The Paragon Gallery invites visitors into a world of colour, rhythm and atmosphere with a vibrant new exhibition dedicated to contemporary landscape. Bringing together a distinguished group of painters and printmakers, the show explores how artists continue to reinterpret the natural world through bold palettes, expressive mark-making and original print techniques. With a focus on original works, spanning oil and acrylic painting, alongside etchings and screenprints, the exhibition highlights the enduring appeal of the landscape as a subject that is both timeless and constantly evolving.
At the heart of the exhibition are works by Donald Hamilton Fraser and Barbara Rae, two leading figures whose approaches to colour and abstraction have shaped contemporary interpretations of place. Their works resonate with energy and structure, where landscapes are distilled into luminous fields of colour and gestural forms, capturing not just topography but the emotional essence of a location.
Alongside them, Louise Davies presents atmospheric paintings that draw on the shifting moods of the British landscape. Her use of oils and colour screenprinting techniques creates layered surfaces that echo the fleeting qualities of light and weather, inviting viewers into quiet, contemplative spaces.
In contrast, Chitra Merchant offers a vivid and richly patterned vision of nature. Her work, often rooted in memory and cultural landscape, combines acrylic painting with hand-pulled screenprints, producing compositions that feel both intricate and expansive. Inspired by natural environments, her practice captures a sense of movement and vitality, balancing vibrancy with moments of calm.
Completing the line-up is Bruce McLean, whose distinctive visual language brings an expressive and often playful dimension to landscape. Known for pushing the boundaries between sculpting, painting and printmaking, McLean’s works bridge spontaneity and control, offering bold, gestural interpretations that challenge traditional expectations of the genre.
What unites these artists is a shared commitment to originality. Dame Barbara Rae RA
A Scottish painter and printmaker, Rae is celebrated for her expressive use of colour and semi-abstract landscapes inspired by travel, memory, and place. Working across painting, printmaking and mixed media, her work often draws from the rugged environments of Scotland, Ireland, Spain and the Arctic, transforming observed landscapes into richly layered compositions that balance structure with spontaneity. A former President of the Royal Scottish Academy, Rae was elected a Royal Academician in London and was awarded a Damehood in recognition of her contribution to the visual arts. Her work is held in major public and private collections internationally, including the Tate and the Victoria and Albert Museum.

Bruce McLean
A Scottish artist known for his pioneering role in conceptual and performance art. Emerging in the 1960s, McLean challenged traditional ideas of sculpture and artistic seriousness through humour, satire and live performance, often using his own body as both subject and medium. His work spans painting, photography, film, sculpture and performance, combining sharp wit with an enduring critique of institutional and artistic conventions. Despite the playful nature of much of his practice, McLean’s work is underpinned by rigorous observation and a deep understanding of art history. Over several decades he has remained an influential figure in British contemporary art, exhibiting internationally and helping to expand the boundaries of what art could be.

Chitra Merchant

Donald Hamilton Fraser

Louise Davies RE
Louise Davies is a London-based British painter and printmaker known for her vibrant landscapes and expressive use of colour and line. Trained at Central Saint Martins and Camberwell College of Arts, she became a member of the Royal Society of PainterPrintmakers in 2012 and a Fellow in 2014. Working across oil painting, etching and collagraph, Davies creates atmospheric landscapes and cityscapes inspired by the West Country and London, layering translucent colour and fluid line to evoke light, movement and mood. Her work is held in public and private collections including the Victoria and Albert Museum Print Collection and has been exhibited at Bankside Gallery.
