Students express excitement over Hugh Jackman being chosen as the spring commencement speaker.

Actor, philanthropist, Broadway star and certiﬁed Australian are just a few identifying characteristics and notable achievements held by Ball State University’s Spring 2026 Commencement Speaker — Hugh Jackman.

Jackman was ﬁrst spotted on campus in September 2025, in the David Letterman Communication and Media Building, according to a brief released by NewsLink Indiana.

The Oscar-nominated actor has since made his presence known in both the campus and Muncie community, contributing to an acting workshop led by Ball State faculty member Sutton Foster and later attending the memorial for fallen Delaware County Sheriff’s Corporal Blake Reynolds.

In an interview on President Geoffrey Mearns’ podcast “Our Call to Beneﬁcence,” Jackman said the reason he had become a part of the Ball State community was his desire to dip his toes into teaching.

“I had this desire to perhaps teach and be around young people who I know are thirsty and a little scared of the unknown, and to be somewhat of a bridge. I was doing “The Music Man” with Sutton, and [she] was telling me about Ball State, about the people, and actually how important it was to her, how much she got out of it and how it inspired her,” Jackman said on the podcast.

It was this desire to experience teaching young people and to give back to the arts community, speciﬁcally in the realm of arts education, that brought Jackman to Ball State

Fourth-year Ryan Goldberg, a double major in theatre directing and ﬁlm/media studies, reﬂected on her experience with Jackman’s workshops and additional events this past year.

“It was incredible!” she said. “[Hugh] and Sutton had a luncheon with the junior and senior stage management and directing majors last fall, and both of them offered amazing insight.”

She went on to describe the advice she received during these events, saying, “It was super interesting to hear their perspectives as working professionals, giving us tips and advice as we enter the industry. He is the kindest man and loves being able to help offer his wisdom onto the next generation of artists.”

Jackman is receiving an honorary Doctor of Arts degree during the spring commencement ceremony, as announced in an April 6 Ball State press release.

“Hugh is a talented and versatile artist and an enthusiastic advocate for the arts and humanities. For these reasons and many more, I am grateful that he accepted my invitation to be our Commencement speaker,” Mearns said in the press release. “I appreciate that Hugh continues to be gracious in sharing his time and talent with our University community. I look forward to hearing his address to our Class of 2026.”

However, Mearns was not the only one to express excitement regarding Jackman’s commencement address, as the campus and the surrounding community have been buzzing since the announcement of the Wolverine actor’s promised appearance at the

lawn of the Quad.

First-year sports broadcasting student Grant Denney also exhibited excitement at the prospect of a celebrity’s presence at this spring’s commencement ceremony.

“I think it is awesome that he can take time to come here and speak to the graduating class and even help inspire them to go on and live whatever their dream may be,” he said. “I think it is one of the coolest things I’ve ever heard and seen, and [I] hope that he can be the speaker again when I graduate.”

While many underclassmen, not just Denney, have been humming with excitement, those receiving one of the 2,800 assorted degrees, ranging from baccalaureate to master’s, have also conveyed their enthusiasm.

Hayden Kedrowski, a graduate student receiving her Master of Arts in Applied Behavior Analysis at commencement, said the announcement felt personal and especially momentous for her.

“It’s really a full circle moment with Hugh Jackman speaking at commencement,” she said. “In middle school, we went on a ﬁeld trip to see “Les Misérables” in theaters. In high school, we sang songs from “The Greatest Showman.” Some of my fondest memories are choir concerts, where music he also performed was involved.”

Ball State University President Geoffrey Mearns addressed student concerns directly in an exclusive Q&A with university student media.

The Ball State Daily News, NewsLink Indiana and Ball Bearings Magazine sat down with university president Geoffrey Mearns in a joint, exclusive, 30-minute interview April 17, asking about a wide array of topics including student activism on campus, The Village Revitalization Project and tuition affordability. The dialogue exchange can be read below:

Q: How do you balance protecting free speech on campus with maintaining an inclusive and respectful environment for all students?

A: It was January of 2020 when the board adopted our new policies with respect to freedom of expression. They’re commonly referred to in higher education as the University of Chicago principles. That was an important inflection point at the university, because that led to actually greater permissiveness with respect to freedom of expression on campus.

