CLAY

WHEEL THROWING

Wednesdays, July 10-August 14, 6-8:30 pm

Instructor: Sheilagh Smith

No experience necessary

This class is an introduction to clay, pottery, and the ceramics studio. Students work primarily on the potter’s wheel, learning basic throwing and forming techniques, while creating functional pieces such as mugs, cups, and bowls. Students are guided through the various finishing techniques using the studio’s house slips and glazes. Class price includes your first bag of clay and open studio access during the weeks of your class. All glazes and firings are also included.

HANDBUILDING

Thursdays, July 25-August 15, 6-8:30 pm

This class is an introduction to clay, hand-built pottery, and the ceramics studio. Students learn basic hand building techniques over the duration of the four-week class to create functional pieces, such as cups and mugs. Each week focuses on a di erent project to learn a new technique. Students also learn how to decorate and customize pieces with texture and glaze. Class price includes your first ten pounds of clay and open studio access during the weeks of your class. All glazes and firings are also included.

PRINT

SCREEN PRINTING

This introduction to screen printing shows students how to design and print t-shirts, posters, fine art, and more. Discover a variety of techniques for transferring and printing images using hand-drawn, photographic, or borrowed imagery. Students learn how to apply photo emulsion, use an exposure unit, and print on a variety of surfaces. Class price includes the use of studio equipment, emulsion, transparencies, and ink as well as open studio access during the weeks of the class. Students can bring their own screens or rent one through the studio.

LINOCUT

In this three-week class, students create small designs with the relief technique of linoleum block printing. We will print these one-color blocks by hand or with the printing press, and then add color by experimenting with watercolor paints or solid background colors. This class is a fun opportunity to make cards and other art to share, since we can print multiples once you make your block. Please bring ideas or sketches (8 x 10in or smaller) to the first class so we can get started right away! All other materials provided.

Learn the basics of creating metal jewelry. Techniques covered include sawing, piercing, filing, annealing, soldering, texturing, cold connections, ring sizing, and more. Students will create wearable art while exploring di erent styles and design processes. The class includes some copper and brass for class projects as well as the use of all basic tools and open studio access during the weeks of your class.

Explore the traditional, analog black and white darkroom. Students learn how to properly expose black and white film, process film into negatives, and make silver gelatin prints. All 35mm film, up to 25 sheets of photo paper, and darkroom supplies are included, as well as access to the darkroom open studio during the weeks of class. Students can bring their own manual 35mm or medium-format film camera, or inquire with kwilliams@burlingtoncityarts.org about borrowing one from the studio (please note, cameras are limited).

Learn the basics of making a great photograph from initial exposure to editing and printing in this comprehensive class. Starting with an overview of camera controls and functions, students will learn about aperture, shutter speed, ISO ratings, shooting in RAW, lens choices, metering techniques and more. Organizing and editing files in Adobe Lightroom will also be covered and students will leave with a selection of high-quality prints made on our archival Epson printer. This class will also include assignments and supportive critique sessions to discuss the composition, content and concepts explored in your photographs. Students should bring a DSLR or digital Mirrorless Rangefinder camera and a Mac-compatible portable hard drive or flash drive. Open studio use is also included during the weeks of this class.

BOTANICAL PHOTO PRINTING WORKSHOP

In this one-day workshop, students create one-of-a-kind photo prints using solar power and plants as inspiration, tools, and materials. Together, students explore natural areas around Burlington, collecting flowers and weeds to use for making Lumen prints with the power of the sun. We will also explore the photo process of Cyanotype to make beautiful designs on fabric for wall hangings. All basic materials are provided. Students should bring a bag lunch, bottle of water and dress for walking outside. Rain date is August 18.
