FALL CLASSES ON SALE WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 20 12 PM

SCHOLARSHIPS AVAILABLE

The demand for scholarship funds has greatly increased and BCA is committed to spreading available funds among as many applicants as possible. Please note that we may not be able to award multiple scholarships to an individual throughout the year. When able, we encourage applicants to contribute to their class fees, so more people can benefit from BCA scholarships.

STUDIO MEMBERSHIP

BCA Studios at 405 Pine Street offers seasonal studio membership for adults (18+) with basic experience who would like to work independently in our Drawing/Painting, Print, Clay, Jewelry, Darkroom, or Digital Lab. Each studio offers approximately 30 hours of open studio time per week. Trained studio assistants are on-hand during all open studio hours for guidance and support. Basic supplies and materials, storage, and cleaning supplies are included. Please contact the studio manager for more information and to schedule an orientation. The JUDY KELLY DRAWING/PAINTING STUDIO features standing easels, adjustable lighting, utility sink, homasote critique wall, and drying racks. Studio members are allowed the use of community tools and shared storage space. The studio is equipped for solvent-free, waterbased painting and drawing materials.

The PRINTMAKING STUDIO offers a 30 x 48" Takach etching press, a 38 x 32" vacuum-sealed exposure unit, washout booth, utility sink, large work tables, and cleaning materials. Our Print Studio is equipped for silkscreen, relief printmaking, and monotype. Studio members are allowed the use of community tools and shared storage space.

The TAMARA EDDY CLAY STUDIO is a fully equipped, educationally-focused ceramics studio with 12 pottery wheels, three kilns, a slab roller, extruder, and a wide variety of hand tools for wheel throwing, hand building, and sculpting. Studio members get personal shelf space to store their clay and work in progress. The studio provides slips, underglazes, and over 100 glaze combinations. All clay must be purchased through BCA. Prerequisite: Students need to have taken a BCA Clay class or have been a BCA Clay Studio member.

The DARKROOM PHOTOGRAPHY LAB offers a traditional black and white darkroom for film and print processing, using low-toxicity Eco-Pro chemicals. There is space provided for experimenting with alternative historic processes, mat cutting, and zine making.

The DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY LAB offers color-calibrated iMac workstations with Adobe Creative Cloud software, Epson V700/V800 film scanners, and three large format Epson printers with archival printing capability up to 44". Additional per-sheet fees apply for digital paper and ink.

The LAURIE PETERS JEWELRY STUDIO provides many tools and equipment, including a polishing wheel, rolling mill, drill press, flex shafts, soldering stations, a PMC kiln, an extensive range of forming stakes and hammers, and many small hand tools.

Shift into soup season with us! In this family workshop, we’ll use handbuilding methods to create functional handheld crocks, a vessel worthy of your favorite soup or stew. Using our collection of stamps, tools, and food-safe underglazes you’ll learn decorative techniques to personalize your piece. Youth must be accompanied by an adult. Adults may assist their child(ren) free of charge; additional tickets are required for adults who would like to make their own work. Spread joy to those you love while making functional crafts as a family! Using BCA print studio inks, tools, and mixed media supplies, artist Quinn Johnson teaches fun techniques to create handmade holiday cards and wrapping paper that the recipients will treasure. Connect as a family at the BCA Clay Studio! This hands-on workshop, designed as a shared family experience, includes a wheel throwing demonstration at the beginning of class, access to unlimited clay, and time to create one piece per participant that will then be fired and glazed by the studio. Registration provides access to two wheels and two fired pieces – one for each participating adult and child; no additional pieces with be kept or fired. Registrations will be listed under the participating child’s name, a parent or adult (age 18+) of your choosing will join in the fun! Your family’s fired pieces will be available for pickup at the studio 4-6 weeks after your class.

Taking far-out, spooky, or supernatural drawings and designs developed in class, students will learn to use a silkscreen exposure unit and apply glow in-the-dark inks to make customized screen prints. BCA will provide a tote and a poster, and students are invited to bring one additional surface such as a t-shirt or sweatshirt to print on.

Working with basic hand sewing techniques and easy sew machines, students use simple patterns to cut and create their own funky food stuffies embellished with materials including ribbons, buttons, rickrack, and puffy fabric paints. From a piece of pizza to a triple scoop ice cream cone, the options are as endless as a buffet!

