportunities and approaching things with a ‘Why not?’ attitude. My time at Bucks has bestowed me with several chances, meet people from different background and experience my post graduate life in the best possible ways. One milestone among those was becoming the Social Secretary of Indian Society at Bucks. What started as a role quickly became a journey filled with friendships, events, public appearances, laughter and loads of memories. It gave me the confidence to put myself forward and take charge even in situations that were completely new to me. And now I have another responsibility to be your student editor who is always ready, approachable and unmatchable!

The Bucks Student

For those who haven’t met me, know that I am both a bookworm and a social butterfly. I love writing poetry and enjoy public speaking. I can sing, I can dance, and I definitely know how to have fun! I enjoy exploring different sides of myself, which is probably why I find myself saying yes to opportunities that take me somewhere new. For me, university is not only about studying for a degree. It is also about discovering who you are. What Newspaper: The Bucks Student means to me? We live in a world where we scroll, swipe and move on. I would love The Bucks Student to be something that makes people stop for a moment. Something they actually want to pick up. Something they want to read. And perhaps something that inspires them to put their phone down and say: “I want to be part of this.”

Freshers’ Fair 2026 October 2026 - Edition 132

Coming Soon!

Keep an eye out for the newspaper around the campus, its packed with exciting news and events...

I had the opportunity to take Bucks Student directly to students at the Freshers Fair on Wednesday 30 September. Our stall featured the previous edition of the newspaper, along with a “Coming Soon” poster for the new edition. It became one of the most exciting parts of my first few days as Editor. Students asked questions. Some wanted to know how they could get involved. Others were interested in contributing themselves. That experience reminded me of something very important: “A newspaper only becomes meaningful when people feel connected to it.” Special thanks to my Best friend Rahul Raghav and the Graphic Designer of Bucks Students’ Union, Lorenzo Pio Di Zenobbia for helping me set up the stall. Message: It could be an event your society has organised. A competition you’ve taken part in. An achievement you’re proud of. A creative piece you’ve written.

5

Or simply an idea you think deserves attention. Bring it to us. Because there is so much talent around Bucks, and I want more of it to find its way onto these pages. Reflection: Somewhere between speaking to students and looking at that newspaper in front of me, I had a proud little moment. A girl who grew up in a part of southern Tamil Nadu, India, is now standing in the United Kingdom as the Editor of a university-wide publication. Sometimes, a new role is more than just a title; it reminds you of how far you’ve come. I am incredibly grateful to my family, friends, faculty members and well-wishers for their encouragement and support. I would also like to give a special thanks to Lorenzo who selected me for this role and has continued to support me throughout the work involved in bringing the publication together. Thank you for trusting me with this opportunity and for being there throughout the process.

Editor update - Albi Infanta Thayanantham

So, from one curious student to the rest of the Bucks community: Keep exploring. Keep creating. Keep saying yes to new opportunities. And most importantly, Why stay in one lane when there’s a whole world to explore?

President Update: August to September SU Southern Conference: The

Southern Students’ Union Conference was a great experience, bringing together 29 Students’ Unions! It was amazing to meet and connect with so many different officers, share ideas and hear about what other Students’ Unions are doing for their students. It was a brilliant opportunity to learn from each other and bring some new ideas back to Bucks!

USG / SU Induction: The USG/SU Induction was a great opportunity for the Students’ Union and University leadership to come together, get to know each other and build a strong working relationship for the year ahead. We shared our priorities, discussed how we can work together and made sure that students and their experiences remain at the heart of our work. The Bucks Student

Dean of Colleges and SU Officers Introduction: The Dean of Colleges and

Students Union Officers Introduction was a great chance for us to meet, get to know each other and talk about our priorities for the year ahead. It was also an opportunity to discuss how we can work together to support students, listen to their feedback and improve their university experience.

Digital Poverty Strategy Group: It was a great opportunity to discuss the digital challenges students may face and how we can better support them. We looked at ways to make sure students have fair access to technology, online resources and the digital support they need to succeed at university. Gym Update: The Gateway Gym is now free to use, giving students another great way to stay active, look after their wellbeing and make the most of their time at Bucks. For more information about the gym and what’s available, check out the Bucks Students’ Union website.

has finally been approved and will be going live in the next few weeks. This bursary will provide extra support for international students who may be facing unexpected financial difficulties. More information and communications will be shared as soon as possible, including how students can apply.

