Struggle?

Struggle?

The Department of Education (DepEd) has unveiled the new MATATAG curriculum, branding it as a cornerstone of the Philippines' educational transformation Envisioned as a bridge between the aspirations of Ambisyon Natin 2040 and the challenges of the 21st century, this curriculum promises to arm Filipino students with the skills and values needed to thrive in a fastchanging world Rooted in the principles of Maka-Diyos, Makatao, Makakalikasan, at Makabansa. Will this new curriculum really shape the Filipino students into much better and ready individuals?

As a bold step forward, the curriculum addresses long-standing weaknesses in foundational areas such as mathematics and reading comprehension These adjustments aim to reverse the alarming decline in the country’s educational performance. With improved learning materials and strategies, the goal is to prepare students to compete both locally and globally However, as the MATATAG curriculum begins its rollout, the reality of its implementation paints a complex picture.

Filipino students already face a grueling academic schedule, with classes running from 7 AM to 4 PM, leaving little time for extracurricular activities or rest Early reports indicate a sharp rise in academic stress among students due to heavier workloads Educators, too, are grappling with concerns about the readiness of schools to adopt the new system. Inadequate facilities, limited resources, and insufficient teacher training have emerged as major barriers to the effective implementation of the curriculum

The curriculum allocates 45 to 60 minutes per subject daily. While this streamlined structure aims to maximize learning efficiency, many students struggle to absorb the dense material within the limited time frame Teachers report that the fast-paced lessons often leave slower learners behind, threatening to widen the gap between high-achieving students and those who require more support This disparity risks undermining the MATATAG curriculum’s inclusive vision.

Yet, amid these challenges, the curriculum also sparks hope Advocates emphasize its potential to close pandemic-era learning gaps and foster wellrounded development, blending academic competence with values formation For this vision to materialize, however, the system must prioritize critical factors: comprehensive teacher training, equitable resource allocation, and a sustainable teaching pace to prevent burnout among students and educators alike

The MATATAG curriculum stands as a bold attempt to redefine Philippine education, but its success hinges on collaboration and commitment Policymakers, educators, and stakeholders must work together to ensure that the reform does not compromise the well-being of students Balancing ambition with practicality, the MATATAG curriculum holds the promise of a brighter future but only if it is implemented with care, inclusivity, and unwavering focus on quality education

Sabrina was 7 years old when she knew that Santa was real Every Christmas, she eagerly wrote letters to him, pouring out her wishes and dreams before leaving her favorite cookies and milk by the chimney, hopeful that Santa would see them.

One Christmas Eve, Sabrina overheard her cousins whispering to one another that Santa wasn't real Her heart sank Refusing to believe it, she left the cookies and milk out, just as she had every year before.

That night, Sabrina decided to stay awake a little longer, hoping to catch a glimpse of the magic she believed in so deeply. Although she wasn't able to see anything, peeking through the door, she heard the soft jingling of bells and the gentle tapping of reindeer hooves above her. After all that, she then fell asleep, repeating the phrase, "Please let this be real," in her mind like a mantra.

The next morning, Sabrina woke with a smile that could have lit the whole world. She rushed down the stairs, seeing the clothes she had wished for were neatly wrapped, along with a note that read, "I appreciate the milk and snickerdoodles, Sabrina. Keep believing." With a sign signatured by Santa on the bottom.

Sabrina jumped up and down in joy, clutching the note to her chest. She knew that as long as she held onto her belief, the magic of Christmas would always be hers to keep.

A warmth that fills the coldest sight.

Twinkling lights and songs so sweet, In this season joy’s complete.

The North Star is a beautiful star, often a symbol of cherished memories amongst people. For Sam and Priya, however, it wasn’t exactly a memory they’d want to cherish.

Sam and Priya were childhood friends who grew up in a small neighborhood. They were an inseparable duo, always dominating school competitions.

One December afternoon, Sam had just finished her classes and was heading to Priya’s classroom to fetch her. Suddenly, Jack stopped her. Jack was a friend of Sam’s, but he was also Priya’s crush—something Priya often shared with Sam.

"Hey, Sam, can I talk to you for a minute?" Jack asked. Knowing Priya’s patience, Sam decided to go with him. The two headed to the park outside the school.

"So, what's bugging you, J?" Sam asked as they sat on a bench across from the spot she and Priya usually hung out. At this moment, Priya had finished her class. Seeing Sam wasn’t waiting for her, she assumed Sam had already gone to their usual spot at the park.

At the park, Sam thought Jack might need help with schoolwork. But his next words shocked her. Just as Priya arrived, Jack hesitated before saying, "Sam, I know you're my friend, but I need to tell you something that I've kept for a long time”. Then, he confessed, "I love Priya."

Sam was stunned, but thrilled to know that her two closest friends could finally be together! She reached for Jack’s hands, ready to spill the truth, but before she could, Priya appeared. Seeing them in that position, Priya misinterpreted everything. Tears streaming down her face, she ran away, thinking her best friend had betrayed her.

"Priya, wait! You misunderstood!" Sam yelled, chasing after her. But Priya stopped, turning back with tears and anger.

"Oh, I know exactly what you did! You snake!" Priya shouted. "I thought we were best friends!"

Sam froze, stunned by Priya’s words. Tears streamed down her face as Priya ran out of the park. Jack arrived moments later, only to find Sam crying.

