Reconnect with nature in the four-season wonderland of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Explore this vast woodland with its shimmering waterfalls, long-range views, and lush green forests. With three entrances to the Park near Bryson City, there is easy access to backpacking, hiking, camping, fishing, tubing and other outdoor adventures. The highest peak in the Park — Kuwohi (formerly Clingmans Dome) — offers spectacular 360° views of the Smokies and beyond.



Located at the Cherokee, NC, visitor center entrance to the Park, features include a pioneer village, riverside trail, and historic artifacts. It’s common to see the elk in the fields during the dawn and dusk hours. The historic Mingus Mill is a half-mile north on 441.
A unique part of local history, the Road to Nowhere is a six-mile scenic drive into the Park that dead ends at a tunnel. This is a popular area for hiking and exploring, including the 33.5mile Lakeshore Trail. From Bryson City, take Everett Street/Fontana Road three miles north to Lakeview Drive.
Just five minutes north of downtown Bryson City, Deep Creek is a popular area for tubing, hiking, biking, fishing and waterfall viewing. There are numerous tube rental outfitters at the park entrance. The picnic area includes a section along the creek with tables and grills.

National Park requires a valid parking tag for any vehicle parked longer than 15 minutes. Daily and weekly tags can be purchased at automated kiosks located throughout the park and at park visitor centers. Annual tags, however, are available only at official park visitor centers. Be sure to display your tag clearly on your dashboard before hitting the trails so you can enjoy your Smoky Mountain adventure without interruption.

The Great Smoky Mountains Railroad historic train depot is in the heart of Bryson City and is a favorite attraction for all ages. Fontana Lake has been called the best-kept secret in the North Carolina Mountains. The 29-mile long, 11,700-acre lake has 240 miles of shoreline, with more than 90% of the land bordering the Great Smoky Mountain National Park or the US Forest Service. At 480 feet high, the Fontana Dam impounds Fontana Lake waters to produce hydroelectric power. This engineering marvel has historical significance to the residents of Swain County. In response to an urgent need for electric power during World War II; many residents gave up their private land to the Federal Government for the creation of Fontana Lake and the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The Appalachian Trail crosses Fontana Dam, where visitors can walk or drive across the dam or stop by the visitor center from May through October.

Only 20 minutes from Bryson City, the Oconaluftee River originates in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and flows through downtown Cherokee. Tube rental companies in Cherokee transport you to a put-in spot and pick you up at the end of your ride.
Flowing through the heart of Bryson City the Tuckasegee River offers an unforgettable journey through crystal-clear waters and breathtaking landscapes. Few sights are as peaceful as water flowing over ancient rock and bordered by lush green moss. Explore the many breathtaking waterfalls in the Bryson City area and experience a sense of serenity like no other.


This trio of waterfalls is accessed via an easy to moderate 2.5-mile hike within the Deep Creek section of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
At 160 feet tall, this waterfall is one of the tallest in the southern Appalachians. A climb of 161 steps and a short trail will get you to this stunning waterfall in Cherokee, NC.
This impressive double waterfall is a hidden gem. Located east of Cherokee on US-19, a short trail ends at a viewing platform. For a closer view, continue down a steep trail to the base of the waterfalls.
The Nantahala River Cascades is a beauty to behold and boasts a series of drops that begin 1,000 feet above the gorge floor. Most of the falls are easily seen from Wayah Road.
Waterfalls are found throughout the area. Rocks near the water are often slick and uneven, so watch your step, wear sturdy footwear, and stay cautious to enjoy these natural wonders safely.

The Tuckasegee River in downtown Bryson City is designated as a Delayed Harvest River and is stocked with trout from fall through spring for catch-and-release enthusiasts. Remote streams offer native trout, while the Nantahala, Oconaluftee, and Little Tennessee Rivers



also provide excellent trout fishing. Bass, crappie, walleye, and muskie can be found in the Tuckasegee and Little Tennessee Rivers. Be mindful fishing license are required.
Fontana Lake is the crown jewel of Swain County fishing. Its 400-foot depths have yielded record-size muskie and walleye, and it’s considered one of the best smallmouth bass lakes in the country. Downtown Bryson City is also home to the Fly Fishing Museum of the Southern Appalachians and the Appalachian Rivers Aquarium, where visitors can learn more about the history and ecology of fishing in the Smokies. Tsali’s 42 miles of fun, flowy single track borders Fontana Lake and has been a mecca for mountain biking for over two decades. 12 miles west of Bryson City off NC-28 N. Look for Calf Pen Gap another intermediate trail across the road.
A 10.5-mile system of smooth, machine cut trails with sections from beginner to advanced. Solid climbs are rewarded with curvy descents. Trailhead at Oconaluftee Indian Village in Cherokee.


A scenic paved trail along the river with gentle inclines, a smooth ride, and sweeping mountain views. Begins near the rafting launch site on Wayah Road.
Start with 9 switchbacks up the steep face of Nantahala Gorge, ending with a fairly steep downhill ride. Located on US-19/74 at the Nantahala Outdoor Center.
Only two miles outside of Bryson City, this is a great family trail because of the wide trails and waterfalls. 4.5-mile out and back along a mountain stream.
This 3-mile out and back follows the river into Cherokee. Start at the Oconaluftee Visitor Center at the entrance to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

Located in the historic courthouse, the Swain County Heritage Museum tells the story of Swain County and its people. Through photos, exhibits and a video, you will learn about the life of early settlers; and how the creation of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and Fontana Dam rewrote the landscape and changed lives. Located along the banks of the Tuckasegee River and features all live tanks highlighting the diverse aquatic life of the region. Exhibits showcase native fish species such as bluegill, rock bass, smallmouth bass, spotted bass, and yellow perch. Visitors can also explore terrariums and a dedicated hellbender exhibit that display a variety of Southern Appalachian amphibians and reptiles, including frogs, turtles, and several species of salamanders. Admission is donation-based, and
your support is greatly appreciated to help with the care of the animals and ongoing educational efforts.
Explore the Fly Fishing Museum of the Southern Appalachians. Through exhibits and videos, visitors will learn about the evolution of rods and reels, basic knots, fly-tying, types of gear, types of gamefish, regional fishing waters and the history of fly fishing in the region. Labeled Lakeview Drive on a map, this scenic ride will take you six miles into the Great Smoky Mountains National Park to a dead-end road and the infamous Road to Nowhere Tunnel. You can park here and walk through the tunnel which adjoins many hiking trails within the Park. Lakeview Drive is easily accessible by motorized vehicles. Parking Passes are required.

Traveling US-19 through the Nantahala Gorge is a stunning drive that follows the Nantahala River and offers numerous pull-offs, picnic spots and river access points. At the western end of the gorge, turn onto Wayah Road and follow the river up Nantahala Mountain to view spectacular cascades
