This form is a variant of the seating designed for Taliesin II in 1925 and the Herman T. Mossberg House in 1948. While this specific chair form was specified in the design documents for the Howard Anthony Residence (1949), these examples were executed in oak by a subsequent owner following Mr. Anthony’s death in 1954. Based on construction and wear, they are dated between 1955-1975. The chairs were acquired in 2003 from Scott Elliott, former owner of the Howard Anthony Residence and proprietor of Kelmscott Gallery, Chicago. The chairs were structurally refurbished in 2004, though the finish and upholstery remain original to the time of their midcentury construction.

A member of the influential Progressive Artists’ Group formed in Bombay in the late 1940s, Kristen Khanna stands among the early pioneers of modernism in India and one of the last surviving voices of that movement. While many of his contemporaries pursued pure abstraction, he turned instead toward the human figure - rendering everyday life with quiet sensitivity and psychological depth. His work reflects a deliberate shift away from abstraction toward figuration, grounded in a deep concern for the individual shaped by circumstance. As he noted in an interview, he sought to emphasize “the human beings caught up in their particular condition,” depicting the emotional and social realities of his subjects. Continuing to live and work in New Delhi, Khanna remains deeply committed to his exploration of the human condition. This work was acquired by Watson Sims, then Bureau Chief of the Associated Press in New Delhi, and has remained out of the public market ever since.

“In August 62, I started doing silkscreens. I wanted something stronger that gave more of an assembly line effect. With silkscreening you pick a photograph, blow it up, transfer it in glue onto silk, and then roll ink across it so the ink goes through the silk but not through the glue. That way you get the same image, slightly different each time. It was all so simple quick, and chancy. I was thrilled with it. When Marilyn Monroe happened to die that month, I got the idea to make screens of her beautiful face the first Marilyns.” - Andy Warhol Warhol lifted his iconic image from a publicity image taken while Marilyn was working on the 1953 box office hit Niagara
