WELCOME TO THE VISTAVIS Good evening and a warm welcome to everyone who has made the trip up from Pagham. I remember us winning there in the FA Cup a couple of years or so ago but this is obviously our first league meeting with the Lions for s while, and I do recall some pretty good games against them in the distant past. They have also done superbly to get to the second qualifying round of the FA Cup and we wish them well on Saturday. Our own form is picking up. I thought we did enough to beat Peacehaven last Tuesday only to succumb in the penalty shoot-out but we were rampant at Lydd on Saturday. We've had some hefty away wins in our history but 9-0? It's probably happened before but not for many years I'd guess. We go to the leaders Eastbourne United on Saturday for what will be another tough test. Come on the Wasps!

FROM THE
Dugout Welcome back to the Vistavis Community Stadium for this evening’s league fixture against Pagham We wish the travelling contingent a safe trip home. It’s been a while since my last programme notes but I feel we are starting to look more like the side I expect us to be. A convincing 3-1 win over Forest Row off the back of an entertaining 4-4 draw with Hassocks - it’s safe to say we’ve been finding the net Despite the 4-0 defeat at Dulwich Hamlet in the FA Cup I’m still very proud of the boys. A game where all five subs were needed because of injury inside 52 minutes and four of which came in the first half limited our ability to effect the game. We had a great cup run and beating top of the table Bognor Regis Town of the league above was a highlight. It was their only defeat since February and shows what we have as a squad. A 1-1 draw with league above Peacehaven was a result I felt harshly done by. The football we played was outstanding by the boys and we deserved a lot more than we got eventually losing on penalties. It’s clicking and this was demonstrated by a 9-0 win in the FA Vase on Saturday away at Lydd Town in which Dan Perry and Charlie Harris hat-tricks were the highlights but seeing Omar on the scoresheet was pleasing as well. We’re starting to look like the side I was expecting to see. Tonight’s opponents Pagham have progressed yet again in the FA Cup and are side residing third in the league so this will be a challenge. That said, I expect this football club to kick on and start making a distinctive move up the table after our recent run of form. Tonight sees Alex Malins, Nick D’Arenzio, Joe Stone and Kieron Pamment back in the squad. Latest signing Harry Harrington has been exceptional since his move from Southampton and at just 17 one to watch. I’m happy overall where we are right now and we still have Reegan Jeffery, Shay Leahy, Luke Leppard, Josh Nandrah, Ollie Starkey and Mason Saunders to come back into the squad. Competition is strong and a special mention to Fin Wigmore who has stepped from the U18s to start against both Peacehaven and Lydd Town to start and put in impressive displays. Tonight we need to kick on against third in the league before we head to league leaders Eastbourne United this weekend. I feel like the Wasps are starting to fly high. So get behind us tonight. Be loud and be proud and enjoy the game. Up the Wasps

A Brief History of Pagham Football Club
Pagham Football Club, affectionately known as The Lions, has been a proud part of the West Sussex footballing landscape since its formation in 1903. Based on Nyetimber Lane, just a short distance from the coast, the club has long been a hub for local football and a place where generations of players and supporters have shared their passion for the game. After early years competing in local leagues, Pagham joined the Sussex County League in 1966 – the start of an era that would see the club establish itself as one of the competition’s most respected names. The Lions enjoyed particular success during the 1970s and 1980s, with a string of strong league finishes and memorable runs in county cup competitions. The pinnacle of Pagham’s achievements came in the early 1980s, when the club were crowned Sussex County League champions three years in succession (1980–81, 1981–82, and 1982–83) – a remarkable feat that firmly put the Lions on the footballing map. Those sides combined local talent with real quality, setting standards that are still spoken about fondly around Nyetimber Lane today. In more recent decades, the club has remained a competitive force in the county
scene, balancing league campaigns with involvement in the FA Vase and other national competitions. Nyetimber Lane continues to be a welcoming ground for visitors, with a reputation for friendliness and good football. Pagham FC’s identity is built on its community roots – a club where volunteers, players, and supporters come together to create something lasting. With a proud past and an eye to the future, The Lions continue to roar on the Sussex coast. EAST GRINSTEAD TOWN
HISTORY PROGRAMMES FROM THE PAST BY LESTER MEDCALF I’m going to share with you a couple of programmes in my collection for games played in the past half-way through September. We’ll start with East Grinstead v Seaford on Saturday 16 September 2006 - 20 years ago in division two of the Sussex County League. Programme editor Bruce Talbot gets things moving by talking about the games that we had played against Seaford in the 2005/06 season - a 1-1 draw at East Court before we suffered a 5-0 defeat in Seaford in the last game of that previous season. We had been very short of players for that game and team manager Bobby Smith found himself playing for much of the second half. Some 5 months later and he could still feel the pain! Coming to the 2006/07 season Bruce talks briefly about our two recent defeats which saw us losing in both the FA Vase to Tunbridge Wells and the FA Cup to Hamble FC inside 4 days. Bobby Smith suggests that we “gave the ball away too often.” The FA Vase defeat was covered in some detail by a match report that appeared in the Tunbridge Wells website. Tunbridge Wells were very non-experienced and we had much of the play. And after 20 minutes our Jez Tobin scored - and in the first minute of the second half Simon Cassidy put us 2-0 up. But it wasn’t over yet as Tunbridge Wells scored halfway through the second half, and with just some five minutes to go they scored again. And just when it looked as if extra time would be needed Tunbridge Wells went and scored again to bring them a 3-2 win. Chairman Richard Tramontin gives us more information about the FA Cup loss. We had been happy enough to draw the first match away to Hamble 1-1 with Simon Cassidy scoring. The replay at East Court saw us failing to take the many chances that we had. Hamble also had few chances until there were 12 minutes left and Hamble used the time to score three times. Simon Cassidy did manage to score for us at the very end, but it wasn’t enough. What about the Seaford match? The league table in our programme has Seaford and ourselves with the same results - two wins, two draws and two defeats - though Seaford had scored a goal more than us. The game saw Seaford opening the scoring after some 20 minutes, with Tyrone Roberts equalising for us a couple of minutes later, only for Seaford to get back in front another few minutes later. No more goals were scored and so we lost 2-1.
OAK FELLED Our next programme is for Mile Oak v East Grinstead on Saturday 15 September 2007 - still in division two of the Sussex County League. There are a lot of interesting pieces to read - not all them will be getting a mention. The Mile Oak programme editor welcomes us and then provides two pages of rather detailed analysis. He starts by looking at Mile Oak results so far though he does have to tell us that Mile Oak have had “four Cup matches and not a solitary win.” He then has a pretty long look at ourselves, starting by looking at our performance in the season so far. We had won all three of our league matches but our Cup games performances were similar to that of Mile Oak. We then have a look at recent games between the two of us, noting "there are normally bags of goals." In the 2006/07 season we had won 3-2 away to Mile Oak, but only drawn 2-2 at East Court. In the previous 2005/06 season we had played three matches with one being a league cup quarter-final match which Mile Oak had won 4-0 (they went on to win the final). Earlier in that season we had played away to Mile Oak in the first league match and we had won 5-2. Our home league match had been a 1-1 draw. The programme also has a regular “Blast from the past” feature - and this week it recalled Mile Oak’s visit to East Court in November 1998. We had scored in the first few minutes and then missed a couple of chances in the next few minutes - “easiest chances they’ll ever get.” Gradually Mile Oak got themselves back into the game and eventually they won 3-1. So what happened in the September 2007 Mile Oak game? I know what the score was, but I don’t know anything about the game. Goals from Dan Sullivan, Simon Funnell and Tobi Hutchinson gave us a 3-2 win.
