A Message from the Parks and Recreation Director Dear Brownsville Community, It is an honor to serve a community as vibrant, diverse, and full of possibility as Brownsville. At the City of Brownsville Parks & Recreation Department, our work goes beyond maintaining parks and facilities. We create spaces, programs, and experiences that bring people together, improve quality of life, and strengthen the community we proudly call home. Our department remains focused on continuous improvements, enhancing our spaces, strengthening our programs, and finding better ways to serve you. This progress is made possible through the dedication of our Parks & Recreation teammates, community partners, and residents. At the heart of our mission is inclusion. Our parks, facilities, programs, and events belong to everyone. From youth sports and aquatics to senior activities, recreation centers, trails, and neighborhood parks, we strive to provide welcoming, safe, and meaningful opportunities for all. CANVAS AND BRIDGING CREATIV
Public parks and cultural spaces serve as the living canvas of a community. Hosted at the Mitte Arts & Cultural Center, this year’s Arts & Literacy Festival brought together local families, storytellers, and visual artists for a day dedicated to creative discovery and shared heritage. Beyond celebrating literature, the event invited residents of all ages to engage directly with the creative process. From live mural painting and interactive story sessions to hands-on activities, the festival highlighted how art and literacy intersect to build vibrant, inclusive neighborhoods. A major highlight of the day was the Brownsville Story Art Contest, which showcased extraordinary original works from local youth creators across four age divisions.

At PARD, we proudly celebrate the young visionaries of the Brownsville Story Art Contest, whose original artwork captured the vibrant spirit of our community. Special recognition goes to Xyra Beatrisse Ayson, whose winning entry graces the cover of this season’s Playbook, alongside featured contest participants Sophia Solorzano, Luna Solorzano, and Camila Solorzano. In a generous gesture of community spirit, each of these talented young artists has donated their original creations to the City of Brownsville Parks & Recreation Department. Following their formal recognition by Department Director Sean De Palma, their framed pieces will be proudly displayed across our local recreation centers for residents and visitors to enjoy for years to come!

DEAN PORTER PARK: Established in 1927, this historic 25-acre park transformed a former early 20th-century landf ill along the Town Resaca into one of the city's premier hubs. Our spacious main ballroom features 13,530 square feet of flexible space, ideal for large gatherings. For more intimate events, the ballroom can be divided into five smaller rooms accommodating 65 to 120 people each. Three additional conference rooms offer further options for your event needs.