Turnitin Update: We have raised

concerns with the University about Turnitin and its proposed changes around the use of student work for AI training. Although these changes have currently been postponed, we want to make sure students understand what this could mean for their work and data. We will continue to represent students’ concerns and keep you updated on any developments.

International Student Bursary: Great

Uxbridge Car Park: Unfortunately, due to other priorities, the University is still working towards making free car parking spaces available at Uxbridge. While it has taken longer than originally expected, we have been assured that this is still planned. We will continue to keep students updated as soon as we have more information.

Akhil Charles Dhanarashi Vice President Achievement and Belonging akhil.charlesdhanarashi@bnu.ac.uk @buckssuvpab Hi everyone, I’m Akhil, your Vice President Achievement and Belonging at Bucks New University.

But my role isn’t just about campaigns. If you have an idea, a concern, something you think could be improved, or simply want to have a chat, please come and speak to me. I am easily approachable and accessible — think of me as someone you can talk to, not just someone with a job title.

I recently completed my Master’s in International Business Management at BNU, but I’m not going anywhere just yet! I’m continuing my journey at the university as your elected Students’ Union officer. During my time at Bucks, I got involved in student life in many different ways, including helping to establish the Indian Society and getting involved with different student activities. These experiences showed me how much university life can change when you get involved, meet new people and find a community where you feel comfortable being yourself. As your VP, one of my biggest priorities is belonging. I want every student to feel that they have a place at Bucks, regardless of where they come from, what they study or whether they are joining a society, sports club or activity for the first time.

7

Bucks VPAB

University is about more than getting a degree. It’s about the people you meet, the experiences you have, the confidence you build and the memories you create along the way. So, if you see me around campus, don’t be shy — come and say hello! You may have already seen my “You Belong Here” campaign around campus. The campaign is all about helping students connect, get involved and feel more at home at university. Whether you are an international student, a first-year student, a commuter, or someone who simply hasn’t found your people yet, I want you to know that there are opportunities for you.

VPAB update - Akhil Charles Dhanarashi

What’s Coming This Year

Safe and Smart:

A busy and exciting start to the year

One of my key priorities this year is Safe and Smart, a year-long student safety and wellbeing campaign. The campaign will focus on areas including personal safety, night-time safety, healthy relationships and consent, cyber security and scams, housing safety, placement safety and safeguarding. The aim is to give students practical information, raise awareness of the support available and help everyone feel more confident about staying safe and knowing where to turn when support is needed.

Freshers’ has been such an exciting start to the academic year! It has been amazing to meet so many new and returning students, hear about your experiences and get to know the different communities across Bucks. From Freshers events and activities to conversations with students around campus, it has been a great opportunity to introduce myself and learn more about what matters to you. As your Vice President Education and Welfare, my role is to represent your voice and make sure students’ academic experience, wellbeing and safety remain at the heart of the Students’ Union’s work.

Bucks VPEW

Alongside this, I’ll be focusing on the academic experience, including teaching, assessment, feedback and academic support. I’ll also be working with student representatives to understand the issues students are experiencing across different courses and ensure these are raised with the relevant teams. There is lots more planned for the year, including campaigns, events, awareness activities and opportunities for students to get involved. Most importantly, I want students to know that your voice matters. If there is something you think could be improved, a concern you want raised or an idea you would like to see at Bucks, please come and speak to me!

Over the coming year, I’ll be working closely with students, student representatives and university teams to listen to your feedback, identify areas that could be improved and make sure your views are represented in key university discussions.

Bucks Up It’s Onam One of my highlights so far was having the opportunity to organize Bucks Up It’s Onam. Around 120 students came together for an amazing evening filled with FREE Sadhya, dancing, music, games and a DJ night. It was a packed evening, but what made it especially memorable for me was seeing how happy and connected everyone felt.

Let’s come together to celebrate the vibrant festival of Onam with joy, laughter, and togetherness. Come with your smiles, celebrate with your hearts, and make this Onam truly special!

Seeing students surrounded by their community, celebrating their culture and being part of something so beautiful was truly special. A huge thanks to everyone who helped make the event a blast!

Green Ambassador Bin it Right: New Vape Bins are Here Most of us have done it: finished a vape and either dropped it in the nearest bin or handed it back to the corner shop, where it often just ends up in the regular bin anyway. This term, there’s finally a better option. We now have dedicated vape disposal bins on campus.

I’d love your help. If you want to get involved, share your own experience, or just come and chat, find us on Instagram under Greenambassadorbucks. Small conversations can change what feels normal on campus, and I’d like Bucks to be a place where choosing to cut down or quit feels supported.

