Provenance:Acquired by the current owner from the sale of the Estate of George Withers, Sommerset, England
Estimate: $50,000 - $70,000
We are excited to share the recent discovery of a previously unknown work by Jeremiah Theus. It was offered at a regional English house, Dore & Rees, lot 21, February 21, 2024. Sold in a lot of four English portraits from the estate of the dealer/collector, George Withers, link to bio - https://www.doreandrees.com/the-private-collection-of-george-withers) this is the portrait that was pictured online.
While the sitter has not been identified, there are stylistic similarities that point to a possible connection with a well documented portrait of William Richardson, by Theus. https://artgallery.yale.edu/collections/objects/45313
This portrait is held by the Yale University Art Gallery. Style would appear to place our portrait around the same time of execution. If the painting on offer is a wedding portrait then one might assume there would be a pendant portrait of the groom. Anne Magdalen Guignard married Capt. William Richardson in St. Philip’s Parish, Charleston on 13 October 1768. The portrait of William Richardson could be this wedding portrait executed in advance of his military service. Perhaps we are looking at a portrait of his young bride Anne. The couple lived and are buried at Bloomhill Plantation in Sumter County, South Carolina. An advertisement in the Charleston Courier (online) 31 July 1869 references that Bloomhill Plantation and its contents were purchased by two English Gentleman (see image in note). Perhaps this rare Charleston portrait found its way to England with one of them.
There is room for continued research, and perhaps the sitter’s name will remain an enigma.

Winfred Rembert
(American/Georgia, 1945-2021)
Winfred at School, signed lower right “Winfred Rembert”, inscribed verso “To George from Winfred Rembert”, “This is a Self Portrait of Me and Mrs. Pratrer 5th Grade Randolph Training School”, dye on carved and tooled leather, 15-1/4 x 9-1/2 in.; modern black frame, 17-1/4 x 11-1/2 x 1 in.,painting is in very good condition; frame with light wear
Provenance:Purchased from the artist
Estimate: $20,000 - $30,000
Born in rural Georgia, raised in a community tied to the cotton fields, Winfred Rembert survived a childhood of poverty in the segregated South of the 1940s. He would go on to be a nationally recognized artist, and his biography - “Chasing Me to My Grave: An Artist’s Memoir of the Jim Crow South” - was awarded the Pulitzer Prize in 2022. It was not a well paved path. In 1966, after a demonstration in Americus, Georgia, Rembert was arrested and put in jail without being charged. A year later, he escaped but was caught and hung up by a group of deputy sheriffs. They stuck him with a knife but did not kill and burn him as he had anticipated. He spent the next seven years in a chain gang. Remarkably, he met his future wife while building roads and bridges in rural Georgia as part of his prison sentence. While in prison, a man named TJ taught him how to carve wallets out of leather, a skill that he would use decades later in his embossed leather paintings. After his release, Rembert and Patsy married and they moved to New York, then Connecticut, where he worked a variety of jobs. Not until in his 50s after a second round in prison, did he begin to draw and paint the scenes of his youth, carving the stories into tactile leather canvases.
In 2000, Rembert had a well publicized show at the Yale University Art Gallery. In 2002, he was introduced to Peter Tillou after speaking about his artwork at a school in Waterbury, Connecticut. A short time later they agreed to a working relationship that included numerous exhibitions and his 2010 “coming out” show at Adelson Galleries in New York. Their relationship continued until Rembert’s death in 2021.

The maker, Winfred Rembert was a supporter of Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama, for whom he purportedly made this pocketbook. Eventually the purse came to the consignor, a close personal friend of Rembert’s.