And then, in light of those university board approved principles, we then … did a comprehensive view review of all of our existing policies to bring those policies that related to expressive activity and freedom of expression in full alignment with those principles. That process probably took us about two or three years, and it’s those University of Chicago principles, coupled with the policies that are guided by those principles that strike the balance that you just asked about.

That’s how, through both board principles as well as board-approved policies, that [university administrators] strike what we believe is the appropriate balance between expressive activity [while] allowing us to

continue to fulfill our mission of education, research and community engagement.

Q: Can you walk us through how the university responds when students say their concerns are being ignored?

A: We have a variety of ways in which we listen to the voices of our students … First of all, the student voice in the administration of the university and fulfilling the mission is critical.

We have a long-term strategic plan. The first iteration of this long-term strategic plan was developed in 2018 and then was approved by our board [of trustees] in late 2018. There was a student representative on that small committee, and then we sent out surveys to faculty, staff, graduates and students. A very high number of students responded to that survey.

Then, we had on-campus open forums to discuss certain topics, and we had a forum that was specifically targeted toward students. In that process, we also met with the [student government association] (SGA), the elected representatives of the student body. That same process was repeated when the board reaffirmed our long-term strategic plan last year in May 2025. That’s one way in which the student voice is recognized.

There are [also] a variety of activities on campus. SGA is certainly a very important forum, but there are [also] student advisory councils in many of the academic colleges in the athletics department. There’s a student athlete advisory council that is actually [for] the student-athletes. The 400+ student athletes that we have select their peers to represent and bring their concerns to the attention of the athletic administration [and] the athletic director. It’s a vehicle for them to express their concerns outside of maybe expressing it directly to their coaches.

So there’s a variety of pretty comprehensive

mechanisms in place to hear the concerns and perspectives of students.

Aidan Davis is [also] a governor-appointed student trustee on the board … We have an application process, and then there’s a committee in SGA that trims that list down to 10 names. Then, we submit 10 names to the governor and his staff for consideration. But the governor is the individual who selects the student representative. Aidan is a very active and engaged student trustee.

Q: When students or faculty criticize the university publicly, do you see that as a leadership challenge, a free speech success or something in between?

A: I probably wouldn’t choose either of those options. What I would describe it as is an appropriate opportunity for faculty, students and staff ... Just this morning, I met with the staff council. I meet with the staff council because their voices also are important, irrespective of whether they agree with [a university administrator] or whether they have a different perspective. To me, one of the great opportunities of being a university president is that there’s so many voices, and it’s important to hear the perspective of those voices.

What’s interesting about a university — which I think is different [from] being, for example, the CEO of a large company — is a company tends to have a relatively small number of stakeholders. They’ve got their customers, they’ve got their employees and then they’ve got their shareholders or investors. Oftentimes, their interests or perspectives are aligned. Universities have [a] much, much larger number of constituencies and a much wider diverse perspective of those.

As you know much better than I do, there’s no one single student perspective on any of these issues, so it’s important for us to do as

much as we can to hear not just the voices of the people in those various constituency groups but the different perspectives within each of those constituencies, because they’re not monolithic in any of them.

Q: What is the line between protected student expression and behavior that results in disciplinary action?

A: So that, again, I would refer you to take a look at the university policy on expressive activity, because that is where you find those definitions. And then, of course, it’s the responsibility of our colleagues, particularly in student affairs, to determine which activities are protected as expressive activities and which — under the policy and under the applicable law — falls on the other side of that line. But, the starting point is the definitions that are in the policy.

Q: What possible problems do you foresee in the coming years with the increased activity of student protests on campus?

A: I don’t know if you would describe it as “increased.” … The level of protest activity that we have right now pales in comparison to the protests that occurred during the Vietnam

era, during the Civil Rights era in the ‘60s and ‘70s — when hundreds and hundreds of students were walking out of classes and protesting. So when I look at the historical perspective, the level of protest activity is not anywhere near that level.

Q: How does the office of strategic planning and support differ in function from the DEI (diversity, equity and inclusion) office (office of inclusive excellence)? What specific resources or services were lost when the DEI office closed, if any?

A: This was last April when I announced that we were now in full compliance with President Trump’s executive orders and the guidance that came from the Department of Education and the Department of Justice. The resources that were available to students through, like the multicultural center, are still available. The changes have been primarily about ensuring that all students have access to those resources. So, it’s less about the curtailment, or reduction, of resources than ensuring — under the letter and spirit of that executive order — that irrespective of somebody’s race, gender or ethnicity, that all of those resources were available.

