Greetings! Director’ s MESSAGE

Can it really be February? This year is zooming by, and we have so many great programs ready to roll.

As you know, the library is a joyful place, and we love to celebrate things we value. This month is no different as we gear up for Valentine’s Day and Black History Month. Meaningful learning combined with singing, dancing, crafting, acting, and eating is how we like to mark an occasion with you!

Did you know that this year marks the 100th anniversary of Black History Month? We are celebrating systemwide. We will be crafting for teens and adults with a Relief Sculpture Workshop Inspired by Charles McGee  (Main Library); and Freedom Quilts (Lauderhill Towne Centre).

We will also be enjoying music like a Jazz and Traditional concert with Emily (Carver Ranches); the Broward County Chamber Orchestra (West Regional Library); and Sounds of Freedom: A Musical Journey of Liberation (AARLCC).

We have Black History storytimes at many branches and an essay contest (Lauderdale Lakes), along with Black History Saturday School CommuniVersity, our ongoing, awardwinning, monthly Black History classes for children and adults (AARLCC).

My Director’s Book Club selection, in honor of Black History Month, is There’s Always This Year: On Basketball and Ascension by Hanif Abdurraqib. This author and cultural observer fuses musings and memoir to share his unique, intimate perspective on life, sports, and everything in between.

In addition to learning about ourselves through history and literature, we love to express ourselves through the arts, and what happier occasion than Valentine’s Day, when we tell special people in our lives that we love them? Make a card (Main Library, Weston, Tyrone Bryant); make a bouquet at the Creation Station (North Regional/ Broward College);

Think your child has the makings of a star performer? Maybe they just love to sing, dance, or act and want to go to the next level of performing. We are nurturing our young talent in a free, eight-week Gotta Dance! workshop (Northwest Regional). Catch a little stardust!

Time to get serious when it comes to income tax, so get an early jump on free tax preparation at a local branch. No one likes paying taxes, but that’s what our government runs on. Let the League of Women Voters show you how to make local government and your tax dollars work for you with Government 101 (North Regional/BC).

We’re also thrilled to welcome you back to Hollywood Branch Library. As you may know, a vehicle accident in 2025 caused wide-ranging damage to the building, including smoke and flooding inside. After months of hard work, the library reopened to the public on January 6, 2026.

Wishing you all that makes February fabulous – hearts, flowers, chocolates and an armful of good reads!
