MESSAGE
Anyone who is a reader like I am knows we like to divide the year into books, even more than months. We have a “to be read” list as long as an arm, with titles we can’t wait to delve into. Those who live with us complain about books piling up all around – unless they too are bibliophiles, building up their own stash. But as any bookworm will attest, there is nothing quite like the anticipation of losing oneself in the next great book. We relish that moment when our own reality just dissolves…and there is nothing but the world of the characters and their words. Great news! I have a bunch of books picked out for the year that you will want to latch onto. Each is exciting and engrossing, with strong, powerful women driving their own story by the force of their convictions and personalities. All are true stories, with the exception of Circe, who steps forward from the mythological realm. I love fiction, but there is nothing quite as inspiring to me as reading about a real person who rises up out of ordinary circumstances to hold her own against the world and emerge triumphant. When I have a book like that waiting for me, I cannot wait to get home to it! Let me give you an insider’s preview of the six special selections which I want to personally explore with you in the year ahead, beginning with Grandma Gatewood’s Walk: The Inspiring Story of the Woman Who Saved the Appalachian Trail by Ben Montgomery, which my Director’s Book Club will be talking about in February and March. You will be as mesmerized as I was reading about Emma Gatewood’s wild odyssey that included setting off with nothing but two hundred dollars and the clothes on her back, breaking records, and preserving the Trail for future generations. In April and May, we enter the world of Qian Julie Wang, an impoverished, undocumented child in New York City’s Chinatown. She takes us into her world in Beautiful Country: A Memoir, sharing a memory that touches my heart when she recounts taking refuge in the public library to learn English and meet her first American “friends,” the Berenstain Bears. In June and July we encounter a woman of uncommon strength and courage in Walk with Me: A Biography of Fannie Lou Hamer by Kate Larson, which reveals intimate details in the life of the civil rights icon. For August and September, we immerse ourselves in the myth and magic of Circe by Madeline Miller, coursing through her otherworldly trajectory to unrivaled empowerment. As autumn brings us to the October and November holidays, we’ll delve into Graceland, At Last: Notes on Hope and Heartache From the American South by Margaret Renkl. This New York Times columnist is regarded as the voice of the modern South by many, and shares the complex, tangled, majestic beauty of the people that make it unique and amazing. (Full disclosure: I’m a Georgia girl.) Finally, December finds many of us taking stock, discovering our gifts and reinventing ourselves. Reading Finding Freedom: A Cook’s Story; Remaking a Life from Scratchby Erin Frenchbrings all of that home, as we follow French’s path to generosity, freedom, renewal and delicious, dazzling success. What a year to look forward to! In our readings we are taking a whirlwind tour geographically, from the Appalachian Mountains to Chinatown, to the Mississippi Delta…darting back in time to voyage from ancient Greece to Graceland, ending in Maine. Reading acquaints us with our world and the extraordinary people who occupy it with us. I hope you share my sense of adventure and my delight in stellar stories – which you can either read, or for some, listen to – since the library has or can obtain copies in more than one format. This brings me to an important reminder: the library is for everyone. All ages, backgrounds, nationalities and abilities. If you are blind or have low vision, if you are hearing impaired, if you are physically unable to visit us in person, we are still your library and are dedicated to serving you.

As Broward County Libraries collectively takes the time to observe the cultural significance of February as Black History Month, it is my pleasure to bring you greetings from the African American Research Library and Cultural Center (AARLCC)! Energized by AARLCC’s mission to collect, preserve, and provide access to resources focusing on the history and culture of people of African, African American, and Caribbean descent, we celebrate the contributions of Black people and Black history and culture every day. However, this year’s Black History Month takes on an extra special distinction because AARLCC is celebrating a milestone anniversary marking our existence within the annals of Black history when we were established in 2002. To commemorate 20 years of continuity in our mission-driven purpose, we are excited to host throughout 2022 exciting programs known as The Vicennial of Black Excellence!
We will commence our anniversary celebration on February 11, at 6:30pm with a Re-dedication Celebration and exhibition opening of Collectors’ Duet: The Lifelong Librarianship of Vivian D. Hewitt and Dorothy Porter Wesley. This event will reconnect attendees to our mission and reintroduce two of our archival collections as a new exhibit. Please be my guest for a night of entertainment and inspiration celebrating Broward Black history and Black excellence. Over the past 20 years, AARLCC has evolved into a leading South Florida institution where our expertise, programs, services, and resources are relied upon by the community and sought out as a trusted source for our diverse array of content related to Black history and culture.