Now, under the state law that followed, it was no longer permissible, or lawful, for us to have a speciﬁc ofﬁce, so we were able to deploy many of those people and use their talents and skills to support the implementation of our strategic plan.

Q: Overall, what are some of the biggest challenges the university is currently facing?

A: To me, there is increasing skepticism about the value of a college degree. We’re, I believe, swimming against the tide … It’s about access, success and impact. We’re meeting the challenge: what we have to do is continue to beat the drum and make sure that people know about the value [of a college degree]. We don’t have the capacity to solve problems at all campuses and universities, but we’re working very hard to demonstrate that there is still value [in] attending Ball State and earning a Ball State Degree.

Revitalization & redevelopments Revitalization & redevelopments

Facilities involved in the revitalization of The Village are set to open in the fall.

The university’s $195 million revitalization of The Village, which began in 2024, is encroaching on a milestone — the opening of many of the facilities that have been under development.

The idea to redevelop the area was sparked by the long-standing recognition that The Village had declined after years of disinvestment, even though it remains one of the most important and popular areas adjacent to Ball State’s campus, according to the director of real estate services at Ball State, Chris Palladino.

“Ball State has been working for years to develop a long-term vision for the district

— one informed by community priorities, campus planning and examples from other universities that have successfully revitalized the areas around their campuses,” Palladino said via email.

Palladino said the revitalization of The Village is intended to strengthen the connection between Ball State, The Village and the broader Muncie community by creating a more vibrant district with new spaces for arts and culture, innovation, dining, housing, hospitality and community gathering.

The ﬁve main sites making their way into The Village include the Performing Arts Center and Cantio Hotel, the Mixed-Use Development, the Center of Innovation and Collaboration, the Village Green and the Village South Residential Developments, all

of which are expected to open their doors later this year.

“We anticipate that construction will be completed this summer, and then we can move the students and the programs in there over the summer, so that when classes resume in August, it’s up and running,” Ball State University President Geoffrey Mearns said in an interview April 17.

Each new facility, Palladino said, has several elements that could directly impact the student experience.

Director of Ball State University’s Center for Innovation and Collaboration, Bette Smith, shared her thoughts on the revitalization and her hopes for the center.

“The center was designed to provide open work space for students to collaborate and

who are interested in starting a business in the creative / tech / media spaces,” Smith said via email. “We’re building on great things already happening on campus, and we hope that the center will be a place where students can experiment and learn with new tech — all in one space.”

The center will have multiple open lab and studio spaces, according to Ball State University, such as an AR/VR/XR lab, a prototyping lab, video and editing studios and a podcast studio, as well as drones and 3D printers that will be available for use.

Smith said that The Center for Innovation and Collaboration’s mission is not only to be a hub connecting the university with community and industry partners, but also to solve real-world problems through innovation and collaboration, specifically in the space of media, technology, art and design.

“The Center for Innovation and Collaboration is designed to support entrepreneurship, collaboration and community-connected learning,” Palladino said.

Aside from the collaboration of dining, retail, gathering spaces, housing and improved walkability throughout The Village that can make the area around campus more active, Palladino said the most important need is a balanced mix of new facilities that will appeal to a broader market segment, not just undergraduate students.

“Our goal is to expand the businesses and activities in The Village so [that] it appeals to a broader market segment than simply undergraduate students,” Palladino said.

The 65,000-square foot Performing Arts Center will provide modern venues for the Department of Theatre and Dance, according to Ball State Magazine. The facility will also provide a scene shop that includes paint and welding areas, a costume shop, a 450-seat mainstage theater and a 4,000-square-foot flexible black box studio, according to Ball State University’s website.

“The construction will take probably eight to 12 weeks for the Department of Theatre and Dance to move their costume shop and all of their other equipment into the Performing Arts Center. So there will not be a performance in the Performing Arts Center until December, and then student performances in January,” Mearns said.

Department Chair William Jenkins of the Department of Theatre and Dance said that the Department of Theatre and Dance is very fortunate that the university is invested in their students, faculty, staff, alumni and programs.

“I hope it will help the community of Muncie see the extraordinary talents of our students and my colleagues,” Jenkins said.

This revitalization also includes the addition of the Cantio Hotel, a building with on-site

dining. It has a ground-floor restaurant and bar, a rooftop restaurant and lounge and a café, along with an exercise room and a gift shop, according to The Cantio’s website.