Every vape has a lithium-ion battery inside. Thrown in the general rubbish, it can get crushed by bin lorries and sorting machinery, and a punctured battery can ignite in seconds. It’s happening far more than you’d think. The Environmental Services Association, which represents UK waste companies, reported 1,518 fires across its members’ sites in the year to March 2026, and 541 were directly linked to lithium-ion batteries. The industry puts the yearly cost at around £1 billion, and vapes are named among the biggest culprits because they’re cheap, plentiful and quickly thrown away. The ban on selling disposable vapes came in during June 2025, but it hasn’t ended the problem. Devices already out there still end up in the wrong bins, and reusable vapes and pods have batteries too. Behind every one of these fires are real people. Bin lorry crews, recycling workers and the public are put at risk when vapes go in the general waste. If you’d like to cut down or quit, Healthy Bucks are also coming in to support any students who are interested in quitting smoking.

Small Actions, Big impact: The

difference volunteering can make When you think about volunteering it is very easy to assume that you need to put in a huge commitment in order to make a difference. However, that is not the case, making a difference could mean just taking a few minutes or a couple hours out of your day to get involved. At Bucks Students’ Union, volunteering takes many different forms from internal to community volunteering. Internal volunteering is all about giving back to the Bucks community such as something as simple as becoming a committee member of a society. Whereas Community volunteering is all about supporting local charities and organisations such as volunteering at a food bank or litter picking.

Impact a small act can have: As mentioned, you don’t need to make a huge commitment to volunteering to make a difference. Spending a few minutes to a couple hours volunteering your making a larger impact on the community or a charity than you think. For charities have an extra person to volunteer can make a huge difference in how their service is run. For example, more food could be packed to be donated, a park could be cleaner, one more person could receive support.

Why volunteer? Volunteering has many different benefits for not only your experience as a student but also for when you go into work after university. Taking part in volunteering means that you can make new connections with people you wouldn’t normally interact with outside of your course. It also helps you to build on transferable skills such as communication, teamwork which will help you when you go into a new job. By volunteering your also able to experience an element of personal growth in your confidence and selfawareness which allows you to step outside of your comfort zone in a supportive environment.

This year our Charity is Thames Valley Air Ambulance, saving lives everyday. It costs £3,950 for each mission. We have an unbelievably packed rag week this year, from the 19th of October until the 25th, we have a range of clubs and societies getting involved. Stretching from Netball, Rugby and Dance to Musical Theatre and African Society.

We also have the wonderful opportunity to have 5 students take part in the London Marathon on behalf of Thames Valley Air Ambulance, so it would be great to show them all the support! As I am back for my third and final year it’s going to be a blast and can’t wait for everyone to be able to take part and raise money for an amazing charity!!

In the cold October month we have drench a dancer, and the infamous netball for RAG happening on Tuesday. We have a sweet stall during the day on Wednesday to fuel all the sports club going to their matches and the wonderful lucky dip box of get what you get!

Give It a Go Fortnight: Try something new with Bucks Students Union Starting university is all about new experiences, new people and discovering things you never knew you enjoyed. That’s exactly what Give It a Go Fortnight is all about. Taking place with Bucks Students’ Union, Give It a Go Fortnight gives students the chance to try out a huge range of activities, sports, societies and volunteering opportunities – with no pressure to commit to anything straight away. Whether you’re looking to meet new people, get active, learn a new skill or simply try something completely different, there’s something for everyone. Never tried it before? Give it a go! You might have always wanted to try a new sport, get involved in a society or take part in a creative activity, but never quite got around to it. Give It a Go Fortnight is the perfect excuse. You could try something you’ve never done before, join an activity with friends or even turn up on your own. You don’t need to be an expert, and you certainly don’t need to know anyone beforehand. These activities are designed to give you the chance to have a go and see what you think. Make friends along the way One of the best things about getting involved is meeting people outside your course. Heading along to an activity can be an easy way to start a conversation, especially if you’re new to university or still finding your feet. You might arrive knowing nobody and leave with a new 15

group of friends – or at least a funny story to tell! University isn’t just about lectures and assignments. It’s also a chance to discover new interests and make the most of your time at university. Give It a Go Fortnight is your opportunity to explore what’s on offer without having to make a big commitment. Try a society, have a go at a sport, get creative, volunteer, learn something new or simply take part in something that looks fun. You never know – the activity you try for 30 minutes could become your new favourite hobby. The best part? You don’t have to be good at it. Give It a Go Fortnight is about trying, not perfecting. You might discover a new passion, meet someone you wouldn’t otherwise have met, build your confidence or simply have a brilliant time. So, check out what’s happening during Give It a Go Fortnight with Bucks Students’ Union, pick something that catches your eye and give it a go! You’ve got nothing to lose – and you might just find your new favourite thing. Please visit the next page to see the huge range of activities, sports, societies and volunteering opportunities

