THE BUCKS AWARD

Every time you participate in an activity with the Students’ Union, be it volunteering, a skills session or securing a committee role, we collate these records to showcase your involvement through the Bucks Award. The Bucks Award is divided into sections with the idea that by the time you leave university you have something in every section – a completely achievable goal due to all the free opportunities you have access to thanks to the BIG Deal.

The Bucks Award will be used as an ongoing reflective tool to identify any areas you feel we can help you develop. Maybe you have accrued many volunteering hours but would like to secure a leadership role or maybe you’ve attended lots of skills sessions and would like to use those skills working for us next year. It is also a way of showing prospective employers the many activities you have been involved in, demonstrating the transferable skills and experiences you’ve picked up during your time studying. We will also advise you on how you can effectively talk about your skills and experiences and relate them to workplace scenarios.

LEADERSHIP ACADEMY

As one of the leading students’ unions in the country, Bucks Students’ Union has employed many graduates on its management and wider staff team. One of our key strategic priorities for the coming years is ‘Employability and Life After University’. To deliver this, we have created the Leadership Academy to recognise the value of developing future leaders early on.

The Leadership Academy is available to all students and entirely bespoke to the individual. We will create a development programme based on your goals for the year and beyond. Whether you are in your first or third year we can create a programme for you. We will offer you training courses specific to your needs, funding for recognised, certified qualifications and networking opportunities to give you the best possible chance for success - all free of charge courtesy of The BIG Deal.

To accommodate multiple intakes of students, we recruit the Leadership Academy cohort every October and March for the coming academic year and, through one-to-one sessions, mentoring and guidance, ensure that when you leave university with your degree, you are completely work-ready.

Supporting our students

STUDENT LOANS

MAINTENANCE LOANS

You may be eligible for financial support from the government to help with the cost of living during your studies. Contact our Student Hub at students@bnu.ac.uk for further guidance.

TUITION FEE LOANS

The most common way to fund your degree is with a student loan that covers all your tuition fees - and you won’t be asked to pay back a penny until you’ve graduated and earning over the government threshold. Find out more at gov.uk/student-finance

You can apply for both of these loans from February before you start university and the earlier the better to ensure that you are paid on time in September. You don’t need to have made your final choice of university to apply – just put your first choice and you can edit your application at any point up to enrolment.

There may be additional financial help and benefits that you are able to claim depending on your personal circumstances. gov.uk/student-finance is the best place to start.

BNU BURSARIES AND FINANCIAL SUPPORT

At BNU we are proud to be a friendly and inclusive university, offering an impressive package of bursaries, financial support and more to make sure that all our students can reach their potential.

You won’t need to pay anything back from our bursaries or financial support options. Visit bnu.ac.uk/ugbursaries for more information and eligibility criteria.

MENTAL HEALTH SUPPORT AND COUNSELLING

Making the journey through higher education can be hard sometimes. So, if you ever feel like you need a bit of extra support, we can offer professional therapy and help away from your day-to-day environment. It’s all confidential, and completely free too.

DISABILITY AND WELFARE SUPPORT

We are here to help ensure that you get the most from your experience in an inclusive learning environment.

We are happy to discuss individual needs at any stage of your application or during your studies. The earlier you declare your disability in your application, the more we can help to put the support you may need in place.

Our team can assist with applications for Disabled Students’ Allowances (DSAs) and can provide screenings for specific learning difficulties, mental health problems and autism as well as adjustment and inclusion plans, including reasonable adjustment recommendations for teaching and exams.

Part-time work

Many of our students work part-time alongside their studies. We have a thriving job shop based in the Bucks Students’ Union and there are plentiful opportunities around all three campuses for part-time roles.

STUDENT AMBASSADORS

We offer work in the form of a Student Ambassador role, working closely with the Marketing and Student Recruitment Department. The scheme allows you to work a paid position that fits around your studies and enables you to grow your CV.

From supporting at Open Days, leading campus tours, helping at UCAS fairs, to creating fun and engaging content for our website and social platforms, we will give you full training and you’ll gain valuable skills to impress future employers.

Supporting your learning development

Our Student Learning and Achievement team support students who are keen to develop their academic skills and improve their grades, whatever their course, year or stage of attainment.

Higher Technical Qualifications

Higher Technical Qualifications (HTQs) are Level 4 or Level 5 qualifications, similar to Higher National Diplomas (HNDs) and Foundation Degrees.

HTQs sit between Level 3 qualifications such as T-Levels and A-levels and traditional taught degrees. HTQs are vocationally orientated, profession focused and can lead to high skilled, high paid jobs in a broad range of sectors. All HTQs have been mapped and approved against occupational standards that have been designed by industry and employers.

Who are HTQs for?

HTQs are suitable for:

• school leavers (18+): who are looking for an alternative to degrees or apprenticeships

• employees: of organisations wanting to upskill

• mature learners: looking for the skills to change career.

What funding is available for HTQs?

All our HTQs are eligible for full student finance. This means that full-time and parttime students starting a HTQ year will be able to apply for both tuition fee and maintenance loans.

Why should you consider a HTQ?

• Fast-track to success: HTQs are a direct route to career success; they focus on practical skills, ensuring you are wellprepared for the workforce.

• Hands-on learning: HTQs emphasize real-world applications, enabling you to engage in practical projects and gain invaluable experience.

• Industry recognition: employers really value HTQs as they are developed in consultation with industry experts, ensuring relevance and alignment with industry needs.

• Flexibility: HTQs come in various levels, from certificates to diplomas, modular learning and continuous professional development (CPD), catering to learners at different stages of their educational journey.

• Career advancement: completing an HTQ can open doors to new job prospects and potentially higher earning potential.

• Build your own degree: all of the modules from these degrees can be studied as short courses.

We can arrange trips to places like prisons, charities working with vulnerable people, sports grounds, events and other occupational settings to give you insights into different career paths. You’ll see your chosen subject in action and how your degree can be used in the real world. What’s more, you could also gain experience volunteering in areas like mental health, forensic-related agencies and educational settings. This all helps to enhance your skills, as well as enable you to build up valuable contacts, further preparing you for life after graduation.

CRIMINOLOGY HEALTH AND SOCIAL SCIENCE

Mental health, crime and society, ageing, gender, diversity, inequality - only by understanding people’s experiences of these areas can we really start solving the big issues facing society. With BNU, you can explore the theories, policies, processes and relationships that influence attitudes, beliefs and behaviour in society.

After graduation, you could look into jobs within and around the criminal justice system, such as the courts, prisons, police service or the probation service and other related career pathways.

We’ll also prepare you to work in voluntary and third sector organisations such as drug and alcohol services as well as intelligence and crime analysis, youth offending and the legal profession. Whatever your career goal, we’ll help you to achieve it.

Society is a complicated machine with lots of independent cogs that all affect each other. It’s a fascinating and wide-reaching subject to study.

Health and social science focuses on the changing world and the social and cultural influences on health, wellbeing and society. You’ll learn how to deconstruct issues and challenges in society related to diversity, health and gender. It also examines the ways in which globalisation is affecting the community and understandings of health, wellbeing and ageing.

There is a strong focus on employability throughout this programme and you will have the opportunity to volunteer for an organisation relevant to this degree, which will help enhance your CV for future graduate level employment.

This subject is perfect if you want to pursue a career in the public sector, either working in policy or politics. This degree will also help you to attain key transferable academic skills which are needed to pursue a career in the wellbeing, health, social and voluntary sectors.