“Already people are calling us to schedule events at the center and inquiring about the Cantio Hotel and the new Performing Arts Center,” Smith said.

But the hotel is falling a bit behind some of the other facilities.

“The hotel is the one that’s probably slipped a bit. That will probably not open for guests until maybe November and December,” Mearns said.

Mearns said that he was hoping to use the hotel to welcome guests for the 100th homecoming event that is coming up in October, but with the delay, he is a little

“disappointed” that they will be unable to use the building.

However, this does not include the other facilities that have yet to be completed in the revitalization.

“While the Performing Arts Center, The Cantio Hotel and the Center for Innovation and Collaboration are all expected to open this Fall, we’re also excited to move forward on Village Green and the Village South residential development,” Palladino said.

Outside hitter Patrick Rogers has

led a storied career in men’s volleyball.

Patrick Rogers’ love for volleyball started in high school when his mother signed him up for a club team. He said he grew up around the sport, with both of his sisters playing volleyball, and his mother playing in college.

But Rogers also played basketball and baseball, so volleyball was new to him. He originally thought he would play college basketball, but his newfound love for volleyball changed his mind.

“I went and played and then just really fell in love with it and still have,” Rogers said.

When Rogers decided to play collegiate volleyball, he went to St. Francis College, a school not too far from his hometown of Rutherford, New Jersey. He had a successful freshman campaign, as he was selected as the Northeast Conference (NEC) freshman of the year and made the NEC ﬁrst team.

But Rogers’ career at St. Francis Brooklyn was quickly cut short.

“They cut all their athletic programs,” Rogers said.

Every student athlete at the school had to decide on the next step, but luckily for Rogers, he was still a freshman with three more years of college eligibility.

“I knew I wanted to keep playing, and I was lucky enough to get the opportunity from Donan [Cruz] to come out and watch me during U21 training when I was out in California,” Rogers said.

Ball State Men’s Volleyball’s former head coach, Donan Cruz, offered Rogers a spot on the team. The outside hitter accepted and started his career at Ball State in his sophomore year. He immediately made an impact in his new home, starting all 21 matches he appeared in, tallying 269 kills and hitting at a .361 hit percentage.

The success Rogers had in his sophomore season at Ball State gave him the opportunity to play for the USA collegiate team and collegiate national beach team. Rogers said the transition from college to the national team was similar to his transition from high school to college, with the level of play increasing.

He said there were so many “unbelievable” players at that level, and that the experience in itself transformed his play on the court.

“Probably the biggest reason for my improvement in volleyball is the talent there and how awesome it is,” Rogers said.

His junior season was a big improvement over his sophomore season, as he started in

29 of 30 matches he appeared in and nearly doubled his kills, recording 363 on the season. The outside hitter had another big opportunity to showcase his skills on a national level, as his junior year play landed him on the 2025 Men’s U23 National Team and the Beach Collegiate National Team.

Rogers said the opportunity to play with players all across the country in Puerto Rico and Guatemala created “memories he’ll never forget.”

What he also found at Ball State was a sense of community. He said the competition aspect of volleyball at Ball State has been easy because it is like “going to battle with your best friends.”

“We were close at St. Francis, but it’s nothing like how it is here,” Rogers said. “We’re all best friends and [we] hang out all the time.

Sophomore outside hitter Wil Basilio has played the same position as Rogers for two years, and he said that while he has learned a lot from Rogers on the court, a big takeaway has been how to act off the court.

[There are] different types of volleyball players, and he is a very aggressive one, and he will hit the ball until his arm falls off.”

and [you] build a really strong bond that week,” Rogers said.

In his senior season, Rogers has had his best year to date. April 16, he was selected to the All-MIVA (Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association) ﬁrst team, but that was not the end of his accolades. Rogers was also selected as the MIVA player of the year.

Rogers said that Iandolo brought the whole team in a huddle after practice and announced the All-MIVA ﬁrst and second teams. Rogers said Iandolo brought him out last and honored him with the award in front of the rest of the team.

“It was awesome just to celebrate with them; they got all excited,” Rogers said. “It really can’t happen without them. It is their award just as much as it is mine.”

Rogers said that his experience with the USA national team prepared him to have a season like this. He said he felt he could bring an All-MIVA level to this Cardinals’ squad.