Learn the foundations of handbuilding as we create beastly clay creatures. Using BCA’s collection of tools, learn decorative techniques to add scales, horns, or wings, and customize with colored underglaze to bring your creations to life. This six-week, mixed-level drawing course empowers students to explore 2D artistic techniques including charcoal, perspective, and monoprint while pursuing their own creative interests. Students will acquire new skills and develop a deeper understanding of drawing fundamentals as they work on self-directed projects that reflect their personal artistic vision. With individualized guidance in a small class setting, each student will create meaningful drawings to add to their art portfolio.

Using deliciously colorful food as inspiration, students will create mini masterpieces on paper and cards with easy-to-carve linocut blocks. Students can bring their own edible theme sketch or photo to work from, or use a selection of stencils, if drawing is not your strength. We’ll share techniques and tips to create your tiny prints using our rainbow of studio inks and printing press. No experience required. Sudents should bring a bag lunch.

Demonstrations will review centering, throwing, trimming, and glazing, as well as learning new forms and techniques determined by students. Prerequisite: Proficiency in centering, throwing cups and throwing bowls required. In this fourweek class, students will be guided through the process of creating wheel-thrown sets. Topics will include making multiples of the same piece, stacking mugs, and serving sets specific to a type of food or beverage, such as a sake bottle with matching cups or a coffee cup with a saucer. Students will be coached to use form, dimensions and surface decoration to produce aesthetically cohesive sets and groupings. This intermediate-level course is intended for students with proficiency in centering, throwing cups, and throwing bowls. Class price includes your first bag of clay and all glazes and firings. Discover the unique process of woodblock printing with local artist Ashley Stagner. Students will focus on fundamental relief printing techniques and will transform their designs into unique prints, working with three different types of wood on a variety of papers. The class will then progress to more sophisticated processes, including multicolor printing and two-color reduction block printing. Cost includes all basic materials needed for the class. Expand on your woodcut skills and receive feedback on your work in this supportive class designed for students with experience in woodcut. Students will be guided through techniques to improve carving and printing skills, reduction printing and registration methods, as well as discussions on building aesthetic and conceptual aspects of your work. This four-week class provides an exploration of printmaking. Through demonstrations and hands-on learning, students are introduced to printmaking by creating one-of-a-kind prints. The class will cover creating trace monotypes and etchings on plexiglass and will teach students how to use materials and tools, as well as printing techniques by hand and with the etching press. Students will also develop an understanding of composition, use of color, and intuitive approaches to the medium. Class price includes basic supplies, including inks and paper. Explore the many exciting possibilities of abstract painting through a variety of fun prompts and exercises designed to help you open up and work intuitively. Experiment with the paint of your choice (water-soluble oils, acrylics, or watercolor) and a variety of other mixed media. Learn from fellow students while discussing techniques and ideas in a supportive setting. While prompts will be provided please bring ideas and reference materials for inspiration. Beginners and experienced painters welcome. Shared paint, along with use of BCA’s palettes, easels, painting trays, and other shared equipment is included. Artist Mary Reilly will lead students through her unique, hyper-realistic approach to graphite pencil drawing utilizing a variety of techniques and tools. Working from photos, students will learn the gridding method, making the drawing process more manageable. Students will also learn methods of layering graphite and lifting highlights to bring richness and volume to their pieces. Materials provided. Open Studio is not included in the class price. CONTEMPORARY FIGURE PAINTING

Prerequisite: Oil painting and figure drawing experience required. Revitalize your painting practice with a contemporary approach to the figure using vibrant color and dynamic composition. Intermediate and advanced painters will work from live models each week, using non-toxic, water-soluble oils. Benefit from constructive feedback and individual coaching in a small group environment. Class price includes paint, as well as the use of BCA’s palettes, easels, and painting trays. Prerequisite: Figure painting experience required. Artist and master teacher Gail Salzman leads students through portrait painting with demos, examples, and encouraging feedback. With an emphasis on facial planes and value contrast, this class will help build students’ figure painting skills. Using water-soluble oils and working from a model, students will create two or more small portraits. Class price includes paint as well as the use of BCA’s palettes, easels, and painting trays. This class introduces students to the versatile medium of acrylic paint, and the tools and techniques used by artists to create successful works of art. Learn the basics of mixing colors, blending, and a variety of acrylic painting techniques. Starting with exercises to help understand basic principles, students will be led through representational painting by creating a landscape from reference images, and finish with painting a studio still life. Through group discussions and a supportive atmosphere, this class provides the opportunity for beginners and experienced painters to expand their practice. Learn the basics of making a great photograph from initial exposure, to editing, and printing. The class starts with an overview of camera controls and functions, including aperture, shutter speed, ISO, shooting in RAW, lens choices, metering techniques, and more. Organizing and editing files in Adobe Lightroom are also covered, and students leave with a selection of high-quality prints made on BCA’s archival Epson printer. This class also includes assignments and supportive critique sessions to discuss the composition, content, and concepts explored in your photographs. Students should bring a DSLR or digital Mirrorless Rangefinder camera and a Mac-compatible portable hard drive or flash drive. Open Studio is not included in the class price. DARKROOM PHOTOGRAPHY

