Greetings! Director’ s MESSAGE
I’m proud to share that Broward County Library has just been named Library of the Year by the Florida Library Association.
We also earned three additional FLA honors:
• The African American Research Library and Cultural Center’s Saturday School earned FLA’s Intellectual Freedom award.
• Our Marketing Team won the FLA Communications Award for their Freegal Wizard Campaign.
• The Westside Gazette was recognized by FLA as Media Partner of the year.
These awards reflect our commitment to innovation, equity, creativity, and exceptional service to our community. Thank you to our dedicated staff and robust community partners who contributed to these accomplishments. We love to hear folks say that we are the “best bargain in Broward!”
Library users are savvy customers who know that the price for anything here is always right – it’s free! Everything we offer is at no charge to the customer. Library services are primarily paid for by property taxes with funds allocated to us by the Broward County Board of County Commissioners.
Children’s Bookfest - Free Family Festival to Kickoff Summer 2026
College Prep with Brainfuse
Step Back in Time: An Afternoon with Thomas Jefferson
With summer vacation around the corner, many parents are shopping for summer activities and recoiling from sticker shock. Happily, the library’s Summer Learning Program – for adults and children – is the perfect, free alternative.
We start the 2026 Summer Learning Program with a signature super event: The 21st Annual Children’s BookFest on Saturday, May 30th at West Regional Library. This year’s theme is “Unearth a Story,” and will we do just that with imaginative, creative library programs centered around art, science, and culture that halt the dreaded ‘summer slide.’
This downward slide in student skills occurs when there is mental inactivity during summer break. Dartmouth College Health Children’s reports that kids’ reading skills can decline by 20% and math skills by 27% over the school recess. That is where the library comes in for everybody.
From June 1st to August 9th, the library’s Summer Learning Program is loaded with activities that enrich, entertain, and reinforce learning for all of us. The Early Literacy Program prepares children for success by developing early language skills; the Children’s Program helps young children build reading and language skills; the Teen Program motivates teens to create and to
explore literature; the Adult Program encourages adults to experience the joy of reading.
On that note, I’d like to invite you to join me at my Director’s Book Club, where we are reading Crying in H Mart, a memoir about family, food, grief, love, and growing up Korean American, by indie rock star Michelle Zauner.
Finally, remember that year-round, 24/7, we offer the online resource Brainfuse to keep your mind ignited and expanding. Whether you’re looking for free coaching for a high school equivalency exam or the U.S. citizenship test, acquiring computer skills, nailing a job search, writing the perfect resume, saving hundreds of dollars for personal tutoring on the subject and level of your choice, or learning chess as a life skill, Brainfuse is at your service. Head back to school, snag your next job, or impress your friends as a star!
Wishing you a May filled with brainy bargains found only at your library!
Sincerely,
Allison Grubbs