“I’m just happy I could be a little part of it,” Rogers said.

“The biggest thing he’s taught me in my time spent with him is just the importance of being a good person on top of a good player,” Basilio said.

Rogers entered the program in senior setter Griffin Satterfield’s sophomore season, and Satterfield said it has been awesome to be around Rogers the past three years and see the growth he has had.

Satterﬁeld described Rogers as a “rock star” whenever he is on the court, and he said he has learned a lot playing alongside him.

“[There are] different types of volleyball players, and he is a very aggressive one, and he will hit the ball until his arm falls off,” Satterﬁeld said.

As Rogers wraps up his career at Ball State, volleyball is far from being over. The outside hitter said he strives to play professionally overseas after he graduates, and he is already working on making that possible.

“Hopefully I’ll be able to play professional volleyball overseas, probably [in] either Germany or France, and then eventually hopefully make [my] way up in different leagues,” Rogers said.

He said that, throughout the process, he wants to keep participating on the USA national teams over the summer.

“The main thing is to stay in that USA gym because of how big that is in the summer [for] improvements in my game,” Rogers said.

Rogers said that throughout his time at Ball State, his main goal has been to make positive impacts on everyone he interacts with. Whether that is people watching his games or people he runs into on campus, he said the “world is a better place if you make it a better place.”

“Ball State has changed me for the better,” Rogers said. “It really has improved my life so much.”

Carly Spletzer has dealt with a long list of injuries but has come out with an accomplished career.

Battling through adversity

According to the National Institutes of Health, the NCAA Injury Surveillance System estimates that around 250,000 collegiate athletes across all divisions sustain injuries annually. Senior cross country and track and ﬁeld runner Cary Spletzer is part of that statistic, but in a bigger way.

Spletzer has sustained her own share of injuries during her Ball State career, from her sophomore season through this past graduate season. A stress fracture in her tibia twice, a stress fracture in her femur that she ran through and two more ﬂare-ups in her femur have caused her to miss time in each season she has run.

“I’ve had quite a few injuries and setbacks,” Spletzer said.

But the goals Spletzer set for herself always kept her coming back to the sport. Even though there were long, grueling days spent in the pool to rehab, and eight weeks that she was unable to run because she was in so

much pain, Spletzer still could put together a successful year-long career at Ball State.

“I knew I wanted to show up for my team and be there for them,” Spletzer said. “I just kept remembering the things that I wanted to achieve.”

Spletzer said running has always been a key part of her life. Her father ran track and ﬁeld and cross country at Toledo, so growing up, she had someone to look up to in the sport. She said she would participate in “road races” growing up, and that her love for the sport took off in junior high.

She said she had a lot of early success during junior high, but her Division I aspirations became real when she got to high school. Spletzer said she had a really good coach at Lakota East High School in Cincinnati, Ohio, and that his belief in her inspired her desire to succeed at the next level.

“He coached me really well in high school, and things just started to really click,” Spletzer said.

Spletzer made it to state in the 3200 race in track and ﬁeld her freshman year, and

she said it was an “eye-opening” experience that showed her how good she could be. Her success in high school continued, as she was a two-time all-state selection, conference runner of the year in 2020 and was selected to allregional teams in 2019 and 2020.

That success led Spletzer to Ball State, and she was recruited by the former head coach. She said that although being recruited amid the COVID-19 pandemic was unique, Ball State felt like “home” from the start.

A big thing Spletzer wanted in her career, whatever school she ended up at, was happiness outside of the sport. She said she became close with the class of runners she came into Ball State with, and it made everything outside of the sport that much more fun.

In a career full of unexpected injuries, Spletzer said she knows she has found that in Muncie.

“What I always told myself was if I take running out of the picture, just knowing that I can be happy outside of running and be successful in other areas,” Spletzer said.

Spletzer has led the best overall season of her career so far, headlined by her personal best 5k time of 16:45.08.

“It hasn’t been easy, and there’s been a lot of setbacks, and I think that’s made the successful moments even more exciting and more rewarding,” Spletzer said.

Assistant cross-country and track-and-ﬁeld coach Rachel Nichwitz said that no one would have faulted Spletzer for stepping away from the sport after all the injuries she sustained. Nichwitz said it is “incredibly impressive” to see Spletzer not only come back from injuries, but have the best season of her career in her last season.