BUCKS UP IT'S ONAM “Rooted in tradition, united in celebration” 22ND SEPTEMBER • WINTER GARDEN • BUCKS STUDENTSʼ UNION

Greetings, everyone! Onashamsakal! Wishing every student a joyful and colourful Onam, wherever home may be. Thousands of miles from home, yet Onam felt close. Bucks Students’ Union brought the warmth of Kerala to campus on 22nd September, as the Winter Garden hosted “Bucks Up, It’s Onam.” Around 120 students gathered to celebrate the harvest festival, many dressed in traditional sarees and mundus. For those studying far from home, the event offered a welcome sense of community and cultural connection.

A Feast to Remember

In a first for the university, a traditional Onam Sadhya was served free to all students. The feast was catered by Manoj of Coconut Lagoon and drew praise for its authentic flavours. A graceful dance performance by nursing students received an enthusiastic response from the audience.

Fun, Games & a Dance Night

The celebrations continued with an energetic tug of war, musical chairs and icebreaker activities that helped students meet new people. The evening ended with a dance night led by DJ Alldiss.

With Heartfelt Thanks

A huge thank you to everyone who attended and to the student volunteers who helped make the day a success. Special thanks to Swetha Suresh Krishna for helping organise the event, and to Alice Aksham for the photos and videos. The event was organised by Bucks Students’ Union, with thanks to Feba (VPSACE). BNU Boxing BNU Boxing Welcomes Fresh Faces and Bigger Goals for the New Season

For those looking to train, the routine is well-established:

The Bucks New University (BNU) Boxing Society has officially kicked off its 2026– 27 campaign, offering both seasoned fighters and total beginners a clear path into the ring. Fully funded under the Bucks Students’ Union “Big Deal” initiative, the club remains completely free to join for all registered students.

5:15 pm: Members gather outside the High Wycombe campus Students’ Union and The Venue doors to complete registration and safety checks.

Running the society through this year’s ambitious calendar is a dedicated, newly appointed committee. Leading the charge is society Chair Ellie Eames alongside Vice Chair Scott Bromley, who are focusing heavily on expanding the society’s reach. Managing the club’s financial strategy is Treasurer Miracle Ariyo, while Social Secretary Shenai Brown is tasked with driving the club’s community culture and organizing events outside the gym. Weekly Training and Progression: The club continues its strong partnership with the local community, holding its weekly training sessions every Thursday from 6:00pm to 7:00pm at the fully equipped High Wycombe Warriors Boxing Club on Abercrombie Avenue.

5:30 pm: The squad travels together down to the Warriors gym. 6:00 pm – 7:00 pm: Intense session focusing on technical skills, highintensity cardio, and core conditioning under professional coaching. The society maintains a strict “safety first” culture. While anyone can participate in the fitness and technical segments, members looking to progress into live sparring must first clear a free university-provided concussion test. Looking Ahead to Fight Night: While many join purely for fitness or self-defence, the overarching target for the club’s competitive tier remains the annual Fight Night. Held every spring at the university’s on-campus arena,

The Venue, this massive white-collar amateur boxing showcase stands as one of BNU’s biggest student events. The night brings together hundreds of spectators, live sets, and performances from the BNU Cheer and Dance squads at our last event. Student fighters from vastly different academic departments—ranging from Game Design and Social Work to Performing Arts— will step into the ring to represent their peers and raise hundreds of pounds for good causes. Looking Ahead to Fight Night: Whether you are looking to step into the ring competitively or just find a highenergy way to hit your fitness goals, the committee encourages everyone to take the leap. Students can officially sign up, track upcoming sessions, or get in touch with Scott, Miracle, or Shenai by visiting the official Bucks Students’ Union Boxing Portal.