Explore the traditional analog black and white darkroom. Students will learn how to properly expose black and white film, process film into negatives, and make silver gelatin prints. One roll of 35mm film, up to 25 sheets of photo paper, and darkroom supplies are included. Students can bring their own manual 35mm or medium-format film camera or inquire with skennelly@burlingtoncityarts.org about borrowing one from the studio (please note, only one camera loan available at this time). Open Studio is not included in the class price. Please choose the Open Studio add-on at the time of registration if you would like access to open studio hours during your class.

PHOTO PRINTING: CYANOTYPES

Saturday, October 18, 10 am-3 pm

In this one-day workshop, students create one-of-a-kind photo prints using the historic cyanotype process. Cyanotypes are made by placing negatives, large transparencies, objects or natural materials on chemically coated paper, and then exposing this paper to UV light. This workshop covers digitally preparing and printing digital negatives, hand-coating paper, composing materials, and making the final print using sunlight or a UV light table. All basic supplies are provided. Optionally, you can bring a Mac-compatible portable drive with a selection of images, and a variety of objects and natural materials with varying levels of opacity. Students should bring a bagged lunch.

Demystify Adobe Photoshop and create the digital images you envision! This class covers basics of the Photoshop toolbox, exposure and color corrections, working with layers and masks to edit selectively, removing and adding content within images, appropriately sizing files for print or the web, and printing on BCA’s Epson inkjet printer. Bring a selection of digital image files or scanned negative files on a Maccompatible flash or hard drive to the first class. Open Studio is not included in the class price. This class takes you through every step of making a photography zine—from idea to print. In this four-week class, students will learn design concepts and techniques and curate a small body of work into a cohesive, physical printed product. Sequencing choices, layout in Adobe Photoshop, digital printing, and handbinding techniques will be covered. This class will also examine the conceptual ideas behind photo books as objects and the relationship between text and image. Whether you want to raise awareness about your practice, bring your digital photos to a physical format, or explore a new process, this class will build your skills as a photographer and artist. While students are encouraged to photograph new images during class, please bring a Mac-compatible external hard drive or flash drive to your first class with 10-30 photographs. In this 90-minute private photography session, students work one-on-one with a BCA professional to photograph two-dimensional or three-dimensional artwork in the BCA Lighting Studio. BCA staff professionally light and photograph the work, and students receive one high-res TIFF and one JPEG of each image. During the photo session, students are responsible for handling artwork. BCA staff will apply basic color correction, density, and contrast adjustments to each image in BCA’s Digital Lab. Students may bring up to 10 total pieces that fall within these size limits; 2D flat artwork no larger than 40 x 60”; 3D sculptural pieces no larger than 24 x 24”. BCA provides a digital camera during the session and a flash drive of final images for students to keep.

TALKING WITH THE CURATOR: PREPARING AN EXHIBITION PROPOSAL

Join Heather Ferrell, BCA’s Curator and Director of Exhibitions, for a one-night workshop to learn best practices when creating an exhibition proposal. During the workshop, participants will explore effective strategies for presenting materials to galleries and museums, refine a project statement, and prepare to speak about their work with a curator. Participants will walk through steps to prepare their exhibition proposal, and end the workshop with time for a Q&A.

Located in downtown Burlington, the BCA Center is housed in the old Ethan Allen Firehouse. The center hosts contemporary art exhibitions, gallery programs, and hosts community events such as the BTV Market and Summer Concert Series. Meeting space is also available for rent.

Programs include drawing/painting, print, clay, jewelry, and darkroom/digital photography. BCA offers seasonal studio memberships.

Refunds can only be given if the request is made at least two weeks prior to the beginning of the class/camp. A cancellation fee of 15% of the class price is nonrefundable. After the two-week window, a class credit will be processed at the discretion of the education director. Class credits are nonrefundable.

Students will be notified if a class is to be canceled due to low registration at least a week in advance and will be refunded in full.