“It’s a testament to how bad she wants it, a testament to how committed she is to being great at this sport,” Nichwitz said.

Nichwitz said it is “exciting” to have an athlete like Spletzer in the program. She said Spletzer has an inner drive that she does not need extra encouragement from coaches.

“It’s exciting to have an athlete who wants it just as bad as I do for her,” Nichwitz said.

Nichwitz ran four years at the University of Arkansas, and she said she often jokes with Spletzer that she will be a faster runner than herself. She said it is validating as a coach when an athlete surpasses her.

“She’s gonna be faster than me,” Nichwitz said. “She’s close, and she’s gonna be here soon, and so it’s exciting to see that.”

Spletzer said that while the accolades she has earned in her career at Ball State are great, the biggest thing she has taken away from her time as a student-athlete is the growth she has experienced as a person.

“The growth that I’ve had here and the

experiences that have shaped me into the person I am today have set me up well for the future,” Spletzer said.

Balancing being a student-athlete has not been easy for Spletzer in her career, but she has accomplished a lot while also completing her graduate degree in speech pathology.

“Balancing schoolwork and running together has been difﬁcult, but deﬁnitely rewarding, and I don’t regret it at all,” Spletzer said.

Despite her running career coming to an end, Spletzer said she is trying not to focus on the end of her career. She said she is taking it day by day as her career wraps up.

“It hasn’t really set in,” Spletzer said. “Right now I’m just focusing on one meet at a time, one day at a time, and just trying to work towards my goals.”

This is Spletzer’s last year running collegiately, but she said she still has another year of her master’s program. Although her running career at Ball State is over, Spletzer said she wants to stay active and in the sport.

Spletzer said going Division I in athletics has always been a goal of hers, and she said she is grateful to experience that at Ball State.

“I’m just grateful for the opportunity,” Spletzer said. “It’s just been a really cool opportunity that not everyone gets to do.”

This past year was full of ups and downs for Ball State Athletics, as some teams had success while others aimed to rebuild themselves.

From fall to winter to spring, 19 different teams are competing for Ball State University, and this is how their seasons turned out.

Ball State Football had a roller coaster of a season for head coach Mike Uremovich’s ﬁrst year. Uremovich came in with virtually no roster and no coaching staff. Director of Athletics Jeff Mitchell hired Uremovich in early December, so the head coach did not have much time to put together a full roster.

Despite the new faces on the team, Uremovich and company still had the Cardinals in contention for a bowl appearance, as the team sat at 4-5 late in the season. But the Cardinals lost their last three games, ﬁnishing the year at 4-8 overall and 3-5 in the MidAmerican Conference (MAC).

A big piece for the Cardinals on the season was defensive end Nathan Voorhis, who led the team with 12 sacks and was second in the MAC. Quarterback Kiael Kelly returned to the quarterback position after two seasons away from it and passed for 1,583 yards, 11 touchdowns and eight interceptions. Kelly rushed for 600 yards and ﬁve touchdowns on the season.

But the future is bright for Uremovich. The Cardinals had the second-best transfer class in the MAC and brought in a talented group of recruits. Redshirt junior transfer quarterback Tyler Mizzell will likely lead the way as quarterback one, as he is coming off a successful season at Concord University.

Ball State Men’s Basketball had its worst season to date under former head coach Michael Lewis. Lewis spent four years with the program, but the last three resulted in losing records. The 12-19 ﬁnish this past season caused Director of Athletics Jeff Mitchell to ﬁre Lewis and look towards new leadership.

The Cardinals had a less-than-ideal start to the season, dropping their ﬁrst ﬁve conference games and entering MAC play winless.

Sophomore guard Davion Hill led the team with 14 points per game, and junior guard Armoni Zeigler followed closely behind with 12.5 points per game.

In early April, Mitchell announced that Chris Capko would be the Cardinals’ 21st basketball coach in school history. Capko comes in from Southern Methodist University (SMU) and has had a storied career as an assistant and associate coach.

Ball State Women’s Basketball concluded the season with a record of 26-7, 16-2 in the MAC competition, tying ﬁrst with Miami. The Cardinals went 16-2 from January to March in the second half of the season before falling to Toledo in the MAC tournament semiﬁnals.

Ball State Women’s Basketball led the conference in categories including points per game, rebounding and assists. The Cardinals also ﬁnished second in blocks. Two Ball State Women’s basketball players were named to the All-MAC First Team: senior center Tessa Towers and senior guard Bree Salenbien.