Living life on the cutting edge

Have you ever wanted to learn sword fighting? Have you ever wanted to learn sword fighting? medieval fighting styles? Do you act and need to learn stage fighting? The Bucks Blades is the society for you, with a great and friendly community and an amazing roster of teachers, this is the best way for you to learn sword fighting. We hold tournaments and weekly sessions where you can learn and spar with other members of the society, during these sessions you’ll learn the fundamentals of the craft and learn how to expand these fundamentals into a smooth and seamless practice. And if one style isn’t for you, we teach multiple styles such as one-handed, hand and a half, bucklers, and more. Once you are done with all the sword fighting you can enjoy a nice time at spoons with your fellow society members to get to know them and indulge in a meal if you so wish. And if you are ever worried about not having any skill in sword fighting previously don’t worry too much as everyone starts somewhere and this is the perfect place to start and as you get further, you’ll wonder why you didn’t want to join sooner.

The Bucks Student

After all, as the saying goes practice makes perfect and this is the perfect place to practice. But don’t worry as we don’t just do sword fighting but plan to investigate the history of the craft we love, such as different swords throughout history and the practicality of this practice throughout history. In short, Blades HEMA is an excellent way of having fun, making new friends, and doing something you may never have had the chance to do before! All wrapped up neatly and tidily with swords. If you’re unsure about joining, don’t be, come for a session or two. You never know, you might not leave!

By the time this newspaper is published, we will have held our first session, but don’t worry, you have two more weeks to join and learn the basics we use for the rest of the year.

An Eventful Freshers Week with the

Christian Union Freshers’ 2026 has been an absolute blast! The Christian Union has had a wonderful time being able to get to know freshers starting at Bucks! So many conversations have been shared, friendships have been formed and many questions about faith and Christianity continuing to rise amongst people; with some asking themselves about the big questions about life and how to go about it. Starting off with our Freshers Fair, our team was able to meet with students who were Christian, exploring Christianity, of a different faith or none to communicate more about their stance on their faith. Many were keen to meet like-minded people on the day whereas others were open to talk about their struggles with belief and their understanding of Christianity. We took this further with a Student Meal on the 2nd October to continue sparking conversations about faith and get to know each other as a group. For the first time, we were able to showcase our brand new social tops for our group which are now available to grab!

27

For the month of October; we will be exploring local churches around High Wycombe as a CU each Sunday to help new students and those who are new to Christianity to find a Church Home for them and we’ve kick-started our first church searches at Union Baptist Church on the 4th and Kings Church on the 11th. On the day, we were able to meet with the leaders by having lunch, learn more about the Church and how students can stay connected with their community. We will also be exploring Vibe Church on the 18th and St Andrews Church on the 25th continuing to fulfil our mission! (Get in contact if you’re interested in being involved, it’s not too late!!) For the CU this is only the beginning of the amazing plans that we have for the year and are so excited to see what the Lord has in store! If you’re interested to hear more about what we’re up to check us out on our Instagram @bnucusociety or email us at bnucu1@outlook.com!

BNU Figure Skating

Brand New Society!

With training on Sunday afternoons, this free activity (thanks to the big deal!) is a perfect end to a busy week. It is a time to clear your mind and reset. This activity is not restricted at all. Figure skating society welcomes members of any level, from no experience on the ice all the way to proficient skaters. The chair of the society has over a few years of experience and knows which skills each member should be focusing on to enhance their skills on ice. A unique feature of Figure Skating Society is the connection they have with professional coaches who they can connect members to. Meaning it is entirely possible to earn certificates in this sport. The society’s motto is ‘esse quam videri’, which is a Latin phrase that means “to be rather than to seem” from Cicero’s essay on friendship. Figure skating has chosen this as their motto to emphasise authenticity. In this society you will create authentic friendships and hold true skills in a sport that recognised as difficult.

New Season, New Team:

BNU Basketball A new academic year brings a new chapter for Bucks New University Basketball, with both the Men’s and Women’s teams preparing for an exciting season ahead.

Training sessions will provide an opportunity for players to develop their skills, improve fitness and, most importantly, build the teamwork needed when game day arrives.

After a period of growth, BNU Basketball is entering the new season with fresh faces, renewed ambition, and a clear goal: to build teams that are competitive, welcoming, and proud to represent the university.

As the season gets underway, there is a sense of excitement around what this new generation of BNU Basketball can achieve. New players, new challenges and a new opportunity to represent Bucks New University.

For the Women’s team, this season marks another important step forward as the squad continues to develop. With returning players joined by new recruits, the team is looking to build strong chemistry both on and off the court. The focus is not only on results, but on creating a positive environment where players of different experience levels can develop their game and enjoy competing together.

New season. New teams. New ambitions. The journey starts now.