The next week was awkward for both girls. Priya ignored all of Sam’s attempts to reach out. Hurt and confused, Sam turned to Jack for support, which only hurt Priya even more. When the school’s Christmas Dance was announced, Sam remembered how much Priya had dreamed of dancing with Jack. But with everything that had happened, the thought now only brought her guilt. Jack encouraged Sam to tell Priya the truth and even offered to help.

The night of the Christmas Dance finally arrived. The North Star shone brightly, and Sam traced its light, recalling all the wonderful memories she and Priya had shared during their childhood.

Jack, looking dashing in his suit, approached her with a smile. "You look stunning, Sam," he said. Across the room, Priya avoided looking their way. Sam’s heart ached

The music began, and Jack led Sam to the dance floor. But as they swayed, Sam spotted Priya watching, tears welling up in her eyes. Without hesitation, Sam pulled away from Jack and approached her.

"Priya, we need to talk," Sam said firmly.

Priya hesitated but followed Sam outside. Under the twinkling North Star, Sam revealed the truth—the truth about Jack’s confession and her intention to tell Priya all along.

"Why didn’t you tell me?" Priya asked softly.

Sam’s voice trembled. "I didn’t want to hurt you."

Tears flowed freely down Priya’s face. "I’m sorry, Sam. I misunderstood everything."

The two friends embraced tightly, the warmth of their reconciliation shining as brightly as the North Star above. Jack soon joined them with a smile. "Merry Christmas, ladies."

As the trio gazed up at the sparkling sky, Priya took Jack’s hand. Sam smiled, knowing her friends had finally found each other.

The North Star, once a symbol of heartache, now shone brightly, representing forgiveness, friendship, and love.

Snowy breeze blows the endless sky With songs of carol being cheered on Two snowflakes dance in reckless abandon And create a song for the Christmas cry

THEPOWEROFRESILIENCEANDPREPAREDNESS

You turn on the television. “NEWS FLASH: Kanlaon spews ash again! Negrenses from Canlaon City need your help! It is time you respond to calamities as a Negrense!” You turn off the television Calamities will come whether you like it or not, in the form of natural disasters such as earthquakes, typhoons, volcanic eruptions, or man-made crises like wars or terrorism These disasters have increased in frequency due to climate change, rapid urbanization, and other factors As our community faces these challenges, what can we do as citizens? We can be informed about responses to calamities. These are the actions and measures taken before, during, or after a disaster or event

During these disasters, we take significance of the idea of preparedness, the key to persevering in times of crisis While it is true that readiness is key, the true power of response comes from the resilience of people, which is our ability to bounce back and recover during times of adversity A resilient community is one that supports each member in times of need, providing both emotional support and practical aid during difficult times. In the face of disasters, our neighbors can be the first responders, offering help, providing food and shelter, and giving much-needed hope to those affected—especially the most vulnerable members of our community: the elderly, children, and people with disabilities Sometimes, adversities often transcend borders, not just affecting individuals and communities but also nations and entire regions. In such cases, unity, perseverance, and resilience become paramount When disasters strike one nation, other nations help them recover, and we witness surges of volunteers, donations, and solidarity.

However, while there are actions we can take, it cannot be denied that people can be traumatized based on their experience; it can also be fleeting and fragmented and can leave a deep scar on them While personal and communal strength are essential, they should not be viewed as substitutes for adequate structural support. When disasters strike, the real test is whether the systems in place governmental, infrastructural, and financial are capable of supporting the community in the face of adversity. A common shortcoming in the response to calamity is the lack of preparedness, cooperation, and bureaucracy; therefore, organizations and aid agencies tend to struggle to respond to these calamities effectively In many instances, aid may be delayed, misallocated, or insufficient to address the magnitude of the disaster. Sometimes, systems fail to meet the needs of the affected citizens, and resilience alone cannot overcome the deficiencies in these frameworks

For instance, the COVID-19 pandemic was highlighted by the disparity in the economic and political interests, which tended to be more focused on compared to the less fortunate communities that were left to pick up the pieces after media attention faded. Furthermore, the influences of natural disasters typhoons, wildfires, and earthquakes expose the most vulnerability of communities. It’s clear that responding to calamities requires not just an emotional or immediate response but also a concerted effort to address the root causes of vulnerability and build resilient systems.

Moreover, I believe a global approach to a disaster should be necessary—one that fosters cooperation and resilience rather than competition between nations The interdependence of nations means that one calamity is often felt by other states, similar to a ripple effect. Whether it is the spread of diseases to wars to economic downfall and mass migration to environmental collapse, we should play a part in the rebuilding of the world to become a better place where there is no inequality rooted in race, financial status, and color, and no stigma because of disabilities and age, because in the face of calamities, we stand as one, one state, one country, one race, one species, one as humans.

Response to calamities, while filled with compassion and resilience, often reveals shortcomings and vulnerable sides in how societies are organized and how resources are allocated While volunteers, donations, and emotional solidarity play a key role in immediate recovery, systemic change is necessary for long-term resilience Moving forward, we must shift our focus to the bigger side and create proactive solutions such as investing in infrastructure, improving healthcare services, preserving climate, and international cooperation to build a world where we face the inevitable together with preparedness and resilience