Sophomore guard Grace Kingery was named All-MAC Honorable Mention. Freshman forward Aniss Tagayi was selected to the MAC All-Freshman Team and to the MAC All-Defensive Team.

Top performers for this year’s Ball State team include senior guard Bree Salenbien, who ﬁnished ﬁfth in the MAC in scoring, averaging 15.8 points; senior center Tessa

Towers, who finished fourth in rebounding, averaging 8.4 per game; junior guard Karsyn Norman, who finished third in assists, averaging 4.9; and Salenbien finishing eighth in blocks, averaging 0.9.

This marks Ball State Women’s Basketball’s ninth consecutive winning season in a row, with their last one coming in 2016-17.

The 2025 Ball State Women’s Volleyball season was the tenth season with Kelli Miller Phillips as head coach, and it was one of her best seasons yet.

The Cardinals ﬁnished off their campaign with an overall record of 21-10 and a conference record of 17-1. This was Phillips’ third-best overall record at Ball State, just behind the 2024 and 2021 seasons.

Ball State’s one loss in the MAC regular season propelled the team to rack up a plethora of MAC awards at the end of the year, including MAC player of the year and coach of the year.

Sophomore Carson Tyler was awarded the player of the year award after leading the Cardinals and the MAC in kills per set with 4.22. Tyler was also awarded four MAC player of the week awards, along with 29 kills in their win over Toledo Oct. 10, which was the most by a MAC player in a conference match. Although Tyler had an outstanding season with Ball State, she entered the transfer portal after the season and committed to Marquette.

The MAC coach of the year award was presented to none other than Kelli Miller Phillips, her third time winning the award, with her previous wins in 2021, 2022 and 2025. Phillips led the team to a 17-1 record in the conference, along with winning the regular-season conference championship.

Live music creates and strengthens connections among a community.

It was an early Sunday morning in July, and I had just gotten dressed to attend church with my mom. I was walking down the stairs when she said she had a surprise and handed me an envelope. As I opened it with a questioning look, I saw the words “One Direction: Take Me Home tour.”

Staring at my mom in disbelief, I ran to our family calendar to look at the date, realizing it was that night. I started jumping up and down, and my mom laughed at me. She had bought lawn tickets for 9-year-old me’s favorite boy band.

could not ﬁnd a babysitter for that night, so I went with them. Since then, I have attended over 20 live music events. At every concert I attend, I buy merchandise and I have a collection of t-shirts, lanyards, wristbands and posters.

In Harry Styles’ song “Aperture,” the chorus reads, “We belong together,” and this phrase captures how I feel about live music. Musicians and events bring people together, creating connections among strangers and forming an unspoken understanding that we are all here for the feeling of belonging.

I was around 6 years old when I attended my ﬁrst concert, the American rock band Styx. My family had bought tickets with friends, and I assume they

to bed excited to walk through the park gates. Hearing the songs that I loved so much, surrounded by others with the same love, is therapeutic and healing.

During Gracie Abrams’ performance of her song “Close to You,” the girls around us started jumping and dancing with me and my friend Elizabeth. All that could be seen were girls smiling ear to ear and belting lyrics at one another as the sun set on Chicago’s skyline.

I have always referred to mom as my “concert buddy,” seeing as she would go with me to any show I wanted to see, whether she knew the music or not. Growing up, concerts have always been special to me, partially because they were core memories with my mom. We have seen Harry Styles, 5 Seconds of Summer, Taylor Swift, Troye Sivan, Shawn Mendes and more together. For her birthday two summers ago, we drove to Noblesville, Indiana for the day to see Dan and Shay together.

I met Elizabeth when she came to Ball State during my second year, and she has become not only one of my best friends, but a breath of fresh air in my life. She and I bond over our favorite songs and musicians, and it has always been a major topic of discussion in our conversations. She has been with me during some of my lowest points, and as we sang the chorus of “Blowing Smoke” by Gracie Abrams to each other, I knew I would never forget that moment in my life.

My brother, Kyle, does concert photography as a side job, and I have grown up with my family having a deep love and appreciation for music and live shows.

Recently, one of my best friends, Kylee, and I decided at the last minute to attend a day of the March Madness music festival in Indianapolis. Kylee and I met during our ﬁrst year at Ball State, when we lived on the same dorm ﬂoor, and she has been one of my rocks these past four years.