The Men’s team are also looking forward to a fresh start. With new players coming into the squad, the team is working towards building its identity and establishing itself as a competitive force within university basketball. While both teams have their eyes on success, BNU Basketball is about more than just competition. The club aims to bring students together through sport, whether they are experienced players looking for a competitive challenge or students simply looking for a place to play, meet new people and become part of a team.

All equipment is provided, so there’s nothing you need to bring other than yourself. Best of all, joining BNU Cricket is completely free.

We’re teammates on the pitch, but off it we’re a group of friends who support each other, have a laugh and make university life that little bit better. Getting involved couldn’t be easier. Simply head over to the Bucks Students’ Union website, find BNU Cricket and get your cricket membership. It’s absolutely free — yes, it really is that easy! So, whether you want to play competitive university cricket, improve your game, meet new people or simply try something new, come and join us. We’d love to welcome you to the BNU Cricket family.

“BNU Cricket is about more than just playing the game, it’s about the people, the friendships and representing the university. We’re building a club that everyone can feel valued to be part of.”

Our competitive season begins in April, when we represent BNU in the BUCS Open South Eastern Tier 4. Playing for the university is a brilliant opportunity to test yourself competitively, be part of a team and represent BNU with pride. But BNU Cricket is about much more than what happens during matches. We want the club to be somewhere people can meet, make friends and feel part of a community. Our Wednesday socials give everyone a chance to get together away from training and cricket. For us, the club has always been about bringing people together.

The impact of The Big Deal from an alumni For me when I was a student here, sport became much more than something to do between lectures. It became the starting point for friendships, leadership opportunities and a much wider involvement in university life. After joining the netball club at Bucks, I quickly became part of a team and began attending regular training and social events. What started as a way to stay active and meet new people, it soon became one of the highlights of my university experience. Through the Students’ Union, I also discovered that there were opportunities to take on more responsibility, where I became more involved in the club, joined the women’s hockey team, supported other students by becoming a fresher helper and eventually took on multiple leadership roles within the netball club. In the second year I was finance manager and in my third year I was the second team captain. Alongside the sporting commitments, I attended a variety of Students’ Union activities, from bowling and ice skating to theatre trips, creative activities and social events. I also took part in skills training, attending STRIVE and sessions such as Leading a Team, Dynamic Communication and Presentation Skills. These sessions

The Bucks Student

helped to develop skills that complemented my sporting experience and gave me greater confidence when working with other people. I started to volunteer and raise money for various RAG charities through my 3 years. In my third year, alongside other netballers, I raised money and awareness for the Wycombe Homeless connection by doing the Big Sleep Out. This allowed me to give back to the local community and through this I won the fundraiser of the year award. Being involved in sport also introduced me to students I would never have met through my course alone. The friendships that developed became an important part of my university experience. By the time graduation came around, I had developed as much outside the classroom as I had inside it. I gained experience of teamwork, leadership, communication and organisation, alongside memories of competitions, socials and university activities. The Big Deal meant that getting involved in sport and trying new activities didn’t have to come with an additional financial burden. It gave me the chance to make the most of university — both on and off the court.

Have Your Say! Say it Loud! Want to help shape your university experience? There are two key positions that you could apply for: Student Reps and Union Council Chair. These roles exist to make sure that you have a say in your university experience. Student reps are the core of representation here at Bucks. As a rep, your role would be to collect feedback from your peers and work with university staff and the Students’ Union to overcome any challenges students on your course are facing, and push for positive change. Reps are there to make sure that the student experience remains at the centre of everything Bucks does.

Union Council is the highest decisionmaking body within Bucks Students’ Union – think of it like our miniParliament! The Council meets regularly throughout the year to discuss the issues that are important to students, hold our elected officers to account, and shape what the Union does. Any BNU student can attend, ask questions, bring ideas, and vote on policy. The Union Council Chair leads these discussions, helping to keep them fair and balanced by making sure every student has equal opportunity to speak if they wish to. In the role, you would help to steer the Council and the Union towards the best outcomes for all of our students.

Why nominate yourself? By being in these roles, you’d gain a myriad of transferable skills such as, leadership, teamwork, creativity, and organisation, all of which will help you stand out to potential employers. We are also one of the only SU’s in the country that pays our student reps, so you could earn yourself a reward of up to £100 by completing all of your responsibilities as a rep. So why not give it a go! Nominations for both roles are open right now, and close on Friday 16 October at 12pm. To find out more about the roles or how to nominate yourself, just email surepresentation@bnu.ac.uk – we’d love to hear from you!
