Completed in the Savannah area, and executed by Smith, while he was in the service of the U.S. Navy during the Civil War. The top sketch, in the four drawing series, depicts two large ships, with shoreline views of a large plantation style house, with two smaller, perhaps slave quarter cabins, behind the large house; this sketch is signed in the upper right corner ”X.S. June 14th 1863”. The second sketch from the top was labeled by Smith as “Scull Creek S.C.”; this sketch shows two shoreline houses, as well as several fisherman, three in a boat about to be launched and two onshore. The third sketch is labeled, at the bottom of the drawing, “Tybee Entrance to Savannah River”; depicted is a lighthouse, labeled “Lighthouse”, a tall flag pole with a tinted flag and a large, round tower-like structure, labeled “Martello Tower”. During the War of 1812, the Tybee Island Lighthouse was used as a signal tower to warn Savannah of possible attack by the British. Though no such attack took place, “Martello Tower” was constructed on Tybee to provide protection in guarding the Savannah River. The final sketch, signed at the bottom right corner “X.S. June 14th 1863”, is labeled “Pulaski”. Fort Pulaski National Monument is located on Cockspur Island between Savannah and Tybee Island, Georgia; it was constructed in 1847.

Elijah Hinsdale Burritt (April 20, 1794 - January 3, 1838) was an American astronomer and mathematician active in Connecticut. Burritt is often called ‘the forgotten astronomer.’ Burritt was born to an impoverished family and was initially apprenticed as a blacksmith. After an injury on the job, Burritt turned to astronomy with a passion. He studied at Williams College, from which he graduated in 1816. After graduation he moved to Milledgeville, then capital of Georgia. He taught at local schools for several years but, being a northerner, began to feel uncomfortable as his ‘yankee attitudes’ alienated his peers. He returned to Connecticut in 1829 and turned his parents home into an observatory to pursue his love of astronomy. Burritt then organized a group of 30 settlers to relocate to the newly formed Republic of Texas. There, Burritt and many of his fellow settlers contracted Yellow Fever and died. His seminal work, Burritt’s Geography of the Heavens was published from Hartford, Connecticut, in approximately 1833. The work, while primarily educational in nature, was the seminal American geography of the period.

The arms are those of Butler Family. ”Butler a boo” is a historical battle cry or motto associated with the Butler family, an Anglo-Norman family that rose to prominence in Ireland. The phrase is an Anglicization of the Irish “Butler abu,” meaning “Butler forever” or “Butler to victory”. It reflects the family’s Irish heritage and their martial prowess.

Comme je trouve” is a French phrase meaning “as I find” or “I take things as I find them.” It’s used as a motto, particularly by the Butler family (of Kilkenny, Ireland). The Butler family also has a significant history in South Carolina. Pierce Butler, son of Sir Richard Butler, 5th Baronet of Cloughgrenan and Henrietta Percy, resigned his commission in the British Army in 1773 and settled with Mary Middleton in South Carolina. After fighting in the American Revolutionary War, he served as a state legislator and was a member of the Congress of the Confederation, where he signed the United States Constitution. He was also a member of the United States Senate.

Victor de Grailly was a French landscape painter trained under neoclassical master Jean-Victor Bertin. He exhibited at the Paris Salon for nearly fifty years, earning recognition and medals in 1840 and 1844. Though rooted in neoclassicism, his style evolved toward Romanticism, known for its vivid color contrasts and dramatic skies. De Grailly gained acclaim for his idealized American landscapessuch as views of the Hudson River Valley, Niagara Falls, and Mount Vernon-despite no documented travel to the U.S. Drawing inspiration from travel literature and engravings, he successfully exhibited his work in major American cities between 1845 and 1858. Today, his paintings are held in major U.S. institutions, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the White House, and several prominent regional museums, as well as collections in France.