My brother and dad found their paths here, and now I have found mine.

Walking onto Ball State’s campus my ﬁrst year of college did not feel unfamiliar. Instead, it felt like stepping into something I had already been a part of my entire life.

Before I ever sat in a classroom, before I ever met print deadlines as the editor-inchief for The Ball State Daily News, or even introduced myself as a journalism major, Ball State was already a huge part of my story.

My dad walked these same paths on campus decades ago.

He graduated from Ball State in 1992 with a degree in teaching. My older brother graduated a few years before me, graduating in 2023 with a degree in physical education teaching. I spent my ﬁrst year on campus with him, and he helped get me adjusted to college and introduced me to some lifelong friends. Before I ofﬁcially became a student, I was already connected to Ball State in so many different ways.

Being a third-generation student has shaped how I understand this university and my place within it.

Growing up, Ball State was always a huge part of my life. My family visited the campus every year to watch a football game. We would stay overnight for the weekend, and my dad would take us on tours around campus. It was the first time I learned what Frog Baby was, and it was the first time I learned that Bracken Library was built to look like a stack of books. It was the first time I experienced what my future could soon look like.

Ball State also showed up in the stories my dad would tell about him and his college roommates, and in the way my family talked about college in general. It was not just another Indiana university to us. It was a place where my dad and brother found amazing opportunities and where their lives

started to take shape. It was where they found themselves, and I wanted that too.

So when it came time to choose where I would pursue my undergraduate degree, it was not like I was starting from scratch. It felt like I had the opportunity to continue something that had already been set in motion long before I was born.

Of course, I wanted to go to Ball State because I grew to love journalism in high school, and Ball State’s journalism program was the best one out of the schools I had been accepted to.

However, there was also something that seemed so perfect about continuing my family’s legacy at Ball State.

But there is deﬁnitely something intimidating about following in the footsteps of people you have looked up to your whole life, and I could not help but wonder if my experience would measure up to theirs. I wondered if I would ﬁnd the same sense of belonging, the same success and the same meaning that Ball State had given to my dad and my brother.

I questioned whether or not I would live up to what this place had already come to represent in my family.

What I can say is that my Ball State experience has been entirely mine.

Over the past four years, it has been shaped by long nights in the newsroom and many moments of uncertainty and growth that only happen when you are pushed outside your comfort zone. It has been ﬁlled with friends who feel like family, conversations that have changed how I think about life, professors who have challenged me to do better and opportunities that I did not even know existed when I ﬁrst arrived on campus.

It has not always been easy, though. There were moments when I felt overwhelmed, questioned my path and had to ﬁgure out a lot of things on my own because I have always had incrediby high standards for myself.

When I got to college, I wanted nothing more than to make my family proud, but I had a lot of self-doubt, questioning if the path I took was the right one for me. But in those moments, I realized something really important: being a part of a legacy means

building my own version of what Ball State means and knowing that my family will be proud of me no matter what.

For me, that has been through journalism. Through storytelling and covering moments that impact students and the Delaware County community, I have been a part of something bigger than myself. It is where I found more of my voice, and not just as a writer but also as a person. It is where I learned how to lead and how to take responsibility for the work I have put out into the world.

But even as I have created my own path, I still feel connected to what my family has left behind for me.

There is something really powerful about walking across campus and knowing that the same place shaped my dad years ago and my brother more recently. That the same halls, the same college traditions and the same sense of possibility existed for them, too.

As I graduate with my bachelor’s this year, I have found myself thinking a lot more about that connection. About what it means to graduate from a place that has been a part of my life for so long, even before I ofﬁcially became a student here.

For many people, graduation marks the end of their college story. It is a closing chapter and a moment of ﬁnality before moving on to something new.

For me, it does not feel like an ending, and it never has. It feels like a continuation.

Ball State has never just been four years of my life. It has been part of my family’s story ever since I can remember. It existed before I got here, and it will exist after I leave. And I know I will always be connected to it.

When I graduate, I will be leaving with a deeper appreciation for what it means to be part of something that extends beyond just me. And while my time as an undergraduate student comes to an end, the connection I have with my family because of Ball State does not.

Being a Ball State student, at least for me, was always about carrying on my family’s legacy while also carving my own path in the process, and I could not be more grateful for the life I have lived because of it.
